and junior tennis standout Bobby Blair’s still untitled memoir. It is such a privilege to be asked to write what we know will be an important book that helps generations of young male athletes in so many ways in the years to come.”
The statement from author Barry Buss comes as a major triumph for Bobby Blair,
who’s memoir is confirmed to be published later this year. Buss says, “This is will be the story of one brave and courageous man. I couldn’t be more honored than to be asked to help tell such a private and personal story.” When asked why Bobby’s story is particularly special, Buss says, “It ties in to the homophobia and intolerance within the field of male contact sports. There’s no way that you can be the best athlete you can be without being yourself. The story aims to help young athletes especially. It encourages them to be themselves, without fear of judgement.” He goes on to say, “We want the closeted community to overcome their fears. To be themselves in an intolerant society. We want to engage the gay community openly, while removing the taboo, fear and stigma surrounding the gay community. When a straight community envisions someone like Bobby, they picture a straight male. It’s time to grow up.”
A DIFFERENT KIND OF LOVE “People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.” — Martin Luther King Jr.

1983 US Clay Cou National Aaron K rt Finalist ri Became ckstein Of The T One o Players p 10 In The Wo rld ways, it is always the righting of a profound wrong, addition by subtraction, the truth emerging by the cessation of the big lie. But these acts of individual courage are sporadic, random, with no cohesive plan of action associated with them to make the environment that is professional sports a safe and inclusive environment for young gay male athletes. Why could the LGBT community not get organized behind these scattered acts and employ a program to aid and support all the closeted gay athletes suffering in silence in high school and college team sports the nation round? We keep waiting for that marquee name to come out at the pinnacle of his sporting career. But what if he doesn’t appear? What if he doesn’t exist? Society just runs the numbers and assumes statistically he is there. Matter of fact, they’re damn near certain about it. However, I know a few things about trying to become an elite athlete. I played some serious tennis back in my day;

April 29th, 2013. Sports Illustrated breaks the big scoop. The first male athlete in a major American team sport is to announce he is gay. Rumors of such an announcement were swirling for a few weeks now in the sports world. Who would it be? Which sport would it be? Would it be well received? Would this be the beginning of more and more gay males across the entire athletic spectrum to come out?The story breaks. It’s professional basketball player Jason Collins. Never heard of the guy. Huge let down. I read his “story” in Sports Illustrated – a glorified diary entry with no back and forth. It reads like a drive by. Within 24 hours, the media circus is in full effect. All the usual suspects chime in with their words of support; even the President gets in on the act with a high profile public phone call. Oh the evolution of it all. Something about the whole event didn’t seem right to me. I dug in a little deeper into who Jason Collins is. 34, career lows in statistics on one of the worst teams in the NBA, and a free agent to-be on July 1st, 2013. He came out after his season
was over, he does not have a contract for next season, meaning he really is not the first active athlete to come out in one of America’s four major team sports. All the talk of this being some kind of game changing moment just didn’t seem justified to me and now I was starting to see why. It didn’t take long before some high profile public figure failed his tolerance test. Chris Broussard, some two bit, back bench, anchor at ESPN pretty much declared that Collins was going straight to hell according to Broussard’s Christian orthodox views. Super. Now this was the story less than 48 hours after Collins declaration. I sensed the gravity and game changing moment slipping away as all the attention shifted to Broussard’s backward ass views. Thousands of young gay male athletes hide in plain sight daily from the intolerance and homophobic cultures that are male team sports. How was this ever going to change when the media can’t stay with the true story for more than a news cycle? I put my head down that night encouraged by Collins’ courageous act but disappointed at what I sensed was going to be little more than just another in a long list of individual acts. I’ve followed the process of male athletes coming out for some time now. Every act of coming out is equally powerful to me, showing great courage by the individual, but in so many

ason Crane will be the first openly gay person to climb the Seven Summits. His expedition was photographed and proudly shown on his various social media accounts, providing him with a huge LGBT fan base. In the photos, Crane is seen posing with rainbow flags as he ascends Mt. Everest, eventually reaching the summit – the sixth summit that he’s reached to date. The journey chronicled (which is already 18 months in) is just one part of The Rainbow Summits Project – an initiative to raise funds and awareness for The Trevor Project, the leading LGBT suicide and crisis prevention organization, by climbing the highest peak on each continent, known as the Seven Summits. Crane will be the first openly gay person to climb all of the summits, in addition to becoming the fifth youngest person ever to do so. The next summit on his list is Mt.
“...Though it was very difficult at times, I know that I came out a stronger and more balanced person as a result, and I feel like the same can be said for... obstacles faced by LGBTQ youth today: it might seem tough, but it’s worth it.”

