COVER STORY

KEN KEECHL:

“There Isn’t a Better Job in the World” BY GRANT JAMES

K

en Keechl recently announced his campaign for Broward County Commission, District 4. Hosted by George Castrataro, Keechl’s recent fundraiser at Dapur was a great success. Keechl touched on his run in an email prior to the fundraiser, citing some competition: “..After the 2012 redistricting by the Broward County Commission, District 4 is once again a Democratic seat. As a result, another Democrat has filed for the Democratic nomination. I would be honored if you would attend my first fundraiser and support my efforts to win the Democratic nomination.” I recently spoke to Ken about his run for the seat, his upbringing, and whether or not he thinks being openly-gay affects the voting process. What was your upbringing like? What made you decide to get involved in politics? I grew up without a lot of money. My parents married very young and I was the first person in my family to go to college. I can vividly remember wanting to go to college so badly but being fearful that I couldn’t afford to go. It was 1980 and President Reagan was in office. He was bound and determined to cut financial aid to college students – even loans! With several scholarships, mutiple jobs and a few small loans, I obtained my B.A. with honors in history in 1984, and graduated from law school with honors in 1987. After that, I knew that I would be a lifelong Democrat like my parents.

Photos are from a campaign fundraiser for Ken Keechl (left) held last week at Dapur restaurant. Those who were there to show their support include Ted Adcock (right), as well as (bottom photos) Michael Rajner, George Castrataro and Tom Green. Photos by Big Dewitte

I know that your recent fundraiser was a great success. Who are some of your current supporters? The support was overwhelming to say the least! Some of my supporters include Broward Sheriff Scott Israel, Wilton Manors City Commissioner Tom Green, Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Dean Trantalis; and former Oakland Park Mayor Suzanne Boisvenue. Because I was the President of the Dolphin Dems in 2005 and 2006, it was great to see so many [Dolphin Dems] at the fundraising kickoff including former Presidents Commissioner Dean Trantalis and Michael Albetta, current President Tim Ross, and community activists like Michael Rajner and Terry Scott.

September 11, 2013 H 6

What makes this run different than previous runs? What do you plan on bringing to the table this term? I was proud to break new ground and be the first openly GLBT County Commissioner in Florida’s history and the first openly GLBT County Mayor in Florida’s history. But just as important to me was watching your tax dollars carefully, protecting the environment, and being an advocate for those in Broward who need government to help them rather than ignore them.

People in Tallahassee have been calling me for months, asking me to run for the state House or state Senate. I declined because I loved being on the County Commission. There isn’t a better job in the world. It’s a great time to be an openly-gay politician or public figure. We’ve come a long way. Do you believe that being openly-gay no longer affects the voting process? It could actually help. The only homophobia I experienced while in office from 2006-2010 was with

the media. The voters and my constituents couldn’t care less. Unfortunately, the County Commission redrew all nine commission seats last year. My former seat, District 4, no longer includes Wilton Manors, but ironically has now has 10,000 more Democrats than Republicans. With a good Democrat candidate running for Governor, this is the perfect time for a Democrat to win this seat back. I think I’m that person. So, I’ll be focusing on the cities within my District, especially Oakland Park, Fort. Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach.

Fox Fires Antigay Sports Broadcaster New York, NY – Broadcaster Craig James will not be returning to Fox’s fall lineup of football commentators, due to antigay statements made in the past. James made the comments during a 2012 campaign for the U.S. Senate in Texas, where he took jabs at his opponent for marching in a gay pride parade. “I think right now in this country, our moral fiber is sliding down a slope that is going to be hard to stop if we don’t stand up with leaders who don’t go ride in gay parades,” James said, according to keranews.org (part of NPR’s digital network). James went on to say, “I think that you have to make that choice. But in that case right there, they are going to have to answer to the Lord for their actions. We should not give benefits to those civil unions.” Fox Sports Southwest told Dallas Morning News that their offer was rescinded, citing his antigay remarks as the cause. “We just asked ourselves

Santa Fe, NM – The New Mexico Supreme Court will hear a case on October 23 to decide on whether or not the state’s constitution allows same-sex couples to marry. According to NBC, the state’s court agreed to hear arguments on October 23 from six same-sex couples that are represented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights. Since August, a number of county clerks have issued marriage licenses to LGBT couples in New Mexico. A Santa Fe district judge recently ruled that the state’s constitution does not prevent same-sex couples from getting married, providing additional hope for the state’s LGBT community. If legalized, New Mexico will become the 14th state to legalize same-sex marriage.

