Montana Joins the Push for Marriage Equality HELENA, MT—Four same-sex couples have filed a Federal lawsuit to push for marriage equality in the state of Montana. The latest in a wave of similar lawsuits in other states and well as a number of victories on the same issue, Rolando v Foxcontends Montana law prohibiting same-sex couples from marrying in the state amounts to discrimination — both on the basis of sex and sexual orientation. That discrimination, the plaintiffs suggest, violates due process and equal protection rights under Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. As has been witnessed in other states, it is lesbian couples that have stepped forward to push the equality lawsuit. Angie and Tanya Rolando, who are not legally married, but want the opportunity to become wed in Montana where they live in Great Falls, filed the suit. Joining the lawsuit areShauna and Nicole Goubeaux, who live in Billings; Ben Milano and Chase Weinhandl, from Bozeman; and Sue Hawthorne and Adel Johnson, whose home is in Helena. According to the complaint, “The paramount significance of marriage to lesbian and gay couples in Montana is no different than it is to different-sex couples,” according to the filing. “Yet, Montana law specifically singles out same-sex couples for exclusion from this important right. This has the effect not only of denying same-sex couples the freedom and dignity afforded to other Montanans, but also the legal protections, duties and benefits that marriage affords under federal and Montana law.” The lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Montana as well as the private firms Goetz, Gallik & Baldwin P.C. and Morrison & Foerster LLP. ACLU staff attorney Elizabeth Gill stated, “An amazing change has taken place over the past few years as more Americans embrace the idea that samesex couples should have the freedom to marry. It’s time for Montana to join the

Now It’s South Dakota’s Turn SIOUX FALL, SD--One day after Montana couples filed for same-sex marriage equality, six gay couples have sued the state of South Dakota for the right to marry. The lawsuit challenges the lawfulness of a 1996 state law as well as the voter-approved 2006 constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. march toward equality for all loving and committed couples across the country.” Arriving late in the game, State Democratic Governor Steve Bullock voiced his opinion on the subject, sensing a political tidal wave of support for the issue. ““Montanans cherish our freedom and recognize the individual dignity of every one of us,” Bullock said. “The time has come for our state to recognize and celebrate – not discriminate against – two people who love one another, are committed to each other, and want to spend their lives together,” he said.

Marriage for same-sex couples fully recognized Judicial ruling against a same-sex marriage ban stayed pending appeal

in the state of Minnesota last April 26 by Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges, are the lead defendants in the case. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re first or last,” said Nancy Rosenbrahn. “It’s about sending a message to the country and the Supreme Court: Look at all these states; you can’t ignore this. We want to make noise,” she added. “By doing this, we have accomplished what we wanted to accomplish,” she said. “The reason we decided to take on South Dakota is to open up these conversations.” Other couples that are a part of the lawsuit are Krystal Cosby and Kaitlynn Hoerner and Barbara and Ashley Wright of Aberdeen, S.D.; Lynn and Monica Serling-Swank of Brandon, S.D.; Jeremy Coller and Clay Schweitzer of Rapid City, S.D.; and Greg Kniffen and Mark Church of Sioux Falls. Minneapolis attorney Josh Newville, who filed the suit on behave of the six couples, claims South Dakota is in violation of three rights guaranteed in the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution: deprivation of equal protection, due process and right to travel. According to the suit, “The State will incur little to no burden in allow-

ing same-sex couples to marry and in recognizing the lawful marriages of same-sex couples from other jurisdictions on the same terms as different-sex couples, while the hardship to Plaintiffs of being denied due process, equal protection, and privileges or immunities is severe, subjecting them to an irreparable denial of their constitutional rights,” it states. The complaint seeks a declaration that the statute and constitutional bans are unconstitutional and asks that the defendants be prevented from enforcing the bans and be required to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and recognize gay marriages from other states. It also seeks reimbursement for lawyers and other costs. In a news conference Thursday, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert blasted other states’ decisions against defending their gay-marriage bans. “For elected officials, governors or attorney generals, to pick and choose what laws (they) will enforce I think is a tragedy, and is the next step to anarchy,” Herbert said. “We have an obligation as a state to defend those laws.” State Attorney General Marty Jackley said it is his responsibility to defend the

