Wanda, whose life will be celebrated at the Boardwalk in Fort Lauderdale on June 10.

MYSPACE-WANDABITCH

Tampa,FL – Legendary South Beach drag queen, Wanda, was shot to death at a friend’s front door in Tampa last week. Wanda (real name Anthony Jerome Lee) was at a friend’s house when she heard a knock at the door while cooking dinner. She opened the door and was shot five times, according to the Tampa Bay Times. While there are no named suspects, investigators told Fox 13 News that the gunman was most likely targeting someone else (afterall, she was a gurest in a friend’s home). The Tampa-born Miami Beach drag queen was known for her unique personality and wild, controversial ways. In 1998, Wanda told the Miami New Times, “I’ve thrown people in fountains, I’ve pulled women’s breasts out, I’ve ruined people’s clothes.... I’m a

comedian. Don’t sit in the front row if you don’t want to be picked on. I’m different. There’s nobody on the beach like me.” Hamburger Mary’s in Ybor City will be hosting a fundraiser on Thursday June 6 to help pay for funeral costs for the performer.

Fort Lauderdale, FL – The San Franciscobased Community Marketing & Insights will host its 14th International Conference on Gay and Lesbian Tourism in our very own city, Fort Lauderdale. Tampa Drag Queen Shot to Death

Tampa, FL – A 22-year-old transgender woman – who does not want to be identified beyond the name “Coko” – was shot in an attack that she claims was based on the discovery of her gender identity. The attacker was revealed to be Tavares Spencer, whom Coko had met before. When she arrived at Spencer’s place, she was forced to the ground, robbed of her purse and phone, and was then shot twice in the hip. Coko then played possum until she had an opportuntiy to run from Spencer, successfully escaping the scene. Coko says that Spencer committed the crime because he wanted a relationship with her until he discovered that she was transgender. Coko is now reportedly in good health.

What Cannes Can Do This year’s Cannes Film Festival was noted for a strong showing by Asian filmmakers and actors. (Pictured here is Zhang-Yuqi in a bright green taffeta dress.) Also worth noting was the Festival’s annual high-profile gala fundraiser for the AIDS research foundation amfAR, in which someone paid $1.5 million to sit next to Leonardo DiCaprio when he goes to outer space on the Virgin Galactic spaceship.

f you get lonely, chances are you have a plethora of options: go out with friends to a bar, movie, restaurant, club, event, party...the list goes on. If you’re looking for some human touch, the options are there as well: Grindr, Scruff, PlentyofFish, okcupid, etc. For most gay men, Grindr is the preferred option. Unfortunately, Grindr’s primary use isn’t for finding your “missing piece.” It’s for finding “any piece.” The app has millions of users worldwide. So many in fact, that when athletes arrived in London for the 2012 Olympics, the app’s servers couldn’t handle the sudden influx of users, causing them to continually crash. The app boasts that it is “the largest and most popular all-male location-based social network,” with more than 4 million members in 192 countries around the world. Sounds like a nice way to meet guys right? Their official site even says, “you’ll always find a new date, buddy, or friend on Grindr.” Unfortunately, the dates and friends are few and far between. Apps that are marketed as an “all-male social network” are just screaming “get off here.” My first experience with Grindr was a few years ago, when I had just moved

to Los Angeles. I only had two friends at the time, so I figured Grindr would be a great way to meet some locals. Though I came across the occassional message containing a picture of a gaping anus, I surprisingly made plenty of friends. In addition to a group of “ride-or-die” friends, I met an amazing man. We fell for each other faster than you could say “mascmusc4same,” but one day, I felt the need to do something ridiculous. I logged into Grindr to check on whether or not he had been active on the app himself. What I found was a changed picture and a daunting line that read, “Online 10 minutes ago.” Why did he continue to use Grindr when he already had a boyfriend? “I just use it to make friends,” he said after I brought it to his attention. Call me crazy, but to me, that says, “I’m happy but I’m still going to keep my options open.” Recently, I decided to try a social experiment with Grindr. I made two Grindr profiles: one with a famed “shirtless pic” and one with a clothed male that focused on what was above the neck. One profile stated that I was looking for NSA (no-strings-attached) fun, while the

