SUNSHINE STATE Trantalis Sworn In as Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner FORT LAUDERDALE — Dean Trantalis was sworn in as Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner for District 2 on Tuesday, March 19, at a ceremony in the Fort Lauderdale City Hall City Commission chambers. With all voting precincts reporting, Trantalis, a long-time LGBT rights activist and attorney, won a runoff election against his opponent, Charlotte Rodstrom, by a count of 1,543 to 1,525. Trantalis formerly held the District 2 seat, serving a single term from 2003 to 2006, and was succeeded by Rodstrom, who served two additional terms, the last one after being re-elected in January 2012.

Hollywood Assistant Police Chief Cleared of Homophobic Slur Allegations HOLLYWOOD — An Internal Affairs investigation of his alleged use of a homophobic slur has found no wrongdoing on the part of Assistant Police Chief Jimmy Jones, who was accused of making the insensitive remarks during a retirement party last year. The investigation was ordered by former Police Chief Chad Wagner, after the Hollywood City Manager’s office received an anonymous letter on August 7, accusing Jones of telling the gathered crowd, “Chad [Wagner] wanted to be here tonight, but he heard there were too many fags coming.” In an email to City Manager Cathy Swanson-Rivenbark, Jones called the charges “baseless” and said that he believed they had been made by a former Hollywood police officer whom he had transferred out of the department’s Homicide Unit. Eight witnesses from the party— including five detectives and a union official—gave sworn statements as
part of the IA investigation; none reported hearing Jones make the opprobrious comments.
Dolphin Democrat Tim Lonergan Elected to Oakland Park City Commission OAKLAND PARK — Political newcomer Tim Lonergan was elected on Tuesday, March 12, to the Oakland Park City Commission District 5 seat, defeating former Mayor Layne Dallet Walls by a vote of 1,027 to 754. Lonergan, a member of the Dolphin Democrats, will succeed Suzanne Boisvenue to the non-partisan commission seat. Boisvenue was prevented from running because of term limits.
Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll Resigns TALLAHASSEE — On Tuesday, March 12, it was announced that Florida Gov. Rick Scott had accepted the resignation of Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll, just days after she was questioned by state agents concerning her connections to a controversial chain of strip-mall casinos which operate as “internet cafés.” Nelson Cuba, the President of the Jacksonville Florida Order of Police, along with officials with Allied Veterans of the World, the non-profit that operates the casinos in Florida, were arrested on racketeering charges following an investigation by the U.S. Secret Service and the Internal Revenue Service. “Lt. Gov. Carroll resigned in an effort to keep her former affiliation with the company from distracting from the administration’s important work on behalf of Florida Families,” said the governor’s chief of staff, Adam Hollingsworth. Federal investigators have charged Allied Veterans of the World with money laundering, using money from a nonprofit for personal gain, and misrepresenting the amount of money that was donated to charities. Prosecutors allege that the non-profit
donated just two percent of the $290 million it received in proceeds to charities. A consulting firm owned by the lieutenant governor, 3N & JC, performed work for Allied Veterans, and Carroll herself was featured in a 2010 commercial for the nonprofit. In 2010, Scott tapped Carroll, a 20-year Navy veteran, to serve as his running mate. As we reported last year (Agenda, July 18, 2012, “Is She or Isn’t She? Ex-Staffer Claims She Found Florida Lt Gov in ‘Compromising Position’ with Female Aide”), a former aide to Carroll, Carletha Cole, was arrested after giving to a reporter the recording of a secret conversation between her and Carroll’s chief of staff. As part of the legal defense in her criminal trial, Cole said that she caught Carroll in “a compromising position” with another aide, shortly before she was fired in 2011. Cole claimed that she interrupted Carroll and a female staff member in an intimate embrace. “When she entered the office,” court documents allege, “[Cole] found the Lieutenant Governor and her Travel Aide, Beatriz Ramos, in what can only be described as a compromising position.” The examiner who took Cole’s polygraph tested wrote that, “Her charts, in my opinion, are indicative of a nondeceptive examinee (truthful),” adding, “Ms. Cole passed her polygraph.” Carroll denied the allegations of a gay affair, telling a Tampa television station, “Black women that look like me don't engage in relationships like that.” She also emailed a video to supporters, denying the lesbian rumor.

