ART BASEL CONTINUES TO GROW IN STATUS AFTER LAST WEEK’S FAIR
P
romoters of Art Basel tout the fair as “the world’s premier Modern and contemporary art shows.” The visual arts showcase is held annually in Basel, Hong Kong and Miami Beach. Last week, over 250 galleries took part in Art Basel Miami Beach, boasting well over 50,000 attendees.
South Florida Teens Want Marriage Equality
Tallahassee, FL – In an e-mail from Equality Florida, CEO Nadine Smith recapped all that has changed in the past year for the Sunshine State. Smith went on to state that we are “the front line,” and that changes in the south’s stance on marriage

Pensacola Meets for Second Hearing on Domestic Partnership Registry Pensacola, FL – This week, Pensacola City Council will hold its second hearing on the creation of a domestic partnership registry that would provide essential legal protections for unmarried couples, reports Equality Florida. The meeting will take place on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Pensacola City Council Chambers. If you can’t make the event, you can send e-mail to the council members that will be addressing this issue through a link on Equality Florida’s blog. The event invite urges anyone that shows up to wear red, and to invite friends. “Three weeks ago, the city council voted 7-1 to move forward on a domestic partnership registry,” the event summary reads.

Fort Lauderdale, FL – In a recent article from the Sun Sentinel, teens from Atlantic High speak out against Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage. According to the article, many teens support gay marriage, regardless of their state’s stance. “I’m okay with gay marriage,” said Rose Ferron, a junior at Atlantic High. Ferron went on to say that she would rather boycott Hollywood marriages that don’t last. “I think there is nothing wrong with gay marriage, but what I think offends people is calling it marriage,” says an Atlantic High sophomore named Victor Santos. “I think people believe marriage is between a man and a woman. I think two people of the same sex should be called something else.” Jessica Kane, another Atlantic sophomore, says that there is no difference between traditional or same-sex couples. “All humans are equal,” Kane said. “There is no difference between the fight for gay marriage and the fight years ago for multiracial marriage. You can’t
control who you love.” The shift in marriage equality over the past year has likely appealed to Florida’s youth. If same-sex marriage is added to the ballot, students could be the ones making the votes that count.
Equality Florida: ‘Florida is the Front Line for Equality’
equality should start with Florida. The most positive statistic is that in Florida, support for marriage equality reached “a high of 54%.” The election of two gay state representatives is also helping to shape things in Tallahassee. “In 2014, we’ll have to raise more funds and sign more pro-equality supporters than ever before,” Smith wrote in the e-mail. “To win Florida, we have to fight in every city, every county, every neighborhood and in our State Capitol.” In 2013, Equality Florida launched their “Get Engaged” project, which reaches out to the public, asking for couples to share their stories of “love, family and support.” At the end of the e-mail, Smith asks “every Floridian who cares about equality to lean in and get engaged in this fight,” prompting a new slogan in closing – “Lean In, Nadine Smith.” The organization is asking for year-end donations at this time. “It was an incredible experience to see our council members make such an important decision with near unanimity. But, we can’t get too excited yet. The city council must vote a second time in order for the registry to be a reality in Pensacola.” The registry is a legal tool which provides access to family protections such as hospital visitation, emergency services, and funeral arrangements. enver, CO – After appearing in court to defend his cake refusal, Jack Phillips was found guilty of unlawful discrimination. Back in July, Phillips refused to bake a cake for a gay couple (Charlie Craig and Greg Mullins), and soon after, they sought legal assistance. Now, months later, Phillips is facing consequences. Judge Robert Spencer found Phillips guilty after he learned that Phillips – owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop – previously baked a wedding cake for two dogs. “Being denied service by Masterpiece Cakeshop was offensive and dehumanizing, especially in the midst of arranging what should be a joyful family

Pennsauken, NJ – High school teacher Michael Griffin was fired from Holy Ghost Preparatory School in Bensalem, Pennsylvania after he applied for a marriage license in New Jersey, reports NBC Philadelphia. The school’s headmaster, Fr. James McCloskey, told Griffin that his marriage “contradicts the terms of his teaching contract” before letting the 12-yearteaching veteran go on Friday. Griffin says that he has been with his partner for 12 years as well, and that the school has been accepting and tolerant of them until now. “I’ve been with my partner for more than 12 years, the entire time I’ve been teaching at the school,” said Griffin. “He’s been to numerous school functions with me, he’s even been to McCloskey’s house.” “At a meeting in my office yesterday, teacher Michael Griffin made clear that he obtained a license to marry his same sex partner,” McCloskey wrote in a statement. “Unfortunately, this decision contradicts the terms of his teaching contract at our school, which requires all faculty and staff to follow the teachings of the Church as a condition of their employment.” Griffin is currently looking for another teaching job.

