LGBT Activists Boycott Russian Vodka BY GRANT JAMES

your objectives to fight against prejudice in Russia. In the past decade, [we have] been actively advocating in favor of freedom, tolerance and openness in society, standing very passionately on the side of the LGBT and will continue to support any effective initiative in that direction.” The letter also touched on it’s commitment to the LGBT community in the US, referencing a series produced by the
company in 2006, called “Be Real: Stories from Queer America,” which featured mini documentaries on real people facing the challenges and celebrating the accomplishments of our community. In an interesting approach, The Daily Beast mentions that the boycott is a “potential business boon for non-Russian [vodka] brands.” Beast reports Skyy Vodka tweeted a timely ad that read “Cheers to Equal-
ity,” with a bottle of Skyy and a martini in front of the American flag. Owner of G Lounge (a bar in New York), Michael McGrail said, “Gay men love vodka, but our customers are ready to move past Stoli.” When speaking on whether or not the boycott will be successful, McGrail raised a valid point: “This isn’t going to change the world, but it’s little things like this that get people talking.”

ay bars across the country are now boycotting Russian vodka in an effort to fight back against the lack of equal rights in Russia (notably the recent “gay-propaganda” and gay adoption ban). Videos and photos of bars pouring out bottles of Stolichnaya and Russian Standard flooded the internet, and quickly rose to a national level, ala the great “freedom fries” incident of 2003, where US restaurants temporarily renamed the fried potato in response to France’s opposition to the invasion of Iraq. Dan Savage wrote that the goal of the boycott is to “show our solidarity with Russian queers and their allies and to help to draw international attention to the persecution of gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, trans people and straight allies [in Russia].” The vodka boycott has since stretched to the United Kingdom and Australia, putting further pressure on the companies to stand up and do something about the issues. But what exactly can the vodka brands do? According to some, not much. Russian LGBT activist Nikolai Alekseev told Gay Star News, he doesn’t see it producing any change within the country. “To be honest, I don’t see the point in boycotting the Russian vodka. It will not impact anyone except the companies involved a little bit. The effect will die out very fast, it will not last forever.” Alekseev questioned, “And what is the aim of this boycott? The producers, even if they become bankrupt because of the boycott (which is unlikely), will not be able to influence Russian politics and President Putin as well as the decisions of the State Duma.” Stoli gave a statement to The Advocate, in which they said that “Stolichnaya Vodka has always been, and continues to be a fervent supporter and friend to the LGBT community.” The open letter went on to say, “We fully support and endorse

NATION Lesbian Couple Kicked Out of Cab For Being Gay Portland, OR – An Oregon lesbian couple was allegedly ditched on the side of a Portland highway around midnight due to their sexual orientation, according to The Oregonian. When Shanako M. Devoll showed partner Kate Neal some light affection, their cab driver began making homophobic comments. Devoll said, “I was holding her hand and we kissed a couple of times in the back seat, minding our own business. He made homophobic remarks that were very hurtful to us. We did not want to be in his cab.” The couple asked to get out of the cab in a safe spot, but the driver refused to comply with their wishes: He dropped off the couple and their friend on the side of Interstate 84, and radioed another driver to come pick them up. Once the second cab arrived, he told

Devoll, Neal, and their friend, to get in the cab, and they did. After some communication between the two cab drivers, the second driver asked the three of them to get out. Yet again, the three stood on the side of the freeway, eventually flagging down a police officer. According to Devoll and Neal, the police officer called the cab company, arranged for them not to pay the fare, and then drove all three of them home. “He did a great thing,” said Neal. Devoll said she believes that the cab driver should be reprimanded, and are currently exploring options with their attorney.
Desmond Tutu: “I Refuse to Go to a Homophobic Heaven” Cape Town, South Africa – On Friday, South Africa’s former archbishop, Desmond Tutu, told Agence France-Presse that he’d rather go to hell before going to a

