SUNSHINE STATE NOVEMBER 20, 2013 • ISSUE 209
Does Your Mayor Support the Freedom to Marry? Tallahassee, FL – Florida is home to approximately 400 mayors that serve the citizens of the enormous sunshine of state. But you may be surprised to know that out of 400 of those mayors, only 32 have shown support in Equality Florida’s recent national campaign, Mayors for the Freedom to Marry. The shocking result was reported on Equality Florida’s blog, by a Public Policy intern for Equality Florida Gainesville, named Jordan Vaal. “The goal is that a large portion of mayors across the state will show support for this cause,” Vaal wrote. “By doing so, our state officials will begin to see how much support exists in every corner of our state for marriage equality.” For the past two weeks, the organization has been reaching out to all the current mayors of Florida, asking them to sign onto the campaign to show their support. “As a resident of this beautiful state, I went into this project expecting a copious amount of Florida mayors to either already be signed onto the campaign, or to sign on
with haste,” said Vaal. “However, from the start of this project, only 32 mayors (out of 400) throughout all of Florida had signed onto this campaign. With marriage equality being such a salient issue throughout the nation, all of our mayors need to step up as leaders on this issue.” If your mayor has not signed onto the Mayors for the Freedom to Marry campaign, you can petition for them to sign on at: http://www.freedomtomarry.org/pages/ mayors-for-the-freedom-to-marry
Marco Rubio Delivers Keynote Address at Anti-Gay Fundraiser Orlando, FL – As reported last week by the Florida Agenda, Florida senator Marco Rubio spoke at a right wing conference on Saturday hosted by the Florida Family Policy Council, an openly-antigay group. Considered to be a top contender for the 2016 presidential nomination, Rubio argued that a Judeo-Christian influenced view of morality should take center stage, instead of the current decline of morality in
the United States. “The moral well-being of our nation is our business. It’s everybody’s business,” Rubio said during his 22-minute speech. “The debate we should be having isn’t whether or not we have a right to talk about values and morals in the public square, the debate we should be having instead is which values and morals our nation should focus on.” Rubio referenced the Declaration of Independence, saying that everything in “this unique and exceptional nation” flows from the “powerful truth” that man is “endowed by his creator with certain inalienable rights.” He then said that the nation’s abolition of slavewry and the end of racial segregation “are a direct result of this commitment to the value and worth of every human life.” Though he didn’t mention LGBT themes or issues directly, they appear to be implied. The Associated Press reports that Rubio’s speech was placed between videos of the group’s president, John Stemberger, where he undermined marriage equality, opposed gay scoutmasters in the Boy Scouts, and warned followers of the dangers of transgendered individuals becoming school teachers.

SMART RIDE 10 RAISES $1,047,514 THIS YEAR ith over 5,000 riders, volunteers, donors and community supporters participating this year in SMART Ride, the popular charity event, was able to raise well over a million dollars for the cause. All those participating in the annual bike ride from Miami to Key West, gathered on Saturday afternoon, after two days and 165 miles of biking, for an emotional closing ceremony to bring SMART Ride 10 to a triumphant conclusion. The funds raised will go to the “education, prevention, direct services and ultimately care for those affected by HIV/AIDS,” stated Glen, a spokesman for SMART Ride. The top fundraiser was Timothy Haymon, who raised $23,100. A check ceremonies party will follow at ArtServe, on Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, on January 11th, 2014.

Springfield, IL – Bishop Thomas Paprocki claims that same-sex marriage comes from the devil and therefore, will be offering “prayers of supplication and exorcism in reparation for the sin of same-sex marriage. Coincidentally, he will be offering exorcisms the same day that marriage equality will be signed into law by Illinois governor Pat Quinn. “The context for this prayer service may be understood by recalling the words of Pope Francis when he faced a similar situation as archbishop of
Washington, D.C. – Liz Cheney and sister, Mary Cheney, have taken their arguments on marriage equality to a very public level. After Wyoming Senate hopeful Liz Cheney said that she opposed marriage equality, despite the fact that her sister is a lesbian, Dick and Lynne Cheney got involved in the family matter. On Sunday, Liz Cheney told Fox News Sunday that she opposed a ban on samesex marriage and supported the State Department’s offering of benefits to same-sex partners of employees, but Liz also said that she was for “the traditional definition of marriage.” She said that she still loves her sister Mary. Mary Cheney was quick to fight back via Facebook: “Liz – this isn’t just an issue on which we disagree – you’re just wrong – and on the wrong side of history.” Mary’s Wife, Heather Poe, also said that Liz Cheney’s words were hurtful. Dick and Lynne stepped in to publicly address the spat: “This is an issue we have dealt with privately for many years, and we are pained to see it become public,” said Lynne and Dick Cheney, the former vice president, in a statement made Monday, according to Politico. “Since it has, one thing should be clear. Liz has always believed in the traditional definition of marriage.” They went on to say that Liz has also “treated her sister and her sister’s family with love and respect, exactly as she
should have done. Compassion is called for, even when there is disagreement about such a fundamental matter and Liz’s many kindnesses shouldn’t be used to distort her position.”

