Pinellas County, FL – In a vote of 6-1, the Pinellas County Commissioners voted to replace the word “sex” with “gender” in the county’s human rights law, providing additional protection to transgendered individuals, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The change, made last week, will give transgenders the same protections as everyone else, granting them freedom to be treated equally. Should a transgendered individual receive discrimination in the workplace or in housing, said individual would be able to protest a n d pursue legal action. Though it also allows them to use bathrooms assigned to whichever sex they identify with, take note that the law as a whole does not apply to religious groups, institutions, public schools or “businesses with fewer than five employees.”

Anti-Gay Condo Association Retracts New Policy Venice, FL – Recently, we reported on Casa Di Amici, the Florida condo association that adopted a new policy which would effectively ban non-married couples (gay or straight) from buying or leasing a space within the community. Now, the association that caused quite the uproar has retracted the policy, claiming that it wasn’t meant to ban gay couples. Board member Bill Moniz says the intent was never to discriminate, but rather “to keep corporations from coming in and buying up multiple units in the neighborhood,” according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. “We never wanted to prevent anyone from living here – I intend to make this right,” Moniz told the Tribune. The condo board has approved the changes to the declaration (which changed “married couples” to “any two people”), but condo owners still

Equality Florida Wants Cities to Suspend Ties with Russian Sister Cities Tallahassee, FL – Equality Florida posted a news release on their blog Monday morning, asking members of the community to “suspend their Sister/Friendship City relationships with Russian cities.” The organization has sent letters to the mayors of Gainesville, Orlando, Sarasota, St. Petersburg and Tallahassee, all of which have Sister Cities in Russia. “One important goal of the Sister City relationship is

to encourage travel and cultural exchange amongst the citizens of our cities,” said Nadine Smith, Equality Florida’s executive director. “The anti-gay laws and lawless violence now being encouraged in Russia negate this promise, not only for Florida’s LGBT citizens, but also for all who believe in equality, diversity and tolerance.” Smith added, “By continuing Sister/Friendship City relationships with Russian cities, we are turning a blind eye to the atrocities that are occuring in Russia. It is time to take action, and in doing so, to let the Russian government know that their treatment of the LGBT community is unacceptable.” As of print, Gainesville, St. Petersburg and Tallahassee have responded, telling Equality Florida that they are “currently reviewing the requests.”

MAYOR RESNICK COMMENTS ON MICHAEL RAJNER When asked about Michael Rajner and his dog Gidget’s controversial campaign, Gary Resnick answered with the following statement: “Michael is a terrific gay activist and was instrumental in leading the fight against the ban on gay marriage being placed in the FL Constitution. Hopefully he will continue to work areas of the state to repeal this Ban. The Broward League of Cities is tremendously supportive of the GLBT community. Two openly-gay elected officials have served as President including John Fiore back in the early 2000’s and myself in 2009. And now at least 4 openly gay elected officials serve on its Board from Oakland Park, Wilton Manors, Ft. Lauderdale and Margate, and it does offer domestic partner benefits to employees requesting such benefits. The League has a tremendous record of supporting GLBT elected officials from all cities throughout Broward.”

Fort Meade, MD – Army private Bradley Manning was just sentenced to 35 years in a military prison for leaking over 700,000 documents to the controversial website, WikiLeaks. However, Manning has just revealed his plan to live out the rest of his life as a woman, asking that he be referred to as “Chelsea Manning” from now on. On Thursday morning, Manning’s attorney read a statement from the army private on NBC’s “Today” show. “I am Chelsea Manning,” the statement read. “I am a female. Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible. I hope that you will support me in this transition. I also request that, starting today, you refer to me by my new name and use the female pronoun (except in office mail to the confinement facility). I look forward to receiving letters from supporters and having the opportunity to write back.” The letter was signed “Chelsea E. Manning.”

