Condo Complex Doesn’t Allow Unmarried Gay Couples to Own Units Venice, FL – A Florida condominium association is refusing to let unmarried couples purchase homes (whether they are homosexual or heterosexual) after revealing new restrictions that blocks couples “living in sin” from living in the complex. The rules at the Venice condo complex, Casa Di Amici, state that any couple defined as being in a domestic partnership would not qualify to own a home in the community, reports WTSP-TV. Gay realtor Julia Nowak (who rents her Casa Di Amici condo out to her parents) was shocked to discover the new rules of the community. “I could not believe what I was reading,” said Nowak. “It basically says you have to be either a single person or a husband and a wife to purchase a unit here.” Nowak also states that the new rule excludes elderly couples who do not marry to save on social security. While many believe the discriminatory clause is illegal, an lawyer with the condo complex says that no laws are actually being broken, as the city of Sarasota County doesn’t have a human rights ordinance.

Kaitlyn Hunt’s Plea Deal Pulled by Prosecutors Vero Beach, FL – Kaitlyn Hunt’s fate is in the hands of a Florida judge after prosecutors pulled her plea deal upon discovering that Hunt exchanged approximately 20,000 text messages with her underage ex (the very same one she is being charged for sleeping with) during the brunt of her trial. Prosecutors state that Hunt violated a February court order to not contact the girl. In court documents, prosecutors say that Hunt gave the girl an iPod in February, which was used to receive and send the text messages between the two. Prosecutors also stated that 25 photos (including nudes) were also sent, and that secret meetings between the two occurred. The court papers claim that the most recent meeting between the two took place just two weeks ago. If convicted, Hunt could face up to 15 years in prison. BIG DEWITTE

LEGENDARY GAY RIGHTS ACTIVIST JOSE JULIO SARRIA DIES AT 91
N
ew York, NY – Gay rights activist Jose Julio Sarria passed away in his home in New Mexico Monday morning, reports GLAAD. A World War II veteran, Sarria was the very first openly gay candidate to run for public office in North America, running for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1961. Sarria’s candidacy inspired the LGBT community, who at the time, had no one speaking on their behalf. San Diego City Commissioner Nicole Murray Ramirez, a friend of Sarria’s stated “Jose Julio Sarria was indeed the Rosa Parks of the gay rights movement as an activist in the 1950s and 1960s.” Stuart Milk (nephew of Harvey Milk) has stepped forward, stating that Sarria’s passing is a significant moment in gay history. “Jose Sarria, Founder of the International Court System showed us how to turn a night into a grand occasion and a grand occasion into a means of providing support. That Support led so many who did not “fit in” to actually proudly stand out, together, José Sarria dining in creating a local sense of community Boston in 2010 and an international network that would raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for local and major cities. He paved the way for my uncle Harvey Milk to run for public office by being the first openly gay man to put his name on the 1961 ballot and was right there to support Harvey’s first campaign in 1973. Jose’s extraordinary life on this earth has come to an end. And the extraordinary good that he did lives on...We will forever keep Jose in our history books and in our hearts.”

Colorado Springs, CO – The head of the U.S. Olympic Committee has stated that he expects athletes to “comply with the laws” of Russia during the Winter Olympics in Sochi. This includes the law that bans adults from spreading any “gay propaganda” to Russian youth. Scott Blackmun, CEO of the committee, told Russian news source R-Sport, “The athletes are always going into countries with laws different than his or her own country. They’re going to agree with those laws in some days, they’re going to disagree with those laws in other ways. It’s our strong desire that our athletes comply with the laws of every nation that we visit. This law is no different.” The detail of the law is a little gray, with one Olympic spokeswoman stating that the law could pose a danger even to those simply holding hands. Another IOC official told LGBTQ Nation that the committee’s position has been “mischaracterized,” stating that athletes would not be punished for holding hands or wearing pride pins. Blackmun told R-Sport that the USOC is “looking to the [IOC] for some leadership on this issue,” adding, “They have been in discussions with the Russian authorities, so we’re awaiting some clarification from them.”