ing why they are so reluctant to support the issue. Though a number of recent polls show that the public opinion on marriage equality has shifted dramatically, the GOP, including their potential nominees for the 2016 presidential election, are still refusing to budge on the issue. “As public opinion goes, this is a public opinion train that has left the station,” said Maddow during the segment. She then went on to list numerous poll results that highlighted various areas that now favor marriage equality. Maddow believes that the GOP is out of touch with the majority of America. “The country has really made its decision on equal rights for gay people, including on marriage,” she said. “If national Republican hopefuls don’t see the polling [on marriage equality], don’t see which way this is going, there will certainly be national competing national candidates who do see. And they will win while these guys lose.”

New York, NY – The recently crowned winner of the Miss Universe Pageant says that trans women should not be eligible for the competition because it is an event that’s “made for women.” Formerly Miss Venezuela, Gabriela Isler said that she thinks transgendered women should not be allowed to compete for the title of Miss Universe and should instead be participating in pageants of their own, according to the Huffington Post. “They should have their own pageant, I think, and maybe they can realize in this pageant, Miss Universe, or the other pageants [were] made for women,” said Isler during an interview with Huff Post Live. “They are...they have the opportunity, but I think that they have to compete with the same...the same team. Right?” When looking at current policies and guidelines, you’ll notice that transgendered women are now allowed to participate in the competition, so Isler appears to be a flying solo on this one. Last year, the Miss Universe Pageant changed their non-discrimination policy to include transgendered women when contestant Jenna Talackova sued the organization after being disqualified. She went on to place in the top 12, and became one of the four women who were given the title of Miss Congeniality.
Buenos Aires in 2010,” said Paprocki in a recent diocesan press release. The words referenced by Paprocki took place when Argentina was about to approve marriage equality, and the soon-to-be pope said that the move “may gravely harm the children.” “Pope Francis is saying that samesex ‘marriage’ comes from the devil and should be condemned as such,” said Paprocki. The bishop will be conducting the service from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield.

Broward County residents affected by HIV/AIDS, Poverello will be collecting dry/canned goods, personal hygiene items and nonperishable food for our Holiday Food Drive,” said Ron Wudarsky of Poverello. “Should individuals forget to bring a present to donate, Poverello will offer opportunities to make cash donations by texting ‘EAT’ to 50555 as well as through mobile credit card purchases.” Out of the Closet provides free HIV and STD testings for everyone, courtesy of AHF. This means when families are shopping at Out of the Closet, not only are they able to afford things needed, they’re helping the community out as well. “What people don’t realize is that when we turn around and sell their items, we give back 96 cents per dollar to the organization (AHF), for both prevention and treatment,” said Paul Stanley of AHF. “Every little bit helps.” The giving doesn’t stop there. Rainbow Friday transcends human rights as well this year, helping out a number of local furry friends in need. “We are excited that folks will have the opportunity to think of the furry friends that desperately need help,” said Matt LaMariana of the Animal Rescue Fund, which will be represented by Boomerang’s Thrift Store. The Pet Project, an organization that provides pet supplies and food to individuals who are financially challenged due to health reasons (including clients living with HIV/AIDS), is also involved in the drive. “I think [Rainbow Friday] is a nice idea, because I believe that most people want to help those who are less fortunate than themselves and this is a convenient opportunity,” said Sue Martino from the Pet Project. “We struggle continually