Boy Scouts Mail Questionnaire about Gay Ban IRVING, TX — Last week, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) mailed a survey to the homes of more than one million scouts and their families, asking for their opinions on a range of topics concerning the organization’s prohibition on openly-gay members or unit leaders. The questionnaire came as part of Scouting’s announcement in January that it was considering lifting its ban on homosexuals by allowing local organizations to determine for themselves their individual membership policies. BSA subsequently announced that it would take up the issue on a national level at its annual meeting in May. The survey questions cover a variety of subjects that relate to the ban, as well as soliciting members thoughts on the future of Scouting should the prohibition be lifted. “If [BSA] makes a decision on this policy that disagrees with your own view, will you continue to participate in the Boy Scouts, or will you leave
the organization?” one asks. Another offers the example of “A troop [that] is chartered by an organization that does not believe homosexuality is wrong and allows gays to be ministers. The youth minister traditionally serves as the Scoutmaster. The congregation hires a youth minister who is gay. Is it acceptable or unacceptable for this youth minister to serve as the Scoutmaster?” Other questions concern such issues as whether gay and straight scouts should share accommodations on camping trips, and whether the language in Scouting’s oath, which lauds being “morally straight,” is making a value judgment about sexual identity (or is simply an affirmation of ethical conduct). The respondents are asked to rate their views on a scale ranging from “totally acceptable” to “totally unacceptable.” Scouting officials say the organization’s local leaders will receive information on the survey’s findings before the annual meeting in May.
Hillary Clinton Endorses Marriage Equality NEW YORK, NY — In a video statement produced by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and released on Monday, March 18, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton endorsed same-sex marriage. “I support marriage for lesbian and gay couples,” Clinton said in the video, adding, “I support it personally and as a matter of policy and law embedded in a broader effort to advance equality and opportunity for LGBT Americans and for all Americans.” “Like so many others, my personal views have been shaped over time by people I have known and loved,” Clinton, a possible contender for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, noted. LGBT Americans “are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones,” Clinton said. "And they are full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship; that includes marriage.”H

WASHINGTON, DC — A report released last week says that America’s undocumented population includes at least 267,000 immigrants who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). The report from the Center for American Progress, “Living in Dual Shadows,” is based on research at UCLA’s Williams Institute, and says that undocumented LGBT immigrants are generally male, young, and likely to be Asian. “Because LGBT undocumented people find themselves at the intersection of two already marginalized groups—the LGBT population and the undocumented population— they are among society’s most vulnerable individuals,” the report reads. “Passing an immigration reform bill with a direct road map to earned citizenship would lift these immigrants out of the shadows, treat them with the dignity that they deserve, and enable them to become full and equal participants in our society, economy, and democracy.” The report includes recommendations for dealing specifically with LGBT immigration concerns, including passage of an immigration reform bill that would offer LBGT immigrants a path to legalized status; modifying standards used for detention and asylum issuance to take into account specific problems faced by LBGT persons, including proper access to medications; and ensuring that LBGT immigrants benefit from policies designed to keep families together.
cials said she can no longer use the female restroom, and ordered her to use the boys’ facilities or the school nurse’s bathroom. With the help of the Transgender Legal and Defense Education Fund (TLDEF), Jeremy and Katherine Mathis filed the complaint against Eagle Elementary School in Fountain, Colo. The parents say that their 6-year-old has been treated as female by both classmates and teachers, who use female pronouns to refer to her. The family says that the district’s actions are setting their child up for future bullying and difficulties in life. In a letter last December to the TLDEF, the district’s attorneys said, “The district’s decision took into account not only Coy but other students in the building, their parents, and the future impact a boy with male genitals using a girls’ bathroom would have as Coy grew older.”

Experts say that some of the strongest opposition to including LGBT immigrants in immigration reform comes from within the Hispanic community. A coalition of Hispanic Roman Catholic and Protestant evangelical groups are urging President Obama to omit same-sex marriage issues in discussions about immigration reform, which starkly illustrates the dichotomy within a community that supports legalization for undocumented immigrants. That opposition is in contrast to the demographics that suggest support for LGBT rights among the nation’s Hispanics and Latinos. A poll conducted by Latino Decisions and released on March 8 found that 64 percent of Latinos support including gay couples in immigration reform policies.

