SUNSHINE STATE Church Ordains Deacon in Fort Lauderdale
Sen. Marco Rubio
COURTESY OF NCWTV.COM
Fort Lauderdale, FL – On Saturday, September 21, The Parish of Sts. Francis and Clare ordained one of their brothers as a deacon at their Parish Church in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The church’s bishop and some of its members from Key Largo attended the special event. Father Joe told “it’s quite an event in the life of our Parish. We have had members profess their

Rubio Blocks Gay Black Judge’s Move to the Federal Bench Miami, FL – Senator Marco Rubio announced that he was withdrawing his support for gay black Miami judge, William Thomas, citing concerns about the judge’s actions in two criminal cases, according to The New York Times. Without Rubio’s approval, Thomas’s nomination to the Federal District Court for the Southern District of Florida is blocked. Nominated by President Obama over ten months ago, Judge Thomas’s supports claim that Rubio’s opposition was purely political. Yolanda Strader (president of the Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. Bar Association, an organization that aims to aid African American lawyers) told Times, “As much as I would like to think that politics has nothing to do with this, it looks as if it does. It would be unfair to prevent a well-qualified judicial nominee from proceeding with the nomination process because he is an openly gay black male.” A spokeswoman for Rubio said that Rubio was concerned about Thomas’s “fitness” for the federal bench. “Those concerns include questions about his judicial temperament and his willingness to impose appropriate criminal sentences,” the spokeswoman said.
promises to live as Franciscan friars but this is the first time anyone is being ordained.” The church has been around since Christmas of 2004, celebrating four years at their current location this October. The church (which continues to grow) takes beliefs from both the Christian and Catholic teachings, offering members of the community diverse worship. The church is open to people from all walks of life, priding itself on diversity, stating “We are all God’s children.” For more information visit stsfrancisandclare.org

Broward House Introduces Condom Dispensers Fort Lauderdale, FL – Last week South Florida’s oldest and largest HIV/AIDS community organization announced that it will be placing condom dispensers throughout the South Florida area, with the help of local businesses. The dispensers, which are free of charge to both the establishments and the members of the community, will be replenished regularly by MEGA, a program of Broward House. Stacy Hyde, Broward House President and CEO, said it’s “Encouraging that our community is embracing the message of safer sex. We want to support individuals in protecting themselves and each other. The more access we can provide to condoms and information, the less new HIV infections and other STD infections our community will experience.” Along with the announcement, Broward House released startling facts about Broward County and Florida as a whole. Broward County (specifically Fort Lauderdale) currently ranks highest in the number of new HIV infections cases per capita in the United States. As a state, Florida ranks 3rd in the nation for the number of people living with AIDS. The condom dispensers will be placed within the next two weeks at a number of locations that have already pledged to carry them: Alibi, Bill’s Filling Station, Scandals Saloon, Village Pub, Rumors Bar & Grill and Sidelines Sports Bar.

ong-time graphic designer and photographer Warren Conway died last week after a long battle with liver cancer. Conway passed away, last Tuesday, in a Miami hospice facility at the age of 64. Conway, originally born in Hunington, New York, was a 50 year resident of South Florida, living in the Riverside area of Fort Lauderdale. Conway was a noted graphic artist who did creative work for years for Georgie’s Alibi (in Wilton Manors and St. Petersburg), the Ramrod, Tropics Restaurant and Piano Bar, the Village Pub, Rosie’s and the former Jackhammer, Marlin Beach Resort and David magazine. For 10 years he was the official photographer for the Miami Opera and a volunteer for the Poverello food bank. “He was one of the nicest people I have ever known,” said fellow photographer Pompano Bill. “He was a prince of a guy,” said Fort Lauderdale businessman Ron Gofrank. Warren Conway is survived by longtime partner of 19 years, Bill Molner, two sisters and a step brother. At press time, funeral arrangements were incomplete.

