t. Petersburg, FL – Charlie Crist announced his Democratic candidacy for governor in 2014 at a rally in St. Petersburg. The former Republican is going to have a tough year ahead of him; Gov. Rick Scott’s political committee aired its first negative ad before Crist even announced his bid for his old job. When Crist took to the stage, he addressed Scott immediately. “Governor Scott has led like this,” said Crist. “Embrace the ideological fringes, take care of his friends, bully his opponents, hide from the public and the press and run from tough issues.” Scott’s ad cites Crist’s former views compared to his current views, further branding Crist as a political chameleon. “When the people give you the honor of being their governor, you aren’t the governor of any one party, you are the governor of all Floridians,” said Crist on stage. “No matter what they say, it is not a sin to reach across the aisle. It is your obligation to work together.”

Miami, FL – Starting this week, all married couples (including gay couples) employed by the Florida National Guard will apply for health, death and other benefits at federal facilities within the state. Florida National Guard has found a way to allow the benefits to wedded couples without violating Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage, according to the Miami Herald. “In order to meet the state constitution and meet federal intent, we moved the functions from state buildings to federal buildings and we’re in compliance all the way around,” said Lt. Col. James Evans, the director of public affairs for Florida National Guard. “We want to ensure that everyone is treated equally and all Florida National Guard members get their benefits in the same place.” Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida, had high praise for the measure. “We are pleased that gay National Guard members won’t have a separate, more difficult process for getting benefits for their spouses,” said Smith. “This move ensures that the same procedure applies regardless of sexual orientation.”
According to Evans, seven National CHARLIE CRIST ANNOUNCES Guard facilities in Florida will process CANDIDACY FOR GOVERNOR benefits.

alloween is an excuse to wear whatever you want, which is usually something that you wouldn’t dare walk the streets in on any given day. A common trend is to take virtually any character, costume or idea and make it “sexy.” Straight men cross-dress, gay men cross-dress, and celebrities give their stylists a large chunk of money to create the ultimate costume (Heidi Klum is the reigning queen of Halloween). Unfortunately, in addition to all

of the lazy costumes we have to deal with, offensive costumes are becoming quite the go-to. A couple years ago we saw the Casey Anthony costumes. This year we saw the Boston marathon victim costume. Now, a highly disturbing trend has made a recent comeback: blackface. While I was convinced that blackface would never really return, it’s clearly been on the rise for the past few years. This year seemed to be the worst, with Julianne Hough dressing as “Crazy Eyes” from Orange is the New Black. The actress received major backlash from her costume, eventually addressing a sloppy apology via Twitter. During Wicked Manor, a Broward New Times photographer captured a bizarre and crude costume – blackface. The unidentified man was dressed in all pink women’s clothes, with a necklace on that read “Just Married,” accompanied by another man in pink, sans the blackface. The couple was spotted in

New York Grilled Cheese Co., where they began posing for photos with patrons. New Times was unable to identify the couple, and chalked it up to an “interracial gay marriage thing.” To see this in such a liberal city is disheartening to say the least. When we are fighting for equality, this is the last thing that the media needs to see. Obviously this unidentified man does not represent the gay community, but let’s face it: it’s usually always that one person that ruins things for everyone. Will there be guidelines for costumes at next year’s Wicked Manor? Probably not, but why risk it for one night of recognition? Would you think it’s funny We are a divided nation. We need all of the help that we can get. Banding together in times of need is crucial. Why are minorities segregating their selves when they should be uniting? Remember: “United we stand, divided we fall.”

Congressman Comes Out During Campaign for Governor
Rep. Mike Michaud
Michaud wrote in a column that was published by the Bangor Daily News, the Portland Press Herald, and the Associated Press. “They want people to question whether I am gay. Allow me to save them the trouble with a simple, honest answer. ‘Yes I am. But why should it matter?” Michaud has been a representative for six terms and is currently running for governor in 2014 against his polar opposite: Republican Tea Party supporter Paul LePage, who strongly opposes same-sex marriage.

Augusta, ME – Maine State Representative Mike Michaud came out this week, saying that being gay shouldn’t matter in whether voters pick him as their next governor. gender-neutral bathroom in additional to male and female bathrooms, according to WCAU, NBC’s Philadelphia affiliate. “My goal is for Philadelphia to be one of, if not the most, LGBT-friendly cities in the world and a leader on equality issues,” said Nutter. The report goes on to say that the legislation also makes Philadelphia the first city to offer businesses tax credits to encourage providing transgenderspecific health benefits. In addition, the legislation revises Philadelphia’s antidiscrimination law to include transgender people, extends decision-making rights to life partners on medical and other issues, and changes city forms and websites to offer same-sex couple options as well as a transgender option. “This is a city that is truly respecting all its citizens,” said state Philadelphia Rep. Brian Sims. “It is because of that respect that we are indeed a first-class city and we will continue to shine.”

