Cocoa, FL – An 18-year-old Florida high school student is making headlines across the country after he took to Reddit to express complaints that he was prevented from graduating high school after school officials learned of his role in a gay porno. The student, identified only by his performance name, Noel, was sus-pended for 10 days by Cocoa High School administrators due to causing a “campus disturbance.” After being sus-pended for 10 days, Noel received an “automatic failure” due to the absences, effectively preventing him from graduating this summer. Another user on Reddit said that students at the school are supportive of Noel, and even planned a protest. “Several students planend to protest by
wearing support shirts, making posters, and skipping a class,” the post read. “The principle [sic] is threatening to automatically expel any student who joins in.” The Gaily Grind reported that Noel confirmed his suspension via his Facebook, saying, “Coming back to Cocoa isn’t the best for me but bringing justice to the disciplinary system and discrimination of the administration has not slipped my mind either.” The publication went on to confirm that a number of students skipped their last class on Friday in support of Noel. Noel is of age, so supporters are arguing that the decision to make the film was perfectly legal. “The principal has no right to do this,” one person wrote on the school’s Facebook. “Get the ACLU involved. Shame on the principal. Unless the guy films porn in your school, get out of his sex life and his career.”
INTERNATIONAL PUTIN DEFENDS ANTI-GAY LAW

t. Petersburg, Russia – In an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Russian President Vladimir Putin defended his recent “gay propaganda” ban, going so far as to say that it doesn’t really hurt anyone. “It seems to me that the law we have adopted does not hurt anyone,” he said during the interview. “Moreover, individuals of non-traditional orientation cannot feel like second-rate humans in this country because they are not
discriminated against in any way.” Shortly after Putin’s statement, a gay Russian protester was detained on Saturday for waving a rainbow flag around during the Olympic torch relay as it passed through Voronezh, according to The Associated Press. Photos emerged online of the man, Pavel Lebedev, pulling out the flag before being detained by security who wrestled him to the snow. In Putin’s interview on ABC, his first appearance on a U.S. TV network since 2012,
he stood up against critics who have said that the law would make things dangerous for those who wear pride symbols like the rainbow flag. “It has nothing to do with my persecuting people for their non-traditional orientation,” said Putin. “My personal position is that society must keep children safe. I couldn’t care less about sexual orientation. We will welcome all athletes and all visitors to the Olympics. None of our guests will have any probems.”

n an interview promoting his latest film, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” actor Chris Pine weighed in on Russia’s antigay legislation. “What’s happening there in terms of gay rights or the lack of it is extraordinary and awful,” he stated. Pine, best known for his role as Captain Kirk in “Star Trek,” even criticized U.S. government efforts in protesting these laws. “I think we should do more than just send gay Olympians [to the Sochi Games],” he added.

residents. The ordinance was passed in December with a vote of 6-1, due in part to the pro-gay coalition titled Be Fair Shreveport. The ordinance bans discrimination in both employment and housing (in Shreveport) due to sexual orientation or gender identity. The one “no” came from councilman Ron Webb, who said back in December that the bible “tells you homosexuals are an abomination,” adding that he doesn’t socialize with any of the LGBT community, according to KSLA. Just after the council approved Be Fair Shreveport, Webb created a proposal to repeal the policy. At last week’s City Council meeting, a number of residents came out to speak out against the repeal, including one transgender woman named Pamela Raintree. Raintree told Webb that if he was going to take the bible so seriously, he should stone her then and there, lifting a fistsized rock into the air. “Leviticus 20:13 states, ‘If a man also lie with mankind as he lieth with a woman, they shall surely put him to death,” she said. “I brought the first stone, Mr. Webb, in case that your Bible talk isn’t just a smoke screen for personal prejudices.” Immediately after, Webb withdrew his repeal.

