Same-Sex Couples Can Get Green Cards Washington, D.C. – Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napoliatano, officially confirmed that binational same-sex spouses are eligible for green cards in America, just like any other heterosexual married couple. Napolitano says, “After last week’s decision by the Supreme Court holding that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional, President Obama directed federal departments to ensure the decision and its implication for federal benefits for same-sex legally married couples are implemented swiftly and smoothly. To that end, effective immediately, I have directed U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services USCIS to review immigration visa petitions filed on behalf of a same-sex spouse in the same manner as those filed on behalf of an opposite-sex spouse.”

Lesbian Lawmaker Fights for Equal Rights in Alabama Montgomery, AL – Patricia Todd is the first openly gay lawmaker in Alabama history. She plans to fight the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, but for now, marrying her partner in Massachusetts on September 14 will have to do. Todd says, “The reality is, unfortunately in Alabama, the only way we ever progress any civil rights in this state is through a court decision. This is no different. We will have to use that process and move forward.” When speaking of the Supreme Court’s ruling, Todd said, “The court really did open

it up for us to have legal standing to challenge these.” The Alabama Legislature passed the ban on same-sex marriage in 1998.

Justice Kennedy Stops A Pro-Prop. 8 Group in Its Tracks Sacramento, CA – The pro-Prop. 8 group known as Alliance Defending Freedom sent out an emergency petition to put an end to same-sex marriages in California. The group filed the petition to stop the samesex weddings, stating that the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals shouldn’t have allowed them to happen so soon (just days after the SCOTUS decision), claiming that they were wrong for not adhering to the typical 25-day waiting period. Antigay groups are furious with the lack of time, leaving them virtually no time to protest or file grievances. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy said no to the proposed petition refusing further comment.

The First Same-Sex Marriage in Delaware Dover, DE – State senator Karen Peterson and partner Vikki Brandy made history on July 01, becoming the first same-sex couple to get legally married in Delaware, according to The News Journal. After they were pronounced woman and wife, the room’s cheers went off the charts, eagerly celebrating the historical moment. While the marriage is only recently legal, they seem to see things differently: “We’ve been married for 23 years.”

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Community Leaders Stand Up Against Norm Kent’s Bullying BY GRANT JAMES

“By repeatedly publishing half truths and manipulating the facts, the SFGN editor (et al.) has apparently made it his goal to hurt, damage, and/or cause defamation to the reputation of PSF as an organization as well as all of its Board members,” said Hansen. “Some examples of this include: ‘He [Marc Hansen] has demanded SFGN cease further contact with him’, ‘to deny the South Florida Gay News documents we are entitled to,’ ‘Pride South Florida Refuses to Release Tax Records’, ‘IRS threatens to revoke tax exempt status,’ and so many more.” Hansen says, “PSF is in no way attempting to engage in a ‘conspiracy of silence,’ nor is it hiding anything from the community it represents and depends on for support.” In the statement, Hansen sets the record straight:

F

ollowing the recent SFGN articles that degraded and bullied the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation, a number of community leaders are beginning to step forward, each sharing their own personal horror stories surrounding publisher Norm Kent. Community leader Vincent Clancy, in the midst of being very disturbed with the coverage of the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation (a foundation that Clancy has supported as a dancer in Dancing with the South Florida Stars Season 1), felt it was his community duty to report to the Florida Agenda malicious and unethical behavior by Kent which has negatively impacted his business, Da Vinci Realty located on both Wilton Drive and Las Olas. SFGN published two articles on Denny Hughes, who was at employee of Clancy’s, claiming Hughes stole escrow funds. Unfortunately, the article mistakenly listed Hughes as one of Clancy’s realtors, instead of his actual position: an assistant. Instead of printing a retraction or a clarification, SFGN simply ran another article providing an update on Hughes’s charges. Even though DaVinci Realty continues to be a leader in South Florida real estate, Clancy claims the articles have negatively affected his business, in regards to bringing in new real estate investors and in his ability to hire real estate agents. Clancy claims that Mr. Kent allegedly bribed him indicating through a phone call that if he would start buying ads, he would not publish any future negative pieces on DaVinci Realty regarding Denny Hughes. “Mr. Kent called me one day and said he was going to run a story on Denny Hughes,” said Clancy. “My firm used to advertise in his paper and he said if I would come back, the story would not run. Mr. Kent ran the story and an update to the story a year later, with statements out of context and lies. DaVinci Realty Group does not and has never had an escrow account for client’s funds. That story is still on the internet doing harm to my firm.” Another community leader, Marc Hansen (President of Pride South Florida), released a statement to The Florida Agenda, addressing a variety of the remarks made in the SFGN article that he says are not only bullying, but false as well. He began the statement with a poignant point: “The definition of manipulation is, ‘to control or influence somebody or something in an ingenious or devious way; to change or present something in a way that is false but personally advantageous. Manipulators are very good at what they do – controlling others. Their

tactics vary, but the goal is always to get you to do what they want. Manipulative behaviors can include threatening, demeaning or bullying. By definition, Pride South Florida (PSF) feels that they have, and are continuing to be subjected to behavior by the Publisher of the SFGN that constitutes manipulation & bullying.” PSF has said that they have every intention of continuing its transparency to the public for which it is a part of, offering to publish (with full disclosure) any and all information regarding IRS communications once they are finalized.

