VILLAGE PUB CELEBRATES ONE YEAR OF SUCCESS
October 2, 2013 H 6
What is now Village Pub had its beginnings when Alex Sadeghi and Jerry Yerich decided that they wanted to open up a bar space and contacted George Kessinger for his input. Alex, who is of Swedish citizen, wanted to move to the US, and opening a business would help him to be able to attain an investor visa which would allow him to become a permanent resident. Shortly thereafter Alex and Jerry met Greg Phelps, Mark Byard and Jimmy and a partnership was born. “Village Pub was in the planning stages for well over a year before it opened its doors,” the owners told us. The partners made the decision to hire George Kessinger as their consultant on the creation of the bar based on his phenomenal successes with not one, but three Georgie’s Alibis. “While the overall design and concept came from George, each and every one of the partners added their own input. This collaborative effort is responsible for the successful format and design that we now provide.” The bar is already a year old (time flies), but the owners don’t intend on neglecting it anytime soon. “Although the bar has only been open for a year, we realize that the bar is a living thing and must be continually cared for and fed,” they told us. “We have many ideas for the future that will continue to enhance the Village Pub experience for our loyal patrons. It is when businesses get comfortable that they begin to get lazy and start to fail. We have no intention of ever getting comfortable and will always look for ways to keep the bar fresh and inviting. In the coming months we plan to offer more in the way of live entertainment and will also be hosting several events throughout the season.” The bar sponsors a number of athletic teams and LGBT charities and organizations, many of which will be hosting fund raising events at the bar in the future as well. “Our friendly and efficient staff will always be on hand to provide a welcoming experience and reinforce our Village Pub motto, ‘Familiar Faces...Fresh Ideas.’” For a full list of Village Pub’s anniversary events (Oct 7-13), check out our calendar next week, or visit villagepubwm.com.
Tallahassee, FL – Effective October 1, roughly three million Floridians have become eligible to receive affordable health insurance through the Insurance Marketplace (former Exchanges), created by Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as “Obamacare.” According to Equality Florida, LGBT Floridians should understand that Obamacare does not only benefit low-income Americans. A family of four that makes up to $97k would qualify for federal tax credits to help supplement the cost of the insurance. The ACA also eliminates any “pre-existing condition” exclusions, so being turned down previous due to prior health issues is no longer a concern. Equality Florida also mention out2enroll.org – a new campaign designed to connect the LGBT community with affordable health coverage. To find out more, visit healthcare.gov.

Fort Lauderdale Is the City with Highest Concentration of Gay Couples Washington, D.C – Recently released information from the 2012 U.S. Census showed which cities have the highest number of same-sex couple households in the country. You may be surprised to learn that that city is Fort Lauderdale, where same-sex couples make up 2.8% of households. It may seem a little surprising that Fort Lauderdale beat out San Francisco (who placed third with 2.5%) and Seattle (they placed second with 2.6%). Chalk it up to our pride celebrations or our sandy beaches if you’d like, but either way, it’s a good day to be gay in Fort Lauderdale.

oscow, Russia – A prominent Russian LGBT activist, Alexey Davydov, died in Moscow at the age of 36 last week (after slipping into a coma) reports the Huffington Post. Davydov’s health was rumored to have been on the decline since a police riot in 2011 that left him with a broken arm. In his month spent in the hospital, Davydov found that he had acute kidney failure and spent large amounts of time undergoing dialysis. Police claim that they did not break Davydov’s arm, and neither the police nor the Russian Investigative Committee are looking into the beating. The young Russian activist has no surviving relatives, making it nearly impossible for friends and supporters to access his medical documents to pursue any legal options. Another prominent LGBT activist, Nikolai Alexeyev, was close to Davydov. “[Davydov] made an enormous contribution to the Russian LGBT movement since 2006,” Alexeyev shared on Facebook. “He never cared about arrests and attacks. He just pursued our mutual goal! He has no relatives. He dedicated all his life to activism. He was always next to me in the worst times, including the day my flat was raided by police and prosecution just a month ago.” Davydov was committed to his trade, even to the end. He was planning to attend a protest outside of the headquarters for the Sochi Olympics organization committee last week, but fell just before the protest. An online donation service helped pay for the cost of Davydov’s funeral, with a donation of $2,000 coming from actress and activist Tilda Swinton.