homophobic heaven. Tutu said, “I would not worship a God who is homophobic and that is how deeply I feel about this.” According to AFP, he added “I would refuse to go to a homophobic heaven. No, I would say sorry, I mean I would much rather go to the other place.” The statements were made during the United Nations’ launch of their gay-rights campaign in Cape Town, South Africa. Like many others (including President Obama), Tutu also compared the struggle of equal rights for gays to the fight for equality amongst blacks. “I am as passionate about this campaign as I ever was about aprtheid,” said Tutu. “For me, it is at the same level.”
Pope Francis Changes his Tune on Homosexuality: “Who Am I to Judge?” Rome – On Monday, something monumental happened within the Catholic community: Pope Francis said he would not judge priests based on their sexual orientation. The comment is profound, considering the church’s long stance against homosexuality. According to various media outlets (NY Times, Washington Post, Huffington Post, etc.), while on a trip from Rio de Janeiro back to Rome, Francis told reporters, “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?”. The statement may come as a shock to many, as his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, wasn’t exactly welcoming to homosexual priests: After all, Benedict was the one to sign the 2005 document which kept gay men from becoming priests. Francis went on to tell reporters that “The tendency [to homosexuality] is not the problem … they’re our brothers,” and, “The catechism of the Catholic Church says clearly that we must not marginalize these people who should be integrated into society.”
While official decisions have yet to be announced by the Vatican, the Pope’s announcement marks a historical shift in the Catholic church’s opinion on homosexuality.
Louisiana Police Sting Targets, Arresting Gay Men for Sex using Unconstitutional Anti-Sodomy Law Baton Rouge, LA – The Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office is using an invalid, unconstitutional law to arrest adult gay men, according to a new report by the Baton Rouge Advocate. The report investigates the arrests of various gay men in Louisiana since 2011 who agreed to consensual sex with undercover officers. Each man was arrested under the state’s anti-sodomy law which was already ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2003. The state’s “Crime Against Nature” law may not be valid, but it’s still technically “on the books.” The Crime Against Nature law prohibits “unnatural carnal copulation by a human being with another of the same-sex or opposite-sex or with an animal.” Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks told the Baton Rouge Advocate, “this is a law that is currently on the Louisiana books, and the sheriff is charged with enforcing the laws passed by our Louisiana Legislature. Whether the law is valid is something for the courts to determine, but the sheriff will enforce the laws that are enacted.” However, the sheriff’s office seemed to change their tone Monday afternoon, releasing a statement/ apology that seemed to be a total 180: “While sections of La. R.S. 14:89, Crimes Against Nature, have not been removed from the Louisiana law code, they have been deemed unenforceable and unconstitutional. The Sheriff’s Office will not use these unconstitutional sections of the law in future cases.”

Wilton Manors, FL – The recent announcement for support of gay priests has received high praise (quite literally) by local LGBT churches. One organization in particular, Holy Angels National Catholic Church, is ecstatic. One of the priests of Holy Angels, released the following statement, exclusive to the Florida Agenda: “The statement by Pope Francis is a welcome blessing to gay priests, to the LGBT community, and to all who hope for a church that understands the hearts of its people. It is an echo of Vatican II which called for people to listen to their consciences. While the Pope did not place
his seal of approval on homosexuality, he did open the door to affirm the reality that it is possible to be both gay and Christian. The world would be happier if all would decide that it is not their place to judge the hearts of people: that is reserved to God alone.”
Tax Free is the Way to Be Wilton Manors, FL – This weekend, consumers everywhere will be taking advantage of the 2013 Florida Sales Tax Holiday. From August 2-4, Floridians will enjoy taxfree items in a number of establishments, including local retailers as well. Some of the community’s favorite local retailers have hopped on the bandwagon, including LeatherWerks and GayMart. The limit for the holiday is $750 per transaction (the limit ranges per state), leaving consumers with a sizable amount of cash saved. The sale covers virtually everything, from cloth-