n the 1972 musical “Company,” Stephen Sondheim wrote “Isn’t Warm? Isn’t Rosy? Side by side/ Ports in a storm, comfy and cozy/ Side by side.” To this, I add: Not! Relationships: Whether we like it or “not,” we are the product of them, born into them, and our lives defined are them. The word almost sounds soothing to the ears. Even the individual words that combine to form the new word—“relation” and “ships”—seem happy and smooth-sailing. But, just wait until you are onboard. Our primary relationships (with our parents) help to form our personality and our attitude towards our other life connections. Many mental health professionals, me included, believe that a turbulent and rough relationship with our parents sets the tone for the other relationships developed along our personal journey. If you are involved in a good relationship,
everything is hunky-dory. There is little conflict and the boat ride progresses easily to its destination of bliss and satisfaction. But what about the relationships that are rough and tempestuous? Relationships can provide many benefits. They can offer companionship, security, romance, and support. They can also be riddled with mixed messages, communication breakdowns, disappointments, misunderstandings, and conflict. Some partners have a difficult time expressing their needs to each other. Arguments or disagreement may follow, but they may have positive or negative consequences. I believe that a “fair fight” or “heated discussion” can produce a positive outcome if both parties use this opportunity to resolve that issue. A negative outcome might include one partner sulking or tuning out the other partner’s concerns. Words of disrespect may be expressed, and the parties stop listening
to each other. My experience has been that, no matter what the argument is about, it is typically doesn’t represent the real issue. Here are some suggestions to find successful solutions to relationship conflict: 1. Try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Tell yourself, “I care about this person. This issue is really bothering them. How can I make it better?” 2. Discover the real reason why your friend/partner/family member is upset, in a nurturing and non-accusing manner. 3. Remember that this disagreement is not the end of the relationship, but possibly a new beginning or means to real understanding. 4. Take responsibility in the creation of conflict, and try to reach some kind of settlement or compromise. 5. If appropriate, introduce some humor into the conversation to lighten
the mood. 6. If the conflict is too extreme, try to agree to disagree. 7. Talk respectfully to each other without foul language or demeaning undertones. 8. Accept that there is a problem and try to make a plan to solve it. 9. Prepare to forgive the other person. It’s important to realize that you may be willing to sever a relationship over an issue that can be mutually settled with ease and calm. Is it worth giving up a great friend, supportive family member, or a loving partner because you weren’t willing to hear their side of things?

PARTY LINES: THE GOP V. THE REPUBLICANS
POLITICS
BY JOE HARRIS
I
remotely self-serving, about the self“outing” this week of U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) as the father of a gay son—especially since it occurred weeks after other national Republicans gave him cover by their calls for the Supreme Court to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8—how does that “courage” translate into wider policy shifts by the GOP leadership? First off, most of the Big Money donors in the GOP are either active or casual supporters of LGBT rights. Of the rest, a majority are libertarians and don’t care about the issue one way or the other, and just a tiny fraction (like the Koch Brothers, or the DeVos family of Amway) is devoted to conservative Christian causes. But even after Portman’s family-motivated conversion to the ranks of the equality-loving, the nation’s highest-
ranking Republican, U.S. House Speaker John Boehner, a fellow Ohioan, still held to the party line, telling ABC News on Sunday, “I believe that marriage is the union of one man and one woman,” and adding for good measure, “I can’t imagine that position would ever change.” So who “speaks” for the Grand Old Party, the “Speaker,” or party mandarins like Jeb Bush, who told C-PAC that the Republicans’ homophobic rhetoric is scaring the ‘normals’? I mention the former Florida governor (the “Is He, Or Isn’t He?”—as in running for President—Boy of 2013) to draw attention to a fundamental political truth of this off-election year: Boehner’s playing-to-the-intolerant-wing of the GOP is still the surer way to the 2016 nod than the pragmatism of a Jeb or the tolerance and fair-mindedness of a Jon Huntsman, Jr. (who demonstrated real courage and leadership with his editorial
last month in The American Conservative in support of marriage equality). But Republican presidential primaries are decided by social and religious conservatives, not moderates, centrists, or even libertarians. The grassroots organizations and activists (who were first mobilized a decade ago by Karl Rove) who make the phone calls and send in donations consist of fundamentalist and evangelical Christians (who have little use for the Mormon Huntsman, or even his distant cousin, Mitt Romney). Those activists take their cues, not from Huntsman, but from the likes of Limbaugh (who, unlike the former Utah governor, never voted once for Ronald Reagan; how’s that feel Dittotards?). And all GOP presidential primary math requires some measure of these values voters, who still aren’t “queer” for gay marriage.H

