COVER STORY

Project Get Engaged!

HOPES TO ACHIEVE GAY MARRIAGE IN FLORIDA Equality Florida Board Member Mayda Perez & Family

BY ROBERT PATRICK

July 17, 2013 H 6

M

any Floridians felt underwhelmed after the DOMA appeal. After all, Florida wasn’t even close to legalizing gay marriage so, nothing short of uprooting our lives and moving to California, how could this affect us? Equality Florida—the premiere gay rights organization in Florida—understood this dilemma and crafted a project as a solution: Get Engaged!. In conjunction with the national organization Freedom to Marry, Get Engaged is focused on swaying the public opinion in Florida on gay marriage. Similar organizations in states across the country paved the way for marriage equality and the recent Supreme Court victory. Florida is part of the equation, now—a leader in the South in terms of acceptance. In 2008 60% of voters embedded marriage discrimination into the constitution, but today 54% of voters are in support of marriage for same-sex couples. Despite these dramatic gains, polls indicate that 63% of voters don’t realize that the majority supports marriage equality. Get Engaged! is focused on the fastest path to marriage equality in Florida. The organization has just about everything on the table, including new legal challenges and the possibility of going back to the ballot to overturn Florida’s discriminatory ban. On the website, www.imengaged.org, there is a link to become a plaintiff in a Florida marriage lawsuit. The website also highlights the real stories of people affected by Florida’s lack of marriage equality, including Fred and Sarge, living in Tamarac who have been together for 20 years. Frank and Sarge actually met in New York City. They are the proud pet-parents of six cats: Sundance, Smoke, Kaya, Norma Jean, and Gilean. They have the benefit of a Domestic Partnership in Broward County but they’ve had to take extra measures to protect their life decisions and property. Ed Lally and Phil Dinkins met 36 years ago at Badland’s bar in downtown Louisville on a Tuesday evening. While their first date was casually held at a Steak-N-Shake, their feelings began to grow. A few months of dating led to their long 36-year relationship. The couple is still thriving in Tampa, but they too want to be able to express their relationship through marriage. Get Engaged! highlights exactly why marriage is so

important. Without changing the public opinion on how important gay marriage is in the state, it is unlikely that we could gain that freedom. According to the website, marriage says “We are family” like no other word. It is a fundamental freedom that no person should be denied. It strengthens families in a way no other “domestic partnership” or “civil union” possibly could. State and federal marriage laws provide a safety net of local and economic protections for the couples and their children, including hospital visitation rights and the ability to transfer property. Even more interestingly, the website also targets specific ethnic communities and how gay marriage may affect them. For example, the African-American community has the highest percentage of same-sex couples raising children. 58% of black female same-sex couples and 45% of black male same-sex couples are raising children.

Because they are more likely to be raising children, at comparatively lower wages, black same-sex couples have more to gain from legal recognition of their relationships and more to lose when states pass amendments banning marriage and other forms of partner recognition. Get Engaged! is hoping for as much support as possible in stretching the gay marriage fight across Florida. With more public awareness across the state on the importance of gay marriage, it’s inevitable that gay marriage will be achieved right here in Florida. Log on to www.imengaged.org and find out how you can help in your own way. If you or someone you know have children in a same-sex relationship/marriage, we want to hear from you! We will be publishing an LGBT Family Issue in August.

SUNSHINE STATE

Fort Lauderdale – Singer Toni Braxton tweeted a reaction to the verdict of the Trayvon Martin case, in which she said, “Today I am embarrassed to be an American... my heart goes out to the Martin family.” Local politician Michael Rajner retweeted the message, saying “I too am embarrassed to be an American when our government and society fail to empower and protect all people.” However, Braxton’s tweet didn’t sit well with everyone. Fort Lauderdale Tea Party founder Danita Kilcullen is a regular at meetings for the Broward County School Board Diversity Committee. The diversity part is a little hazy, as her personal Facebook account’s recent post appears to say otherwise. In response to Toni Braxton’s tweet, Kilcullen said, “Yo, girl, you can’t take America’s justice system? Go be an African!!”