Salt Lake City, UT – State officials are asking a federal appeals court for additional time to prepare arguments in defense of the current same-sex-marriage ban in Utah, reports the Associated Press. The Utah attorney general’s office has asked the court to wait until January 27 to prepare a “fulsome, detailed and quality” case, according to court documents filed on Friday. On January 6, the U.S. Supreme Court halted weddings, though hundreds of couples had already married. On Thursday, the state announced they would pay $300,000 to have three out-of-state attorneys take over the appeal. The state says in a court document that it brought in private lawyers due to the severity of the issue and the possibility of going to the U.S. Supreme Court. Utah has argued to the appeals court that the decision to put a halt on the marriages shows an interest from the higher court. The state also wants to make sure that the case is “handled in an orderly way benefitting the important issues being address.”
by adding a black, lesbian judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. The president nominated Staci Michelle Yandle last Thursday as one of four new nominees. “I am pleased to nominate these distinguished individuals to serve on the United States District Court Bench,” Obama said in statement. “I am confident they will serve the American people with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice.” Yandle was recommended to the President by Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), who called Yandle an “excellent candidate” to serve on the federal judiciary in a recent statement. “She will bring a wealth of knowledge and litigation experience to the position,” Durbin said. “I am pleased that President Obama has nominated her today. I will be working with Senator Kirk to see her nomination approved by the Senate.” If approved, Yandle will be the ninth openly gay judge to the federal branch, with Obama having named seven of them previously. Yandle would also be the first openly gay person to serve on the federal judiciary for Illinois.

after Mayor Ed Murray’s team found over 20 threatening, anti-gay posts done through the man’s Facebook account. One post read “Mayor, meet Harvey Milk,” referencing the gay rights activist’s fatal shooting in 1978, reports The Seattle Times. Taylor was held for suspicion of two counts of cyberstalking as well as two counts of malicious harassment. Defense lawyer Eric Lindell told judge Arthut Chapman that his client has Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism. He stated that his client had been off of his medication, asking for the bail to be set at $10,000. Prosecutor Gary Ernsdorff pursued a $1 million bail. The mayor told police that he found Taylor’s comments to be very offensive, considering some of the statements as death threats, according to an affidavit filed in court.

but every day, Florida laws are denying them the protections and dignity that every family deserves. These harmful laws are outdated and out of step. It is time for all families in our state to have full equality under the law.” Catherina Pareto and Karla Arguello have been together for 14 years now. Catherina owns/operates a financial planning firm, while Karla is a stay-at-home mother to their 15-month old son. “Florida is our home,” said Pareto in a statement. “It is where we are raising our child, and where we want to get married. Karla and I wish for our family the same things that other families want. We want to build our lives together, provide a safe and caring home for our child, and share in the responsibilities and protections of marriage.” Dr. Juan Carlos Rodriguez and David Price have been together for almost 18 years now. Juan Carlos works as a physician specializing in pulmonary medicine, while David is the practice manager for Juan Carlos’s medical practice. The couple have twins, a girl and a boy, who are three-years-old. “David and I are devoted to our children,” said Rodriguez. “We are a family in every way, except that Florida will not allow us to marry. Being a doctor, I see people and families in crisis all the time. In those situations, family and the legal protections that come with it are critical. It pains David and me to be denied a basic safety net of legal protections.” Todd and Jeff Delmay, together for 11 years, operate Delmay and Partners, a company that offers housing services for big events. Jorge is a paralegal at a Miami law firm and Don is an office manager at another Miami law firm. “Both Don and I have very strong ties to Florida and cannot imagine getting married anywhere else,” said Jorge. “If we could marry, we would be legally recognized as a family and have all the same legal protections as others.” NCLR Legal Director Shannon Minter weighed in on the topic as well, focusing on the family elements of the case, namely the children. “The law should support families, not make it harder for committed couples to support one another and protect their children,” said Minter. “Barring same-sex couples from marriage causes great harms to their families and children while helping no one.” The historical lawsuit is scheduled to be filed on February 21.

