BEST LOCAL ACTIVIST Michael Rajner Michael Rajner knows no fear. He has taken on state and federal policymakers, newspaper editors, business leaders, and corporate America in his successful effort to bring attention to discrimination against the LGBT community. In particular, Michael is an indefatigable advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness. He served as National Secretary of Campaign to End AIDS (C2EA) and volunteered as National Community Organizer for the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) and coordinated the AIDS IN AMERICA series of regional meetings and town halls around the nation for people living with HIV/AIDS. In 2011, Equality Florida awarded Michael the “Voice for Equality Award,” and POZ magazine named Michael among its POZ 100 – “some of the bravest, most dogged and downright effective AIDS fighters we know.”

Always the fighter and protector of those less vocal, Michael Rajner is the Legislative Director for the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus.

2013 has been a hell of a year for the gay community. Political debates may continue to rage on over samesex marriage but unfortunately, the world keeps turning. Every now and then we have to stop and take a moment to celebrate all of the things that life offers us, especially within our community. The Deputy Director at the Pride Center at Equality Park, Kristofer Fegenbush holds a Master of Social Work degree from Florida International University. Known for his quick wit, strawberry blond hair, and effective management style, Kristofer can likely be found at any number of fundraisers held each month both for the Pride Center and other AIDS supportive organizations. A native of Kentucky, Kristofer’s southern accent has a way of disarming even the most callous of individuals, whether clients (the Pride Center attracts some 17,000 people to its activities each year), politicians (Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Dean Trantalis is a big fan), or supporters (you know who you are). Once a year, not long before Thanksgiving, when the days are getting shorter and the nights cooler, hundreds of bike riders assemble in Miami for a two-day fundraising event called the SMART Ride. While officially the acronym SMART stands for Southern Most AIDS/HIV RideTwentyThirteen, to those of us at Florida Agenda, it is just a SMART thing to do—raise donations by pedaling the 165 miles between Miami and Key West with 100% of pledges being returned to communities to be used for direct services to those infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. Now in its tenth year, the SMART Ride’s goal to is raise $1 million in donations, and its hope is the same as its hope from day one: that this will be the last year the ride is necessary for our future will be one free of AIDS.

BEST PLACE OF WORSHIP Church of the Holy Spirit Song The congregation that packs two Sunday services at Church of the Holy Spirit Song are a joyous lot. Several years back, while going through a rough patch involving scurrilous Internet gossip and false accusation in civil litigation, I turned to a support group that met once a week, feeling very foolish at first. Then, a peculiar thing transpired. In the non-judgmental setting of this group, it was okay to be sad, and upset, and to feel victimized.

The new senior pastor Rev. Tom Millner, and the two new associate pastors at the time were Rev. Suzanne Taczak and Rev. Leslie Tipton welcomed me to Sunday services, and I hopped into an inconspicuous seat in a pew at the extreme rear of the church. These service had such a liberating effect on me, that I became known as the writer who cries, for each and every service I would vent my frustration and watch as again and again it was absorbed without question.

I still go to Church of the Holy Spirit Song, whenever I feel the need for a good cry and a good sing—music is the lifeblood here. Should you need a non-judgmental house of worship, it does not get any better than this.

That Rosie is a wild girl. Her fun-themed Rosie’s Bar & Grill is an institution in Wilton Manors, festooned with colorful paper lanterns and covered open air seating, giving “festive” a new meaning. While the mood sings party, the food is serious stuff. Owners John Zieba and Cliff Mulcahy see that you’re well fed with big burgers, fresh fish, apps, wraps and salads the size of Cleveland. While everyone seems to have their favorite dish at Rosie’s (ours is the Rose Nylund wrap with grilled chicken, crisp romaine lettuce, shaved Asiago cheese, ranch dressing, keep cozy by a tomato-basil tortilla), there’s much more to the experience here than just the menu. Upbeat music, a cross-generational crowd, sexy videos and endless laughter make this bar & grill, a must to experience.

It’s thick, it’s juicy, and it comes in ten versions. The award-winning burgers at Alibi Video Bar, Café, and Sports Bar are 10 ounces of Black Angus beef tucked inside a toasted Challah bun. So, when The Manor Complex scrubbed is its fancy restaurant with al fresco dining on the Drive, for a joint they renamed Taps & Tapas we werem ore than just a little curious.

