marry in civil or religious ceremonies, but the latter has to agree to perform the ceremony, as well as the minister conducting the ceremony, according to CNN. The law also protects religious organizations who don’t want to conduct same-sex marriages from being tried in a court. The divided opinion of Parliament made the debate all the more difficult: Conservative Member of Parliament Gerald Howarth referred to the LGBT community as “the aggressive homosexual community,” stating they would “see this as but a step-

ping stone to something even further.” After the law passed, Labour lawmaker Chris Bryant tweeted: “The Queen has given Royal Assent to Same Sex Marriage. Aggressive homosexuals, please note. Go forth and propose.” Following the passing, Culture Secretary Maria Miller stated “The title of this bill might be ‘Marriage,’ but its fabric is about freedom and respect. Freedom to marry regardless of sexuality or gender, but also freedom to believe that marriage should be of one man and one woman,

and not be marginalised.” Miller went on to add that conservatives should not think that their personal stance on marriage has been undermined or dismissed. Even the Quakers stand by the decision, according to BBC. A quote has surfaced from a recording clerk for Quakers in Britain, Paul Parker:“It’s wonderful to see same-sex marriage achieve legal recognition. Quakers see the light of God in everyone so we respect the inherent worth of each individual and each loving relationship.”

ondon, England – Last week, Queen Elizabeth II gave her blessing to same-sex marriages, acting as the final step in the year-long wait for marriage equality in England and Wales. House of Commons speaker John Becros said the queen’s approval came on Wednesday, which will allow same-sex weddings to commence in summer of 2014. On May 21, the bill passed a third reading in the House of Commons with a vote of 366 to 161, passing its third reading in the House of Lords on July 15. Advocate reports that Prime Minister David Cameron is credited with the push for marriage equality, referencing a quote from a speech 2011, where Cameron said, “Yes, it’s about equality. But it’s also about something else: commitment. Conservatives believe in the ties that bind us; that society’s stronger when we make vows to each other and we support each other. So I don’t support gay marriage in spite of being a conservative, I support gay marriage because I am a conservative.” Openly gay member of Parliament, Chris Bryant, has questioned the government’s wait for marriage equality, through a statement on Twitter: “Why is the govt taking nearly a year before same sex marriages can take place?” The politician’s inquiry was answered by a representative from England’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport via U.K. News site Gay Star News. The representative responded to Bryant’s claim, stating “Parliament will also need to scrutinize a number of statutory instruments setting out how the new arrangements will apply to other legislation. On the detail of certain processes; and to ensure that marriages of same-sex couples in England and Wales are treated in Scotland and Northern Ireland as civil partnerships.” The new law allows same-sex couples to

Time to Rejoice Alison Moyet Talks About Her New Album “The Minutes”

ong before there was Adele, there was Alison Moyet. A blue-eyed Brit soul goddess, who when she opened her mouth, a black woman fell out. First belting it out as one-half of the groundbreaking UK duo Yaz (known as Yazoo in their homeland), with Vince Clarke (formerly of Depeche Mode and currently with Erasure), Moyet ascended to the diva throne. With only two albums to its credit, Yaz singlehandedly set the tone for the electronic dance music we listen to today on the strength of hits such as “Situation,” “Don’t Go” and “Only You.” As a solo artist, Moyet racked up her share of hits, including “Invisible” and “Love Resurrection.” Back with a velvet-voiced vengeance on her marvelous and timely new album “The Minutes” (Cooking Vinyl/Metropolis), Moyet returns to the electro realm of her youth. Triumphant from start to finish, Moyet utilizes the production and songwriting skills of Guy Sigsworth, creating a disc of timeless tracks, ranging from dance-floor-destined “Right As Rain” to dramatic fare including “When I Was Your Girl.” “The Minutes” will provide listeners with hours of pleasure. I spoke with Alison shortly before the domestic release of the album.