This will be an opportunity for us to raise needed funds for our pet food bank. The Pet Project for Pets provides pet food, pet supplies and pet vaccinations to those who are finan-
cially challenged due to terminal illness, disability, aging and victims of crime to enable them to keep their pets.” Rainbow Friday will take place on November 29, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Alibi parking lot. For more information, visit RainbowFriday.org

ilton Manors, FL – Once a year, people line up for hours on end to score a few measly deals. Ironically, it’s the day after Thanksgiving – a holiday that is dedicated to giving thanks to all that we are lucky enough to have. That cursed day after Thanksgiving, known by the dark alias Black Friday, causes countless injuries, violence, and even death (a man was trampled to death in a New York Wal-Mart back in 2008). The sales are typically great, but are they really worth the stress and violent behavior? This year, Holy Angels Catholic Community will be presenting the first annual Rainbow Friday. According to the staff at Holy Angels, the idea behind Rainbow Friday is to make Black Friday not only the biggest shopping day, but also the biggest giving day. One of the great joys of Christmas is shopping for that perfect gift for the perfect person. Unfortunately, there are way too many people who have limited budgets and cannot afford to go to the retail stores and shop. This year, the Holy Angels want to “give the gift of giving.” Holy Angels has partnered with Boome– rangs, Hidden Secrets (Pet Project), Out of the Closet and Poverello to organize a donation drive so that they will have an abundance of items so those in need can have options for holiday shopping. Everyone is encouraged to bring “gift quality” items to the event on the Friday after Thanksgiving to the donation stations set up by the non profit thrift stores in the Alibi parking lot. DJ Maximus 3000 will be providing music during the event to make this a festive holiday season kick-off block party. “Being that Poverello provides food and basic necessities for low-income

hether you are searching for the right career, scoping out a new place to live or planning a vacation, life is all about making right choices. Building your body also requires you to make key decisions. Finding a great gym, making the time to workout and varying your routines all require proper planning. While these are crucial factors, it’s your nutritional choices that will make or break you. Eating “right” requires knowledge and planning. Certainly the best nutritional strategy is to shop for and prepare your own healthy meals consisting of good clean organic foods. There is nothing better than a diet consisting of complex, low-glycemic index carbohydrates, lean fresh protein sources and very low amounts of poly-unsaturated fat. While the above plan is ideal, the reality is, most of us spend a lot of time eating out or eating on the run in restaurants and fast food joints. A few visits to these places every week will pile on the pounds in no time! Here are a few pointers about restaurant eating that can keep you lean and on track with your fitness goals. Breakfast or brunch on the weekend with friends can be a pleasure, but in one sitting you can literally consume your daily calorie requirements of fats and carbs. Ask for egg beaters when ordering an omelet. Avoid bagels and Danish and opt instead for an English muffin or a couple of pieces of whole grain toast. Try unbuttered grits with a little fresh salsa instead of hash browns.
Avoid processed meats like bacon and sausage. A sandwich for lunch sounds simple and convenient. Yet, it’s not just burgers that are lethal, those deli sandwiches can be just as deadly. Between those slices of bread lurk some serious calorie pitfalls like mayo, salad dressing, several servings of salty cold cuts, and loads of fattening cheese. Choose whole-grain breads or better yet, a wrap and grilled chicken instead of ham, roast beef, tuna or chicken salad. Only order half a sandwich and avoid those super sizes. Pasta is good energy food, but request a half portion and you’ll save hundreds of calories. Eat pasta earlier in the day so that the carbs fuel the rest of the day’s activities. If it’s available, choose a healthy whole-wheat pasta or spinach pasta for a more fiber-rich dish and pair it with a lean protein grilled portion of chicken or fish. Avoid cheesy calorie- dense dishes like ravioli, manicotti and lasagna. Sushi is a great healthy choice when dining out. Broiled fish, steamed veggies, edamame and tuna, yellowtail and salmon sashimi are all tasty and light Japanese fare. But unless you want to look like a sumo wrestler, steer clear of tempura and agemono, which indicate deep-fried. The time you put into your workouts is crucial. Yet it’s what you put into your mouth that will make or break your physique. For more tips on healthy choices contact TrainerTomB@aol.com! Check out www.pumpnincgym.com or call (954) 557 1119.