“We received a form letter from the IRS following a recent audit covering the years 2010 & 2011. The letter was a result of the IRS not receiving information that was sent to the auditor following a request made for same. A response is being pursued by PSF to the IRS to rectify the issue. As this is an important and pending situation, PSF requested legal advice. Upon receiving a news media request for information on this matter, PSF was advised not to release anything until the matter is resolved. This is what the media was told. Regarding communication to the media, in order to maintain consistency and abide by the bylaws of the organization, the Board was reminded that only the Officers are to make statements to the media. The revised & adopted 4/23/13 state: ARTICLE V – DUTIES OF THE OFFICERS Section 1: President/Vice President ‘President/Vice President (aka Co-Chairs): … The Co-Chairs will act as the sole spokespersons for the Board, and will represent the Board to outside organizations and the media.’ PSF respectfully requests the community-at-large to understand they are acting in good faith and with no malice of intent. PSF will share the outcome of this event when it is closed and final. We thank you for your patience and understanding, along with your continued support as we strive to maintain our good standing for and within the community we represent.” As stated above, the facts are that per PSF’s By Laws; the only people allowed to speak about organization business are the Co-Chairs, but according to Hansen, neither Kent nor Parsley ever called either of the Co-Chairs after June 13 to the best of their knowledge. “These reporters from SFGN had no problem calling several Board members,

floridaagenda.com

July 3, 2013 H 7

Hansen says that the alleged initial phone call (which occurred on or about June 13), between Hansen and Kent, left Hansen feeling verbally abused, attacked and bullied due to the fact that he would not provide the information that Kent wanted immediately. Hansen says, “Kent was told that the documents he was demanding couldn’t be released at that time, but would be as soon as the matter was closed. Attempting to circumvent Hansen’s denial, Kent proceeded to call the organization’s accountant, reportedly stating that he was given permission to obtain the documents from him, even though he (Kent) was fully aware that was not true.” SFGN Associate Publisher, Jason Parsley, recently attended a PSF Board meeting, where Hansen feels that he selectively reported the event. “Mr. Parsley left out many of the occurrences that happened during that meeting which only go to support the feeling of PSF about being manipulated,” said Hansen. “Some of the outstanding highlights that have been excluded from any reporting include, but are not limited to: members of the PSF

Board being yelled at, verbally assaulted and bullied by a SFGN employee (and PSF Advisory Board Member) John Fugate; Mr. Fugate was seated at the table as a Board Member, but was observed by several other Board Members taking the steno pad from Parsley and writing down notes for the article being worked on (just like a member of the media). At that point, Fugate became a reporter and no longer an Advisory Board member, which is why no documents or files that Fugate was demanding were released.” According to Hansen, Parsley was confronted regarding the defamatory inferences the paper was making by repeatedly utilizing a graphic of Hansen superimposed over a backdrop of rainbow-colored $100 bills as well as the similarity between Hansen’s actions with those of Michael Cruz’s felony. Hansen asserts, “Per the United States Internal Revenue Services’ request, the advice of legal representation PSF has been consulting with, PSF is not currently permitted to discuss the details of the IRS audit. All of this has been explained to Mr. Kent multiple times both in writing and via the phone. PSF is intrigued that a lawyer (Mr. Kent) will continue to demand to speak to Board members and demand that PSF hand over documents, when he is fully aware our legal representation has said not to, and how a person that is not a lawyer (to the best of our knowledge), Jason Parsley, has the audacity to question a lawyer in this quote from an email he sent to a local attorney, ‘…Marc Hansen is telling people that his legal counsel told him not to release anything to the media. I assume you’re the legal counsel, so please confirm this. And if this is true, why did you give them that advice?’” The Florida Agenda will keep the community posted on the developments of PSF.

If you, your business, or any organization you’re involved in, has been negatively impacted by any misrepresentations by Norm Kent or SFGN, please contact The Florida Agenda. We are on your side as a media outlet in both print and online, to protect the integrity of LGBT reporting to the world. Contact us at editor@floridaagenda.com

both past and present,” said Hansen. “Even after sending emails to explain that no one other than the Co-Chairs could speak on the subjects, they forged on. Specifically aiming their inquiries towards individual(s) they had personal friendships or legal business relationships with that would be more easily convinced to circumvent the by-laws of the organization to obtain information that they had been told would not be released yet. PSF learned that Kent was able to get one board member (who admitted to this) to send out everything and anything he had that Kent wanted, totally ignoring PSF By Laws & SOP (Standards of Practice).”