Q&A

Gregg Shapiro: In between the release of “The Turn” and “The Minutes,” you reconnected, if you will, with Vince Clark for a Yaz (as you were known stateside) reunion tour. Looking back on it, was the experience good for you? Alison Moyet: It was brilliant. It was absolutely brilliant on many levels. For one, I’d wanted to work in electronic again for a long time. To be able to sing over those sounds is brilliant. For two, you never ever get to do a set where every single song is known inside out by the people that come and see you. It’s almost like playing a full set of singles because your whole catalog is well visited. For three, the second album “You and Me Both,” we never got to play live before. For me, live is the crux of it all. A project is not finished until I find out what it’s like to sing those songs live. To get to do that and to find Vince and I...I have become a much gentler character and Vince has got a bit more heat in his blood, so we met more in the middle. It was a lovely coming together. It really put all of our demons to bed, I think. One of my most vivid memories of the Yaz concert I attended in Chicago was the

way you were beaming onstage. Were you prepared for the reception that you and Vince received? I’m kind of an optimist in that way. Generally, live, whether the crowd is big or small, they’re with me. I don’t doubt that. Having said that, the noise was so phenomenal; sometimes it was even hard to hear the tracks. I had wanted to come back and play in America for a long time. Every single one of my boxes was checked that night. It was just fantastic. And yes, I was beaming. I’m always smiling other than when I’m singing a torch song, but I’m smiling in between because I love it so much. It was a really fantastic standout experience. Would you say that the Yaz reunion played any part in the increased use of electronics on your new album “The Minutes,” particularly on songs such as “Right As Rain” and “Love Reign Supreme,” which utilizes them more than say your previous disc “The Turn?” No, it didn’t. What I would say is that I’ve been wanting to work electronica for a long time. I was slightly put off in the ‘90s by the big stream of techies. The ones that came to fore didn’t seem to have as much musical knowledge as they had technical knowledge. Consequently voices and songs were treated with a lot of disrespect in the sense that they were sped up, crammed in, put in such

a way that you think, “F*** it, just take the voice out, I’d rather listen to the track.” You become so fixated with the beat that you’ve lost the song a bit. The joy of Yaz, way back then, was the fact that the songs were intact. Even the Kevorkian remix, even that held faith with the song and the pitching and all that. It made it more attractive. It doesn’t help that I was a bit remote and never did network in music anyway. I never came across the people that I have faith to work with again. I would have worked with Vince any time over the last 20 years because I still think we have a lot to say to one another musically. I’ve wanted to do electronica but it was really about finding the right person and it took me a long time to find Guy. You recently described the disc on “The Graham Norton Show” as “the most cohesive work” you’ve ever done. When Vince and I worked together either Vince wrote the songs or I wrote the songs. We collaborated twice. One was a great success, which was “Situation.” One was not so great, which was “The Other Side of Love.” (So) we worked individually. But this album, Guy and I completely spoke the same English. Whereas Vince and I didn’t communicate, Guy and I really did. We still kept our separate boundaries. Me having complete control over the lyrics and the melodic content; Guy with his musi-

week, I will be featuring members of our community who share their real stories of bravery, tenacity and a strong will to survive. Their dilemmas and hardships are ones to which we can all relate. Yet, in the end, these leaders came out on top. Combining our print edition with our strong online presence, I will be bringing the community inspirational stories in a whole new way. In addition to the print version of the column, we will also feature an Internet talk show segment through guymag.net and floridaagenda.com. You’ll be able to see episodes of the talk show “Thriving In South Florida With Bobby Blair,” exclusively through our sites. rowing up in Birmingham, Michigan, Paul Bunting is really an all-American kind of guy. A wrestler throughout his teen years, you might be wondering/ hoping, “But is he gay?” Bunting told us, “I don’t really get into the labels because for me, I think that labels are a way to divide people. I think if we continue with division....it’s not going to be good for anybody.” Bunting is truly ahead of the curve. “It took me until I was 37 to come to terms with my personality type. If I were to have just one drink, that’s okay. But if I catch a buzz, I know that I’m in trouble.” He discovered that he can do daily meditation, breath work, to let go of anxiety and worry to the best of his ability. If he stops, he feels uneasy. Bunting feels that this is the case for most people, whether they come to terms with it or not. Now, Bunting is using the life experience as a way to help others. He’s been a personal trainer since 1997 and has been certified to teach yoga since 2003. In 2007, Bunting became ERYT-500 certified, standing for “Experience Registered Yoga Teacher.” The 500 stands for the 500 hours of teaching that he’s completed. Most recently, Bunting is working with

people and educating them through his Alignment Yoga techniques. Bunting works with people who have medical or physical challenges, showing them breathing techniques, meditations, and other holistic approaches for those seeking mental wellness. Bunting is just one of the many local community members who took a personal hardship and turned it into a positive experience in order to help many people for years to come. Be on the look out for Paul Bunting’s upcoming monthly column in the Florida Agenda.