I believe the Bible teaches [same-sex marriage is] not an okay thing.” Phillips’ lawyer said that if her client lost the case in civil court, she would appeal the ruling. System for Blood Donors Same-Sex Marriage Washington, D.C. – On Thursday, a federal advisory panel on blood-donor Compared to Junk Food? policies voted to ask the government for a new surveillance system that would possibly allow gay and bisexual men to donate blood in the future, reports the Washington Times. However, the panel did not lift the current lifetime ban on blood donors that are male and have had sex with other men in the past (MSM). The system would have to be in place “prior to the implementation of any change in this [MSM] deferral policy,” said the HHS Advisory Committee on Blood and Tissue Safety and Availability. Currently, health officials use an extensive screening process that asks donors a series of questions that touch on health conditions, foreign travel, tattoos, and previous/current sexual activities. The lifetime ban on MSM donors was implemented in 1985, after blood recipients were contracting HIV/AIDS from the blood they were receiving through blood transfusions. At Thursday’s session, HHS panelists tried to discuss how to advance changes in the MSM policy, but were
Springfield, IL – The Illinois Family Institute, an anti-LGBT nonprofit organization, has posted their newest effort to tackle the rise of same-sex marriage, reports Good As You. The bizarre ad markets same-sex marriage as “emergency energy for a desperate politician.” The nutrition facts label has been renamed “social cost facts,” and the ingredients consist of a confusing slew of phrases, including: “concentrated liberal left syrup, breakdown of family (no-fault divorce, abortion, sexual immortality), enriched corporate funds, unnatural biology,” and a very ambiguous “free love color #1.” Last month, Illinois Gov Pat Quinn signed marriage equality into law, making it the 16th state to do so. Earlier in November, the Illinois Family Institute’s Laurie Higgins wrote a blog post titled “Random Thoughts on Tragic Marriage Vote.” In the post, she said that Illinois lawmakers who voted in favor of the bill were “cowardly and/or ignorant” and that they voted “in defiance of truth, history logic, compassion, and in some cases, their own religious traditions.”

I
hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season. Because of you, our loyal readers, viewers and advertisers, we have had the most successful year in our history! When we decided at the end of last year to become your premier South Florida publication and focus specifically on Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park for our pin point circulation, local content, neighborhood business features, your response was amazing. Our advertisers realized what a niche-marketing giant we really are with our ability to reach local consumers. Our valued advertisers realized they do not need to pay a premium in other publications to reach a market that will rarely, if ever, patronize their businesses. We recognized on behalf of our advertisers that over 90 percent of their business is derived from this 20-mile reach with our circulation and dynamic local content. Even most tourists stay within 20 miles of Wilton Drive. Likewise, we also realized our local readers and viewers love having a pure local reading and viewing experience every week plus 24/7 access to our two online platforms—www.guymag.net and www.foridaagenda.com. For the past 18 months, we have been investing passionately to create the firstof-its-kind ONLINE SOCIAL MEDIA MAGAZINE for readers and viewers to interact in real time with our advertisers and each other. I am thrilled to announce at our Holiday Party, December 12th at 6:30 PM at Dapur Restaurant, I will be launching and showcasing this amazing and innovative first-to-market online experience. We have created a platform where our advertisers social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, etc are connected to their GUYMAG.NET social media response pages in real time. Every comment, picture and video about local businesses is immediately populated to their GUYMAG.NET social media response page. This results in the first-ever current, online business marketing pages for our advertisers and for our readers and viewers to have up-to-the-second information on special offers, exciting events and everything else our advertisers want known about their clubs, bars and businesses. Consumers can upload pictures and videos to their favorite businesses social media response pages and enroll to receive special offers on their mobile phone in real time, redeemable on-the-spot. All readers and viewers will be able to watch a dynamic 60-second video on each business, and write real time reviews and comments on their own experience with the establishments. Additionally, consumers will be able to map each business through our Google mapping experience, so finding a location has never been easier. Currently we have tens of thousands of unique monthly visitors and this audience is growing every day. In my seven years of publishing LGBT content, never have I been more thrilled and excited, and quite honestly proud, to announce that we have created a way to keep our print publications innovative and on the cutting edge for years to come. Every one of our advertisers will have the opportunity to have their print advertisement GO LIVE on our GUYMAG.NET Mobile Application. Here’s how it works. You simply download our mobile application “Engage Mobility.” By scanning the logo of the advertisement you are reading, you activate a business video of the establishment showcasing everything relevant about the business. This also works on our clients’ business cards, brochures, post cards, menus, etc, etc. This is amazing and game-changing for our company and for our loyal print readers who now have the ability to experience a business and make a buying decision with a GUY MAGAZINE or FLORIDA AGENDA newspaper print advertisement like never before. This is a monumental opportunity for our print advertisers to have the ability to communicate a message in the most powerful and proven way--VIDEO. Being first to market with America’s first LGBT ONLINE SOCIAL MEDIA MAGAZINE experience is exciting for those of us at Multimedia Platforms. Our readers, viewers and advertisers will be unique in their ability to enjoy and benefit from this new and exciting experience. The world is ever changing, and in order to serve you best, we must continue to invest and change with it. Only then can we work to earn your continued loyal support. Businesses can subscribe to our monthly Online Social Media Online Magazine platform beginning January 1, 2014. It’s an exciting time to be leading the massive LGBT marketing push. I wish everyone a safe and rewarding holiday season. Your incredible support over the years has been truly inspiring to me. It is because of you, we are where we are today and have the platform to provide you the best LGBT Multimedia experience anywhere. THANK YOU!

