SUNSHINE STATE Former NBA Star to Sign Florida Equal Marriage Petition Miami, FL – Tim Hardaway has had a rocky past with the gay community. The former Miami Heat player lead the team to many victories and was an MVP candidate following the 1996 season, but off the court, Hardaway had a more negative attitude. During a 2007 radio show segment in Miami, Hardaway made a homophobic comment. When the radio show host asked Hardaway if he meant for his remark to come off as homophobic, Hardaway said, “Well, you know I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don’t like gay people and I don’t like to be around gay people. I am homophobic.” The shocking statement went viral and before the day was over, he was apologizing publicly for making the remarks (but not for the content of the remarks themselves). Later in 2007, Hardaway said “...I’m going to do whatever I can to correct it. That’s all I can do.” In 2011, he told a Sirius radio station that he was working on The Trevor Project and educating himself on LGBT issues. Now, in 2013, Hardaway was the first (symbolic) signer of a petition to get an equal marriage constitutional amendment on Florida’s ballot. Hardaway told NBC Miami, “If you’re married you’re married – you should see your significant other in the

hospital, make choices for your significant other if you need to make those choices.” When speaking of her support for Hardaway, Equal Marriage Florida chairperson, Vanessa Brito, told NBC Miami, “I’ve gotten a lot of heat. And criticism from the gay community – even from the mainstream community.” Brito went on to tell NBC that she was moved by Hardaway’s story not because of his tolerance, but by his owning up to his mistake and becoming an allied voice for the LGBT community.

Equality Florida Reached Goal for 2013 Equal-A-Thon Tallahassee, FL – Equal-a-thon is Equality Florida’s fundraiser for just about everything that a member of the LGBT community needs: marriage equality, nondiscrimination and anti-bullying policies, and domestic partner registries throughout the state. According to the site’s blog, a record number of people participated in Equal-a-thon, breaking the fundraiser goal of $251,000 in gifts and pledges. “We asked you to Get Engaged and you responded...A huge thank you to everyone who took part.” If you’re still itching to give to the cause, donations are still being accepted for Equal-a-thon. If you give $35 or more, you’ll receive a shirt to show your support proudly. The T-shirt boldly states: “I’m Engaged In Florida’s Fight For Marriage Equality.”

SIDELINES SPORTS BAR TO CLOSE FOR FACE LIFT

idelines Sports Bar will close briefly in early August for renovations to the interior of the bar and outside patio areas. The bar on Wilton Drive is planning on reopening in time for the NCAA and NFL Football season kickoff games. The NCAA regular season begins on August 29; the NFL regular season starts September 5. Sidelines had previously announced plans to move to a new location on East Oakland Park Boulevard, but those plans were scraped last week when Sidelines co-owner and sole liquor license holder Laurie Whittaker discovered that past renovations done at the new site were performed without permits and not up to code standards. Additionally, Whittaker alleges that parking spaces included in her new lease were not owned by her new landlord. According to a press release issued by the bar’s marketing company but not made available to the Agenda for publication, Whittaker also claims that she has suffered losses of “thousands of dollars due to delays, setbacks, and misrepresentation by the building’s owner,” Joseph Corteo. Calls by the Agenda to CorLaurie Whittaker and teo for comment were Jennifer Morales of Sidelines unreturned.

Former China White Space Rebrands Itself: Opening August 2013

New York, NY – Lady Gaga’s performance of the National Anthem at Gay Pride NYC will go down as a historical moment for the singer, who changed the last verse of the song from “home of the brave,” to “home of the gay.” Former Rep. Allen west (R-Fla.) lashed out at Gaga, saying she her “defiling” of the song was “reprehensible.” West took to his Facebook to express his disdain for Gaga’s anthem: “I find Lady Gaga’s defiling of our National Anthem reprehensible. We are the land of the free because America has always been the home of the brave from Lexington and Concord to Kandahar. This young lady should be taken to Ft. McHenry and given a history lesson...She and all of those who cheered her abomination should be ashamed and apologize to every serving and retired members of our Armed Services. But perhaps I ask too much.”

