SUNSHINE STATE Orlando Woman Attacked in Alleged Hate Crime An alleged rape on an Orlando woman outside of an LGBT nightclub Aug. 25 is being investigated by local authorities as an anti-gay hate crime. According to Fox News WFTV, the victim was walking home from popular LGBT nightclub Revolution at 2 a.m. in the morning when she reportedly stopped under an overpass to give change to a homeless man. The victim, whose name has not been released in the media, stated that a car then pulled up carrying three men and one of the occupants allegedly pushed her to the ground. The driver then allegedly raped her while making homophobic slurs. According to the incident report, she told investigators that the driver, and possibly another man, pushed her to the ground and raped her. The victim could not remember exactly where the attack happened.

“A lot of times, people are traumatized when something like this occurs, so their memory becomes narrow when it happens. But working with investigators to hopefully get some more memory recall from her, we may be able to pinpoint that location,” Sgt. Jim Young of the Orlando Police Department said. Officers say the victim’s injuries are consistent with her statements. She had scratches on her arms and a cut on her chin. “My sympathy goes out to her,” said Randy Stephens, Executive Director at the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center of Central Florida. The Center posted an alert on their website, warning everyone to be careful. “We are issuing statements to our members, through Facebook and social media, just reminding people,” said Stephens. “We got a holiday coming up. Be more aware of things that are out there.” He says he doesn’t blame the bar. “We don’t even know if she’s straight or gay,” said Stephens. “They [the attackers]

may do this to another woman, whether they be straight or gay.” Sgt. Young says if you’re alone at night, try not to walk alone. “Always walk in groups, be aware of your surroundings,” he said. Police say the three suspects are white men. The driver has short hair. He was wearing a black t-shirt and khaki shorts. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).

IRS Ruling to Help Florida Couples Legally Married in Other States The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the (IRS) today ruled that samesex couples, legally married in jurisdictions that recognize their marriages, will be treated as married for federal tax purposes. The ruling applies regardless of whether the couple lives in a jurisdiction that recognizes same-sex marriage or a jurisdiction that does not recognize samesex marriage. “For those of us who live in states that refuse to recognize our marriages, today’s news allows us to celebrate more deeply than we could following the Supreme Court striking down portions of DOMA,” commented Nadine Smith, Executive Director of Equality Florida. “The federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) not only denied legally married gay couples the benefits of marriage, it added insult to injury by demanding that we disavow our spouses and file our taxes as ‘single.’ Today we are no longer caught In the impossible situation of being told to lie about

our families while also being forbidden to perjure ourselves.” The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) also issued a statement today clarifying that gay spouses have equal access to skilled nursing facilities through Medicare Advantage. As of Thursday, private companies that contract with Medicare to cover services offered in a skilled nursing facility must provide equal coverage to all legally married couples, regardless of whether the state that they live in allows gay couples to marry. “We hope this is the beginning of the end of discrimination toward our families by every governmental institution in the country,” stated Smith.

Fort Lauderdale-based AutoNation to Insure Legally Married Couples Regardless of Sex The Fort Lauderdale-based AutoNation, with 21,000 employees at 256 franchises in 16 states, announced Thursday that beginning in January, 2014, it will insure all legally married spouses -- both samesex and opposite sex -- regardless of the laws of the state in which they reside. “AutoNation is leading the way as more and more companies grapple with the impact of disparate legal protections for their workforce from one state to the next.” According to Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida, the largest civil rights organization dedicated to Florida’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

