I have the good fortune, if I decide to run for Governor in a few days, I’ll do everything in my authority to try to help.” He then went on to discuss gay marriage, saying that since we have evolved and accepted various minorities over the years, it’s only natural to embrace marriage equality. “It’s important for us to respect all others, not to tell people who to love, and not to tell people who to marry.”

FAU Student Denied a Laptop Because He’s Gay Boca Raton, FL – Abdul Asquith was “appalled,” “embarrassed” and “distraught” after being denied a laptop at the Florida Atlantic University Wimberly Library last week, according to NBC. Asquith,

an openly-gay male, was told that he could not check out a laptop because he did not look like the man in the picture of his school ID. “She looked down at the ID, and said, ‘You sound, look, and act like a girl and in this ID is a man, therefore I’m not giving you a laptop.’ It looks just like me. I identify with my ID. I wasn’t there dressed up. I didn’t have on a dress. I wasn’t dressed in character.” Asquith says that sometimes he wears feminine clothing, but on the day of the incident, he was wearing shorts and a hoodie with his hair pulled back. Asquith eventually checked out a laptop after asking three different librarians to look at his ID card. The University has yet to issue a statement.

Orlando, FL – Over the weekend, local LGBT activist Michael Rajner met up with former Florida Governor Charlie Crist to discuss issues involving the LGBT community. Crist was in town for the 2013 Florida Democratic Party State Conference at the Disney Yacht Club and Resort in Orlando, according to a blog post from Rajner. “During our private meeting in his hotel suite, Crist and I discussed our departure from the Republican Party and how we aligned ourselves with the Democratic Party because it values

and prioritizes the needs of all people,” Rajner wrote in an e-mail. “We spoke candidly about our families and life experiences, and I reminded him of a public dialogue we once had relating to abstinence-only sex education and how it fails to factor in the needs of LGBTQ youth and at-risk youth. We also discussed the staggering impact of HIV/AIDS in Florida and how South Florida leads the nation with the highest rates of new HIV-infections.” In a special video Crist agreed to record following the private meeting, the former Governor had hopeful words for the Florida LGBT community. “I think it’s important that we do everything we can to address [HIV/ AIDS], and to stop discrimination against those who suffer from it,” Crist said. “Everybody needs help and deserves it. t was recently discovered that Herman Rowland Sr., chairman of Jelly Belly Candy, recently donated $5,000 to a cause that isn’t so sweet. Rowland made a donation in September (which was just recently discovered) to Privacy for All Students, a group that strives to repeal legislation that gives transgender students in California access to the bathrooms, locker rooms, sport teams and other school facilities and activities that students are bound to by gender-identities. In a letter posted on Buzzfeed, four leaders from different LGBT groups – the National Center for Transgender Equality, the Transgender Law Center, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and Equality California – said that California was not the only state in the country with the law, and that the piece of legislature provides students with an

environment that enables them to learn and grow as individuals. Of course, Rowland’s donation is a drop in a bucket of water. He was not the biggest donor to the referendum effort. The largest donor so far is Sean Fieler, of Equinox Partners, who has given $150,000 to the effort. Pacific Justice Institute, Calvary Chapel Chino Hills and Larry Smith of MHI Real Estate all donated $10,000 each. “While we understand that some people may have never known a transgender person and may have questions and concerns, the full and equal inclusion of transgender students does not infringe upon the rights of any person,” the four individuals wrote. “Unfortunately, the campaign to repeal the law has relied on extremely misleading scare tactics, misrepresents who transgender youth are, and advances hypothetical scenar-

ios that haven’t occurred in the years that these types of policies have been in place in California and across the country. Repealing the School Success and Opportunity Act would only serve to hurt promising young students who are often already marginalized.” Rowland’s actions are disheartening. With the recent inclusion of genderneutral restrooms in Philadelphia’s cityowned businesses, the situation is polarizing to say the least. While we’ve seen same-sex marriage slowly gain momentum over the past few years, at times it feels like transgender rights are still lightyears behind. It’s a sticky situation Rowland, who is already getting serious heat from several other LGBT publications and blogs. The letter asks Rowland to set up a time to meet in order to discuss the future of the policy, but as of press time, the chairman has yet to respond.