Fort Lauderdale, FL – The space formerly known as China White (currently Green Room), is completely rebranding itself. China White’s gay night was one of Fort Lauderdale’s leading nights within the community of movers and shakers, and Green Room is hoping to recapture that feeling of nostalgia with their new brand: Stache. The lounge is being transformed into a 1920s-inspired Speakeasy, with a crossover music format, blending Classic Rock, Funk, Soul, R&B, Indie, Electronic and House music. While the swanky new space has yet to announce any of its official nights, a gay night is rumored to make an appearance in the near future. Opening on a “to-be-announced” date in August, the bar promises to keep everyone updated through it’s official Facebook as they approach the grand opening.

ussian President Vladimir Putin signed off on a bill last week that makes it illegal for same-sex couples from foreign countries to adopt Russian children. Why? According to The Huffington Post, it’s “aimed at guaranteeing a harmonious and full upbringing for children in adoptive families.” Harmonious and full upbringing. That’s so strange...I was raised by two heterosexual, loving parents, and I consider myself to be a homosexual male. My parents’ “harmonious and full upbringing” didn’t stop me from becoming a gay, independent male. Weird. While the Russian government has already barred Americans from adopting Russian children, this new law will still prohibit roughly 600,000 Russian children from entering a family with same-sex parents. That’s a hell of a lot of children without any upbringing let alone a “harmonious and full” one. The fact that somebody has the authority to put a ban like this in effect is seriously alarming. The Russian Federation should consider an alternative title, like

“I think [the ban] will lead to an increase in corruption in the [adoption] process, but many foreigners, including homosexuals, will still be able to adopt Russian children in the future.”

“Dictator” or “Tyrant.” While I do realize that bills are voted on just like they are in America, I can’t help but feel that there’s peer-pressure going on. After all, he announced in March that he would approve the legislature after it was voted on by the country’s parliament. How can you say you’ll do something that hasn’t been decided yet? This past weekend, Tilda Swinton released an image online in defense of Russia’s LGBT community. Holding a billowing Rainbow flag in front of Moscow’s Kremlin, Swinton told her spokesperson to pair it with the title: “In solidarity. From Russia with love.” While you or I may not comprehend how bold Swinton’s actions were, a Huffington Post blogger put it into perspective when retweeting the photo: “Tourists attempting what Tilda Swinton did in Russia are subject to 15 days detention in jail.” The photo is sad: Swinton simultaneously looks both brave and on the brink of bursting into tears. A police car is seen behind her, yet

Swinton is seen bravely clutching the flag with both hands. While the image should bring me joy or a sense of empowerment, I can’t help but feel sorrow for every gay child who must protect their sexual identity from the government, and every gay adult who cannot adopt. There is hope from LGBT activists in Russia. Nikolai Alexeyev said, “I think [the ban] will lead to an increase in corruption in the [adoption] process, but many foreigners, including homosexuals, will still be able to adopt Russian children in the future.” A former KGB officer, Putin has been an extremely influential “politician” in Russia for a full decade now. Acting as the president of Russia from 2000 to 2008, and prime minister from 2009 to 2012, Putin was elected to a third presidential term in 2012. He will serve an additional six years due to changes made to Russian Law. Reuters reports that Putin claims there is no discrimation against gays, but his stances say otherwise.

f anyone has a right to sing the blues, it’s queer blues belter Candye Kane. A pancreatic cancer survivor, Kane has traveled a bumpy road personally and professionally, but is, as her 2000 disc declared, “The Toughest Girl In the World.” That spirit shines through on her latest disc, “Coming Out Swinging” (Vizztone). Teaming up once again with young guitar wonder Laura Chavez, Kane wails and works her way through a set of 13 tracks, nine of which are original compositions. Knockouts include the anthemic “Rise Up!,” the intoxicating “I’m The Reason Why You Drink” and “Au Revoir Y’All” (sung mostly en Francais!), as well as Kane’s swinging interpretation of “Marijuana Boogie.” Women’s music legend Tret Fure is now in her fifth decade as a recording artist. At her most prolific in the 21st century, Fure has released half a dozen discs since 2001, the latest being “A Piece of The Sky” (Tomboy Girl). She uncovers the mysteries of our bodies, souls and hearts on the title cut and makes an unexpected (and lovely) reference to “Somewhere Over Rainbow” in “Bluebird,” a song about giving love another chance. “The Zen of Being” brings a whole new perspective to calendars and the march of time. “Bucket of Tears” is the tearjerker its title implies. The bouncy “The Artist Way” is the kind of personal career statement that only Fure could make and “My Best” is the result of speculation one can make having lived a full and creative life. To close the disc, Fure digs into her personal record crates with “That Side of the Moon,” a song that originally appeared on her 1984 album, Terminal Hold.

