SUNSHINE STATE MARGATE GETS A NEW MAYOR
T
here is some debate as to whether Lesa “Le” Peerman is the first gay (or “openly gay”) mayor in the history of Broward County, Florida. But whether she is the first or not, her succession to Mayor Frank Talerico is certainly an important development in a county dominated by men in government, and a state that severely lags behind the rest of the country in gay rights legislation. Up to last week, Peerman was Vice Mayor of Margate. She was elected Mayor by the city commissioners in a unanimous vote. The commissioners also selected Commissioner Joanne Simone as the new Vice Mayor, making it the first time that both of the top two city offices have been held by women. “I think the people care more if we are good commissioners, good representatives for them,” Mayor Peerman told MargateNews.net, in addressing the issue of her sexual preference. “For me, I am proud to have been named Mayor; I am also proud to be a lesbian. So if that part of who I am can help people understand or be less afraid to be who they are then that is a bonus.”

Atlantic Beach City Commission May Create Fully-Inclusive HROs Atlantic Beach, FL – On November 25th, the Atlantic Beach City Commission took a huge step forward in creating a city ordinance prohibiting discrimination against LGBT people, reports Equality Florida. The commission came to a consensus to have city staff write language for a policy that would prohibit discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations. At Monday’s workshop, pro-equality supporters filled the room and city staff had to set up overflow areas. Ministers, teachers, doctors, children of gay parents and straight allies all told their stories about why they support a nondiscrimination policy in Atlantic Beach. Now, the city will hold a public hearing on December 9th and take their first vote on the policy. You can show your support by either showing up to the public hearing, or by e-mailing the city commissioners through a form on Equality Florida’s official site. For more information visit eqfl.org

Guests can make a difference while enjoying beautiful snapshots of the wonders that Harvey has experienced first-hand in the past year. Guest will be greeted with wine

In the release, The Pride Center states that their mission is to “provide a welcoming, safe space – an inclusive home – that celebrates, nurtures and empowers the LGBTQ communities and our friends and neighbors in South Florida.” For 20 years, The Pride Center has met the LGBTQ community’s distinct health, social, educational, socio-economic and safety needs. Last year, over 20,000 people attended activities provided by The Pride Center. For more information about The Pride Center, visit pridecenterflorida.org. AIDS Museum to Open in Wilton Manors Wilton Manors, FL – The World AIDS Museum will officially open in early 2014, and it’s going to be right here in South Florida. Broward County has the second highest number of new AIDS cases per capita in the country. The sponsors of the new museum are hoping to create a larger awareness by using the history of the disease in order to educate people, remembering iconic figures who are still living with HIV/ AIDS, and by removing stigmas. “Creating this museum was the brainchild of a support group of individuals living with HIV/AIDS,” said Steve Stagon, CEO and president of the World AIDS Museum. “Approximately six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust and, in the tragedy of September 11, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives. To date, HIV/AIDS has taken the lives of 26 million people. The museum will remind people of all those that have been lost and the work still left to be done.” The World AIDS Museum will officially open in early 2014 at 1201 NE 26th St, Suite 111, Wilton Manors, FL, 33305.
Bill Maher Calls Out Liz Cheney New York, NY – Comedian Bill Maher slammed Liz Cheney for “throwing [her] sister under the bus” on his HBO show “Real Time with Bill Maher.” “She came out against what her own sister does, she came out against gay marriage, thinking that this would win conservative votes,” said Maher, referring to Liz Cheney’s bid for the Wyoming Senate seat. Maher also said that Cheney “misjudged” the people of Wyoming. “They always accuse liberals of being the ones who don’t care about the flyover states, they don’t know what real America is like,” Maher said. “Actually, she’s the one who doesn’t know what real America is like because I’m sure there are a lot Wyoming people who find gay marriage icky, but what they found even ickier was throwing your sister under the bus to win an election.” Mary Cheney recently announced that she will not be supporting her sister’s bid in the Republican primary.

Houston Offers Benefits to Employees’ Same-Sex Spouses Houston, TX – Houston will begin offering health and life insurance to legally married same-sex spouses of municipal employees, Mary Annise Parker announced last week. Parker says it is the constitutional thing to do, according to the Houston Chronicle. “Based on the right to equal protection under the law, it is unconstitutional for the city to continue to deny benefits to the same-sex spouses of our employees who

if passed, the state could finally close the gap in the Northeast, according to the Associated Press and ABC. The case, known as Whitewood v. White, will be heard by U.S. District Judge John Jones on June 9 in Harrisburg. Though state officials have asked Jones to delay or even toss out the case, he has stayed on target with the June court date. “I’m an optimist by nature,” he said in the report. “The jurisprudence of equal protection and substantive due process has undergone what can only be characterized as a sea change since 1972,” said Jones. If passed, Pennsylvania will become the 17th state to allow gay marriage, after the recent addition of Hawaii and Illinois.