Brighton, CO – Dr. Rebecca Brinkman and Margaret Burd have filed a suit for the right to wed, stating that a civil union denies them crucial rights and privileges. The couple applied for their a marriage license at the Adams County Clerk and Recorder’s office where they were handed a civil union application instead, reports ABC News. The couple refused the application and filed suit for the right to marry with attorney Ralph Ogden. “They rejected this offer because civil unions are more akin to a business relationship than to the expression of dignity, love, respect, and commitment that married heterosexual couples enjoy because they are married,” said Ogden. “However, because Colorado refuses to allow same gender marriages, these federal benefits are denied to members of a civil union.” Ogden argues that civil unions lack the essential rights and access to federal benefits that heterosexual couples are guaranteed. In March 2013, the governor of Colorado signed a bill that allowed civil unions for same-sex couples. However, a 2006 amendment to the state’s constitution restricts marriage to “one man and one woman.”

Manning, is serving a 35-year sentence for sentence for sending over 700,000 secret military and State Department documents to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks while working as an intelligence analyst. Her request for transgender treatment is apparently the first, as the military does not provide treatment for gender dysphoria.

ashington, D.C. – With 61 votes (and the support of President Obama), the U.S. Senate voted in favor of the Employment NonDiscrimination Act on Monday morning. Senators from both sides spoke in support of the legislation, which would make it illegal for employers to fire, refuse to hire, or decline to promote employees on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Following the vote (61-30), the Senate will hold a final up-or-down vote this week. The country’s first elected openly gay senator, Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), took the floor first, asking her peers to vote in favor of ENDA. “I realize that for some, this is not an easy vote,” said Baldwin. “I understand that for some, they may believe that it’s not good politics. But I want to say that I have a deep respect for those who choose to stand on the side of progress for our country this week. So for those that stand up this week and answer the call for courage, I can say with confidence your courage will be respected and remembered when the history of the struggle is written.” Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) was among the many who voted in favor of the bill, claiming that it’s time to move forward. “This is not a major change to law,” said Kirk. “It’s already the law in 21 states, and I think it’s particularly appropriate for an Illinois Republican to speak on behalf of this measure, in the true spirit of Everett McKinley Dirksen and Abraham Lincoln, who gave us the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.” Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) joined Kirk in supporting the bill, saying that it provides all Americans a fair opportunity. “I’m dismayed that so many years have gone by – more than a decade – and this bill still has not become law,” said Collins. “It is time for us to enact this important leglislation.” While no senators took to the floor to oppose the bill, Patrick Leahy (D-VT) had closing remarks for those lawmakers that are against it. “So I hope my fellow senators will come together and support this important bipartisan bill without delay,” said Leahy. “And if the other body has the courage of stnading up for America, to stand up for all Americans – every single American there is – and vote for the same legislation.” President Obama published an op-ed in the Huffington Post over the weekend, urging the Senate to pass the bill, and Monday morning, Dean Heller (R-NV) announced his support, crossing the 60-vote threshold required to prevent a filibuster. The final vote is rumored to take place as early as Wednesday.

“El Beso en la Telarana” Fort Lauderdale has always been the “anglo-gay” side of Miami, but that doesn’t man there isn’t a rich appreciation of Hispanic heritage. With the new premiere of “El Beso en la Telarana” Fort Lauderdale bridges that gap further by creating a play entirely in Spanish. Written by acclaimed Argentinian writer Manuel Puig, “El Beso en la Telarana” may be better known as its film and musical incarnation Kiss of the Spiderwoman. The play revolves around the contrasting passions of two imprisoned men: the rebellious, dangerous Valentin and the effeminate, empathetic Molina. As Valentin grows angrier and more stifled by his imprisonment and the politically unstable Argentina of the time, Molina
escapes further into the fantasy world of his flamboyant mind. At some point, these two disparate personalities forge a bond, and the men fall for each other. The play, which runs until November 16 and contains full nudity. Please be advised that this show is intended for an adult-only audience. At this point there are 16 countries that recognize same sex marriages (and you may soon be able to add two more to that list, England and Wales), allowing you to choose from locales that run the gamut from the familiar to the exotic for your ceremony and, of course, the reception. What, you were going to travel half-way around the world and not have a party?