America’s last remaining state with an unchallenged same-sex marriage ban is about to lose that distinction. At least if Joshua Newville has anything to say about it--and he probably will. Newville is the Minneapolis-based civil rights attorney who’s litigating the suit in South Dakota over the banning of same-sex marriage. “There will be a case filed challenging North Dakota’s same sex ban,” Newville said while suggesting that it would take another six to eight weeks to process. This has been a rather buoyant time for the same-sex marriage movement who’s had an unbroken streak of court victories since the linchpin Supreme Court decision in the summer of 2013 striking down the core of the

Defense of Marriage Act, while granting recognition to same-sex marrieds in the process. The current trail to presumed victory had its birth in Constitutional Amendment No. 1, placed on the North Dakota ballot in 2004. And for the past decade, the fact that 73% of Dakota’s voting population cast their ballots in favor of the ban has made removing extremely difficult. Yet, the bandwagon that is same-sex marriage is now

moving at an incredible speed. It is now possible for same-sex men and women to be married in 19 states representing 66% of the population. Currently, 29 state constitutions and four state laws restrict marriage to heterosexual couples, according the National Conference of State Legislatures. Now, there have been 32 challenges with all decisions up this point favoring the same-sex marriage advocates.

state constitution and statutes, including a ban on same-sex marriage that 52% of voters approved. “It is my duty as attorney general, and case law supports, that traditional family values and definitions are determined by state law,” Jackley said last Wednesday. “And if there is going to be a change, then that change should come from the voters of South Dakota at the ballot box.” South Dakota state Rep. Steve Hickey, a Sioux Falls Republican and a minister who recently gained publicity over a column posted to Facebook criticizing homosexuality and “gay sex,” said the challenge is something “we were waiting for. I think (Jackley) will defend our state constitution, but I think this will all eventually come down to five judges in the Supreme Court, which is unfortunate,” Hickey said. “This should come down to the people.”

association for providing “outdated, ungrounded, unsafe and incomplete information” by saying that people are born gay, the report said. LGBT groups have come under severe criticism since the since a landmark court ruling last year that paved the way for a transgender woman to marry her male partner. Recently groups took out an anti-gay march organized by Evangelical Christian groups under the slogan “one husband, one wife; one man, one woman; one life, one love.” Reacting to Lee’s comment, Brian Leung, convenor of rights group the Big Love Alliance, told scmp.com that the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association is “a reputable, long-standing NGO, who have been caring for the underprivileged and minorities for years” and that the counseling they provide “is one of a kind.” He accused Lee of “instigating hatred and discrimination” and “playing up fear of the unknown.” A spokeswoman for the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association said the counseling was funded independently of government cash and that its support for next month’s Pink Dot event to promote diversity did not involve any money. ong Kong--Critics opposed to equal rights for gays and lesbians are accusing Hong Kong’s oldest running counseling center for youngsters struggling with their sexuality of “brainwashing” children because of its plans to take part in a pro-gay-rights event next month. The Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association, that has worked with the city’s children since 1936, has been counseling them and their parents to better understand sexuality for the past seven years. But that service, and the association’s plan to take part in a pro-gayrights event next month, has come under harsh criticism by conservative groups, reports scmp.com. “We question why they would show blatant support to sexual minorities rights groups,” Leticia Lee See-yin, a Beijing loyalist and parent-activist from the conservative Justice Alliance group told scmp.com “They are [saying] being gay is fine. It’s not fair to brainwash impressionable children,” said Lee. She also accused the association of not being transparent in its use of government funds because it publishes booklets on same-sex marriage. “we” in our preceding conversation refers to my partner in life and in love—Michael Davis. For the uninitiated, Michael is French creole, Jewish, Republican and a conservative. How’s that for a handful??? He’s as whiny a bitch as any princess you’ll meet, but sharp as a tack on relevant issues and political impact. Michael intends to be a Senator one day, so get set for his presence in this column each week, one way or the other. At the moment, you’ll find him running the show at Scarfone’s Coal Fired Pizza, Pasta and Spirits in the Gables complex on Wilton Drive. He’ll be the guy moving at the speed of light dressed all in black and looking like a cross between a fashion model and a Dolphins linebacker. Of course, in a position like that, running a hot spot in town, he gets all the latest gossip, scandal and political opinions—updated hourly. What Michael doesn’t know, Wendy Williams does. Since he’s a Hot Topics groupie of her daily television series, he’s got us covered. So, as I sit down weekly to write this column, get set for some controversy with a heavy dose of common sense. I’ve lived long enough to give shade to anyone or anything, and you’ll hear my opinion on everything from police brutality to the relevance of dog parks. And don’t get me started on the current governor of this state, the new vapor pipes, or lack of cross walks everywhere in the city! Everything and everyone is fair game here, so if you’ve got a chief gripe and need a sounding board, there’s a place in the new Agenda for that. We’ll also become your place of choice for political direction and influence, fashion faux-pas as well as fashion faux, and the best places to eat in town. And lots of other “important” stuff….Until then, new friends….

