COVER STORY

ELDERLY MAN KILLED IN HATE CRIME ATTACK FOR ‘BLOWING KISSES’ BY GRANT JAMES

N

ew York, NY – A 69 year old man was allegedly stabbed to death in a New York subway station on September 16, according to the New York Post. The fact that it happened in broad daylight left many witnesses in shock, but what really made this gruesome murder so extreme was what the hate crime stemmed from something so small: a blown kiss. An elderly Edward Orozco was stabbed in the throat and chest by 22-year-old Steven Torres after Orozco blew Torres a kiss (according to Torres himself ). Witnesses say the knife was nearly eight inches long. Torres ran for several blocks to a corner where an undercover cop grabbed him, according to witnesses. A nearby tea shop owner, Edwin Dejesus, witnessed the attack before realizing that Torres was one of his regulars. “He was a gentleman,” said Dejesus. “It’s a shame.” Torres was charged with murder as a hate crime and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the New York Police Department. In addition to Orozco’s murder, Torres was charged with the stabbing of his co-worker, Miguel Gonzalez (which took place last Thursday). Gonzalez was taken to a local hospital but apparently didn’t file a police report at the time. Now, Torres will be charged for that incident as well, one also rumored to be a hate crime) Torres’s attack follows a recent string of violent anti-gay attacks and murders in the Big Apple, leaving many citizens shaken and worried. “I really don’t know what to think,” says Julio Lobaton, a witness of the stabbing (according to ABC). “I’m just shaken because what happened to this poor guy... He was screaming, ‘Help me, help me.’ I tried to inter-

vene, but then [he] pulled a knife and started stabbing the guy on the floor.” The part of the story that gets a little murky is whether or not Orozco was even in fact gay. According to NY Daily News, sources say that Torres is claiming that Orozco was also touching himself. Orozco’s widow,

Steven Torres being arrested by New York City Police

Alba (64) said that Torres was sadly mistaken. “He loved women,” she said. “The man who did this to him is a liar.” The couple had been married for 16 years. Now, Alba is left behind as a widow. “My husband is alone with me. We were all the time together [sic]. Everywhere. Now I am alone.”

Tupelo, MS – Bryan Fischer doesn’t hate gays. In fact, according to his recent statements, he “loves” them. During the host’s conservative talk show (“Focal Point”) on American Family radio, Fischer said “We don’t hate homosexuals. We love them.” Fischer added, “We grieve for them. It just saddens me to see people that are so deceived and whose lives are being wasted by falling prey to that disease. There’s a sickness there, there’s a pathology associated with homosexual behavior. You know these are not happy people. They are not well-adjusted people. It just breaks your heart to see what this perverted sense of homosexuality is doing to them. It’s just destroying their humanity.” Fischer also pondered when the American people would finally take a stand against the homosexual “perversity.” “And I just keep wondering, when are the American people

Trans Women Beat to Death in Los Angeles and Baton Rouge Baldwin Park, CA – Last week, the murders of two transgender women made headlines across the country. Melony Smith was found dead in a motel room last week in Baldwin Park (east Los Angeles), according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. The autopsy showed that she was beaten to death, with suspect Stephen Gonzalez taken into custody on drug charges while preparing to file murder charges. In another report from The Baton Rouge Advocate, a 31-year old trans woman, Shaun Hartley, was found dead in an abandoned house in Baton Rouge.

Joe Biden on Marriage Equality: ‘It’s the Civil Rights of Our Day’ Indianola, IA – Vice President Joe Biden stopped by Senator Tom Harkin’s annual steak fry in Indianola, Iowa to provide support and make a brief speech on a hot topic. Noting success in recent national issues, Biden touched on gay marriage for moment: “A lot of people criticized me for speaking out, not long ago, about gay marriage. I could not remain silent anymore. It’s time we stopped talking. It’s the civil rights of our day. It’s the issue of our day.” Biden went on to say, “That’s why the president eliminated [DOMA], ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ . . . I want to know why all of this gay hate just exploded over there. He said the Russian people don’t feel the way the government does.” She went on to say that she can relate to the struggle, explaining how her and Sonny experienced their own kind of discrimination. “People hated Sonny and I in the early days because we looked and acted so different. Sonny was always getting into fights – people would call him fag and he’d get his nose broken – only because we were dressing different.”