New Jersey Senatorial Candidate Cory Booker Defends Gays Newark, NJ—Cory Booker, mayor of Newark, NJ, spoke out against rumors he is gay in a new Washington Post profile. Booker, who recently won the Democratic primary for a special upcoming Senate election, is 44 and unmarried and does not speak publicly about his personal life. But, the mayor tells the Washington Post that he doesn’t mind the gay rumors that have bubbled up from time to time during his political career: “...People who think I’m gay, some part of me thinks it’s wonderful. Because I want to challenge people on their homophobia. I love seeing on Twitter when someone says I’m gay, and I say, ‘So what does it matter if I am? So be it. I hope you are not voting for me because you are making the presumption that I’m straight.’?” This isn’t the first time “gay” and Booker’s name have appeared in the same sentence. His spokesperson declined to comment on Booker’s sexuality in the

past. And earlier this year a 1992 op-ed surfaced from his college newspaper, The Daily Stanford. In the piece, titled “Pointing the Finger at Gays,” Booker wrote about overcoming his own homophobia. Booker will face off against Republican Steve Lonegan to fill late senator Frank Lautenberg’s Senate seat on October 16. If elected, Booker will become New Jersey’s first African-American senator.

Wal-Mart Offers Same-Sex Domestic Benefits Bentonville, AR—While 64 percent of Fortune 500 companies offer its employees Domestic Same-Sex Insurance Benefits, many have announced the offering so quietly that even-now much of the public is unaware of the employment benefit. But when the world largest retailer, Wal-Mart, makes the move, the world embraced the changed with cheers across the globe. The Bentonville, Ark.-based retail giant sent postcards to its staffers on Monday outlining changes to their health insurance policies for 2014, including news that “full-time associates can cover any spouse or domestic partner,” regardless of gender. Walmart spokesperson Randy Hargrove stressed that offering healthcare to LGBT partners is “one piece” of the store chain’s updated benefits package, which includes a vision plan, 100% coverage for some

surgeries including hip replacement and incentives to quit smoking. The mega-retailer downplayed any cultural significant change the move played in its official announcement. “It’s a business decision, not a moral or political decision,” according to senior vice president of benefits Sally Welborn. “We operate in 50 states, hundreds of municipalities and Puerto Rico, and as clarified under the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), each of these states are developing different definitions of marriage, domestic partner, civil union, etc. By developing a single definition for all Walmart associates in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, we are able to ensure consistency for associates across our markets. The Affordable Care Act (commonly referred to as “ObamaCare”) inextricably linked health insurance with employment. As such, for our associates for whom we offer health insurance, we want to be sure we are providing access to as many individuals and their families as possible. Given the diverse world we live in today, a comprehensive benefit package that includes domestic partner benefits appeals to the contemporary workforce. Many companies, including most of our competitors, already offer spouse/partner benefits to their employees. Of 30 retail competitors, all but two (Publix and Stop and Shop union plan) provide either same—or opposite-sex—domestic partner coverage.

As Pat Robertson delved into a discussion about AIDS an episode of “The 700 Club,” which aired on August 27, the conservative evangelist suggested that HIV-infected individuals in cities like San Francisco purposefully infect others by cutting them with special rings. Robertson and co-host Terry Meeuwsen responded to a question from a viewer about the disclosure of an AIDS status. Apparently, the viewer had been driving a nursing home patient to church and came to find out he has AIDS. The viewer was angry no one disclosed the man’s health condition to her. According to the Huffington Post, he “used to think it was transmitted by saliva and other things, now they say it may be sexual contact.” So, he advised the woman to not have sex with the man. “There are laws now... I think the homosexual community has put these draconian laws on the books that prohibit people from discussing this particular affliction,” he continued. “You can tell somebody you had a heart attack, you can tell them they’ve got high blood pressure, but you can’t tell anybody you’ve got AIDS.” “You know what they do in San Francisco? Some in the gay community there, they want to get people. So if they got the stuff they’ll have a ring, you shake hands and the ring’s got a little thing where you cut your finger,” he said. “Really. It’s that kind of vicious stuff, which would be the equivalent of murder.” Right Wing Watch reported that particular comment from the broadcast was edited out of the clip the Christian Broadcasting Network later posted online. The Huffington Post could not immediately reach a CBN representative for comment. Back2Stonewall writer Will Kohl dubbed Robertson’s statements “the worst and most horrible lie that has come out of Pat Robertson’s mouth in his history of anti-gay hate.” He asked for supporters to call CBN headquarters and demand the network force Robertson to apologize for his “outrageous lies.” In an email to the Huffington Post, Kohl added, “It’s well past time that members