attacks on gay people in Russia.” RT anchor Yulia Shapovalova attempted to get Kirchick back on topic, but it became clear Kirchick was not going to cooperate: “I’m not really interested in talking about Bradley Manning,” said Kirchick. “I’m interested in talking about the horrific environment of homophobia in Russia right now, and to let the Russian gay people know that they have friends and allies in solidarity from people all over the world, and that we’re not going to be silenced in the face [of ] horrific repression that is perpetrated by your paymaster, Vladimir Putin. That’s what I’m here to talk about.” By this point, RT cut his video feed, removing him from the panel on screen. Later on in the day, Kirchick tweeted that the network also ordered his airport taxi driver to kick Kirchick out on the side of the highway instead of taking him to his Stockholm Airport destination. RT later told the Washington Blade that they found it “surprising” that Kirchick would expect RT to pay for his cab fare after speaking out against the network.

made in the meeting offensive, but again, it was a confidential meeting set in the privacy of my office, where none of us are suppose to worry about what we say. I stand strong in my First Amendment right to freedom of speech and our right to privacy. And as an immigrant, I consider this the greatest privilege of being a U.S. citizen.” Chan went on to say, “My belief, my views are mine. I do not impose that on anybody else. I’m not asking anybody to agree with me.”

Billionaire Philanthropist Announces Big Change Chicago, IL – Col. James Pritzker, who funded a study on transgender people in the military, has announced that he is transgender, according to Crain’s Chicago Business. Crain’s Chicago Business quotes an email sent to the employees of the Pritzker Military Library, stating: “As of Aug. 16, 2013, J.N. Pritzker will undergo an

official legal name change, and now be known as Jennifer Natalya Pritzker. This change will reflect the beliefs of her true identity that she has held privately and will now share publicly. Pritzker now identifies herself as a woman for all business and personal undertakings.” The publication reports that a spokeswoman declined their questions regarding Pritzker’s sexuality or hormone therapy. According to Forbes, Pritzker has a net worth of $1.5 billion, and is widely known for her philanthropy (namely preservation and restoration of historic buildings, according to the Advocate) in addition to her accomplishments as a military veteran. Pritzker served in the Army for 11 years, and for 16 in the Nation Guard, and recently opened the Pritzker Military Library in Chicago in 2011. According to the Advocate, in July of 2013, Pritzker’s Tawani Foundation awarded $1.35 million to the Palm Center for a study of issues that surround transgender service in the military.

Representing San Antonio’s ninth district, Elisa Chan held a press conference last week, where she blasted the staffer who recorded her exchange, in addition to defending her opinion, citing the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Moscow, Russia – Jamie Kirchick, an award-winning journalist and former columnist of Advocate, was kicked off of Russia Today, a Russian governmentowned network, for speaking about the country’s ban on “homosexual propaganda.” Kirchick was invited to join a panel to discuss the sentencing of Chelsea Manning (formerly Bradley), but the Kremlin-owned network got more than they bargained for when Kirchick appeared in rainbow suspenders, refusing to stay on topic. “Being here on a Kremlin-funded propaganda network, I’m going to wear my gay pride suspenders and I’m going to speak out against the horrific antigay legislation that Vladimir Putin has signed into law, that passed unanimously by the Russian Duma that criminalizes homosexual propaganda,” Kirchick started. “It effectively makes it illegal to talk about homosexuality in public. Graves was furious over the graphic content of the messages being discussed in detail so openly (during the court date, the detective mentioned the teenage couple together, a nude Kaitlyn Hunt, and even a video of Hunt sexually touching herself while naked). In a statement made by Graves last week, she said, “What happened to