Yetnikoff’s Velvel (“Beneath The Devil Moon”) and Amy Ray’s Daemon. “Day 2,” released on her own SBS (Strange Bird Songs) label, co-produced by fellow Georgia native Shawn Mullins (of “Lullaby” fame) and Gerry Hansen, finds Malone going deeper into her Southern roots. On “Other Girls,” Malone conjures Lucinda Williams at her most raucous. She proudly displays her political side on “Immigration Game” and then gets personal on the smoldering “Marlboro Man” and the heavenly “St. Peter.” “The Auditor” and “Wasted On You” are proof that Malone has maintained her sense of humor after all these years. Made in L.A., and produced by Dave Sitek (of TV on the Radio), “Planta” (SQE Music) is the newest album by queer, all-female, Brazilian dance outfit CSS. It won’t take long to grow on listeners. The sticky “Honey” gets things off to a sweet(heart) start. “Hangover” is drunk on hip-hop and the radiant “Into The Sun” burns so good. CSS goes “crazy” on the explosive “Dynamite” and “Too Hot” more than lives up to its title. “The Hangout” borrows from the `80s, while “Teenage Tiger Cat” sounds like the future. There’s only one thing wrong with the five-

song “Name Game” EP by queer duo We Are/ She Is. It’s too short, leaving listeners hanging, desperate to hear what else the pair is capable of doing. No one likes to be teased (or to be called a tease), but if that’s what We Are/She Is intended to do, they have succeeded. It’s safe to say that with only five songs, there’s not a clunker to be found. As exhilarating as the best pop music can be, the delirious anthem “And The World” sets the pace with its fist-pumping energy. “Voices” are the kind you won’t mind having in your heard and “Ricochet” will keep you bouncing off the walls. There’s nothing remotely resembling the sophomore slump on lesbian singer/songwriter Julia Weldon’s awesome second disc “Light Is A Ghost (juliaweldon.com). An exceptional songwriter and musician, Weldon offers new hope for the next generation of queer female performers, writing with a maturity that belies her youth. It’s hard not be effusive after listening (repeatedly) to songs such as “Meadow,” “Went To My Woman,” “Careful In The Dark,” “You Never Know” and “Soon.” Julia Weldon, who doesn’t shy away from queer subject matter in her songs (the amazing “All I Gave Her” and “All The Birds”), is an artist with whom you will want to become well- acquainted; the sooner the better.

Pope Francis and Benedict to Gay Country Fight Same-Sex Marriage Video Goes Viral Rome, Italy – Pope Francis is teaming up with Benedict XVI (his predecessor), to reinforce the Roman Catholic Church’s stance on same-sex marriage. The encyclical, spans 82 pages, states marriage is a “stable union of man and woman. This union is born of their love, as a sign and presence of God’s own love, and the acknowledgment and acceptance of the goodness of sexual differentiation.” Although it is only signed by Francis, the encyclical is the first to be written by two popes. In addition to same-sex marriage, the popes discuss other topics as well, such as a call-to-action for Catholics to communicate with members of other religions or nonbelievers. The Associated French Press reports that it also states that there is “no contradiction between the Catholic faith and the modern world.”

Los Angeles, CA – Steve Grand is a country singer who seems to be in the right place at the right time. It’s unusual for a Country singer to be openly-gay (minus local sensation known as Jonathan Wiley), so Grand’s first music video ever, “All-American Boy,” is a bit of a shock to the culture. The video (which already has over 500,000 views as of print) tells the story of a young man, portrayed by Grand himself, who falls in love over the course of time with – you guessed it – an all-American boy. The crush ends up being straight, misreading Grand’s advances and ultimately chalking it up to a “bromance.” While there are no hard feelings at the end of the story (the all-American boy gives Grand a hug and mouths a few reassuring words), Grand is noticeably saddened. The sadness will likely fade away, as the video has gone viral in a very short amount of time, and Grand is in the market for a label.

