SUNSHINE STATE Fort Lauderdale Tea Party Leader Worried by Gay “Thugs” Fort Lauderdale, FL – Danita Kilcullen, co-founder of Tea Party Fort Lauderdale, said that gay activists (also referred to as “thugs”) in the Log Cabin Republicans group are pushing progressive platforms and are taking over the party. Kilcullen wrote the message in an email in November when she expressed her dislike for nondiscrimination legislation, particularly the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). She said that the bill would force her to “hire someone with orange hair, body/neck/face covered with tattoos, multiple piercings, or a man in a dress … or for that matter, a demonstrative effeminate male or purposeful butch-looking female,” she wrote

in the e-mail, later obtained by the Sun-Sentinel. Kilcullen added, “The Log Cabins are the same lobbyist organization that has all but taken over BREC (Broward Republican Executive Committee) … Keep in mind, this is a thug organization with only their own ‘special interests’ in play.” Kilcullen is the same tea partier that was arrested in 2011 for kicking a police officer in the chest with her stiletto heel, and was accused of racism in 2013 when she responded to a tweet by singer Toni Braxton. In the tweet, which was a reaction the George Zimmerman verdict, Braxton said she was embarrassed to be an American if the government fails to protect all people. Kilcullen took to her Facebook to write a message directed at Braxton: “Yo, girl, you can’t take America’s justice system? Go be an African!!”

Tampa: A Top-Ranking Florida City for Gay Rights Orlando Wants LGBT Honeymooners Orlando, FL – Though same-sex marriage may not be legal in Florida, the city of Orlando still wants to sink its teeth into the growing market. This week, a new campaign launched that targets same-sex couples wishing to celebrate in Orlando. “Until Florida can get same-sex marriage legal, we are excited to be campaigning for newlyweds from [states that have legalized gay marriage] to select Orlando as their honeymoon destination of choice,” said Mikael Frank Audebert, executive director for Converge Orlando, the official LGBT Convention and Visitors Bureau for Orlando and Central Florida, according to examiner.com “Orlando offers over 35 different types of experiences. Why not make it a 3-5 day stop as part of a long Florida honeymoon? From theme parks to golfing, from kayaking our natural springs to fine dining in our several downtowns, from hot air ballooning to extraordinary shopping, we have everything LGBT newlyweds need to create new memories as they finally get recognized as equal.” According to Converge Orlando, an estimated 50,000 same-sex couples will get married in the next year. They also estimate that $150 million will be spent on same-sex honeymoons during that time. Audebert says that Orlando serves as
Tampa, FL – According to the Human Rights Campaign, Tampa ranks at the top of Florida cities due to its support the LGBT community. The city scored 89 out of 100 points on the HRC’s Municipal Equality Index, which examined 291 cities across the United States. While 25 cities (including St. Louis and Atlanta) received perfect scores, Tampa jumped up 23 points from last year’s survey. “Cities used to think they could generate jobs and economic growth by luring companies with huge tax abatements and other subsidies,” Richard Florida, professor of business and creativity at the University of Toronto, wrote in the report for HRC. “But today, more and more we know that enduring growth for cities and for nations comes from a open, diverse, tolerant social environment that is appealing to a diverse range of creative and talented people.” Tampa received points for including non-discrimination policies in housing, employment and public accomodations. The city also scored high on the relationship between the city, the gay community and the police force. Like most cities, it lost points for lack of protection for transgender residents. “Tampa has a long-standing tradition of inclusiveness,” said Mayor Bob Buckhorn in a recent statement. “Diversity is a pre-requisite for creativity and innovation, and by extension our economic competitiveness. It is as simple as they say, ‘equality means business.’”

