James Franco to Accept Ally Award at MGLFF MIAMI, FL James Franco’s smoldering, sexy self will accept the Ally Award at the 15th Annual Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. Franco has been a longtime supporter of LGBT rights, and has often been lauded as a sex symbol. The Exectuve Director of MGLFF, Franc Castro, released a statement touching on Franco’s achievement, but conveniently left out anything relating to his dashing good looks, which was clearly the real reason for the award. “We are thrilled to host an actor of James Franco’s caliber at the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. His multifaceted talents coupled with his contributions to LGBT film both in front of the camera and behind the scenes have helped shine the spotlight on LGBT cinema and a filmmaker’s right to free expression.” The Ally Award presentation will take place on Saturday, April 27th, at the Olympia Theater at Gusman Center in Downtown Miami, following a showing of the film “Out In The Dark” at 9:15.
Being Gay Can Be Costly
April 10, 2013 H 8
PUBLISHER
ST PETERSBURG, FL Equality Florida Founder Nadine Smith is hoping that the ban on gay marriage will come to an end, because simply put, it’s just costing us too damn much. She states that same-sex coupling can cost quite a pretty penny. For instance, for Edie Windsor, it cost about 36 million pennies, or $363,000. But why? Edie Windsor lived with her partner, Thea Spyer, for 44 years. In 2007, they were married in Canada. But when Thea died in 2009, Edie had to pay $363,000 in taxes on her spouse’s home. Generally, heterosexual couples inherit property outright. In 2009, the New York Times spent months calculating costs of gay couples throughout their lives, which included taxes, health insurance, pensions, children, etc. For more wealthy couples, the outcome wasn’t pretty. “For wealthy couples with a lot of assets, the cost of being gay could easily spiral into the

millions”, reported the New York Times. Simply put, the lack of equal rights causes financial strain, both large and small. With the recent surge of gay marriage supporters in the Senate, we might not have to struggle for too much longer.
Bill Nelson Endorses Same-Sex Marriage TAMPA BAY, FL Fret not, lovey-dovey couples; hope springs for your future together. Sen. Bill Nelson has just endorsed gay marriage, following suit with the recent influx of senators who have changed positions on the issue radically. Nelson joins the ranks of senators that have recently changed their minds on same-sex marriage, dozens of which have just been in the past couple of weeks. Nelson gave the Tampa Bay Times a bold, logical statement in regards to his recent endorsement; “if we are endowed by our Creator with rights, then why shouldn’t those be attainable by Gays and Lesbians? Simply put, if The Lord made homosexuals as well as heterosexu-
als, why should I discriminate against their civil marriage? I shouldn’t, and I won’t.” He went on to say that he would be on board with approaching the Supreme Court in an effort to find the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. DOMA is over a decade old at this point, and let’s face it, a lot happens over the course of 10 years. While majority of house members are Republican, given the recent string of senators coming out in support of gay marriage, there might be some hope. After all, recent polls show a slight growth in the favor of legalization. For example, a poll from UCLA’s Williams Institute shows that over the past eight years, every U.S. state has increased its support for samesex marriage by 13.6 percent. According to the poll’s research, if the public’s opinion continues at the same pace, eight states will be above 50 percent in support by the end of 2014. Just days after Nelson’s announcement, South Dakota senator Tim Johnson filed into line, leaving just five Democrats in the Senate who have not endorsed gay marriage. Five? Democrats? If we can get that number to zero, we would be thrilled.

Legendary film critic Roger Ebert has died at the semi-ripe age of 70. Along with Gene Siskel, he ruled the 80s and 90s with an iron fist; “two-thumbsdown” meant you should retire immediately and give thought to an entirely different career altogether. If you received a rare “two-thumbs-up”, you were in like Flint (ironically, “In Like Flint” actually received a poor review from Ebert at its release). Ebert also wrote several books, and in recent years had written political commentary in conjunction with his film reviews. Last month he posted a column online entitled “How I Am a Roman Catholic,” in which he said while he still considers himself a member of Catholicism, he disagrees with the official church stance on many things, including homosexuality. In the column, Ebert stated, “my feeling is that love between consenting adults is admirable”. The inclusion
of supporting homosexuality landed the critic in some hot water, even after death; a picket at the critic’s funeral was planned by the Westboro Church. Fortunately for Ebert’s family and friends, the threats failed to materialize. Ebert’s last review posted was for a film called “To the Wonder”, starring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams. The final words in the critic’s review speak volumes; “there will be many who find ‘To the Wonder’ elusive and too effervescent. They’ll be dissatisfied by a film that would rather evoke than supply. I understand that, and I think Terrence Malick does, too. But here he has attempted to reach more deeply than that: to reach beneath the surface, and find the soul in need”.

sion in a whole new way. Even though the book was produced by a straight company - trust us, it shows - their heart is absolutely in the right place. The activity book is titled “Being Gay Is Okay”, and features traditional family scenarios with same sex parents, famous gay supporters and more - all for the coloring. There’s even a page of “Fabulous Gay Sharing Cards”, where children can trade their Anderson Cooper for a very glittery Neil Patrick Harris, or even a Jodie Foster for a terrifying Boy George. While the inclusion of words like “fabulous” and even a faux “coming out letter” make the book feel a little obnoxious, it’s still a necessity and a huge step forward in normalizing gay youth, same-sex families, in addition to acting as a preventative measure for bullying.