Huntington Beach, CA – Cassidy Campbell, the 16-year-old who was crowned Homecoming Queen at Marina High School, is experiencing an intense backlash from her win. Following her Friday win, the teen posted a video just under nine minutes on her YouTube channel on Saturday (adorning her crown and Homecoming Queen sash), where she speaks about the backlash from her win and the amount of grief it has caused her. In her video, Campbell says she’s “always judged, always looked down upon, and always made fun of.” She goes on to say “Sometimes I wonder ‘is it even worth it,’ and if I should just go back to being miserable, and just be a boy and hate myself, and hate my life. Just so everyone could just shut up and leave me alone . . . I’ve been dealing with this my whole

life, so I should have known better.” Campbell says she is a girl through and through: She was “born” a girl, it wasn’t a choice. She says that her parents knew she was a girl, even before she knew. “It still does hurt my feelings because I am a human being, and I am a person, just like every girl up there. Take the ‘girl’ out of it. I am a human being.”
Ohio Lawmaker to Impeach Judge Who Recognized Gay Marriage Columbus, OH – Back in July, a federal district judge, Timothy Black, ruled Ohio must recognize the marriage between John Arthur and Tim Obergefell. Arthur is terminally ill with ALS, so the couple
flew to Maryland to marry early in July. Upon returning, the couple sued the state of Ohio in order to list Arthur as married on his death certificate, listing Obergefell as Arthur’s surviving spouse. On July 22, Judge Black ruled in the couple’s favor, writing that “this is not a complicated case.” Now, an Ohio lawmaker wants to impeach Judge Black, claiming the judge’s ruling violated “state sovereignty,” according to the Cincinatti Enquirer. Ohio State Rep. John Becker (Republican) wrote to Ohio’s representatives, asking fellow republicans to begin impeachment proceedings against Judge Timothy Black. “Judge Black has demonstrated his incompetence by allowing his perosnal political bias to supersede jurisprudence,” wrote Becker. “This will begin the process of restoring state sovereignty back to the original intent of the constitution.” No legal action will

Washington, DC – Despite siding with Putin’s involvement with Syria, 70% of Americans view Russia as an unfriendly (or enemy) nation, according to a recent poll by gallup.com. The survey, which was conducted September 15-16, took place just after Putin helped to arrange a deal that would rid Syria of chemical weapons, avoiding U.S. military action against Syria. Since 1999, Americans have considered Russia an “ally nation,” yet now it appears that opinions are changing. Though 45% of Americans have not heard of the LGBT “propaganda” law, 69% of those who were aware of the law disapprove; The poll also found that 64% of Americans who heard of Russia’s asylum to Snowden disapprove. oscow, Russia – Russian human rights laweyer Masha Bast, who caused a ruckus last week when she came out as a bisexual transgender woman married to a Russian woman, appears to be going full speed ahead with more political news – she has just announced that she will be running for President of Russia in 2018. Bast announced on Monday her run for the 2018 election, saying that she is seeking to hold the “first real democratic, honest and fair elections in Russia.” If elected, Bast would be both the first female and the first (openly) LGBT person to run the country. “Putin wants me to live in the middle ages,” Bast wrote on Facebook. “I personally want to live in the 21st Century.” Bast has yet to elaborate on how Russia’s recent gay “propaganda” ban would affect her run.