He was so violently opposed in his agenda of land and welfare reforms by his Co-Consul, Marcus Bibulus, one of the more conservative members of Rome’s ruling Senate, that Caesar was required to do most of the work himself during the one-year term, which came to be known jokingly as “the Consulship of Julius and Caesar” (instead of “and Bibulus”). In a way, this is how the Republicans are starting to look following the recent breach within the ranks over LGBT rights, and specifically marriage equality, like a two-headed snake working at cross purposes against itself. COVER STORY
STUDY: SOME PATIENTS CAN CONTROL HIV AFTER ENDING TREATMENT By CLIFF DUNN
P
ARIS, FRANCE — French researchers last week made a startling claim that could forever alter the way HIV/ AIDS is studied and treated. They released a report that suggests that rapid treatment of patients after exposure to HIV infection may “functionally cure” about a 1-in-10 of those who are diagnosed early. The study authors, lead by Professor Asier Sáez-Cirión of the Institut Pasteur in Paris, identified 14 adults who have controlled their HIV infection after they ceased taking the antiviral drugs prescribed for their treatment. The report suggests that other patients may also be able to achieve this so-called functional cure. The French findings, which were published this week in the journal PLOS Pathogens, come just two weeks after study authors in the U.S. published data concerning a baby with an HIV-positive mother that was born in Mississippi and had apparently been cured of the HIV virus through an aggressive regime of anti-viral drugs that were administered within an hour of birth. In the case of the French patients, the researchers say that treatment began within months of their infection, which is still faster than in most adult cases. The French study authors suggest that as many as 15 percent of diagnosed patients who begin early treatment—and who continue it for at least a year—may be able to control the virus without further treatment, sparing them of a lifetime of administering drugs on a daily basis. Dr. Sáez-Cirión, the study’s lead author, said that the French patients are experiencing “remission” rather than a cure, because the virus is still present at low levels in their bodies. But using the data to determine why some people are able to “control” the HIV virus may lead to an actual, func-

“...exposure to HIV infection may “functionally cure” about a 1-in-10 of those who are diagnosed early.” tional cure—one that would allow individuals to enjoy healthy lives without drug therapies, even if the infection is not completely eradicated. Experts say that the chief barrier to an actual cure for AIDS is that even when drugs sharply reduce the levels of the HIV infection in the blood, the virus can still stay hidden in the body’s so-called reservoirs. The French study noted that the viral reservoirs in post-treatment controllers were smaller than those for a typically-infected individual, and that these reservoirs had a smaller proportion of long-lived immune cells. A fraction of people infected with HIV—less than 1 percent—are known as elite controllers, whose bodies keep the virus in check without the use of antiviral drugs. Some of the French study
patients may be in this group, and never needed drugs in the first place, although that will never be known since their treatment began so soon after infection was detected. But the French study authors say that these “post-treatment controllers,” are different from elite controllers, in that the post-treatment controllers tended to have very high viral loads soon after infection, whereas elite controllers are more likely to keep their virus levels down, even at the start of treatment. One possible outcome of the French research is that people who are taking antiviral drugs may safely be able to stop that treatment. Other experts caution the report does not provide enough information to accurately predict which patients might be able to stop, and that
patients should be warned not stop treatment on their own. They point to previous clinical trials which show that, in general, interruption of treatment leads to negative consequences. The study also suggests that treatment for most people diagnosed with HIV should start earlier. But that isn’t always possible. Many infected persons live for months or years without knowing their HIV status, and some who are aware don’t or can’t start immediate treatment because of the cost of the medications or concerns about the associated side effects. In the French research, the patients began treatment soon after becoming infected; many of these patients had already exhibited symptoms that alerted their doctors to the presence of infection. They were each on therapy from between one year to seven and a half years, and have been off treatment for between four and 10 years. According to the study authors, most of the patients were involved in research to learn if they could take “drug holidays.” But others did stop the treatment on their own. Since their treatment ended, most of the patients have had viral blood levels below 50 copies per milliliter (CPM), a number that is considered undetectable. Some of them have reported measurements of up to a few hundred copies. Despite caution about the long-term implications of the research data, experts not connected with the study say that although the “post-treatment controllers” may not be cured, they possess some physiological advantages that research needs to understand further. They also note that new testing that measures viral loads in the body is accurate and sensitive enough that it might be possible to take people off treatment for short periods, and put them back on medications if their condition rapidly changes.H

Fashion? It’s What I Live For
“Bare” It
Organized by Diane von Furstenberg, the legendary President of the Council of Fashion designers of America, “IMPACT: 50 Years of the CFDA” includes living and breathing examples (well, sort of) of the fashion, garments, and accessories produced by the most influential fashion designers of the last 50 years. The CFDA exhibit celebrates over 600 designers who have belonged to the industry trade group for the past five decades, including Oscar De La Renta, Michael Kors, Coach, Vera Wang, Kenneth Cole, Diane Von Furstenberg, Calvin Klein, and many others of whom you just might have heard. Sponsored in part by Neiman Marcus. Through April 21st at the Boca Museum of Art (501 Plaza Real, Mizner Park, Boca Raton).
The acclaimed off-Broadway musical “Bare” tells the story of two gay teens in a Roman Catholic boarding school (do we really need to say more?). It’s a coming of age story for a new generation, with a rock-musical twist. The story centers on Jason and Peter and their struggles being in love in an environment that condemns their intimacy. It follows forbidden love in an arc that includes both efforts to come out to giving in to the pressure to fit in. At 7:30 p.m., in the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW 5 Ave., Fort Lauderdale).