Brian Neal Fitness Foundation Gears Up for Growth

Oversight Committee to Be Announced

Unshaken by what may be considered two malicious articles in Norm Kent’s newspaper, South Florida Gay News, The Brian Neal Fitness & Health Foundation (BNFHF) continues steadfast in its mission to provide health and wellness services to underprivileged individuals living with HIV. Among several new programs announced this week are a beginner’s weight training program being offered at Steel Gym and a specialized seven-week program for individuals with HIV-related lipodystrophy (the redistribution of fat in the body) offered by HIV fitness expert Peter Jackson at Push Fitness. “We are excited to add these programs and are grateful to our partners,” said Brian Neal, executive director of BNFHF. Neal also revealed organizational improvements to the foundation. “Our accounting and business practices will be overseen by a soon-to-be-appointed advisory and oversight board of community leaders and all our accounting, as has been the case, will continue to be published for public review.” Added Bobby Blair, co-founder of BNFHF, “We recognize, due to the ownership by Brian and me of a media enterprise, that we will be under even closer scrutiny than most. To ensure continued transparency, integrity and honesty, a third party team will provide

oversight to the foundation so there will be complete confidence that our organization’s mission is being fulfilled.” For more information on programs being offered by the foundation, visit www.briannealfitness.org.

Julian Marsh and Trajan Povov are reportedly the first same-sex married couple to get a green card approval from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The couple met two years ago at a party and were married in New York State in October of 2012. Soon after that, Marsh, a resident of Fort Lauderdale, applied for a permanent resident visa for Povov, who is from Bulgaria. The decision of the U.S. Supreme Court last week struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, giving same-sex married couples the same federal benefits as straight couples. Marsh and Povov were guided through their legal hurdles by the DOMA Project, an organization that helps binational same-sex couples to fight against deportations.

COMMENTARY

SHAME ON YOU, MR. KENT

I

n this world, there are noble individuals who give freely of their time, talents and personal resources to the overall betterment of society. Then there are those who begrudge the good others do, serving their own selfish goals as they bully their way through life, contributing little, if anything, to society. Norm Kent, publisher of the South Florida Gay News, falls into this latter category. Mr. Kent’s goal is clear and incontrovertible. In his own words (SFGN, May 8, 2013), he wants his newspaper “to be the ONLY media resource South Florida needs.” To achieve this monopoly and anoint himself the king of LGBT media in South Florida, it appears Mr. Kent will take whatever steps are necessary to discredit the integrity of competitors and malign the characters of those who stand in his way. His latest crusade to destroy the work of the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation (BNFHF), a fledgling non-profit which aims to provide wellness services to the underprivileged living with HIV, is a perfect example. You see, the BNFHF was founded by Bobby Blair, publisher of the Florida Agenda and Guy Magazine, and his life partner, Brian Neal, a fitness coach. When Mr. Kent began digging for dirt on the Foundation as a way to discredit the couple, Blair walked into his office with his characteristic “nothing to hide” attitude and, in good faith, laid down all the foundation’s bank statements and financial records. Apparently bitterly disappointed that he could not find a shred of evidence of outrageous salaries being paid or misappropriated funds, Mr. Kent zeroed in on the fact that Brian Neal paid himself by withdrawing cash at ATMs rather than writing himself checks. The grand sum: $3,546.96 salary for 27 months’ hard work as the head of a non-profit! That’s a little over $125 per month in compensation. To add to the sensationalism of the story, Mr. Kent found it necessary to reveal in his story the “dirty” detail that the foundation’s namesake visited gay strip joints owned by contributors to,

and supporters of, his foundation and, gasp!, that Neal was involved in a DUI last year. Shame on you, Mr. Kent. Despite the fact that Blair gave Mr. Kent proof that Felix DeBruin, former executive director of BNFHF was terminated, the South Florida Gay News publisher persisted in publishing a headline that read: “Executive Director DeBruin leaves amidst turmoil.” What turmoil? The fact is the foundation has added programs, expanded its services and is set to help a record number

of needy individuals in the second half of 2013. Kent had the facts but chose to ignore them in favor of an inaccurate and irresponsible headline that it seems he hoped would be more damaging. Shame on you, Mr. Kent. Not satisfied with his first sensational story on June 19th, Mr. Kent returned the following week with another apparently malice-driven article that did little more than re-hash the same old material. In this attempt to mislead the public and cast a shadow on the validity of the BNFHF, Mr. Kent points out that $40,000 was raised in community funds