Governor Chris Christie Bans NHL Players Speak Out Gay Conversion Therapy Against Russia’s Anti-Gay Law Tysons Corner, VA – Two NHL players have spoken up on Russia’s “gay propaganda” ban, according to USA Today. Count Henrik Zetterberg, captain of the Detroit Red Wings, says that the law is “awful, just awful.” Zetterberg stated, “I think that everyone should be able to be themselves. It’s unbelievable that it can be this way in this time, especially in a big country like Russia.” Swedish player Victor Hedman, who plays for the Tampa Bay Lightning, has similar views on Russia’s stance on LGBT rights. “That’s completely wrong,” says Hedman. “We’re all humans. No one should have a say in what way you’re sexually oriented.” Both athletes are expected to participate in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Trenton, NJ – On Monday, New Jersey became the second state (California being the first) in the country to ban conversion therapy, a therapy which attempts to convert homosexuals into heterosexuals. In a letter released by Governor Chris Christie, he states, “The American Psychological Association has found that efforts to change sexual orientation can pose critical health risks including, but not limited to, depression, substance abuse, social withdrawal, decreased self-esteem and suicidal thoughts.” The Governor went on to say “I believe that exposing children to these health risks without clear evidence of benefits that outweigh these serious risks is not appropriate. Based upon this analysis, I sign this bill into law.”

ady Gaga’s “Applause” has been at war with Katy Perry’s “Roar” for the past week. Yes, this is what’’s making headlines on various LGBT news outlets. Though the two were speculated to have a secret rivalry going on, tweets from Gaga to Perry say otherwise: “Wanna grab some shovels and f**k up some hackers,” Gaga tweeted to Perry in response to the overwhelming amount of hackers attempting to ruin the release of their respective singles. Though Perry is currently ahead of Gaga on American charts, Gaga’s single is still performing well in over 50 countries. Unfortunately, Gaga’s twitter drama didn’t end there. The pop singer got into a heated argument with blogger Perez Hilton when she discovered that her oncefriend was looking for an apartment in her building. Long story short, they repeatedly dissed one another, and Hilton even received death threats (as well as some

ironic anti-gay slurs) from Gaga’s fans, appropriately called “Little Monsters.” The blogger and Gaga both posted statements on their websites to set the story straight. Hilton said, “If her fans want to send a message of support to Lady Gaga, they should buy her music,” while Gaga said “I
know how angry you feel sometimes, and I know that when they say things about me you feel that they are saying them about you as well. But music is about love, and is about sharing in the magic of theater.” The fight was squashed here (for now), and both celebrities will return to doing whatever it is they allegedly “do.” The “magic of theater” is an interesting choice of words for Gaga, who performed in various theatrical productions during high school herself. Personally speaking, I’ve always thought of Gaga as a bit of a phony. Does she stand for LGBT rights? Or is she merely cashing in on them? Madonna did the same thing in the 90s, and considering Gaga is essentially a modern-day version of Madge, it really wouldn’t surprise me. Her lyric video for “Applause” is simple, but effective. It’s just Gaga, hanging out in a bar, watching drag queens perform as she plays with a rainbow teddy bear. Though she has recently been active in LGBT rights, Gaga made it known very early on in her career that she was going to cash in on the gay community. At the 2009 MuchMusic Awards, Gaga won “International Video of the Year” for her single“Poker Face.” At the end of her speech, she said she’d like to thank “God and the gays.” The gays. The same year, she told Out Magazine, “I very much want to inject gay culture into the mainstream. It’s not an underground tool for me. It’s my whole life. So I always sort of joke the real motivation is to just turn the world gay.” Now wouldn’t that be a profitable market?

