SUPREME COURT STOPS GAY MARRIAGES IN UTAH

ruling, complete with anti-gay riots. In a statement made following Monday’s ruling, the Human Rights Campaign stayed positive, focusing instead on how far the country has come in terms of tolerance and acceptance. “Utahns and other Americans have witnessed the joy that marriage has brought to hundreds of loving and committed couples over the past weeks,” said Chad Griffin, president of HRC. “While it is disappointing that the dreams of many more will be put on hold, we know that in the end justice will be served and no couple will be excluded from this cherished institution.” Though LGBT groups are still reeling from the ruling, the state’s attorney general and governor both praised the stay. “The Supreme Court made the correct decision to stay Judge Shelby’s ruling in the Amendment 3 case,” said Gov. Herbert in a statement made Monday. “Clearly, the stay should have been granted with the original District Court decision in order to have avoided the uncertainty created by this unprecedented change. As I have said all along, all Utahns deserve to have this issue resolved through a fair and complete judicial process. I firmly believe this is a state-rights issue and I will work to defend the position of the people of Utah and our State Constitution.” Though the stay is now in effect in Utah, it’s suspected that advocates are preparing to rally. ashington, D.C. – Though nearly 1,000 couples have already married in Utah, the Supreme Court has stepped in to prevent any further couples from doing so. Last month, a federal district judge found Utah’s ban on same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional. The judge and the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals both refused to give a stay, which would have stopped couples from marrying before they could even have the chance to. Following the refusal, Utah’s attorney general and governor appealed to the Supreme Court, saying that a stay was needed until they could reach the nine justices to possibly overturn the ruling. Same-sex couples in Utah must immediately stop and wait for a ruling on the pending appeal from the 10th Circuit, whose filings are due at the end of February. Then the case may have a chance to head to the Supreme Court. SCOTUSblog (the Supreme Court’s blog) gave the following message Monday afternoon: “The order appeared to have the support of the full Court, since there were no noted dissent. The ruling can be interpreted as an indication that the Court wants to have further exploration in lower courts of the basic constitutional question of state power to limit marriage to a man and a woman. Had it refused the state’s request for delay, that would have left at least the impression that the Court was comfortable allowing same-sex marriages to go forward in the thirtythree states where they are still not permitted by state law.” The state, which is widely known for its relation to Mormons, has been up in arms ever since the court’s

Hate Crimes on the Rise in Florida?

the county sheriff’s offices, city police departments, and college campus police departments.

Tallahassee, FL – According to a recentlyreleased report from the Florida Attorney General, hate crimes in Florida increased by 22.3% in 2012. Over half of the 170 crimes were due to race, with antigay attacks coming into a close second (28.8% of the crimes). One of the tables in the report lists how many hate crimes are reported each year, dating back to 2002, which had a total of 306. Aside from a seemingly random spike in 2004, hate crimes have been on the decline since 2002. In 2011, the number was down to 139. Now, the following year’s report shows the jump of 170 crimes in 2012 – the biggest jump since 2002. The other factors in the reported hate crimes are religion and mental disability. Charlie Crist Regrets Backing Gay Marriage Ban

January 8, 2014 H 8

KEVIN MILLER

Orlando, FL – In an exclusive interview with Watermark Online, Charlie Crist apologized for backing an amendment to ban gay marriage in 2008. “I’m sorry I did that,” Crist told the Orlando-based LGBT publication. “It was a mistake. I was wrong. Please forgive me.” But when publisher Tom Dyer continued to put pressure on the incident, Crist folded and continuously apologized. When speaking of traditional families, Crist interjected “Tom... I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” Dyer accepted the apology and continued to make a point that when looking back at Crist’s shifts

in opinion, it’s a cause for concern. “The examples you cited were exampled of me trying to be a good Republican,” explained Crist. “I couldn’t do it anymore, and I’m sorry I did. I made a mistake. I’m not perfect... please don’t hold me to that standard. And I’m sincerely sorry. I understand when it’s necessary to say I was wrong. That’s the journey I’m on... and I’m still on it.” Crist went on to discuss how his parents raised him to love everyone and to be nice to everyone as long as you can. He told Dyer that telling women what to do with their bodies or telling others who they can marry isn’t for him, the government, or anyone other than “their” god to decide. When Dyer mentioned that LGBT issues are nowhere to be found on Crist’s official campaign site, the candidate was quick to say that it will be changed soon.