iami, FL – On Tuesday morning, six same-sex couples and Equality Florida announced that they are filing a lawsuit in the Florida state court in Miami to seek “the freedom to marry.” Like many winning lawsuits before, the official statement from Equality Florida argues that Florida’s laws that prevent same-sex couples from marrying violates the United States Constitution by denying the legal protections and equality that marriage provides. The couples all hail from Miami and the surrounding areas – some with children, others with fully grown children or grandchildren. The couples include: Catherina Pareto and Karla Arguello; Dr. Juan Carlos Rodriguez and David Price; Vanessa and Melanie Alenier; Todd and Jeff Delmay; Summer Greene and Pamela Faerber; Don Price Johnston and Jorge Isaias Diaz. The couples are represented by the firm of Carlton Fields Jorden Burt, attorney Elizabeth F. Schwartz, attorney Mary B. Meeks and the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR). Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida, has been fighting for equal rights for the LGBT community from Key West all the way up to Tallahassee. “Today the majority of Floridians stand with us as we take this historic step toward marriage equality in the Sunshine State,” Smith said in a statement. “These couples have been embraced by their families and communities,

Love and Hope
The Boogie Man
The Rosenbaum Contemporary Museum of Art features a tribute to the American painter and sometime postage stamp creator Robert Indiana. Indiana’s best-known work is the love sculpture in which love is arranged in a square with a tilted letter O. The work became so popular in the 1970s that it was even crafted into a postage stamp. Two years ago, Google used the Love image in place of their normal search engine site logo for Valentine’s Day. His recent collection, “Hope,” is inspired by this seminal work. 10 a.m. Rosenbaum Contemporary. 150 Yamato Road, Boca Raton, 33431.
There are so many different ways to like it: fried, creamy, sautéed, julienned, boiled, sunny-side up, al dente, and poached. KC and the Sunshine Band, understands themselves, more than most of us. We all struggle with what we need or what we really like. They, in contrast, know confidently exactly what they like,
and they’re not afraid to tell whoever they’re with, as is evidenced by their wildly popular now wedding staple “That’s the Way (I Like it).” Tonight they don’t just stop with the ways they like it, they also explore the Jekyll and Hyde like nature of KC (“I’m Your Boogie Man”), the pain of rejection (“Please Don’t Go”), and the most important command ever uttered at a party (“Get Down Tonight”). 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

You can optimize your workouts and actually chart your progress by keeping a fitness log. A training log is essential for any serious fitness enthusiast. Keep a written record of your workouts as you add sets and build reps, lift more iron and add strength-building routines. Add photos occasionally to your written notes. Flipping back through the pages will boost your self-esteem as you see how far you’ve come! Remember as you keep your training log that hard workouts should be followed by easier ones, hard weeks should be followed by easier weeks. You need to change your routines and workouts substantially every
3-4 months, as your body changes, as your goals are adjusted – these are called mesocycles. Make sure to chart your cardio and keep track of your weight, body fat percentage and any important events or injuries you may be struggling with during your training. Does training sometimes turn you cranky? Moods are closely associated with how you perform at work, in the bedroom, and in the gym. Overtraining, technically referred to as cumulative microtrauma is often accompanied by feelings of depression, apathy, lethargy and frustration. When you feel this way, it is often your body telling you to back off. Take some time away from the gym, but stay active. Go for walks, swim at the beach, but give your body a rest from heavy training. Reassess your progress, read through your training log, consult a personal trainer or find a workout
HEALTH
buddy to motivate you. When you return to the gym you’ll have a new attitude, a fresh set of goals and the vim and vigor you need to build and sculpt that body. A written record of your food intake can be very telling. A food record is a must if you want to build some serious mass, or take off fat. Track your fat intake to make sure you follow the target of less than one gram of fat per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of bodyweight. Write down everything you put into your mouth and when you eat it; don’t rely on memory. Try to eat all of your low glycemic index carbs earlier in the day to fuel your workouts and hectic schedule. Read labels and remember
that there are: • 9 calories in every gram of fat, • 4 calories in very gram of carbohydrates and proteins • 7 big fat wasted calories in every gram of alcohol. Many people tend to bounce around from highs to lows, and don’t cope well with lows. Writing your feelings down is the next best thing to talking about them. Your workouts are an incredible investment in your health, appearance, and self-esteem. Your training log can be a new key to success in your fitness endeavors. RECIPE MASHED POTATOES
/floridaagenda
BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY
floridaagenda.com
SUBMITTED PHOTO
I
n my opinion the best mashed potatoes are made with “floury” types of potato (like russet), although “waxy” potatoes are sometimes used for a different texture. Butter, olive oil, milk or cream is usually added to improve flavor and texture, and the potatoes are seasoned with salt and pepper, and any other desired herbs and spices. Popular ingredients and seasonings include: garlic, cheese, bacon bits, sour cream, crisp onion or spring onion, mustard, spices such as nutmeg, chopped herbs such as parsley or rosemary, or fresh thyme. A French variation adds egg yolk for pommes duchesse; piped through a pastry tube into wavy ribbons and rosettes, brushed with butter and lightly browned. In low-calorie or non-dairy variations, milk, cream, and butter may be replaced by soup stock or broth, as in this recipe where I just use the water used to boil the spuds and then a little butter.
• 6 medium russet potatoes, peeled and cubed • 1/4 cup butter (you use in fact as much or as little as you like)
• Fresh ground pepper
Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