Latinos Salud’s Staff is here to help the whole community

Latinos Salud: Rebooted Wilton Manors, FL – With both a new look and new programs to “better serve the community,” the nonprofit Latinos Salud has recently “rebooted” their organization. The agency has tripled its program offerings over the past three years, and now, many services are available to both the Latino community and the non-Latino community. In a recent press release, Latino Salud’s Executive Director, Stephen Fallon PhD, said “We are a minority certified agency.... However, that means that Latinos are our first priority, not our only priority.” Some of the orga-

nization’s services have been extended to other members of the gay community in South Florida, particularly HIV positive individuals (or their spouses) and anyone who identifies as transgender. The agency reports that as of now, one-in-five participants are non-Latinos. Latinos Salud also provides free HIV rapid testing to everyone within the community, six days a week. Latinos Salud has also announced that they have received funding from The Smart Ride. In the press release, Linkage Specialist Gregory Timmer said, “In some instances, a client just needs a friendly face to lend moral support on a first doctor’s visit. Some clients had been afraid to

Attorney General’s Office Evades National Guard Marriage Equality Inquiry

NATIONAL AD REPRESENTATIVE

Miami, FL – The office of Florida’s Attorney General, Pam Bondi, has refused to offer an opinion on the pending issue of whether the Florida National Guard should “process benefits enrollment for the spouses of gay troops on state property,” reports Miami Herald. Writing to Bondi for an opinion on the situation, Major General Emmett R. Titshaw Jr. received a response from senior assistant attorney general Gerry Hammond, in lieu of Bondi. Hammond said that his request for a comment “provided insufficient information about the connection between the newly appointed policy of the United States Secretary of Defense and your official duties as the head of the Florida Department of Military Affairs.” Hammond went on to ask Titshaw for some clarification on what “the actions of the new federal policy requires of [the Florida National Guard].” The Miami Herald reports that while Florida is making a decision, the state is asking gay spouses to sign up at federally controlled military bases throughout the state.

Lisa Lampanelli, Turnabout & Fall Follies from a Gay Chorus The Week 9/19 to 9/25 BY PATRICK ROBERT

THURSDAY 9/19

Jump Start Thursday The weekend begins on Fridays, but college kids and gay guys tend to start their parties much sooner. What better way to kick off your weekend than by watching drag queens lip-synch their hearts out? Some may say with a mason jar of liquor, yet Village Pub disagrees, hosting its Jump Start Thursdays event with a drag performance starting at 9pm, featuring Sharee Ross, Dee Dee Van Cutt, and Anastasia Ross. If you’re not getting sauced across the street at Alibi, Village Pub may be the best place to enjoy less alcohol and more show tunes. 9 p.m.Village Pub. 2283 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

FRIDAY 9/20

Disney on Ice The title for this version of the only watchable ice spectacular this side of Michelle Kwan is “Heroes and Princesses.” Being gay is all about trying to find either your inner hero or princess, right? So bring your boyfriend (whether he be hero or princess) and relive your youth watching Belle, Jasmine, Ariel, Snow White, and Rapunzel find their princes. There may be a parade of awe-inspired children or, less happily, a bunch of crying babies. If you’re not afraid of such family-friendly entertainment, Disney on Ice can be a fun diversion. 7 p.m. BB&T Center. 1 Panther Pkwy, Sunrise, 33323. COURTESY OF NUVO.NET

Country music goddess, prior finalist of “Nashville Star,” and proud owner of a handgun license brings her protective charms to West Palm Beach, alongside fellow country superstar Dierks Bentley. Miranda Lambert burst on the scene in 2003 and has since had several commercially and critically successful albums. Dierks Bentley heard her music and knew right away that he wanted to perform with her. Back in 2011, he did just that, with the Locked and Loaded Tour. Now, they are back together, with more ammunition. Gay country music fans be alert: guns are not permitted inside the theater. 7 p.m. Cruzan Amphithteatre. 601 Sansburys Way, West Palm Beach, 33411.