of not only the LGBT community but real Christians everywhere stand up to the anti-gay religious extremist like Robertson and say enough.” The fallacy-laden episode did not report that AIDS develops from the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which is transmitted via infected persons by blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, rectal fluids, vaginal fluids or breast milk, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These fluids must either come in contact with a mucous membrane or damaged tissue or be directly injected into the bloodstream for someone to be infected. In addition, the gay community has not put “draconian” laws on the books like the televangelist claimed. In fact, many states have partner-notification laws that make an HIV-positive person legally obligated to tell his or her partner or partners, according to AIDS.gov. In some states, the omission of this information could result in a criminal charge. Finally, HIV/ AIDS is not a “gay” thing. The diseases affect people of all races, genders, sexualities and creeds.

T

he Cheney family has their claws out this week. After speaking out against marriage equality last week, Liz Cheney experienced an intense backlash not only from the LGBT community, but from her sister as well. Liz’s statement read, “I am strongly pro-life and I am not progay marriage.” The statement came as a bit of a shock, as her sister, Mary Cheney, is openly gay, and has even received support from her father, good old Dick. Dick Cheney has even stated that gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry,

so what gives, Liz? Mary expressed her distaste for her sister’s views on marriage equality via Facebook on Friday, according to the New York Times. “For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage,” Cheney wrote. “Freedom means freedom for everyone,” she added. “That means that all families – regardless of how they look or how they are made – all families are entitled to the same rights, privileges and protections as every other.” Yikes. Verbally sparring online is expected in this day and age, mostly due to the accessibility and obsession with social media outlets. We know Cheney is human, so it’s understandable that she would take to Facebook to address a problem. Hell, even Lance Bass took to Twitter this week to announce his engagement. Bass tweeted an emphatic “He said YES!!” to followers, followed by “Love this man.” Social media was once a private place to speak and with friends and share information and updates with a tight-knit group. Now that personal privacy is gone, especially for celebrities, though they seem to have done it to them-

selves. Celebrities, politicians and major corporations use Facebook to advertise and promote their own personal brand, in lieu of print. I know you’re thinking that it was inevitable, but that doesn’t make it any less of a shame. The Cheney family’s issues are now front and center, for all of the world to see, but don’t feel bad for them, feel bad for all of us. After all, it was Mary Cheney who addressed the issue on Facebook instead of speaking to a publication. While Liz Cheney’s stance on marriage equality is likely just for “politics” in anticipation of her run for the Senate in 2014 (Wyoming), Mary Cheney isn’t exactly doing the world any favors by being a Chatty Cathy on Facebook. She could have just as easily made a statement to a major news outlet, especially as the daughter of a former vice president. Sophocles once said, “Foolishness is indeed the sister of wickedness,” and boy was he right. Hopefully they make amends before the holiday season. If not, I foresee a new reality show on E! premiering in 2014. “Keeping Up with the Cheneys” anyone?

An Interview with Rich Morel of Deathfix BY GREGG SHAPIRO

G

ay musician, DJ and remixer Rich Morel gets around. He is a fixture in the queer music scene via his recordings of original material (including Queen of the Highway and Lucky Strike) as well as the remixes he does as Morel and Pink Noise. As one half of the in-demand club DJ duo Blowoff (along with out musician Bob Mould), Morel is an expert at packing the dancefloor. Deathfix, his latest effort, is a collaboration quartet also featuring Brendan Canty of Fugazi fame. The bands eponymous debut is a pleasant mix of post-rock experimentation and retro-pop updates, not to mention that the disc’s irresistibly funky centerpiece “Dali’s House” is as addictive as music gets. I spoke with Morel about Deathfix, his other projects, The Beach Boys and Salvador Dali.