McKinley (also known as Denali), in Alaska. Denali will be his last climb in his Seven Summits quest. Crane told the Florida Agenda, “I’m very excited to be on Denali this year because it’s actually the 100th anniversary of the first ascent of the mountain. As an American, it’s very exciting to conclude my journey in our own country.” Crane told us his next “Everest” is starting school at Princeton University in the fall. He plans to study international relations. When speaking of the support from the LGBT community, Crane was nothing short of gracious: “I’ve received a lot of positive feedback from the LGBT community. I love sharing my story with other people, especially LGBT youth,
and so I speak at a lot of schools. I always find these experiences incredibly rewarding and inspiring because the young people I meet are doing such great work in their local communities to improve the climate for LGBT people in general. The other young people I meet – especially in more conservative areas – are the real heroes. They keep me going up these big mountains and inspire me every day. I think that the top way that my journey and Rainbow Summits Project has changed me is that I’m now more aware of my own strengths and weaknesses as a person. When one takes on the challenges in their life, they have an opportunity to learn a lot about themselves. The past year has been filled with challenges
and also some exceptionally rewarding moments, and I’m very lucky to have learned a lot from my experiences. I’m glad that I decided to pursue this journey because, though it was very difficult at times, I know that I came out a stronger and more balanced person as a result, and I feel like the same can be said for a lot of the personal challenges or obstacles faced by LGBTQ youth today: it might seem tough, but it’s worth it.” Crane is just the role model that LGBT youth (and community) is in need of, and thankfully, he’s here for them. Crane urged that if you ever need a teammate or just someone to chat with, to call the Trevor Lifeline at 1-866-4-U-TREVOR. “They’re always there for you,” he says.

Suspect Being Held For Anthony Jerome Lee (Wanda Drag Queen) Murder Tampa, FL – Following the death of South Beach/Tampa drag queen Wanda (Anthony Jerome Lee), a suspect has been arrested. Lakeland resident Deandre Tolliver was one of three suspects who arrived at the East Tampa home where Wanda was staying on the night of her death. After answering the door, Lee was forced inside by Tolliver, where he was shot and killed. Tampa police did not explain the shooting in detail yet, nor have they announced what Tolliver’s motives were.

Key West, FL – In the cover of a weekly Florida Keys publication, Conch Color, twin sisters donning graduation gowns were featured. Twin sisters Liz and Erin Czerwinski made history by becoming the first sisters to become Valedictorian and Salutatorian at Key West High School, achieving GPAs over 4.7. Liz and Erin were raised by two gay moms, proving that same-sex parents can raise children just as well as heterosexual parents. The two sisters credit their community for their success, stating that it’s always been there for them and was always accepting of their family. “It’s definitely different being raised by two moms, but the community of Key West has always been supportive. We have a lot of loving people down here that have made Liz and I feel very comfortable. I wouldn’t want to trade my family experiences for anything,” says Erin. Tampa, FL – According to Equality Florida, the commission voted 7-0 to repeal the eight year anti-gay pride ban in Hillsborough County. Executive Director of Equality Florida, Nadine Smith, described the commission chambers as “absolute pandemonium” following the vote. Commissioner Les Miller received a standing ovation for his rebuttal, where he described himself as an African-American who has experienced bigotry firsthand. From losing jobs to enduring racial slurs aimed at him (while he was in his Air Force uniform walking down a street with his daughter nonetheless), Miller made his
point clear. Smith concluded, “It is an amazing day. It is a turning point, and [we] have so much more work to do.”

n just a few months, we enjoyed a string of successes in the struggle for same-sex marriage, including legalization in Delaware and Minnesota. We witnessed the French legislature pass a law legalizing same-sex marriage, making France the largest country to enact such a law. No doubt these were great strides in the struggle for gay equality. But then came the backlash. Hate groups and thugs randomly targeted gays in the streets of New York City, where Mark Carson was shot dead; in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and in other U.S. cities; in Eastern Europe, where gays still struggle for even the basic right to be open about who they are; and in France, where last week Clément Méric, was declared dead at a hospital in Paris. Méric had been attacked by a neo-Nazi group that opposed the gay marriage law. He was 18 years old. Florida Agenda was among the first LGBT publications to cover the repercussions of the gay marriage successes in our May 22nd issue. We hoped to call attention to what was going on throughout the world. Others organized marches to protest the new violence against gays. New York City Council Speaker and lesbian mayoral candidate Christine Quinn has made free classes in self-defense available to NYC gays. All very well and fine. And we will be following these developments in future issues. We know that we have a president who is not the type to give rousing speeches in the tradition of FDR, to move the country to a more calm, unifying and accepting attitude. So, we are not looking for a solution from President Obama. But there is an opportunity soon to come in Washington that could strike a blow for equality for gays and the rights of all citizens. That opportunity is the U.S. Supreme Court decision on the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8. But this is a very long shot. The Justices of the Court are widely expected to be timid in their final decision. All indications during the arguments are that they are not viewing these