Condoms Take New Shape MARINA DEL REY, CA Traditional condoms are just that; traditional. People prefer to have unprotected sex because it feels better, not because they have a disdain for latex. However, what if it wasn’t because of the condom, but rather the design itself? What if it wasn’t the material or the lubricant, but the actual shape of the condom that turns you on or off? It’s a long shot, but it’s a strong possibility according to a recent interview with Danny Resnic, creator of “Origami Condoms”. The accordian-like design acts as a loose-fitting cover when it’s being used, moving with the natural movement of the body, ultimately providing more sensation for both parties - according to Resnic. Last month the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation who tackles a multitude of global issues gave a shout-out to Origami, stating it is promoting “consistent use by emphasizing the sexual experience”.

KWADUKUZA, SOUTH AFRICA Africa’s first traditional gay wedding has arrived. The country, which is notorious for its negative stance on homosexuality, is now finally getting a taste of what’s to come in the near future. The men who wed, Tshepo Cameron Modisane and Thoba Calvin Sithol, were reported to have married in KwaDukuza, South Africa, with over 200 elated attendees. The ceremony (which was part Zulu, part Tswana) is only one of two ceremonies for the newlyweds; a second, more
intimate wedding will be held later this year in Johannesburg. But wait, there’s more: children via surrogacy is hopefully in the near future for Tshepo and Thoba. Thankfully, the couple has some serious support; “the great step that we took in our relationship as a gay couple was introducing each other to our families”, says Tshepo. “We are so blessed to have supportive families who care about us. Even though we are gay they still love us.”

She’ll perform her new song, “Come with Us”, Sunday, April 14, 2013 on the Main Stage in Lummus Park just off Ocean Drive between 11th and 12th Streets, as part of the Fifth Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade and Festival. “Old club tracks were all about glitz and bling. They were very surface and intimidating. I’d rather my music be inclusive with real substance.” “Come With Us”, a song she co-wrote and produced with platinum hit maker Tricky Stewart (who produced Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies”)

encourages everyone to come to the party. It doesn’t matter if you’re gay or straight, black or white, skinny or plus-sized. According to Gradiva, marching to your own drum is acceptable today. “It means that you are different from others. Our differences are what make us unique and special. Trying to be someone else – or trying to fit in with the status quo - will only dim your light,” she says. She admits that growing up, she was an outsider. “I was the kid with the wild hair, wearing crazy outfits. I loved fashion but not the pretty pashminas and floral dresses all the other girls were wearing. I was always experimenting with avant-garde styles that made me seem a bit freakish to other kids.” The point of “Come With Us” is to make all who listen to it feel understood, embraced and loved. When you fearlessly fight for what you believe in and remain hopelessly optimistic about life, love and the future, you create connection with all in your path, most importantly with yourself.” “Not everyone is going to appreciate you for the real you,” she continues, “but that’s not your problem. That’s on them.” In “Come with Us”, there’s a poignant line that Sasha sings: “when you’re ready, come with us”. “It simply means when you are ready to make change, you will. When you’re ready to get off your ass, you will.” And when you do, Sasha Gradiva will be waiting for you with open arms. H

CHRISTINA WAN’S

P
with a special sauce. There’s no need to pre-order the dish at Christina Wan’s— an added perk for those who are spontaneous where their duck is concerned. The appetizer assortment is what you might expect with Shu Mai ($4.00) leading the list. Wan serves four dumplings wrapped in wonton skin. Not a huge presentation, but tasty enough. Likewise the Pork Dumplings ($7.00), where six pan-browned dumplings are made for heartier appetites. Our personal favorite is the Chicken Soong ($8.00), hot minced chicken, black mushrooms, chopped peas and carrots, served in crisp cold lettuce cups. The is no shortage of soup selections, with Wonton, Egg Drop, Hot and Sour, Miso, Vegetarian, Chicken Corn, Wor Wonton and Dumpling offered in small cups and large bowls ranging in price from $2.00-$8.00. For those who love to explore menus through Early Bird offers, Christina offers Sunset Dinners for $12.00. The choice here is Crystal Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Honey Garlic Chicken, Lo Mein (Chicken, Pork, Shrimp, Beef or Vegetarian), Family-Style Bean Curd, Broccoli Beef or Chicken, Hunan Beef or Chicken, or the Vegetarian Delight. All meals are served with soup and vegetable spring roll, or jasmine rice, brown rice or vegetable fried rice. Add a $1.00 and you can get the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce or Crystal Shrimp or Scallops. All this and the always cheery warm welcome of Christina Wan. Tell her Guy Magazine sent you.H