Ellis served as senior vice president of global marketing at Martini Media, is an award-winning media executive and has advocated for LGBT issues, including helping grow the women’s interest magazine Real Simple. Ellis has a partner of eight years and twins. They have been profiled by multiple publications, including The New York Times, Time, and The Huffington Post. “While our community has made great strides in recent years, our movement has an important and critical journey ahead.” Ellis said in a statement. “Together with our dedicated staff, I will push for a culture where everyone in the LGBT community is fully welcome and respected by our neighbors. I look forward to leading GLAAD and creating a world where LGBT people and our families have the freedom to joyously – and openly – live a life they love.” Ellis is set to start her new role in January.

are legally married,” Parker said. “This change is not only the legal thing to do, it is the right thing, just and fair thing to do.” Parker said she believes Texas’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage violates the U.S. Constitution. “The amendment specifically permits benefits to be provided to legal spouses of employees,” she said. “I can only assume that it was contemplated that there would never be a time when same-sex couples were in legally sanctioned relationships.”

ilton Manors, FL – 30 years after HIV first surfaced, the red ribbon remains the universal symbol of awareness and support for those living with HIV. The red ribbon was the first ever ribbon symbol, inspiring the well-known pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness. The idea for the ribbon came 22 years ago, when a group of 12 artists gathered to discuss a new project for visual aids: a New York organization that raises awareness of HIV. The photographers, painters, film makers and costume designers sat in the gallery space in East Village New York before coming up with the simple yet iconic symbol. They decided the ribbon would be worn to signify awareness and support for people living with HIV – a tradition that still stands today. Held on December 1 each year, World AIDS Day is an opportunity for people to unite across the world in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The day also aims to show support for people living with the disease and to remember those who have died. According to the day’s official site, World AIDS Day was “the first ever global health day,” with the first day taking place in 1988. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system. It is passed on through infected bodily fluids, most commonly via unprotected sex or sharing needles. According to a 2012
study from the Center for Disease Control, 50,000 people are infected with the disease each year. The same study shows that 1 out of 4 of those infected are between the ages of 13 to 24. In 2010, roughly 12,000 youth were infected with HIV. 56% of gay and bisexual males in high school were unsafe the last time they had sex. 1 in 5 people living with the disease are unaware of their infection. It’s especially important to raise awareness in South Florida, as Broward County has the second highest number of new AIDS cases per capita in the country. The theme for the 2013 World AIDS Day is “Shared Responsibility: Strengthening Results for an AIDS-Free Generation.” The “shared responsibility” theme is an especially bold statement, reminding the community that just because an individual doesn’t carry the disease his or herself, doesn’t mean that he or she cannot support the cause. This World AIDS Day, the organization HIVaware is calling on the nation to “Fact Up” about living with HIV in the 21st century. The site, hivaware. org.uk, provides a plethora of information that is helpful for both teens and adults. HIVaware debunks myths about the disease, educates, and even gives ideas for fundraising. They also supply a factsheet that gives five crucial facts about the disease that “everyone should know.” One fundraiser in particular is drawing attention from locals: Cheech & Chong’s first joint performance in 25 years. The event will benefit the Broward House, an organization that has been providing health care for the HIV/AIDS community for over 25 years. The comedy duo is set to take the stage at Hard Rock Live on December 15 at 7 p.m. Visit browardhouse.org for more information on the organization. After digesting the offerings of Thanksgiving dinner, start your long weekend with Miami’s classic White Party, which continues until Sunday. Tonight’s party, White Journey, takes place at the new Score location on Washington Ave, but that’s just the start of this, one of the most famous gay weekends of the year. Beach parties, pool parties, and more dance parties continue during the weekend with an array of DJs, including DJ Hottie Scotty, DJ Affect, DJ Offer Nissim, DJ Joe Gauthreaux, DJ Abel, and more. Don’t forget to tone up at the gym beforehand before slipping into your most scandalous ensemble. For more information visit whiteparty.org
Inflated ego and narcissistic tendencies aside, Kanye West has emerged as one of the premiere controversial artists of the last decade. His albums Late Registration and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy received multiple Grammys and critical kudos. Even better, Kanye West was a proponent of homosexual tolerance in the hip-hop community long before Macklemore. Even if he sometimes steals the spotlight from gentle, heartbroken country ingénues, his music is never anything less than brilliant. Kendrick Lamar opens up for him. 8 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.
With Thanksgiving dead and gone, Christmas takes center stage. The Trans-Siberian Orchestra has made a name for themselves by crafting orchestral versions of Christmas carols in a theatrical rock-opera style. The 60-piece group combines elements of both classical orchestra and a hardrock band. Traditional Christmas music adapted contemporarily will be complemented by a host of original compositions. The New York City-based orchestra has been releasing albums since 1996, including Christmas Eve & Other Stories, The Christmas Attic, and Beethoven’s Last Night. Here, they’ll play the entirety of their multi-platinum CD The Lost Christmas Eve. 4 p.m. BB&T Center. 1 Panther Pkwy, Sunrise, 33323.