It probably goes without saying that you have a considerable following in the gay community. When did you first become aware that you had attained diva status among the gays? Diva, I don’t know, but in terms of support from the gay community – from day one. I think that when you are outside of the mainstream, as gay people have been, as I have been, and you are constantly having to fight for your own right to be, I think you recognize that in other souls. When you have other souls who are like-minded and stand forward then you feel a collective pride in that. We are other. And isn’t being other great?

Memories and remembering are recurring themes throughout “The Minutes,” as in “Changeling,” “Remind Yourself” and “Love Reign Supreme,” for example. Here I am in middle age and often times I started my lyric writing from the kind of influence of the young Janis Joplin fan that I was where every song is almost like a French Lieutenant’s Woman; there’s always some torture or someone’s done you wrong kind of business. I found myself starting with this album thinking as a longtime married woman whose next significant birthday is 60 and whose next significant life event is grandchildren, it’s not romance that occupies me. I can write these things but it’s all about projection. For me, it’s far more about reflecting, looking inside to see how you’ve absorbed the information that you’ve taken in in your life. They come from different perspectives. “Changeling” – thinking about how when we’re young things seem so simple, you

The single “When I Was Your Girl” is so moving and powerful. Would it be fair to say that it has as much to do with you looking back at your girlhood as it does being a mother reflecting on the fleeting girlhood of her own daughters? Oh, yes, absolutely. In fact, probably more that because in the video, where you see my daughter there, the reason she’s presented quite blankly like that is more about how you understand love completely differently when you’re 16 than you do when you’ve lived a gritty life. It’s that transition from the innocence, the open page to this other place from where you believe in the always, to you stop believing the always.

thought that you were moving and never imagined that the world was moving off in a different place to you, never imagined that you were taking a different route. You thought you could always turn back and find your hometown or anywhere exactly the same as it was. But here we are as adults, with this speed, everything has gotten so fast and aggressive and mad you can’t understand how anybody functions. Then you’ve got something like “Love Reign Supreme,” which deals with why it is that we hang on to these barbs and griefs in a way that we wouldn’t hang onto a ticket from the worst journey that we ever had. It’s when we are at our most loveless, we feel most abandoned that we should find the greatest love in us to give to other people. That’s the time when you can stand apart and count yourself as achieving something, when you can give something that you have to give. In terms of “Remind Yourself,” the greatest criticism that anyone can apply to me is that I think too much. I internalize too much. A simple conversation with someone can be replayed in my head for months, if not years, if it has taken a turn that I feel uncomfortable about. This is a song that deals with the neurotic self-doubt, self torture that has been a part of my interactions with other people to this chorus where I’m talking myself down. I’m just reminding myself that the moon does roll. The very thing that I thought as a kid would never happen and am destroyed that happened, this can be seen in a good way. The moving on, the passing of time, you will get over and forget this grief.

cal palette building up the tracks. We found ourselves in such great communication that we didn’t argue or disagree on anything. We didn’t find disagreement. I find that the fact that this album was made over three years and that I had no record deal or no record label wanted to work with me with new material--had loads of people who wanted me to make cover albums, but no new material--the fact that we had that amount of time to work meant that everything was really well considered for our taste.

ver the weekend, I noticed something: No one on Facebook in America cares about the royal baby. International affairs are always a toss-up with Americans – will people care, or will they kick it to the curb just like their local news? In this case, it seems to be the latter. Maybe it’s a generational thing. It seems that American youth cares about pop culture and entertainment news, national tragedies and sports. For example, a young gay male I came in contact with on Monday didn’t even know about the gay ban in Russia. I was surprised since it’s been circulating around for quite some time now, but I brushed it off. “Maybe he’s just too busy with his own life to keep up with current affairs,” I thought. But what a ridiculous thought to think, right? When I brought up the