cases as landmark cases to strike a blow for freedom and equality. Only Justice Elena Kagan seemed to get to the heart of the matter: that the argument that the purpose of marriage is for procreation is not a valid one. She questioned whether same-sex marriage would be harmful to the country. But Kagan’s wise analysis was interrupted and almost ridiculed by Antonin Scalia. Justice Kennedy suggested that there could be a valid argument that same-sex marriage may be beneficial to the 40,000 children who live with gay parents in California. But that is beside the point. The point should have been EQUALITY. The Court cannot ignore the fact that, if I do not have the same rights as every other citizen in the country on account of the fact that I am gay, then I am not equal to every other citizen — regardless of whether I want to get married or not. The very fact that there is a law that says I do not have the same rights as everybody else makes me a second-class citizen. So, here is an opportunity for the United States Supreme Court to take a stand

for humanity, to live up to the words of Thomas Jefferson, that “All men are created equal.” Now, more than ever, their voice for equality must be loud and clear. It must be heard in the Russian Duma, where this week a law was passed to ban all gay protest and display, including Pride parades. The U.S. Supreme Court must make it clear that we are different from that. They must make it clear to all the thugs who would consider gay bashing and killing in the streets of New York and throughout the world that equality, freedom and tolerance are values that are essential to this country. This is not a time for timidity. A compromised, half-hearted, limited or uncertain decision may do more harm than no decision at all. They must rule that DOMA and Prop 8 are fundamentally unconstitutional and morally wrong in that these laws turn every gay man and woman in the United States into an inferior citizen. The Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court are smart enough to understand what needs to be done. The question remains: Are they brave enough to do it?

Wright-Patterson AFB, OH – Air Force Major General Patricia Rose was promoted on May 31, making her the highest ranking (openly) gay officer in the military. Rose is the Mobilization Assistant to the Commander, Air Force Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. Rose also works as a public relations and marketing director for a hospital as part of her civilian work. Rose’s wife, Julie Roth, is a retired Naval Officer. The two were married in Washington last year. Army veteran and OutServe-SLDN Executive Director, Allyson Robinson, said in a statement: “Our congratulations go out to Major General Rose and Lieutenant Roth, both for General Rose’s promotion and for their integrity in being honest and open about who they are. These are our core values, and they set an example for our troops that is our courage and our diversity that make us strong.”
Des Moines, IA – The fight for marriage equality tends to keep falling back on biblical verses that dictate that homosexuality is a sin. However, according to an article published by DesMoinesRegister.com, biblical texts do not always support the claim that marriage is to be between “one woman and one man.” In the Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible, the definition of marriage is a little vague: “Marriage is one expression of kinship family patterns in which typically a man and at least one woman cohabitate publicly and permanently as a basic social
unit.” The phrase “at least one woman” suggests that polygamy was both allowed and supported at one point. In 2 Samuel 12:8, the scripture reads that it was God who gave David multiple wives: “I gave you your master’s house, and your master’s wives into your bosom...And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more.” In Deuteronomy 22:28-29, rape victims were forced to marry their rapist. From Deuteronomy 25:5-10, Genesis 38 and Ruth 2-4, we learn that a man is obligated to marry his brother’s widow regardless of the living brother’s marital status. The article concludes that “while it is not accurate to state that biblical texts would allow marriages between people of the same sex, it is equally incorrect to declare that a ‘one-man-one-woman’ marriage is the only allowable type of marriage deemed legitimate in biblical texts.”
Delaware Senate Approves Transgender Rights Bill Dover, DE – On Thursday June 6, the Delaware Senate approved a bill that would add “gender identity and expression” to the state’s anti-discrimination and hate crime laws, according to the Washington Blade. The vote wasn’t exactly a slamdunk win, but after a lengthy debate, the bill was favored 11-7. Margaret Rose Henry (D-Wilmington), who introduced the measure late last month, was thrilled with the passing, stating: “This bill lets people know that Delaware will welcome you and that, in keeping with our highest ideals as Americans, we will not tolerate discrimination or violence against a person based on their race, color, religion, sexual orientation or now, based on their perceived gender.” Equality Delaware President Lisa Goodman was equally thrilled, telling the Washington Blade, “We are so Will Target again support Tom Emmer?