but only $11,000 was used for purchasing gym memberships – implying that $29,000 had vanished. What he deliberately failed to reveal is that every penny was accounted for! The financials in his possession clearly show the other monies were paid to other gym locations, service providers, infrastructure, rent for space at the Pride Center, an online nutrition tracking program and hard copy workbooks for participants – to name a few of the expenses covered by a shoe-string budget. Again, Mr. Kent had all the financials and all the facts at his fingertips but chose to ignore them. Shame on you, Mr. Kent. In this second article, the SFGN publisher again found it necessary to underscore Brian Neal’s DUI last year. We are left to wonder why Mr. Kent is shining a spotlight on this misstep by a young man who has given so much of himself to our community, bearing in mind that as an attorney Mr. Kent has made a living defending drug abusers, prostitutes and DUI offenders and minimizing the actions of his clients in courts of law. Indeed, a vocal advocate of marijuana use, Mr. Kent serves as the president of NORML, a lobbying organization for the legalization of marijuana and stopping the arrests of pot smokers. See the hypocrisy? The home of Bobby Blair and Brian Neal has never been raided by police for illegal drugs. Mr. Kent can’t say the same thing. All this, of course, is coming from a man, an attorney, who in 2002 had his law license suspended and was put on probation by the Florida Bar after he plead guilty to serious charges of financial impropriety in connection with his handling of a client’s trust account. Disgraceful and unethical behavior. Shame on you, Mr. Kent. Now, Mr. Kent is terribly concerned about the funds raised by hard work for a great cause. Mind you, not one dollar of those funds was donated by him. In fact,

despite his gloating in just about every editorial about the success of his publications, and the sale of his previous newspaper a few years back for a handsome sum in the high six figures, we are left to wonder what Mr. Kent has done lately for the LGBT community on which he has built his financially successful bullying empire. Whereas we at the Florida Agenda prefer to highlight the good and positive work of people in our community, Mr. Kent, historically, seems to take a special delight in tearing down people and community organizations, conveniently ignoring the facts when they don’t service his interests. Whereas Publisher Bobby Blair has repeatedly expressed concern about the survival of small LGBT businesses in our community, especially on Wilton Drive, and has bent over backwards to help promote them, Mr. Kent reportedly bullies businesses into advertising only with his newspaper and has jacked up advertising rates to make them the most expensive in town. Shame on you, Mr. Kent. On that note, since high and mighty Mr. Kent is so good at demanding financials and other documentation from local non-profits and community groups, we’d like him to produce some of his own. He is charging local businesses what many consider exorbitant advertising rates for his “nationally-distributed” magazine, The Mirror. Mr. Kent, we challenge you to produce print bills and shipping records showing exactly how many copies of your “national” magazine are distributed outside of metro Fort Lauderdale. At a time when there is so much to celebrate as gay Americans, when the LGBT media has such an onerous responsibility to further the cause of our equality, when so many of the achievements and victories of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people are going widely unreported, it is a crying shame and disgrace that an apparently bitter, meanspirited individual with the power of the press would rather cast aspersions and malign the character of good people. Shame, shame, shame on you, Mr. Kent.

TIM EVANS/GIBSON LEON TRUST SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT FOR THEIR SUPPORT TO THE BRIAN NEAL FITNESS AND HEALTH FOUNDATION

RESPONSE

B

rian Neal Foundation donor Gibson Leon Trust, managed by Tim Evans, was startled and concerned about the SFGN article written on June 19, 2013 regarding the Foundation. Last week in the SFGN article regarding Tim Evans and the Gibson leon Trust, after a phone conversation with Brian Neal, Mr. Evans has the following to restate about the Brian Neal Fitness Foundation:

July 3, 2013 H 11

“Norm Kent was basically telling me that there were several others who were calling him and that he just wanted to see what checks I had donated to Brian and Bobby as he said some things to me that he said he couldn’t print due to not having proof or evidence. I would like to retract in the heat of anger the statement I made about fraud – I would also like to add that after reading the story from SFGN, it made us feel as if there was something wrong and as a trustee, I had to act on what could have been compromising the trust in way of donations. I also retract our desire to call for a full accounting and refund request from the Neal foundation at this time. As I was reassured by a call from Brian Neal on Thursday June 27, 2013 that satisfied our position as donors for the foundation, Brian apologized for excluding us, and explained the mix-ups and we are completely satisfied: They were just minor mistakes that were blown out if proportion by SFGN. We will continue to support the Brian Neal Foundation for all it does and all they help respectively. I also wish to add that if my story quotes in SFGN were misconstrued, it was due to the facts that were in the SFGN story.” “I am so happy that I was able to speak to Tim Evans and personally apologize to him for forgetting to mention the Gibson Leon Trust in the recent Florida Agenda article that recognized and thanked our sponsors and donors,” said Brian Neal in a statement. “The incredible support that Tim and Gibby have so generously provided has made a big difference in helping people in our community, living with HIV and having access to health and wellness services. I am very happy that the Gibson Leon Trust has decided to continue to support the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation.”

rishan Manners is working hard to make Wilton Manors a better city for all. For the past three years, he’s been aiding in the city’s development, “sustaining small town charm” and “creating urban sophistication.” The proof is in the pudding: He’s creating a landscape for new business owners to get into their businesses faster than every before. Born in New Dehli, raised in New York, and schooled in South Carolina, it’s fair to say that Manners is well-traveled. Though he’s only been here for three years, Manners has already made a huge impact on the community. His non-profit organization, Wilton Manors Development Alliance, offers a free service to anyone that is interested in opening a small business in the area. He works with businesses on press releases, media contact, grand openings and more. Their main goal is to get more “mom and pop” businesses up and running in a timely fashion. In addition to businesses, WMDA is trying to tackle some important issues of The Drive itself. He’s working toward a better, bigger Wilton: scaling down the drive to a two-lane road, widening sidewalks, safer crosswalks, parking garages, hotels and more. The next big thing on the organization’s plate? Revamping Dixie Highway.