Here, among a huge selection of draft beers and bottled craft beers, were teeny plates of provocative flavor.

The goal here is to release you from the decision making process to be free to enjoy the camaraderie of new friends and old. Best Art Event Island City Art Walk It’s sort of a given that South Florida is a cultural melting pot. Our diverse population births an expansive collection of art, and Wilton Manors is no exception.

Island City Art Walk is the perfect event to showcase local talent, due in part to its sheer volume. It spans the majority of the drive, with various participating spaces — everything from bars and retail establishments to independent galleries. It brings the community together in a way that other events can’t and for that, it is truly a winner.

Best Asian/Far Eastern Dapur Dapur’s high-end bar is trendy and tasteful (and tasty too), but the food is even better. The ultra cool spot serves up a fantastic fusion of sushi and Asian tapas. The papaya salad, kimchee and vegetables, ceviche and crispy duck are just some of the menu’s highlights – we’re guessing you’re already salivating. The sushi is just as phenomenal as the tapas, and if you clean your plate, you should strongly consider ordering one of the decadent deserts. The main lounge serves fantastic hand-crafted drinks and even hosts some hip, lounge inspired music. BEST ART SPACE Gallery XO You’re first instinct upon seeing the art at Gallery XO, clearly dominated by the male form, is to reach out and cuddle those adorable pecs, or the bubble butt, or arms perfectly pumped to a size that defies the measuring tape.

You’ll be temped to ask owner Maciel Contelmo for the models’ names; if only under the pretense that you want to know if there was artistic license at work here. As one who knows several of the actual subjects for my rounds for the Florida Agenda, I’m happy to report that no special license is needed to admire these boys/men. While most are in their 20s, what becomes readily apparent is that as these models, they become more attractive. It’s called hard work, and it pays off should you care to invest the time in yourself and your body. And then, just perhaps, you too can be on the walls of Gallery XO. Best Nightclub The Manor The Manor is truly an amazing nightclub.

It hosts such a wide range of themed nights that it has to appeal to majority of clubbers.

The space covers virtually all of its bases: a Latin night, a hip hop room, a house/dance room, drag shows and even some national acts. What’s also interesting is the décor itself.

The interior is decked out with beautiful wallpaper, chaise sofas, and Swarovski red crystal chandeliers, yet never manages to feel intimidating or cold. It’s the perfect spot to dance your glutes off, host an event, or even to meet up with a first date for some happy hour tapas and cocktails. Its 18 and up night might seal the deal for some, but the elegance, charm and comfort make it a universally known and admired nightclub on the drive.

There’s a good reason that there’s always a gaggle of hot men crowding around the openair entrance to the Village Pub on Wilton Drive. Laughing, and touching, and making the kind of eye contact that has “hither-to” written all over their glances, these guys are on the make—mostly single, successful, and fascinated in you. That’s a rarity in this city of tens of thousands of bears, cubs, muscle gods, twinks, drag queens and sissies. Deep inside the Pub, the music is red-hot for dancing, but across the bar near the front doors, thrown wide to the elements, the view is tremendous and tempting. No one strolling the Drive can escape your notice here on the periphery. Be content in knowing that you won’t go home alone, unless, of course, you’ve got relatives visiting from the Olde Country.

Misty Eyez is one part hostess, one part drag and one part local celebrity. Her weekly party at Bill’s, Tranny Palace, brings in people from all walks of life each week to watch her showcase of wild and crazy queens. But while the show in its entirety may be a hoot, the real reason is due to Misty Eyez, aka “The Eyez of Florida”. Misty is hilarious and talented as hell, but her sweet demeanor off the stage is what really sets her apart from the pack. She is also a part of the non-profit organization known as The South Florida Sisters of the Rising Sun, whose goal is to serve the community by fundraising for charitable organizations as well as educating and raising awareness on HIV and AIDS issues. Realty Mogul Rick Gibson Dies At 53 Fort Lauderdale, FL – Highly respected realtor Rick Gibson sadly passed away on the morning of April 25, 2013 at the age of 53. The realty giant was respected by his peers and was a wildly successful gay professional in South Florida. Known for his high standards and attention to meticulous details, Gibson was a facet of the gay community that did not go unnoticed — most notably in his work with Remax Realty. When speaking of the level of commitment to his work, Paul Hyman (who formerly worked with Rick at the GLCC – now the Pride Center), says in a statement to the Florida Agenda: “Rick connected us with essential resources: media, IT, marketing, graphic design and legal. He spearheaded early rebranding efforts and was very generous with his time and money. Rick was no stranger to controversy and was not low maintenance. Since then we maintained periodic contact before I moved away, as well as warm affection and regard for each other. Rick did a lot for our community.