Tragedy Walking, Tragedy Talking One of the most alarming statistics for gay culture is the rate of suicide within members of the community (whether young or old). The FISP (Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention) hopes to curb this epidemic. Neighborhood gay bar Rumors is joining in the effort. In order to help raise money for FISP, Rumors is hosting a drag queen night, featuring performers such as Daisy Deadpetals, Kiki Carmichael, and Missy MooseKnuckles (as well as some surprise guests). Drink specials, live entertainment, and red carpet awards make this a benefit you can’t miss. 9 p.m. Rumors Bar and Grill. 2426 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Lisa Lampanelli Comes to the Hard Rock Known for her intense racial insensitivity, Lisa Lampanelli has been a favorite of gay culture since she started her rise to fame. Lisa Lampanelli routinely lampoons her own attraction to black men (and their most prominent sexual organ), disparages every race, and jabs at the politics of gay sex. She’s been an outspoken supporter for gay rights. In 2011, The Westboro Baptist Church planned to pro-

Flying High: Story of Kites Some gay men choose to fly high in different ways, but maybe as a youth there was a time when “highness” referred to the beauty of a delicate kite floating in the wind and not the ramifications of a night with a bunch of powdery white stuff. The grace and majesty of all different types of kites are exhibited at the Cornell Museum in Delray Beach. From its origin in China 3,000 years ago to its heyday in popular culture in the 1950s, kites have had a strange road to its current nostalgic space in America’s heart. What’s your favorite: fighter, miniature, or Japanese? 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cornell Museum of Art and American Culture (inside of the Delray Beach Center for the Arts). 51 N Swinton Ave, Delray Beach, 33444.

WEDNESDAY 9/25

The Sound of Music A woman who can control a bunch of bratty children and make clothes out of curtains? I’m sure most gay men can find that impressive, especially if she’s capable of eluding the Nazis by trekking up a bunch of hills. The classic musical comes alive, again, with all your favorite hits: “Edelweiss,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” and “My Favorite Things.” Come watch as important decisions about love, nunnery, and political allegiance are made. 2 p.m. Wick Theater. 7901 N Federal Hwy, Boca Raton, 33487.

What’s the best way to unwind after a long week of work? If you’re answer was a strip club, you might be a sex addict. Either way, Johnny’s has more than just a bevy of thongs and lap dances. Enjoy drinks at the bar, grooves on the dance floor, or indulge in a little dollar bill unloading. Have you spent the week daydreaming about that one special stripper giving you the eye last week? Do you just see all people as objects for your amusement and would like to exert the financial powers patriarchal society affords you? Well, then, come stop on by this Broward Blvd favorite. Maybe not exactly a perfect date night, though. For that, refer to the above post.

HOW TO QUIT YOUR ADDICTION TO SUGAR BY PETER JACKSON, CPT

O

ne in five Americans dies from an obesity-related illness, according to a report released last month by U.S. health officials. Heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and certain type of cancers have all been linked to obesity. The larger the waistline, experts say, the greater the risk of health problems. Two out of three Americans are either overweight or obese—that’s 67% of the population or more than 190 million people. But the really alarming trend is that the problem is worsening, with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) predicting that by the year 2020, 75% of Americans will be either overweight or obese. The trend is clear, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC): In the year 2000, no state had an obesity rate of 30% or higher; by 2010, 12 states reported rates of 30% or more. While many among us laugh off “a few extra pounds” as perfectly harmless, the truth is health-related

conditions such as heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer are all linked to obesity. It’s no laughing matter: obesity diminishes quality of life, shortens life span and, not least of all, takes a toll on the health care system which drives costs up for everyone. If I were to award a single food item with the title of “Fastest Way To Pack On The Pounds,” hands-down the winner would be refined sugar. We have been eating more and more sugar over the past 200 years, which has led to rising obesity numbers. Back in 1822, the average person ate only 6.3 lbs. of sugar per year compared to 130 lbs. of sugar in 2013.

Here are seven ways to crave less of that sugar that’s killing your results and keeping you from attaining your goal weight: 1) EAT MORE PROTEIN: A diet rich in protein keeps you full, satisfied and less likely to crave sweets. A great way to make sure that you are getting enough is to plan each meal and snack around a protein. Plan breakfast around eggs, lunch and dinner around baked chicken breast, and make snacks hard boiled eggs or baked meatballs.