“Dixie Highway is really set to boom over the next few years. We have an advance coming in in I believe 2015 for sidewalks and streetscape improvement. There’s the potential of the train station going there for the FEC Line which I think would be phenomenal. I think the

real estate there is going to improve considerably. Dixie is prime to boom.” We can thank Krishan Manners for understanding the city, developing relationships and making our city the best it can be.

Independence Day

Lady Bunny Live

Caspa the Friendly Ghost

The Fourth of July is a day for all Americans to celebrate our independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain that just so happened to fall on July 4, 1776. In South Florida, “official” firework displays and celebrations take place on virtually every cities beach, held by the city itself. Fort Lauderdale Beach, Miami Beach, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, and West Palm Beach all host waterfront celebrations. As the events are family-friendly, they usually wrap up around 9 or 9:30, leaving you with ample time to take a cab to the drive to celebrate your independence in a way that we as Americans are more accustomed to: bar-hopping. Beginning at sunset in various cities in the tri-county area. Check your city’s official site for more details.

Drag personality Lady Bunny is more than just a pretty face. The comedian, singer/songwriter, DJ, MC and actress has a diverse resume, but perhaps her biggest feat was creating Wigstock – a festival of drag and music taking place on Labor Day in New York for nearly 20 years. Lady Bunny’s official site says it best: “With her glitzy outfits, sky-high wigs, and false eyelashes long enough to embarrass even Tammy Faye Bakker, multi-talented drag artiste Lady Bunny would turn heads even if looking glamorous was her only talent. But this isn’t just another man in a dress.” Amen. See her perform live exclusively at Village Pub. 10 p.m. Village Pub. 2283 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

If you’re into dubstep, you most likely know who Caspa is. If you don’t, you should. The hugely successful dubstep producer’s new track “War” was featured in a trailer for Kick-Ass 2, echoing a Prodigy-esque vibe. The London-born producer’s career was actually somewhat of a fluke, following a failed basketball career due to a shoulder injury. If you’re looking for a “wub-wub” kind of Independence Day, Caspa’s got you covered. 10 p.m. Grand Central. 697 N Miami Ave, Miami, 33136.

The Canadian dubstep producer is known for his insane live shows, but this year he’s literally turned up the dial. His 2013 video stage, titled “Executioner,” is just as it sounds, pairing aggressively mechanical theatrics with a 100,000 watt bass system. 100,000 watts. Patrons are strongly advised to wear ear plugs as this show is the definition of loud. Sharon Needles is really the queen of drag. Her recent album release, “PG-13,” is a collection of horror and Halloween-inspired dance tracks, featuring collaborations with Amanda Lepore, Alaska and Ru Paul herself. When we spoke to Sharon about her upcoming performance and what people can expect, she said, “People are going to see Sharon Needles... basically embarrassing the shit out of herself. The first organ to feel the wrath of the alcohol overload is the all-important liver. The liver breaks down foods and beverages and turns them into useable forms of energy. When that useable form of energy is only coming from alcohol, many unhealthy byproducts are produced and circulated throughout the body, only to then be refiltered and damage the liver a second time. Cirrhosis of the liver is the end result. Having far too many drinks on a constant basis can produce cancers of the mouth, throat and larynx. Additionally, alcohol abuse has also been linked as the primary cause of cancer in every living organ in the human body. Obesity is another dangerous side effect of over-consuming alcohol. Obesity can affect all aspects of your health and combining it with the deleterious effects of over-consumption makes you are a heart attack waiting to happen. Malnutrition is another common side effect of drinking alcohol too often. A suppressed appetite from heavy drinking translates into either a very poor diet, or consuming no food at all. Diminishing the body of vital nutrients inhibits its ability to eliminate alcohol’s toxic by-products, thus weakening the body as a whole and leaving increased chance for disease to set in. All of these conditions are brought on by your need to over-consume. You are the one who makes the decision to drink too much, or to drink in moderation. You! Take responsibility now and start consuming foods and drinks in moderation. It will support your all-over wellness, and make you the very best you can be at any age. To your health. onsuming alcohol is one of America’s favorite leisure time activities. Having a drink or two with friends to spice up the day or evening out is common place in most of our lives. But, having a drink or two usually does not stop there for most. It is more like three, four or five. This over-consumption of alcohol with friends is all well and fine—occasionally--but repeated days and nights in a row of excess drinking can really wreak havoc on your health. Yet, despite the known risks, weekend after weekend we see the same faces out at the bars or local clubs getting sloshed time and again. Every drinker has his or her limit, and the warning “Drink in Moderation” isn’t just some puritan ethic. It’s essential a life or death matter. If you drink alcohol on a daily basis, health care professionals recommend no more than one alcoholic beverage a day for woman, and two alcoholic beverages a day for a man. Keeping your alcoholic consumption within these boundaries will enable you to stay within guidelines for optimal health. Taking control over your alcohol consumption not only shows others how strong you are, but how smart and healthy you are as well. Beer and alcohol have been around since about 4000 B.C., and its effects and health benefits have been around since that time as well. These two beverages have some great health benefits, such as lowering the risk of heart disease by thinning out the blood and keeping plaque from forming on the arteries. Other health benefits have included enhanced brain function. That’s right, alcohol can help make you smarter, but only if drank in moderation. Alcohol is great for relieving anxiety, especially since it lowers inhibitions. Lowering inhibitions is where alcohol got its nickname, “liquid courage.” But no matter what you may call your drink, cheers to drinking to your good health. On the other hand, over-consumption is a slow march to certain death.