Antigay Politician To Run For Bachmann’s Seat
London, England – According to gay British Lance Corporal James Wharton, when he was harassed and threatened by six other soldiers, Prince Harry came to his defense. When the six soldiers verbally harassed him and even threatened to beat him, Wharton went directly to Harry, his tank commander at the time (circa 2008, according to the Daily Mail). Wharton told Harry, “I think I’m going to be murdered by the infantry.” After telling the prince everything that happened, Harry said, “Right, I’m going to sort this s*** out once and for all.” He left the tank to talk to a senior officer, and when Wharton looked out to check on the incident, he said he saw Harry “having a go.” Wharton’s life is chronicled in his new book, “Out In The Army,” where he tells tale of being out in the military as well as his camaraderie with Prince Harry.
Saint Paul, MN – Rep. Michele Bachmann may be leaving her seat in Congress, but don’t celebrate too soon, she may be replaced by someone just as antigay as her. Tom Emmer, a former state representative with strong antigay views, has announced his run for Bachmann’s seat. In an op-ed for True North (a conservative, right-wing website), Emmer said that Minnesota’s marriage equality law could be chalked up to discrimination against those who disagree with it. You may also remember in when he ran for governor in 2010, Target and Best Buy received some major heat from LGBT shoppers for donating to a political action committee that supported Emmer.

ne of the biggest LGBT figures within our community boldly told us, “I was sort of a late bloomer. I didn’t recognize I was gay until my mid-to-late 20’s.” City Commissioner Dean Trantalis came to Florida from Connecticut in order to come out and figure things out. Unbeknownst to him, in 1982, Fort Lauderdale wasn’t the place for tranquility and solidarity – at the time, it was quite the hot spot for the gay population. He looks back at it as a fantastic experience: “Every day was like a party.” Throughout his entire life, his parents didn’t understand what being a gay person truly was. Only in the last 10 years has he finally involved his family in his personal life. He credits their healthy relationship to the distance between Connecticut and South Florida acting as a buffer. At the end of the relationship, he was looking for something new to do with his time and efforts. As it happened, it coincided with the beginning of the Equal Rights movement in Broward County—a movement which Trantalis embraced and promoted. From 19901991, a number of measures were introduced and, along with a select group of others, Trantalis help collate the community into a cohesive force for change. Unfortunately, most of the other Equal Rights advocates died during later years from HIV. He is one of the last remaining original LGBT organizers still active in the community. He pushed their work as far as he could, eventually passing the Equality Rights Ordinance of 1995. It added sexual orientation to a protective class to the existing equal rights ordinance in Broward County (they have since added Transgendered). It was a huge step for the community. After the ordinance passed, there could be no discrimination in housing, work or public places. “I felt very good about what I was able to do with others over the years.” He decided to go into mainstream politics in 2002, and was elected into the city commission of Fort Lauderdale in 2003, serving one term. “We’ve all learned that unless we have a seat at the table, our voices, our opinions are never going to be given the dignity. A friend of mine would say, ‘If you don’t have a seat at the table, you’re more than likely going to be on the menu.’” While he has endured struggles (he’s lost friends to suicide, he endured the break-up of a long-
term relationship and ultimately, his loss in a mayoral campaign), he has never really thought of himself as a loser. “I felt I did my best and that we empowered our community. While it was a political loss, it wasn’t a personal loss...Sometimes you have to just go through the emotions of life. Do the right thing, be the best person you can be.” Trantalis is proud of our community’s growth. He
says as a community, we aren’t divisive, “we’re just opinionated.” He says, “We’ve grown so much and we’re able to have multiple efforts side by side. We don’t want just one organization – we have too many voices. We have so much to be proud of.” For the full interview, visit floridaagenda.com and guymag.net

UK pop band One Direction is the modern day guilty pleasure. Interestingly enough, the band placed third in the 2010 season of The X Factor. Now, the band has helped to create a piece of modern music history by sparking a newfound interest in boy bands. Ala ‘N Sync, the group has already gained a cult following, selling millions of albums and singles in an extremely short period of time – less than two years. The band is now so established that they had to even had to book two show dates here in South Florida: June 13 at the BB&T Center and June 14 at the American Airlines Arena. 7:30 p.m. BB&T Center. 1 Panther Pkwy, Sunrise, 33323/ American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd Miami, 33132.