• Salt
Place potatoes in a saucepan and cover with water. Cover and bring to a boil; cook for 20-25 minutes or until very tender. Drain, but don’t discard the water. Add butter, and salt and pepper. Mash adding some of the water until light and fluffy, or to the consistency you want. You are the chef.

MARDI GRAS OR CARNIVAL:
No Matter the Name, the Party’s the Same BY RICK KARLIN
I
n the trio of the gayest holidays, Mardi Gras comes in a close third behind Pride and Halloween. If it wasn’t for the fact that straight people celebrate it (it seems to be the source of most “Girls Gone Wild” videos), it might come in even higher. Sometimes with all the craziness, it’s easy to forget the origins of Mardi Gras (and its sister celebration Carnival): a big celebration with the purpose of getting all the craziness out of people’s systems so they’ll be ready for the solemnity of Lent. In the U.S., New Orleans may be more identified with Mardi Gras, but Mobile, Alabama claims to have had the first parade in America. Mobile now has a Mardi Gras similar to New Orleans’, complete with beads and balls. For weeks, the streets of downtown Mobile are filled with the sights and sounds of live marching bands, brilliant-colored floats and of course, crowds of parade-goers. Mobile even has a Carnival Museum. For more information check out, cityofmobile. org/mardigras. Galveston, Texas also welcomes more than 500,000 people for elaborate Mardi Gras parades, entertainment, feasting and other festivities. Check out galveston.com or call (888) 939-8680. First or not, N’awlins is still the capital of Mardi Gras festivities in North America. The celebrations draw millions of visitors, and LGBT visitors are no exception. New Orleans Gay Mardi Gras is without a doubt the most outrageous gay and lesbian event in New Orleans, second only to “Southern Decadence” in the number of gay and lesbian revelers. In 2014, the celebrations take place Thursday, February 27 through Tuesday, March 4 in the lower French Quarter. This is where the epicenter of the LGBT New Orleans community is located (at the corner of Bourbon and St. Ann Streets,) anchored by the city’s largest gay nightclub, The Bourbon Pub. New
Orleans’ Gay Mardi Gras presents the nation’s best DJ talent. For more information and links to travel packages, check out gaymardigras.net. Back on this side of the world, Rio de Janeiro is the mother of all Carnival celebrations. The parades in Rio are known as bandas, with more than 10,000 participants per parade. There are several gay festivals that seem to include a little something for everyone. The entire city embraces the gay events. So much so, that people in Brazil joke that everyone seems a little gay during carnival. In addition to gay pool parties and large dance events, you can also join street festivals and parades all over the city. Most agencies catering to LGBT travelers have packages for Rio’s Carnival. Zoom Vacations (zoomvacations.com) has packages starting at $6,500. Atlantis Cruises, priced from $2,800 to $6,000, sail from Buenos Aires with the ultimate port being Rio, just in time for the parties. For more information, go to atlantisevents.com. Lesser known, but no less enjoyable, Mexico’s Carnival celebrations are some of the most exuberant you’ll find. Mazatlan, the beach resort town
on Mexico’s northern Pacific coast, hosts one of the world’s largest Mardi Gras celebrations, attracting hundreds of thousands of revelers. The festivities actually start on Thursday with the Muestra Gastronómica, an allday food festival on Plaza Machado. The parade is held on the Malecon, between the Fisherman’s Monument and Valentino’s, with a fireworks celebration staged all along Avenida del Mar. Admission to the areas where the bands are playing is restricted, but tickets that allow you to roam the entire space and see all the bands and other performers are just 30 pesos and do not need to be purchased in advance. For more information, go to mazatlantoday.net. Perhaps the most elaborate Carnival celebration is held in Venice, Italy. Many events are held in and along the canals, including shows, concerts, dances, and water processions with masked rowers and decorated boats. The official ending to the celebration is the ball held in St. Mark’s Square. The celebration begins with a pre-Carnival party, “Prologue,” on Valentine’s Day and opens with a show, “Cannaregio”, on the next day. What follows are days