OutServe-SLDN’s Executive Director Announces Departure Washington, D.C – Last week, the LGBT military group known as OutServe-SLDN, continued to make changes to their staff. After asking executive director Allyson Robinson to resign at the end of last month, there was a bit of a backlash from both board members and supporters of the organization. Robinson, who is the first transgendered person to helm a major LGBT organization, received fantastic feedback from supporters, eventually releasing a statement in which she explained she would continue to lead the organization until the end of the near term: “At a date to be determined, I have decided of my own accord to step down, and will work with our members to ensure an orderly transition to the next phase of this organization’s life.” Now, the co-chair who has been under the microscope since the Robinson

fiasco, Josh Seefried, tells BuzzFeed that he will be stepping down from his position. The board of directors announced a “transition committee” who will appoint new leadership to the Board of Directors and will oversee the organization’s new direction. Seefried told BuzzFeed, “The fact that this PR disaster happened is on my leadership, and I own that.”

Tilda Swinton Poses With Rainbow Flag In Moscow Moscow, Russia – Academy Award-winning actress Tilda Swinton posed for a quick photo op in Moscow, proudly holding a rainbow flag directly in front of the Moscow Kremlin. The photograph, which was taken by one of Swinton’s reps, Christian Hodell, shared the photograph with the world along with a quote from the actress herself: “Please share this message from Tilda: ‘In solidarity. From Russia with love.’” Swinton is likely standing up to Russia’s recent bill banning the adoption of Russian children by same-sex couples (including ones from other countries), as well as the anti-propaganda bill which bans promoting any non-traditional relationships to minors.

Kevin Frost, the head of the Foundation for AIDS Research, released a statement expressing his excitement for the research: “While stem-cell transplantation is not a viable option for people with HIV on a broad scale because of

its costs and complexity, these new cases could lead us to new approaches to treating, and ultimately even eradicating, HIV.” “It’s really very exciting,” said IAS president-elect, Chris Beyrer, MD. “I’ve never seen this much enthusiasm for the cure research agenda.”

ast week, CNN reported that two patients with HIV are showing no signs of the virus in their bloodstream following bone marrow transplants. The two men, whose identities are not known, were on antiretroviral (ARV) drug therapy for years before receiving a lymphoma diagnosis. Following the diagnosis, the two men received thorough chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants, remaining on ARV therapy. Six to nine months later, the virus was undetectable. The two men have been living with the virus for roughly 30 years. The news was presented at the International AIDS Society Conference, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The clinical trial, which was conducted by Dr. Timothy Henrich, is still being closely monitored by experts at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA, and is being labeled as an impractical approach for most people with the virus: The mortality rate for the transplant is up to 20%., according to Henrich. Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious diseases at the Nation Institutes of Health, Dr. Anthony Fauci, expressed a similar concern. “This is not a practical approach for someone who does not need a stem cell transplant since the transplant and its preparation and its subsequent need for chronic immunosuppression is a risky procedure,” says Fauci. “If you have a tumor like these patients had, then the risk outweighs the benefit. However, if you are doing well on ARVs and you merely want to get off ARV therapy, then the risk seems greater than the benefit.” Henrich told BBC the results were promising, but addressed the elephant in the room: “We have not demonstrated cure, we’re going to need longer followup.” Henrich said, “What we can say is if the virus does stay away for a year or even two years after we stopped the treatment, that the chances of the virus rebounding are going to be extremely low. It’s much too early at this point to use the C-word.” The C-word Henrich is referring to is “cure,” and while it still may not be final, it’s a huge moment for the development of a cure. Henrich is hopeful of the evidence, going on to say, “I think we can learn quite a bit from this type of study.” This recent treatment ties in to Timothy Brown, codenamed “Berlin patient,” who had a bone marrow transplant from a donor who was resistant to HIV, and is said to be the first person to be cured of AIDS. These patients however, received bone