can’t believe that it’s November already! Time seems to race by at a reckless and shocking pace, especially during these stressful times. Fretting about your job, agonizing over this crappy economy, not getting enough sleep, poor nutritional habits, etc. are just a few of the factors that can age you, lickity split. You can use botox, collagen and a top notch plastic surgeon to fight off the ravages of Father Time, but you may just go broke in the process. Result: more damn stress! This week let’s take a look at some inexpensive techniques that will help you to look and feel younger from the inside out. Remember when your mother told you to stop scowling or your face would freeze that way? Well, she had a point. Every time you cop a facial expression, tiny creases form underneath the surface of your skin; the more you do the expression, the deeper the creases. As you age and your skin loses moisture and elasticity, these lines turn into permanent deep grooves. Hint: so that you won’t end up looking like one of the apple trees in the Wizard of Oz, try to keep your eyes, eyebrows and forehead relaxed. Also, try sleeping on your back and avoid sleeping on your side with your face scrunched up in the pillow. Yes, more time on your back will keep you looking younger! And don’t forget the importance of moisturizing your skin at night and in the morning before you go to work.
Yo-yo, or crash diets, are a “no-no”! While it’s tempting to starve yourself or try a new gimmick to shed fat fast, such strategies can wreak havoc with your heart, cause bagging, sagging skin, and make you fatter in the long run. Eat healthy and exercise regularly starting today! Diet wisely by losing only 1-3 pounds per week and always combine a sound nutritional plan with a program of wise, consistent exercise. Stop smoking and eating sweets. Both of these vices can cause wrinkles by speeding up the degradation of elastin and collagen, both crucial skin proteins. In addition, cigarette smoking can give you bad breath and yellow teeth. Attractive, no? Try eating more fruit instead of cupcakes and brownies. Try replacing cigarettes with more sex. Great cardio! Stress is here to stay. But when stress takes control, certain catabolic hormones, like cortisol, adrenaline and neurodrenaline, rage wildly in your body speeding up the aging process. Try deep breathing activities like Yoga and meditation, which can be done anywhere. Listen to classical music like Mozart. Masturbation is also a great stress releaser, but not recommended at your job. A great tan is sexy, but years of sun can also cause skin to become dry and wrinkled. Use a sunscreen, a minimum of SPF-15 daily and your skin will retain its moisture get the good sun it needs. For more fitness tips, contact TrainerTomB@aol.com! VALENTINO’S ITALIAN CUISINE

DINING
BY GRANT JAMES

I
t’s hard to believe, but a space that was once a Quizno’s is now a charming Italian restaurant. Tucked in-between a Tijuana Flats and a Starbucks, Valentino’s Italian Cuisine is a little hard to spot. The plaza can be overlooked as you zoom by on Federal Highway, but like all good things, people eventually caught on. As I sat down at a bar that wrapped around two chefs kneading dough, I felt like I was in a legitimate Italian pizzeria in New York. Frank Sinatra played in the background as I perused the menu, scanning over a plethora of options. The restaurant offers your classic Italian-American options: pizza, calzone/stromboli, hot and cold subs, salads and soups, and of course, entrees. I noticed a deliveryman coming and going throughout my entire meal, and I realized that Valentino’s was a staple for locals. I ordered the Chicken Marsala ($13.95) which came with a side of pasta and salad. The waitress recommended the house vinaigrette for the salad, and also a nice red wine to go with my meal. My companion ordered the Fettucini Alfredo ($11.95), and went with the same salad choice. We ordered meatballs for an appetizer after someone next to me informed us that
they were delicious. A regular no doubt. While we were waiting for our food, a man sitting across from me at the bar ordered the daily special and the waitress called him by his first name, and on the way out said “See you tomorrow!”. The regulars here were truly regulars – in some cases, daily regulars. As our dishes arrived, I realized why. The pricing and portions transported me back to a time when restaurants weren’t affected by the recession. The $14 Chicken Marsala that I ordered at Valentino’s would go for $16-17 at another restaurant, which seemed to be the case for every item on the menu. Everything was priced slightly lower than other restaurants, without compromising the portions. That’s not to say that the portions were gigantic, but they were generous. Each sauce was savory and fresh, and the pasta was a perfect al dente. For desert, we split an amazingly rich Cannoli ($3.95). The meals were delicious, and the service was great. My waitress was one of the nicest I’ve had in a while, and the chefs in front of me chatted me up while we waited for our food. With A+ service, flavorful, fresh food and a reasonable price range, it’s no wonder Valentino’s has regulars. When you go, make sure to tell them that Florida Agenda sent you.