Some Prefer Their Women Au Natural The American Folk Rock duo Indigo Girls have been releasing music independently (under their own IG Recordings label) since 2007. They Girls—who are themselves part of the LGBT tribe—have a huge gay fan base, too. Their singles “Closer to Fire,” “Galileo,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and even a track with P!nk, “Dear Mr. President,” have kept them on the radar (and the gaydar). See them in a rare, intimate setting. DESPITE DISNEY AND JAMES FRANCO, “OZ” LACKS WIZARDRY
CINEMA
By GREGG SHAPIRO
“Oz, The Great and Powerful” (Disney) opens
with great promise. The mood is set by a dazzling title credits sequence (in black and white, no less), that will make you want to strap on those uncomfortable 3D glasses. Kansas—poor Kansas!—is once again presented in all of its black and white (but mostly grey) glory. Storm clouds gather over a traveling circus where magician and ladies’ man Oz (James Franco, looking more out of place than he did when co-hosting the Oscars) is bent on practicing his most successful trick: making his tongue disappear into the mouth of his young female assistant. Oz is having a particularly gloomy day. Occasional girlfriend Annie (Michelle Williams) comes to tell him that she plans to marry a “feller” by the name of Gale (read: foreshadowing). Then, following an especially unsuccessful performance—where he’s unable to honor the request of a little girl (Joey King) in a wheelchair
to make her walk (more unsubtle foreshadowing at work)—Oz must make a hasty exit when the circus strongman discovers that he’s been messing with his girl. Good thing his assistant Frank (Zach Braff ) notices that there’s a hot air balloon nearby. Setting sail just as one of those dang Kansas twisters arrives, Oz is whisked off to the vividly colored Land of Oz (hey, that’s his name, too!), where his arrival has been anticipated. There, he is greeted by Theodora (Mila Kunis) who fills Oz in on the details (Wicked Witch, evil minions, citizens living in fear and despair—you know the drill). The good people of Oz are counting on his magic to restore peace to the kingdom. Only then can he take his rightful place on the throne, with Theodora by his side, and lay claim to all the riches. Naturally, his first act must be the destruction of the Wicked Witch and her dreaded wand. But which “witch” is it? Is it Annielookalike Glinda (Williams), who claims to be good? Is it Theordora’s
sister, the slinky Evanora (Rachel Weisz)? Or could it be the short-fused Theodora herself? While Oz tries to figure that out, he amasses a Dorothy-style team, including winged monkey Finley (Braff ), whom he rescues from what turns out to be a ‘cowardly’ lion, and China Girl (King), a living porcelain doll that Oz repairs. As it turns out, it’s Finley and China Girl who end up with the best lines in the whole movie. Anyone (parents included) who was terrified by the winged monkeys that appeared in the 1939 version of “The Wizard of Oz” should be warned that in the new film the Wicked Witch’s computer-generated winged baboons are far more ominous and terrifying (just ask the girl who was seated in the 12th row while I was watching it; she spent every scene in which the monkeys appeared with her head under her mother’s arm). The 3D effects are put to good use here, although they do come close to being abused. The best effect is the use of foreshadowing,
one of the few things screenwriters Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire got right. Oz’s obsession with Thomas Edison, for instance, plays an important role in the wizard’s future use of projection. Even with one thankfully abbreviated musical number, the movie is at least 30 minutes too long. Why is it necessary to drag out scenes containing physical violence? In a lot of ways, “Oz, The Great and Powerful” feels similar to the way Disney treated “The Muppets:” It stuck its fist deep inside (are you following?) and came out empty-handed. No one involved, including director/ horror-master Sam Raimi, seems to be up to the task here. As unnecessary prequels go, this film is near the top of the list. Put plainly, “Oz, The Great and Powerful” is neither. Someone please hurry up and make the “Wicked” movie. (“Oz, The Great and Powerful” is now playing in theaters.) H