(front to back): Jerry Busher, Rich Morel, Brendan Canty and Mark Cisneros

Rich Morel: I definitely do see this progression of what I was doing. But my collaboration with Brendan (Canty) unfolded and opened up a whole other, at least for me artistically, the two of us working together on the writing of the song, a whole other direction. More live, more spontaneous; which is in effect a further development of the rock aspects of what I was doing. But that fruition came from working with Brendan, Mark (Ocampo) and Devin (Cisneros) on the record and playing live; that really made everything explode into its own place. Did you ever imagine, being a longtime DC resident, that there would come a day that you would be a part of a band releasing an album on the city’s legendary indie punk label Dischord?

For your fans who might only know you through your Blowoff DJ dates with Bob Mould or your Pink Noise remixes, how do suggest that they approach the Deathfix disc? That’s a hard question because when I approach music it’s never so genre specific. I always hope that most people would approach music the same way. If you do approach music under the pretense that this is a genre I like, this is a genre I don’t like, you close off a lot of great music. I would say approach it like the songwriting is the center of what Deathfix is about, just as the songwriting is the center of what Erasure is about. Once you hear it on that level you either love it or not [laughs]. Songwriting is the center of every record may. That would be my

advice, listen to the songs, listen to the musicianship and hopefully you’re going to dig it. I think my favorite track on the album is “Dali’s House,” the funk rock centerpiece of the disc. The song sounds like an homage to Arthur Russell. Is Arthur someone that you consider to be an influence? I like him. It’s great that you hear that, but that actually wasn’t something I was thinking about. But that’s great. That works for me [laughs].

Continued on page 20

September 4, 2013 H 9

I didn’t, but how awesome is that [laughs]. I’ve known Brendan for years and I had met Ian (MacKaye of Dischord and the band Fugazi) because I was in DC working. I have so much respect for the label and all the people who’ve been on the label that, for me, it’s really a thrill. It’s great working with those guys and it’s really exciting.

MARTINA FORNACE

Gregg Shapiro: Deathfix feels like the next logical musical progression following the albums you released under the Morel moniker on which you explored aspects of rock music. Do you also see it that way?

COVER STORY

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO CHASE YOUR DREAM At Age 64, Gay Swimmer Diana Nyad Successfully Swims the 103 Miles from Cuba to Florida BY RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

September 4, 2013 H 10

WALTER MICHOT

D

iana Nyad achieved her lifelong dream Monday when she emerged exhausted, swollen, and triumphant after having spent nearly 53 hours swimming from Havana, Cuba, to Key West, Florida, breaking multiple records along the way. The 64-year-old Nyad swam up to the beach just before 2 p.m. EDT, surrounded by dozens of spectators who, despite their best intensions of encouraging her achievement, nearly succeeded in scuttling her triumph by blocking her way. When she finally was cleared to emerge from the Straits of Florida on to the beach in Key West, she appeared dazed and sunburnt as she spoke to her fans in a scene televised worldwide. “I have three messages,” Nyad said, her speech slurred because of bruises caused by a mask she wore to prevent jellyfish bites to her face and tongue. “One is, we should never, ever give up. Two is, you’re never too old to chase your dream. Three is, it looks like a solitary sport, but it is a team [effort],” she added, embracing some of the 35 members of her crew who accompanied her the entire journey in boats, kayacks and scuba gear. It was Nyad’s fifth attempt at the achievement in 35 years, and her fourth since turning 60. She was inspired to swim the Straits of Florida during a pre-Castro visit to Cuba as an eight-year old child. An open lesbian, Nyad was born in New York City in 1949. After the death of her father when she was three, Nyad’s mother Lucy married a Greek land developer named Aristotle Nyad who later adopted the young child and moved the family to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It was here while attending the private Pine Crest School that Nyad began her love of swimming, and won three Florida state championships in the backstroke at 100 and 200 yards. A bout with endocarditis squelched any hope she harbored to compete in the 1967 Olympics, yet she continued competing setting world records in the process. After graduating from Pine Crest School that year, she entered Emory University, only to be eventually expelled when she jumped out a fourth-floor dormitory window wearing a parachute. She subsequently enrolled at Lake Forest College in Illinois, where she played tennis and resumed swimming, concentrating on distance events. She soon came