ero Beach, FL – Kaitlyn Hunt has been in the headlines for months now, mostly asking the question that’s on many minds: is this 19-year-old girl being discriminated against because she’s gay? Or are Hunt’s parents playing the gay card because they think it will get her off the hook easier? Hunt was 18 when she was charged with two felony counts of lewd and lascivious battery after allegedly having sexual relations with a girlfriend from school, who was 14. If the case wasn’t up in the air before, it is now. A detective for Indian River Sheriff’s Office, Jeremy Shepard, has testified that Hunt gave the underage girl an iPod to exchange texts, explicit videos and nude pictures in secret, according to CNN. Detective Shepard also testified that according to the texts and videos, he learned that the two were meeting in private as recently as just a few weeks ago. Shepard noted that occasionally, the younger girl would initiate the conversation, but ultimately, it was Hunt who gave her the iPod to communicate with in the first place. When Julia Graves (Hunt’s lawyer) took the stand, she said, “We’re not going to contest all the evidence. But what we would ask for, is that the defendant [be able to be] bonded out, to be placed on house arrest without any electronic communication of any kind... We think that would keep the judicial process safe.” Judge Robert Pegg did not see eyeto-eye with Graves. “It’s overwhelming that Ms. Hunt has chosen to violate the conditions of her bond deliberately and willfully on several different occasions,”

a [statement] like ‘numerous texts and inappropriate language’ without details?” She went on to say that with the school year starting, she “can only imagine the chatter at the school.” But in the end, Graves truly believes that two teen students were involved “in a consensual relationship.” But in the state of Florida, people cannot consent to sex under the age of 16, and the victim was only 14 at the alleged time. “Yes one that under the current law is a crime, but still consensual,” Graves added. “It was brought to an abrupt end and the other ‘adult’ teen faces up to 30 years in prison. Her opinion is ignored by the State.” Based on the new charges, prosecutors have filed a new charge against Hunt for “transmission of material harmful to minor by electronic equipment.” Though her original charges would force Hunt to serve a maximum 15 year sentence, her possible maximum time has now doubled. She is held on bond pending trail at the moment, and is limited to communicating with lawyers, guards, fellow inmates and even certain visitors. Hunt’s family has not commented on any of the latest charges.

SEXCAPADES

VALYN CALHOUN “ Men Seem to Think I’m Either Untouchable or a Free-for-All” BY GRANT JAMES “Sexcapades” is a three-part series on sex, covering everything from sexual addiction to the facts on STDs. Its purpose is not to scare readers into celibacy, but to encourage you to engage in healthy behaviors, activities and lifestyles.

As a sex addict, how has sex affected your life and career? Do you think that it’s made you the person you are today, or has it hindered you? In a way it’s hard to know who I would have been had sex never been such a big part of my life. I think, like everything, it has both hindered me at times while also going me the inspiration needed for my art career.

Following your HIV contraction, how has your life changed? Do you feel that it has affected your art? I’ve become much more realistic in my goals. Since sexuality was always a pervasive theme in my art, it has definitely taken me a while to get my “flow” back. It’s like I have this new place to draw inspiration from I just haven’t quite figured out how to yet. I’ve seen you post some upsetting things on your Facebook page regarding the stigma of being HIV positive. People criticizing you, judging you, etc. How has it affected your sex and personal life? Unfortunately the majority of harsh criticism I receive about my status is from the gay community. Men seem to think I’m either untouchable or a free-for-all. I find myself more cynical and guarded about dating and sex than ever before. Do you still consider yourself a sex addict? Thankfully, no. I still have days that I can feel the compulsion but I am now able to recognize it for what it is.

“Divided,” by Valyn Calhoun

Who or what is your current source of inspiration? I find inspiration in the darker aspects of life.

In nightmares, sad days, lost chances. Somehow, if I am able to capture an emotion like that, I feel like I have it under my control. What can people expect from your upcoming exhibit? This exhibit will give people the chance to see my body of work leading up to my diagnosis and some images taken of me by Rita Baum after the fact. It is rare that the muse and artist can switch roles so easily and that is a big part of my upcoming show. People can expect sexuality, dark emotions, bright colors and twisted thoughts. Do you have any advice for any young members of the LGBT community? Go for your dreams. Don’t wait to get bad news to grab life by the balls. Be yourself. Don’t edit yourself. Valyn Calhoun’s new exhibit will be on view until September 27. ActivistArtistA Gallery. 422 W Industrial Ave, Boynton Beach, 33426.

ocal artist Valyn Calhoun has had a rough time in 2013. He was diagnosed with AIDS on December 28, 2012, and his life changed forever. However, coming to terms with his sexual addiction (he admits there were multiple partners a day) and his newly contracted virus wasn’t the difficult part. I sat down with the local photographer to talk about his addiction to sex and his upcoming exhibit in West Palm Beach.