Mississippi Town Allegedly Rejected Gay Bar on Personal Bias
Rachel Maddow Says Republicans Will ‘Burn the Place Down’ New York, NY – After the federal government shut down at midnight, MSNBC threw on popular anchor Rachel Maddow. After Maddow appeared, she warned viewers that if they elect Republicans, they will “burn the place down.” Maddow played footage of Republican House members leaving Saturday as if they had just had a joyous meeting. “They did not seem like they were having a somber moment,” said Maddow. “This is happening because they like this tactic.” Before switching to an interview with Dave Weigel (of Slate), she made her radical statement: “Elect Republicans and they will burn the place down, and they like the sound of that.”
arma, Italy – Last week, Guido Barilla suffered from severe foot-in-mouth disease, candidly stating, “I would never make a [TV] spot with a homosexual family.” The statement, made on the Italian radio program La Zanzara, landed the exec in hot water with the LGBT community, facing a number of online petitions with thousands pledging to no longer use the company’s products. “Not out of lack of respect but because I do not see it like they do,” continued Barilla. “[My idea of] family is a classic family where the woman has a fundamental role.” When the show’s hosts said that the LGBT community do tend to cross paths with pasta from time to time, Barilla responded, “That’s fine. If they like our pasta and our communication, they can eat them. Otherwise, they can eat another pasta.” The remarks have now been masked by a public apology from Barilla himself on the company’s website. In the video, Barilla says that he has “a lot to learn about the lively debate concerning the evolution of the family,” pledging to meet with “representatives of the groups that best represent the evolution of the family.”
GAMBIA PRESIDENT CALLS HOMOSEXUALS ‘BIGGEST THREAT TO HUMAN EXISTENCE’
N
ew York, NY – In a recent United Nations address, the president of Gambia said that gays and lesbians are “more deadly than all natural disasters put together,” according to the Associated Press. The 48-year-old president is known for his antigay views, telling the gay and lesbian residents of Gambia to leave the country or they would be executed, back in 2008. At the United Nations General Assembly, Jammeh denounced gays and lesbians, saying that same-sex attraction is one of the three “biggest threats to human existence.” Jammeh first took power of the small West African country in 1994, and reportedly isn’t changing his views any time soon. According to a 2011 article from BBC News, Jammeh said that his critics can “go to hell.”

Shannon, MS – After Pat “PJ” Newton’s bar closed down (O’Hara’s), customers and friends urged her to reopen. According to the Huffington Post exclusive, there isn’t another gay bar for another 100 miles. After some convincing was done, Newton moved back to Shannon to reopen her business. The owner of the building leased Newton the space, and she began putting thousands of dollars into renovations. When Newton arrived at a Town Hall meeting to secure a local business license, she was met with a room full of town officials and local residents who had put together two petitions to keep her from reopening O’Hara’s. The petitions claimed it would negatively impact the town and its young people, without actually saying the word “gay” or “homosexual.” Newton filed a federal lawsuit on Tuesday, accusing Shannon’s mayor, Board of Aldermen, and the town itself of an unconstitutional denial for her application, citing preju-
dice against LGBT people. “There’s been discrimination that we can’t even imagine that goes on in towns like this. And most people just walk away from it because they don’t have the time or money or resources to pursue it. I’m blessed that I do.”