THE SENSATIONALIZED TRIAL OF ZIMMERMAN/ MARTIN

f it wasn’t before, Trayvon Martin officially became a household name this past week. The media hyped up the case to such a grotesque level that the population slowly forgot what the real trial was about, and basically chalked it up to a modern-day reverse OJ Simspon trial. You were either for Zimmerman or you were for Trayvon Martin. The problem is, OJ Simpson was a suspect, whereas

While I grieve the loss of Trayvon Martin, I have just one question: Why was this trial so sensationalized? “Racially-charged trial” may come to mind, and unfortunately, that’s likely the case.

Photography • Stephen Kuttner, Dennis Dean T.J. Gillespie, Lissa Good, Big Dewitte

Zimmerman actually did kill Martin. People of the world were up in arms. Was Zimmerman in the wrong for shooting the teen, or was he merely acting out of instinct, fearing for his safety and possibly his life? The court decided it was the latter, and a good portion of the world spun out of control. Beyonce asked the crowd for a moment of silence at one of her concerts before singing an emotional, “I Will Always Love You,” while Miley Cyrus tweeted, “I feel sick. #RipTrayvonMartin. No justice, no peace.” Rihanna even threw her two cents in: “This is the saddest news ever!!! #whatsjustice #pray4theMartinFamily.” The hashtags really make these sentiments more meaningful for the younger generation. While I grieve the loss of Trayvon Martin, I have just one question: Why was this trial so sensationalized? “Raciallycharged trial” may come to mind, and unfortunately, that’s likely the case. But what about Mark Carson? The name doesn’t ring a bell in majority of households across the country? Mark Carson was a 32-year-old African American man shot dead in Greenwich Village. He made headlines for a day or two, but nothing compared to Zimmerman and Martin. Did we mention that Carson was shot in a hate-crime for being gay? Fascinating how the media decides what issues

people should riot over. A 17-year-old is demonized by Zimmerman’s defense attorney and people are protesting. I’m assuming when Carson’s case finally takes place, defense attorneys will twist the story around, placing blame on Carson for being at the wrong place at the wrong time: “Well, Carson was flaunting his sexuality around like a loaded gun, so my client was merely defending himself.” I can see it now. After all, conservative radio host Bryan Fischer just recently tweeted: “For example of injustice, don’t look at Zimmerman. Look at what Supreme Court did on DOMA, Prop 8. There’s your travesty.” The Trayvon Martin case was so hyped that it brought a half-baked “blacksversus-whites” theme to the foreground (even though Zimmerman is mostly Hispanic). It’s really unfortunate. Personally, I think that Zimmerman should have been found guilty. However, at the end of the day, it isn’t my business, nor is it yours. The case and trial is for the friends and family of Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman, and the judge/jury: It’s not for us. If you want to protest, you have that right. What isn’t right, is turning on CNN to see a Brady Bunchstyle split screen with five people talking over each other about a case they have no connection to, for days upon days. Let the boy rest in peace.

stand on the subject of same-sex marriage? Stand on it? There’s no stand, everyone should live and be the way they want!

n “Cloudburst,” Stella (Olympia Dukakis), a foul-mouthed, old-school butch dyke and her longtime partner Dottie (Brenda Fricker), a visually-impaired, doughy femme, are threatened with separation after Dottie takes a fall. Dottie’s clueless granddaughter tricks her into signing a legal guardianship document and then proceeds to move her into a long-term care facility. But Stella will not be deterred and busts Dottie out of the home. As the pair heads to Canada to get married so that they can have some kind of legal rights, they pick up hitcher/hustler Prentice (Ryan Doucette) and embark on a series of adventures none of them had ever anticipated. “Cloudburst” is a sweet comedy with serious undertones, in which the women actually talk and relate to each other the way longtime couples do. It’s like “Hannah Free” with a real script and real actresses. “Cloudburst,” now on DVD, includes a behind the scenes featurette and cast interviews among its bonus features. I spoke with Olympia Dukakis about the movie and her LGBT following. Gregg Shapiro: Stella, the character that you play in “Cloudburst” has, shall we say, a way with words. Olympia Dukakis: [Laughs] And gestures! Have you ever had the opportunity to play a character in possession of such a vast vocabulary of profanity? No. I’ve never played anyone so openly rebellious (laughs]. Unfortunately, it’s a real part of my nature so I kind of took to it like a fish to water [laughs].