to the attention of Buck Dawson, director of the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, who introduced her to marathon swimming. Nyad first attempt at swimming from Cuba to Florida took place in 1978 at the age of 28, soon after the Kennedy-era travel restrictions to Cuba were lifted. But at that time, she was encased in a 20 by 40 foot shark cage for protection, and was removed from the water after 42 hours of swimming when her team doctors determined that eight-foot swells were knocking her off course. Nyad make three other attempts in as many years after reaching the age of 60—all without the benefit of a shark cage or swim fins, and each destined to failure due to high wave conditions, attacks by jellyfish and an asthma attack. When asked her motivation at that time, she replied, “Because I’d like to prove to the other 60-yearolds that it is never too late to start your dreams.” While her successful fifth attempt ended in glory and multiple accolades, Diana Nyad is no recent arrival to fame. She is the author of three successful books, Other Shores (Random House: September 1978) about her life and distance swimming, Basic Training for Women (Harmony Books: 1981), and a biography of NFL widereceiver Boss of Me: The Keyshawn Johnson Story (1999).

She has also written for The New York Times, Newsweek magazine, and other publications. Diana and longtime friend Bonnie Stoll (former number three in the world on the Pro Racquetball Tour) own a company called BravaBody aimed at providing online exercise advice to women over 40, with the two world-class athletes giving direct inspiration and custom-made work-outs. She is also a motivational speaker and has been a reporter and commentator for NPR. “I have to say, I’m a little bit out of it right now,” Nyad told USA Today, after the completion of her record-breaking swim, while pointing to your swollen lips. She was taken to a waiting stretcher on the beach and received IV hydration and carbohydrates. “I just want to get out of the sun,” she said. Speaking on the scene to CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Nyad said, ““It was really rough that first day, Saturday, after the start and I just said: ‘Forget about the surface up. Get your hands in somehow, and with your left hand, say, push Cuba back, and push Florida towards you,’” Nyad said. Through it all, she held her mantra close: “You don’t like it. It’s not doing well. Find a way.” Diana Nyad found her way, and lived her dream. “It’s never too late. Ever.”

Zedd: Meet Lady Gaga’s New Producer Friday, September 6 at the Fillmore

THURSDAY 9/5

Winners at Stonewall Museum The mission of the “Winners” exhibit, is to “preserve, interpret and share the heritage of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community,” according to Stonewall National Museum’s official site. Funded by the Broward Board of County Commissions, the Florida Cultural Division, Comcast, Sidelines, the Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, Bitner Goodman, Peter Jackson, and the museum itself, there is a lot of support behind this exhibit. “Winners” covers the history of gay sports and athletes in America,

nicely complimenting their Gay Games exhibit, which is running simultaneously. Highlighting athletes such as Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, Dave Kopay, Brucey Hayes, and plenty more, the exhibit focuses on a few of those “who dares to be different and to make a difference.” For more information visit stonewallnationalmuseum.org. Open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Stonewall National Museum & Archives. 1300 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

FRIDAY 9/6

Zedd: Meet Lady Gaga’s New Producer German electronic producer Zedd spins everything from progressive house to dubstep. Signed to Skrillex’s label, OWSLA, he

gained notoriety after remixing Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” and “Marry the Night,” both of which appeared on the special edition of her last album, “Born This Way.” After recently releasing his debut studio album last year, “Clarity,” Zedd was invited back to work with Gaga, this time on a more personal level. Zedd is producing majority of the singer’s upcoming album (“ARTPOP”), which, at times is very conceptual. When speaking of “ARTPOP,” Zedd says, “There was one song that started from her just giving me, like, ten words to describe an emotion, and then I had to make this into music.” Gaga has said that she’s much happier writing this album than she was with other albums, describing “ARTPOP” as “her first real album.” 8 p.m. Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