For Gay Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Not Enough

we are” part. Can you really say we come here to be who we are when so many of us are not comfortable being who we are — as illustrated by the many men who dress up as women or pretend to be another person at night while being “themselves” during the day. I’m not judging. I’m asking. But it seems to me that an awful lot of people in Wilton Manors settle in South Florida, not to come to a place to be something, but to escape the real world, whether that manifests itself in pretending to be a different character, promiscuous sex, or indulging in drugs and alcoholism.

Or is South Florida all that different from the rest of the country? (See stats below.) It seems that gays and lebians are more likely to commit suicide than the rest of the general population. So, it may be that, because of the higher concentration of gays in the area, such cases are more obviously frequent. But if we run here to live in a paradise of our own making, the question remains, shouldn’t the rate of suicides be remarkably less?

From my own perspective, I would say the high rate of suicides has to do with how we treat each other. Suicide is the killing of the self. In order to get there, you have to hate your life or yourself.

Perhaps, more appropriately, it’s giving up on a desire to go on. After having lived

here for six years, this is the first job I’ve had among my fellow gay refugees, where I am treated with any kind of decency, even kindness. Prior to this, what I have observed is a contempt by gays for other gays, which can only come out hating who you really are.

I have known of a business owner with an insatiable contempt for older gays, and an equally insatiable appetite for younger ones. When he couldn’t get the latter to kneel before him, he would find a way to get revenge. One such victim who refused his advances had the misfortune of being arrested for possession. The business owner with the obsession for younger men got his revenge by writing about this arrest in a newspaper. As a result, the young man in question became unemployable and ended up hanging himself from a tree (but was rescued in time). This is just one of many such cases involving this prominent resident of Wilton Manors. No one in this community that I have told about these cases has been shocked, dismayed or found it necessary to stop supporting this man.

Maybe deep down we really aren’t proud to be who we are. Maybe we’re ashamed and attack other gays because they represent what we hate in ourselves. In any case, we need to examine what is really going on and deal with it openly.

by george dauphin s we await the final conclusions from real estate star Rick Gibson’s autopsy, we (well, some of us, anyway) contemplate the meaning of all the recent suicides that have touched the gay ghetto known as Wilton Manors. Since I have been the creative director for the Florida Agenda, Gibson may be the third major suicide news story I have had to handle, if it is determined that his is such a case.

In the 35 years I lived in New York, I was touched by only one suicide — that of a classmate while attending Parsons School of Design. In the six years I have lived in the Wilton Manors area, I have known of two suicides of acquaintances, four suicide attempts and countless suicidal tendencies, including my own, prior to being financially rescued by my present employers.

It doesn’t take a Rhodes scholar to understand that something is wrong here.

“Here,” not in the abstract sense, but in the geographical sense. Something is not right with the gay ghetto that we think of as the paradise we’ve flown to in an exodus during the past ten years to feel safe from the rest of the world, to allow ourselves to be who we are.

In his Sports Illustrated essay, Collins says, “No one wants to live in fear. I’ve always been scared of saying the wrong thing. I don’t sleep well. I never have. Choose between a selection of nine tradition Thai spicy sauces or eight non-spicy sauces for a different taste experience for every visit.

This particular evening, we selected Massaman Curry over Sukhothai Veal ($16.50). One of the more complicated flavor pairings on an extensive menu matches red chilis, with coriander and cumin seed, balanced by cinnamon, cloves, star anise, cardamom, white pepper, garlic, galanga, lime, lemongrass, and shrimp paste. This porridge is simmered with potatoes, peanuts, and onions and compliments the sliced veal for a Thai stew effect.