September 18, 2013 H 22

SPECIAL HEALTH REPORT

2) AVOID ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS: One of the biggest fitness myths out there is the idea that calorie-free, artificially sweetened beverages don’t impact your fat loss results. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the truth is that the diet soda you’re sipping is making it harder for you to reach your goal weight. While the diet soda itself doesn’t contain calories, it has been proven to cause cravings for sugary foods. Put down the diet soda and instead pick up a refreshing bottle of spring water. 3) STEER CLEAR OF SABOTEURS: The sad truth is that people in your life will try to sabotage your low sugar diet. You’ll run into that pushy person at the office who insists that you eat a

Sodas are loaded with sugar. Diet sodas may not contain calories, but the taste raises your desire for sugary foods.

That’s more than 20 times as much sugar in our modern diet! No wonder two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese! One of the reasons that your diet is filled with so much sugar is that some form of refined sugar is included in virtually every single processed food. This is yet another reason that it’s important to cut those processed and packaged convenience foods out of your diet. Why is sugar so bad? Not only does it promote rapid fat storage, but sugar also: • Weakens your immune system • Causes insulin resistance • Is addictive – as addictive, it is believed, as hard drugs • Speeds up the aging process • Raises your risk of disease • Contains empty calories Cutting sugar from your diet is easier said than done. Once it is a part of your daily diet, cravings strike, causing you to eat it even more frequently. But there is hope.

donut, the well-meaning family member who dishes you up a bowl of ice cream, and the friend who comes over with a plate of his home-baked cookies. The best avoidance strategy is to sincerely thank the sugar-pusher for their gift, tell them you wish you could eat it, and then blame me – or your trainer – as the bad guy who says that you need to cut back on sugar.

6) CHANGE YOUR PALATE: As you begin to limit your intake of refined sugars, you’ll find that your tolerance for sugar decreases. This means that something that didn’t taste sweet before – say a green apple – now has uncanny depths of sweetness. What’s happening is that your sweet receptors are becoming more finely tuned, now that you’re not overwhelming your palate with sickly-sweet refined sugar.

4) TRY DARK CHOCOLATE: For those moments when your sweet tooth is relentlessly badgering you for something sweet, ditch the super-sugary candies and stick with a small square of very dark chocolate. Chocolate that is 70% or higher in cocoa content should be the only candy that you keep on hand. The benefit of the cocoa, in addition to the lowered sugar content, makes dark chocolate an occasionally justifiable treat.

7) WORKOUT LIKE YOU MEAN IT: A regular, challenging exercise routine will not only get you into amazing shape, it also reduces your cravings for sugar. The endorphin rush brought on by vigorous exercise is an even more powerful feelgood-feeling than the pleasure gotten by indulging in sugary foods. Make challenging, consistent exercise a part of your life by signing up for a fitness program.

5) STICK WITH FRUIT: What’s sweet, colorful and comes in hundreds of flavors? Organic, seasonal, fresh fruit, of course! As you remove refined sugar from your life, feel free to add in some natural sugar by way of fresh, local fruit. It’s amazing how satisfyingly sweet fruit is--it’s truly nature’s candy.

• 5 large egg whites • 1 cup superfine (castor) sugar • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 1 teaspoon white vinegar •1 /2 tablespoon cornstarch (corn flour) And for the topping: • 1 or 2 cups of heavy whipping cream • 1 1/2 tablespoons granulated

white sugar (or to taste) • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • Fresh fruit — kiwi, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, passion fruit, peaches, pineapple, or other fruit of your choice… you are the chef. Preheat oven to 250º F and place the rack in the center of the oven. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and draw a 7 inch circle on the paper. Turn the parchment paper over so the circle is on the reverse side. Beat the egg whites on medium speed until they hold soft peaks. Start adding the sugar, a tablespoon at a time, and continue to beat, on high speed, until the meringue holds very stiff and shiny peaks. Add the vanilla extract. Sprinkle the vinegar and cornstarch over the top of the meringue and, with a rubber spatula, gently fold in. Spread the meringue inside the circle drawn on the parchment paper, smoothing the edges, making sure the edges of the meringue are slightly higher than the center. (You’ll

P

avlova is a meringue-based dessert named after the Russian ballet dancer Ánna Pávlova. Often referred to as “pav,” it is a cake similar to meringue with a crispy crust and a soft, gooey inside. The dessert is believed to have been created in honour of the dancer either during or after one of her tours to Australia and New Zealand in the 1920s. The nationality of its creator has been a source of argument between the two nations for many years. I in fact thought it was Irish, my auntie Ann used to make it and we would devour it…it’s my dad’s favorite.