FLICKR / CHRISTUS VINCIT
ome, Italy – In an interview conducted for La Civilta Cattolica, a Jesuit journal in Rome, Pope Francis has stated that the Church may express its opinion on the lives of gays and lesbians, but does not have the right to “interfere spiritually” in such matters. This follows comments the pontiff made in July calling for more tolerance toward members of the clergy who are gay. “The Church has sometimes locked itself up in small things, in small-minded rules,” the pope said in the interview conducted by the Rev. Antonio Spadaro, editor of La Civilta (translated by the Associated Press). In the same interview, the pope called for women to play a key role in Church decisions. The pope went on to say that his first mission was to change the Church’s attitude. “We have to find a new balance, otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel,” said Francis. “The people of God want pastors, not clergy acting like bureaucrats or government officials.” Pope Francis said that in Buenos Aires, he would receive letters from homosexuals who say they are “socially wounded” because they tell him that they feel the church has condemned them. “But the church does not want to do this,” said Francis. “During the return flight from Rio de Janeiro, I said that if a homosexual person is of good will and is in search of God, I am no one to judge. By saying this, I said what the catechism says. Religion has the right to express its opinion in the service of the people, but God in creation has set us free: it is not possible to interfere spiritually in the life of a person.” Francis doesn’t exactly come out and
say “I support gay marriage.” In the 12,000-word interview, Francis says that the church’s position on gay marriage is “clear,” but said that “the proclamation of the saving love of God comes before moral and religious imperatives.” Francis said, “We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods. This is not possible. I have not spoken much about these things, and I was reprimanded for that. But when we speak about these issues, we have to talk about them in a context. The teaching of the church, for that matter, is clear and I am a son of the church, but it is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time … A person once asked me, in a provocative manner, if I approved of homosexuality.
I replied with another question: ‘Tell me: when God looks at a gay person, does he endorse the existence of this person with love, or reject and condemn this person?’ We must always consider the person.” After all, Pope Francis himself is a sinner – he is human, after all. When Spadaro asked Francis, “Who is Jorge Mario Bergoglio?” few expected the response he received. “I am a sinner,” said Francis. “This is the most accurate definition. It is not a figure of speech, a literary genre. I am a sinner. Yes, perhaps I can say that I am a bit astute, that I can adapt to circumstances, but it is also true that I am a bit naïve. Yes, but the best summary, the one that comes more from inside and I feel most true is this: I am a sinner whom the Lord has looked upon.”

lbert Cabrera is a musical guru. Better known as one half of the Latin Rascals, Cabrera, along with Tony Moran, helped to create the dance genre of the ’80s known as “freestyle.” After DJ’ing in New York, Cabrera landed a high profile gig as a mixer at WKTU, one of the Big Apple’s biggest radio stations. The duo’s remixes and edits brought some attention their way, eventually producing the Cover Girls single, “Show Me,” which became a huge club at the time. The duo’s work was pushed by Arthur Baker, which lead them to remix songs for Diana Ross, Cyndi Lauper, Hall and Oates, and plenty more. At that time, the duo transitioned from remixers to artists, where Tony Moran took vocal lessons and took to the stage, with Cabrera on the drums. But the late-night work sessions in the studio combined with the clubbing took its toll on Tony eventually. Since cocaine was so prominent in the ’80s and ’90s, it wasn’t long before Cabrera was doing lines in order to stay up all night (whether it be in the studio or at the club). “It was normal to be in the studio and do, you know, a few lines of cocaine and stay up if sessions started at 2 a.m.,” said Cabrera. When asked when Cabrera made the decision that his career was more important, he was honest: “When drugs beat me up enough to recognize that that wasn’t the route to go, and I started to see my friends die and see how serious it was.” Cabrera said that the “power” drugs have over people is reason enough to stay away. In 2001, Cabrera was doing sound engineering, working with various artists when he got a call from a studio rep to produce a song. The work led Cabrera to form a separate project, called Lee Cabrera, which gained Cabrera huge notoriety in Ibiza with a successful remix of Lil’ Mo’ Yin Yang’s “Reach” in 2002. In 2003, he released the CD and video for “Shake It,” Cabrera’s biggest single to date. He went on a musical hiatus from 2004-2010 to explore other ventures, before finally deciding to head back to music in some way, shape, or form. After traveling to Thailand, Cabrera was inspired, recording a total of 22 tracks. Preparing to move to Thailand, Cabrera has released a remix for “Joy and Pain” by Pagany, which is already receiving positive feedback from house music critics and listeners. Cabrera got through the ‘80s and ‘90s club scenes because of one thing – passion. His advice to young artists is to stay away from drugs (even if everyone else is using them around you) and to just focus on your passion.