One word: spectacular.

The Crispy Duck ($18.95) is baked to a crunch, which allows the fat to drain from under the skin and saturate the bird for moist delight. When served with the Fresh Hot Basil Sauce, this dish becomes sublime. Susie’s son Eddie Watana says that Sukhothai Hot Basil Sauce is unique to the restaurant and we believe him. It uses a fistful of sweet basil leaves that are sautéed with oil, onion, peppers, snow peas, zucchini, and garlic. The result is an evolution of flavors that changes even as you chew. A remarkable dish that deserves to become the go-to favorite it will become.

Sukhothai is not inexpensive, but worth every penny for the portions are large and the setting is sublime. Florida Agenda knows these things.

ukhothai is a northern province in Thailand, dating back to the 13th century and nestled in the valley of the Yom River. It was the first capital of Siam, and in case you’ve never been, it’s a tranquil place. Lots of zen to spare. While it may seem a radical jump from Indochina to Fort Lauderdale, Sukhothai on East Sunrise Blvd. brings the flavor of Siam into Gateway Plaza.

Sukhothai means “Dawn of Happiness,” and after eating at this peaceful haven of exotic tastes, happy you will be.

The appetizers offered at Sukhothai run from the traditional Spring Rolls ($5.95), the far healthier Summer Rolls ($5.95)—fresh veggies and shrimp wrapped in Vietnamese rice paper, and Ka Noom Jeeb Dumblings ($7.95)—six steamed dumplings with shrimp, chicken, bamboo shoots, mushrooms and water chestnuts that are topped with fried garlic and a brown secret sauce. The favorite of the kid in us has got to be the Mee Krob ($7.95). These fried crispy noodles, seldom seem on local Thai restaurants but popular with Bangkok street vendors, are saturated with a semi-sweet plum sauce and mixed with shrimp and bean spouts. An instant winner.

The Pad Thai Noodles ($12.95) are more than just a tradition at Sukhothai; they’re Susie Komolsane specialty.

Susie owns Sukhothai and knows that a restaurant’s Pad Thai noodles define the place. The rice noodles in this recommended dish are done al dente (or whatever the Thai equivalent is) with a lovely firm bite that is absent in most overcooked Pad Thai. The noodles are sautéed with moist chicken, shrimp, eggs, ground peanuts, bean sprouts and sliced green onions in a cacophony of flavors the dance on the palate.

The dish is perfect to accompany the Tom Kha Gai ($5.50), the soup that blends coconut milk, lemongrass, chopped scallions, chili, galanga (a ginger-like root), mushrooms and lime juice in a recipe that is part fire-part soothing exilir.

survey tries to expose the truth! So, I did this survey at my own expense. I hope you will enjoy reading the results, which are based on 44% return of 134 questionnaires.

For a copy, please email me: PASTORMUSTGO@aol.com. I tried to share the survey results with Durrell and other members of the church board. When told I couldn’t, I explained I would pass out the results to all members in the parking lot. But, Ed Johnson, a paid church staffer, said: “I WILL HAVE YOU ARRESTED BY THE SHERIFF IF YOU GIVE OUT THIS SURVEY ON CAMPUS.” I’m sure you’ll agree, it was not a very Christian response on his part. What is he afraid of? But, it is all too typical of a preacher and staff member who are closed minded and attempt to bully others to keep quiet. I ask you....when many members are leaving or have left....why can’t we speak or discuss it at the church annual meetings. Why can’t we speak or discuss it at the board meeting. Why can’t we let members know why others are leaving the church? What happened to FREEDOM OF SPEECH? It is my church too.

Why can’t we be concerned about our church members? Why can’t we talk about why more than 150 long time members have left and what can be done to try to bring them back or keep more from leaving?

My survey is NOT negative as has been stated. But a very positive effort because the responses expose the truth of what is happening at the Sunshine Cathedral. I hope we all pray that Durrell Watkins can become a better preacher. With insight from the survey results, we all can hope to see a better Cathedral for everyone.