second said that I was interested in both friends and dates. The results were shocking. The shirtless profile received nearly three times the messages that the clothed one received. Two out of three of the people that contacted the more conservative profile eventually asked if I wanted to “have some fun.” The same can be said of okcupid and plentyoffish, both websites that aim to cater toward a more serious, relationship-oriented client base, but end up getting flooded with users who are only looking for one-night-stands. Don’t get me wrong. Occassionally, I’m the culprit of a one-night-stand myself. What I’m disappointed in is the fact that there’s no sense of mystery anymore: You receive a picture of every body part before you even see them in person. You get an address – maybe a phone number if you’re lucky – and are told the door will be unlocked, and to just come to the dark bedroom at the back. The only human contact is primal, empty sex. No talking, no getting to know one another – just a quick roll in the hay and off you go. It’s unfair to say that Grindr created the one-night-stand. It is fair to say that they reinvented it.

Same-Sex Marriage Bill Fails to Pass In Illinois

Rufus Wainwright & Husband Speak Out for Binational Couples

Supporters of samesex marriage took to the streets of Chicago hoping to persuade legislators to pass the marriage equality bill.

LGBT Ally Frank Lautenberg First Openly Gay Bishop Elected by Evangelical Dies at 89 Trenton, NJ – New Jersey Sen. Frank LautLutheran Church enberg died Monday morning at the age of 89 after a bout of viral pneumonia took a turn for the worst. The longtime supporter of the LGBT community sponsored the federal anti-bullying legislation following the high-profile death of Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi, who committed suicide after his roommate saw an encounter Clementi had with another man. Lautenberg was also a lead sponsor of the bill that repealed “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin released a statement honoring Lautenberg’s support for the LGBT community: “Senator Lautenberg was a beacon for equality in Congress. He fought for justice with more than simply his vote. He knew bullying in our schools is a scourge, and he stood up to end it. He knew that workplace discrimination and hate crimes erode the freedom of all Americans, so he worked to stop them, session after session.”

Los Angeles, CA – Reverend Dr. R. Guy Erwin was elected as the first openly bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Erwin, who is also the church’s first Native American bishop, was elected Friday, May 31, by the Southwest California synod, an area that covers the greater Los Angeles area. Erwin is currently a pastor at Faith Lutheran Church in Canoga Park, and also teaches religion and history at California Lutheran University. Erwin works on the board of Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries, a supporter of LGBT pastors, and is part of Proclaim, an association of LGBT Lutheran pastors. The board’s executive director, Amalia Vagts, says, “This is a great day for the Southwest California Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. [He]’s a wonderful leader from the LGBTQ and Native American communities.”

A California Bill Challenges The Boy Scouts’ Anti-gay Scout Leader Policy Sacramento, CA – California state Senate approved legislation that will deny nonprofit tax breaks to any youth organization that discriminates based on gender identity, race, nationality, religion, or sexual orientation. The bill passed with a whopping 27-9 vote. Sponsored by Democratic Sen. Ricardo Lara, the bill would make groups like the Boy Scouts of America ineligible for state tax breaks, due to their recent announcement to keep the gay-ban on scout leaders, but not on openly gay scouts below the age of 18. Sen. Ricardo says, “Equality does not have an expiration date – discrimination should not be subsidized.” If the bill is signed into law by the governor, any organizations that fail to comply would have to pay sales tax on food and beverages sold at fund-raisers, in addition to corporate taxes on donations and membership dues.

June 5, 2013 H 9

Los Angeles, CA – Rufus Wainwright and husband Jorn Weisbrodt are in the same boat that many bi-national LGBT couples are facing. While Wainwright and Weisbrodt are legally married in New York, German-born Weisbrodt still can’t get a US citizenship. In a statement released by the couple through domaproject.org, their concerns are loud and clear: “When we married in New York State, we made a vow to be together and support each other for the rest of our lives. In 50 years we will look back at this day as we look back at the 1967 legalization of inter-racial marriages in U.S. – with disbelief that it took this long to recognize equality. Our vow should be protected by the federal government allowing bi-national couples like us a path to a green card.”