I
went on this date once with a fairly successful human resources person. He was smart, attractive, and could keep up with most of the jokes (which, in my dating life, is incredibly rare). Everything was going fine, and then he said, “I am really looking for a boyfriend I can compete with.” After noticing my faltered face, he quickly amended his sentiments. “What I mean is, we would compete for getting the other person better presents. Like, I’d buy him a watch, and then he’d have to try to get me something better.” I don’t think that’s what he meant. I nicely ended the date, started my car, and drove home disappointed. The last thing I wanted to do was actually have to compete with the person I’d be connected to. But this hapless date wasn’t the first time the issue of competition in gay relationships had come up in my life. Many of the various relationships I’ve observed work on this level. Gay men, in love, compete with each other, and many of the fights stemmed from one losing whatever mini-competition they had engaged in. Most men, in general, are very competitive. So if you put two men together in a loving relationship, the issue of competition is bound to come up. My date had decided that not only was it okay, but it was a non-negotiable for the relationship. He, and many other people I’ve talked to, find it to be healthy. You push each other to be the best person that you can be. The problem comes with the fall-out when the competition is over. How does the “loser” negotiate the self-esteem loss? Already, gay men suffer from low self-esteem thanks to our homophobic socialization. Overly competitive behavior oftentimes comes from dips in self-
SHOULD GAY RELATIONSHIPS BE COMPETITIVE? esteem. So what happens when you date someone who already calls into question your self worth (which relationships do, in general), you compete over something, and then lose? How do you maintain the relationship and not find yourself on the verge of suicide? To make matters worse, most people are attracted to others with similar interests (God knows the amount of teachers/ educators OkCupid swears are perfect matches for me. But OkCupid’s seemingly capricious ideas of my best interests are incredibly suspect already…a topic for another time). It should be normal for a person to be attracted to someone in the same profession: after all, you have something to bond over, talk about, and enjoy. At the same time, though, one is bound to be more successful than the other. Won’t most situations like this end with one feeling worse about themselves? It’s not just in the work world, either. I know a tennis player who wants to date someone close to his level of play but, “Just
a tad worse. That way, the matches are exciting, but I always win.” It seems that not only is my friend interested in having power over his partner, but the idea of the other being better would be disastrous. Even attractiveness can be a cause for competitiveness in gay relationships. The other week I was talking to a very muscular, chiseled real estate agent who had just broken up with his boyfriend. When he showed me a picture I mentioned how cute he was. “He is not cute,” was his response. Instead of wanting to brag about the attractiveness of a partner acquired (even if no longer in the picture), the real estate agent couldn’t stomach the idea of his ex being cute. “You’re much cuter,” was my response, which alleviated any of the anxiety. Perhaps the pinnacle of egregious competitiveness in gay relationships comes from open relationships and boyfriends who actually compete against each other for the most conquests—sadly, I’ve also seen this happen before. In such a scenario,
the partners try to one up the other and seduce the most people. Psychologically messy, the relationships devolve into something akin to wretched nights at a misogynistic frat-house hazing, with one partner bragging about the latest conquests while the other makes shallow cuts into his overly-muscular thighs. So, if gay men are constantly competing with their boyfriends, how do we still maintain a healthy and happy relationship? The best response (as with anything) is to know who you are. Most of the things people compete for are tangible achievements, but the entire scope of a person’s worth goes so much farther than what can be measured by money, looks, or possessions. The more secure you are with the beautiful parts of yourself, the more capable you will be to appreciate the ways someone may exceed you. There are so many unique gifts that each person possesses—the less comfortable you are with those parts of yourself, the more ugly the competition gets. So figure out who you are, what you bring to the table, and cherish those attributes. Hopefully, your partner will cherish them, too. Patrick Robert is currently a high school English teacher in Broward County. He is pursuing an MFA from Spalding University and working on a book entitled Gayborhood. The book concerns the struggles of internalized homonegativity in two gay men during the turn of the millennium and how the landscape of the burgeoning gayborhood Wilton Manors shapes their lives.