Now, it appears as if there are hidden costs in the new health plans, as recently reported by The Wall Street Journal. “Under the law, patients can’t be denied coverage due to existing conditions or charged higher rates than healthier peers,” said WSJ’s Melinda Beck. “The law also sets an annual out-of-pocket maximum of up to $6,350 for individuals and
sake of privacy, received a call from an AIDS Insurance Continuation Program (AICP) coordinator at Broward House with some confusing and terrifying news. In the call, the coordinator told his client that he had just been issued a memo from Tallahassee stating that anyone participating in AICP that goes into the ACA would be dropped from the AICP. The AICP is a Department of Health program for Floridians who have been diagnosed with HIV/ AIDS and need help paying for their health insurance premiums. In the client’s story, he told us he pays over $1,000 a month for his private insurance premium, of which the AICP pays up to $750 of. In addition to the premium, the patient is still expected to pay for co-pays and prescriptions, making it very difficult for those without much of an income. “My understanding is that I could shop outside the [ACA] exchange for a new insurance plan, but could not participate in any of the subsidies offered by the Federal Exchange,” he wrote in his e-mail. The ACA was created to stop people from paying exorbitant fees on private health insurance, and to get them on a national health plan through the
$12,700 for families, after which insurers pay the full tab.” Beck created a mocked up chart that estimate what some insurers would ask a 35-year-old patient to pay for expensive drugs in various counties. Among them, was Atripla for HIV, in MiamiDade County. In the chart, the retail cost for Atripla is $2,200, with an out-of-pocket cost that goes up to $1,100 in certain situations for two of Florida’s biggest health care providers: Cigna and Humana. Finding information for each health plan is perhaps the most difficult part of the process. Even on HealthCare.gov, some plans ask prospective clients to actually apply before they can see what all the details are. Though everything appears to be up in the air, the Florida Department of Health is expected to give a statement sometime this week providing additional information for patients looking to make the move to ACA next year. All of this is of course assuming that the ACA doesn’t get repealed next year, which many (including a recent article from Forbes) are now pointing to.

Dave Chappelle The reclusive Dave Chappelle makes a special appearance in South Florida at the historic Fillmore Miami Beach. Audience members have complained about his erratic live performances, including last year when he walked out during a heckler (though Dave Chappelle is known for walking out on very elusive contracts, including a reported $55 million for the third season of The Chappelle’s Show). Either way, if all goes well, Chappelle is famed for his raunchy, satirical humor. Stand-up is his first love, having stated previously that he left his lucrative television show because he missed stand-up. 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The Filmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

ASK THE FITNESS MAN BY PETER JACKSON, CPT
SPOTLIGHT EXERCISE: SWISS-BALL PREACHER CURL
HOW TO SURVIVE THE HOLIDAYS Q: I find it just about impossible not to pig out at this time of year with so many parties and delicious temptations on every platter. Any advice? A: Regrettably, most people lose sight of their fitness and fat loss goals entirely this month, only to have a rude awakening when their clothes are snug come January. Try these tips to avoid overindulging: STEP #1: RE-FOCUS: The focus in so many of our holiday traditions is on food. This season try to re-focus your attention away from food and back on what’s really important — friends, family, giving and religious traditions. Stay focused on the reason for the season rather than the plate full of hors d’oeuvres in front of you. Don’t lose sight of your dieting goals. Remind yourself of all the progress that you’ve made.