Texas National Guard Amends Same-Sex Couple Policy

INTERNATIONAL
Austin, TX – The Texas National Guard and other military forces will begin to issue benefits to spouses in same-sex relationships if their spouse is a guard member. While the state currently has a ban on same-sex marriage, the organization announced that federal personnel will now be handling the paperwork, according to the Associated Press. “We’re going to go back to business as usual,” said Texas Guard spokeswoman Lt. Col. Joanne MacGregor. “It will be a full service.” The Pentagon approved the new procedure for enrolling National Guard members and spouses in benefits programs. All five National Guard facilities that were previously closed to same-sex couples are now going to be available. “All military spouses, regardless of orientation, or gender, deserve to be treated with the same diginity, respect, and support for their sacrifices in support of our nation, no matter what state they serve in,” said Stephen Peters, president of the American Military Partner Association. “We urge the remaining states who have not yet complied with the Department of Defense policy to do so quickly and affirm their commitment to all military families.”
ORTHODOX CALENDAR OFFERS A BOLD TRIBUTE TO GAY RUSSIANS
S
ainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, France – The Orthodox Calender company has put out a second 2014 wall calendar in support of LGBT people in Russia. A collaboration between Orthodox Calendar’s art director and Hungarian artist Tienne, “Bigger, Harder, Better!” was a concept born after the two traveled to Russia to visit. The calendar features artwork in the style of out comic book illustrator Joe Phillips, recreating iconic imagery and placing them into gay scenes in an effort to battle the negative influences of the church on the LGBT people of Russia. “2013 has been a disaster for LGBT people in many Orthodox countries but the most extreme of all was in Russia, where a recently passed law bans so-called gay propaganda in places where children could witness it,” Orthodox Calendar representatives said in a press release. “Behind all the cowardly politicians who treat LGBT people as scapegoats for their countries’ economic and political malaise, there is a single, powerful force that is beating the drum of hatred: the Orthodox Church. Whether Russian, Romanian, Georgian, Ukranian,
Cardinal Dolan Blames Antigay Views of Church on Bad Marketing New York, NY – According to Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Catholic Church’s views on LGBT equality are sometimes distorted by the media reports the Associated Press. “Well, I think maybe we’ve been outmarketed sometimes,” said Dolan in an interview on Meet the Press. “We’ve been caricatured as being antigay.” Dolan said that the church supports “traditional marriage” and is not “anti-anybody.” “When you have forces like Hollywood, when you have forces like politicians, when you have forces like some

opinion-molders that are behind it, it’s a tough battle.” Dolan was one of the prominent figures that battled the passage of marriage equality in New York in 2011. At the time, he posted a letter to his website that likened same-sex marriages to Communist regimes.
Gay Lawmaker Wants to Repeal Virginia Marriage Ban Richmond, VA – A gay state senator in Virginia wants to repeal the state’s constitutional amendment that forbids marriage equality. Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-Va.) introduced a bill that could possibly break the sate’s constitutional
ban, or at least get the ball rolling. Ebbin’s bill would begin the process of repealing the amendment, approving the bills in 2014, and again in the 2016 legislative session. If the bill is approved, the proposal would appear on the November 2016 ballot. “Change is coming across the country and eventually we’ll have marriage equality in Virginia,” Ebbin told the Washington Blade last week. “The road to marriage equality in Virginia might not be a short one, but we’ve got to make sure we’re on our way.” In 2006, Virginians voted to amend the state constitution to recognize marriages only involving one man and one woman. The amendment, known as the Marshall-Newman Amendment, passed by a margin of 57 percent to 43 percent that same year.

Known for his uber-popular stint on Full House back in the early 1990s, Dave Coulier has since made numerous appearances on shows like The Surreal Life and Skating with Celebrities. He also had a tumultuous relationship with then unknown singer Alanis Morissette (with rumors of “You Outta Know being about him). Unlike Bob Saget, though, Dave Coulier relies on cleaner jokes, having once even been a part of a comedy

Dean Trantalis Responds to Recent Scandal In an ongoing effort to provide the best in local and national LGBT related news, we here at the Florida Agenda believe in hearing both sides of the story. As the publisher for the Florida Agenda, I believe in giving people the opportunity to set the record straight, whether it be a community member, a local proprietor or a public figure. The below is a letter to the publisher that comes directly from the source of a recent political scuffle: Dean Trantalis. BY DEAN TRANTALIS
C
ity Hall was stunned two weeks ago when a local attorney entered its meeting Chambers and declared in a thunderous and accusing manner that I had somehow violated an ethical code by not disclosing that I was going to make money off a deal should his client’s hotel project on the beach not be approved that night. And as a result, he demanded that I should recuse myself from voting on the project. This was no ordinary lawyer. His name is William Scherer, a Republican stalwart who’s never shown any love towards the gay community, and, might I add, best buds with my former political opponent, Charlotte Rodstrom. Our Commission meeting stopped dead in its tracks, a recess was called, and everyone was trying to figure out what the heck he was talking about. Here’s a little background: Sometime during the beginning of my campaign last fall to fill Charlotte’s seat after she quit to run for County Commission, the developer for a hotel called the Vintro came to the beach neighborhood board meeting (the CBA) to discuss their plans to build a hotel on a quarter acre lot they just purchased right behind the Casablanca Restaurant. Everything about it sent up red flags-the size of the lot, the location on such a busy corner, you name it, and I told them at the time that as-is, in my opinion, it may be difficult for them to get neighborhood approval. It was an interesting design and the developers were new to the area, so I offered them some suggestions on how to help them out. They looked at me with an unflinching gaze and said, “It’s either this or nothing.” Whatever, I still needed to win my race, and I thought nothing more of it. Once elected in March of this year, some weeks had passed and I get a call from my former partner, Richard Smith, a realtor, letting me know that a mutual client was interested in that same parcel to convert the historic home that was on the property to a restaurant. I told him that I had no information on the intentions of the developer, and if the client was interested, he would have to call the developers attorney directly because I could not be involved. I gave him the name of the attorney, a Scott Backman, and that was the last I heard from Richard for a while.
Dean Trantalis Apparently, from papers that have been shown to me, Richard did make contact with the attorney and Richard prepared a letter-of-intent (LOI) on behalf of his client in order to submit it to the developer to see if there was any interest in selling the property. My his own admission, Richard mistakenly used a form that I had once prepared for him on a different project which still had my name on it as the closing agent. I don’t know exactly when I discovered his error, but as soon as I saw it, I immediately told him to remove my name because I could have no involvement with the transaction. He said he would and we left it at that. The developer is now accusing me of talking against his project so that I could do a real estate closing if Richard’s buyer decided to buy the property. The claim is that I was planning this even before the election, back when I first met this developer, which is before this client ever expressed an interest in the property. In any case, buyer or no buyer, the design and the site plan of the hotel had problems. Apparently the developer had been talking with Richard all summer long about putting a deal together to sell the property, and in an actual contract offer that was submitted to the developer, my