Anti-Gay Activist Compares Trans People to Satan

Washington, D.C. – Liz Cheney has dropped out of her U.S. Senate primary race, citing “serious health issues” as the lead cause. The daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney (and sister of openly-gay activist Mary) announced her plans to put the kibosh on her campaign for Senator of Wyoming in a written statement reports The New York Times. According to the Times, Cheney’s name may have caused some of the backlash she had been receiving in Wyoming, not to mention the recent anti-gay spat with her sister Mary. “Name recognition and dynasties – that just doesn’t fly in Wyoming,” Gov. Matt Mead told the Times. “I know firsthand it doesn’t work.” Mead’s mother, Mary Hansen Mead, daughter of Republican governor Clifford P. Hansen, ran for governor in 1990 and lost to a popular Democrat. Cheney had a hard time staying out of the spotlight, and not in a good way. Cheney was recently vocal about her opposition to same-sex marriage, and when her mother confronted former Sen. Al Simpson, telling him to “shut up,” it didn’t exactly gain Liz any additional support.

in anti-gay policies was too much to stand. “Heres a hypothetical: what if you know a certain GOP congressman, let’s just say from Illinois, is gay... and you know this because one of your friends, a journalist for a reputable network, told you in no uncertain terms that he caught that GOP congressman and his male roommate in the shower... together. Now they could have been good friends just trying to conserve water. But there’s more. What if this congressman has also been caught by TMZ cameras trolling gay bars. Now what if you know that this very same guy, the darling of the GOP, has also voted against repeal of ‘don’t ask don’t tell,’ opposed the repeal of DOMA, is against gay marriage; and for the federal marriage amendment, which would add language to the US Constitution bannging gay marriage and would likely strike down every gay rights law and ordinance in the country?” While Hod never named Schock specifically, he ends the post with a link to an article titled “The 7 gayest Aaron Schock Instagram posts of 2013,” along with text that reads “not sure why... but had a sudden urge to share this.”

Milwaukee, WI – Peter LaBarbera, head of the anti-LGBT organization Truth About Homosexuality, took the opportunity to rant about transgender people, Robin Roberts, and President Obama on a Christian radio show on Thursday. LaBarbera told VCY America’s Crosstalk to that transgender people are the work of Satan and then later accused President Obama of “celebrating homosexuality.” When interviewer Vic Eliason asked LaBarbera to weigh in on the recent coming-out of Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts, LaBarbera said that “Every coming-out is a tragedy.” “Transgender advocates are people who believe that their biological sex, male or female, doesn’t match what they feel,” LaBarbera said, returning to the topic of transgendered individuals. “I’ll tell you what, Vic, Satan really works through feelings, doesn’t he? Life is not what you feel. If every married couple acted on their given feelings day-to-day, we would have a lot more divorces in this culture, wouldn’t we? Feelings do not determine truth.”

Christ to a generation that is changing? ome – Pope Francis continues to surprise critics with additional support of the LGBT community. Pope Francis has told the church to reconsider their approach when dealing with children that come from “nontraditional” relationships. “Gay unions raise challenges for us today which for us are sometimes difficult to understand,” said Pope Francis according to Agence FrancePresse, who published excerpts from the meeting between Francis and various leaders of the Catholic church. “I remember a case in which a sad little girl confessed to her teacher: ‘My mother’s girlfriend doesn’t love me,” he said. “How can we proclaim