Although it utilizes humor, “Cloudburst” takes on the serious subject of aging queer people and how there is the potential of them being separated in their twilight years. Oh my god, it’s a painful, painful thing which is something that Stella just refuses to accept. That’s why she abducts Dottie and takes her off.

although the movie does not go into all of that, but it implies that. Stella took it on and was rebellious in that way. She was probably one of the few at the time—because she didn’t live in a so to speak community of people who could then be supportive of each other. Her rebelliousness is almost to learn about her, because in that first scene she jumps from that policeman’s back and she’s yelling and carrying on. Actually, she starts off that way and she changes and becomes much less rebellious by the end of the movie. Stella is obsessed with k.d. lang and her music. How do you, personally, feel about k.d. lang? [Laughs] Oh, I love her songs. I don’t hear her songs so much now. I remember once I was in a restaurant and k.d. was there with a younger woman and I could see that there was kind of a thing between the two of them and they were very deep in conversation. I just went up and inserted myself and told her how much I enjoyed her music and she was very sweet to me and made it clear to me that she wanted me to fuck off [laughs]. I didn’t stay long of course, but that was my only connection with her. I even remember the restaurant -The Ivy. The movie actually takes its title from one of her songs. Stella and Dottie (Brenda Fricker), her partner of more than 30 years, head to Canada so that they can get married. Where do you

You previously worked with writer/director Thom Fitzgerald on “The Event.” What do you like about working with him? He’s damn good, [laughs] that’s what I like about working with him. I like the stories he tells, I like the way he shoots. He makes beautiful films. Just to look at them, they’re great. The stories are all varied and unique. I was in “The Event,” a story about a gay guy who wants to take himself out because he’s going into the last phases of AIDS, and he has a party. The mother is the one that actually helps him die. That’s an unusual story and a real heart-wrencher. And then “3 Needles.” I would do anything in a movie with Thom Fitzgerald. I told him I’ll play a small part, I don’t care. In “3 Needles” I played this small part of a nun. Before appearing in “The Event,” you had already made a considerable impression on the LGBT community with your wonderful portrayal of Anna Madrigal in the “Tales of the City” series. Were you aware of an LGBT following before that? Oh, no. Well, yes. “Steel Magnolias” to a certain degree—a lot of gay men enjoyed the things that my character said. They loved her humor, her honesty and her phrasing. ”If you’ve got nothing good to say about anybody, come sit by me.” Things like that. I think they enjoyed a lot of it. What does your LGBT audience mean to you? It means to me that there are a large group of people who have enjoyed my films. That’s great and they feel that I somehow what I do is an honest representation. That’s important to me. So many have spoken to me about Anna Madrigal, how much they appreciated that I didn’t sensationalize it. I was really only interested with human being and her efforts to survive herself, which I certainly understand and I identify with that [laughs]. I have had my own efforts and journey to survive myself.