STEVE GRAND SHOWS SUPPORT FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY

S

inging sensation, and now gay rights activist, Steve Grand was one of the prominent celebrities to attend the “March on Springfield.” The demonstration, held at the capital of Illinois, was designed to show support for legislation that would legalize same-sex marriage in that state. If successful, Illinois will be the fifteenth state to allow such marriages. Mr. Grand, who will be performing in South Florida at the Sunshine Cathedral, among other locations, is a native of Illinois.

Honolulu, HI – Hawaii could be the 15th state to allow marriage equality, depending on the outcome of a special legislative session called to order this week by Gov. Neil Abercrombie. NPR reports that gay marriage was in a “gray area” after 1993, when the state’s supreme court ruled in favor of the unions. A constitutional amendment was adopted five years later that took away jurisdiction from the courts

Washington, D.C. – On Monday afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev) announced that he will hold a vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act before Thanksgiving. Though Reid did not list a specific date, a vote could take place as early as next week. ENDA would ban discrimination in the workplace regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. Reid has been a long-time supporter of ENDA, cosponsoring it first in 1997. Introduced in April by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), the bill currently has 55 cosponsors, including Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), who just recently signed on. “I thank Majority Leader Reid for committing to bring ENDA to the floor this work period,” Merkley told The Huffington Post. “Americans understand that it’s time to make sure our LGBT friends and family are treated fairly and have the same opportunities. Now it’s time for our laws to catch up. People should be judged at work on their ability to do the job, period.” Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) are the only two Republican cosponsors, though ENDA supports are hopeful that other GOP senators will vote for the bill once on the floor.

Washington, D.C. – Chris Brown is due to appear in court Monday on an assault charge that could potentially affect his current legal woes. According to a report from the Associated Press, Brown and his bodyguard, Christopher Hollosy, were charged with felony assault after an altercation with a 20 year-old male outside of a D.C. hotel. The victim, identified as Isaac Adams Parker, attempted to join in on a photo being taken of Brown, when the singer told him “I’m not into that gay s***.” Brown then said “I feel like boxing,” before punching Parker in the face, according to the D.C. Police report. Bodyguard Christopher Hollosy then stepped in between the two, punching Parker yet again in the face. Both were held by police until their Monday court hearing. Brown was supposedly in town for an event known as “Homecoming Weekend,” taking place at a downtown club. Though Howard University was celebrating their homecoming, a university spokeswoman said that the party was not sponsored or affiliated with the school. The Grammy-winning singer is currently on probation for assaulting his on-again, off-again girlfriend Rihanna back in 2009, so any violation could result in serious consequences.

and passed it over to Legislature, where is it then banned. Abercrombie previously said that he would not order the session until he was sure that there would be enough votes to pass the bill, but Hawaii News Now reports that enough lawmakers in both chambers have committed to the bill. Those opposed to the bill came out to testify against the bill on Monday morning at the state capitol in Honolulu. The National Organization for Marriage aired an anti-gay ad over the weekend which claimed that should same-sex couples marry, they would be dishonoring the Hawaiian tradition of “ohana,” which means family. If approved, the measure would take effect on November 18.

BEST NATURAL SOURCE OF VITAMIN C? Q: I get colds all the time and my doctor says I should get more Vitamin C. The problem is the best source, orange juice, gives me heartburn. Can you recommend another source of Vitamin C? – Glenn, Wilton Manors A: The Camu Camu fruit is reported to be the plant world’s most abundant natural source of vitamin C. Found in the rainforests of the Amazon and available in capsules at health stores in the United States, this superfruit works wonders in boosting your immune system and overall health. The Camu berry has 2 g of vitamin C per 100 g of fruit or about 50 times the amount of Vitamin C found in an orange. I recommend a brand such as Fruitients X which is grown naturally and is free of all preservatives, artificial flavors, chemicals and additives. Considered by many natural health gurus to be even more valuable than the “miraculous” acai berry, the benefits of supplementing with Camu Camu