SIMPLE CREAM OF ASPARAGUS SOUP

T

here is a recipe for cooking asparagus in the oldest surviving book of recipes. It was cultivated by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, who ate it fresh when in season and dried it for use in winter.... Asparagus is low in calories and is very low in sodium. It is also a good source of vitamin B6, calcium, magnesium and zinc, and a very good source of dietary fiber…. So what I’m sayin’ is, VERY HEALTHY! • 1 onion chopped • A dash of extra virgin olive oil • 2 lbs of peeled and washed asparagus tips, • 1 big potato cut in cubes • A sprig of fresh rosemary • A good splash of fresh cream, • Salt, pepper & paprika.

July 3, 2013 H 22

RECIPE

In a good sized saucepan lightly brown the onions at a medium heat. Add the asparagus, the potato, the rosemary and 2 to 3 pints of water and boil for about 20 minutes. Fish out the rosemary sprig and discard. Blend well in a food processer or directly in the pot with an immersion mixer. You are the chef, so you taste and season with salt, pepper and a pinch of paprika and of course the fresh cream.

dog accoutrements plus some added extras including sauerkraut, catsup, coleslaw, or chili, cheese, and giardiniera. Want to go whole hog: try the Maxwell Street Polish ($5.79), a Polish sausage that is deep fried and served with mustard, grilled onions and sports peppers on the traditional poppy seed bun. The “pop” when you take the first bite is a bit of heaven, while the famed Vienna Beef spices and smoked flavor shine through. If you like your sausage on the hotter side, order the Italian Sausage, Peppers, and Onions ($6.99), which makes for a spicy alternative that’s got a bit more bite for the taste buds. Since this is the Dawg House, recommending a menu item that isn’t a frankfurter is almost sacrilegious. Yet…. there’s something to be said for the Philly Cheese Steak ($6.99; $9.99 combo) that’s served here. The real treat is in the thinly sliced beef, again authentic Chicago-style Vienna Roast Beef, which we suppose makes it more a Chicagy Cheese Steak than its Philly namesake, but you get the picture. It’s a massive sandwich that is meant for savoring, but there’s little chance of that. One smell of the grilled onions on ours, and that baby was history. The Dawg House also serves an interesting Grilled Chicken Sandwich ($5.99; $8.99 combo). It’s your basic skinless chicken breast on a Kaiser roll with lettuce and tomato, though we saw one aficionado order it with chili aboard. There’s no explaining taste in Pompano Beach. If you’ve still got a smidgeon of room in the tummy, top off your meal with the highly recommended Wunderbar ($3.49). This is a frozen wedge of cheesecake that’s coated in chocolate and served on a stick. It’s okay to lick lips and your fingers. Just tell ‘em Florida Agenda said so.

BY RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN n case you’ve been living under a rock—or perhaps posing for the bulbs in Wilton Manors—the Chicago Dog is world famous. It’s not a dog as in canine, but rather as in an all-beef frankfurter, typically Kosher and made by Vienna Beef Ltd. That’s the company started in 1893, that still uses their original frankfurter recipe. (Vienna Beef also has a gay CEO, btw.) The Vienna Beef dawg is simmered to perfection and placed in a warm poppy seed roll, and topped by yellow mustard, neon green relish, chopped onions, tomato slices, and pickled sports peppers with a dash of celery salt. And it is this classic Chicago-Style Dawg ($3.49) that is king at Dawg House. Using all the traditional ingredients, the resulting hot dog is an astounding success if you are looking for authenticity. For those who like their hot dogs grilled and with catsup, “fagetit”—as they’d say on Chicago’s South Side. This is a Chicago Dog, a Red Hot, a dragged through the garden weiner. The price point is reasonable as well with $6.49 gaining you a combo (fries and a drink) with a jumbo frank costing you an additional $1.00 on any of its hot dog offerings. On the Chili Dawg ($3.49), gone are the veggies replaced instead with direct-from-Chicago chili, a just-spicyenough concoction that’s made from Vienna Beef as well, and can be ordered a la carte as a side-dish bowl for $3.99. While the chili version served on the dawgs has no beans, there’s a red bean version available by the bowl that smelled addicting. For those that like their beef fake, the Jumbo Vegetarian Dawg ($4.29) does a reasonably good impression of the original, fixed your way. Translation: the chef will add any of the standard Chicago