THURSDAY 11/21
FRIDAY 11/22
Buddy Guy and Jonny Lang
Living Legends: The Eagles
The Iconic Gladys Knight
For one night only, these two living blues stars play the Adrienne Arsht Center. After 60 years in the industry, Buddy Guy has certainly more than earned his title as a blues legend. His influence on the musicians of his generation is extensive, including Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Eric Clapton. He pioneered the Chicago blues sound. Jonny Lang, on the other hand, is only 32, young enough to be Guy’s grandchild. Having already won a Grammy for Turn Around, Lang is a blues prodigy as much as Guy is a legend. Tonight these two different generations meet, bringing the soul and energy of the electrifying blues sound to Miami like never before. 8 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center. 1300 Biscayne Blvd Miami, 33132.
The Eagles’ most popular song, “Hotel California”, deals with the excesses of Hollywood life in the 1970s. In it, a weary traveler checks into a tempting hotel that turns out to be a nightmare—sort of like a gay bar on a Friday night, a place you can check out of but never leave. Allegorical surrealistic epic songs aside, The Eagles is one of the most popular bands of their era, with seven number one singles, six Grammys, five American Music Awards, and six number one albums. Their 2013 tour coincides with a new documentary about the crew entitled The History of the Eagles. Recently, Don Henley proclaimed this tour possibly their last so try to catch them while you can. 8 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.
Gladys Knight may be a codependent relational attachment type—what with her declaration that she’d move to Georgia with her beau because she’d “rather live in his world/than live without him in mine”—but that doesn’t make her music any less beautiful. Since her heyday rocking it out with The Pips to her role in the blockbuster hit song “That’s What Friends Are For”, Gladys Knight has established herself as one of the premiere legendary divas still working today. Tonight her soft, soulful style bewitches the Hard Rock crowd. 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor If you know who the Time Lord is then maybe you haven’t been on a date in a while. Or, you’re super hot and just kind of into Doctor Who (that’s a thing, right?). The uber-popular and uber-nerdy (but in a sexy kind of way, right?) television program turns 50 and celebrates with a special entitled “The Day of the Doctor.” The show will be screened in more than 75 countries. Hope you don’t have any computer problems this day—it’s pretty definite tech support will be “busy.” 7:30 p.m. The Regal Cypress Creek Station 16. 6415 N Andrews Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33309.

Janelle Monáe’s sexuality has been a hot topic of her career, especially since some of her songs’ lyrics contain ambiguous hints at lesbian tendencies. In the press she has been evasive, at best, on answering such questions, but it doesn’t matter because with music as good as hers, the team she plays for is less important than the vocal offering. Her 2010 hit album Arachnoid became one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the year, complete with the smash song “Tightrope”. Her current album The Electric Lady continues with her brand of R&B and soul. 8 p.m. Filmore Miami Beach Jackie Gleason Theater. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.
in 3rd grade/I thought that I was gay/Cause I could draw”. After heavy rotation over the summer, the song has become a defining moment for gay rights in the hip-hop world. Tonight he’ll probably sing the song, you’ll be offended, but at least you’ll also kind of be like “Well, it’s so much better than him wanting us dead, which I believe Eminem has said before.” 7 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

RECIPE TIRAMISU BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY
M
y partner Vero is French, but her grandmother was Italian, and like all Italian “mamas” she ruled over the roost… Tiramisu is the dessert she would always bring to the table after the eternal leg of lamb à la Provençale we had every Sunday. She taught me this one, and it’s real easy ‘cause you don’t actually “bake” this. It’s simply layers of coffeesoaked biscuits and sweet mixture of mascarpone cheese and eggs and sugar. Cocoa powder is sifted on top (and sometimes between the layers) for the garnish and it’s also a bitter counterpoint to the sweetened cheese mixture.
To prepare the biscuit layer, ”Boudoirs” (light, finger-sized sponge cakes, you call ladyfingers here in the States) are soaked in espresso or strong coffee, often with an addition of flavorful liquor such as sweet Marsala wine or dark rum. Loads of variations for tiramisu exist. Some chefs use sponge cake or yeasted breads, like panettone, in place of ladyfingers. Other liquors are often used instead of the traditional Marsala wine in both the coffee and the cheese mixture, including dark rum, Madeira, port, brandy and cognac, I have even experimented with “Bailys Irish cream.” So you can
choose, and as I always say “you are the chef.” • Eggs, 3 large, with yolks and whites separated • Sugar, 1/2 cup • Mascarpone, 8 ounces • Ladyfingers, 20 • Espresso or Strong Coffee, 1 cup • Dark Rum, 1 tablespoon • Cognac or Brandy, 2 tablespoons • Cocoa, 1/8 cup • Shaved chocolate
Combine 3 egg yolks, 1 tablespoon of coffee, sugar, and Cognac in a large mixing bowl. Beat for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the Mascarpone and beat 3 to 5 minutes until the consistency is smooth. In another bowl, combine the 3 remaining egg whites and a pinch of sugar. Beat like mad until mixture forms stiff peaks, and then gently fold into the Mascarpone
mixture. Pour rest of the coffee into a “dipping” dish, with the rum and dip each Lady Finger, and layer them on the bottom of a serving dish. Spread 1/3 of Mascarpone mixture over that and sprinkle with cocoa. Continue layering and finish with a Mascarpone layer. Sprinkle with the shaved chocolate and refrigerate 1 hour before serving.