Turn the oven off, leave the door slightly ajar, and let the meringue cool completely in the oven. Just before serving gently place the meringue onto a serving plate. Whip the cream until soft peaks form. Sweeten with the sugar and vanilla and then mound the

softly whipped cream into the center of the meringue. Arrange the fruit randomly, or in a decorative pattern, on top of the cream. You are a chef! Serve immediately. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

Afternoon Delight’s

JILL SOLOWAY SUBMITTED PHOTOS

BY GREGG SHAPIRO

“A

fternoon Delight” (Cinedigm/ The Film Arcade), Jill Soloway’s award winning feature film debut, is a delight any time of day. The story of complacent but bored domestic goddess and mother Rachel (Kathryn Hahn effortlessly stepping into a lead role), her shaky marriage to Jeff (Josh Radnor), her unfulfilling therapy appointments with Lenore (Jane Lynch) and dull female friendships, and how they are transformed after a visit to a strip club. It is at the strip club where Rachel meets stripper McKenna (Juno Temple giving the best performance of her career), an encounter that will forever change both women as Rachel makes saving McKenna her mission. As Soloway puts it, the film “treads in some dangerous territory,” that the “idea of the sex worker in need of rescue is only a few steps away from the idea of a queer person in need of rehabilitation.” In terms of the palatable sexual attraction between the two women, Soloway says that it is a “strand” of the story and that “Rachel revolves through the poles of wanting to rescue McKenna, wanting to be McKenna and wanting to have sex with McKenna.” I spoke in depth with Soloway about the film, her connection to LGBT themes, and working with the always hilarious Jane Lynch.

Jill Soloway Across: Scenes from her movie “Afternoon Delight”

Being a part of a creative family, including your mother writer Elaine and singer/songwriter sister Faith, did you always want to be in a creative field?

September 18, 2013 H 24

Jill Soloway: Yes. I think when I was a kid we were all staring at the television all day. So my thought was, “get inside that television.” [Laughs] Maybe so I could be the center of attention, I’m not sure about that. But I definitely wanted to be on the other side of the screen. What does it mean to you to have won the directing award at Sundance for your first full-length feature film “Afternoon Delight?” It’s so exciting. For me, the victory feels like a victory for feminism in comedy. Simply to make a movie about real women and what it means to be a

woman today. It also has some deep dark stuff and some great sexy stuff and it achieves its goals as a comedy. To pull all that off, to me it feels like the meaning of the award for me. I’m really glad you mentioned that because I was thinking about some of my favorite contemporary female filmmakers such as Nicole Holofcener and Lisa Cholodenko, and I think it would be fair to say that with “Afternoon Delight” you take your rightful place alongside them…. …and all three of us have “olo” in our names.

Good observation! Are they filmmakers whose work you admire? Of course! Aside from the three of us all having “olo” in our names, we’re all women, we’re all Jewish women. I admire and love both of them. They are both amazing women. I met Lisa Cholodenko when she was a guest director on “Six Feet Under” and she’s been incredibly supportive. They’ve both been incredibly supportive to me. There’s a real network of women directors out here in Los Angeles who are always reaching a hand out to each other and helping and bringing each other along. They’ve been great to me.

“Afternoon Delight” has a very distinctive opening titles sequence in which Rachel (Kathryn Hahn) proceeds to change seats in the car while alone in a drive-thru car wash. It’s a very quirky kind of move – do you know someone who does that? Absolutely! Right before we were trying to figure out the opening of the film, I was in a car wash with my son. I have a four-year-old. We were looking at the glass and taking pictures of the soap on the glass. I thought it would be an amazing opening image. My son and I did that — the van was on autopilot and I thought let’s go get in the back seat and see what happens. I definitely know somebody who did that.