he statements made by Pope Francis this week regarding gay priests has been blown out of proportion in so many ways. On a flight back to Rome from Brazil, Francis posed the following question to a plane full of reporters: “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” Before the Catholic church could say Hail Mary, the comment turned into one big giant story. Headlines popping up all over the web stating that the Pope was “OK with homosexuality” surely had some sort of impact on the world, but the Vatican isn’t exactly changing their doctrine anytime soon. The problem with the coverage of the flight, is that the press only centered on the homosexual context. That trip was an 80 minute flight: What else did he talk about? According to The Guardian, Fran-
cis also spoke on the issue of women’s ordination, stating that that door was “closed” for the time being, but that the church should find ways to boost women’s “role and charism [divinely bestowed gifts].” Francis also went on to speak on the Vatican bank, where Francis spoke of possibilities for its reform, expressing the bank needed to become “honest and transparent.” Unfortunately, both of these topics were buried by the articles on Francis’ gay priest comments, and are now seemingly lost in the shuffle. A writer for Fox News (who doubles as a priest), Fr. Jonathan Morris, wrote a particularly irritating article regarding the coverage of the story, titled “What Pope Francis really said about gays – and no, it’s not new.” Morris said, “As the Huffington Post put it: ‘Breakthrough: Pope OK with Gays.’ This is the worst coverage of a reli-
gious story I have seen to date.” The worst coverage to date? Huffington Post has since changed the headline, likely due to the backlash from bloggers like Morris. Morris went on to say “The Bible and the Catholic Church have never taught that it is a ‘sin’ to be homosexual. They teach it is a sin to have homosexual sex because it goes against the laws of God’s nature, specifically his plan for human sexuality.” So basically, if we’re celibate and gay, we’re safe, but if we have sex, we’re doomed? Because heterosexual couples only have sex to procreate....right? While he accused the press of reporting what they “wish they had heard,” Morris wrapped up his article on a positive note, stating that “active homosexuals deserve the same kindness, love, and mercy that all of us sinners would hope to receive from God and from others.” Now that’s something that we can agree on Mr. Morris.