hat you are about to read is important. Oh, we don’t mean “important” as in some earth-shattering revelation that would make you queen of the break room for 24 hours. No, not that kind of “important.” This particular column, and every word in it, is the first example you’ll read of the changes about to happen in the Agenda. Now that’s the kind of “important” we mean. You won’t realize that this is a special introduction until months from now when you’re the first to reach for the newly delivered Agenda on a news rack around town. Like the day you met your new best friend— the one that started so naturally and smooth that who knew the association would eventually provide your life with insight, reflection, and consistent good advice. Ours may be a weekly relationship, but you’ll soon realize that dropping by this page to read what is actually happening out in the world—or at least the world as we see it—will be a standing date. The anticipation is driving us crazy already. First a little background to keep you current. While I’ve written shelves full of books, my very favorite is always my last one—in this case, “The Baby Boomers’ Guide to the Fountain of Youth” (Amazon.com) which turned out to be quite full of useful fitness information and a bestseller as well. Before you ask, we workout every day, and eat as much food as we like as a result. Our eightpacks are in place right along with a nice set of shoulders and arms— the kind that get stares even though we’re often left wondering why. After working out for two decades, we forget that our bodies are not the same as other folk. Before I forget to mention, the

HARVEY MILK COMMEMORATIVE STAMP TAKES CENTER STAGE AT WHITE HOUSE

W

ASHINGTON, DC—The new stamp commemorating late gay activist and San Francisco city supervisor Harvey Milk will stand in history as the time for reflection and forward movement in the LGBT quest for equal rights. In a two-hour ceremony at the White House, Milk was remembered as a man who refused to quit, even while realizing the very real threats against his life. Multiple inspiring and emotional speeches were given at the ceremony, which took place on May 22, 2014, on what would have been Harvey Milk’s 84th birthday, The first openly gay politician to be elected to office in California, Milk was assassinated in San Francisco on November 27, 1978 by city supervisor Dan White, who was eventually acquitted of murder and convicted on voluntary manslaughter charges. “He did see this day because he dreamed it,” Milk’s nephew Stuart Milk said of his uncle. “It’s what gave him the strength to go into work with death threats, and to remain loud and remain with that call that we have to come out (and be heard).” Milk is president of the Harvey Milk Foundation, and said his uncle realized the importance that breaking through the gay political glass ceiling would have on gay rights 36 years later. “It was a wake-up call, and, I think, today we can say we heard it,” Stuart Milk said. “It was truly Uncle Harvey’s dream that we could see a different paradigm resulting from both his assassination and that equally meanspirited verdict. He hoped our justice system could be moved to not only uphold the rights of LGBT people, but to live free from violence and scorn, and maybe our justice system could even uphold the equality principles for our Constitution.” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power was the highest-ranking member of the Obama administration present at the ceremony. (The President himself did not attend, He was speaking at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Coopertown, NY.) “I get to work for a president who is identified with two words: hope and change,” Power said. “But it is hard to think of words that more succinctly describe Harvey Milk the leader, the activist, the fighter, the elected official. Hope and change is about a deeply held