LETTER TO THE PUBLISHER
name was nowhere to be found on any of the documents. Not in my wildest dreams would I have ever thought this would be an issue. Mr. Backman met with me several times during the year and each time, it was congenial, I spoke about how we might still save the deal if his clients would just acquire some additional land around the site, but he said his clients refused. Never did he disclose to me that he was working with Richard nor that he thought that I might have been working behind his back to squeeze his clients out. In fact, a couple of times when Richard would ask if there was any progress on the hotel moving forward for approval, I kept telling him to move on and find another location for his client because I believed the developer was set on getting it built on the original site. A disclosure of this nature is not normally contemplated when we as commissioners are asked to disclose our communications with the principal parties. Being so far removed in time and in person from those who were directly involved in the project, there really was nothing to disclose. Nevertheless, at the Commission meeting, I agreed that, in order to avoid even the appearance of an impropriety, I would recuse myself. I not only did not
vote, I did not even participate in the discussion. Despite all the blustery accusations made by Scherer and having now succeeded in denying me my right to vote, the hotel was still defeated--unanimously. The developer had not one vote in his favor. So what attorney worth his salt would ever ask for a vote from a governing body unless he had all his votes counted and was assured success. What was really going on here? Why was knocking out my vote so important? One reason is possibly because the developer knew he was going to lose, so he was looking for some way to justify a basis for an appeal. Whatever the Commission wouldn’t give him, maybe a court would. It’s a common tactic and Scherer is no stranger to it because he sued me once before as a Commissioner and personally when another project of his client’s was turned down back in 2005. Scherer lost. He just doesn’t like me. The strategy becomes more apparent when you realize that he has been plotting this scenario for months. For example, over the past year, he sent two young associates ( his own children, no less) to my agenda review meetings. When I asked their names, they sheepishly revealed who they were but also confessed that they did not live in the district but were there to “learn about city government.” Really? You sent them to me so that I could mentor them? Spies in our midst. Go figure. What now concerns me about what has since occurred is that the news media have taken some of these facts, made up some of their own, and have tried and convicted me across three counties all knowing that I recused myself and there was no other goal but that intended by Mr. Scherer. Of course, it still didn’t stop him from filing an ethics complaint against me, but that’s all part of his show to his client for the fact that his efforts at success went down in flames. What Scherer doesn’t realize is that I am no shrinking violet. I chose to serve elected office to empower our community and achieve goals that were being ignored. People all over town have come to my side, whether we have agreed on issues or not. This experience has only strengthened my resolve. Now it’s time to get back to work.

TRAINING AND DIET SURVIVAL TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS BY TOM BONANTI
/floridaagenda
F
alalalala! The holidays are upon us! Before you make your list and check it twice, do me one favor. Make a resolution not to let your fitness goals suffer by becoming lax with your training and nutrition. Promise? Of course you can’t turn down every holiday invitation just to keep your body building regime. But you do need to be aware of your potential to slide, and plan for those situations. Have some fun, but don’t overdue it. Remember, it’s not uncommon for most guys to pack on a whopping 5 to 10 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day! Use moderation when drinking, and by all means avoid the costly and even deadly mistake of drinking and driving. Make healthy choices at the buffet table. Don’t let holiday stress or lack of time keep you from training. Here are my best and most practical holiday survival tips.