I hope that our EX members who have left might return! But so far, the preacher still doesn’t want people

to speak the truth. We are only supposed to talk about positive things as he dictates, which we all know is just his half-truth. It’s like he wants us to drink his version of kool-aid, without thought or question. He doesn’t want to hear what we have to say. In fact, his last sermon was about me and attacked my freedom of speech. He showed on the big screen in the sanctuary, a person with tape across the MOUTH. It was directed at me to keep my mouth shut. Now you see why I must turn to and publish this in the media. We must try to let people know the truth.

We must let people know why many long-time Christian members feel they must leave their church.

The Sunshine Cathedral is my church too. I will not leave, even though the preacher has asked me to find another church. You guessed it. I refused.

I will be at the church for the long haul, to see preachers come and go.

I am a Christian that believes a good shepherd will find out why any sheep leaves his fold. And then, fix the problems. Our preacher seems not to follow the teachings that OUR LORD has taught us! Why our preacher did not want to do this study is unbelievable! Why doesn’t he want long time members to stay at the church? Why he cannot practice what he preaches makes me think he has a problem!

He and his staff seem to be bullying people so he can have his way, without question or discussion. He seems to hope that people who disagree will leave the church. What kind of church leader is that? Yet, he could take this study, listen to the responses and become a better minister.

If the past is any indication, he will probably become bitter and accuse me of not being a positive member.

We once had a Cross on our Steeple as a symbol of our Christian church.

It is gone. We sing the Lord’s Prayer, but only with Durrell “approved words.” We sing hymns, but only with Durrell “approved words.’ We pray, but only with Durrell “approved words.” We used to have wonderful music, but the choir has decreased to about ten volunteers and two paid. Instead of hearing our 1/2 million dollar pipe organ, we have a poorly played guitar as our lead worship instrument. He removed the words Father, Son, Kingdom and all the other words that we are told are so offensive to women. It seems he has alternative plans and is using the church to do them to fulfill his fantasy world. He seems happier when dressed as a Drag Queen looking for an audience. And, it appears he uses the church to fulfill his childhood dreams of becoming a star, rather than being a pastor, in the true sense of the word, to ALL the flock at the Sunshine Cathedral.

Let’s encourage our members to speak freely and openly. Let’s solve our problems. Let’s leave behind the dictator style of leadership and encourage all to participate. Let’s make our members happy and ask the many who have left to return to the fold. I am a very positive member of our Church, with hopes of seeing Jesus and His Christian teachings back again at THE SUNSHINE CATHEDRAL. Blessings and thanks for reading this,

I love our church. So, I did some research to find out why so many long time members have left and are leaving. This is what I call positive research and the results could help make The Sunshine Cathedral a better place to worship. But, I don’t think our Preacher can accept the results. It seems every time someone questions why something is done or suggests an alternative, he has a very negative feeling toward the questioner. I believe he thinks that it is a personal attack on him. He does not seem to see that feedback can make him a better Preacher and maybe someday, a better Pastor to his flock.

Why did I do research in the form of a survey? Because, the leaders of the church do not want to hear the TRUTH. In fact, it seems open and honest discussion about the many who left the church is not allowed.

The last two years at each of the annual congregation meetings, I was the only member to ask questions. I asked why so many members were leaving Sunshine Cathedral? No answer from the preacher. The January 2013 meeting I said I had a list of more than 100 long-time members who left the Cathedral. I asked Durrell if he wanted a copy. He said NO! Can you believe that? As I continued to ask another question, I was told by a member behind me, to shut up and sit down. I turned around and told that member to go to hell. Then it was announced the meeting was over!

No more questions, no more discussion. This experience made me feel that a survey was needed because I suspected that our preacher and staff might be covering up something. This

and include total body workouts which will work all muscles and increase your overall strength. Work opposing muscle groups in the same workout (e.g., chest and back or biceps and triceps).

• I ncline and Decline Presses and Flyes (for your upper and lower pectorals, respectively) are staples in building your chest. To make your presses about 30% more effective, try replacing your standard grip with a reverse grip.

•S upplementation plays an important role in building muscle. A whey protein isolate (50 to 60 grams a day) together with creatine monohydrate can do wonders to build lean muscle. Mix the whey protein with 5 grams of creatine in 250300 liters of Gatorade and drink one of these 30 minutes before and another immediately after your weight training.