culture needs to reassess priorities, create some rules, and understand the importance of physical and emotional boundaries. Women are warned about sexual predators, rapists, and what to do in these situations, but gay men are not a part of those conversations. It’s up to us to start having those conversations and understanding how these things are wrong, destructive, and hurtful to our culture. Gay people are not predators, but predators certainly exist within the culture. These are sick people. They are the same as straight rapists, and just as much of an anomaly. We have to stop being afraid of that old stigma, because for the most part, it’s on the way out. Homophobia has created a fear within us that any gay man being labeled a predator is as an attack on every gay man. These predators are attacking us, and we can’t just sweep it under the rug. Another issue stems from a gay male’s fear of appearing weak. If someone is
sexually assaulted, there is an intense fear that their masculinity is under attack, or God forbid, they themselves are weak. This causes ambivalence within the community on these issues. The greatest strength, though, comes from a moral conscience and understanding the damaging effects people may enact upon us. It is courageous to stand up for yourself and speak against abusive actions. It is not a sign of weakness. Weakness lies within predation. A gay man who does not respect someone’s space is looking for power in his powerless life. We need to have open dialogue about the damaging effects of these sexual predators. As a culture, we have come such a long way, but there’s still so much farther we can go. With so many other hurdles to overcome, the last thing we need to do is tacitly accept sexual abuse among our own people. We must protect ourselves from all assailants, straight or gay.
July 31, 2013 H 9
ne of the strange hurdles that gay culture continues to overcome is the idea that being a homosexual is akin to a sexual deviant. In the past, while being gay itself was seen as deviant, many people went on to believe that all gay men were predators: People to hide your kids from. Child molesters milling around in schools, parks, daycares, bathrooms, all for the sole purpose to molest. Of course, that wasn’t the case; gay people are just like everybody else. We, as a culture, fought so valiantly against such prejudices from the Anita Bryants of the world, that it has become taboo to even suggest such things are possible. Unfortunately, like every culture in the world, rapists and sexual criminals exist in ours as well. The problem? We don’t deal with it. Whenever the subject of male-on-male rape or sexual abuse comes up, many homosexuals I’ve talked to respond with ambivalence or, worse, strange blanket statements such as “Well, it’s different for men,” grossly suggesting that every gay man “wants it.” It seems that we have done a 180. So afraid to be lumped together as “deviants,” we turn a blind eye to unwanted sexual encounters that occur quite often. Recently, my friend – let’s call him Joe – experienced an unwanted sexual encounter. After a long workout, Joe took a shower at his gym. After soaping up, two men entered his stall and began fornicating in front of him. He asked them to stop, but they ignored him, so he exited the stall and entered another. The men followed. Joe was flabbergasted as the men continued their behavior. He left that stall, too, and entered a third, now just wanting to wash the soap off and leave. The manager of the gym came, called everyone out of the showers, and then revoked Joe’s membership—placing him in the same boat as the assailants. Many things are happening in this situation. An outraged heterosexual profiling the gay men, lumping Joe in with the
other “deviant” homosexuals; a victim is treated as the perpetrator; two gay men are acting as abusers, violating the boundaries of a younger man. The worse part: when Joe talked about this problem with other homosexual friends, they were either apathetic, or, insensitively asked if it was “hot”. It’s one thing to argue about the rights and wrongs of two men covertly and consensually fornicating in the showers. It’s illegal and inappropriate, but some may say it happens because of the lack of acceptance in the world and the ways in which anonymous sex might be the only form of sexual expression for many gay men. But for two men to do this in the boundary of someone else, and not respect his wishes? It’s criminal. Still, our culture turns a blind eye, and at times, promotes it. Last year, I met a person who was proud of having taken advantage of an unconscious gay man. The victim was passed out drunk, and this man raped him without the victim ever waking up. He explained, “it’s not really rape if the other person never knows.” It seemed to be a sense of power for him: a conquest— a moment in which he had done something truly masculine. My straight friends found it disgusting and repulsive, but my gay male friends didn’t even blink. They wondered if the rapist was “hot” and explained how gay culture is different, with different rules. Stunned, I wondered what exactly those “rules” were. It appeared to me that we didn’t have different rules. We had no rules. And this is really the overarching issue: Our culture is missing rules. It makes sense, being a culture that originally had to reject social order. Homosexuality itself was against the rules, so we felt more comfortable without any rules at all. The rules were for the heterosexual population who oppressed us. Everything’s changing now, though. We are not as oppressed as before. We are, out of nowhere, accepted. So there are changes that we need to make. The

Last Saturday, she once again broke new ground in a match against another openly gay athlete, Brazillian Jessica Andrade in Seattle. This match between two openly gay fighters was significant given the UFC’s history of being hostile towards gays. Carmouche was able to get her opponent to submit in the second round with a “ground and pound” technique (elbow strikes to the back of the head from a full mount). Since then, Carmouche (or “Girlrilla,” as she is known in the UFC) has been invited to several Pride Parades.

He wrestled throughout his teen years and although he doesn’t like labels, in retrospect, he knew he was gay. “I don’t really get into the labels because for me, I think that labels are a way to divide people. Metric: Because Sometimes Canadians Do It Better You may remember Metric from their first commercial appearance: Their song “Grow Up and Blow Away” was used in a TV spot for Polaroid I-Zone in 2000-2001. The instant photo film printed consumers a random fortune with each shot. In the quirky ad, a doe-eyed girl and a boy trade glances while each gets a different fortune from a quick snapshot: The man’s was something akin to “run,” while the woman’s informed her that he was “the one.” At the time, “Grow Up and Blow Away” was one of those “oh this is that awesome song from the ____ commercial” type of songs. They were recognized somewhat, but only seemed to capture an un-
derground fan-base. Over the years, the Canadian band added a few LPs to their resume, but it wasn’t until “Black Sheep” (from the movie “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”) was released that the band really gained an American audience. The band earned a younger, more mainstream audience from the contribution to the film (which was followed by a similar effort through a song provided exclusively for the soundtrack for “Twilight: Eclipse”), and their past two albums have taken a younger, catchier approach to their alternative new wave sound. See the rising Canadian stars in the historic, intimate Fillmore Miami Beach before they upgrade to arenas. 8:30 p.m. Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