Exercise first – Worried that you won’t have time to squeeze in your workout? Consider shifting your training. If evenings and weekends are too booked, try weights and cardio first thing in the morning. You may have to get up earlier, but you have the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve jumpstarted your metabolism and burned off some serious calories. Consolidate your workouts – Train two body parts with a continuous superset technique. For instance, you can train your tri’s and bi’s with alternating sets. Pair dumbbell curls with dumbbell triceps extensions for three to four sets. Kick some ass – You may not have a full hour to train because of errands and obligations, but you can have a kick-ass workout in 20-30 minutes. The key here is to use less weight and perform more reps and sets in rapid succession. Move from station to station quickly and avoid distractions.
Recuperate – Take the holiday season off. Many pro body builders follow a five months-on, one month-off routine. One of the best ways to build muscles is to give them a chance to rest, recover and grow, but remember, stay active and eat wisely. Train on the road – One of the biggest problems during the holidays and even at other times of the year, when you are traveling, is a lack of access to a gym. Join a gym for a day or a weekend. Training for a day or two in another gym can be inspiring! Simplify Workouts – If you’re on the road and you can’t get to the gym, you can still do crunches, lunges and leg lifts for the abs and butt. Try using your own body weight to do push ups and chair dips for chest and tri’s. Use the stairs when traveling or sightseeing. Keep that hot body all year round and combat holiday stress while you are at it. For more tips contact TrainerTomB@aol.com. Checkout my gym at www.pumpnincgym.com. Holiday gift certificates available! Contact Tom in Ft.Lauderdale at (954) 557-1119.

RECIPE

GRATIN OF SWEET POTATOES WITH RICOTTA AND HERBS
/floridaagenda
BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY
T
his little recipe is easy and delicious. If you use a little “cocotte” to bake and serve it, it looks so fantastic when you bring it to the table. Your guests will “ohh & ahh” before they even taste this delicious little gratin. Presentation counts, guys!
December 4, 2013 H 34
• 4 sweet potatoes • ½ lb of ricotta cheese • 2 eggs • ½ pint of milk • 1 bunch of parsley • 1 bunch of chives • S alt & pepper • P reheat the oven to 300 ° F
Preheat the oven to 300 ° F Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into very thin slices. Use a mandolin if you have one. Wash and dry the chives and destalk the parsley. Set a few strands of chives aside for the garnish. Finely chop the lot. Mix that with the ricotta, salt and pepper. Pour this preparation of the ricotta cheese in the bottom of a previously oiled gratin dish, or use individual little ramekins or
“cocottes,” the serving looks so much nicer this way; then cover with the thin slices of sweet potato. Whisk the whole eggs with the milk, salt and pepper and pour this mixture over the spuds. Bake for about an hour and a half. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with the reserved minced chives. Serve immediately with the meat of your choice... or serve as a starter, as I always say you are the chef!
Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

THE DRIVE
An Intimate Staple for Wilton Manors
/floridaagenda
/floridaagenda
DINING
BY GRANT JAMES
December 4, 2013 H 36
W
henever a new bar/restaurant opens up on Wilton Drive, it’s immediately a hot topic. We’ve seen it recently with Village Pub, Rumors and 13|Even. Each space had some hype before they even opened their doors. The Drive is the newest bar to open up in the “gayborhood,” and it’s no exception to the rule. For months people pondered what it would look like as a finished product. Conveniently located near favorites such as The Manor and Rumors, The Drive has some serious competition. The layout is similar to that of Alibi or Rosie’s. The inside has an open layout with mirrored walls, channeling some serious Studio 54 vibes. Though the inside is plenty inviting, it was lunch time, so my companion and I decided to sit outside. I’m happy we did, because the outside patio is deceptively spacious. Plenty of ceiling fans kept us cool as we looked over the menu, which included an array of tapas, wraps, paninis and salads. I ordered the kobe beef sliders ($8) as well as the turkey and apple panini ($10). My companion – who is a strict vegetarian – had no problems finding options on the menu. He ordered the bruschetta ($4) to start, with a cheese panini ($9) as his main course.
The kobe beef sliders were fresh and tasty paired perfectly with sauteed onions, mushrooms and a dijon mustard spread. My friend’s bruschetta was pretty much just your standard bruschetta, but you can’t beat the competitive price of $4. The turkey & apple panini was everything I wanted: melted brie cheese, sliced granny smith apples, and homemade apple butter on a whole wheat baguette. The apple butter was just the icing on the cake (or panini). According to my companion, the cheese panini was savory, gooey, and perfectly crisp. For his cheese selection, he ordered a combination of cheddar and gouda (they also offer havarti dill, fontina, provolone, Swiss and of course, American). Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs, because by the time our panini had arrived, we were pretty much full. The food came out fast, which was a major plus. The sous chef even came out to check on our table and informed us that the menu would be seeing some changes in the very near future. The Drive is a great addition to Wilton Drive. It provides a variety of quality food at extremely competitive prices, and a disco/lounge vibe if you’re simply looking to hang out and drink. We know it will become a staple in no time. When you go, make sure you mention Florida Agenda.