The self-taught canine expert’s television show, “Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan,” is in its ninth season and is broadcasted in a whopping 80 countries worldwide. The Mexicanborn dog trainer illegally crossed a US border at the age of 21, with no friends or family, and no knowledge of the English language. The wildly successful trainer is known for his work with overly aggressive dogs and is frequently bit and attacked. He will rarely admit defeat, which has likely lead Milan to a clear path to success. 8 p.m. The Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.
Canadian duo Dragonette is known mostly for their collaboration with Martin Solveig on his 2010 single, “Hello.” The lyrics, “I just came to say ‘hello,’” will be forever burned into your brain – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Singer Martina Sorbara has successfully mastered modern pop music with highly addictive hooks and choruses that rival some of the most esteemed power-pop giants of the 80s. Dragonette’s last album, “Body Parts,” was one of the better dance albums of 2012, with a fresh take on modern bubblegum-pop that was received well by critics and fans alike. See the Canadian duo when they make a stop in Miami to support “Body Parts.” 10 p.m. Grand Central. 697 N Miami Ave, Miami, 33136.

Phi Phi O’Hara Loves Her Phans See Ru Paul’s Drag Race Season Four contestant Phi Phi O’Hara in all of her fierce glory. The controversial drag queen received flack for her theatrics on the show, prompting anti-Phi Phi supporters to create a Facebook page titled, “Phi Phi O’Hara, Sashay Away.” But as we know, with haters comes fans, or in Phi Phi’s case, “Phans.” She may not have won season 4 (losing to Sharon Needles instead), but she still has a gained a dedicated fanbase due to being the “underdog” and “disliked” by so many. In the first episode of season 4, Phi Phi stated, “You don’t need RuPaul to be big. I can say for a fact that people who knew who Phi Phi was before I got here. So I don’t need RuPaul to say I’m sickening. I know I’m sickening.” Her special performance at The Manor is guaranteed to turn heads. 10:30 p.m. The Manor. 2345 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Maurice Sendak In His Own Words and Pictures Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Things Are” is one of the most iconic children stories to date. For many people, the tale transcends adolescence and stays with them throughout a good portion of their life. Spike Jonze even turned it into a slightly more adult-oriented movie for both little and big people to enjoy. “Where the Wild Things Are: Maurice Sendak in His Own Words and Pictures” is a national traveling exhibition that, according to the museum, encourages visitors to explore “their inner wild things,” featuring interactive exploration of both images and characters from some of Maurice Sendak’s most beloved books. “Where the Wild Things Are” will be open to the public until September 15. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Young At Art Museum. 751 SW 121st Ave, Davie, 33325.

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA
TRAVEL

he skyline of Birmingham is a wash of cinnamon, rust, and faded turquoise, silhouetted against Red Mountain, immediately south of downtown. It’s an area that’s been recently gentrified and flowering with new restaurants, art galleries, and the Alabama Ballet, an awardwinning classical dance company. Alabama is a late bloomer where LGBT rights are concerned, with same-sex activity only legalized ten years ago. During the following decade, even as the state has remained defiantly polarized, the city of Birmingham is radiant in its pride. American Airlines flies from Miami non-stop to Birmingham, known locally as the Magic City for its uncanny ability to reinvent itself. Over the years, the region has taken quite a few hits economically. Once a steel and limestone capital, the region became notorious for its civil rights struggle in the 1950s and 60s, as racially motivated bombings earned the city the nickname “Bombingham.” Birmingham is surrounded by long-established affluent neighborhoods where refinement and immaculately groomed lawns are the order of the day. There’s no better place to experience how the