early six years ago, Rev. Frank Schaefer officiated his son’s same-sex wedding. Now, he’s being forced to stand trial before the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church for his actions, reports Penn Live. When Schaefer found out his son, Tim, was gay back in 2000, his stance on gay marriage changed completely. Though his church wouldn’t exactly welcome his 18-year-old son with open arms, Mr. Schaefer and his wife accepted their son for who he was. They embraced him. And thank God (quite literally) that they did, because at one point, their son even contemplated suicide. Fast forward to six years later. In 2006, Tim was finally in love. He found love, and wanted to devote the rest of his life to him. When Tim asked his father to preside over his marriage, Schaefer was taken aback. “We just love him so much – it was an honor to be asked,” Schaefer told Penn Live. “Had I said no to him, it would have negated all the affirmations we gave him for all those years...that we believe you are just as worthy and precious
in God’s sight as anybody else.” The ceremony took place in Massachusetts, who at the time had just legalized gay marriage. Now, 26 days before the church’s statute of limitations on breaches of the Book of Discipline expires, one of his congregants is filing a complaint against him.
“If being of a certain sexual orientation is who you are as a person, if that is genetic, who are we to say these persons do not have the same rights as everybody else?” – Rev. Frank Schaefer
COURTESY OF UMCCONNECTIONS.ORG
Rev. Frank Schaefer
Schaefer must stand trial, and possibly risks losing his ordination credentials. The story is particularly touching to me, as I grappled with acceptance in a religious household as well. I remember thinking to myself – “Will my mom and dad accept me for who I am, or will they kick me to the curb?” Thankfully, they accepted me with open arms. I was extremely fortunate. I knew the stories. I had friends who were kicked out of their homes for coming out. Now they’re either still on the streets or they bounced back and severed ties with their family. Neither seem ideal to me. The Schaefer family story offers a glimmer of hope for the future of LGBT youth: Schaefer’s love for his son outweighs any personal bias or belief (as it should). “To me this is a uman rights issue,” Schaefer said during an interview with his parish office, according to Penn Live. “If being of a certain sexual orientation is who you are as a person, if that is genetic, who are we to say these persons do not have the same rights as everybody else? I’m supposed to minister to everybody. That I feel is my call.”

NEW JERSEY ORDERED TO RECOGNIZE SAME-SEX MARRIAGES: GOV. CHRISTIE APPEALS

Gov. Chris Christie
Friday, the Republican governor appeared on CBS’s Tracy Smith Sunday. When asked if believes in same-sex marriage, Christie was clear: “I do not. But what I will tell you is that I understand that good people of goodwill have a difference of opinion on this. And so my view is, put it on the ballot. Let the people decide.” Christie favors civil unions, which offer gay and lesbian couples the benefits of marriage, without the actual title. Christie is now going head-to-head with his state, as many gay-rights advocates argue that marriage equality is a civil right and that it shouldn’t be allowed on the ballot.

for far too long. Let’s clear the way for equal rights for all families.” Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) also tried to sway Christie. “I am thrilled this court decision now brings us closer to fulfilling our nation’s promise of equality and I urge our governor and state attorney general to accept this ruling and finally give same-sex couples in New Jersey the equal rights they deserve,” said Mendez. “Every person should receive equal treatment, no matter who they love.” Following the announcement of Christie’s appeal on
BOB JAGENDORF
renton, NJ – Judge Mary Jacobson has ruled that New Jersey must recognize marriages between same-sex couples, but there’s still some gray skies ahead for Jerseyans. Originally, if the ruling wasn’t appealed, same-sex couples in New Jersey could start getting married October 21. The ruling by Jacobson was in response to a suit filed by six gay couples, arguing that the state should recognize civil unions as marriages in order to obtain federal benefits. “This unequal treatment requires that New Jersey extend civil marriage to same-sex couples to satisfy equal protection guarantees of the New Jersey Constitution as interpreted by the New Jersey Supreme Court...” said Jacobson. “Same-sex couples must be allowed to marry in order to obtain equal protection of the law under the New Jersey Constitution.” But now, Gov. Chris Christie – a potential candidate for the 2016 presidential election – says he will be appealing the judge’s ruling. On Monday, Christie’s administration asked New Jersey’s top state court to take an appeal of the judge’s ruling. Citing “far-reaching implications,” acting Attorney General John Hoffman wrote the request to the state Supreme Court, according to the Huffington Post. Usually, the state Supreme Court does not weigh in on cases until after an appeals court has ruled. Hoffman said he’s asking Jacobson to grand a stay, delaying the implementation date until a decision can be made. Democratic legislative leaders were outspoken at a news conference on Friday. “We know it’s going there so there should be no delay,” said Senate President Steve Sweeney. “By October 21st, people should know, yes or no.” Though Christie seems set in his ways with all signs pointing to an appeal, state reps are urging him to reconsider. “This is a great victory for civil rights and treating everyone equally under the law,” State Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-Essex) said in a statement, according to New Jersey On-Line. “October 21 should be a very exciting day for many loving New Jersey couples, and I hope Gov. Christie does the right thing and does not appeal,” she continued. “Justice has already been denied