The Ramrod is celebrating two anniversaries this weekend: Pig Dance’s 5 year anniversary and the bar’s 19 year anniversary. Saturday Night’s Pig Dance has been going on for five years year, which is essentially South Florida’s filthiest monthly party (we mean that in a good way). You can always expect the unexpected at Ramrod, and Pig Dance is no exception. On Sunday, celebrate the bar’s 19th anniversary, with $1,000 giveaways in cash and prizes. If you’re looking for a dark and dancy weekend, this is your stop. Ramrod. 1508 NE 4th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

John Mayer: Everybody’s Guilty Pleasure

2nd Annual Classic Film Festival

John Mayer is one of those guys that everyone loves to hate. He’s talented, he has a sense of humor, and he’s attractive. But let’s face it, the guy has balls. At times, his genitals are even the topic of conversation, like in his 2010 Playboy interview. When asked if black women throw themselves at him, Mayer responded, “I don’t think I open myself to it. My d**k is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a f****n’ David Duke c**k.” Charming, no? Even though Mayer is the guilty pleasure of millions of women around the world, he’s recently been tied down by girlfriend Katy Perry. Gossip sites are even saying that the two might wed, but in Hollywood nothing is certain (just look at Perry’s now nonexistent marriage to comedian Russel Brand). Mayer is touring in support of his newest album, “Paradise Valley.” 7 p.m. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601 Sansburys Way, West Palm Beach, 33411.

Gateway Theatre is hosting their 2nd Annual Classic Film Festival this month – until the 26th – where moviegoers can enjoy their favorite classics in the space and comfort of a movie theater. The festival boasts titles such as “Tootsie,” “Dr. Strangelove,” “The Graduate,” “The Way We Were,” “It’s A Wonderful Life,” and “Young Frankenstein” to name a few. The festival reminds people that classics will always be classics, regardless of the year they were originally released. A portion of the ticket sales will benefit the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund, a McCormick Foundation fund that is committed to supporting programs that move low-income children and families to self-sufficiency. On this particular night, September 9, the theater will be showing “Band Wagon” at 1 p.m., “Tootsie” at 4 p.m., and “All About Eve” at 7:30 p.m. Gateway Theatre. 1820 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

ASK THE FITNESS MAN By PETER JACKSON, CPT HOW TO BUILD BROAD SHOULDERS Q: I’ve been told that working the shoulder muscles isn’t really necessary as those muscles are worked in the course of building other muscles like the back and chest. I’m starting to doubt that as my chest is looking really good but my shoulders haven’t grown at all. Any suggestions? A: Big, broad shoulders on a man are a beautiful thing. They complement the arms, chest and back and punctuate a well-developed upper body. While appearances are important, there are two reasons why strengthening the shoulder muscles is so important: 1) It’s the best defense we have to preventing painful, often debilitating injuries to the shoulder joint including dislocation or, worse, a torn rotator cuff; and 2) The shoulder muscles assist in most exercises for your chest, back and arms; consequently weak shoulders mean those muscle groups won’t reach their full potential. The deltoid (musculus deltoideus) plays a critical role in building strong shoulder muscles. This is the large triangular muscle covering the shoulder joint which allows movement, extension and rotation of the arm. It’s made up of three sections – the front, middle and rear deltoid. Also critical to improving your shoulder strength is working the upper traps (trapezius), located between the neck and shoulders. The Shoulder Press is, hands-down, the best exercise to develop the front and middle delts as well as the traps.