other half lives than to take a drive to Mountain Brook, which lies southeast of the city. In addition to grand estates, expect to be amazed at the number of trees providing shade in this 12-squaremiles of privilege, with 92 percent of the area under tree cover. For those who like to shop, the Wynfrey Hotel (1000 Riverchase Galleria), melds Southern hospitality with European elegance. This modern, five-star hotel is directly connected to the Riverchase Galleria, featuring over 200 shops and stores, and Alabama’s top tourist destination. Less grand, but far more happening, the Aloft Hotel Birmingham (1903 29th Avenue S) is in the suburb of Homewood, on the edge of Soho Square with its chic shops and eateries. In the diverse downtown area, the place to absorb the heritage of the city
is by strolling (or biking) through Railroad Park (1601 1st Ave S). This park is a 19-acre green space in downtown, situated along 1st Avenue South, between 14th and 18th Streets. Hailed as “Birmingham’s Living Room,” Railroad Park provides a historically rich venue for local recreation, family activities, concerts, and cultural events, while connecting Birmingham’s downtown area with Southside and UAB’s campus. The Alabama Theater (1817 3rd Ave N) is a must see. Built in 1927, the Moorish design has been fully restored and stands as a testament to the grander of classic movie palaces. The theater is featuring a summer long film festival that kicks off this week with “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and continues right through the end of August when “Gone with the Wind” provides an appropriate finale.
The best—well, the only—gay dance club in town is The Quest Club (416 24th St S). There’s the usual drag shows (with a mint julep flavor), and a packed dance floor, in case rubbing young flesh ia your thing. It’s officially a private club, charging $5 cover for those 21 plus, and $10 from those 19-21. Our Place (2115 7th Ave S) is located close enough to the university that its primary customers are college students. This is both the good news and the bad news. Yes, they are young and cute, but they’re also naïve and curious. If Daddy is a good and patient teacher, this will be on your hit list. Looking for good Southern food? Look no further than Highlands Bar & Grill (2011 11th Ave S) where grits, gravy, biscuits and spicy seafood cover every base. It’s the Southern way.

STUFFED TOMATOES PROVENÇALE
I
t is sometimes claimed that the ancient Romans, as well as medieval cooks, stuffed animals with other animals. An anonymous Andalusian cookbook from the 13th century includes a recipe for a ram stuffed with small birds; And a similar recipe for a camel stuffed with sheep stuffed with bustards stuffed with carp stuffed with eggs….! British celebrity chef Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall has championed the ten-bird roast, calling it “one of the most spectacular and delicious roasts you can lay before your loved ones at Yuletide.” A large turkey is stuffed with a goose, duck, mallard, guinea fowl, chicken, pheasant, partridge, pigeon and woodcock. The roast feeds around 30 people, and as well as the ten birds, also includes stuffing made from two pounds of sausage meat and half a pound of streaky bacon along with sage, port and red wine! Today I’m keeping it simple…we’ll just use a pound of meat and some tomatoes:
June 12, 2013 H 18
• 6 big ripe beef tomatoes • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 1/2 pound Italian pork sausage meat
RECIPE
• 1/2 pound lean ground beef • 1/2 cup finely chopped parsley • 1/4 cup thinly sliced basil • Salt and freshly ground pepper • 5 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Preheat the oven to 325°. Cut across the tomatoes horizontally, leaving the top half slighter smaller than the bottom to create a lid. Set a strainer over a medium bowl. Scoop the tomato seeds into the strainer; press on the seeds to extract the juice. Using a small spoon or melon baller, scoop out the center of the tomatoes and coarsely chop them. Add the chopped centers to the juice in the bowl. Add the sausage, beef, garlic, parsley, basil, salt, pepper and 2 1/2 tablespoons of the olive oil and knead to combine. Set the tomatoes in a large baking dish and season with salt. Spoon the filling into the tomatoes, cover with the lids and drizzle with the remaining 2 1/2 tablespoons of olive oil. Bake for about 1 1/2 hours, basting occasionally, until the tomatoes are soft.

sliced sweet ham, combined with roasted pork, swiss cheese, pickles and mustard, and then pressed and toasted until all the flavors melt into a single statement spelled “delicious.” Again, it’s traditional Latin fare that is presented here, with a consistent quality throughout. A new version of the old favorite, the Philadelphia Steak Sandwich, turns up at Sweet Bananas as a Chimi-Churri Steak ($8), with grilled steak strips, sautéed onions, swiss cheese, and chimichurri sauce, all over-stuffed inside a toasted white hoagie roll. For the uninitiated, chimichurri originated in Argentina and is a sauce (and marinade) made from parsley, minced garlic, extra virgin olive oil, oregano and vinegar. Occasionally tomatoes and red bell peppers are added for color, though not at Sweet Bananas. It makes for a steak that is served up garden fresh, with a crunch and succulent flavor that is hard to miss, and equally hard to beat. For less bread, but just as much flavor, opt for the Calle Ocho Wrap ($8). This dish features mojo roast pork that’s more chucky than shredded, white rice, black beans, with fresh chopped pico de gallo sauce. It’s a crowd-pleaser, judging from the smiles on the lips of the three teens who wolfed down their portions, washed down with soda, available in refillable cups. The sides complete all the meals, with Banana Chips (excellent!) added to all sandwiches and wraps for free. Think about your own adds of Sweet Bananas ($2), Yuca Frita ($2) or Hand-Cut Fries ($3) to round out any plate. You won’t be disappointed. Sweet Bananas Grill. Fresh. Latin. Fast.