COURTESY OF FLICKR-GLNCHICAGO

Springfield, IL – When the Illinois marriage equality bill failed to come to fruition, local supporters were crushed. Bernard Cherkasov, the CEO of Equality Illinois, was particularly upset when he told LGBT paper Windy City Times, “They should be embarrassed of themselves.” In an email to The Advocate, Cherkasov said, “The Illinois House failed to act on its historic obligation. The lawmakers faced a clear majority of Illinoisans who had demanded the freedom to marry, and they choose to adjourn without acting. It is beyond outrageous; it is painful to tens of thousands of gay and lesbian couples who go to sleep [tonight] as second-class citizens. Yet again. But we are not going away. We go back into the field to continue to fight until we have the freedom to marry in Illinois.” According to Windy City Times, the bill’s chief sponsor, openly gay Rep. Greg Harris, said that he had the votes pledged for the bill, but some of the supporters inevitably backed out. There’s some hope for the bill as it will be reintroduced in the fall. Harris admits, “Fighting for equality in this country is the long game.”

onathan Wiley isn’t your traditional Country singer. He was raised in Galvinson, TX by a family within the Penacaustic Church – his father, a preachor. Following his Christian upbringing, he questioned if he was really gay. He began to doubt his feelings toward men and prayed to God for answers. Finally, he came to terms with his sexuality without having to compromise his faith. He believes that God intentionally created him as a gay male. He came out at the age of 14 – on Easter Sunday no less – and surprisingly, his parents were okay with it. Jonathan realized at a young age that music was his future. After an extended amount of time spent singing in his church, he began to dream of a singing career. Jonathan recently appeared at South Florida Dancing with the Stars, where he performed a moving Jason Mraz song in honor of Michael Festa (of MSB Fitness), the recipient of the Making A Difference Award, an award that honors those who help others with HIV issues, health and wellness. Wiley says that the song he sang touches him deeply. He says, “It shows you not to give up on life...just keep going – everything will work out for the better.” While Jonathan was working at a gay bar in Texas, he met his partner Ronnie. Ronnie had never set foot in a

gay bar before, but after seeing Jonathan throw someone out of the bar, he knew they had to meet. He mustered up the courage to go into the bar to talk to his new bouncer beau, where the two hit it off right away. Wiley says that Ronnie is “The best person [he’s] ever met.” As a performer, Wiley faces obstacles daily. It’s a cutthroat industry, but he’s confident in his success. He knows that his career will be promising because of

his strong faith and confidence: he tells us, “you should always be yourself and have confidence in what you do. Don’t just try, do.” His determination and confidence makes him just one of the many heroes here in South Florida who are thriving through adversity. “Cockpit” Is Dirtier Than It Sounds

A GALA Old Time

Pam Ann’s “Cockpit” tour is just as dirty as it sounds. When speaking to us about the evolution of her character over the years, Pam says, “She never used to swear or be filthy. I know, that’s hard to believe. My language has gotten more aggressive and dirty over the years. It’s from working in gay clubs all over London. I’ve developed a lot of bad habits.” The air hostess with the mostest will be heading to Miami with hilariously raunchy material in hand, so don’t leave home without your sense of humor. After all, Pam has high hopes for her American audience: “They are my favorite in the entire world. They come with massive smiles and are ready to have a good time.” 8 p.m. Colony Theatre. 1040 Lincoln Rd, Miami Beach, 33139.

Presented by the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, “A GALA Old Time” acts as the closing finale for their 27th season finale. “A GALA Old Time” celebrates the 30th Anniversary of GALA Choruses (The Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses) with some of the most popular numbers sung by America’s GALA choruses from the time of inception, all the way up until now. Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus describes the music as “[standing] the test of time!” Selections include “Marry Us” from The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, “Diversity” from the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles, “In My Mother’s Eyes” from Turtle Creek Chorale, “Love Don’t Need A Reason” from The NYC Gay Men’s Chorus, “The Testament of Freedom” (a 1943

It’s Wayne Brady’s Line Anyway If you don’t watch the newly rebooted version of “Let’s Make A Deal” on CBS, you might remember Wayne Brady from the famed, “Whose Line Is It Anyway,” where he was a regular guest who participated in various improvisational excursions. Brady grew a strong fan base on the show, proving that behind those dashing good looks lurked a quick wit and a sharp tongue. He will be making a stop in south Florida for a night of stand-up, and judging by his track record, we’re pretty sure you won’t want to miss it. 9 p.m. Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. 5550 NW 40th St, Coconut Creek, 33073.