Toni Braxton: Back to Business

Bruno Mars in Miami

Toni Braxton may have appeared in recent headlines due to a “wardrobe malfunction,” but the Grammyaward winning R&B singer continues to truck on. After being diagnosed with lupus, Braxton went on a brief musical hiatus, but now the singer has returned to the spotlight in a whole new way. Braxton will be releasing a collaborative studio album with singer Babyface, due out December 3, 2013. The album, called “Love, Marriage, and Divorce,” will allegedly sport a “Mars vs. Venus” theme. “The whole perspective is guy and girl, Mars vs. Venus,” says Babyface. “Even if you’re in love, you’re in love for different reasons.” Braxton added – “I think because Babyface and I have both gone through divorces, we can relate and we can collaborate together on this topic.” Yikes. Sounds...cathartic? 8 p.m. James L. Knight Center. 400 SE 2nd Ave, Miami, 33131.

Bruno Mars is one of those artists who dreamed of making a hit single, made said single, then continued to release hit after hit after hit. He worked hard, chased his dreams, and got what he wanted. Now that he’s acknowledged and respected within the industry, Mars is able to do more mature work. His album from last year, “Unorthodox Jukebox,” proved that the singer was capable of producing a cohesive body of mature work, with a little help from some extraordinary vocals. The Hawaiian singer-songwriter has won several awards for his work, including a Grammy, an American Music Award and a Billboard Music award. The Moonshine Jungle Tour is Mars’ second concert tour in support of last year’s “Unorthodox Jukebox,” so if you missed him last run, now’s your chance. 8 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

Dillon Francis in Downtown Fort Lauderdale If you’re visiting (or just on a staycation) this Labor Day weekend, take note: House producer Dillon Francis will be spinning a DJ set at Revolution Live in Downtown Fort Lauderdale on Friday. The electro producer/ DJ has often been cited as one of the pioneers of the moombahton genre. Francis has worked with the likes of Calvin Harris, Diplo, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Maluca and many other well-respected house and electro artists. If house gets you going, this is the Friday night party for you. 9 p.m. Revolution Live. 100 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

Robin Thicke and Pharell: Live Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” is already a contender for song of the year – It’s mainstream pop with a modern R&B edge. Simple, yet effective. Though there was intense controversy over the lyrics and message of the music video, which feminists believe to be sexist and chauvinistic, it’s hard not to like the song after hearing it a dozen times. The Pharrell-produced track evokes playfulness and sex appeal that we haven’t seen in mainstream music in years. Thicke’s icy blue eyes are just an added bonus, right? Pharell will be joining Thicke onstage for the performance of the song, in what could potentially be the biggest party moment of the year. 10 p.m. Fountainebleau Miami Beach. 4441 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, 33140.

HEALTH

DON’T OVERDO IT The Pitfalls of Overtraining BY TOM BONANTI

W

Change your workout routine every three months. Use combinations of light and heavy weights. Split up your muscle groups, ie, work chest and back one day, lower body the next, shoulders and arms on the third day, rest on the fourth day and begin the cycle over again. Always incorporate at least one or two days rest into your training regime. Secondly, vary your training methods. Use combinations of free weights and machines. Use good lifting techniques and perform each exercise according to proper form. Alternate between easy, moderate and heavy periods of training, this is known as periodization. As a general rule, one or two days of intense, ass-kicking training should be followed by an equal number of easier aerobic training days. Thirdly, pay attention to sensible, scientific nutritional practices and get enough sleep and rest. If you are really training hard, chances are you will need to add supplements to your diet. Consult your physician concerning these needs. Remember, you can’t work a ten hour day, train hard in the gym, and deal with the demands of the “rat-race” on six hours of sleep a day. Eight to ten hours per day should be the norm for supermen like you. Over training is a curse every body builder faces from time to time. When it occurs, meet it as a challenge with rest and your knowledge of the human body. Contact TrainerTomB@aol.com for more tips on sensible but, challenging workouts.