Q&A

DAVID JOBIN: MEGAN MULLALY AND STONEWALL TEAM UP FOR A CAUSE BY GRANT JAMES

E

January 8, 2014 H 10

Gregg Shapiro: David, you recently completed your first six months as the Executive Director at the Stonewall National Museum & Archives (SNMA). How has the experience been so far? David Jobin: It’s been incredibly gratifying. I had the benefit of keeping my job in Washington DC when my partner took a job in Miami. So I traveled back-and-forth and really waited for the right opportunity. When this job opened up and I read about it, it seemed like the perfect fit for my interest in LGBT equality issues, and I had also managed nonprofits for a number of years. I am thrilled that I made the choice. I am thrilled that I landed the job. It’s one of the most sophisticated boards I have ever worked with; they’re really committed to it. I don’t know that I’ve ever worked for

SUBMITTED PHOTO

mmy-winning actress Megan Mullally, who LGBT folks fondly remember as the irreverent and irrepressible Karen Walker on the groundbreaking NBC sitcom “Will & Grace,” is on her way to South Florida to entertain you and do good for the community. Mullally, who will be performing with gay Broadway maven and entertainer Seth Rudetsky, performs on Jan. 16 at Parker Playhouse as part of a benefit for Stonewall National Museum & Archives. According to its mission statement, the 40 year old Stonewall National Museum & Archives, located at 1300 E. Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, “promotes understanding through preserving and sharing the proud culture of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their significant role in American society.” Under the guidance of newly appointed Executive Director David Jobin, who brings a wealth of experience to the position, Stonewall’s future looks bright. I spoke with Jobin about Stonewall and the upcoming benefit.

an organization where I could point to every board member and describe to you what their contribution is in terms of their level of service and their level of leadership. Normally, boards have the standouts, the executive kind of committee where you can point to them and they are carrying the weight of the organization. Here, it’s really evenly distributed. Every board member comes to the table with a passion and a set of experiences that help propel us forward. What else attracted you to this position at the Stonewall National Museum & Archives? I had worked for the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington DC. I thought that I had found my calling, because while it’s an arts organization, it’s really a social conscience and political organization. I was ready to even take one

step further and work for an organization that is committed to fighting gender inequality. That I could go to an organization that has a 40 year history of doing this, a rich history, but also we’re in a turnaround mode. What do you hope to achieve as the Executive Director at the Stonewall National Museum & Archives? I think it was a thoughtful process to put the word “national” into the Stonewall National Museum & Archives. I don’t know that we’ve accomplished that. But that’s what we’re setting out to do. I’m a big believer that the process of having a national profile is doing the best job you can do locally. We have to be in a situation where every South Floridian, when they hear Stonewall Museum, knows of what we do and has some sense of who we are. We still have the library, but were not just

How did the benefit with Megan Mullally and Seth Rudetsky come about? This came about because I’m friends with Mark Cortale, Megan’s tour manager. He is also Varla Jean Merman’s manager and I worked at a theater in Pittsburgh where we produced Varla Jean Merman and I stayed in contact with Mark. He’s put together this impressive circle of cabaret performers whose tours he manages. I called him and said we would be really interested in having Megan Mullally perform at our fundraiser. He said he was really interested but he had already started negotiations with Parker Playhouse. I asked if there was a possibility of us layering a fundraiser on top of this already scheduled event. Parker Playhouse has been amazing! Part of it is a think they really understand and appreciate the importance of Stonewall Museum. They’ve been really respectful of what we do.

Lastly, David, what are some of the other ways in which people can become involved in and can contribute to Stonewall Museum & Archives? We have been really successful in the past six months and a lot of this has to do with Ronni Dowd, who is our Director of Operations. We’ve re-energized our volunteer corps. We have three paid staff people, but we have volunteers running the day-to-day library and operations. One thing I would say is if somebody wants to get involved they should look into volunteering. Everyone should have a library card. Everyone should have a $35 membership to Stonewall. It’s really important to support the organization, but it also gives you access to the world’s largest LGBT lending library and DVDs. I hope that people consider becoming a member and I hope that they show up at the Megan Mullally concert on January 16th [laughs].