The Island House hits the mark by somehow being classy yet sleazy, chic plus sexy, inviting yet exclusive, and an all-around great time. And it is that blend of refinement and bathhouse that sets the Island House Resort apart from any other place of its kind on earth. This multi-level compound of guest rooms, apartments, and suites was originally opened in 1976 as a 19-room allmale guesthouse, with rooms at the time costing $13 a night. The oldest part of the complex dates back to 1895, when it started life as a captain’s house--a far cry from the lavish oasis the Island House was to become. That transformation began in 1999, when local couple Jon Allen and Martin Kay bought the then dilapidated property just off the corner of Fleming and White Streets. Martin, with his degree in landscape ar-

chitecture from the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew in southwest London, at one time had a thriving chain of floral shops in England. Jon, with his degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was an international businessman whose last straight gig was as a product director for Payless Shoes. Together, the pair sold their assets and moved to Key West where they purchased the shell of the current Island House, and went to work performing miracles. All it took was a herculean effort, a lot of blind faith, and $2.5 million dollars in spare cash to shutter and paint, redesign and transform. Tiles floors, new plumbing, expansion of buildings, a new pool and its accompanying bar and café, a rooftop sundeck with misting system, plus mesh loungechairs that mold to your body atop freshly fluffed towels that never seem to be in short supply. They added a fitness center (the only place that total nudity isn’t allowed), two Jacuzzi’s—one inside, one out; a sauna,

a steam room, plus a video lust lounge hidden from view up a set of stairs and down a red hallway. Then they added the pillow-top mattresses, the flat screen TVs, the leather seating areas, the com-

pletely wireless all-access free Internet, a free business center with computer printer, round-the-world newspapers, and original male nude art from the owners’ private collection spotted through the complex and inside individual rooms and suites. To hear them tell it, it’s all in a day’s work. Every afternoon from 5:30-7 p.m. is a free happy hour, where guests mingle with each other and the all-male staff, who genuinely seem happy to say hello. Credit the smooth running business element to Jon (with a special nod to Gordon at the front desk). The creative elements are all Martin, who lavished the place with hundreds of thousands of dollars in tropical plants and flowers placed just so. (Well, he is a landscape architect, after all, and what’s good enough for Kew Gardens works just fine, thank you, in Key West.) You’ll find the little slice of heaven known as the Island House Resort at 1129 Fleming Street, at the very tip of the Keys, but within easy walking distance of all that’s quaint and important. Their toll free number is 800-890-6284, and yes, your cell phones work just fine there, even at the end of the earth. The best place to be.