August 28, 2013 H 21

eight training has been a permanent part of your life for years. You never skip doing cardio. You are used to getting hard-core results. Then, suddenly you lose interest in the gym. Your workouts lack animal intensity and your drive is going down the tubes. In addition, you find that your body is tired and achy, your sleep sucks, and you have even had the symptoms of a cold or flu that you just can’t seem to shake. If you have found yourself in this sorry condition, don’t throw in the towel. You are simply experiencing symptoms of over training, technically referred to as cumulative micro-trauma. It is a sort of burn-out that affects all athletes and body-builders at some point or another. There are basically two ways to cope with over training. You can avoid it or you can treat it. If you have to treat it, it’s too late! But you’re not sunk yet. Stop training at once and get some much needed rest. Assess what you have been doing in the gym. Consult your physician to talk about your fatigue, weight loss, aches and pains. Take some time off and do some reading and perhaps find an expert trainer who can put you back on the right course. You can avoid over training altogether by following a few basic rules and using good old common sense. First, incorporate sensible, scientific weight training principles into your training regime. Identify the goals you want to achieve and come up with a workout and nutritional strategy.

CROISSAN’TIME

DINING

for a quiche, but you generally don’t want any crunchiness in your soufflé. We were in heaven with our duck pâté sandwich on a baguette ($8.75). There are several garnishes available with the sandwich, such as lettuce, tomato, cheese, mayonnaise, etc. We opted for just a dab of Dijon mustard and some cornichons (mini pickles). If you keep it simple, you get more of the taste of what you are really paying for—in this case, it’s the pâté. We then decided to be a little more adventurous. The best thing about the chicken pie ($8.50) was the pâte feuilletée (puff pastry) that encased it. The pastry is rarely made as well in Florida as it is at this bakery. The filling was juicy and quite good, but any more mushrooms would have made it a mushroom pie instead. By the way, Croissan’Time will prepare the dough for you to take out. That’s good for baking-challenged people like me. We had to have dessert, what with endless choices of pastries and cakes— so pretty you almost don’t want to eat them. But eat we did—a very pretty “key lime tart” ($5.95) that perhaps wasn’t made of true key lime, with a slightly dense pastry base. But the mini “napoleons” (millefeuille in French) with sips of excellent espresso coffee made the Parisian illusion complete. As if that weren’t enough, we took with us a few white chocolates shaped and decorated like tiny dolphins... for later. And they were delicious! If you go to Croissan’Time on Saturday or Sunday for brunch, you can enjoy live Jazz music. And, if you do, tell them Florida Agenda sent you.

roissan’Time French Bakery and Fine Foods has a well deserved reputation for having what is arguably the best French bread in Florida. Founded 27 years ago by French baker Bernard Casse, this bakery’s most popular items are clearly the baguettes ($2.75) and mini croissants ($1.50) made with butter from Normandy. But the dinner rolls (60¢ ea.) are made from the same dough as the baguettes, so if you’re having a buffet, the rolls are a more practical alternative—and just as delicious. Croissan’Time is also the only bakery in Florida (as far as we know) that makes ficelles (meaning “string”), those very skinny baguettes that have more tasty and crunchy crust in proportion to soft crumb (what is called mie in French). Croissan’Time is also a charming little café, where you can sit inside or outside and pretend that you’re in Paris. When going to eat at a bakery whose specialty is the bread itself, it’s best to keep that in mind when ordering your food (i.e., sandwiches are best). There is no service beyond the counter, so we placed our order and waited to be called outside. We started with the soup of the day, seafood, and a bacon and asparagus soufflé ($4.95). While the soup was good, we prefer their pea soup, when it is available. Even though the soufflé was warmed up, it managed to retain the consistency of a classic soufflé. I don’t know how they do it. If there had been a little less asparagus, and if those pieces had been cooked more thoroughly, it would have been a perfect soufflé. The problem seems to be an obsession with recent culinary trends that call for undercooked vegetables. That would have been OK