Stella, who lives in Maine, is what I would describe as a classic Northern New Englander. As a New Englander, yourself, have you ever encountered anyone like Stella? I’ve encountered people who have insisted on their own lifestyle even against what might be considered the grain, what might be considered the acceptable. There is a kind of eccentricity that some people have in the New England area. They don’t succumb to what’s expected, but decide they’re going to have the life they want, etcetera. That I’ve encountered. But I think that Stella, because of the time she came out and connected with her partner, Dottie, was a time when lesbians, and not just lesbians but gays, it was not as it is today where many insist on being open with it and being honest about who they are and how they want to live. So, I think in that period of time,

rowing up in Birmingham, Michigan, Paul Bunting is really an all-American kind of guy. He wrestled throughout his teen years and although he doesn’t like labels, in retrospect, he knew he was gay. “I don’t really get into the labels because for me, I think that labels are a way to divide people. I think if we continue with division....it’s not going to be good for anybody.” Bunting is truly ahead of the curve. He had an out of body experience when he was younger in which he felt concerned about the direction the world was heading. He went on to battle a drug and alcohol addiction until the age of 37, when he realized that he had to stop. He discovered that he can do daily meditation, breath work, let go of anxiety and worry to the best of his ability in order to stay sober and sane. The minute he stops, he feels the need to medicate. Bunting feels that this is the case for most people with addictions, whether they come to terms with it or not. Now, Bunting is using the life experience as a way to help others. He’s working with people and educating them through his Alignment Yoga techniques. Bunting works with people who have medical or physical challenges, showing them breathing techniques, meditations, and other

holistic approaches for those seeking mental wellness. Bunting is just one of the many local community members who took a personal hardship and turned it into a positive experience in order to help many people for years to come. Be on the look out for Paul Bunting’s upcoming monthly column in the Florida Agenda.

SF Trans Activist Jazzie Collins Dies San Francisco, CA – Jazzie Collins was a well-known transgender activist involved in social justice cases, particularly in the San Francisco area. Collins died July 12

at the Kaiser Permanente Hospital in San Fran, at the age of 54. Collins was HIV-positive, and while the San Francisco Chronicle reports that friends claim her health had deteriorated within the past few weeks, the cause of death is still being investigated. Collins was recently recognized by the California Legislative Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus for her work at the state’s Capitol in Sacramento. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, says, “One thing that she always had that was very appealing was dignity. I think she understood the dynamics of the challenges she faced personally and who they connected to the causes she was in personally.” Collins was a volunteer/organizer for Senior and Disability Action and was the vice chair of San Fran’s LGBT Aging Policy Taskforce. Collins is survived by her mother, Mary Mackey, four brothers and four sisters.

Washington, DC – The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act on Wednesday morning, with a vote of 15 to 7. The committee’s vote means that the bill will now go to the full Senate, where it will have to obtain 60 votes in order to beat a potential filibuster. If passed by the Senate, the bill will prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Following the decision, the White House issued a statement from the press secretary, stating President Obama

is welcoming of the bill: “The President has long supported an inclusive ENDA, which would enshrine into law strong lasting and comprehensive protections against employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.” The committee proceeding lasted less than 15 minutes with no Republican members speaking out against the bill. The bipartisan vote is a major step for the LGBT community and the nation as a whole. As always, the Florida Agenda will keep you updated on any developments.

Oklahoma City, OK – Google announced that it will be throwing a fundraiser for Oklahoma Sen. Jim Inhofe. Recently, Google helped to fund a wind farm in Oklahoma that powers data centers in the state. The newest fundraiser will benefit the addition of a second data center. According to The Washington Post, Inhofe has a record for voting against LGBT rights issues. He is in favor of banning same-sex marriage, is openly against ENDA, and is against adding sexual orientation to the definition of hate crimes. He even states that he doesn’t hire any openly-gay staff for fear of a conflict of agenda. Google’s headquarters are in Washington state, and ironically, Google itself supported same-sex marriage in Washington prior to its legalization. A Google representative told The Washington Post that it should not be viewed as an endorsement for Inhofe’s personal beliefs. The representative said: “We regularly host fundraisers for candidates, on both sides of the aisle, but that doesn’t mean we endorse all of their positions. And while we disagree on [his] climate change policy, we share an interest with Senator Inhofe in the employees and date center we have in Oklahoma.”