Q&A

MYSTERY SOLVED An Interview with Singer/Songwriter Spencer Day BY GREGG SHAPIRO

S

pencer Day, who came out as gay a few years ago, is that rare combination of crooning singer/songwriter. On his new disc “The Mystery of You” (Concord), Day has crafted a powerful and accessible song cycle about love and loss. Cooly crooned tunes such as the title cut, “Soul On Fire” and “Shadow Man” wouldn’t sound out of place on the “Mad Men” soundtrack. But Day’s sensitive singer/songwriter side dawns brightly on “Love And War,” “I Don’t Want To Know” and “I’m Going Home.” I spoke with Day around the time of the release of the album.

Spencer Day: What that meant for me and my discovery, which is something I kind of already knew, is that change is not easy and personal growth can be very painful. Also absolutely necessary. I think when I was younger I had perfected the art of running from things. I think a lot of humans do that. You either find someone new to date, you find a new drug, you find a religion [laughs]. All of those things can be fine if used in the proper way. I think I had mastered the art of escapism without realizing it. What happened after this breakup, for me, is that in the past three years all of my old vices weren’t working anymore. I have a lot of friends who said, you have to go date someone new. My psyche was like, “no, you’ve got to face some of the less pleasant parts of yourself [laughs] and actually work on them.” I was deeply depressed after this breakup, I was diagnosed bipolar and I had a complete nervous breakdown [laughs]. The reason I’m laughing about it now is that while it was so awful it really was one of the best things that ever happened to me. It really snapped me to attention about how far off I was from truly loving myself. In a way, it inspired me and made me realize the potential of how much better things could get for me.

July 3, 2013 H 24

Has the subject of the songs on The Mystery of You heard the songs, and if so, what did he think of them? I don’t think so. I would hope that he would take it to be the compliment and love letter to that time and place that I intended for it to be. I certainly didn’t want it to be, “you’re a horrible person for breaking my heart” and pull a Taylor Swift [laughs] and drag someone else’s personal life through the mud.

REISIG TAYLOR

Gregg Shapiro: In the liner notes for your new CD The Mystery of You (Concord), you wrote that the past few years “have been a profound, strange, challenging and wonderful time.”

One Taylor Swift is plenty. You play keyboards on more than half a dozen songs on the disc. Is that how you write your songs, on keyboards? Traditionally I’ve written everything at the piano and always come up with the melody first. This is the first time I started writing a few things on guitar. One of the reasons I want to do that was because I’m not a very good guitar player and sometimes your limitations can be really good, they can force you to be creative and employ techniques and melodies and rhythms that you wouldn’t have otherwise done. You can’t really strum a piano. It was also the first time I was very involved in the arrangements of the songs. I got better during this time using Logic and ProTools, too. Some of the songs were built by putting the beat first and building from the ground up, starting with the groove, which

for me was unusual. Lately I’ve been doing that more. It changes the way things are phrased, what the melodic and rhythmic components of the song are. The songs on the disc have what sounds to me like a mid-1960s influence. I appreciate that you can hear that kind of influence. A lot of the music that I’ve been in love with, whether it’s the Ennio Morricone spaghetti-western music for the Roy Orbison tracks I was really into at the time, are very guitar-driven. The instrumentation that conjures up that time period, such as the baritone surf guitar, helps to tell someone that this music is reminiscent of this time and place. More so than piano, the guitar is the key to that for this record.

I recently interviewed singer Erin Boheme and we talked about the duet you did with her on her latest CD. On your CD, you perform duets with Gaby Moreno on the songs “Love and War” and “I Don’t Want To Know.” What do you find appealing about duets? I’ve realized that I’m not a person who needs to have the spotlight on me consistently. Personally, I prefer interacting and collaborating with other people; even if it’s just the musicians and playing with. I really like not feeling like I’m an island. One of the great things about doing a duet is that it snaps you into the moment. You have to be taking in this other person. If it’s a good duet

Do you think you have an album’s worth of EDM or country music tunes in you as well? Yes to both of those. I’ve had the good fortune of being able to write on Music Row in Nashville in the last year. Some will hopefully be cut by other artists. That’s why I like the term singer/songwriter better than crooner because I feel like with singer/songwriter it’s very open. Joni Mitchell can do a folk thing, then a jazz thing. With crooner, it’s so specific to what the connotation that people have with that term. It can kind of limit you. I’m such a fan of Zero 7, Air and Danger Mouse. As a collaboration, I’d love to stretch myself and try out a completely different style that really takes me out of my comfort zone, but still feels authentic. At this moment in time, why the hell not [laughs]? How would you say that being gay comes into play in your music, if at all?