South Florida’s Own Dame Edna The alter-ego of Australian Dadaist performer and comedian Barry Humphries, Dame Edna has had a successful run as one of the most recognizable female-impersonator characters. There is even an “autobiography” written by her and even credited in the non-fiction section of bookstores. Dame Edna began as a drab Australian housewife but has evolved into a superstar, megastar, and gigistar. Luckily, South Florida’s own Dame Edna takes some time off from her various performances to entertain gay bar patrons. At Alibi, Michael

Johnny’s Twink Factory Tuesdays Some factories produce household items intended for pragmatic uses. Whether it be cleaning supplies, gadgets, or even food products, the idea of factory connotes hard labor with minimal down time and loads of stress. Car manufacturing factories in Detroit helped contribute to both the ascent and then descent of the city. Here in South Florida we have a totally different factory producing a household item intended for mass consumption: the twink. What other area of the world produces such a large amount of twinks in such mass quantities? Fortunately for us, Johnny’s continues our legacy of creating the most durable twinks with their Twink Factory Tuesdays. With no cover and $5 “twinkie” shots, the night is sure to be useful. 4 p.m. Johnny’s Fort Lauderdale. 1116 W Broward Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

Portugal, The Man This independent American rock band has achieved noteworthy success in the last year. Their new album, collaborated with Danger Mouse, entitled Evil Friends was released to wide acclaim on June 4th. This album is a darker detour for the psychedelic rock bank, complete with mournful lyrics like “I’m a creepy in a t-shirt and jeans. I don’t f#$%ing care.” Vocalist John Courley’s angelic voice emits a sense of optimism, though, and other songs veer into positivity. Opening for the band is Crystal Fighters. 8 p.m. Revolution Live. 100 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

In the 1980s Sarah Brightman was a gay household name. With her legendary performance as Christine Daae in The Phantom of the Opera (reportedly a role written exclusively for her), Brightman won the hearts of gay men everywhere trying to have their own romantic entanglements with the phantom or, more healthily, Raoul. Not only was she a superstar performer, but she was also married to the superstar composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber. Like most famous men, he cheated on her, and they have since divorced. Her career lives on, though, and she is considered the best-selling soprano of all time. Her fame has increased to such a degree that even the earth isn’t enough for her— she is currently preparing to journey to outer space in 2015. Come check her out before the universe beckons. 8 p.m. BB&T Center. 1 Panther Pkwy, Sunrise, 33323.