ancouver, Canada – One of Glee’s most beloved actors, Cory Monteith, died on July 13, at the age of 31. The young actor was found dead in his hotel room at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel in Vancouver. When the young actor failed to check out in the morning, the hotel’s staff went into his room to discover his body. According to the coroner, Monteith died from mixed drug toxicity (heroin and alcohol). On March 31, 2013, Monteith was reported to have entered himself into a treatment facility for an unknown substance addiction. Monteith completed the treatment on April 26, admitting he had previously battled substance abuse when he was 14. One of the Original Kings of Comedy Dave Matthews Band Cedric the Entertainer is a king of comedy. First appearing on the radar of mainstream viewers through the “Steve Harvey Show,” Cedric went on to star in the “Barbershop” films as well as The “Original Kings of Comedy.” Cedric is slated to take the reigns as host of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” in the 2013-2014 season, replacing current host Meredith Viera. President of Disney-ABC, Janice Marinelli, says, “With his deep roots as a successful stand-up comedian and actor, Cedric will bring his fresh approach and unpredictable fun to the show.” When it comes down to it, Cedric is a supreme stand-up comedian, so this is really a performance that any fan wouldn’t want to miss. 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

Formed in 1991, Dave Matthews Band has been entertaining audiences for decades. Their first studio album, “Under the Table and Dreaming,” achieved some commercial success, with singles peaking in the top 20 under Billboard Pop Songs. Their second album, “Crash,” is where they received national success, with single “Crash Into Me,” one of their biggest singles to date. Though they’ve been touring for decades, DMB is surprisingly only on their eighth studio album (2012’s “Away from the World”). The group are notorious for their live albums and sold-out stadium shows, focusing more on performances than cranking out CDs. Though “Away from the World” was one of the band’s slower selling albums, it received

praise from critics and placed 29th on Rolling Stone’s list of the top 50 albums of 2012. 7 p.m. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601 Sansburys Way, West Palm Beach, 33411.

The members created their names using the first name of a famous sex symbol and the last name of a famous serial killer (i.e. Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson), a tongue-in-cheek jab at American culture. With names like that, you can imagine what the live performances have been like over the years: Manson has wiped his butt with the American flag, set fire to a copy of the Bible, and used Nazi-like symbology...all on stage, live. The haunted singer is touring in support of his 2012 album, “Born Villain.” 7 p.m. Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

Bartenders Boxers and Briefs The annual “Bartenders, Boxers and Briefs” benefit is finally back. Bid on your favorite bartender’s underwear to help raise funds for Tuesday’s Angels, a nonprofit Section 501(c)3 Organization that “provides funding on an emergency basis to men, women and children with HIV/ AIDS that have little or no income,” according to the Angels’s official website. Come out and support a great cause by watching your favorite bartenders auction off their skivvies. MC and Auctioneers include Miss Kitty, Russell (Stable), Nikki Adams, Toni Barone and special guest porn star Tom Wolfe. 8 p.m. Bill’s Filling Station. 2209 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Fun with Dick & Jen Jennifer McClain and Richard Cortez are two of Wilton’s most well-known performers. Recently crowned Mr. Stonewall, Richard Cortez is a Florida-native singersongwriter known for a sultry voice and his outgoing personality – Jennifer McClain, for her perky attitude and ability to belt it out like the best of ‘em. Together, the duo puts on one fierce variety show, Fun with Dick & Jen. The interactive show is perfectly complimented by a killer happy hour, maracas, kazoos and tambourines. Sing along to their harmonious covers of hit songs, laugh at their dirty knock-knock jokes and drink in the fun of a Wednesday happy hour with live entertainment and two local legends. 6 p.m. Dudes. 3270 NE 33rd St, Fort Lauderdale, 33308.