The Jonas Brothers Are All Grown Up Often referred to as “modern-day Beatles,” the Jonas Brothers surprisingly dismiss the comparisons. When the title was first tossed around in 2008, the band took to their MySpace (on a side note, remember MySpace?) to address the issue, stating that while they were honored, they “definitely do not compare” themselves to The Beatles. However, the band did receive a very Beatles-esque reaction to their music and overall look, reinventing boy bands prior to the likes of One Direction and The Wanted. The brotherly trio has reunited after exploring solo projects (as well as fatherhood), and are now working on a follow-up album to their

Once upon a time, a Florida-born DJ/producer went from zero to Electronic Dance Music (EDM) hero, in a matter of a few short years. After founding his own LA based record label, Mad Decent, Diplo went on to sign artists like Baauer, Dillon Francis and Snoop Lion. Mad Decent has grown over the years, providing a healthy dose of dancehall and EDM artists, so it only seems natural that they would put together a touring showcase. The Fort Lauderdale Mad Decent Block Party boasts performances by Major Lazer (Diplo’s side project), Zeds Dead, Flosstradamus, Riff Raff and more. The block party

weakened organ, and voilà--we have our next victim. If you are already a host of prostate cancer, be sure to check with your doctor before taking any fish oil supplements or consuming fatty fish. If you are already eating fatty fish, try to cut back on your intake throughout the week. Servings should be 2-3oz portions two to three times a week. Fish oil supplements have especially heavy concentrations of the Omega 3s and these take awhile to break down in the body. These elevated daily levels of Omega 3 acids are very deleterious to prostate cancer patients. Don’t get me wrong, Omega 3’s are not bad for you. They are absolutely essential. What needs to be addressed is how much one should consume. Sedentary adults should keep eating fatty fish to a minimum, due to an inactive lifestyle. Average adults should combine eating fatty fish 2-3 times a week and fill in supplementation when foods are not available. Active adults can consume fatty fish 2-4 times a week and fill in supplementation when needed. Portions of fatty fish can increase to between 4-5oz. for active adults. Being aware of the effects that too little or too much of any one thing is never a bad idea, especially if you want to live to your optimum potential. Try to know all the facts before swallowing your next meal or downing your next supplement, or you too may fall victim to a false prophet. mega 3 fatty acids have gotten a lot of media coverage lately for all the potential ailments they may help cure. Touting its effects that it has on repairing the body, fighting inflammation, lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s as well as fighting heart disease. People of America have been rushing out to purchase and consume more fatty fishes, especially salmon and tuna, for the allnatural way to obtain the wonders of the Omega 3 acids. To no one’s surprise, fish oil liquid and capsule supplements have skyrocketed right along with the rise in fish sales. In America’s quest for better health, they forgot to look at all of the aspects that occur when Omega 3 acids are introduced into the body, especially in certain quantities. Little did they know that the latest research has shown that this complex fatty acid can do as much harm as help--particularly if you are a man. Recent studies have shown that Omega 3’s may be very beneficial to some organs of the body, and extremely detrimental to others. One of the biggest concerns in the latest studies seems to be with men’s prostate health. An increasing majority of the studies are showing that certain levels of Omega 3’s can tremendously increase your risk of prostate cancer. Given the heightened concern that men of a certain age are already feeling regarding their prostate health, this additional news is anything but welcome. Omega 3 fatty acids have been found to be more complex than originally thought. These complex acids have now been linked to increasing oxidative damage to the DNA within our cells. This kind of damage is the same one would find with excess stress, and provides a perfect breeding ground for cancers to grow. The prostate is an easy target for these cancerous cells as it enlarges as we age. Compound an overload of Omega 3 fatty acid to an already