The unveling of the Harvey Milk stamp at the White House

and proud American tradition: a tradition of toil to ensure the triumph of progress; a tradition of love winning out over fear. Hope and change,” Power said. Power made reference to the on-going effort for passage ofthe Employment Non-Discrimination Act being pushed by the Obama administration. “While we now do live in an age where the National Football League has, for the first time, drafted an openly gay man, we still live in an age where the National Football League can fire him for being gay,” Power said. “Postage stamps will not change that. Legislation will,” she said. The White House public engagement adviser and LGBT liaison Gautam Raghavan acted as unofficial emcee for the event. “I wish he could have grown old and seen the legacy of the hope that he breathed into so many of our lives,” Raghavan said. “And I think he would have liked being a stamp because he knew the best way to change hearts and minds was for people to get to know us.” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) remembered that she had just been elected to Congress at the time of Harvey Milk’s assassination. “I was thinking that day, ‘Is this how it ends? It this how it ends?’” Pelosi said. “But it really was the beginning, a sad sacrifice to pay, but it was the beginning of so much. And you all know what it is. I don’t need to elaborate.” Milk appreciated the “fundamental American value of equality” and “cared about the rights of everyone,” Pelosi said. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), who began his political career as a black civil rights leader in the 1960s, and voted against the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, drew comparison’s

been the civil rights movement and Milk’s fight for gay equality. “The activism for Harvey Milk came of age during the last social revolution in American history,” Lewis said. “It was a revolution of values and ideas that started in 1955 in the American South and gave rise to other movements in America. Good trouble, necessary trouble, that’s what Harvey Milk got involved in.” “It’s incredible to look at a time when running for San Francisco supervisor as an openly gay man seemed like a revolutionary act,” Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) said. The first out lesbian to be elected to the Senate, Baldwin added. “Harvey knew that. He welcomed the attention. He weathered the insults. He shoved off the death threats. And it wasn’t to satisfy his own ambition, but rather to answer the call he felt to move the cause of equality forward.” Baldwin too made reference to the NFL draft selection of openly gay athlete Michael Sam, and the kiss he shared with his boyfriend as live television cameras rolled. Specifically, she pointed to its appropriateness if viewed by children. “We live in country where most nine-yearolds could probably explain that kiss to their parents without batting an eye,” Baldwin said. “They understand what love is. They understand what fairness is. America is ready to take more steps forward, but it’s going to take more acts of courage and conviction, like the ones that made Harvey Milk a hero.” Other speakers at the event included Evan Low, a gay city council member from Campbell, Calif.; Torey Carter, chief operating officer for the Gay & Lesbian Victory Institute, and Ronald Stroman, deputy postmaster general.

had a leaking roof that has caused damage within the gym, including warping the hardwood workout floor in the aerobics room. There are ceiling tiles that are in the men’s locker room that need to be replaced but we cannot touch them,” Hunt said, saying that his hands are tied given the unresponsiveness of the landlord. Ditto the bike rack in front of the gym that is neither owned nor maintained by Steel Gym, but utilized by its membership. “When I bought this gym, I saw a diamond in the rough. I had great plans for Steel Gym Fort Lauderdale and still do. But every time I turn around, I get slapped in the face with some other issue, rumor, or inexcusable behavior on the part of the part of Rivercrest.”