If you’re looking to relive serious 90’s memories, don’t fret: the ultimate lineup is heading your way. Yes it’s a little unusual that 311 and Sublime with Rome will be under the same roof as Cypress Hill, but at the same time, it makes perfect sense. Throw in support act Pennywise and you’ve got yourself a throwback concert worthy of a few memories. 311 (known for their singles “Down” and “All Mixed Up”) is a monster of a band. They have sold over 8.5 million records in the US alone, and are currently working on their eleventh studio album, to be released later this year. Sublime with Rome is a collaboration between original members of the group Sublime (known for their singles “What I Got” and “Santeria”) and singer/guitarist Rome Ramirez. They formed in 2009, performing songs by Sublime, before releasing their own album, “Yours Truly,” in 2011. 5 p.m. Cruzan Amphithteatre. 601 Sansburys Way, West Palm Beach, 33411.

The Manor’s first foam party is here, and let’s be honest – you couldn’t be more excited. Maybe you’ve been dying to show off that new bathing suit, maybe you’re just looking to see people all sudsy, or maybe you’re just looking to cool off. Whatever the reason, you won’t want to miss the club’s first foam party and dance event. The Epic Saturdays night, appropriately titled “Waterworld,” will have both an outdoor foam arena and an indoor dance arena (for those of you who don’t want to get your panties wet). Sounds by DJ Manny Lehman. 10:30 p.m. The Manor. 2345 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Coinciding with Dawoud Bey’s “Picturing People” exhibit, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami presents a body of work from its own collection. The official site describes the collection as pieces that “embody the irregular results of seemingly routine commands.” 2008’s With You Are Cordially Invited to Tea Time is an interactive art piece, created by artist Susan Lee-Chun, while a painting installation from Los Angeles-based artist Elad Lassry takes viewers on an adventure in the study of communication, contracting professional Mexican billboard painters to replicate his small-scale diptych. Other works by Alex Hubbard and Paul Kos “relate the sequencing of compositions or events to entropy, the loss of energy in a system,” according to MOCA’s official site. Other artists include Francis Alys, Alfredo Jaar, John Miller, Rivane Neuenschwander and Hank Willis Thomas. On view through September 8. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami. 770 NE 125th St, North Miami, 33161.

veryone needs variety in their training sessions in order to prevent boredom and guarantee results. Implementing techniques like supersets (working two opposing muscle groups at the same time) and compound sets (using two or three exercises for the same muscle group until fatigue) are great ways to get that extra burn in a muscle group. Alternating heavy training days with lighter training days now and then help to prevent injuries and burnout. When it comes to equipment, most gyms give you a variety of ways to get pumped. This being the case, I am constantly asked which produces the best results, free-weights or machines.

there is the whole issue of storage. Here are a few good reasons to use machines: Some machines, like the pec deck for the pectoralis major, are more efficient in isolating the muscle group. For group use, some machines are better in terms of space utilization. A case in point, one jaunt around the Universal machine and you can practically get a full body workout in no time. The disadvantages of machines are many. Most machines are very large to store, extremely pricey and tend to isolate only one muscle or muscle group at a time. The majority of these muscle-building contraptions are built to serve an average sized person. Very short or very tall people find it almost impossible to use many of the machines currently on the market. Personally, I am a big fan of freeweights simply because you can do so much with them: build mass, increase flexibility, etc. Machines, if you have access to the right ones, can make your workouts quicker and help you isolate problem areas. Remember, nothing beats hard work, consistency and good old-fashioned sweat! For more tips on how to maximize your time in the gym, contact TrainerTomB@aol.com.