because you want to learn what they are sharing, but because you just feel this different kind of connection to them than the girls? Yeah, you’re going to want to start getting used to those feelings too, cause that’s the way it’s going to stay buddy. The Good Lord didn’t do you any favors orienting you so, but let me be perfectly clear: You are not a victim and if you refuse to give up on yourself, you can live a life of courage and dignity like few others, but I’m not going to sugarcoat this to you. You could have been dealt an easier hand. As for your tennis, first thing I would say is don’t quit Little League. This tennis stuff is really tough. Regarding your tennis career, I suggest losing the “playing super consistent, never miss a ball thing.” Not taking risks, playing it safe, playing not to lose, will only take you so far, and by the time you realize the limitations of that style, it will be too late to do anything about it. You will have spent countless hours on the court in that particular mindset that even if you developed the skill set to play a high risk high reward game, I’m not sure you’ll have the time to develop the trust in it to implement it. So playing it safe for fear of losing will eventually catch up to you on the tennis court. Off the tennis court, it’s the same. If I could tell you that you will lose everything in tennis and business, not from being found out, but from your own fear of being found out, would that matter to you?

was on the ESPN website the other night and saw this new section of essays titled ‘Dear Me’, where top stars write letters of advice to themselves as young athletes. Tennis player Andy Murray was featured as well as out-of-the-closet MLS soccer player Robbie Rodgers. The few I read were quite unremarkable, obviously written by the athletes themselves. It wouldn’t have been the worst time to put their publicists to work and pen some poignant and inspiring words. Either way, I love the concept and I hope they keep it alive. Then I got to thinking: “If I could write a letter today to myself as a coming of age athlete, what advice would I give a young me?” Dear 15 year old Bobby Blair.... How ya feeling there big guy? Little confused? Little scared? Little concerned about feeling so different? Yeah. I wish I could tell you some 30 years later conditions were different for up and coming athletes like yourself. I mean, conditions are a little better in the sports world. We’re actually on quite a roll these days in society, rolling back a whole bunch of backwardness by the day. But as for what advice I would have for you? You know how you don’t quite feel all the feelings all the guys keep talking about regarding the girls? Yeah, you’re gonna wanna start getting used to that because that ain’t changing anytime soon. And you know how you like to hang out with your guy friends when they’re carrying on about the girls, not

And that all the things you thought you had acquired and achieved as a young man were merely an illusion. The closeness of the friendships...How close could they ever really be hiding your true self so? You are going to need to take some risks with your off court life, and I think you know where I am going with this. WC Fields once said he would never be a part of a club that would have him as a member. Well I would never want you to call yourself a member of a profession that would refuse to embrace you as you truly are. Whatever gains you think you are protecting by keeping your orientation in the closet can not compare to the freedom and dignity you will feel in living an honest and authentic existence. I know, I know. You think I’m crazy for suggesting you come out about your sexuality, but you’re going to do it eventually and there never is a right time. To every gay man I have spoken to and met in my life, they all wish they would have come out earlier and that there were more mentors out in society that they could look to for guidance and support. And if some reject you out of fear, that’s infinitely better than you rejecting you and remaining hidden in the closet for the opposing but equally wrong reasons of you fearing them. For when times seem toughest, you will just have to trust in God’s love and the goodness in your fellow man, for we are truly all from the same stock. They are composed of the same loving and compassionate heart that you are, and they will understand why you hid your true self. There will never be a good time to come out and there will always be a great deal of fear around the decision. You don’t need to cry yourself to sleep, or rehearse what you would say to all the loved ones in your life if you could just muster the courage to do so. against you, and yet not all of us are for you. Many will not have your best interests in mind either, and just because you share a sexual orientation with someone does not mean you share the same values with that person. An asshole is an asshole no matter which way they swing. Remain wary at all times. People will want to define you and label you, and that is real, my friend. Try as you might, you will smell the fear, hear the smears and feel the hard cold shoulder of rejection far more than any young person should ever have to. It won’t seem right, and it won’t seem fair, but get over it, for there are no sure things in life. Life ain’t fair for a whole lot of people, a lot less fortunate than you. If you want people to respect you, you have to respect yourself first. You’re going to do things in your young life for all the wrong reasons, just like every straight person you will ever meet; but doing those bad things does not make you a bad person any more than it does anybody else, for we are all perfectly flawed in our human condition. Finally, start preparing for life after you’ve hit your last competitive ball, for there will still be quite the haul to go. Start looking around early and often for ways you can make a difference. Winning fame and fortune on the tennis court is great and all, but nothing compares to improving the quality of another person’s life, day after day after day. There will be those who confront you and oppose you no matter what you do. And how sadly steeped in ignorance they are. You’ll have infinite choices to apply to your finite energy reserves. Will you employ your best self? I say follow your heart, my young friend, oppose hate with love, and pray instead of retaliating. Focus on opening hearts instead of minds, for that’s where the love’s at. Try to make a difference as you grow up into the person you will yearn to have in your soon-to-be tumultuous youth, and become that loving mentor guide to the next generation of young Bobby Blairs who will need role models to look to. Hopefully just like you.