May 28, 2014 13

Parking, always an issue at the Shoppes of Wilton Manors, recently became worse with the padlocking of the rear parking lot that runs behind the entire strip mall complex, effectively removing dozens of parking spots from the mix. When Ken Hunt failed to make his customary weekly appearance at Steel Gym Fort Lauderdale last February, members suggested that he had given up on Wilton Manors. A hulking bodybuilder who is tough to miss, Hunt was, in fact, hospitalized in New York with double pneumonia, having allowed a cold to slip into bronchitis and then pneumonia. “I’m here every week, traveling between New York, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale.” But while his other branches are successfully maintaining costs and increasing members, the Fort Lauderdale location is a hotbed of unsubstantiated rumor. “I’ve never seen a place like this in my life. Everyone wants to say something negative,” Hunt adds. There is much to be said positively in support of Ken Hunt. His various organizations have given publically and privately to LGBT causes and organizations. Locally, one only has to look at the 75 or so memberships that Hunt has donated to the Brian Neal Fitness & Health Foundation, whose members can be seen working out in group classes multiple times a week. Additionally, Hunt has offered his space as a rehearsal hall for dancers competing in the annual “Dancing with the South Florida Stars,” traditionally a soldout event. For seniors, Steel Gym offers free memberships to those over 62 through the Silver Sneakers program, an insurance-based preventative maintenance issue. The benefits for the elderly are witnessed daily, including packed Silver Sneakers group classes. While it is time to put a stop to the rumors swirling around the future of Steel Gym, the problem is compounded when one realizes that Steel Gym is not the only tenant with complaints against Rivercrest. In the future, the Agenda will be giving full voice to those who find their current leases and storefronts to be unworkable. In the meantime, Steel Gym is here to stay. As for the rest, well, we’ll keep you posted.

he rumor mill has been grinding its maze of speculation, mixed with misinformation,, about the future of Steel Gym Fort Lauderdale, located within the Shoppes of Wilton Manors. Once the site of Better Bodies Gym, and then Island City Health & Fitness, the location has seen its share of owners come and go within the past nine years, so there’s some reason to pay attention when word hits the streets that now Steel Gym is in danger of closing its doors. Here are the facts: On April 23, 2014, lawyer George Castrataro filed a motion for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy on behalf of the Steel Gym Fort Lauderdale LLC, the holding company of this branch of the Steel Gym enterprise with other locations in Miami, New York and Fire Island. On the surface, the court documents reveal that the Wilton Manors location has filed for protection against the gym’s landlord, Rivercrest Realty Investors. Additional creditors listed on the filing are FastPrintz LLC and attorney Dana A. Clayton, with the Ackerman law office’s Miami location. At one point last February, Rivercrest Realty served paperwork on Steel Gym Fort Lauderdale LLC for non-payment of rent, and the rumors began immediately flying among gym members that the facility was about to be close and padlocked. The filing for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy has only added fuel to the gossip. As with all things, there are several sides to every story. In an effort to stop the rumors and replace them with facts, the Agenda did its own investigation into the situation and discovered a very different reality. “I am definitely in this for the long haul,” gym owner Ken Hunt told the Agenda,” dispelling any hint that the gym is about to close. “We are not closing,” he said. “What I am doing is fighting a constant and on-going battle (with the owners of the Shoppes of Wilton Manors). Since the moment we assumed ownership from Island City Health & Fitness, we have been besieged by false promises from the landloard. “I didn’t realized the magnitude of the issues with the physical structure of the building. Before Jeffrey Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy, there was Leopold and Loeb. In the 1920s, University of Chicago law students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb met, became lovers, and then decided to commit the “perfect crime.” Influenced by Nietzsche’s Ubermenschen philosophy (suggesting that superior men, “supermen,” could rise above the laws bounding average men), Leopold and Loeb kidnapped and killed 14-yearold Robert Franks. After a sensational murder trial, both men were found guilty yet spared a death sentence. Numerous film and stage adaptations have depicted the two men’s relationship, including Hitchcock’s “Rope” and cult classic, gay indie film “Swoon.” “Thrill Me¬: The Leopold