Michael Rajner Makes Waves with New Political Campaign
floridaagenda.com
BY GRANT JAMES
C
ommunity activist and Wilton Manors resident Michael Rajner is causing quite the controversy with his latest political campaign. While “Gidget for Wilton Manors Mayor 2014” may sound like traditional campaign, the catch is that Gidget is actually a dog. Rajner’s dog to be precise. The announcement of Gidget’s campaign is described by Rajner as “a way to voice frustration with humor,” sending “a bold message that we can do better as a community.” The political gag is making waves, but Rajner is running it on his own accord, and as such, is unrelated to any of the organizations or groups that he works with. I sat down with Rajner to talk about the controversial campaign, Mayor Resnick, and the talk of the town, Gidget. description of the city’s adopted tax equity reimbursement policy; however, the opinion piece was not surprisingly more about Resnick than the adopted policy. In a hidden short sentence, he did credit Vice Mayor Julie Carson for bringing the initiative forward. To be frank, I found it sad for Resnick to co-opt the success of the tax equity reimbursement policy that he didn’t champion. Resnick’s letter left the reader thinking Resnick was a champion behind enactment of the policy when in fact he attempted to water down or suggest the policy was not needed. If Resnick wants to be credited and thanked, he needs to put some real skin into the game and begin to step up and provide meaning leadership on issues affecting all Wilton Manors residents, a city that is the nation’s second largest growing gay Mecca and home to a significantly large number of people living with HIV/AIDS. Do you feel that Vice Mayor Julie Carson is doing a lot of the work for the local LGBT community? I am extremely proud of Vice Mayor Julie Carson’s leadership and the amazing support from Commissioner Tom Green and Scott Newton. Last year, I invited Vice Mayor Julie Carson to participate in an LGBT-public policy round table I helped organize with Equality Florida. Carson loved the concept and opportunity for a round table discussion to become more informed of initiatives sought at the local level of government. The policy initiatives she has sponsored this year, have stemmed from that round table meeting. Carson continues to think outside the box to champion the concerns and issues that are brought to her attention.
Rajner in front of Wilton Manors City Hall
Although Gidget is adorable, we’ve got to know — have you received any heat for this whole “campaign?” While I now have a dog in this race for Wilton Manors Mayor, the feedback has been incredibly positive. People are asking when lawn signs and bumper stickers are going to be available. One person did voice concern that this is going to divide the Wilton Manors LGBT community, but I see it differently. Just because Resnick is an openly-gay elected official, he doesn’t get a free pass from criticism. In fact, Resnick should have a greater duty and responsibility to lead on the issue of economic and social justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. I am not treating Resnick any different than any other elected official I have challenged for poor leadership on issues that uniquely affect our daily lives. Why Gidget and not you? Why not Gidget? Aside from her passion to hunt lizards in the yard and along walkways, she is approachable and stands for all the good that is possible in our quaint and diverse Island City. I haven’t completely ruled out running for public office one day, but right now I’m focused on working with my physician to improve on personal health outcomes. Speaking of you, you’re a busy, busy man. What are you working on at the moment?
Gidget
What about in the near future? I know you work with the schools a lot, which just resumed this week. As you stated, schools are back in session and I will be continuing to ensure our schools are inclusive and safe learning environments for all youth. At the moment I’m working on several legislative matters relating to the protections and rights of LGBT-people, and people living with HIV/AIDS, on both a local and national level. Any closing remarks or questions for Resnick? At Florida Atlantic University’s School of Social Work, I learned that when working to advance measures, it was important to set up elected officials with a “hero moment.” I would be one of the first people to thank Resnick. However, I think he’s the founder and president of his own fan club. If Resnick wants to be considered a champion for our community, he needs to work at it and begin to step forward with authentic leadership. Resnick has certainly climbed the ladder with the Florida and Broward League of Cities. In that climb, he has left LGBT-Floridians behind and without turning back to lend a hand to lift the very community he identifies from. At the time of print, Mayor Resnick has not responded.
August 21, 2013 H 9
Grant James: Tell us about the catalyst for your dog’s “campaign” for mayor. What exactly was your “last straw” moment with Mayor Gary Resnick? Michael Rajner: There is no doubt that the role of mayor in any city is demanding and requires a tremendous commitment. But quite frankly, I am fed up with Mayor Gary Resnick’s need to be spotlighted as the gay mayor and yet provide little, if any, leadership in the advancement of pro-equality measures for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Resnick may very well excel in other areas, but this certainly is not one. Just because you are an openly gay elected official, doesn’t inherently make you a pro-equality champion. Aside from the presentation of some non-binding proclamations demonstrating good and welfare, I don’t recall any notable initiatives during his long tenure in elected office. It truly is pathetic for him to have served in office for such a lengthy time and have so little to show in terms of success in the advancement of pro-equality public policy initiatives when more mainstream communities unanimously adopt pro-equality initiatives. Gidget, my nine pound Morkie, declared her candidacy for mayor after several people on and offline encouraged me to run for office. ‘Gidget for Wilton Manors Mayor 2014’ was a way to voice my frustration with humor and send a bold message that we can do better as a community and we have a right to demand authentic leadership. She is full of chutzpah and well known along Wilton Drive. I know you weren’t exactly thrilled with his open letter to the Sun-Sentinel stating benefits for employees with domestic benefits... Mayor Resnick did provide a wonderful