Sacramento, CA – Assembly Bill 1121, aimed at providind transgender California residents with an easier way to change names and gender markers on birth certificates, passed in a vote of 56-18 on Friday. Though the bill was passed by the California State Legislature, the bill still has be to signed by Gov. Jerry Brown. If signed, the bill would provide an easier, cheaper process to change names to correspond with gender identities. Drafted by Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins, the bill would also reportedly protect the individual’s privacy. “Transgender people are entitled to have their official documents and their legal name reflect their true identity without a burdensome and expensive process that endangers their personal safety,” Atkins said, according to the Advocate newspaper. “I am hopeful that the governor will support this simple bill that will greatly enhance the lives of transgender Californians.”

oscow, Russia – A proposed bill that will remove children from all LGBT parents in Russia has the world up in arms. Elena Kostyuchenko, an openly-gay Russian investigative journalist for the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta recently took to Twitter to announce her campaign to out all closeted Russian lawmakers. She said publishing the private affairs of Russian parliament members is a “nuclear bomb” that should be used as a “last resort,” according to a translation by The New Civil Rights Movement. After last week’s proposed bill that aims to take children from the homes of gay and lesbian parents, Kostyuchenko said “such a time has come.” She promised she will publish her report to out closeted parliament members on the day the bill gets read in the State Duma, according to Gay Russia. Kostyuchenko tweeted, “This is a warning. They want to destroy our lives, and we will destroy them.”

Michael Lucas Vs. Nikolai Alexeyev

RUSSIA’S NEWEST COLD WAR

/floridaagenda

Q&A

BY CHARLES BAXTER

M

Charles Baxter: Nikolay Alekseyev believes American initiatives to boycott Russian vodka and the Winter Olympics in Sochi are undermining the Russian gay rights movement. Can you explain his point of view? Michael Lucas: His views do not make any sense so I have no explanation. It’s between him and his shrink. These boycotts keep the issue in the spotlight, and very successfully so.

Absolutely. We should not be involved with countries where gay people are being discriminated, persecuted and beaten up by thugs because of government sponsored hate.

If Nikolay Alekseyev was forced or threatened to change his views by the Kremlin, is it fair for the LGBT community to turn their back on him?

Michael Lucas Wouldn’t a boycott punish the athletes?

I don’t care about a few athletes that will not get their medals when we are talking about millions of LGBT Russian people. For them, it’s a question of life and death. You have called gays the new Jews of Russia. What do you mean by that? Jews were always discriminated against in Russia. Today, very few Jews remain in Russia. The Russian government is now looking for another enemy to distract people from their economical problems. Russian gays were chosen as the new enemy. Earlier this year, when I was in Russia filming my new documentary (“The Campaign of Evil: Russia and Gay Propaganda”), I asked people on the street if they knew a gay person. The overwhelming response I heard was no. Most Russians do not know what gay people are about. They don’t know that gays are their neighbors, friends and relatives. All they have been taught is that gay people are a danger to their children. They believe homosexuality is a choice and that it is something that stems from molestation or rape. Putin has said he is ready to meet LGBT activists including Nikolay Alekseyev. Do you believe Putin is being genuine in his interest to reach out to the community? Of course not. Putin wants to preside over the biggest event in Russian history (the Winter Olym-

Yes, of course it is fair. What else can be done with the Kremlin’s agent? He obviously cannot be taken seriously. At this point, it is in his own interest to become irrelevant. What Russian leader can take the place of Nikolay Alekseyev? There are many people who can take his place. I believe a safe choice would be Elena Kostyuchenko, a journalist for Novaya Gazeta, who I interviewed for my documentary. She is smart, brave and speaks very good English. What are your feelings about prominent Russian activist Masha Gessen? Masha Gessen is an amazing journalist and activist. However, I am not sure she can be the right candidate because she can no longer live in Russia as she has an adopted son who can be taken from her because of the new laws. She is in particular danger because she has the only openly gay Russian family. What does the future hold for the LGBT community in Russia? Nothing good. Our continued pressure on the anti-gay laws will hopefully make it so that they are not enforced until after the Olympics. Gay men and women have another six months to leave the country. After the Olympics, I believe there will be a major crackdown on gay people from both the authorities and from the Russian mob.