REFRESHING IDEAS FOR SUMMER DRINKS
RECIPE
BY GEORGE DAUPHIN

ith all the new products coming from the major beverage companies, we tend to forget the homemade recipes that are just as good, very easy to mix and better for your health. Some are as simple as the old-fashioned lemonade on ice with a sprig of mint added. You can also add a slice or slices of ginger, depending on your tolerance for raw ginger. A star anise also gives the old lemonade or orangeade a different kick—usually one per glass will do. And, if you really want to layer the flavors, try half lemonade, half ginger ale and any combination of the aforementioned additions over lots of ice! That will definitely keep you cool through the hottest days. In fact, ginger ale is one item you should always keep handy in your fridge. It goes extremely well with iced tea (half of each infusion over ice cubes). You can also layer your drink— in a tall water glass, with about half an inch of grenadine syrup, then fill the glass three-quarters of the way up with a good ginger ale, then carefully top it off with a layer of natural orange juice. Watch the colors blend. Don’t forget that you can substitute any
of these soft drinks with seltzer or sparkling water for a healthier drink. You can make lots of refreshing drinks with seltzer. When I was a kid, mixing natural syrups with seltzer was always a preference over canned soft drinks. Just pack a glass with crushed ice, pour mint, tamarind or anise on the ice (quantity depending on your personal taste) and finish it off with some seltzer. For an adult version of any of these drinks, just substitute an appropriate liqueur in place of the syrup. Speaking of an adult drink, it may be time to bring back the Panaché (French), or the “Shandy” in the UK, a favorite of decades past. Half beer, half Seven-Up; add ice if you want. Remember— you are the chef—and drink responsibly!

sauce was superb. As with most items on the menu, the dish may be ordered a la carte or as part of Gourmet Dinner with vichyssoise, soup du jour, or salad maison, plus a dessert selection of either Apple Tart, Napoleon, Crème Caramel or Chocolate Cake for $18.95. Pay cash and eat before 6 and you can get the same meal as a Sunset Dinner for $15.95. We were equally as astounded by the aroma and flavor of the Rack of Lamb Provençal ($22.95)—typoed on the menu as Rack of Lamb Provencale. It’s a gorgeous French cut rack, oven roasted to perfection and presented drizzled with a herb sauce. Resist the urge to lick your plate on this dish. Les Amies also serves up delightfully fresh crepes—a rarity here in South Florida. We tried the mouthwatering Seafood Crepe ($14.95) with shrimp, scallops, and Swiss cheese in a lobster sauce that somehow managed to stay delicate on the outside while oozing with flavor internally. For fish lovers, you cannot go wrong with the Filet of Sole Meunière ($16.95). As legend has it, Filet of Sole Meunière was Julia Child’s first meal in France—one she described as “a morsel of perfection.” It’s served the same way at Les Amies, and will have you returning to sample more of the delightful cooking with the touch of France from longtime friends/ owners Diane Chamberland and MarieTherese Thomas. You’ll likely run into them working the crowded space, where reservations are a must. And, as always, remember to tell them Florida Agenda sent you.
LES AMIES 626 S FEDERAL HWY, DEERFIELD BEACH, FL 33441 954-480-6464
July 31, 2013 H 25
quashed into the south corner of Deerfield Square, on South Federal Highway in Deerfield Beach, is a new French restaurant called Les Amies—“friends” en français. As any of you who have traveled to the land of baguettes and the Tour d’Eiffel can attest, the local brasseries in France are picturesque tiny affairs, where the food competes for attention with the attitude delivered by the servers. In France, they are mostly older men, who have been waiters for decades, and, as a result, deign it their place to make you feel as unworthy of their attention as that horsefly that occasionally lands on your béchamel sauce. Les Amies shares some of those problems and overcomes others. First, the bad news. The restaurant itself is too small for the number of tables that are crammed into it, leaving diners touching elbow to elbow in a room that feels like the heat from the kitchen is winning the battle with the strained air conditioning system. It is a dark place, relying on several large ceiling chandeliers from a different decade, trying to bridge illumination with romance, and managing to succeed, but just barely. The real problem here is that the dark wooden blinds across the restaurant’s front window are closed, and the only other source of natural light—the glass front door—is covered with magnetic film. If you are a stranger to the restaurant, it is impossible to see inside from the parking lot, or get a sense of what delights reign within. And that is truly unfortunate, for there are many delights to be found at Les Amies. We absolutely marveled at the flavor notes in the Calf’s Liver Lyonnaise ($13.95)—typoed on the menu as Calves Liver Lyonnaise. The slightly pinkish thin slices of liver sautéed with onions and topped with a subtle raspberry