or months now, we’ve passed by the bright lime green awning marqueeing Sweet Bananas Grill, wondering what lie behind the front patio filled with misters and white outdoor furniture. So on a rainy afternoon, with an empty stomach and some time to kill, we pulled in behind two postal trucks and sauntered inside. The layout is simple enough, and easy to navigate. Steam tables and register to your left; a small counter with stools to your right. Straight ahead, a few two-top tables and a self-serve soda machine. The simple menu of Sweet Bananas belies the multitude of flavors at work here. Those with the heartiest appetites will find the Fast Plates the way to go. A meat order (Chimi-Churri Steak, Ropa Vieja, Picadillo, Mojo Grilled Chicken, ¼ Roasted Chicken, Mojo Roasted Pork or a Vegetarian Mix) is combined with one, two, or three side dishes of your choice—with each side dish upping the price by a dollar in a meal that ranges from $4 (the ¼ roasted chicken with one side) to $9 (the chimichurri steak with three sides). The driver of the postal trucks were already midway through a Picadillo plate ($6), a traditional Cuban ground beef recipe that combines onions, potatoes, bell peppers, tomatoes and a few other ingredients in a stew that’s wholesome goodness on the go. Literally translated, the name Picadillo means “bits and pieces,” and as served at Sweet Bananas, it’s a hearty sweet and savory dish. Add some Veggie Yellow Rice and Banana Chips to complete the plate, and you’re talking a full stomach fast from this Cuban comfort food. Sandwiches are big and fresh off the grill here, combining the same selections as the Fast Plates, but encased in a sub roll or tortilla wrap. We personally found the signature Cuban Sandwich ($6) to be a bargain. Imagine layers of thin

World-Renowned Tennis Coach Nick Bollettieri with Top Ranked Player Bobby Blair except in the one detail: that being who we were born to love. Its those repercussions; the smears, the devaluing, the ostracizing, the hate, or even worse, that we fear from coming out. It can be such a lonely place, all those years knowing that if I can never get over my fears, how can I ever expect them to. I knew the community needed to do more, and then I realized I am my community and that I needed to do more. I’ve been out to my family, friends, and in my professional life, but not in the tennis community that I spent so many productive years chasing excellence at the highest levels of our sport. I needed to tell my story to the tennis community, but not as some isolated act of “coming-out” courage, but as the first important act in a program of concerted action to help make professional sports, and in particular my sport of tennis, a safe, inclusive and tolerant environment for the next

generation of young up and coming gay athletes. The numbers are staggering. Thousands on top of thousands of young players at the junior, college and professional ranks, and not a single gay male tennis player out in the open about his sexuality. Tennis culture can say whatever it wants about being tolerant of those with different sexual orientations, but the gaping disparity between the openness of women associated with our sport as compared to men over the same time span speaks loudly that all is not right for young gay males trying to live lives of dignified authenticity in and around the sport of tennis. A lot needs to change and I have set my future sights on being an integral part of that change. First, by telling my story; and second, by being part of future courses of action to change tennis culture so young players no long have to live in shame and fear while pursuing their athletic dreams. Coming out is not about you getting to know everything about my private life. It’s about not having to keep private one of the most important aspects of my life. It’s about no longer having to hide an essential aspect of who I am while standing in plain view. It’s about being able to honestly and with courage being able to tell my story to you here now, about being able to share my experience with you now in the hopes that it helps this next generation of aspiring gay athletes, it’s about being able to declare with pride and confidence that my name is Bobby Blair, a former a professional tennis player, and a gay male. was one of the top American junior tennis players of my era, have a marquee victory over a grand slam champion at a former grand slam venue. I intimately know the complexities of trying to build a strong and unflappable sense of self while living a lie. And I am absolutely certain my growth and development as a young professional athlete was hampered by my not feeling safe to be my true self in my sport’s culture. And I’m also absolutely certain that if the Jason Collins of my era came out as this one did, it would have felt so awesome to know I was not alone in loving who and how I loved but also know his coming out would have been grossly inadequate as a source of strength and motivation for coming out myself. It’s because tolerance is not a concept that gets paid lip service in the abstract by wildly successful professional athletes when the cameras are rolling. Tolerance is a mindset that gets challenged in every encounter, every conversation, every handshake, every look and glance far away from the tape recorders and bright lights of our mass media, day after day, week after week, year after year. Most in our day and age are increasingly hip and with it that gay people are no different than anyone else. It’s the fear of the repercussions from those who are not ok with the fact that we are exactly like you in every way