Push Fitness member Ray Chenoweth demonstrates the Swiss-ball Preacher Curl. Photo: TobysPhotos.com
1) Grab an EZ Curl Bar, kneel over a Swiss ball and rest your upper on it (as shown). Hold the bar with a narrow underhand grip, your elbows bent about 5 degrees. Your back should be naturally arched. 2) Without moving your upper arms off the ball, curl the weight toward your shoulders. Repeat. Do three sets of 10 to 15. Keep your goals in the forefront of your mind. Be aware that the holidays can be a time of emotional eating. Sometimes
stress, family conflict, or even depression can be triggered. If this happens to you, try to address the root of your problems with solutions other than food or drink. STEP #2: USE STRATEGY: The most obvious and effective strategy is not to arrive at the party hungry. Instead, eat a small low-calorie snack ahead of time to prevent overeating. When it’s time for extreme measures, wear tight-fitting clothes around your waist so there’s not much room for expansion! Chew gum before and after a meal, so you won’t be tempted to overindulge in appetizers and desserts. During the party, don’t stand right next to the food table; keep a safe distance. And before you get a plate of food, choose your selections wisely. Use a small plate instead of a large dinner plate and don’t go back for seconds! Another important strategy is figuring out how to maintain your exercise regimen between parties. Finding room in your busy holiday schedule for exercise will help you fight off the extra weight trying to attach itself to your midsection and rear. STEP #3: MODERATION, MODERATION, MODERATION: I’m not suggesting that you deprive yourself of all the foods you love, as this will likely lead to a spurge that ruins all your good
intentions. Be smart about what you choose to eat. Enjoy the goodness of the season, but in moderation. Trim calories where you can by limiting your trimmings such as cheeses, gravy, sauces and creams. Some of your favorite indulgences may only come around this time of year. This may tempt you to overindulge. Instead of stuffing yourself, survey what foods are available and make your choices. Indulge in your favorites and leave the everyday dishes for another time. Only eat what you love, and don’t just eat something because it’s on the buffet. Also, be sure to limit the amount of alcoholic beverages you drink. While you may not know it, they’re filled with calories, too. Try alternating an alcoholic drink with a glass of water or sparkling water with lemon. Resolve now to make 2014 the year you finally lose the belly or extra pounds and achieve your optimum fitness. Make plans now to hire a professional trainer, join a group fitness or yoga class. Follow these simple tips, and you will avoid holiday weight gain this season and start 2014 off right! IRISH COFFEE

RECIPE

C
aife Gaelach (in Irish) is a cocktail consisting of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, and sugar, stirred, and topped with thick cream. The coffee is drunk through the cream. The original recipe explicitly uses cream that has not been whipped, although whipped cream is often used because it’s easier to get it floating on top! Irish coffee may be considered a variation on the hot toddy, which is Irish whiskey, hot water, and a thick slice of lemon spiked with cloves. (My mother gave me that as a child when I had the flu…no wonder I’m an alco lol ! “splenda”. Thick cream is carefully poured over the back of a spoon initially held just above the surface of the coffee and gradually raised a little. The layer of cream will float on the coffee without mixing. The coffee is drunk through the layer of cream, You DO NOT use a straw to drink Irish coffee!
Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

• 1 1/2 oz Irish whiskey • 1 tsp brown sugar (that’s the original recipe, you can use regular sugar, but no sugar substitutes as the sugar is what makes the cream float.) • 6 oz hot coffee (boiling water and instant coffee is often used in Irish Pubs) • Heavy cream (whipped or not...you are the chef)
The glass will be either a stem or a mug. Hot black coffee is poured into the glass. Whiskey and at least one level teaspoon of sugar (use 2 if you like your coffee sweeter) is stirred in until fully dissolved. The sugar is essential for floating liquid cream on top so don’t use any fake stuff such as