BALTIMORE The Charmed City

magine a city that counts among its present and former inhabitants cult director John Waters, baseball legend Babe Ruth, mystery writer Edgar Allan Poe, and blues singer Billie Holiday, and you get an instant feeling for Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland. More eccentric than cutting edge, Baltimore was once described by local bed and breakfast owner Barry Weiner as “like Martha Stewart, all dressed up but with a little lipstick still on her teeth.” Barry owns Scarborough Fair B&B (801 S Charles St at Montgomery St) with his partner Jeff Finlay. And like the city itself, Scarborough Fair is lovely, worldly, and just a bit strange. (What other B&B offers to give you trapeze lessons, for crying out loud?) It’s located in the center of the historic Federal Hill neighborhood of the city, where you can stroll through the charm of the City of Charm and pretend, even if it’s just for the moment, that you’ve stepped back in time to a gentler, more ro-

– Barry Weiner mantic time. We’d like to credit the four working fireplaces at Scarborough Fair, or the chocolate dipped strawberries and bubbly awaiting your indulgence, but in truth, it’s just a great and well-run homeaway-from-home that we suggest visiting even if you’re not staying there. F. Scott Fitzgerald lived right down the street with Zelda and daughter Scotty for five zany years, but not even the Fitzgeralds got to enjoy the housemade breakfasts that the Scarborough Fair serves daily. Picture lemon poppy seed waffles with limoncello sauce, Italian duck egg
frittatas with farmer’s market fresh zucchini, tomatoes, garlic, and lots and lots of cheeses. Check in and you won’t want to ever leave. For around $300 round-trip, flights from Fort Lauderdale to Baltimore are frequent and take a short two-hours and 30 minutes. And unlike Washington DC to the south and Philadelphia to the north, Baltimore is largely an undiscovered gem. The gay and lesbian community here is small enough to still be united and yet large enough to include a shape and size for the pickiest prude. Sooner or later, everyone who is anyone ends up at the Baltimore Museum of Art (10 Art Museum Dr). The museum is home to an internationally renowned collection of 19th-century, modern, and contemporary art. Imagine strolling between works by Monet, Picasso, Rembrandt, Rodin, Gainsborough, Van Dyck, Degas, Corot, Renoir, Pisarro, Matisse, Mondrian, Klee, and Kandinsky among others. In Baltimore—of all places. When it’s time to kick up your heels, or
don a pair, head on over to Club Hippo (1 W Eager St, don’t you love it). It is not only one of the oldest gay clubs in Baltimore, it’s ultimately the most fun, since there is absolutely no pretention anywhere near this happening joint. It’s in the center of Mount Vernon, the local gay Mecca. Perch yourself here, and then go sniffing around the neighboring bars. Just up the street from Club Hippo, you’ll discover Grand Central (10011003 N. Charles St), a club with something for everyone. Drag shows? Check. Dance floor? Check. Video bar? Check. Leather sleaze? Check. We dare you to try not to enjoy this place. Get a LGBT history lesson at Leons of Baltimore (870 Park Ave), a gay bar that’s been in business for over 55 years. In its latest incarnation, it’s become the preferred place for bears and their kind to exchange scents and rub bellies. And if that’s not exciting enough, they are now serving lunch, dinner and late night snacks in their Dining Room called Singer’s. It gives charm a whole new meaning.