1. WHITE PASTA: White pasta will never be OK to eat when your goal is to look fit. Sorry, it’s filled with way too many simple carbs. These plentiful carbs have one singular goal: to become stored on your body as fat. Substitute: Spaghetti Squash. On those nights when you really crave a big bowl of noodles, try this instead. Poke a spaghetti squash all over then bake at 400 degrees F for 45-60 minutes. Remove from the oven, allow to cool, scoop out the seeds and then scrape out the long, noodle-like strands of squash. Serve these healthy noodles with spaghetti sauce and lean turkey meatballs. 2. STORE-BOUGHT SALAD DRESSING: The nutritional benefit of your salad is all but undone by the questionable ingredients in store-bought salad dressing. From trans fats to preservatives, store bought salad dressing is a landfill of unnatural ingredients that are best avoided. Substitute: Simple Homemade Dressing. Making your own salad dressing is so simple, it literally takes less than five minutes, and it tastes so much better freshly made. Here’s the equation to use when making your own dressing: • 3 parts high quality oil - extra virgin olive oil, hemp seed oil, flax seed oil, or sesame seed oil. • 1 part something acidic - vinegar, lemon, lime • A dash of salt and fresh ground pepper • Some fresh or dried herbs
4. SWEETENED YOGURT: Little cups of fruit-flavored yogurts are often marketed as the next best weight loss secret, but you know better. These ultra-sweet concoctions are filled with sugars, corn syrup and preservatives, which will derail your fitness results and send you on a sugar high. Substitute: Plain Greek Yogurt with Fruit. Plain Greek yogurt has more protein and far less sugar than the cute little fruit-flavored yogurt cups. Dress it up by adding your own, chopped fresh fruit. I like raspberries or blueberries on mine.
Personal trainer Etzer Seraphin demonstrates the Single-Arm Dumbbell Scott Curl. Photography by Tobysphotos.com
EXERCISE SPOTLIGHT Single-Arm Dumbbell Scott Curl The Scott Curl is named after 60’s bodybuilding champion Larry Scott, according to Reps magazine. It’s an effective exercise to explode your biceps because it increases the length of time the biceps is under tension, especially at the point of peak contraction since it’s impossible to rest at the top of the movement. 1) Use a preacher bench or lean against the top pad of a weight bench, allowing your arm to hang forward (as shown), holding a dumbbell with a palm-up grip. 2) Without swinging, curl the dumbbell as high as possible straight up toward your shoulder. Squeeze the biceps at the top for a count, then slowly lower to the start, coming to a full stop before going into the next rep.
5. POTATO CHIPS: Around three o’clock in the afternoon, when that vending machine is calling out your name, remember this fact: Studies show that a potato chip habit caused subjects to gain weight even faster than an ice cream habit. This is likely due to all the preservatives, trans fats, empty calories and salt, and how hard it is to each just a few. Substitute: Bake Kale Chips Kale chips are crunchy and satisfying, just like potato chips, yet you’re able to crunch away guilt-free. Filled with fiber, protein and real food nutrients, this is one crunchy snack that won’t expand your waistline. Here’s how to make them at home: Wash and tear one bunch of kale into chip-sized pieces. Toss with a tablespoon of olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place on a baking sheet and bake at 300 degrees F for 12-15 minutes. The quickest and most permanent way to lose weight and feel amazing is through a combination of healthy eating and consistent, challenging workouts. 3. BLENDED COFFEE DRINKS: Coffee chains have made it socially acceptable to sip on a large blended coffee drink topped with whipped cream, anytime and anyplace. Unfortunately your body is going to respond to all that sugar in the only way that it knows how: by storing it as fat. These blended drinks are extremely addictive,
so it’s best to avoid them completely. Substitute: Unsweetened Iced Tea. The whole idea behind blended coffee drinks is to quench your thirst, but there are more fitness-friendly ways to do so. Double brew 4 cups of your favorite tea - try Chai Rooibos - then chill it in the fridge for a few hours. Serve over ice and sweeten with a sprinkle of Stevia if needed. Guilt-free refreshment.