etite Christina Wan floats through the dining room on silent feet-greeting, soothing, and making each guest feel like a special addition to her collection of friends welcomed to her home for dinner. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never met your host. You become family the moment you enter the door at Christina Wan’s Mandarin House where relatives are everywhere—from serving staff to kitchen help. It is this warmth and fraternity that turns this Chinese restaurant from being a place to get nicely prepared and delicious tasting food into an experience that you’ll want to repeat often. Same-sex couples in particular will enjoy Christina’s warm heart and genuine interest in your life, which is embraced with respect. The menu is a mix of Mandarin, Szechwan, and Cantonese recipes—Chinese standards that are interpreted here with an elegant softness. Nothing jars at Christina Wan’s—from the background music, to the muted hues of crisp white linen and beige wall art, to the food itself which offers flavor without undue intensity. A perfect example is the Szechwan Chicken ($12.00), a traditional blend of julienned chicken, red and green peppers, and bamboo shoots in a light Szechwan sauce that has less heat and more subtle spice than conventional offerings of this dish. When coupled with a ample plate of brown rice, this meal is a restaurant favorite. More complicated and pricy, the House Wor Ba ($23.00) combines pork, chicken, shrimp, scallops and lobster, lightly glossed with a Mandarin sauce, and wok-seared. The drama is reserved for the Mongolian Beef platter ($16.00), which is delivered sizzling fajita hot in a cloud of steam and aroma. Thinly sliced beef is topped here by caramelized onions and scallions in a taste treat. While not a typical Chinese dish, the Rack of Lamb ($25.00) is prepared with a hint of lemongrass and served over a bed of greens. An unusual touch that proves there’s a little bit of rebel left in the kitchen. So too with the Peking Duck ($35.00) that manages to remain moist and crispy

The exclusive London “Fortnum & Mason” claims it invented the portable snack for rich coach travelers in 1738. “The eggs would have been smaller in those days,’’ says the company’s archivist Dr Turner. “They would have been pullet’s eggs rather than hen’s eggs, and the meat would have been gamier.’’ Anyway if you travel to Scotland, Ireland or England without walking into a bar, and havin’ a scotch egg with your pint you’d be nuts. It is certainly true that the quality of the Scotch eggs varies from pub to pub. The finest Scotch eggs I can recall, freshly cooked and of first-rate ingredients, are those I have noshed on in the pubs of Dublin, but then of course I’m bias and being completely patriotic!

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.
Ingredients
• • • • • •
Oil for frying 4 eggs 2 pounds pork sausage 4 cups dried bread crumbs, seasoned A little all-purpose flour 1 egg, beaten
Place the eggs in saucepan and cover with water. Bring to boil. Cover, remove from heat, and let them sit in the hot water for about 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water, cool and peel. Heat the oil in a deepfryer to 375 degrees F. Flatten the sausage and make a patty to surround each egg. Roll it around in the palm of your hands so it’ll stick. Make a ball. Very lightly flour the sausage ball and then coat with the beaten egg. Roll that in the bread crumbs to cover evenly. Rock n roll. Deep fry until golden brown. Place on a paper towel to soak off the max. of the cooking oil. Cut in half and serve over a bed of lettuce and sliced tomatoes for garnish. These eggs can be enjoyed with any sauce you love…mayo, ketchup…ranch? You are the chef!

bring a benefit to the table include calcium, vitamin C, vitamin E, and betacarotene. Using some of these additives also helps to fight against cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses. Additives such as benzoic acid and benzoate, found in your soft drinks, beer, margarine, and fruit products, help protect against fungi growth and bacteria. Nitrites and nitrates also help preserve food from bacteria growth and are typically found in processed meats such as sausage, bacon, ham, and lunchmeats. Sulfites help extend shelf life on dried fruits, shredded coconut, pie fillings, and relishes. None of them are healthy, so eat with caution. A few antioxidant additives are ascorbic acid (vitamin C), BHT & BHA, and tocopherols. They are found in fruit, juices, jams, and canned foods, and any fatty food that can become rancid including some cereals, baked products, potato chips, fats, and oils. Colorings added to food include betacarotene, caramel, carrot oil, citrus red #1, dehydrated beets and FD&C colors: Blue #1, 2; Red #3, 40; Yellow #5 and 6. These additives are used to make the food more appealing to the eye and color expectations. They can be found in many processed foods, baked goods, jams, frostings, confectionary items, and meats. Emulsifiers, thickeners and stabilizers include cellulose, glycerol, guar gum, gum arabic, lecithin, and pectin. These additives are common in soups, sauces, frozen desserts, cream cheese, pudding, milkshakes, jellies, chocolate, and condiments. They improve food’s texture and consistency. Eat wisely and read labels. You’ll be healthier for it.