THURSDAY 9/26
An Evening of One Acts Two one acts mark this new performance at the Andrews Living Arts center: one fairly unknown, the other wildly popular. The first one act is the more obscure—the 1963 Off-Broadway “Save Me a Place at Forest Lawn.” Two tired, old, weary widowers meet daily at the cafeteria to discuss their grandchildren, their lives, and death’s looming presence. A treat, surely, for any gay “Golden Girls” fan. The second production is a bit more known— “The Vagina Monologues.” Eve Ensler’s feminist, Obie award-winning play consists of a few women sitting in a circle reciting funny, haunting, sad, affecting monologues. Known for its vivid descriptions of the female
FRIDAY 9/27 anatomy yet tempered with charged political sentiments, “The Vagina Monologues” is a contemporary sensation. If personal descriptions of the inner-workings of a gay man’s biggest nightmare (the vagina) are not your thing, then you may want to skip this graphic tour-de-force. On the other hand, if you like well-written, interesting, controversial material, then you could put your fears aside and enjoy a night at the theater. 8 p.m. Andrews Living Arts Studio. 23 NW 5th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.
The Manor: Bubble Gum Fridays If you don’t know who Brian Wilson or The Beach Boys are, then this may be the place for you. Fort Lauderdale’s favorite 18+ dance party never fails to bring in the crowds, even if a big chunk of said crowd can’t even legally rent a car yet. A hip-hop room, a large dance floor, an outdoor bar, many indoor bars, and a cruising balcony make this one of the greatest dance clubs in South Florida— gay or straight. Get your tight-jeans, your wife-beaters, your neon-colored spandex ready. The Manor. 2345 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Brian Wilson is one of those heavily respected, mentally ill musicians who seemed to crop up around the 1960’s. Back in those wistful years, he composed and arranged music for The Beach Boys. During this time he also produced his own critically successful album Pet Sounds. Then, Brian Wilson began his mental breakdowns. His second album, Smile, was dropped. The Beach Boys’ relationship with him strained as Wilson suffered nervous breakdown after nervous breakdown. Fortunately, he composed himself and released Smile to heavy acclaim in 2004 (over 30 years later). Now, he has teamed up with Jeff Beck—named one of the greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone and ex-guitarist for The Yardbirds. Not only are they touring, but word is a new album is in the works. 7:30 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

The Go-Go’s burst onto the 80s pop scene with such classic songs as “Walk Like an Egyptian” and “We Got the Beat.” Now both wedding reception and cruise ship staples, the infectious songs have somehow stood the test of, admittedly, a lot of time. They are also dubbed the most successful all female rock band ever. 8 p.m. The Seminole Coconut Creek Casino. 5550 NW 40th St, Coconut Creek, 33073.

TRAVEL
CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA The Day the Queen City Turned White BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON
W
September 25, 2013 H 16
FLICKR / HAROLD KING
e celebrated Christmas 2010 in Charlotte, the largest city in North Carolina. And as if Bing Crosby waved a magic wand, the skies opened up and snow began to fall. Not a lot, mind you, since this is the South, after all. But even 3.5 inches is enough to make things white. As you might guess, it’s unusual to have snow in Charlotte, with ice-storms the common winter pattern. The city has a subtropical climate for much of the year, with last year’s high of 106, on July 4th weekend, setting a record. The city’s nickname, the Queen City, is slightly misleading, especially among the LGBT community, who might otherwise expect a large homosexual population. Well, you’ve got the wrong Queen, honey.
In this case, Charlotte of MecklenburgStrelitz, who at the age of 18 wed the young King George III of England and became the first royal residents of Buckingham House (later Buckingham Palace). In any case, Charlotte became Queen one year before Charlotte, the city, was born. While the city took a few dozen years to take hold in any significant way, when it finally found its direction, Charlotte ended up to be the financial center of the South (and the second largest financial center in North America—after New York). It’s the headquarters for Bank of America, and the Eastern headquarters for Wells Fargo Bank. So, there’s never a problem finding a handy ATM here. For nights on the town, run, do not walk, over to The Scorpio (2301 Free-
dom Dr). At 45 years young, Scorpio is Charlotte’s oldest gay nightclub complex. It’s open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but the club is famous for its Friday night Life’s a Drag show (with hostess Tiffany Storm—she of the white lipstick and pale lavender eye shadow). From the oldest to the newest, don’t miss a trip to Marigny Dance Club (1440 S Tryon St #110), which took its inspiration from Faubourg Marigny, a neighborhood of New Orleans. This is supposed to explain the giant Swarovski crystal chandelier, the red velvet seating in the elevated VIP area, the back patio called Macaroon, and the lounge--a quieter bit of business called the Empire. Nothing, however, can explain the red-flocked wallpaper that stretches floor to ceiling.
We would scream “bordello,” but no one would hear us anyway. As our regular fans know, it doesn’t take much to have us taking off our clothes in public. At the Woodshed Lounge (4000 Queen City Dr), they even enourage it. On Thursday nights, it’s Deep Throat UnderWear Night, where you might just win yourself a $25 bar tab if your undies have the best fit in Charlotte. The Woodshed is the place to find bears and cubs on the weekends, along with hairy hospitality. The Nickel Bar (2817 Rozzelles Ferry Rd) has the distinction of being the only African-American owned gay bar in the city. It has s a culturally diverse clientele, with some major black strippers on the first and third Saturday of each month. Even better than a white Christmas.