ABOUT BOBBY BLAIR

obby Blair was born October 24th, 1964 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Blair was an American professional tennis player in the 80s and ranked in the top five tennis players in the United States nationally in the Boys 18 and under, and was a member of the 1983 US Junior Davis Cup Team. He reached the finals of The USTA Boys 18 and under National Clay Courts Championships in the summer of 1983 where he lost a three-set marathon match to future world top-ten player Aaron Krickstein. Blair was one of the first top-ranked players to be developed at the famed Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy near Bradenton, Florida. Bollettieri provided a full scholarship and covered all expenses for Mr. Blair from 1980-1983. In 1983, Blair received a full scholarship to the University of Arkansas, a top-

ten ranked Division 1 tennis program. He was the #6 seed in the 1984 US Olympic trials held at The National Tennis Center home of the US Open Tennis Championships in Queens, NY. Blair was also a member of the 1986 US Junior Davis Cup College Team and participated in Russia as a member of the American team in the US Goodwill Games. Blair became All American in 1986 and was ranked among the top-five Division One singles players in the United States. He counts career wins over several former top-10 players in the world including Wimbledon Champion Pat Cash, French Open Finalist Mikael Pernfors, Karl Novacek, Emillio Sanchez and grand slam doubles champion Rick Leach. He also had career victories over several top ranked ATP tour professionals such as Todd Witsken, Jorge Lozano, Luke Jensen, Robbie Weiss, Jim Grabb, Fransisco Roig, Karl Novacek,

Emillio Sanchez, Derek Tarr, Brad Pearce, Steve Devries, Shelby Cannon, Chris Pridham, Christo Van Rensburg and others. Upon retiring from tennis in March 1988, Blair launched the United States Rookie Professional Tennis Team at the 1988 NCAA Tennis Championships in Athens, Georgia. The team provided coaching, mentoring and a structured team environment for top-ranked American tennis players for their rookie year on the professional tennis tour from 1988 until US Open Tennis Championships of 1990. In 1990, Blair was hired to be head coach for Billie Jean King for the World Team Tennis Franchise Wellington Aces for the 1990 & 1991 season. In 1992, Blair was hired as head coach and general manager of the World Team Tennis Franchise Tampa Bay Action. That same year, Blair started the Bobby Blair Tennis Academy in Orlando, Florida, that coached some of the very best junior players in the United States. In 1996, he hit a pinnacle in coaching as he was hired as a USTA National coach for the best Boys 16 and Under players in the United States. Around the same time, Blair began his real estate enterprise in Orlando, Florida, in which he specialized in the purchase, renovation and reselling of homes to help first time home buyers achieve the American dream of home ownership. This led, in 1997, to his hiring by internationally acclaimed entrepreneur monthly Success Magazine to be the National Real Estate spokesperson for the publication, reaching out to real estate entrepreneurs across the world by providing a real estate seminar and workshop platform to educate potential real estate investors. Blair continues to coach and mentor entrepreneurs on the most upto-date ways to invest in real estate. In 2007, Blair purchased an LGBT men’s entertainment magazine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with the intention to grow a national LGBT news and entertainment platform. In 2009, Blair launched the Florida Agenda, which today is one of the most well-known and respected LGBT newspapers in the United States. In June 2012, Blair took over share and board control as CEO of Cybermesh International Corp., an OTC BB public company with stock symbol CYTL. His sole purpose for heading the publicly traded company is to create an LGBT international public media company. The company currently has plans to expand into the Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles, San Diego and Palm Springs markets in 2014. Blair is currently authoring his autobiography with writer Barry Buss. “I hope to be able to encourage and inspire the next generation of aspiring gay athletes in their journey,” Blair said. ASK THE FITNESS MAN By PETER JACKSON, CPT BUILDING YOUR BACK: WIDE GRIP VS. CLOSE GRIP Q: Should I be doing wide-grip or close-grip movements to build the muscles in my back? A: You should be doing both because your grip (wide versus close) together with the type of movement, affects which part of your back is trained. Many guys focus on the “vanity muscles”—the chest, biceps and triceps— and fail to build the muscles of their back, leading to an imbalance which leaves you with slumped shoulders and poor posture. Your back is comprised of several muscles including the large, triangularshaped trapezius muscles (or traps) in your upper back, the rhomboids which lie beneath them, two large muscles on the outer edges called the latissimus dorsi (or lats for short) , and the erector spinae in your middle and lower back. Generally speaking, the lats are emphasized when a wide grip is used in exercises such as the Lat Pull-down and Pull-ups. When you use a close-grip, you tend to emphasize the rhomboids and traps as your elbows remain close