often produces amazing results; or, should you choose to eat food preserved with sulfites, be aware of any reactions in your body they may trigger. When mold triggers your asthma attack, steering clear of mushrooms, yeasty breads, cheese and even soy sauce is a wise choice. Opting not to eat these certain foods will definitely lessen your chances of reoccurrences of this chronic condition. On the other hand, there are certain foods that will lessen your chances of future attacks including those that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which naturally fight against inflammation. Eat these foods, and help to minimize future bronchial inflammation. Foods rich in Omega-3 acids are salmon and other cold-water fish, sardines, mackerel and canola oil. Eating fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C is a way to help fight bronchitis, which can contribute to the severity of asthma attacks. Also choosing foods rich in zinc. Good sources for zinc are lean meats, oysters, yogurts and whole grains. Zinc also helps the body to create and keep a healthy immune system, which benefits your over-all health. Chicken soup and its broth help thin bronchial mucus, which means less stress for the lungs. A complete and rounded diet that purposefully includes these foods greatly increases the chances of asthma sufferers to prevent future attacks, while improving their health in general. Being proactive and selecting a diet that fights back against disease is an all-natural approach to all-around good health. Eat well and breathe easier. sthma is one of the most common forms of lung disease in the world today. It is also the leading cause of childhood deaths and should not be taken lightly. When an asthma attack strikes its victim, he or she experiences labored breath, wheezing, chest tightness and constriction of the lungs causing a bronchospasm. These attacks can come out of nowhere and can be quite severe. Harmless everyday substances and activities can trigger an attack. Most asthmatics have the benefit to often pinpoint the source of their attacks. For the lucky ones, it’s as obvious as airborne toxins, environmental pollutants, dander, or pollen that can easily be avoided with a little vigilance. An inhaler is one of the ways to fight an attack, for the short term. However there is a long-term way to keep your frequency of attacks down and it can start at mealtime. Few asthmatic relate their attacks to meals, assuming because it is a lungrelated disease, it must be caused by an airborne issue. Yet an asthma attack can be precipitated by as simple an act as ingesting salicylate acid that’s found in unripened fruit, particularly blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupes, dates, raisins, kiwi fruits, guavas, apricots, green pepper, olives, and tomatoes. It’s the same salicylate that is found in over-the-counter medical treatment Bayer aspirin, Doen’s Pills, Kaopectate, Pepto Bismol plus Benzoyl peroxide (PanOxyl) and other antiacne treatments. Sulfites are another danger asthma sufferers face, with many found in preservatives. These preservatives can be found in numerous everyday foods, particularly dried fruits, so be sure to read your labels before consuming sulfites. Eliminate them from your diet completely

BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY

lfredo is a sauce made from cream tossed with Parmesan cheese and butter. It’s supposed to accompany pasta, and It’s so easy to make you’d be crazy to buy it in a jar. It was named by an Italian restaurateur at his restaurant Alfredo on the Via della Scrofa in Rome. Of course, it may be mixed with any ingredients, such as pasta, broccoli, parsley, cream, garlic, shrimp, or chicken. As the story goes, Di Lelio’s restaurant became famous when Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks stopped in and fell in love with the dish “fettuccine al burro” while on their honeymoon in 1927. To express their gratitude, they gave him a golden fork and spoon along with a photo of them eating in his restaurant. He proudly displayed the photo on the wall. Pickford and Fairbanks served his dish to their friends and associates when they returned to Hollywood. Word about the new dish quickly spread. Alfredo Di Lelio retired in 1938 and sold his restaurant. The new owner kept the restaurant’s name, menu, traditional

recipes, photos on the wall, and everything else; the restaurant is still in business under the name Alfredo alla Scrofa. • 1/4 cup butter • 1 cup heavy cream • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 1 1/2 cups freshly grated Parmesan cheese • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium low heat. Add cream and simmer for 5 minutes, then add garlic and cheese and whisk quickly, heating through. Stir in parsley and serve. Use your preferred pasta ‘cause “you are the chef!”

FILTHY WATERS

Q & A

An Interview with John Waters BY GREGG SHAPIRO

T

In addition to being an author, filmmaker and aficionado of distinctive holiday music, you are also a stage performer, with your “This Filthy World” live show, for example. What do you enjoy about performing in front of an audience?

here doesn’t seem to be anything that John Waters, America’s premier queer Renaissance man, can’t do. He’s a filmmaker, an author, a journalist, a visual artist, an obscure music aficionado and monologist. He practically invented (and later perfected) the indie film genre with classic cinematic works including “Pink Flamingos,” “Polyester” and “Hairspray” (which was later adapted as a musical for both the stage and screen). A raconteur of the highest order, Waters has been touring his oneman show “This Filthy World” around this filthy world for several years, revising and refining with each performance. I had the honor of speaking with John about same-sex divorce, a “Hairspray” pilot and what it was like to hitchhike across the country.

I can always play myself easier than I can play somebody else. I like writing the material. It’s another writing job. It’s another way for me to tell stories. I meet my audience. I test jokes and I can talk about something that happened that very day. It’s something that is constantly revitalized, I hope, and updated. I sing for my supper, that’s how I make my living. Can you see a significant evolution of “This Filthy World” since you first performed it?

Gregg Shapiro: John, I’m glad to have the chance to speak to the living you, especially after the unfortunate March 2013 internet report to the contrary claiming you had passed. Was that the first time that you were ever the subject of an internet prank or hoax?