We’ve all been through it before: lying in bed with an unrequited love, hoping the emotions we feel are possibly reciprocated, staring in desperation at their listless eyes. Bonnie Rait put the emotion behind that moment into crystal clear language in her heartbreaking classic “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. The public’s love for her, though, actually took quite a long time—she didn’t break through commercially until after 10 albums and 20 years, with the smash record Nick of Time in 1989. affects countless people each and every year. Whether you or a spouse/ friend/family member contracted the disease is irrelevant. The disease, like any other life-threatening disease, affects everyone. It might be your name on that piece of paper, but everyone around you will be affected in some way. You may be judged, pitied and shunned by a number of possible sexual partners. Earlier this year, I spoke with local artist Valyn Calhoun, who battled with AIDS and other health complications last year. His experience in dealing with the stigmas of the disease were less than stellar, to say the least. “Unfortunately, the majority of harsh criticism I receive about my status is from the gay community,” Calhoun said in the

AIDS
interview. “Men seem to think I’m either untouchable or a free-for-all.” Like any disease, people are afraid of physical contact once you’ve contracted it. The cover image used in this week’s issue is from a local photographer named Larry Singer. When Singer showed me some of the photos from his upcoming book, X-Rated Dolls, I was strangely drawn to them. The images feature straight, gay, and lesbian sexual encounters, but instead of porn stars, he uses dolls. What you take away from the image is subjec-
tive. Some say the dolls look calm inside of the condom, knowing they are safe. Others have mentioned that it looks as if they are being smothered beneath the rubber. The same can be said of real sex. The condom provides you with a high protection rate against HIV/AIDS and other STDs, but you sacrifice the skin-onskin contact that we all desire. For me, I feel safe behind the condom. I do not feel trapped, oppressed or smothered. If anything, I feel more free with that thin piece of rubber. If you are HIV positive, you should feel free behind that condom as well. You should not be ashamed of your status. Prevention is the ultimate tool for ridding the world of HIV/AIDS. Safe sex shouldn’t be an afterthought, it should be the first thought.

enjoyed the Debbie Wasserman Schultz article in Issue 205. The story reminded me of the time my sister told me about my five year old nephew, Mathew. Mathew has never known me, his uncle Jay, without also knowing his uncle Jay’s ‘best friend’ Ron. One day, Mathew asked his mother, my sister Karen, “Is Ron a member of our family?” Mathew was trying to understand how his uncle’s friend Ron fit into the family. Mathew, apparently, knew Ron was a ‘special’ friend to his Uncle Jay. Ron always attended family gatherings, but at
five years old, this was in 1987, Mathew was confused about his uncle’s relationship with this other man. Karen simply answered her son, “Yes, Ron is a member of our family.” Ron and I visited my sister’s family in 1992. We spent a week together. We all had a wonderful time. Mathew, now 10 years old, with a 6 year old brother Jason accepted Ron and I without blinking an eye. I am the oldest sibling, with four sisters and two brothers. Every member of my family, from my grandparents to my youngest nephew and niece, accept Ron and I as members of the family. Also, Ron has a niece he is very close to, Elena. We met Elena’s fiance, Danny, in the 1989. Ron was the best man at Elena and Danny’s wedding, actually giving