Local photographer Valyn Calhoun is an interesting person. His work usually features erotic portraits, and focuses on themes of homoeroticism, fetishism, nightlife and fashion, all highly stylized and eyecatching. For just over a month, a collection based on Valyn will be on exhibit at Boynton Beach’s ActivistArtistA Gallery. The exhibit will feature a series of self portraits as well as some portraits of Valyn taken by photographer Rita Baum. The promotional image, one of Baum’s portraits of Calhoun, is anything but ordinary, and has been causing quite a commotion, even within the artistic community. EXERCISE SPOTLIGHT
BUILDING MUSCLE: HIGH REPS OR LOW REPS?
Rob Delehanty demonstrates the Sit, Stand and Pull.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOBYSPHOTOS.COM.
This is an awesome exercise which works the legs, core, back, shoulders and arms! 1) Grabbing a pair of TRX straps, bend your knees to 90 degrees as if you were sitting. Your arms should be stretched out, maintaining resistance, with your back (spine) erect. 2) Next, pull yourself into a standing position, leaning slightly as shown, simultaneously opening your arms past shoulder width. Repeat the motion 10 to 12 times. Perform three sets. TIP OF THE WEEK Here’s a healthy, protein-rich breakfast that’s perfect for a Sunday morning when you crave traditional pancakes: SWEET POTATO PANCAKES Ingredients: • 150 grams (about 2 medium) mashed sweet potato • 1 scoop whey (I prefer vanilla) • 3 egg whites • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional) • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1/2 tsp nutmeg • 1 Tbsp cinnamon Directions: In a large bowl, mix all ingredients until smooth. Cook batches in pre-sprayed skillet/waffle maker on medium high temperature until bubbles form on the surface, then turn over and cook until dark golden brown. Serve with cinnamon and sugar-free syrup. Nutrition Per Serving (without walnuts): • Calories: 309 • Fat: 1g • Protein: 40g • Carbs: 35g Peter Jackson is a fitness and nutrition coach and the owner of Push Fitness and Club One CrossFit in Oakland Park. Q: I want to build muscle and gain size quickly. Should I be doing high reps or low reps? What’s the difference? –Eric C., Pompano Beach A: The short answer is this: low reps of 1 to 5 (in combination with explosive moves and longer rest periods of 1-3 minutes) are ideal for building strength and power while higher reps in the 8 to 12 range (in a faster-paced training regimen with shorter rest periods of 30 to 90 seconds between sets) are best for hypertrophy (muscle growth). Choose a weight that allows you to reach failure in each range. However, there’s much more to building muscle than how many reps you perform. The three critical factors are nutrition, rest and the volume of work performed in the gym — that is, the total number of sets multiplied by the total number of reps. High volume workouts have been proven by exercise scientists to release more of the anabolic hormones which are vital for muscle growth. So many guys at the gym complain about hitting a plateau and finding it difficult to make gains. The common reason is usually that they are doing the same familiar exercises in the same order with the same number of reps. The reason they can’t make gains is that their muscles have adapted to the routine and need to be “shocked” and “confused” in order to grow. Our muscles are made up of different fiber types which respond differently to stimulation, so the best approach is to constantly change not only intensity and volume levels but the exercises themselves, making sure the target muscle is worked from different angles. This style of training, called Periodization, has been scientifically proven to be effective in muscle gains. Your program in a given week might look like this: Workout #1: 6-8 reps, Workout #2: 8-10 reps and Workout #3: 10-12 reps. Again, for the lower rep ranges you will want to go heavy with the weights and progressively lighter with the higher repetition sets. Be sure to rotate through different exercises. Use this training protocol over a 12-week period, track your results and I’m sure you’ll experience the gains you are seeking.

his delicious, easy soup is loosely derived from the Russian and Ukrainian variations listed under traditional borscht. Who knew?? I made it last week ‘cause we had bought too many carrots, and other veggies including beetroot, for our juicing…and of course we weren’t juicing! Right says I, I’ll make a soup with that, and I did. OMG….Everyone LOVED it. • 4 big carrots • 2 beetroots • 1 big onion • Fresh rosemary or thyme • Good olive oil • Salt and pepper • Hot sauce Chop all the vegetables. Saute the onion in hot olive oil for 10 min or until golden brown, stirring often so that it doesn’t stick to the pan. Add the beetroots, carrots, fresh rosemary and the water and cook for about 20 or 30 min. Fish out the rosemary stalk. Blend and season to taste. I threw in a good splash of hot sauce. You are a chef!