SIZZLING SUMMER FITNESS TIPS

R

May 28, 2014

22

emember this summer to relax, take some extra time in the gym to fine tune your workouts, pack your sunscreen and revel in all of the events and action in South Florida! Here are a few of my top summer fitness tips. They are simple and easy to follow, so heed my advice and enjoy yourselves. 1. Remember that stretching is a vital component of overall fitness. Stretch vigorously and for several minutes before doing any cardio routine like cycling, running and swimming. For weight training, stretch lightly before working out, and more between sets and after your workout. 2. A cocktail or glass of wine are a delight around the pool or cabana, but overdoing it can pack on the pounds, deplete your energy and prove fatal to your workouts. Is that second Long Island Iced Tea really worth it? 3. Modalities like hydro-therapy, massage, and acupuncture, etc. can aid your fitness lifestyle by relieving pain, speeding recovery and adding to your overall well being. Treat yourself this summer! 4. Music can rev you up and motivate your work-outs – if your gym is playing tired tunes, then bring your own. 5. Guys sweat more in the summer. Carry a clean towel with you to the gym and a few anti-bacterial wipes so that you can keep equipment clean for yourself and others. 6. Stay hydrated throughout the day and during your work-outs. Chug water regularly and don’t wait until you are thirsty. Sports drinks for the most part

contain too much sugar…good old H2O is tops. 7. Beginning at age 25 most people begin to lose about a half a pound of muscle per year. Regular and progressive weight training helps maintain and build lean muscle. Why not beef up your weight training this summer? If you’ve never worked out, take some time and learn this summer. 8. Have a few extra pounds you want to shed quickly? To jump start your fatburning, try 20 minutes of cardio, i.e. treadmill, elliptical on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. But make sure to eat breakfast soon after this and always before your major workout. 9. Good nutrition, weight training (free weights and machines) and cardio-vascular training (running, swimming, cycling) are the three elements of any sound program. You need to have all of these to succeed and look fabulous. This summer try reading more to improve your nutritional knowledge. Try a new workout regime. Get out and run, cycle or swim, etc. 10. The warmer weather is better for joints and muscles while exercising, so go for it! Just don’t overdo it, use sunscreen and chug water. And let me repeat this, always remember the importance of stretching and warming up. Enjoy your summer and stay fit and happy! Use down time to get an extra pump in the gym! asy to make and fast, as well as cheap and delish! What more can you ask for! Frozen Phyllo tart shells bake up to crispy perfection that’s heavenly with this warm, rich, creamy filling. They are so easy to prepare with canned crabmeat. Place your little Phyllo shells on an ungreased baking pan. In a small bowl, whisk the egg, milk, mayonnaise, flour and salt until smooth. Stir in the crab, cheese and chopped onion. Spoon into the tart shells. Bake at 375° for 9-11 minutes or until set. Garnish with sliced onions or a pinch of cayenne pepper if you like. You are the chef! Serve warm. DINING

BY RICHARD DAVID CHAMBERLAIN

SCARFONE’S COAL FIRED PIZZA

S

carfone’s Coal Fired Pizza has finally opened on the ground floor of The Gables at Wilton Park. We say “finally” because the Italian restaurant has been being built-out within the apartment and town house complex for just under a year--an eternity for pizza fans that can barely wait out the silence between text messages these days. Well, the place opened last Tuesday to much fanfare and a packed house, with the resulting buzz reaching beehive proportions. The centerpiece of the full-service restaurant is its large coal fired oven, which is fully exposed to diners along with its open kitchen and prep station. With wood logs stacked teepee style, blazing atop the red-hot coals, it commands attention and sets a warm atmosphere that can be found nowhere else on the Drive. The restaurant features upscale Italian dining—both inside and out—with light jazz music setting the tone for a delightful eating experience. Despite the restaurant’s name, there is much more to Scarfone’s than pizza, although both samples of Signature Pizzas we tried—The Feast ($17) with thin crust topped by freshly made mozzarella, imported San Marzano plum tomato sauce, Romano cheese, extra virgin olive oil and Italian sausage, meatball, pepperoni and ham; and The Sicilian Barbeque ($17) with diced breaded chicken, ham, roasted red pepper, and red onions in a Sicilianstyled sweet honey barbeque sauce— were incredible, and put all other local pizzas to shame. We grazed through starters including Meatballs (the size of baseballs) served with ricotta cheese and tomato sauce ($9.75), housemade Fresh Garlic Ciabatta Bread ($3.50), and Fried Calamari ($9.75)—so subtle and crisp that you won’t want to share, though there’s plenty for two. The same can be said for the Par-