September 11, 2013 H 9

So Americans should boycott the upcoming Olympics in Sochi?

pics) and doesn’t want anything to get in the way. So he chose Nikolay Alekseyev for this meeting and wants to make him “a voice of reason” that will tell the West to back off. This is what Alexeyev does so well. He pretends to speak for LGBTs in Russia. He tells us we should not boycott the Olympics and that we should stop demanding the propaganda laws be revoked and no longer demand equality for gay people.

CHRISTOPHER LOGAN

ichael Lucas says something very strange has happened to Russia’s best-known gay rights activist, Nikolai Alexeyev. Since 2005, Alexeyev has been the biggest opponent of Putin’s government, devoting himself fulltime to fighting the persecution of LGBT people in Russia. He is the creator of Gayrussia.ru web portal and the organizer of the first Russian gay pride events. Earlier this summer, he was arguing how homophobia in Russia had reached hysterical proportions. But recently, he has begun to sing a very different tune. He now claims that the dangers faced by sexual minorities in Russia have been exaggerated. He blames western media for spreading smears and outright lies about Russia. He also discredits other prominent Russian activists, including lesbian journalist Masha Gessen. He calls her fear to return to Russia with her son--due to new laws in the works that would allow authorities to remove children from homosexual parents--false and unfounded. No one knows why Nikolai Alexeyev has betrayed his former cause. Some fear it may be that he was threatened to do so by the Kremlin. Others say he was simply bought off. According to Russian-native Michael Lucas, it doesn’t matter. He says Alexeyev is now working for the Kremlin and, therefore, can no longer be trusted as a spokesman for LGBT Russians.

THE WEEK

September 11, 2013 H 12

Pet Shop Boys, Loretta Lynn, and Kaskade Fun with Tegan and Sara Wednesday, September 18th at the Mizner Park Amphitheater

THURSDAY 9/12

East End Boys The Pet Shop Boys have been fighting for a comeback for a number of years, but it seemed as though last year’s “Elysium” was the final nail in the coffin. While “Elysium” was atmospheric, emotional and ambitious, it was perhaps a little too ambitious. After the album received mixed reviews from critics and fans alike, the English electronic duo (consisting of Chris Lowe and openly gay lead singer Neil Tennant) decided to head back to the studio to record a follow up album, this time aiming for a dancer vibe. The duo teamed up with acclaimed producer Stuart Price (who’s worked with Madonna, Kylie Minogue, and Scissor Sisters to name a few) to create their dance record, and thankfully, the outcome was phenomenal. The album, appropriately titled “Electric,” peaked at #3 on the UK Albums

Chart, making it the duo’s highest charting album since 1993. Virtually every track is single-worthy, and each track can hold its own on any club DJ’s playlist. 8 p.m. The Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

FRIDAY 9/13

Bears at Bill’s Bill’s Filling Station is the destination for bears on a Friday night. Before you know it, you’ll be lost in a sea of hairy backs, pot bellies, whie dancing to progressive house music. Don’t ask how it happens, because we don’t know – it just does. Growl also tends to bring in cubs who aren’t from our neck of the woods, so you’ll never get bored. You should know that bears are very well trained, and usually won’t bite unless provoked. 10 p.m. Bill’s Filling Station. 2209 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

SATURDAY 9/14

Adam Levine... and the Rest of Maroon 5 If you feel like Maroon 5 was just here, it’s because they were, on March 29. Although it was just a short five months ago, we cannot tell a lie – we’ve missed Adam Levine. That flawless face...those tattoos...that body...his voice isn’t that bad either, though. Jokes aside, Maroon 5 is shaping up to be a memorable band for years to come. The band just recently released their fourth single from last year’s “Overexposed,” and is currently working on a fifth album, rumored to have a darker sound. Levine’s a force to be reckoned with, so we can only imagine the possibility of a darker, sexier sound. Cruzan Amphitheatre. 601 Sansburys Way, West Palm Beach, 33411.