Here are a few reasons why free-weights should be the basis of everyone’s resistance training regime: When you workout with dumbbells and barbells, it’s easier to take your joints through their full range of motion as you work out the muscles. Standing, with your feet spread apart at shoulder width, back straight and head looking straight ahead, is the preferred stance when lifting weights. This way you are more effective in developing the smaller synergistic (helping) muscles and stabilizer muscles when you are targeting a muscle group. Barbells and dumbbells are versatile and convenient. You can easily grab two 35 lb. dumbbells and do three sets of curls for biceps and then move a few inches down the rack and do triceps kickbacks with the 40’s. Power is improved more efficiently and to a greater extent through the use of free-weights. Other crucial aspects of fitness including lifting for size, improving flexibility, reducing body fat and muscle toning are all achieved more efficiently through the use of free-weights. There are a couple of disadvantages to free-weights. Dumbbells and barbells are sometimes clunky and have to be maintained and re racked. And if you’re working out at home,

GAZPACHO

RECIPE

G

azpacho is a cold Spanish tomato-based raw vegetable soup, originating in the southern region of Andalusia. It is widely consumed throughout Spain, in neighboring Portugal and parts of Latin America. Gazpacho is mostly consumed during the summer months, due to its cold temperature and acidic bite. There are many modern variations of gazpacho, often in different colors and omitting the tomatoes and bread in favor of avocados, cucumbers, parsley, watermelon, grapes, meat stock, seafood, and other ingredients. It’s so easy to add and taste, and basically play around with the different flavors. So, the following is a typical method of preparing gazpacho and, as I always say, you are the chef! Traditionally, gazpacho is made by pounding the vegetables using a mortar and pestle. This method is only for people who are cavemen or who don’t have a blender. The vegetables are washed and the tomatoes, garlic and onions are peeled.

All the vegetables and herbs are chopped and puréed in a blender or food processor until liquid, or pounded with a mortar (for the cavemen) depending on the desired consistency. The soaked bread is then added, you can also use breadcrumbs. Chilled water, olive oil, Balsamic vinegar and salt are then added to taste. Garnishes may be made with fresh bell pepper slices, diced tomatoes and cucumber, a sprig of fresh basil or other fresh ingredients. Enjoy, it’s burstin’ with flavor and vitamins!

the long haul. Our favorites are Country Fried Steak and Eggs ($6.55) with hash browns and biscuit, or the usual assortment of omelets running from Cheese Omelet ($4.95) to the House Omelet ($6.95). For those with stomachs as big as their eyes, you can’t go wrong with the Breakfast Burrito ($5.95) or the Biscuits with Country Sausage Gravy ($4). Equally good and extremely filling. There is an entire menu devoted to the first meal of the day, and any number of ways to assort the offerings. Either a la carte or combo sized, be certain to give the Hash Browns ($1.25) a try. They are crisp with a perfectly browned outer fringe with moist, potato shreds inside. It’s the kind of Hash Brown dish that is impossible to duplicate at home, so it’s definitely worth an add-on to any order placed here. This being a BBQ joint, of course you can except to find succulent baby-back ribs. Here again Dixie Pig does not disappoint. A full rack of St. Louis Ribs with North Carolina sauce is $17.95. This is a moist, meaty, and delicious choice for those who want that splurge of cholesterol. (A half-rack comes in a $10.95). The ribs are smoked three hours, lathered with sauce and finished on the grill. Mmmmmmm is the word that comes to mind. And when it comes to Pulled Pork, Beef or Chicken Plates ($7.50) here, the key is to remember that sauces are optional at Dixie Pig. There is a selection of sauces—from North Carolina vinegar, to Sweet BBQ, to Mustard—which should be added to the meat portion. Dixie Pig does not make that flavor selection for you. Become part of the cooking experience and enjoy.