HEALTH

Avoid this exercise, however, if you are experiencing any shoulder pain! My recommendation is to restrict overhead pressing exercises such as the Shoulder Press to just one or two per workout and instead utilize Cable or Dumbbell Flyes, Lateral Raises, Shrugs and other exercises to avoid putting too much stress on the shoulder joints. Here are two of my favorite exercises to help build big, strong shoulders. Ask a personal trainer at your gym or training facility to recommend others. SIDE-LYING LATERAL RAISE: Lie on your left side on an incline bench with a dumbbell in your right hand and your palm facing your thigh. Without bending your elbow, raise your arm until it’s in line with your shoulder as your rotate your palm outward. CUBAN PRESS: Hold a pair of dumbbells at right angles above your shoulders, palms facing forward. Next, rotate your arms down so that your palms face the floor. Return to the starting position and lift your arms above your head. Repeat from the beginning. Awesome exercise! TIP OF THE WEEK How much water should you drink? Despite the heat of summer and the increase in outdoor activities, the majority of us are not drinking enough water! Needs vary between individuals, but a good rule of thumb is to divide your bodyweight by 2 and drink that number in ounces. That means a person who weighs 150 pounds should drink roughly 75 ounces of water (about 4 standard bottles) while a 200-pound individual should consume about 100 ounces (approximately six bottles of water).

SUPERMAN CABLE CURL

Here’s a great way to build your biceps. 1) Stand between the weight stacks of a cable crossover station and grab a high pulley in each hand. Hold your arms out to the side so they are parallel to the floor but slightly bend. 2) Without moving your upper arms, curls your hands uniformly toward your head. 3) Slowly straighten Push Fitness client Mark LaFontaine demonstrates the Superman Cable Curl. your arms and repeat. Heat oil in heavy assed large saucepan over medium-high heat. Working in batches, brown the shanks until brown on all sides, about 8 minutes. Then set shanks aside to a plate. Add onions, carrots and garlic to the pot and saute until golden brown, about 10 minutes. Stir in the wine, bouquet garni, tomatoes, and chicken broth. Return shanks to pot, pressing down to submerge. Bring

Instantly Addictive: An Interview with Rich Morel of Deathfix Continued from page 9

There is a wonderful list of people who are name-checked in the song. What was involved in the compiling of the names? I had just jotted the idea of being somebody’s house on my phone. I keep little notes in my text documents on my phone whenever I have an idea that I think might make a cool song. The idea of being somebody’s house instead of actually being the person, I like the metaphor of being what holds them or represents them in a structural way. The list came about with me and Brendan brainstorming about people we really like [laughs]. When the lyric was expanded, it was like, why do I like this person? I would expand it a little more and sometimes it would just be the person’s name. I like the surreal aspect of it being (Salvador) Dali’s house because everything is randomly juxtaposed. This is a song version of the Exquisite Corpse. The idea of the song being the things that are not intrinsically related but they will become related once the bass-line is there [laughs].

September 4, 2013 H 20

The sheer variety on the disc, including the prog rock of “Mind Control,” the `70s-inspired pop of “Better Than Bad” and the pretty psychedelia of “Low Lying Dreams,” is made all the more amazing by there being only seven tracks on the whole album. Is there one style more than the others that is the truest reflection of your personal aesthetic? It’s hard, because in the process of getting to what is the album, there was so much contribution by all four members. I think my personal aesthetic is definitely there in the lyrical way. On the text of the record you definitely hear my personal aesthetic. Musically, obviously “Dali’s House” is something that comes from an aesthetic I’ve been exploring forever, since I’ve been doing music. But “Low Lying Dreams” is another one that I would think is in line with where I sit musically. “Playboy,” which has Beach Boys references and almost jam references as well, is a good example of