birth of the royal baby (it had just been announced moments earlier), he scoffed and said, “Yeah, but who cares?” Now I know that it isn’t exactly the biggest piece of news to hit our side of the pond, but how could you not care, even just a little bit? After all, he’s going to rule a leading country one day. There’s a reason that our country is, at times, under the public eye for ignorance. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, “apathy.” Barack and Michelle Obama gave their best wishes. So what gives with you guy? In a statement, the president and first lady said: “The child enters the world at a time of promise and opportunity for our two nations. Given the special relationship between us, the American people are pleased to join with the people of the United Kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince.” Even Vlad-

imir Putin extended his congratulations to the royal couple. As anti-royal baby posts flooded Facebook (where all walks of life coexist), I realized that the people who were criticizing the attention to the birth were the same ones who praised England and Wales’s passing of same-sex marriage just a few days prior. I couldn’t help but think back to the day that Princess Diana died in 1997. Though there was virtually no social media at the time, it was all over the news and on the lips of millions of Americans. Why did people care so much about the death of one royal, but not the birth of another? Lastly, why is your child or nephew/niece any more important than this baby? And why do you think I want to see it in my news feed? What makes your news more special than that of someone else? Quandry.

Miami-Dade Considers LGBT Rights Legislation Miami, FL – Miami-Dade County Commission is preparing to take a critical vote on LGBT rights, according to Equality Florida. On August 26, the MiamiDade County Commission will hold a public hearing to consider legislation that, if passed, will protect Miami-Dade’s LGBT community from discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations. The amendment would also protect gender identity. Equality Florida reports that recently during a committee hearing, right wing activists filled the room to make their presence known, overwhelming the committee with phone calls and emails. To show support for your community, you can do two things: Call Commissioners Jean Monestime and Jose Diaz (305-375-4833 and 305-599-1200 respectively) to tell them that you support adding gender identity to the Human Rights Ordinance, and send an email to the commissioners through a submission page on Equality Florida’s website, eqfl.org.

Press Release for DOMA Workshop @ Pride Center August 8

Tallahassee, FL – Equality Florida and fellow equality partners ACLU Florida, Lambda Legal, Mary Meeks, Esq. and Elizabeth Schwartz, Esq., have banded together to create a statement on the progress of Florida’s path to marriage equality. According to a Public Religion Research poll, 54% of Florida voters are in support of samesex couples, while another poll by Public Policy Polling showed 75% of Floridians support providing all the benefits of marriage to gay couples via marriage/civil unions, with only 23% opposing legal protection for same-sex couples. The organizations are each working on their own goals to further our pursuit of equality in a number of ways, according to the statement. While it’s possible to get the issue on the 2014 ballot, the organizations state that “it is better to invest in the tried and proven public education campaign that has helped to accelerate the shift in public opinion in states where victories have been achieved.” The team states that a lawsuit challenging the consitutionality of Florida’s gay marriage ban “may be the most viable immediate option in Florida, but must be pursued with care.” They state that there are at least 8 lawsuits pending on the topic, with more expected to surface soon. Equality Florida’s Get Engaged project has focused on LGBT Florida couples who could become potential plaintiffs in the legal challenge, sharing their own personal, compelling stories in order to increase public support for marriage equality. Dan Savage Freaks Out Panelists on Bill Maher Hollywood, CA – When journalist Dan Savage popped in for a visit on Bill Maher’s “Real Time,” he reportedly made guests a little uneasy, as seen in the video clips from his visit. He spoke of the Supreme Court rulings on gay marriage and why lesbian couples are more likely to be monogamous than gay male couples, stating that the latter is due to “d***.” Savage went on to discuss how his son came out as “straight,” joking that kids will always rebel against their parents. But things got a little awkward when Savage stated that whenever people tell him that gay people can’t have children of their own, he tells them, “Anything is possible for God... I’m gonna keep inseminating my husband and keep my fingers crossed.” The camera immediately went to conservative guest Grover Norquist, who was visibly uncomfortable, before Maher said that Savage should change the subject to avoid any discomfort.