What is the Stonewall National Education Project? Last year we had a symposium in Fort Lauderdale to which we invited 14 of the most progressive school districts in the country -- San Francisco, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Minneapolis. They all came to talk about best practices for including LGBT studies and also making the classroom more welcoming for LGBT students. This year, it’s still our symposium, but we’re holding it in Los Angeles. California schools are being mandated to start addressing some of these issues. We put together a curriculum for Broward County schools based on the quality that talks about using Obama’s inauguration speech where he said “from Seneca Falls to Selma to Stonewall.” What we did was put

together a lesson plan that talked about all three of those disenfranchised communities and the similarities of the struggles.

The Week 01/09 to 01/15

THE WEEK

Real Housewives, Rosie O’Donnell and Ukuleles The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess January 9th at the Kravis Center

THURSDAY 01/09

FRIDAY 01/10

Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess

Send in the Clowns

The famous and ground-breaking “folk-opera” Porgy and Bess makes its way to South Florida, at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. George and Ira Gershwin’s classic opera focuses on the plight of Porgy, a disabled black beggar in the slums of Charleston, South Carolina. He attempts to rescue Bess from Crown, a possessive and abusive lover, and Sportin’ Life, the drug dealer (sounds like a group therapy session I heard at SunServe last weekend). Songs like “Summertime” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So” have solidified this opera into the pantheon of great American musical theater. 8 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, 33401.

Do you like to see abused elephants get cattle-prodded into submission? What about a bunch of caged tigers performing tricks while secretly building up enough resentment to one day attack (like poor Roy, and his emotionally scarred lover Siegried)? If that’s not enough excitement, how about watching a bunch of oblivious children smile without any regard for the atrocities committed in order to bring such cutesy animals into their midst? If this kind of malevolent American tradition is your cup of tea, thankfully the Ringlin Bros. and Barnum and Bailey circus is coming to town to fulfill your sadistic fantasies. Contortionists, airborne acrobatics, trapeze artists, and high-wire

acts attempt to bring a sense of humanity to the spectacle which runs through the weekend. 7 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

Housewives on Stage For some reason having to do with watching rich people behave poorly, the gay community has taken a shine to the Real Housewives franchise. Uber-gay channel Bravo! runs the series, after all. The Wicked Real Housewives of the Mob is a play sending up the hit franchise. Purportedly a mock interactive reality show in which the audience is invited to participate, the play is South Florida dinner theater at its finest. The plot revolves around a group of mobsters’ wives attending a “Welcome Home” party for Donna’s husband Rocco “The Regulator”

With so much on the line, it’ll be fun to watch him sweat. Then we can all judge judge judge how he does in this program of Barber, Britten and Schumann. 8 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, 33401.

Rosie O’Donnell Joking Around

Comediennes are a strange lot and maybe none stranger than the hysterical and irreverent Paula Poundstone. So irreverent, even, that she was once prosecuted for committing a lewd act on a 14 year old girl (although the case was dropped) and child endangerment (driving while intoxicated with her own adopted children— that case found her guilty). Either way, Poundstone has had a successful stand-up career, listed as #88 on Comedy Central’s list of the greatest stand-up comics of all time. She’s even been inducted into the Comedy Hall of Fame. Catch Poundstone and her observational humor in Delray Beach. 8 p.m. Delray Beach Center for the Arts at Old School Square. 51 N. Swinton Ave, Delray Beach, 33444.