here’s a little shack of a restaurant on North Dixie Highway—little more than a roadside stand really. It calls itself Dixie Pig BBQ, and with its bright orange façade among a string of auto repairs and scaffolding shops, it’s hard to miss. At first glance, two things stand out immediately. It is the only local place proudly billing “Authentic North Carolina Barbecue.” And there’s always a “Help Wanted” sign in the window. For the uninitiated, North Carolina Barbecue uses a vinegar-based sauce commonly marinated over pork shoulder, though chicken and beef are also slow cooked in the tasty brew. At Dixie Pig, they smoke their meats for 14 hours (4 hours for chicken), and the result is a unique savory wipe-your-face-whenyou’re done menu. But what is most surprising at the Dixie Pig is not their famous BBQ. What hits the pleasure point here is the showcase flavor in the Brunswick Stew ($2.95 cup, $4 a bowl, $5 a pint, and $8.20 a quart). Brunswick Stew is a tradition in North Carolina, where squirrel is the common meat of choice. (Yes, squirrel.) Fortunately, at Dixie Pig, they substitute chicken and load the pot with corn, lima beans, okra, and potatoes in a tomatobased stew that is thick and hearty. We’re also a big fan of the breakfasts served here. Regardless of what you order, expect a man-sized platter to be delivered at your outside table. All dining at the Dixie Pig is al fresco. There’s nothing quite like eating breakfast at a picnic table surrounded by warehouses and auto shops to make even the most degreed of college professors feel like a blue collar worker. And breakfast at the Dixie Pie is definitely the substance for

e are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” Or so felt Oscar Wilde who wrote that line in “Lady Windemere’s Fan,” a play which premiered at London’s St. James’s Theatre in 1892. Later that same year, the very openly gay Wilde began a speaking tour of America, and for a brief time during the summer, visited the old Perkinson Hotel in Cherry Grove—even then the fun place to go on Fire Island, the central barrier island to the south of Long Island. What Wilde began was reinforced with the arrival during the 20s and 30s of gays and lesbians of all stripes—from movie stars and designers to the hustlers and companions who served their needs. Next door to the Grove is Fire Island Pines, the other gay destination on the Island and home to the most expensive real estate in this tiny enclave of a few hundred. That number, of course, swells into the

thousands after Memorial Day when the “gay invasion” officially begins and continues until Labor Day. There are a number of ways to get to Fire Island, but the most popular begins at Penn Station (7th Ave & 8th Ave between 31st St & 33rd St), where you want to find the Long Island Railroad’s train to Sayville. This is a multi-stop trip and will require you to change trains at either the Babylon or Jamaica stations. Once in Sayville, take a $5.00 shuttle bus to the Fire Island Ferry, which during the summer leaves every two hours and will cost $14.00 round-trip out to the Island. For those who like their meals in prepackaged combos, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) provides the Beach Getaway Package Deal ($32) which includes round-trip tickets assembled for you and includes all the above. If you are traveling during peak times

and on weekends, be aware that both the train and the ferry can carry only so many people and will often be standing room only. On the plus side, this body-to-body experience can speed up the cruising, and new friends are routinely made on the Ferry trip alone. Total time for this outing is 2 ½ hours. You can of course drive to Sayville, where you’ll have to ditch your rental car in any case, since there are only emergency vehicles allowed on Fire Island itself. There is also the option of a seaplane, which can make the trip from city to Fire Island in 20 minutes. Shoreline Aviation (800-443-0031) operates out of the 23rd street seaport on the east side of Manhattan. Baggage is limited to 20 pounds total weight. You’ll want to pack lightly in any case, for even it you take the train, there is no need for a lot of fancy duds on Fire Island.

The largest hotel on Fire Island is in Cherry Grove. The Grove Hotel (631597-6600) is the local version of a Motel 6—basic lodgings that are conveniently located in the thick of the social action. A standard room at the Grove will currently set you back $369 on a Saturday, $299 on a Friday, $199 on a Sunday, and $159 the remainder of the week. The Belvedere Guest Hotel (631597-6448) is our favorite choice since the rooms have been totally renovated (thanks for Hurricane Sandy). There is a two-night minimum on weekends when luxury rooms go for $444 a night. Stay at this clothing optional resort and indulge yourself. The Pavilion Nightclub, which burned to the ground in 2011, reopened this summer and is back in full action. As with most things Fire Island, it gives HOT a new meaning.