migiana Crime Family Famous Chicken Parmesan ($16)—a large platter of delicious flavor and traditional joy that makes you want to apply for Italian citizenship immediately. Chef/ owner Danny Scarfone, whose favorite phrase is Mangia! Mangia!, adds something secret to his Chicken Scarfone ($16). It’s easy to see that the boneless chicken breast is sautéed with mushrooms and artichoke hearts, and served over spaghetti (gluten-free is available); but it’s the incredibly subtle pink cream sauce that seals this deal, and if you can find out what’s in it, let us know. The Coal Oven Wings (10 for $11.50) are by far the best wings we have ever tasted. Blackened by the 900-degree oven to perfection, these wings are available in specialty flavors including traditional hot, sweet chili, teriyaki, Sicilian barbecue, and honey garlic—and all served with caramelized onions. As any Italian family knows, Sunday is reserved for Sunday Gravy ($16). Traditionally, Italians in the old country gather ‘round a large table (preferably outside) with large bottles of wine and crusty bread to discuss the week past and get involved in everyone else’s business. Though it wasn’t Sunday, we submerged ourselves in Scarfone’s Sunday Gravy and discovered something akin to therapy in a bowl. It’s that good. Split into parts, it’s little more than pasta, sausage, meatballs, and tomato sauce. But put together, it’s the new soul food. Scarfone’s has a full bar with Happy Hour available all day and all night. Two-for-one drink chips are so yesterday’s news that clever Scarfone’s did away with them completely. Yes, there will be drink specials nightly, as well as a bar menu for those who want to try tapa-size portions of the dining room fare. They’ll be open late, so stagger on in post-bar crawl, and remember to say Florida Agenda sent you.

X RATED

F

irst the bad news: “X-Men Days of Future Past” (20th Century Fox/Marvel) is yet another example of the unnecessary overuse of 3-D. The few scenes in which it is best utilized would probably be as effective in 2-D. Also, newly-out actress Ellen Page is completely wasted as Kitty Pryde, whose powers of intangibility extend to assisting others to travel through time. It’s too bad she can’t travel back in time to tell the screenwriters what a corny idea that is and ask them to better explain the morphing of her abilities. Here’s how the time travel in “X-Men Days of Future Past” (get it?) works: in the not too distant future, an army of indestructible sentinels, invented by mad

government scientist Trask (Peter Dinklage), whose sole function is to hunt down and obliterate mutants, is getting closer to achieving its goal. In a last ditch effort to prevent that from happening Logan/ Wolverine (Hugh Jackman with his obligatory bare chest and ass) is sent back to the 1970s to prevent the reprobate Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) from assassinating Trask, thereby rewriting history, especially for the hunted and misunderstood mutants. The time travel element allows both the present/future version of Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and Erik/Magneto (out actor Sir Ian MacKellan) to appear on-screen together, finally putting their longstanding differences aside. It also

permits new and expanded insight into what went wrong in their relationship, in the early 1970s. Logan/ Wolverine, the only one built tough enough to withstand the potential dangers of such time travel is sent back to 1973 where he first convinces the young, damaged and defeated younger Xavier (James MacAvoy) of the purpose of his quest. Joined by Xavier’s mentee and personal caretaker Hank/Beast (Nicholas Hoult), they set out to free an imprisoned youthful Erik/ Magneto (Michael Fassbender), who has been found guilty of assassinating JFK (don’t ask!). In the movie’s best scenes, the ones that combine dazzling special effects and brilliant humor, the velocity skills of Peter/Quicksilver