At Sirocco, the surprise isn’t so much in the ingredients, but rather in the way they are combined. Order the Kafta Kabob ($18), which the menu says contains lamb and beef, and expect to get chucks of each meat on a wooden skewer. Since it’s been a while since we travelled the streets of Lebanon, we had allowed the amazing aromatic kafta spices to be misplaced in our taste bud memory. How wonderful it was to rediscover this Mediterranean treat where the meat is ground and mixed together, with allspice and cumin and coriander and mint, presented at Sirocco with a bed of julienned beets and sliced tomatoes and onions. Yes, $18 for what is essentially a few meatballs is expensive, but oh-h the flavor! There is also an amazing Seafood Mixed Grilled. At $55, you’re paying for the privilege of chowing down on a five-ounce lobster tail, grilled with calamari, shrimp, and salmon, topped with a Balsamic glaze and lemon butter sauce. It is presented beautifully, and once again, it is the startling blend of flavors and aromas that keep this plate scoring well above the ordinary. Sirocco offers belly dancers wiggling around the room, baton twirling fire dancers to keep you amused, with live musical performers nighty. On Friday and Saturday nights, Sirocco stays open to 3 a.m. with the Hard Rock Casino keeping the customers coming until closing. giant chandelier hangs heavy over the center of Sirocco, the new Mediterranean restaurant that’s wedged among a host of others at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino outside eating and shopping experience. Sirocco is the traditional name of the unexpected wind that blows from nowhere over the Sahara, and it’s with this same sort of mystery that Sirocco, the restaurant, presents itself. While the linens are crisp, the lighting is dim and seductive, with dozens of hookah pipes adding their special aroma and exotic flair that has nothing to do with the excitement that comes out of the kitchen. There, the magic is all from master chef Federico Elkarout who was born in Lebanon, and trained in Italy, but it’s his Arabic roots that are display here. Plan on starting your meal with a hearty bowl of Lentil Soup ($5), a deliciously thick treat that is as nutritious as it is tasty. This brown lentil and potato recipe has a whisper of lemon juice and is served with toasted pita bread. It’s a bowl chocked full of protein, fiber, iron potassium—and flavor. Another not-to-be-missed appetizer is the creatively Grilled Calamari ($14), a romantically presented dish served on a bed of greens and tomato concasse, and drizzled with a housemade Balsamic glaze. This one’s a keeper. Equally as succulent is the Lobster Manchega ($14) that’s misspelled on the menu as Lobester Monchego (but if you can create something this good, you don’t need to spell). This dish features elbow pasta that looks like gomiti baked in a casserole with lobster and manchega cheese. For the uninitiated, manchega cheese originated in Spain, and comes from the milk of sheep. Creamy and smooth, it makes a perfect complement to the chucks of lobster offered here. Where Chef Elkarout really shines is when he let’s his imagination run back to his childhood to a time when kabobs