Ohio Couple’s Marriage to be Recognized Columbus, OH – John Arthur and James Obergefell have been together for over 20 years, and after Arthur was diagnosed with ALS, they decided they “deserve to be beside each other in perpetuity,” according to the Cincinatti Enquirer. After boarding a medical jet, the couple was wed at the Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Upon their return, the couple was told that their marriage would still not be honored on Arthur’s death certificate. The couple filed a lawsuit on Friday against Ohio Gov. John Kasich, and received a ruling

in their favor merely days later. “This is not a complicated case,” said U.S. District Magistrate Timothy Black when speaking of his ruling, reports BuzzFeed. “Ohio law has historically and unambiguously provided that the validity of the marriage is determined by whether it complies with the law of the jurisdiction where it was celebrated.” Black made sure to say that the ruling only applies to Obergefell and Arthur specifically.

House Republicans Drop DOMA Defense Washington, DC – House Republicans have reportedly dropped their legal defense of the Defense of Marriage Act, the Washington Post reports. The court filing states: “The Supreme Court recently resolved the issue of DOMA Section 3’s constitutionality. The Windsor decision necessarily resolves the issue of DOMA Section 3’s constitutionality in this case. While the question of whether 38 U.S.C. 101 (3), (31) is constitutional remains open, the House has determined, in light of the Supreme Court’s opinion in Windsor,

that it no longer will defend that statute. Accordingly, the House now seeks leave to withdraw as a party defendant.” The House Republicans launched their defense of DOMA after the Justice Department announced in the spring of 2011 that it would no longer defend the federal law in court, with the Huffington Post reporting that they were prepping to spend $3 million defending the law.

Federal Judge Orders Arkansas Marriage Ban Faces Federal Challenge Little Rock, AR – According to the Arkansas Times, two lawsuits have been filed against the ban on same-sex-marriage in Arkansas. On Thursday, the judge that was assigned to the federal challenge removed himself from the case, due to personal relationships with the state officials who passed the ban in 2004. The case has now been reassigned to Judge Kristine Baker, appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas by President Obama in 2012. The federal challenge in Arkansas

was filed by two lesbian couples that were denied marriage licenses when they applied for them in Pulaski County, along with a gay male couple who is already married. The lawsuit says that the Arkansas law and constitution violate the equal rights and due process provisions of the U.S. Constitution.

Dutch Tourists Arrested In Russia Murmansk, Russia – Over the weekend, four Dutch tourists were arrested in northern Russia for violating the recent ban on “homosexual propaganda.” The tourists allegedly told immigration officials that they were visiting the country to visit, when in actuality they were there to film a documentary about the LGBT community in the town of Murmansk, according to Lenta. After the group’s film footage was taken into custody, they accused the group of interviewing a 17-year-old LGBT teen: The group states that at the time of the shoot, the teen told them that he was 18. The four Dutch tourists were fined 3,000 roubles each ($93) for violating visa rules, and are the first to be jailed over the ban.

The tour was received so well by fans and critics alike that the band added 24 additional tour dates for the summer of 2013: The tour marks the first time that Michael Nesmith has performed with the band again since 1997. Monkee Micky Dolenz told Rolling Stone, “The reaction to the last tour was euphoric. It was pretty apparent there was a demand for another one.” The tour is appropriately titled “A Midsummer’s Night With the Monkees.” See the “Daydream Believer” hit-makers in this extremely rare performance in the comfort of Mizner Park. 8 p.m. 327 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, 33432.

Jekyll and Hyde Jekyll and Hyde is a classic tale of split personality that we’re sure everyone can relate to in one way or another. Let’s be honest, everyone has their days. Poor Dr. Jekyll

Yes, Ozzy Osbourne is still alive and kicking. The Black Sabbath singer recently reunited with the original band’s lineup to record their nineteenth studio albun, “13.” Following its release, “13” made it onto the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200, gaining praise from critics and fans alike. Rolling Stone TUESDAY 07/30 magazine once said that the band “changed music forever,” claiming they were “the Beatles of heavy metal.” If a successful reunion tour Marilyn Bridges has an interesting approach to photography. HEALTH

Q: I can’t do barbell squats because I have a herniated disc in my lower back. My chiropractor has advised me not to do squats with a barbell on my shoulders as the weight will compress my spine and aggravate the situation. Can you suggest an alternative exercise? A: True, barbell squats are very effective but there are many exercises that will recruit the same muscle groups without putting as much stress on the lower back. Ideally, you want to carry the weight closest to your center of gravity thereby reducing the torque and stress on your entire back. A simple variation of the barbell squat is a dumbbell squat: 1) Hold a pair of dumbbells at your sides. 2) Slowly lower yourself into a seated position by pushing your hips back and bending your knees. 3) Pause, then push yourself back to the starting position. HEX BAR: An essential tool for anyone with back issues is a hex bar – basically, a barbell with a hexagonal center. This bar allows you to squat and perform other exercises from inside the encompassing bar which you hold on either side. The stress on your back is minimized because the weight is evenly distributed at hip level. Many bodybuilders with back issues rely on the hex bar to execute squats and deadlifts as the bar uses plates just like the barbell but reduces the risk of injury.