TRAINING LIKE A BRUTE
HEALTH

ust when you think that you can hardly lift another pound for one more rep of your last set, that’s when you need to give it just a little more. This is the point when real muscle growth can take place if you are up for the challenge. That’s the idea behind forced repetitions--one of the best ways to power through a plateau and gain size. Here’s when a spotter, bud or personal trainer can come in handy to help you unleash the brute inside of you! Forced repetitions are based upon the concept that when you lift weights, the final few repetitions of your last set are the most beneficial, because at this point the muscles targeted are being pushed to exhaustion. While one guy does the lifting, his partner places his hands in the proper position to help him finish one or two more reps he couldn’t have completed on his own. If you’ve got a partner you can count on, try this program once a week. Using this strategy on a daily basis is too much and may result in overtraining and injuries like tendonitis. Here’s an example of a forced reps exercise for each muscle group.
Biceps Partial Curls: Grasp an EZ curl bar with arms bent at 90 degree angles. Curl up until biceps meet forearms, pause, then lower to starting position. For your last set, have a partner face you and help you curl 2 more reps. Barbell Bench Press: Lie face up and grasp a barbell with arms bent at 90 degree angles. Press it overhead, pause, then return to starting position. At the end of your last set, have your partner stand over you and help raise and lower the bar for one or two more reps. Pull Ups for Shoulders, Back: Grasp an overhead pull-up bar and pull yourself up so that your chin is at or above the bar, pause, then lower yourself to the starting position. At the end of your last set, have your partner grasp your feet and help you do just a couple more reps. Forced repetitions once a week for each muscle group, will really maximize muscle size and strength. Contact TrainerTomB@aol.com or stop by Pumpn’Inc. at 1271 NE 9th Ave. in Fort Lauderdale 954-557 1119.

Barbell Squats: Grasp a barbell on the upper back, with feet shoulder width apart. Lower until your thighs are parallel to the ground, pause, then rise to starting position. At the end of your last set, have a partner stand behind you with hands around your torso and have him assist you in completing 2 more reps. Make sure to keep your back straight and your toes pointed outward with knees behind your toes as you squat down.
Triceps Skull Crushers: Lie on a bench and grasp an EZ curl bar at arms length over the chest. Lower it to just above the forehead, pause then return to starting position. For your last set, have a partner stand over you and help you raise and lower the bar for 2 more reps.

BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY
• 3 tablespoons olive oil • 3 - 4 cloves garlic, chopped finely • 1 cup chopped prosciutto • 1 big tin of whole tomatoes, drained and chopped • 1/2 cup of heavy cream • 1/4 cup of vodka • Salt and pepper to taste • Fresh basil to garnish • 1 pinch paprika • 1 lb penne pasta • 3/4 cup freshly grated parmigiano-reggiano cheese

his is an Italian pasta dish always made with vodka and penne pasta, often with heavy cream, crushed tomatoes, garlic or onion, and sometimes sausage or bacon. It is one of the most common vodka food recipes and probably the only “Vodka” dish I’ve ever seen served in restaurants. There are numerous versions of this classic dish. But since I have received numerous requests, I thought it was about time I gave you mine.

PENNE A LA VODKA
In a pot big enough to hold all the pasta and sauce, heat the olive oil. Add the garlic and cook until golden brown. Stir in the proscuitto and add the tomatoes, paprika, and pepper and salt. Simmer for a few minutes. Stir in the cream and cook for 2 minutes stirring all the time. Add the vodka and cook until it no longer smells strongly of vodka. Cook the pasta al dente. Add the pasta to the pot and mix until it is all coated. Toss in the cheese, garnish with fresh basil and serve immediately. I actually love to use grated Swiss to finish.... But you are the chef!