Kaskade (9/14)

Now in its 16th year, Mona’s Adopt-A-Pet Day is a truly unique event. Not many cocktail lounges host a pet adoption, let alone 16 consecutive ones. The event will be hosted by The Pet Project, a nonprofit that ensures that pets belonging to persons living with HIV/ AIDS or other disabling conditions will still get the proper care and support. If qualified, the organization offers a food bank of low cost pet food, home delivery of said food (for clients who aren’t mobile), low cost veterinary services, and tons more. If you decide to take home a furry friend, you will also be provided with three months of free food. 3 p.m. To 7 p.m. Mona’s Cocktail Lounge. 502 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

A Kaskade show is the closest you’ll get to Ultra until March 28, 2014. Kaskade (born Ryan Raddon) is everything that you’d expect a modern, progressive house producer to be: he’s handsome, dapper, and makes radio-friendly house music that the masses can really move to. His forthcoming album, titled “Atmosphere,” has been described by Rolling Stone as “[featuring] classical elements....with dramatic, ‘Inception’esque strings.” The title track (and lead single) also doubles as Kaskade’s singing debut. “It’s not necessarily about being a singer – it’s more about just catching the idea of the song,” Kaskade told Rolling Stone. Kaskade was recently ranked number four on Stone’s list of “The 25 DJs That Rule the Earth,” squeaking by big names such as Diplo and David Guetta. If you’ve been meaning to unleash your inner raver, you’ll regret missing out on this set. 7 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

they’ve sold over 100 million albums (and singles) worldwide, making them the “most commercially successful electronic band in music history,” according to billboard.com. Most remember the English electronic group for smash singles “Enjoy the Silence,” “Just Can’t Get Enough,” “Personal Jesus” and “People Are People.” The goth-electronic band has enjoyed a solid fan base for decades now (with their biggest singles appearing in the 80s), releasing their thirteenth studio album, “Delta Machine,” earlier this year. The album also peaked at number six on the Billboard 200, making it their seventh top ten album in the US. The band has influenced a number of artists, big and small, including Shakira, Pet Shop Boys and The Killers. WEDNESDAY 9/18

Fun with Tegan and Sara Mizner Park is usually overlooked, that is, until a big name artist pops up for a night in the park’s amphitheater. This Wednesday, Fun (of “We Are Young” fame) and Tegan and Sara will draw a large crowd of concertgoers to the outdoor space. “We Are Young” is that one song that you only liked because you heard it so much, but in reality, Fun is actually a talented group of individuals. They even joked about their single when receiving a Grammy for “Record of the Year,” saying, “I don’t know what I was thinking, writing the chorus for this song. If this is in HD, everybody can see our faces, and we are not very young.” Hailing from Canada, lesbian twin sisters Tegan and Sara will be opening for Fun, in support of their recent album, “Heartthrob.” The album is pure pop, with slick production and fantastic vocals from the sisters. The idea of the two bands sharing the same stage is nothing short of amazing. 7 p.m. Mizner Park Amphitheater.

SCOTT SCHRAM

Country singer Loretta Lynn made it known early on in her career where she was coming from: Released in 1970, “Coal Miner’s Daughter” told the tale of Lynn’s life growing up in a cabin as a coal miner’s daughter. “In the summertime we didn’t have shoes to wear, but in the wintertime we’d all get a brand new pair from a mail order catalog,” Lynn sings on the track. The single became Lynn’s signature song, in addition to her duet with Conway Twitty – “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.” Lynn’s controversial songs kept her in the

spotlight during her career, including “Rated ‘X’”, which touched on the double standards that divorced women face. “The Pill,” about a wife and mother being liberated by birth-control pills also stirred the pot, making Lynn a key figure in feminism and a role model for working-class women. 7 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