They have a better sense of humor. They’re better writers.

June 5, 2013 H 24

The last time we spoke was at the time of the publication of your book “Role Models.” Looking back on it, how would you rate the experience of writing and publishing that book? It was one of the best experiences of my life. It was a bestseller on the New York Times bestseller list – one week! – and it spent many weeks on the LA Times bestseller list, and other lists as well. I just finished my new book, called “Car Sick,” for FSG, the same publisher. Writing books is something that I’ve always

Courtesy of John Waters

John Waters: That I know of, yes. And it wasn’t that funny. The Onion would have done it much better.

enjoyed doing. Both “Shock Value” and “Crackpot” have never gone out of print. I’ve had good luck with writing books. I read all the time so it’s proper that I continue to write books just as much as I try to make movies. What is “Car Sick” about? In “Car Sick,” I hitchhiked by myself across America. The first part of the book is me imagining, before I left, the 15 very

best rides that could happen, with sex and adventure, and then the very worst 15 rides I can imagine, which ended in my death. And then the next day I did it for real, which was 21 rides in nine days. Where did you go? From the front door of my Baltimore house to the front door of my San Francisco apartment.

It came from when Divine and I used to go to colleges and show the movies. It would be a 5-10 minute introduction and I would come out dressed kind of like a hippie pimp in shirts with shrunken heads on them. I think (punk musician and actor) Stiv Bators wore that same shirt in Polyester years later. I would talk about nudist camp movies and things that nobody else ever talked about then. Then I would introduce Divine and he would come out. His act was very much like the act that was in “Female Trouble.” He would rip a telephone book in half. He would throw dead fish in the audience. Then, if we had more of a budget, if it was a bigger city, we would have a fake cop – because I had a stolen police uniform and a short-haired wig – and we would cast some cute guy as the cop who would come on stage and pretend to take us away for obscenity and Divine would strangle the cop. The audience would cheer and the movie would start. That’s how it began. And I’m sure it never could be that good [laughs]. Now it’s gotten to the point where I don’t show my movies, I don’t even talk that much about my movies, because it has become much more of a spoken word act. I was influenced by the baggy pants comedians

They’re usually like, [sings] “Love and marriage…,” Doris Day or something. And I like that, too. I think that breaking up usually inspires more songs. I had a great picture of me that was never used from when we released “Cry-Baby.” I had a shot of every star at the end with a single tear, crying like Cry Baby. I shot one of myself, and that would be the cover. Do you think you will ever create a sitcom or dramatic series for television? I have already written “Hairspray” as a pilot, so, yes, I think it would certainly be possible. I’m not saying against it. I think TV certainly has as much freedom as independent film does and you’re paid better and there’s more chance of getting it made. Do you have any new movies in the works? I don’t spend a lot of time doing that because I think the independent film as I knew it is over right now. They want me to make a movie for half a million dollars, which I’ve done, and have no desire to do again. The rest of my career is going better than it ever has in my whole life. Right now I can’t afford to make movies. I had a meeting this week about another movie. I’m still trying to make them, but the business has radically changed. If you’re 16 or 18 and starting to make movies, it is the best time ever. Hollywood is looking for you.

June 5, 2013 H 25

[Laughs] Maybe same-sex divorce. That would be, to me, a newer subject. I always said if you want to make money, invest in gay divorce and tattoo removal. Two of the biggest growth industries we’re going to have in the next decade. I doubt I’ll do another compilation. The record business is not so great and I love those two albums, but I did not have a great relationship with the company that put them out. I think they bungled it. You know what? Everybody says that about music. Except now I have proof [laughs]. I think I was kind of soured from that experience, even though I was really pleased with the music. They were received quite well. I always wanted to do one called “Breaking Up With John Waters.” All great music is about breaking up. You ever heard a good, soulful song about a happy, functional marriage? I don’t know of any.

Are there any new music compilations on the agenda — perhaps one with a same-sex marriage theme?

that I used to see at the Gaiety Burlesque in Baltimore at the end of vaudeville. I’m probably the only film director that has a standup act. No, Kevin Smith does, too. He has one. His is very good.