Pressure is fun to watch, let’s all admit this to ourselves. There’s Prostitutes can do some crazy things: meth, crack, cocaine, sizzurp, nothing better than watching people have a lot on the line, deal with but are they capable of murder? In nerves, and then either achieve the courtroom drama “NUTS!” a greatness or falter short. It’s one prostitute is accused of killing one

NO MORE EXCUSES IN 2014

HEALTH

BY TOM BONANTI

Y

January 8, 2014 H 18

ou could not have made a finer New Year’s Resolution than to dedicate more time toward achieving a fitter, healthier, more beautiful body. So it’s mid-January, why are you still making excuses to put off going to the gym? Remember, besides making you look better, regular exercise can also prevent obesity, heart disease, high cholesterol, hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease and Type 2 diabetes. In addition to these bonuses, many people have found that regular working out can significantly elevate their moods and boost self-esteem. Here are a few commonly held excuses for not exercising and why you need to get over yourself and get to the gym… today!

routine. Try yoga, swimming, or any of the classes offered at your gym or community center. Expand your horizons! “I’ll put off exercising until it gets warmer this spring.” So while you procrastinate, you also become fatter and more sedentary and more unhappy with yourself. There’s no time like the present to get up and get moving toward a new healthier lifestyle. Start with one morning power walk or one yoga class after work. You’ll see just how awesome you feel inside and out!

“I’m too busy to exercise.” What a lame excuse. You make time for those things that matter most – your family, job, social life, etc. Your health is just as important as any of these. Schedule your workouts into your daily activities and stick to it! Get up an hour earlier and take a power walk before going to work. Pack a gym bag and stop at the gym on your way home from the office.Busier and more important people than you find the time regularly to stay fit and healthy.

“I can’t exercise because I have aches and pains and health issues.” I never take on a new client without getting a doctor’s clearance. You should never begin a new exercise program before getting a check-up from your doctor or health care professional. Sure, herniated discs, arthritis, high blood pressure, etc. are serious issues, but not impossible to deal with. For the most part, exercise done right can help you build flexibility at the joints and manage the pain of arthritis better than some traditional treatment programs. Regular training with manageable weights, yoga, stretching classes, and low impact aerobic routines have been shown to decrease pain and increase overall fitness levels.

“Exercise is boring.” Maybe your regimen is what’s boring. Doing the same things every time you hit the gym will produce diminishing results and leave you bored and frustrated for sure. Define your goals, change your workouts, hire a personal trainer to help you come up with a new

As the New Year unfolds, don’t get left behind by friends and co-workers who have already embraced the fitness lifestyle Contact Tom Bonanti at TrainerTomB@aol.com for more inspiration! LA GALETTE DES ROIS

BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY

RECIPE

T

his is a French cake that celebrates the Epiphany, the day when the 3 Kings visited the Baby Jesus. As part of French tradition, a bean or small china “feve” or favor is hidden in the cake. The person who finds the “feve” in his or her slice becomes king or queen for the day. We had this tradition in Ireland too, for Halloween; and the “favor “ was a ring in the Barmbrack. • 1/4 cup almond paste • 1/4 cup white sugar • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened • 1 egg • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 1 pinch salt • 2 packs of frozen puff • 1 egg, beaten

of the pastry that is on the baking sheet. Leave about 1 1/2 inch margin at the edges. Wet the margin with a little water so as it’ll stick together. Don’t forget the little favor in the filling! Place the second sheet of pastry on top, and press down the edges to seal. Beat the remaining egg with a fork, and lightly brush onto the top of the galette. Use a knife to make a criss cross pattern in the egg wash, and then prick several small slits in the top to vent steam while baking. Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven until the top is a deep golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Eat it warm… you are a chef!

Although born in Dublin, Ireland, Chef Jean Doherty spent most of her life in Lyon, France, the gastronomical capital of the world. Together with Vero, her partner of 25 years, Jean has owned and run multiple restaurants including Fort Lauderdale’s Le Patio.

pastry, thawed

Place the almond paste in a food processor with about half of the sugar, and process until well blended. Then add the butter and the remaining sugar and process until smooth, then blend in 1 egg, vanilla extract, almond extract, flour and salt. Set aside. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and set aside. Roll out one sheet of the puff pastry. Keep the pastry cool, don’t knead or stretch it. Repeat with the second sheet of pastry. Refrigerate both sheets. Mound the almond filling onto the center