Q: I’ve started a fitness program and now I’m trying to improve my diet and eat clean. What tips do you have? A: By now you are probably aware that the term, eat clean, has nothing to do with washing your food and has everything to do with eating in a way that promotes fat loss. While it may sound simple enough, it’s pretty challenging to stick with a clean eating plan. If it were easy then everyone would be lean, fit and confident about their body. So what’s the secret to long-term, clean eating success? Here are 4 tips: SECRET #1: Keep It Balanced So many fat loss strategies out there encourage eating only from one category of food: soup, grapefruit, salad, chicken breast. While these foods may promote fat loss and reduce overall calorie intake, this way of eating sets you up for a fall. No one sticks with highly restrictive, one-food-only
diets for very long, and you’re no exception. To make your clean eating plan last, keep your diet balanced with a range of healthy, real foods. Make a conscious effort to eliminate processed foods. SECRET #2: Don’t Put a Label On It How many times have you uttered the words I’m on a diet? Ugh, just saying that puts one in the mood to cheat on said diet. If eating clean means you’re on a diet, then you’re not committed enough to make this a way of life. True fat loss success comes when clean eating is second nature, and not a temporarily imposed sentence. SECRET #3: Have Patience Wouldn’t it be great if a week of clean eating could erase a decade worth of indulgences? But, unfortunately, you didn’t gain that fat in a week, and you won’t lose it in a week either. Look for, and acknowledge, each and every small victory along the way
to your long-term goal. Notice each pound, each inch and each pant size. These accomplishments build on one another until you reach your ultimate goal. Just remember that big changes take consistent, long-term effort. Be patient. SECRET #4: Have a Plan This is the most important step in your clean eating quest. Without it you’ll flounder around without direction and will likely find yourself starting into the bottom of a bowl of ice cream. Take a few minutes to write down out your do’s and don’t’s for your clean eating plan together with an exercise plan. Consider using a personal trainer or take yoga or some other type of fitness class. Email me if you’d like a list of foods that go along with an “Eat Clean” way of life. CROQUE-MONSIEUR
/floridaagenda
RECIPE BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY
/floridaagenda floridaagenda.com
A
croque-monsieur is a hot ham and cheese grilled sandwich. It originated in France as a fast-food snack served in cafés and bars. The cheese is typically emmental or gruyere and it’s coated in a Mornay or Béchamel sauce. The name is based on the verb croquer (“to crunch or bite”) and the word monsieur (“mister”)—the reason behind the combination of the two words is unknown—and it is commonly shortened to croque. While the origins of the croque-monsieur are unknown, there are many speculations on how it was first created.
• 2 tablespoons butter • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour • 1 cup whole milk • Pinch of ground nutmeg • 4 slices firm white sandwich bread • 4 ounces thinly sliced ham • 4 slices of Gruyère cheese • 1 tablespoon melted butter • 1/4 cup grated Gruyère cheese
with remaining bread. Heat a heavy frying pan over a low heat. Brush sandwiches with melted butter. Add to the pan and cook until deep golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Transfer to small baking sheet. Spoon on the rest of the sauce, and then the grated cheese over sandwiches. Broil until cheese begins to brown, about 2 minutes. Yummy.
Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

Melt 2 tablespoons butter in small saucepan over medium heat. Add flour and stir 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk. Add nutmeg. Increase heat to medium-high and boil until sauce thickens, whisking constantly, about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Congrats… You have just made a Béchamel sauce. Preheat broiler. Place 2 bread slices on work surface. Top each with half of ham a spoonful of sauce and a slice of Gruyère. Top

do better than Mall of America in Minneapolis, host to more than 520 stores. During the holiday season, ten-foot wreaths are hung throughout the mall and giant red ornament bulbs, weighing 300 pounds each, hang from the ceiling. Head to the mall’s rotunda to see a pair of beautifully (if not tastefully) decorated Christmas trees standing more than four stories tall. Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, known as “Christmas City, USA”, was founded on Christmas Eve in 1741. An electric star shines over the charming downtown area where you’ll find a German inspired Christkindlmarkt. The market is set up every Thursday through Sunday from the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas and 150 artisans sell their handicrafts, Christmas decorations and food. As we know, lack of snow doesn’t mean lack of holiday spirit. The palm trees in the funky seaside town of Santa Cruz, California, are all decked out in lights.
On weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive by train to the Santa Cruz boardwalk, inviting visitors to hop aboard. The ride takes visitors along the beach, through Cowell Redwoods State Park, across a 1909 steel truss bridge, and through a tunnel. All the while Santa and Mrs. Claus make their way from car to car visiting with passengers. In Washington, DC, The Pathway of Peace, the walkway leading up to the National Christmas Tree at the White House is illuminated every day from dusk until 11 p.m. One giant blue spruce is surrounded by 56 smaller trees (representing the 50 states, five territories, and District of Columbia) planted in the Ellipse, located just south of the White House. Wheeling, West Virginia’s Oglebay’s Winter Festival of Lights, set in the hills above the Woodsdale neighborhood, is a six-mile drive decked out in one of the largest Christmas light
displays in the country. Drive through a twinkling snowflake tunnel, ogle at the six-story tall poinsettia wreath and then head over the “Fantasy in Lights” Christmas parade, and an ongoing Christmas party at the Kruger Street Toy and Train Museum. To get a taste of how the 1% celebrated Christmas back in the day, check out Christmas at The Biltmore, The estate is decorated with dozens of Christmas trees, miles of garland, countless strands of white lights, and thousands of ornaments. A choir performs in the glassed Winter Garden, dancers dressed in vintage attire glide through the ballroom. By day or night, Christmas at Biltmore is sure to get you in the holiday spirit. Christmas New Orleans Style is a month-long celebration. The streetcars are festively decked out and holiday decorations abound. Take a tour of antebellum homes decorated for the holidays, listen to the sounds of riverboat caroling cruises.