everybody coming together and creating something that’s bigger than the original concept. That’s the best, too, when everybody works together in sync to create something original and fresh. That’s why I love collaboration. Because you get this other that you just can’t get with one person. There are awesome records that are solo projects that are great, but as an artist it’s always exciting to collaborate because somebody throws something else out there and you’re just like, “Wow” [laughs]! It takes it to a whole new place, which is great. Speaking of collaboration, you recently produced Tom Goss’s track, “Bears.” [Laughs] Yes, I did. It’s kind of a leap for him, because I don’t think of him as a dance artist... No, he’s not. We’re friends in DC. I’ve known him in DC and we have a lot of mutual friends. He approached me and said that he had an idea for a song and asked if I’d be interested in doing it. I love Tom. He’s the sweetest guy on the planet. That’s all there was to it. Is it a song that you would work into rotation in your Blowoff dates? I’m actually working on a remix of it that would be more suited for club play. Deathfix is heading out on tour again. What do you like best about that experience? I love playing live. I love the immediate connection with an audience. One of the things with Deathfix is that live we’re not a rigid band. We’re very fluid. There are a number of points in the set where we jam and explore different ideas. That’s one of the things that’s most exciting for me.

TRAVEL

AUSTIN, TEXAS

E

very Friday night from 5 p.m to 8 p.m., the men who like to eat come out for Rose’s free buffet at Oilcan Harry’s (211 W 4th St at Lavaca). It’s a rather lavish spread appropriate for the most popular club in all of Gay Austin, otherwise known as Bat City for the number of the flying mammals visible in the sky at dusk. Oilcans is in the Warehouse District, which is hardly Austin’s my attractive section. Tbe Warehouse District does reinforce Austin’s reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World with the “Austin City Limits” television show live at the Moody Theater (310 W Willie Nelson Blvd.). Music, in fact, is everywhere in this town—beginning at the airline terminal as you deplane in Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), named after Captain John August Earl Bergstrom, an officer who served with the 19th Bom-

bardment Group, one of the 15 original combat air groups formed by the Army before World War II. You’ll discover combos playing at Whole Foods Market, outdoors at the Blues on the Green (Zilker Park Rock Island,2100 Barton Springs Rd.) series, the South by Southwest Music Festival, as well as any number of other clubs, coffeehouses, bars, taquerias, auditoriums and concert halls. And this coming weekend, music will hold forth in the grandest gay tradition as Austin celebrates Gay Pride 2013 at the Fiesta Gardens (2101 Jesse E Segovia St). The theme is “Love Unites!” with performers Andy Bell and Crystal Waters joining other entertainers as well as 120 vendors along the shores of Lady Bird Lake. Two hours later the Pride Parade launches from in front of the State Capitol Building (112 E 11th St). The capital city of Texas boasts many

fine hotels as you might expect, but none capture the history of the place quite like the Driskill Hotel (604 Brazos St). It was originally built in 1896 as the home of cattle baron Jesse Driskill, and boasts 188 magnificent rooms and suites, close to the Austin Convention Center and the Long Center for the Arts. When it’s time to head out into the night, the gays play all over town. Rain (217B W 4th St) is located adjacent to Oilcan Harry’s and is known for its live combos and teeming dance floor. Up the street at Chain Drive (504 Willow St at Red River St.) is the closest thing this town has to a leather bar. Unlike most leather bars, however, this one does not depend on bears for its clientele. Here, the patrons are young, lacking much in the way of gear, and mainly interested in the music. (Yes, there’s that word again.)

No visit to Austin is complete without at least one stop at the Jackalope (404 E 6th St between Trinity St & Neches St). Not only do they have the best waffle fries in town, but sit in the back of the joint and get to watch foreign horror movies with subtitles for free. A dive bar meets the drive in. For those who rely on old bar lists, beware of venturing toward the old Red Room (219 W 4th St). It used to have a pretty cool reputation as one the best gay handouts in town. But the place was sold within the last two months and the new owner not only discourages gay business, he is only hostile to gays who dare to cross its boundaries. Please try to control the urge to pee on the front door and leave your scent. Take it down the street to Oilcan Harry’s, which likes those things… and more.