BLUE CHEESE SAUCE

RECIPE

BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY

B

lue cheeses are typically aged in a temperature-controlled environment such as a cellar. In the European Union many blue cheeses such as Roquefort (France), Gorgonzola (Italy) and Stilton (England) carry a protected designation of origin, meaning they can bear the name only if they have been made in that region of that country. The characteristic flavor of blue cheeses tends to be sharp and a bit salty. The smell of this cheese is both due to the mold, and the types of bacteria encouraged to grow on the cheese. I think the more stinky the cheese, the more tasty the sauce… 8 ounces good blue cheese, crumbled (I use one from Wisconsin and it’s great. But you can use any kind)

• 1 -2 shallots, finely chopped • 2 tablespoons Brandy or Cognac • 1 good pinch of fresh ground pepper • 2 tablespoons butter • 1 tablespoon flour • 3/4 cup heavy cream

Heat the butter in a pan over a medium heat and cook the shallots until they’re lightly colored. Add the flour and stir, then throw in the brandy and slowly whisk in the heavy cream. Add the crumbled blue cheese. Whisk constantly. Add the pepper. You can add smashed walnuts too—they add a crunch! You are a chef! Make a big batch and freeze in small portions. Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN

TRAVEL

Brew City Puts Out Welcome Mat

FLICKR

BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

T

hirty years ago, Wisconsin became the first state in the union to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. At the time, it was a bold move—made even bolder because it happened in Wisconsin, a state more known for its breweries than for its stance on gay rights. What was to become the home to the world’s largest brewery companies—Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co. (later sold to Pabst), Blatz (whose name and formula was later sold and distributed by several breweries and is currently under the Miller collection of brands), Pabst (now headquartered in Los Angeles), and Miller/Coors—Milwaukee’s name is derived from the Potawatomi indian word minwaking meaning “gathering place by the water.” The “water” in this case being Lake Michigan which provides the area much of its recreational opportunities. The gay area of Milwaukee is centered around the Walker’s Point and Downtown sections of the city. Walker’s Point is known for the $10 tours of the Milwaukee Brewing Company (613 S 2nd St), where you can drink your tour fee in free beer and flavor test your way through limited release craft drafts. Be sure to also

pick up the complimentary chip for a free beer at Hamburger Mary’s located a block away (2130 S Kinnickinnic Ave). Mary’s is home to the one-pound burger known as the Proud Mary, currently priced at $14.25, so you know it has to be good. Our favorite Walker’s Point hangout is a place called Woody’s (1579 S 2nd St) where there’s peanut shells on the floor, sports events on the big screen, pool, darts, and video games. The bartenders pour with a heavy hand. It must be from all the pushups they practice during the day, since these are some CUTE bodies prancing behind the horseshoe-shaped bar. They don’t make ’em like Woody’s anymore. Less traditional, but no less fun is Kruz Bar (354 E National Ave). In the Harbor View Neighborhood, it’s a bit of a schlep from the gay hood, but well worth the effort if you want to see and be seen. Kruz gets its name from the cruising that goes on here. And not a video screen in sight anywhere. Don’t miss the outside patio for a true Milwaukee decorating experience. We’d try to explain, but in this case seeing is believing. At LaCage NiteClub (801 S 2nd St), there are two dance floors, six bars, and

large and small video screen popping up all over. The noise level is as high as the energy gage, so rest up before venturing forth to LaCage. For a full body workout, try the Animal House Gym, which is actually located just across the Milwaukee border in the neighboring town of West Allis (2030 South 55th St.). It’s a 10,000 square foot warehouse of well-maintained equipment and free weights, for the more grunt in-

clined. Dress in full cruise mode. Winning the prize as the best local hotel, the Aloft Milwaukee (1230 N Old World 3rd St) has a trendy industrial feel to the place—a universal theme shared by all the Aloft Hotels (a division of Starwood). With views of the Milwaukee River and an indoor pool, you’ll find the downtown location and the cutting edge staff a perfect fit for your lifestyle. And yes, there’s a restaurant serving Milwaukee beers. Perfect.