are numerous. Rich in antioxidants, it strengthens your immune system while its antiviral properties fight conditions such as herpes, cold sores and the common cold. It energizes the body, reduces inflammation, promotes healthy gums, eyes and skin, fights depression and supports a healthy lymphatic and nervous system. WORKOUT TIP Switch up your regular weight training in the gym by introducing exercises involving dumbbells. Using dumbbells allows your wrists to be pronated (palms down) and supinated (palms up), changing the angles at which a particular exercise is performed. This is great for hitting muscles not always reached through the use of machines or other equipment. Using dumbbells also allows you to train each arm individually, identifying and

improving strengths or weaknesses of a particular arm. TRUE COLORS: TRAVELING IN THE FALL

TRAVEL

BY RICK KARLIN

F

orget the red, white and blue, America is at her best when she shows her true colors in autumn. Fall foliage tours have become a massive tourist industry in the past decade or so and native Floridians who have never experienced the majesty of watching Mother Nature work her paintbrush in the fall will have a real treat if they plan a trip to somewhat chillier climes this time of year. The weather is usually brisk enough to require a sweater and warm jacket, but not so cold as to be unpleasant. To get the full effect head up to New England. A quick plane trip to one of the major cities in the area can afford you easy access for day trips out to the country. Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Pennsylvania , Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts all offer picturesque settings to catch this colorful phase of photosynthesis. Maine’s top routes include Route 17 from the coastal city of Rockland to the state capital of Augusta, as well as the areas around Sebago Lake, near Portland, and Baxter State Park, in center of the state. In Vermont, head to the center of the state along Routes 100, 107, 12

and 106 for an 88-mile loop through Gaysville, Barnard, Woodstock, Ludlow and Killington. New Hampshire’s White Mountains (start in Jackson) provide a wonderfully scenic tour. Connecticut’s US Route 44 takes you through Natchaug State Forest, or hit Old Saybrook on State Route 154. In Pennsylvania, head to Bucks County (stay in New Hope, the Wilton Manors of Pennsylvania) or Lancaster. New York’s Hudson River Valley’s Point Lookout Inn’s elevated panoramic view a five-state perspective. It’s easily accessible via the Palisades Interstate Parkway. The Adirondack and Catskill Mountains and the Finger Lakes region are also good spots for leaf-watching. Massachusetts, though not as well known for its fall foliage offers a couple of special options. The Mohawk Trail offers a riotous explosion of autumn color blankets the streamside trail at Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls. For the ultimate GLBT fall foliage excursion, head to Provincetown. Fly into Boston and take the ferry out to P-Town, or rent a car and enjoy fall colors on the 2-3 hour drive. If you like to travel with your pooch, you’ll be

happy to know that Provincetown is a dog-friendly place. Many, if not most, of the lodgings allow pets, and your dog ill love taking a walk along the trails you hike to see the autumnal colors. Cape Cod is breathtakingly beautiful on brisk fall days and most of the shops and restaurants are open until Thanksgiving. Nearly every motel, hotel and B&B offers fall packages and specials. For example, at the Harbor Hotel (harborhotelptown.com), the room rate (including breakfast) is the temperature at 2p.m. (the average temperature in November ranges from the mid-40s to the low 60s). The hotel also bikes you can borrow for a quick spin around town or over to the dune trails. Some of the shops along Commercial Street will be closed after Halloween, but those that are open will offer deep discounts on

merchandise so they can clear out their stock before boarding up for the winter. For special rates on lodging and package deals, check out ptown.org/specials and ptownchamber.com/specials. Some November events in Provincetown include the Beaux Arts Ball on the 2nd, Men’s Weekend the 9th through11th (PtownMensWeekend.com), the Thanksgiving Weekend arts and crafts Fair and the lighting of the Lobster Pot Tree in Lopes Square on the 30th. For all of these options, remember to pack a good pair of hiking books or walking shoes. While most of the routes are drivable, you’re going to want to get out and walk the trails and pathways to fully appreciate the experience. For more ideas, check out U.S. Forest Service’s web site, fs.fed.us/fallcolors, or call its hotline 800-354-4595.