PIGEON FORGE, TENNESSEE: MORE THAN JUST DOLLYWOOD
October 2, 2013 H 16

BY RICK KARLIN
I
n Pigeon Forge, Tennessee’s version of Orlando (thanks to Dollywood), there are a number of options for lodging, including cabins, luxury hotels, inexpensive motels and a wide variety of B&B choices. There is even a gay-owned facility in the nearby city of Gatlinburg (check out gay-gatlinburg. com). Gatlinburg’s about the only gay thing you’ll find in the area (but with all the entertainers Dollywood employees, I bet you can ferret something out). Pigeon Forge and the surrounding area do offer some special events, which are a big tourist draw. Among those are the 9th Annual Gatlinburg Fine Arts Festival (Oct. 4 – 6) and the Great Smoky Christmas Arts & Crafts Show (December 2 – 8), which brings together a multitude of artists, musicians, and craftsmen and admission is free. For more information on the Gatlinburg Fine Arts Festival, check out gfaf.net. Even without those special events, the area offers hundreds of ways to keep you busy. Among some of my favorites are; Bluff Mountain Adventures, which offers guided ATV trail rides on 6,000 acres of mountain trails. Country Tonite Theatre features large-scale production numbers with singers, dancers, musicians and comics. The 1,500-seat multi-million dollar theatre is equipped with state-of the art sound and lighting and often features well-known country performers. The Elvis Museum is almost as campy as Dolly herself. It houses over 15,000 square feet of all Elvis, including his last limousine and his world famous $250,000.00 ring. A visit to the gift shop is a must. Record-A-Song Recording Studios allows you to go karaoke one better by recording your favorite song to any of thousands of background tracks. You can be a recording star for less than $20! Smoky Mountain Ziplines has some of the best zipline and canopy tours in the area. Wildwater rafting, tubing and kayak rentals offer a chance for outdoor adventures as weather permits. For information on these and other attractions, go to mypigeonforge.com Of course, my main reason for going is to experience the change of seasons and the best place to do that is Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Whether you delight in a strenuous hike to the crest of a mountain or prefer to sit quietly and watch the sunset, Great Smoky Mountains National Park offers a myriad of activities for you to enjoy. Try biking through Cades Cove on a misty summer morning, or choose from over 800 miles of trails ranging from quiet walkways to multi-day backpacking treks through the backcountry. The hardest part may be choosing which auto tour, trail, waterfall, overlook, or which historic area to explore. The park also has hundreds of miles of horse trails and four rental stables provide mounts and guides. For more information about the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, call 1-800-365-2267 or go to nps. gov/grsm.

For boulder shoulders, stand by an immovable object like a wall or a tree. Step forward and lean on the surface with arms straight. Push against the surface with your hands keeping your arms straight for a few seconds, then slowly release tension. Pump your pectorals by standing with palms against each other in front of the chest, elbows out. Press palms together with equal force. Hold for a few seconds then slowly release tension. Attack your back by sitting on the ground with your left leg straight out. Raise and bend the right leg and grasp the flexed right foot with both hands. Pull the foot back as it presses outward. Hold for a few seconds, then slowly release tension and change leg positions to work the other side. Combine these isometrics with pushups, crunches, lunges and chin-ups and you’ll have a mighty pump in no time! For more ways to get pumped, contact trainertomb@aol.com or call Tom at 954-557-1119. Set up a free intake today at Pumpn’Inc. 1271 NE 9th Ave. Fort Lauderdale, Fl.

ometimes a guy just needs a good muscle pump to bolster his confidence by the pool or at a party. At times the last place you want to go after work is a crowded noisy gym, but your muscles need a workout. You can still get pumped and primed and it only takes a few short minutes a day. It’s called isometrics and it goes all the way back to good old Charles Atlas himself! Isometrics is a sure fire, dynamite way to get those muscles pumped without clanking or pumping an ounce of iron. Isometric exercise is defined as muscles working against a static resistance (a wall, a tree, or even another muscle group), expending energy but not moving. Muscle strength and power increase as muscles contract. The great thing about isometrics is that it’s resistance training without weights. All you need is that great body of yours because opposing muscle groups do the work. Perform each exercise slowly and intently. Build tension gradually and do only 3 reps of each exercise at a time. Isometrics can give you a great ass without doing a single lunge. Simply stand with hands behind head, and clench your butt cheeks together as tightly as possible. Hold for a few seconds, then slowly release tension. You can do these bi and tri exercises anywhere, even in line waiting for a cocktail! First, pump those biceps. Stand with the left arm bent at a 90-degree angle, hand fisted, and the right hand grasping the left wrist. As the left arm pushes up, the right hand pulls down. Hold for a few seconds, then slowly release tension and switch arm positions to work the right bicep. To work triceps, stand with the left arm bent, hand fisted. Grasp the left wrist with the right hand and push up with the right arm as the left arm presses down. Hold for a few seconds, then slowly release tension as you swap arm positions to work the right triceps.