HEALTH
ASK THE FITNESS MAN By PETER JACKSON
Q
: I’m trying to lose weight and have been told to stop eating fruit because of the sugar and carbs. The problem is I love fruit! What can I do? A: Eat your fruit – but do so in moderation and be selective. It’s true that the calories in fruit come mostly from carbohydrates in the form of natural sugars (fructose). Bear in mind that the majority of calories in vegetables also come from carbohydrates: should we stop eating vegetables, too, to comply with our low-carb diets? The fact is fruit also contain essential vitamins, minerals and fiber in their most natural form – which is why nutritionists agree they should be part of a healthy, balanced diet. What does make sense is to choose fruits that are low in sugars and carbs. A great choice is avocados which have the least amount of carbs and the most protein of all fruit. And avocados contain monounsaturated fat which lowers cholesterol. Other excellent choices are raspberries, blueberries and strawberries
which are low in sugar and carbohydrates. Add to your list grapefruit, apples, peaches and watermelon. Be careful with grapes, bananas, figs, cherries, and dried fruit which are all high in sugars. Q: Is it best to do my cardio before or after I do my strength training? A: Aside from a light cardio warm-up, I believe that cardio is best done after a strength training routine for two reasons: 1) An intense cardio workout prior to your strength training program depletes your stored glycogen (energy) levels, leaving you fatigued and unable to perform an aggressive weight training routine; 2) After your body depletes its glycogen reserve, it must turn to excess fat for energy. Another approach is to schedule strength training and cardio workouts on different days, or separate these activities by four or more hours (cardio in the morning, weight training in the afternoon) to maximize performance in both areas. Remember, it takes 20 minutes of aerobic activity for the body to begin to burn fat, so aim to
complete three to four 45-minute cardio sessions A WEEK for best results. Meanwhile, I do recommend a quick, 10-15 minute cardio warm-up before weight training to get the blood flowing to the muscles.

EXERCISE OF THE WEEK CONTROLLED ROPE PUSHDOWN This is a terrific exercise to build your triceps. Grab the rope on a cable machine and select a weight that’s comfortable for you. Standing shoulder-width apart, bring the rope down to a full lock-out position, making sure the elbows are full extended at the bottom and the rope is separated. Control the rope on the way up, bringing the two sides together and stop at a half-way
position (as seen in the photo). Proceed to return the rope to the starting position, flexing your triceps at the bottom (as seen in position two). It is important to stop in a halfway position in order to keep the triceps contracted. Repeat steps one and two for 15 repetitions. Perform three sets. ICED CREAM OF SPRING PEA SOUP By CHEF JEAN DOHERTY
reen garden peas, eaten immature and fresh, were an innovative luxury of early Modern Europe and the new United States. Thomas Jefferson grew more than 30 types of peas on his estate, and they were his favorite veggie. Then with the invention of canning and freezing, green peas became available all year-round, and not just during the spring. This is an easy and delicious recipe. Ingredients • 2 lbs of fresh or frozen garden peas • A good dash of olive oil • 1 pint of chicken stock • 1 cup of heavy cream • Smokey bacon • 6 mint leaves
Heat up the olive oil in a pot. Add the peas and sweat them off, covered, for six minutes (save a good cup full for the garnish). Add the chicken stock and the cream, then season and simmer for about 10 minutes. Blend and allow to cool down before putting it into the refrigerator. Pan-fry or microwave the smoky bacon until it’s crispy. Set that aside on some kitchen paper. Blanch the rest of the peas. (Do this by putting them in a pot of boiling water for 15 seconds, and then put them in a bowl of ice and cold water.) Finally, strain them when they are cold.
Just before serving, whiz your iced cold cream of pea for a minute or so in your food processer, and pour in into six martini glasses. Then, garnish with the blanched peas, crispy bacon, and the finely chopped mint leaves. This recipe offers a nice mixture of texture and taste. The velvety texture of the cream of pea soup, the crispy smoked bacon, and the crunch of the whole peas give this soup a strong personality. (It also looks so sexy in that martini glass.)H

POMPERDALE NEW YORK STYLE DELI
A Bit of Brooklyn, A Bit of Schmaltz, and a LOT of Pastrami

By RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

e have to admit it. Deli food is the stuff of legend, and everyone has their own go-to favorite dish, especially when you're faced with the multipage menus that normally top tables where the die-hards gather to “talk story.” In our case, it’s a Reuben sandwich--an admittedly sloppy mess of a thing that includes stacks of corned beef, Swiss cheese, drained sauerkraut, and Russian dressing, and is traditionally held together between two pieces of thick toasted Rye bread and is then grilled to meld all the flavors. We say “traditionally” and “normally” because during a recent visit to Pomperdale New York Style Deli (3055 E Commercial Blvd.), we found out that it’s not the custom there. First, there are no tabletop menus. The selections are posted on wall boards, and all orders are placed at the counter on your left as you enter. Next, the Reuben Sandwich ($11.49) that we requested from the Combination Sandwiches section on the order board came served with all the expected ingredients, but on untoasted rye. The resulting taste experience was no less delicious, but even more sloppy and soggy than might otherwise be anticipated. This was a twenty-napkin experience that dripped with each successive bite. When Pomperdale says that it is the Home of the Oversized Sandwich, it’s not kidding. The Reuben was huge, so thick in fact that some might have a problem just getting your lips around the taste treat. Being a big mouth, we had no such problem, of course, and happily devoured the entire sandwich, grilled or not. We also experimented with the Hand Sliced Nova ($13.95), which is served with a bagel, cream cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion. This order was exactly as we expected, only
better. The bagels served at Pomperdale are excellent and got the seal of approval from Greg, the bagel mensch from Cambridge, MA who is no easy pushover in the bagel marathon. When Greg says its good, you know you’re eating the next best thing to a bagel baked in Brooklyn. Pomperdale New York Style Deli would be proud to be called a joint, because there’s a loose screamover-the-counter type of atmosphere here, whether you come for breakfast (with its three Jumbo Whole Wheat Pancakes with Blueberries for $9.99), lunch (a Chopped Liver Sandwich on pumpernickel is $10.25 on a platter that includes a side salad, lettuce, tomato and onion), or late afternoon snack (a Grilled Cheese Sandwich on Whole Wheat for $6.95). The Pomperdale New York Style Deli is open from 7 a.m. (for early risers) to 6 p.m. for the after-work crowd. On Sundays, they close at 3 p.m. In addition to some tasty side dishes that include two Potato Pancakes for $4.50, Noodle Kugel ($4.95), Baked Apple ($3.95) and Gifillte Fish ($5.95), this deli serves up an extremely good selection of housemade soups, including our favorite Split Pea (served on Mondays only). Soup is $4.50 for a pint, $9.00 for a quart. Like everything else on the extensive menu, you get what you pay for, which is to say that things are not cheap at Pomperdale Deli, but quality and quantity shows. Just remember to order The Ruben toasted, and tell them Florida Agenda sent you.H

arl Marzola is a familiar face in Greater Fort Lauderdale. His roots, which originate in upstate New York, were planted early in South Florida soil. While barely into his teens, Marzola moved to South Florida (in 1980). A licensed real estate broker, he is a member of the Florida Realtors and is the Broker and President of Fort Lauderdale- and Wilton Manorsbased Atlantic Properties International. In addition to his experience as a business leader, Marzola’s credentials also extend to that of community leader, serving on the City of Wilton Manors Economic Development Task Force. Marzola says he sees a great deal of growth and further changes to an alreadydynamic community. He spoke with the Agenda about the area’s past, its present, and what he sees in the future.
Why did you become a professional Realtor? Being a Realtor has given me many opportunities to meet and work with people from all walks of life, and from all around the world. What a wonderful life experience I am having. My clients become my friends. I couldn’t think of doing anything else. When you meet me, you quickly realize I have passion for my profession.
What is the best part about being a professional Realty broker in today’s market? I have always found it to be tremendously rewarding to assist first time buyers in making their first purchase of a home; in a way it’s like helping to deliver someone’s first child. Big picture, I find it equally invigorating when my international clientele seeks my professional advice about purchasing a second or third luxury residence or commercial acquisition, and they do it here, where it creates further opportunity for the community.
How else should a business or community leader occupy his or her time? Real estate can take up a great deal of your time, so it’s important to remember to give yourself time to get involved in other activities, both personal and professional. I try to keep personally involved in as many civic and community activities as my schedule permits and if I cannot make time, I make a contribution to different organizations or charities that are making a positive difference in this place we call home. Currently I am active with the Wilton Manors Economic Advisory Board.
What qualities do you most admire in others? Courage, focus, and discipline. Who wouldn’t want some of those?.
What quality do you think a person needs to acquire in order to succeed? Simply stated, persistence.
Of what quality do you wish others possessed more? Understanding, tolerance, and compassion for others. We should spread that around.
If you could be any other person, who would it be? I wished you had said an animal— then I would be a dog. That would be the life: I would just sit back, not have to worry about food or shelter, sleep whenever I wanted to, lick the hand that feeds me, then roll over and go back to sleep. (Laughs) If only.
What would you be doing if not what you’re doing now? I admit that I’m a creature of habit. So if you placed me on a desert island, I’d love to relax, enjoy some piña coladas for a long weekend, and then start organizing the locals to start selling the pineapple juice to the visitors, along with those terrific oceanfront views.H
What people would you consider your heroes, or the people you most admire? Our men and women in the military services are my heroes. They place themselves in danger for our safety. Our country and our community really need to provide better attention to these patriotic men and women, and service to help them integrate into society. Hire a Vet: he or she is the one who saved your life and preserves your liberty. Carl Marzola