I honestly, at this point, am starting to feel like all content is content. I’m getting into the business of original content. I’m writing a pilot for Amazon. I look at something like “Top of the Lake,” where at Sundance a lot of the filmmakers were going, “How does Jane Campion have a six-hour movie?” Then we get home and (find out) it’s her new TV series. Then you combine that with how a lot of filmmakers are trying to figure out how to get to their audiences. The way independent film is making it to audiences is through iTunes, through Netflix. So if a large percentage of the content is ultimately being received through your home television or home computer, and independent film is alive and well for those who like to go see independent films, to me there really isn’t that big of a difference. What does it mean to have the communal experience of sitting in a theater watching movies with other people? I think “Afternoon Delight,” in some ways, invites the communal experience. I imagine that mom is will drop their kids off at school and go and sneak and see this movie in the middle of the day with each other. Instead of the girls night out, it’s a moms afternoon out. They can see the movie and get salads afterwards and talk about it.

/floridaagenda

How does working on a feature film compare with the cable series work you’ve done?

So, how much of Jill, if any, is in Rachel? There’s a lot of me in her. I never have brought a stripper home. But I definitely have gotten confused during lap dances where I thought that the stripper wanted me to get her out of there [laughs]. I’ve gotten a couple of lap dances in my life and have often had that feeling where, “Wow, we have a special connection. I see her unlike any of these other people in here see her.

queer adjacent. This movie was work shopped at a queer artists retreat called Radar LAB run by Michelle Tea from San Francisco who is an inspiration to me. McKenna was inspired by a woman named Lorelei Lee that I met at that artists retreat. Antonia Crane is a sex worker that I met while I was performing in Michelle Tea’s Sister Spit (troupe). So sex workers, feminism, queer art are all alive in the same space for me. In some ways, I feel like it’s my work to be a translator between the queer world and the straight world.

Sisterhood is powerful. Sisterhood is powerful, exactly. Sisterhood is sexual – that should be the tagline [laughs]. “Afternoon Delight” is also a commentary on boredom and what a person can be driven to do spice up their life, including inviting a stripper to live in their home. What are some things that you do to alleviate boredom? In some ways, I feel like movies are my McKenna. There was a time where when we were making the film and I was running off from my family to be on the set of “Afternoon Delight” where I felt like Rachel hiding out with McKenna. The creative impulse that Rachel blamed--“I’m going to bring McKenna home and we’re going to blog together. Let’s do a podcast.”--that’s the same exact impulse I have making films and making television. I want to matter, I want to make things that matter. I want to lose myself when I’m creating. The urge toward a secret life is very similar to the urge toward a creative life.

Did you first meet Jane when you worked on “The Real Live Brady Bunch?” Yes, we were all part of the same theater company. Jane was Carol Brady in “The Real Live Brady Bunch.” She was just our friend who looked like Carol Brady. Jane plays a therapist in “Afternoon Delight,” as well as on “Two and A Half Men,” and in the upcoming “A.C.O.D.” Why do you think she continues to be cast as a therapist? [Laughs] She’s very funny and authoritarian. She really gets that comedy of taking yourself too seriously. Also, she’s tall, so she makes a really good authority figure. “Afternoon Delight” also has a strong Jewish quotient. How were you raised?

I feel like I come from a queer family. I feel like I am a queer artist, like I’ve always been sort of

Jill, you have consistently included queer characters in your work, including “Afternoon Delight” in which out actress Jane Lynch plays lesbian therapist Lenore.

We were raised culturally Jewish, but not in any way specifically religious or spiritual. (Now) I’m not really an observant Jew. I’m kind of interested in reinventing Jewish culture a little bit and doing some sort of community organizing with some sort of “Jewy revinenty” groups. But, no, I had bacon this morning [laughs].