EXERCISE SPOTLIGHT

I strongly recommend the use of a hex bar by anyone with joint or bone density concerns. Other exercises you should try include the Seated Leg Press, the Seated Leg Extension and Seated Leg Curls. All of these isolate the glutes, quadriceps and hamstrings, will protect your back and help you build the killer legs you want. My associate Chase Brendle, who has vast experience with corrective exercise, uses the following test to evaluate proper form when executing a squat: Stand facing a wall with your body about six inches from it. Attempt to squat by sending your hips back and down while opening your knees. The wall will ensure your back is erect and your weight is properly loaded into your heels. “If you have are not proficient at this movement, I highly recommend practicing it without weight until you are able to complete the movement smoothly,” Chase advises.

TIP OF THE WEEK PROTEIN PEANUT BUTTER BALLS • ¾ cup natural peanut butter • ¼ cup honey • 1 scoop vanilla or chocolate protein powder • ½ cup raw oats Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and shape in 1-inch balls. Chill them in the fridge for a couple hours then enjoy as a healthy, nutritious snack or dessert. Peter Jackson is a fitness and nutrition coach and the owner of Push Fitness and Club One CrossFit in Oakland Park. He welcomes your questions at peter@PushFitnessFTL.com.

Bent-Over Raise This is a great exercise you can do at home or in the gym to strengthen your shoulders. Sit on a Swiss ball and lean forward, holding a pair of dumbbells just off the floor. Keeping your arms slightly bent, proceed to raise them up and out behind you until you reach shoulder level. Pause. Return to starting position. Perform 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps, increasing the weight of the dumbbells with each set.

IRISH STEW

A

potato blight that had started in Belgium swept over Ireland’s potato crop in 1845 and triggered widespread famine. In the next two years, two-thirds of the crop was destroyed. More than one million people died as a result of the potato blight, and two million emigrated. Even though we suffered through the Irish Potato Famine, Irish people continue to love potatoes. Irish stew is a filling, flavorful peasant dish made with the cheapest, most readily-available ingredients. Every Irish household has its own version of this famous dish so here’s mine. If you use a tougher cut of meat like the neck or scrag, you can leave it to simmer longer before adding the spuds.

RECIPE

Add the bouquet garni. Throw in the spuds and the browned onions. Bring to a boil before turning the heat down to low and • 1 tablespoon olive oil cover. Simmer for 2 hours or longer. (poblano rajas, corn, lettuce, crushed chili salsa and cheese). Buy one, two, or three at $2.99, $5.49, $6.99, with your choice of toppings—chicken,,ground beef, carnitas, steak, fi sh, or veggies; with your choice of shell—crispy, soft corn, whole wheat, white fl our or lettuce. Large and tasty, and, yes, fresh to order. If you’re noticing a pattern here, it’s because Salsa Fiesta has streamlined the ordering process by providing consistent meat toppings withcustom-created fi llers for a nearly endless variety of design-it-yourself dishes. From Fajitas ($9.99 for chicken, $11.99 for steak, or $10.99 for a combo) to Grilled Quesadillas ($4.99-$7.49), Enchiladas ($7.99$8.99), and Tostadas ($4.99-$5.99), there isno shortage of options to keep the menu exciting while familiar. Perhaps there is no better arena in which Salsa Fiesta shines than in its Burritos. The Mexicano (with its beans, corn, onions, cilantro, cilantro cream, rice and cheese), Santa Fé (onions, peppers, pico de gallo, rice, sour cream and cheese), the it-doesn’t-get-any-betterthan-this Guacamole (pica de gallo, guacamole, lettuce, rice, and avocado cream), Spicy Hot Tamale (chipotle beans, jalapeno, poblano rojas, rice, lettuce and hot tamale sauce), or the Classic with its beans, rice, corn, pico de gallo, lettuce, sour cream and salsa roja, the selections are big, fi lling and individually flavorful. And at $5.99-$7.99, they’re a bargain compared with the competition. Speaking of the competition, it should run, not walk, to Salsa Fiesta to check out the menu, the method, and the madness that packs into this place daily. And tell them Florida Agenda sent you.