Why did you choose to invest in Wilton Manors? Wilton Manors is becoming a destination location, one that’s not only known by South Floridians and our “snow birds,” but also internationally. The potential of doing business in Wilton Manors is unlimited as the economy continues its growth. I recognized this and wanted my firm to take an active part in Wilton Manors’ progress. We just don’t sell homes; we sell what our community has to offer. The ones who are able to weather tough economic times will see the rewards of hanging in there. It’s all about timing.
Would you recommend your life’s work to someone else? I think if you walked into a room full of people, four out of 10 of them are probably Realtors, so I guess the word is out. It’s a respectable profession for those who treat it like professionals. I’m always recommending it. What we do in the present prepares us for a great future.
Is there a skill you wish you possessed, or did better? That’s a difficult one. I wish I was able to grasp learning more languages.

TRAVEL
LIMA, PERU: Land of the Sun
March 20, 2013 H 28

By ROBERT ELIAS DEATON
P
eru hugs the neighboring South American countries of Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, Chile, and Bolivia like a Wonder Bra, its vast seashore along the Pacific Ocean giving it the kind of sundrenched beaches that act as magnets for savvy travelers worldwide. Historically, Peru was home to the Incan Empire, the largest organized civilization in pre-Columbian America. That’s the empire that gave rise to Machu Picchu, located in the Cusco region of southern Peru and easily the most culturally significant Inca sanctuary in the country, and the centerpiece of Peru’s growing tourist industry. For gay tourists, however, it is the nightlife and nearby beaches of Lima, Peru, that provide much of the attraction in this Land of the Sun. Lima is more than just the capital of Peru; it is its largest city, with 9 million inhabitants, of which some 150,000 are estimated to be gay or lesbian. The predominance
of the Roman Catholic Church there makes a realistic count impossible, since the religion officially condemns homosexuality in any form, and outright displays of any same-sex affection are discouraged. That does not mean that Lima isn’t a fun place for gays to visit. In reality, the Peruvian people are a friendly, dramatic lot whose beauty is legendary. Lima itself has been around since 1535, when Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro came to town. There are six-hour non-stop flights available to Lima at a round-trip price of $702 on TACA airlines, which will be officially changing its name to Avianca sometime this year. No visa is required for U.S citizens and travel to Peru is relatively safe, despite an active drug trafficking route across the border between Peru and Columbia. On the subject of drugs, be aware that pharmaceuticals that are strictly controlled in the U.S. are available over-the-coun-
ter in Lima, including Rohypnol. U.S. customs officers will confiscate those drugs from hand-carried baggage and checked luggage. Ditto coca-leaf tea bags, which are sold by the box in supermarkets in the city. Consuming tea made from these leaves will expose you to small amounts of coca alkaloids (which is the source of cocaine), and will make you test positive for cocaine, an unpleasant surprise for those who work in stateside industries where drug-testing is mandatory (do you remember Elaine and the poppy-seed bagel on “Seinfeld”?). The Miraflores neighborhood of Lima is known for its gardens, beaches, upscale stores, and homes, and one of our favorite hotels in the city: The Miraflores Park (Ave Malecón de la Reserva1035) with specular views of the Pacific Ocean. Miraflores also houses several of the city’s popular gay bars and clubs. Of these, our favorite is Bar BoBo (Manuel Bonilla 109) where gays
and lesbians chow down on tapas and listen to American hits via a live D.J. For dancing, try Club La Sede (Ave 28 de Julio 441), especially popular on Friday and Saturday nights. Another great club (this one in the nearby Lince district) is Andel Bar (Belisario Flores 270), which has no sign. Just look for the bright yellow house on Belisario Flores, ring the doorbell, and smile pretty. We kid you not. A recent addition to Lima is a billboard that makes its own water, complete with a spigot at its base. Since Lima lies at the northern edge of Atacama, the driest desert in the world, this billboard (located at kilometer marker 89.5 on the Pan American Highway) is a treasure, producing 10,000 gallons of free water a year. Stop and taste. Robert Elias Deaton is a worldtraveling epicure who enjoys the finer things in life. H