pon walking into Sushi Rock, you know right away that you’ve stumbled upon something special. The restaurant definitely puts the “rock” in “Sushi Rock,” naming their speciality rolls, dishes, and deserts after famous rock stars and occasionally song titles (Elvis, Madonna, Red Hot Chili Pepper, Fiona Apple, “Feeling Hot Hot Hot,” etc). The space is the second ‘Sushi Rock’ location to open (the first is located on East Las Olas), and is significantly bigger than the first. While the Las Olas location is small and intimate, the Wilton Manors location is anything but that. With high ceilings, ample seating, and parking out front (a necessity for the drive), this restaurant can hold quite a big group of hungry sushi-goers. “The music they’re playing is old,” said a man seated near me (who on a side note likely retired around the time of President Nixon’s term). The song was Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” which was noticeably old. You should take note that the restaurant plays all sorts of rock (70s-90s mostly) to further fuel their ongoing theme of fusing together rock music and sushi. When I sat down, my server was over to take my drink order before I could say “sake.” She gave me some recommendations on chilled sake, which I went with based solely on the branding. The Aladdin sake ($15) bottle was exactly as I had pictured. It was light but flavorful, and came in a beautiful light blue “genie” bottle. The edamame tasted
like your standard edamame, or maybe I was just too hung up on the genie bottle to notice. At the table next to me, I heard one man proclaim, “The calamari was excellent, thank you.” I looked over to see that all three men were eating hot plates and no sushi. While I thought of it as a form of blasphemy, I guess it could be viewed as the restaurant having a diverse menu, with options for all walks of life. Tomato, potato. When my “Feeling Hot Hot Hot” ($15) arrived, I knew I was in love. It had a spicy habanero caviar on the outside, with spicy tuna on the inside. If you’re a true fan of spicy sushi, this is the roll for you. On a scale from 1-10 (10 being the hottest), I’d give it a solid 7. Next, I ordered the Tarantula roll ($12) which may not be a rock star roll by nature, but still rocks nonetheless. The Tarantula was made up of fried softshell crab, leaf lettuce, green apple and spicy mayo. Yes, green apple. You could barely taste it through the flavors of the spicy mayo and fried crab, but it definitely gave the dish a nice tartness and texture. To finish, I ordered the Fiona Apple ($8): Crispy little spring rolls, stuffed with an apple-raisin filling and topped with vanilla ice cream. It was fantastic and I will be back to eat all of its successors. The service was prompt and friendly. The sushi, fresh, creative and high quality. Get in there and try out this rock star menu. Make sure you tell them the Florida Agenda sent you.

house Gym (11740 San Jose Blvd) where the men of mass congregate when they’re not showing off their eight-packs on the dance floor at The Metro (849 Willow Branch Ave between Plum and Green) in its Disco Club. Now, here’s the deal. The Metro is actually seven clubs disguised as one, and the dance floor is just the beginning. On weekends, the Boiler Room hosts The Metro’s Dick Dancers, who take it off for tips. In Club Shadows, the fake fems do their impersonations. In the cleverly named Game Room, you’ll find pool tables, arcade and video games. For the more refined gentlemen, there’s the Rainbow Room, a intimate piano bar. Fresh air is a constant at the outdoor Tiki Bar, while Sapphos is The Metro’s very own women’s bar with a full authentically female revue. Don’t ya love it? The one-time Third Dimension 3D has simplified its name and its look. Now called In Cahoots (711 Edison Ave at Park St), the club has a different theme every night, Drag, hip hop, casino nights, and go-go girls should be enough to convince you to check in advance what’s going down. A word to the wise.

or far too many years, Jacksonville, FL, has been regarded by muscle gods and hairless twinks as the ugly step-sister to Fort Lauderdale. If you haven’t paid a visit up north to our conservative neighbor, it is time to go explore. You’ll find that the party is just revving up with new-found excitement thanks to the gentrification of the Riverside, Avondale and Marco neighborhoods, just teeming with gays and lesbians. Oh, all right, perhaps “teeming” is a bit of an oversell, but as Florida’s largest city, there is absolutely no shortage of sweetie-pies and those who like them. Located along the St. Johns River, the city of 1,300,000 is flourishing economically, with affordable housing, trendy restaurants, and some fine tourist attractions including our favorite the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens (829 Riverside Ave). The Cummer (gotta love that name) has a wide variety of European masters and American impressionists, to be sure. But head outside for the real show. The two-and-a-half acres of outside gardens
along the river are a cruising paradise for those in the know. The Jacksonville Municipal Stadium (1 Alltel Stadium Place) was only constructed in 1995, but has recently undergone a $63 million renovation. Among the additions are a 25,000-square-foot sports bar called the Bud Zone, and a 20,000-squarefoot Patio, as well as newly renovated clubs and suites. Adjacent to the stadium, on the old practice fields (used from 1995 through 2003) is a 400,000-square-foot entertainment zone known as the Pepsi Plaza. For Jaguars game days, this area includes tailgate cabanas for pregame hospitality, a corporate hospitality area, interactive games, and a stage for pregame and postgame entertainment. On our first trip to Jacksonville many years ago, we stayed in the now-defunct Heart of Jacksonville Motel, an absolute dive that served us well for many a onenight stand. We’ve upgraded these days, and highly recommend the Crowne Plaza Jacksonville Riverfront-Downtown (1201 Riverplace Blvd, on S. Main St.). It’s an extremely gay-friendly chain hotel