o we dropped by Salsa Fiesta Urban Mex Grill last Wednesday for lunch, more out of curiosity than hunger, we admit. The last time we visited this storefront in the strip mall at the corner of Broward Blvd and North Federal Highway was several months ago when Energy Kitchen occupied the spot. That was then, and this is now, with the fourth branch of the local franchise Mexican chain Salsa Fiesta now completely settled in. The concept of “We Believe in Fresh” is hardly new, particularly where Mexican food is concerned. Yet, Salsa Fiesta must be delivering what it promises, because on this particular Wednesday at lunch there wasn’t an empty seat to be found in the place. Like many Mexican restaurants these days, Salsa Fiesta stacks menus upfront, expects you to be ready with your order at the register, and wait patiently with a table beeper for the kitchen to prepare your meal. We tested out the concept by placing an order for the Acapulco Salad ($7.99) that combines romaine lettuce, corn, cilantro cream, fried plantains, pico de gallo salsa and guacamole with chicken, ground beef or pork carnitas. (For a dollar more, you may upgrade to fi sh, steak or vegetables as an alternative to the other meats.) The salad is served in a large Mexican molcajete bowl and is a healthy portion, even for hungry appetites. Perhaps that is why this dish (as are most on the menu) is available in a smaller size ($5.99). Or, go the opposite route and turn the salad into a platter ($1 extra) with mounds of chips and more pico de gallo. The dish is so large, fi nding room at a table for two for these 14 inch-round platters is tough. Of course, you’ll find a way. Tacos at Salsa Fiesta come in four flavors—Original (with pico de gallo, lettuce, tomato, and guacamole), Guerrero (mangos, cilantro, onions, cilantro cream, and cheese), Mero Macho (beans, lettuce, sour cream, chimichurri & cheese) and our favorite Spicy Tangy

TRAVEL

AMSTERDAM Reflecting Pride 2013 BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

July 24, 2013 H 22

COURTESY OF GAYWELCOME.COM

I

t’s party time again in Amsterdam as the world arrives in the Venice of the North to celebrating Pride 2013 beginning on August 1st. The celebration of gay and lesbian rights is now in its 14th year, with the highlight always geared toward the city’s famous canals where the Pride Parade is once again being held. Where other cities have floats on land, Amsterdam floats its own parade via boats. The Canal Parade launches at 2 p.m. on August 3rd from the Westerdok Harbor along the Prinsengracht, one of Amsterdam’s three main canals. At the end of the Prinsengracht, the parade turns left on to the Amstel River, flowing right through the center of town. passing the famous white Skinny Bridge (Magere Brug) and the Stadshuis/Muziektheater before making a right in the direction of the Oosterdok. As it has in previous years, the Canal Parade will feature 80 boats filled with nearly naked men who, according to the official theme “Reflect,” will be contemplating Amsterdam’s role in the progression of gay rights. Yes, most of them

Given the giant strides that the LGBT community has made around the world in the past year, this year’s Amsterdam pride is expected to attract over 100,000 people during the course of the weekend.

are hairless blonds; and yes, they will be drinking on the Amstel, emerging four hours later, drunk, sunburn and very available. The celebration officially begins on Thursday August 1, where you’ll find us at Club Church (Kerkstraat 52), the only naked men’s bar in town. Now in its fifth year, Church is the hottest dance club around, with a back room that lets off its own sexual steam. The following evening, on August 2, Club Church hosts its weekly (Z)onderbroek, its popular underwear party. Check your clothes at the door. If being outside is more your thing, the street parties will be in full swing this night, with the twinks ruling over the Reguliersdwarsstraat, the locale exposing themselves at the Amstel (Halvemaansteeg), and the lesbians overrunning the Rembrandtplein and Paardenstraat