hat you don’t know can hurt you Very few foods today reach the marketplace free of additives and other substances. These additives do a variety of things to our food—assisting in preventing spoilage, adding vitamins and minerals, and helping to make it more appealing to the eye, to name but a few. The end result is food that is far prettier than Mother Nature ever intended. But prettier is not necessarily better. There are 2,800 additives that American companies can use that are approved by the FDA. Although many people question the safety of these additives, there is very little evidence to suggest any major health risks for most people. But in every case, additives that are purposefully added to foods are there for one reason only—to increase sales, not to better your health. Occasionally, studies have shown that additives that were previously judged to be perfectly safe are found to be carcinogens—the ultimate bad guys. Since most additives have no taste, there is only one way to learn what’s been added to that tasty dish or foodstuff you are about to devour or purchase: Ask to see the labeling. It’s the law that restaurants and grocery stores alike must reveal food content. The real health issue arises from accidental additives. Many foods that have been sprayed with pesticides can still be contaminated even after processing. Some environmental pollutants such as PCB’s, mercury, and lead can be found in trace amounts. Unfortunately, these pollutants are never fully eliminated from the body, so, like radiation, it’s your lifetime accumulation that counts. Other additives find their way into your dairy and meat products through hormones and antibiotics given to cows, pigs, and poultry. These hormones and antibiotics are added to the animals’ food supply to speed their growth or combat disease. Once ingested by animals, it is impossible to remove these chemicals from the processed meat. The most common food additives are sugar, corn syrup, other sweeteners, and salt. These are used to enhance flavors and prevent the food from spoilage, but do nothing to improve your health. The few additives that do manage to

BARCELONA, PART DOS
TRAVEL
The People Make the Difference BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON
I
t’s admittedly frustrating to visit Barcelona. The people are unbelievably adorable—from fishmongers to hustlers, they have fast smiles, a dramatic bent, and the disarming ability to make everything more involved than it needs to be, while seeming not to care about a thing. Storeowners open and close their shops seemingly at will. People eat breakfast at noon and think nothing of including wine with their bread, cheese, and eggs. Of course, the same culinary rationale applies to lunch at 4 and dinner at 10. Forget that half of the people are speaking their native Catalan and the other half are speaking Spanish—or both, just because they can. Yes, they also speak English, with a cute accent that is deliberately enchanting, casting a spell that is impossible to escape. At all times when visiting Barcelona, keep in mind that the locals come from a long line of rebels. The Catalan Revolt of 1640 originated here, lasted for 12 years, and was the splinter in King Philip IV’s side for his whole reign. It is said that the rather inhibited Philip was observed to smile only three times in his life— once when he thought he had actually conquered the citizens of Barcelona. Foolish Philip. While you have absolutely no chance of dominating the virile men of this region, you most certainly will enjoy them, for they seem to be having fun all night long, and in any number of places. Just think LATE. Many bars don’t even open until midnight, and the discos wait until
3 a.m. to wake up the deejay. For those not staying in the gay neighborhood of L’Eixample or Gayxample as its known, take the Metro and come up for air at the Universitat station. There are at last count some three dozen bars within a ten-block radius, so flit from pub to pub in complete safety, regardless of the wee hour. Of the group, our favorites are the Butch Bear (Diputació 206),
whose name says it all, as does Crazy’s (Consell de Cent 245), where the young boys get to tease their way into your heart on the dance floor. For some upscale fun, you cannot miss the Museum (Sepúlveda 178), with its Louis XV Rococo-style furnishings. You’ll remember that Louis XV knew how to party (his mistress, after all, was Madame de Pompadour), and the Museum carries
on the tradition, particularly on weekends. The Super Lemon Sunday T-Dance is staged here from 7 p.m. to midnight. Just down the street and across the block is Metro (Sepúlveda 185), which is open until 5 a.m. and is very cruisy every day of the week. There are two dance floors at Metro, so take your pick of the floor and the boys (who are VERY friendly). It may just be the strong drinks, but we don’t think so. If go-go boys are your thing, the best in town are at Arena Madre (Balmes 32), which is open from 12:30 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. This is not to be confused with the Arena Classic (Diputació 233) or the Arena Dandy (Gran Vía 593), all of which keep the same weekend hours but lack the pole dancers. The best-known bathhouse in Barcelona is called Thermas (Diputació 46) near the Rocafort Metro stop. Most of the cuties here are for rent, just in case you wonder why they’re SO interested in you. For boys that are NOT working, venture across town to Casanova (Casanova 57), which is open 24/7 and has a happening pool party every day. Swim suits not required. Olé.