If you have the good fortune of being a gay role model, I think that’s great. But I would really rather be someone who is thought of as living my life in an authentic and transparent way. That’s what I feel is important. I feel like my art is better if I’m true and honest to myself. That’s a personal choice for everyone to make. It’s hard to acknowledge that in a lot of ways my career would probably be doing “better” if I had not come out when I did. There are still a lot of people for whom if you sing in a sexy or romantic way, they still want to envision themselves in a certain setting with you, I guess. I still get a lot of hate mail from people saying “I loved that song until I realized you were singing it to a guy.” That’s sad to me. Unless I have something specific to say in a song, I want it to be like an abstract painting where a listener can find themselves in it whatever way makes sense for the listener. I do feel I have a responsibility to take the punch line out of it. I think it’s a profound act of activism in a way to sing a song unapologetically and beautifully without a sense of irony. [Sings] “Someday he’ll come along/the man I love.” That’s one of the most beautiful standards ever, but I’m not going to change it to the “gal” I love. I wouldn’t one do that if I was straight [laughs], because it just sounds stupid. Jeff Buckley, who was straight, covered “The Man Got Away” and just sang it as it was, because to him that made the most sense. When I think about singing such things, it really inspires me because it feels like I’m here for a purpose. I can be a part of bringing people together in unlikely ways.

floridaagenda.com

I didn’t really look to any other song cycles, although I know that there certainly have been other ones done on the subject. I just wanted to document each stage of this relationship. I wanted it to be more of a discovery of what love means, what losing yourself means and what reclaiming yourself after the love has died away means. It was more of a journey into my own psyche to understand what my relationship is to intimacy and love and loss. As opposed to just a series of songs about someone who broke my heart.

partner what they do is help you get into the moment and the story. In some ways you get to act a character that you previously hadn’t thought of. It’s very much an acting piece all of a sudden. You’re creating a scene and they bring in a new context. Gaby and Erin are such beautiful singers. The Mormon choir kid in me still can’t get enough of harmonizing with people [laughs]. I want to do it to every song on the radio, turn it into a hymn.

t wasn’t too long ago, when any mention of Belfast was always preceded by the adjective “war-torn.” The capital of Northern Ireland was the center of a intense and violent struggle between the Catholic and Protestant populations in the region between 1969 and 1998, locally known as “The Troubles.” Since the halting of this campaign of domestic terrorism, however, the city has rediscovered its balance, prospered with a planned orchestration of redevelopment, and emerged to be Ireland’s art and cultural center. Not a small amount of the effort has been at the hands of the LGBT community, which has established the largest population of gays and lesbians on the island. This coming weekend, the LGBT community is proudly on display as friends and family gather to support the local Belfast Pride Festival, now in its 23rd year. The height of the celebration happens on Saturday, July 6, with nearly 20,000 expected to attend. Travelling to Belfast International Airport from Fort Lauderdale is easily accomplished via United Airlines, which for $1500 plus change will fly you to Newark, NJ where a non-stop on United will take you to Blarney. Depending on your connection, the entire flight takes between 15 and 20 hours..

Once in Belfast, we highly recommend staying at either the Dukes at Queens (65-67 University St) or the Merchant Hotel (16 Skipper St). The attraction of the Dukes is the size. This is a boutique hotel that’s a short walk to Queens University and the Botanical Gardens with impeccable rooms, a lovely restaurant and cocktail lounge, and a helpful staff that does its utmost to make you feel like family. The Merchant Hotel, on the other hand, is stunning in its architecture and commanding in its elegance. Housed inside a former bank building, the Merchant is located in the historic Cathedral quarter, a short distance from a host of visitor attractions including Victoria Square Shopping Centre, the Ulster Museum, City Hall, the Titanic

Quarter, the Waterfront Hall and the Odyssey Arena. In addition to the Merchant Hotel, the Cathedral quarter (named for its centerpiece St. Anne’s Cathedral on Donegall St) is the heart of the gay neighborhood. You’ll quickly see that this is an area in transition, with many empty stores and warehouse—exactly the type of space that gays love to gentrify and turn into the trendiest part of town. The hottest gay dance club in town continues to be the Kremlin (96 Donegall St). Now in its 14th year, the place has its act together, except at the front door, where overzealous bouncers make a habit of intimidating the meek. Just perform like the stars you are, and you should have no problem. Smile and enter, and unless you feel a big hand on

your shoulder, keep moving. The Kremlin is connected to another favorite gay club called the Union Street (8-14 Union St), which Sunday bingo is all the rage. Buy a drink at Union Street and get half off the cover charge at Kremlin. Such a deal. The Mynt (2-16 Dunbar St) refers to itself as Belfast’s premiere polysexual club. Apparently, if you make up a word, you own the scene. It is a fun night out, when a quieter time is what you’re looking for. Mynt has a reputation for elegance. Sometimes that’s enough. For gentlemen of a certain age, there’s Fox’s Den (110 Donegal St) located on the second floor. While the clientele are seasoned, the bartenders here are some of the hottest in town. Do not write this club off. It’s new and climbing.