filled with boat pageants, float parades and a new event this year. A ball will be held in a 600 year old palace on the Grand Canal. Those attending arrive at the water entrance on the sea level floor, greeted by dancers who will guide them to a cocktail reception and performances by internationally acclaimed illusionists, acrobats and entertainers, before being seated on the upper level for a grand dinner and dancing. Germany gives its own spin to the holiday with Fasching. The largest parade, called Rosenmontag, is in Cologne, where locals, immigrants and tourists celebrate with numerous fancy-dress gatherings and masked balls. Each day is devoted to one group. For example Women’s Carnival Day finds the streets teeming with women in fancy dress on their way to work or to shops. In the evenings masked balls and parties predominate. The climax of the German Carnival is a large parade. Being Germany, everything starts right on time, and ends abruptly. Following the celebration, on Ash Wednesday, fish dinners are traditionally served as a cure for hangovers. For more information on Carnival in Cologne, go to koelnerkarneval.de.
How many Kinseys have been in the group since 1993? We have very low turnover in The Kinsey Sicks, except in bed. We have to turn over Trampolina every couple of hours because of her snoring. As for staffing, Ben Schatz and I are originals. Jeff Manabat, who plays Trixie, has been with The Kinsey Sicks for nine years. Spencer Brown, who plays Trampolina, (has been with us) for four.
The Kinsey Sicks has a grueling tour schedule. How many days of the year is the group on the road? We’re on the road maybe 100 or 120 days year. It is indeed quite grueling, although we have it down to a science. Makeup, costumes, wigs, sound equipment, merchandise, all folded just so and packed right in our Mary Poppins carpet bags.
Have the members always been gay – and is that a requirement? What? The members of the group are GAY??? [laughs].
Electile Dysfunction is a clever title. How did you come up with it? We have a process we call
“brainstorming” in which someone comes up with an idea and everyone else instantly and heartlessly shoots it down. Finally, we run out of time and pick the first thing that comes to mind. As on other Kinsey Sicks discs, “Electile Dysfunction” makes good use of parody lyrics in several songs. Ben Schatz is our primary parody maven. His parodies are so successful because he’s so demanding of himself in the process. He won’t settle for anything that doesn’t parallel the original as closely as possible. It must have the same rhyme scheme, including internal rhymes. In fact, the parodies that we think are the best are the ones that are so close to the original – but with a huge change in meaning – that people are stunned they never thought of it themselves.
The Kinsey Sicks have been singing in a style that predates TV shows such as “Glee,” “The Sing Off” and others. What you think about the sudden fascination with a cappella singing? Yeah, a cappella is a big deal now thanks to reality TV. So is drag, thanks to reality TV. So, why the f***aren’t we famous?
floridaagenda.com
Why do you think Republicans are so obsessed with LGBT people? Are they? I hadn’t noticed. Although when we were in Tampa during the Republican National Convention, Grindr was looking awfully busy.
Q&A
/floridaagenda
Winnie/Irwin Keller: Ah, the name. Now that might have been a terrible mistake. It’s a riff off the famous Kinsey Scale, of course, with a nod to our sick sense of humor. So it’s a slight chuckle for those who get it, and an enormous “huh?” for those who don’t.

That’s the title of a Kinsey Sicks song and music video – “Why the F@#k Aren’t We Famous?” What would make you more famous? Leak important government secrets or have Kanye West’s baby.