HOLIDAYS AT SEA
November 20, 2013 H 30

BY RICK KARLIN
W
hile there’s something to be said for being surrounded by family during the holiday season, there’s also something wonderful about being surrounded by a big blue ocean. Taking a cruise during the holidays can be a nice change of pace, or a reason to escape all the pressures of a family gathering. If you need an excuse, tell the folks you won the cruise, a little white lie never hurt anyone. If you do decide to spend the holidays on a cruise, there are some things to consider. Think about whether you’d like to spend holidays in port or at sea. Ships on a regular weekly schedule are likely to maintain their normal itineraries, so you may end up in a port on Christmas Day when everything’s closed but the cathedral and the beach. However, since the tourist dollar is so important, especially in these difficult economic times, many places choose to stay open. Carnival, for one, tells us that all the islands it visits during the holiday season keep stores open and excursions running so as not to lose out on those tourist dollars. Packing for a holiday cruise can be a little different from packing for a regular cruise. You’ll want to bring special holiday outfits for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. In addition to your tuxes and party dresses, you might consider acces-

sories such as Santa hats, reindeer antler headbands or other festive items you might want to wear. For Christmas or Hanukkah, consider decorating your cabin to get in the holiday spirit. Decorate your cabin doors with a wreath (pack one of those hooks that goes over the top of the door), to make your cabin’s interior more festive, pack a small artificial tree (disassemble it for easy packing), electric menorah (you can’t light candles in your cabin), strings of

lights or stockings. I’ve found Vacations to Go (vacationstogo.com, 800-3384962) an easy to navigate site for searching for bargains on cruises. When looking for cruises departing from Ft. Lauderdale or Miami, the ports of call tend to be heavily skewed toward those islands that are not particularly friendly toward GLBT travelers. However, after eliminating those cruises I was still able to come up with some pretty good deals should you want to spend the holidays aboard the high seas. The cruises that stop in the Bahamas on these cruises only stop at islands owned by the cruise lines. Celebrity offers five nights on its Constellation departing December 23, making stops in Key West and Cozumel, Mexico. An inside cabin runs $479, Florida residents can get one with an
ocean view for $655. Princess Cruises’Ruby Princess hits the Eastern Caribbean for four nights departing December 22. Most of the time is spent at sea with one stop at on Princess Cay (the cruise line’s private island). This is a real bargain with interior rooms going for $279 and ocean view room just $20 more, even a balcony room is just $399. Holland America’s Zuiderdam sails out of Ft. Lauderdale on December 20 for a seven night cruise, with stops at Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands, San Juan, Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Half Moon Cay, Bahamas. An inside cabin will run $599, one with an ocean view $649, and a balcony cabin is $799. The line’s Westerdam ships out for a seven night Eastern Caribbean cruise departing December 21. The ship stops
at Grand Turk Island, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Philipsburg, St. Maarten and Half Moon Cay. This cruise is a little less expensive than the Zuiderdam’s with interior cabins running $429, ocean views $499, and balcony for $549. At these prices you may want to splurge on a suite, only $799. If you purchase a resident rate fare, you will be required to present a valid driver’s license or stateissued ID at the pier to prove residency. The prices shown are US dollars per person, based on double occupancy, and subject to availability. They include port charges but do not include airfare or (where applicable) airport or government taxes or fees.