DELIA’S SCONES BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY
T
he word scone may derive from the Gaelic term “sgonn” meaning a shapeless mass or large mouthful. Or, perhaps, the word is based on the town of Scone in Scotland. The pronunciation of the word varies. According to one academic study, two-thirds of the British population pronounce it rhyming with “con” and “John,” the rest pronounce it rhyming with “cone” and “Joan.” The difference in pronunciation is alluded to in this poem: “ I asked the maid in dulcet tone To order me a buttered scone The silly girl has been and gone And ordered me a buttered scone”
• 3 cups all-purpose flour • 1/2 cup white sugar • 5 teaspoons baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 3/4 cup butter • 1 egg, beaten • 1 cup milk (my mam always uses buttermilk)

RECIPE
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F and lightly grease a baking sheet. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the butter. Mix the egg and milk in a small bowl, and stir into flour mixture until moistened. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead briefly. The less you touch the lighter your scones will be. Roll dough out about 1/2 inch thick. Cut into rounds using a glass, or a cup, and place on the prepared baking sheet. Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven, or until slightly browned. Serve warm, buttered, and with raspberry jam and whipped cream…They are frickin delish… You are a chef.

(thankfully Gilbert’s serves beer and wine), our food was already arriving. My friend had the corn chowder (soup of the day, $3.95) before he dove into his mahi-mahi, which of course, was tender, flavorful and fresh. While I’m no expert on corn chowder, I’d be willing to wager that Gilbert’s has the best in the area. My friend’s meal was fantastic and he was pleased, which is great, but let’s get to the real star here: the brie burger ($11.95). I can’t say that I was surprised (I heard in advance that it was one of the best burgers in town), but I was definitely impressed. The gooey brie and fried onions made for a wonderful combination of textures, with a perfect medium-well-pink in the center. The sweet potato fries that came with my burger were phenomenal. Of course they’re made fresh daily too. I was so stuffed from my flavorful, rich meal that I couldn’t even think about the idea of dessert as Mrs. Gilbert came over to check on us. “What about a cookie?” she asked. “I really shouldn’t-” I started, but before I could finish my thought, I was standing in front of the dessert case picking out a giant rocky road cookie. Delicious, soft (she warmed it up for us) and comforting, this homemade cookie was the perfect end to my unintentionally heavy meal. Mrs. Gilbert told me next time I come back, I better order her famous homemade key lime pie or cheesecake ($5.95). Challenge accepted, Mrs. Gilbert. The Gilberts have been making food for different cities throughout the country for over 40 years now, and it shows. Though the food is great and made fresh to order, Gilbert’s leaps over competition effortlessly because of one thing: service. The best thing about Gilbert’s is that when you’re there, you’re family. Next time you’re there, tell them Florida Agenda sent you.

here’s a reason that Gilbert’s is so popular with the locals – it’s delicious, homemade, and affordable. The Gilbert family has over 40 years of experience in the food service industry, and has been serving South Florida for the past 10. When we arrived at Gilbert’s, we were greeted just steps inside by Mrs. Gilbert herself. It’s not unusual to see the family behind the counter: it’s a true family-owned restaurant. You’ll likely be greeted by Gilbert’s kind son behind the counter when you order, and Mrs.Gilbert will continue to check up on you and see how things are going throughout the meal. In South Florida, a kind family-run business is a breath of fresh air. The restaurant, which prides itself on its burgers, only uses certified Angus beef, with everything made to order in an open format kitchen. If you’re not in the mood for a burger, fear not – Gilbert’s has an enticingly diverse menu. Since I was craving something light, the sesame seared tuna with homemade Asian cole slaw ($12.95) special caught my eye. Before I could decide, I was scanning their salads, being further tempted by the spinach salad with sun dried tomatoes, bacon and goat cheese ($9.95). Suddenly, I found myself lost in a battle of the entrees. Sliced flank steak with mushrooms and onions ($15.95), or a full rack of baby back ribs ($23.95)? “The rub for the ribs is made fresh here,” said Mrs. Gilbert. She could tell I was having a tough time deciding. While I mulled over my choices, Mrs. Gilbert recommended a burger. “Our burgers are our most popular item. They’re made to order with certified Angus beef,” she continued. “I recommend the brie burger.” I moved down the menu to the burger section, and read the description – “8 ounces of certified Angus beef, melted brie cheese and fried onions on top.” Sold. Goodbye, salad. After my friend ordered his grilled mahi-mahi sandwich ($10.95), we sat down at a table and got comfortable. Before I could drink half of my Heineken