TRAVEL

A MOUNTAIN OF FUN: PIGEON FORGE

September 18, 2013 H 26

A

s a former northerner, the only thing I miss about the weather “up north” is the changing of leaves. In order to get my fix, I often take a quick trip to the Smoky Mountains. Depending on my mood, I can go all artsy and plan a trip to Asheville, N.C., or if I’m feeling a little campy, I head over to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, home of Dollywood. Like Dolly herself, Pigeon Forge is kind of over-the-top tacky and a bit top-heavy. Most families head there in the summer, so Fall and early Winter is the perfect time to visit; the crowds are minimal, there are less screaming children and the prices are lower. The weather, right up until Christmas, is usually warm enough so that you can get away with a light jacket or sweater, and thru mid-October it can be downright balmy. In addition to standard amusement park thrill rides, Dollywood features traditional crafts and music of the Smoky Mountains area. The park hosts a number of concerts and musical events each year, including appearances by Parton and her family, as well as other national and local musical acts. Dollywood is also the site of the Southern Gospel Museum and Hall of Fame. The park has come a long way since 1984 when Dolly Parton bought into an existing rural amusement park, doubling its size to 150 acres. Dollywood is organized into ten themed areas. The Showstreet, Rivertown Junction, Craftsmen’s Valley, Village, Country Fair, Timber Canyon, and Jukebox Junction areas reflect the historical eras and culture of east Tennessee, while the Dreamland Forest and Adventures in Imagination areas explore Dolly Parton’s life and creative mind. If you like roller coasters and rides, Dollywood has enough to keep you happy including The Wild Eagle, America’s first wing coaster. After the high season, some of the rides and attractions are closed, but the real reason to visit is the Chasing Rainbows Museum, with mementos of Dolly’s career, including many of her costumes and a display where you can virtually “try” on many of Dolly’s wigs. You can always tell the gay men at Dollywood because they spend an inordinate amount of time at this exhibit. The days of operation vary during the fall months and then pick up again be-

tween Thanksgiving and early January. Single day tickets for Dollywood are about $50, and discounts are often available. Special concerts sometimes have a separate ticket price. For more information call 800-365-5996 or go dollywood.com. Time your visit to coincide with some of the special events and festivals to maximize your fun. Among the special events slated through the end of the year are the National Southern Gospel & Harvest Celebration from Oct. 2 – Nov. 2, held on the Dollywood grounds is the biggest Southern gospel festival in the Smokies. Admission to all concerts included with Dollywood admission. “Smoky Mountain Christmas Festival” runs, Nov. 9 through Jan. 4, and features four million holiday lights and spectacular holiday performances, including Dollywood’s all-new adaptation of the Dickens classic, “A Christmas Carol”, more than 20 rides and attractions, elaborate holiday decorations, twinkling lights and Christmas-themed menus. In Pigeon Forge there are a number of options for lodging, including cabins, luxury hotels, inexpensive motels and a wide variety of B&B choices. There is even a gay-owned facility in the nearby city of Gatlinburg (check out gay-gatlinburg.com). Gatlinburg’s about the only gay thing you’ll find in the area (but with all the entertainers Dollywood employees, I bet you can ferret something out). Pigeon Forge and the surrounding area do offer some special events which are a big tourist draw. Among those are the 9th An-

nual Gatlinburg Fine Arts Festival (Oct. 4 – 6) and the “Great Smoky Christmas Arts & Crafts Show” (December 2 – 8), which brings together a multitude of artists, musicians, and craftsmen and admission is free. For more information on the Gatlinburg Fine Arts Festival, check out gfaf.net. Even without those special events, the area offers hundreds of ways to keep you busy. Among some of my favorites are; Bluff Mountain Adventures, which offers guided ATV trail rides on 6,000 acres of mountain trails. Country Tonite Theatre features large scale production numbers with singers, dancers, musicians and comics. The 1,500-seat multi-million dollar theatre is

equipped with state-of the art sound and lighting and often features well known country performers. The Elvis Museum is almost as campy as Dolly herself. It houses over 15,000 square feet of all Elvis, including his last limousine and his world famous $250,000.00 ring. A visit to the gift shop is a must! Record-A-Song Recording Studios allows you to go karaoke one better by recording your favorite song to any of thousands of background tracks. You can be a recording star for less than $20! Smoky Mountain Ziplines has some of the best zipline and canopy tours in the area. Wildwater rafting, tubing and kayak rentals offer a chance for outdoor adventures as weather permits.

For information on these and other attractions, go to mypigeonforge.com Of course, my main reason for going is to experience the change of seasons and the best place to do that is Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Whether you delight in a strenuous hike to the crest of a mountain or prefer to sit quietly and watch the sun set, Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers a myriad of activities for you to enjoy. Try biking through Cades Cove on a misty summer morning, or choose from over 800 miles of trails ranging from quiet walkways to multi-day backpacking treks through the backcountry. The hardest part may be choosing which auto tour, trail, waterfall, overlook, or historic area to explore. The park also has hundreds of miles of horse trails and four rental stables provide mounts and guides. For more information about the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, call 1-800-365-2267 or go to nps.gov/grsm.

See next week’s column for the artsy side of a trip to Smoky Mountains’ neighbors, The Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville North Carolina.