DETROIT, MICHIGAN

America’s Most Dangerous City Tries a New Calling Card

/floridaagenda

BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

T

he last time we were in Detroit—oh, about three years ago—we were mugged. The previous visit, maybe two years earlier, we were mugged as well. And during out first visit to Detroil, way back in 1977, we were—you guessed it. Mugged and, as it happens, carjacked as well. The car, a rental from Budget, was later involved in a murder/burglary in which a house was set on fire and all the occupants killed. So too was the Budget Rental Car, which was parked in the garage at the time. Still, we have a warm spot of this city of 700,000. With decaying factories and the highest murder rate in America after New Orleans, it does have a tough image problem. While its high crime rate is a fact of life, it should not keep you from giving this town a shot—or, rather, try. The downtown architectural drama is reserved for the Renaissance Center (100

Renaissance Center), a cluster of seven high-rises. The tallest among them is the Detroit Marriot at the Renaissance Center with its 73 stories, making it the tallest all-hotel building in the Western Hemisphere. Incredible views look out upon the Ambassador Bridge connecting Detroit with Windsor, Ontario, in Canada. While the hotel is dramatic and its views spectacular, the place isn’t for anyone—in particular those with any kind of height issue. While there are many elegant hotels in Detroit, including the MGM Grand Detroit (1777 3rd St), there is an artificial cheap universality among them, much like the one shared by hotels in Las Vegas. The continuing decay of the downtown area, coupled with the July 18, 2013 filing for bankruptcy by Detroit (the largest U.S. city to file for bankruptcy), would seem to make Detroit a unusual choice as a travel destination, but it is, in fact, a

totally fascinating selection. The Detroit Institute of Art (5200 Woodward Ave) is a massive museum, with several excellent examples of works by Degas and Cézanne and a collection of pieces by African-American artists. It is not a world-class museum, but it reflective of the city itself. Once among the world’s wealthiest; now a graffiti covered shell of memories and success. It is nearly as tragic and glamorous an example of faded glory as the Michigan Central Station (2405 West Vernor Hwy). Built in 1918 at the start of Detroit’s greatness as the Motor City, the Greek-inspired temple served as the gateway to the Midwest until the last train left the station in 1988. Since that point, this again colossus to a lost past has remained a neglected, yet significant reminder of Detroit’s heritage. Not even the delightful Belle Isle (E

Jefferson Ave) has managed to escape the plague that surrounds Detroit. Designed in the late 1880s by Frederick Law Olmsted, a chief architect of New York’s Central Park, this island located between Detroit and Ontario, Canada, in the Detroit River. There is a small zoo and the city’s aquarium (which has been closed for years due to lack of funding) on the island, which is a popular place in summer to spend picnicking and remembering former glories. It is reached via MacArthur Bridge, three miles east of downtown. Go, relax, and imagine.

protein is that your body expends more energy to digest it than it does to digest carbs or fats. Build your meals around lean chicken, beef, fish or pork. That way you will burn more calories throughout the day and your muscles will get the protein they need to grow. Third, eat more fiber. Fiber is not a nutrient, but it is important to a healthy diet. Fiber is the part of plants that cannot be digested and it is found in all fresh fruits and vegetables. Beans, seeds and nuts are also a good source of fiber. Lack of fiber can result in sluggishness and constipation. Eating enough fiber not only provides you with a healthy digestive system, but it also helps you to feel fuller and even lowers cholesterol. Fourth, remember the importance of omega-3 polyunsaturated fats found in fish, nuts, seeds, flax seed and fish oil. Health benefits include less risk of diabetes and heart disease. But omega-3 fats can also contribute to a “fab” physique as well. For example, omega-3s reduce inflammation throughout the body. This not only prevents heart attacks, but it also helps sore, tired muscles to better recover. Eat fish and eggs a couple of times a week. Finally, remember that in order to stay lean and build muscle you must have a plan. Working out regularly, with a varied routine and challenging weights, will build muscle, provided you rest and feed your body the proper nutrients. Any questions or comments? sk any guy about his fitness goals and I’m sure that he’ll say something like, “I want to build muscle and lose fat.” While this seems like a plan, you can get confused by the amount of conflicting dietary and workout advice coming from all sources. If you did what you were told by every expert out there, you’d starve yourself one day and eat everything in sight the next. Always consult your physician before beginning a weight loss program or new workout regime just to be safe. Here are my five best strategies on how to build muscle and lose fat at the same time. First, to lose weight, you must cut calories. This does not mean going on a starvation diet or cutting out all carbs and fats as many will mistakenly tell you. The low fat, lower carbohydrate debate comes down to this: you have to eat fewer calories than you burn if you want to lose weight. The key here is eating fewer calories by cutting saturated fats and junk foods from your nutritional plan. Focus on eating smaller meals, five to six times a day, every two to three hours. Consume low glycemic index complex carbs (whole grain cereals, pastas, breads, fresh fruits, veggies and nuts) early in the day so that your energy level won’t lag as the day wears on. Second, remember that eating protein builds muscle. Proteins fills you up so you are less likely to graze between meals. Another great fact about