long time in the making (no thanks to Barbra Streisand), the movie adaptation of Larry Kramer’s difficult and devastating “The Normal Heart” (HBO Films) finally premiered on May 25. It’s a fitting debut for Memorial Day Weekend as there are so many friends, family and loved ones who must not be forgotten. “The Normal Heart” opens in 1981 with the arrival, at the dock, of the boat to Fire Island Pines. Passenger Ned (Mark Ruffalo), a semi-autobiographical character created by Kramer for the play and screenplay, is a writer (of course) who has pissed off more than a few of Fire Island’s regulars for his views on promiscuity, including those he published in a book. Ned, a keen observer of his fellow gay men, remains aloof, although he makes a good effort to partake when necessary. The birthday celebration for Craig (Jonathan Groff), lover of closeted ex-marine/ current financial guy Bruce (Taylor Kitsch, who is hereby forgiven for all of his past bad acting choices), is one example. But the festive atmosphere will be short-lived. Beginning with the touchstone of the New York Times article about a rare cancer in homosexuals, “The

Normal Heart” beats hard, loud, fast and erratically. Sanford, a shop owner who recognizes Ned at the doctor’s office, has KS lesions. Dr. Brookner (Julia Roberts) has seen several patients like Sanford, as she tells Ned, but isn’t getting the response she needs from gay organizations. Brookner enlists Ned, and his notorious big mouth, to get the word out about the possible connection between the cancer and sex. Then things really begin to escalate. Craig dies. Ned organizes a meeting with Brookner and members of the community. When it goes badly, Ned “welcomes” Brookner to “gay politics.” The one high point in Ned’s life is a meeting with New York Times writer Felix (Matt Bomer). Although Ned considers himself to be out of Felix’s league, a romance develops. But this bright light is overshadowed

by the increasing number of deaths, the mistreatment of GRID (gay related immune deficiency, an early moniker for AIDS) patients in hospitals, the lack of government funding and the closeted mayor’s dismissal of the crisis. The 1982 official formation of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis, with Bruce as president is a turning point. Executive director Tommy (a brilliant Jim Parsons) becomes the voice of reason (and much needed humor) during some of the film’s most heated moments. Shortly after the organization holds a successful fundraiser, Ned asks Felix, clearly a stabilizing influence in his life, to move in with him. But Ned’s short fuse and sharp tongue continues to get him, and, by extension, the organization into trouble. Making matters worse, Felix discovers a KS lesion on his foot. If you

(Evan Peters) are enlisted to assist in Erik/Magneto’s Pentagon prison break. This section alone makes it worthwhile to sit through the more than two hours of seat rattling bombast. What follows is a series of exotic locales, from China to Vietnam to Paris, as well as a considerable amount of time spent in Washington DC and environs, and a race against time to stop the shape-shifting and determined Raven/Mystique from carrying out her mission. Certainly not the worst installment in the series, it’s far from the best (that honor goes to the very queer “X-Men 2”). Nevertheless, from the perspective of this non-comic book geek, it’s a satisfying serving of early summer entertainment. haven’t already cried a few times at this point during the movie, check your pulse and be sure to have a box of tissues nearby. As a director, Ryan Murphy is no, say, Mike Nichols. However, he holds his own, even pulling some of his own trademark visual tricks out of his hat. He also gets exceptional performances out of Roberts, whose “holy terror” Brookner is confined to a wheelchair due to a childhood polio infection. Joe Mantello, as Ned’s friend Micky, as well as the aforementioned Kitsch, Bomer, Parsons, and of course, Ruffalo also deliver career-high performances. To his credit, Murphy also doesn’t shy away from the sex, some of which is depicted graphically, a necessary component of the story. As with HBO’s award-winning adaptation of Tony Kushner’s “Angels In America” (directed by Nichols), “The Normal Heart” is finding its audience not in movie theaters, but in people’s homes. In some ways, that’s probably preferable as “The Normal Heart” is a not-a-dry-eye-in-the-house production. What queen wants to be seen leaving a movie theater with bloodshot eyes, tear-stained cheeks and a runny nose anyway?