borigines living in the northeastern part of North America were the first people known to have produced maple syrup and maple sugar. According to their oral traditions, as well as archaeological evidence, maple tree sap, which they called “sweet water” or “Sinzibuckwud” (drawn from trees) was being processed for its sugar content long before Europeans arrived in the region. There are no authenticated accounts of maple syrup production and consumption among early aboriginal groups. Various legends exist as to the origins of maple syrup production; one of the most popular involves maple sap being used to cook venison served to a chief. Many aboriginal dishes replaced the salt traditional in Europe with maple sugar or syrup. This is a traditional Canadian recipe. 6 thick-cut pork chops 3 golden apples 3 tablespoons of Canadian maple syrup Salt and pepper A pinch of nutmeg Vegetable oil and butter

About half an hour before cooking your chops, take them out of the fridge and season them well. Preheat the oven at 400F. In a cast iron pot, heat up a knob of butter along with a tablespoon of vegetable oil. When it becomes a nice golden color, sear your chops for 3 minutes, on both sides. Peel, core and halve your apples. Brush them with some lemon juice (to avoid that they oxidize) Place an apple half on each pork chop and coat them with maple syrup. Season well with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Cook in the oven for 40 minutes. That’s it! You are a chef.

ess than two hours after the Supreme Court announced the defeat of the Defense of Marriage Act, and the drop kick to California’s Proposition 8, the international travel site Orbitz (orbitz.com) launched its latest on-line contest offering a pair of first-class tickets to destinations allowing gay marriage, highlighting the Golden State. According to its advertisement, its “Take Vacation Back Photo Contest” celebrates “the defeat of DOMA and marriage equality progress!” The ad featured to men leaping in joy over what looked like the Great Salt Lake. (And you thought white boys couldn’t jump.) The Orbitz campaign is only the latest effort by the online travel agency to push gay travel. (It doesn’t hurt that the Human Rights Campaign has given Orbitz a perfect Corporate Equality Index score, don’t you know.) Not to be outdone, San Francisco’s JW Marriott Union Square (500 Post Street) announced its “Love Is Love Is Love” marketing campaign aimed at same-sex couples. For a mere $324 plus, a pair of samesex guests can expect to receive a one-night stay, a three-course dinner from executive Same-Sex marriage en masse at the San Francisco City Hall

The hotel, originally built by architect John Portman in 1987 as the Portman Hotel, is a deluxe affair with large rooms and a city view that, while not exactly commanding, isn’t the selling point here. The Marriott Corp. gets what much of America is increasingly learning: there is a great deal of money to be made promoting gay marriages and offering services directed marketed to same-sex couples. California officials estimate that as many as 37,000 gay marriages will take place in the state over the next three years,

generating $50 million in sales tax for the financially strapped economy from $492 million in added revenue. These estimates are considerably higher than the figures generated by New York State that began to legalize same-sex weddings in 2011. Manhattan added $16 million to city revenue, on a total of $259 million in spending. Because of its beaches and West Coast location, California is expected to far exceed those figures. In Pasadena, California, the Langham Huntington Pasadena (1401 S Oak Knoll Ave) is offering an elegant vacation package to same-sex couples that incorporates a garden wedding and a ballroom reception. The hotel, built in 1907, offers a choice of two tastefully planted grounds, including a tranquil Japanese garden. This, the hotel suggests, is perfect for those same-

sex couples who would like to exchange vows with their significant others “under the gaze of friends and family.” In this garden, there is a koi-filled pond over which stands a red wooden bridge, perfect it seems for that first married kiss, representing “crossing into a new life together.” Word of caution: the hotel’s motto is “refined indulgence,” so if the Huntington is in your future plans, behave. And then there’s John Cassese, (1440 4th St, Santa Monica) known as the Dance Doctor to you. Cassese is celebrating the heave-ho of Proposition 8 by giving special classes to same-sex couples who want to prepare for their nuptials and their first dance together. He’ll take all the guesswork out of who leads and who follows. Your only decision is who pays his bill. Let the California celebrations begin.