(in front of Vivelavie.) After the parade passes you by, head over to Prik (gotta love that name), the popular bar at Spuistraat 109, where Amsterdam’s favorite DJ’s spin dirty house & happy pop. The official Gay Pub Crawl begins Saturday night as well, 10 p.m. at Taboo (Reguliersdwarsstraat 45). You’ll recall that the Reguliersdwarsstraat was the most gay street in all of Amsterdam— or at least until the June 2010 suicide of local hospitality guru Sjoerd Kooistra. Soon afterward, bars along the street began to fall like dominos including the once-popular Club Exit, Club April, and the ARC Bar. It’s taken until 2013 for much of the former business to return to Reguliersdwarsstraat, where youth now hold court in glaring fashion faux pas and various stages of inebriation. For European filth, and heavy-handed

leather, head over to Eagle Amsterdam (Warmoesstraat 90) where a Cruise and Dance Marathon begins Saturday night at 10 p.m. and doesn’t wind down until 12 hours later. Next door at Dirty Dicks (Warmoesstraat 86), Pride gets a sort of last hoorah with the Fist Factory party running from 3-10 p.m.. If you have to ask, you don’t want to know. Earlier in the day, the Pride Closing Party takes place outside at the Rembrandtplein with special guest artists expected to perform. Given the giant strides that the LGBT community has made around the world in the past year, this year’s Amsterdam pride is expected to attract over 100,000 people during the course of the weekend. Florida Agenda’s Associate Publisher Kevin Hopper will be reporting live from the scene, so you won’t miss a thing.

DaVinci Realty’s Business Is Booming BY GRANT JAMES

July 24, 2013 H 26

I

n March 10 2010, Vince Clancy’s business was exploding. DaVinci Real Estate deals with foreclosures and distressed real estate for Broward County, so 2010 was a particularly busy time for Clancy. Clancy told us, “In the real estate down turn, most saw a crash. I saw a chance for the little investor to take advantage of the big bad banks and make lots of money. Our model worked fabulously for our investors and our company.” Due to the booming of the business, Clancy needed some help. When Denny Hughes walked into his Wilton Drive office and applied for an assistant job, Clancy thought that Hughes’ 12 years of experience would be of some use in the office. “Hughes stated he lost his business in the recent real estate down turn,” Clancy told us. “Many real estate companies had shut down or merged with another. Remax closed offices, Castelli closed their main Federal Highway office, and one of the Prudential franchises changed their name to Better Homes and Gardens. It was a difficult time in our business. It was not hard to imagine his small company failed.” Hughes told Clancy that he had 12 years of experience, and wanted a salaried position as an assistant. When one of Clany’s employees ran a criminal check on him, only one charge was shown: A domestic violence charge in 2006. “Had she done a civil search at the time, I would have never hired Mr. Hughes. He certainly did not tell me about his legal and criminal issues at his former companies in the interview.” On March 30, 2010, Clancy received a call from a woman crying hysterically. She told Clancy she was Hughes’ mother and that he had been arrested. Clancy fired Hughes after a followup interview between Hughes and former Federal Prosecutor, Chris Mancini. Mancini questioned Hughes about the cases, but “Mr. Hughes seemed argumentative, defensive and emotional during the interview,” according

Vince Clancy to Clancy. “Mr Mancini concluded that Hughes was not telling the truth (in his opinion). I fired Mr. Hughes immediately as I felt he was being disingenuous. Mr. Hughes was employed at my company for a few weeks. He was paid a weekly salary and NEVER was a realtor at my company. Furthermore, his real estate license had been revoked a year prior to walking through my door by the Florida Real Estate Commission (FREC). None of Denny Hughes’ misdeeds or alleged crimes happened at DaVinci Realty Group Inc. No DaVinci clients were harmed by Hughes.” DaVinci Realty opened an office on Wilton Drive in 2009 and has been thriving ever since. Clancy opened a second office, on Las Olas Boulevard, in 2011. He is now opening an office in Houston, where they have partnered with a local builder, and are on track to build 100 homes in the central Houston area within a year. In 2013, the group launched DaVinci Capital - a fund to finance projects and give returns for their investors grossing $2 million profit on two foreclosure transactions. Moving forward, Clancy intends to open more DaVinci offices. If you wish to contact Vince Clancy, you may do so at www.davincirealtygroup.com