• Add unilateral exercises (working one arm or leg at a time) to your program to even out any imbalances you may have and prevent injury. One-arm Lat Pulldowns and Unilateral Dumbbell Bench Presses are among my favorites. These exercises create instability, which is fantastic to strengthen your core as your muscles are working not only to move the dumbbell but to keep you stable as well.

•P roper nutrition is key. You’ve got to eat to gain mass! Eat small meals five to six times a day, cut out fast food and sodas and drink plenty of water.

Q: Love your column! Great info. I’d like to gain about 10 pounds of muscle. Any advice? – Scott T. A: Focus on increasing your strength rather than your size. The best way to do this is to make compound sets the foundation of your workouts – these are exercises such as the Bench Press, Lunge and Cable Chop which work multiple muscle groups and allow you to use heavier weight.

To work the biceps, for example, you might immediately think of a single joint exercise like a Dumbbell Biceps Curl.

Replace that with a compound exercise like a Seated Row and you will work not only your biceps but muscles in your upper back. The benefits: you’ll burn more calories, your overall strength will increase and your biceps will grow faster than doing the Bicep Curl alone.

A few other quick, random recommendations: • There are dozens of training methods, none of which is perfect, but the concept of progressive overload – making each set heavier than the last while decreasing the number of reps – and training to failure are universally accepted as effective in building muscle quickly. Don’t stop at eight reps on your third set of Incline Bench Presses if you can squeeze out two more!

• Limit your strength training to one hour.

After that time, the body increases its production of the hormone cortisol which has the effect of blocking testosterone and wasting muscle.

• Vary your workouts every 8 to 12 weeks

uepos, Costa Rica is one of those quaint beach towns with tiny stores painted in bright colors and cafes that scream charm and authenticity. The first port on the eight-day msy Wind Star sailing adventure from Source Events, Quepos was once a bustling banana capital, before the Panama disease plague wiped all that out. Tourism fortunately saved the day and Quepos was reborn in an explosion of charm. Located right next to the picturesque Manuel Antonio National Park white sand beach (a scuba hot spot), Quepos is full of internet cafes, which unfortunately were all closed during our visit, since the Wind Star arrived in Quepos on a Sunday—the Costa Rican day of rest.

Finding Internet service was our main reason for leaving the luxury of the sailing yacht. Internet service on the Wind Star is slow and prohibitively expensive-costing $89 for 60 megabytes of service.

Converting that to a number of minutes is impossible, since the rate is based on the type of data being downloaded. Text takes less broadband than pics or videos. A $40 round-trip cab ride to Hotel Casa Roland fixed the problem.

By day two, we found ourselves off the coast of Golfito, known for its sports fishing and the Duty Free Shopping Centre (Deposito Libre Comercial de Golfito), near the border with Panama.

It’s also home to Fish Hook Restaurant located on the pier, popular with locals and tourists alike. In the evening, costumes ruled the pool deck of the Wind Star as the Full Moon Tropical Fantasy Party held center stage, where more than a few Tarzans found a home among a bevy of Carmen Miranda lookalikes.

The following morning, a spectacular sunrise greeted our arrival at Isla Colba, our first Panamanian port, and our first chance to see a salt-water alligator upclose and personal. This 12-footer was big enough to have a name—Tikko—and a reputation—lazy. The unscheduled appearance at fitness trainer Andy Kress’s beach serenity and meditation class made the rounds of the shipboard gossip, leaving all those who missed the class (and Tikko) to settle for photo documentation.

Yet as grand as the Isla Colba beach

barbecue was, it paled in comparison to one given onboard the Wind Star to celebrate its long collaboration with Source Events after a full day of sailing at sea. A full suckling pig took the spotlight along with lobster, shrimp, crap claws, fillet, chicken breasts, salads, and an array of desserts that would be the envy of any pastry chef.

It’s hard to argue with Smith’s assessment of the special time this group spent bonding and sharing intimate moments.

Many had been repeat Source Events guests and none would deny Smith’s suggestion that the “experience is always unique and magical.”

Next week, we’ll share the dramatic conclusion of the voyage—crossing between oceans through the Panama Canal.