iving Green is one of those places that you’ve been meaning to pop in to. Maybe you pass by it on the way to work and think, “Wow, a farmers market who sells organic and local produce that isn’t a Whole Foods.” Yes, it exists, and it’s right here in Fort Lauderdale. They carry a fantastic selection of fruit, veggies, spices, bread, pasta, and just about anything else you’d get at a grocery store (short of meat or canned goods). They also offer exotic sundries, like dragon fruit and prickly pear, all at extremely fair prices. In my shopping experience, I was able to purchase fresh jicama, pomegranate, green and black kale and a variety of cold pressed juices. While the produce is priced very competitively, the real star is the prepared food and juice bar. The market had two salad options when I arrived: an arugula salad with a homemade strawberry dressing, and a pesto salad (both under $6). My friend ordered the arugula salad, as anything with pesto is instantly my first choice. Tony, the owner of the market, told me

that the dressings and salads are made fresh, daily, in-house. The salad was delicious: tangy green pesto dressing, goat cheese, red cabbage, arugula, cucumber, shaved carrots and grape tomatoes. The tart, rich salad was of the best quality, and was extremely fresh, as promised. The juice bar offers smoothies, juices, coffee and espresso and freshly baked pastries. I ordered a green smoothie ($5), made up of kale, cucumber, ginger, and lemon (to name a few of the many veggies used). The juice was fantastic, and was noticeably cheaper than Whole Foods. They even offer to juice any fruit or veggies you purchase from the market right then and there. At such a low price point, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be supporting this local business. Tony told me that the market will be expanding their juice bar, adding sandwiches to the menu in the near future. The addition of sandwiches will make Living Green a viable option for a quick, cheap, healthy lunch on the go. When you go, make sure to say “hi” to Tony, and tell them Guy Magazine sent you.

PAELLA

RECIPE

BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY

T

here are three widely known types of paella: Valencian paella, seafood paella and mixed paella. Valencian paella consists of white rice, green vegetables, meat (rabbit, chicken, and duck), land snails, beans and seasoning. Seafood paella replaces meat and snails with seafood and omits beans and green vegetables. Mixed paella is a free-style combination of meat, seafood, and vegetables. Other key ingredients include saffron and olive oil. You can use a big frying pan for this dish, I have one I put directly on the BBQ so I can be with my guests and have a drink with them while preparing dinner… • 10 pieces Split Chicken Wings • ½ Lb Shrimp • 1 Lb Assorted Mussels and Clams • 1 can of peeled Tomatoes • 4 Cloves Garlic chopped •3 -6 bell Peppers diced plus a handful of strips reserved to use as garnish • ½ cup frozen Peas • 1 tsp. Saffron Threads • Extra Virgin Olive Oil

• 2 cups Paella Rice • 4-6 cups fish bouillon • Salt to taste Heat extra virgin olive oil in a paellera. Sear the red bell pepper strips for the garnish and set aside. Sear the shrimp and set aside. Season the wings lightly with salt and sauté until golden brown. Add onions, garlic and the diced bell peppers. Sauté until vegetables are tender. Add the canned tomatoes, smash ’em and sauté. This mixture is called the sofrito. Add rice. Braise rice until covered with sofrito. Add broth. Taste and add salt if necessary. Add saffron and mix well. Simmer until rice is almost cooked. Top with the shellfish and the peas. Continue simmering until rice and crustaceans are finished cooking. Garnish with the seared red bell pepper strips. You are a chef.
