TEEN RETURNS TO SCHOOL FOLLOWING SUSPENSION

Pembroke Pines Discusses Domestic Partnerships Pembroke Pines, FL – On Monday afternoon, the Pembroke Pines City Commission discussed the possibility of implementing domestic partnership benefits for city employees. The benefits would include basic legal protection for the city’s workers, including firefighters and police. Currently, more than 60 public employers in Florida provide domestic partner benefits, including Broward County, MiamiDade County, Palm Beach County, Fort Lauderdale, Hallandale Beach, Oakland Park, Tampa, Orlando, Pensacola, Tallahassee, and more. Pembroke Pines is the second largest city in Broward County, so it’s been a long legal battle for the local LGBT community. “...No matter where in the county you live, this policy is important,” a statement from Equality Florida read. “It is time for Pembroke Pines to offer important legal protections to the people who put their lives on the line each day to keep our community safe.”

Fort Lauderdale, FL – On Tuesday morning, the Broward County School Board held a second Board Workshop on the adoption of the Broward County Public Schools Family Health as well as the proposal for the Human Sexuality Policy, both of which are designed to expand on sexual education. Supporters urge that the policy passes in order to be medically accurate and inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. If passed, the policy would also address the high rate of new HIV infections, STDs and unplanned teen pregnancies, which in turn prevent teens from completing their education. “School Board members Rosalind Osgood (District 5) and Robin Bartleman (countywide - at large) should be commended for their bold and courageous leadership on this issue,” said local activist Michael Rajner in a recent statement. Fort Lauderdale was recently ranked second in having the highest rate of new HIV and AIDS cases in the United States. 75.8% of new cases in Broward County are gay males. In Miami-Date County, people ages 13-24 represent

25% of newly reported HIV cases. The School board will take a vote on the policy in February.

C

ocoa, FL – 18-year-old high school student Robert Marucci was at the center of a dispute that went viral over a recent appearance in a gay adult film returned to Cocoa High last Wednesday. Cocoa High’s decision to ban the student from classes was short-lived, and last Tuesday, the district said the teen would be allowed to return to class. “I’m just ready to return to school, like a normal day,” Marucci said. Marucci recently said he was just trying to pay the bills for his family, but when other students found out about his performances, he was bullied. A district spokeswoman said Marucci never mentioned being bullied and even denied that Marucci was suspended because of the film. “We would never suspend a student for his job, or job-related activities,” said spokeswoman Michelle Irwin. “We had to conduct an investigation based on some credible information that we received. When we have anything that’s a safety and security issue we keep a student home.”

The Grammys 2014: From Gay Themes to Live Same-Sex Weddings Los Angeles, CA – The Grammys shocked audience members when Queen Latifah came out during Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ performance with Madonna to marry 33 couples, some of which were same-sex. During the song, the 33 couples exchanged vows and rings. Queen Latifah, who recently gained the authority to marry couples by the state of California, performed the ceremony. But earlier in the night, several themes struck a familiar chord with gay viewers. Sara Bareilles performed her Grammynominated song “Brave,” which centers on Bareilles encouraging a gay friend to come out of the closet. Hunter Hayes belted out his antibullying song, “Invisible,” and newcomer Kacey Musgraves took home Grammys for Country Album of the Year and Country Song of the Year after performing her gay-friendly hit “Follow Your Arrow.” Though Macklemore & Ryan Lewis didn’t win for Album of the Year or Record of the Year, the duo took home an award for Best New Artist.

Indianapolis, IN – Indiana’s ban on same-sex marriage might not be budging anytime soon, but the language is getting a facelift. The amendment to the state’s constitution was put on hold Monday, as the language has to be passed by both houses of the legislature. After being passed by both houses in two separate sessions, the amendment will go to the voters. On Monday evening, the House voted 52-43 to remove the second sentence of the amendment, which bans civil unions and same-sex marriage, reports The Indianapolis Star. If the Senate follows (or doesn’t approve the amend-

BRAZILIAN TRANS WOMEN DETAINED FOR ‘IMITATING’ WOMEN

D

ubai – In late December, two Brazilian trans women were detained in Dubai after being charged with “imitating the opposite sex,” according to a recent report from Brazilian news source ACritica.com. The two women – Karen Mke and Kamilla Satto – were at a popular Dubai nightclub when security guards approached the pair and asked for their identification. When the two handed over their passports and the security guards saw their genders listed as “male,” they were immediately

kicked out of the club. After feeling that they were mistreated, the pair called the police to file a complaint. In what the two now describe as “the worst thing we did,” the call brought police right to the women, and upon learning about their trans identities, were taken into custody. The pair are reporting that they were detained for two days without any explanation as to why. After two days, the women were released after being told that they had violated a local law that prohibits “men from dressing as

women,” according to ACritica. If found guilty, the women could face deportation, fines, and up to 12 months in jail. “We just want to go back to Brazil, and make it clear that we came to experience the culture, and not to attack Islamic laws and moral precepts,” Mke told ACritica.com. “I never imagined this would happen to us. It’s over. We cannot go out into the street, and we do not sleep well with this psychological pressure.” The pair’s passports are being held until their March 23 court date.

in the state altogeher. “They’re willing to have that discussion about whether or not marriage needs to be regulated by the state at all,” state representative Mike Turner told KWTV’s Michael Konopasek. When asked by Konopasek if he thinks marriage could be done away with altogether, Turner replied, “That would definitely be a realistic opportunity.” Conservative representatives are planning to discuss the possibility with Turner. The pro-equality ruling on January 14 is currently on hold while the state appeals it, but a “shell bill” is currently in the legislature, making it so that lawmakers could change the bill at any time following future rulings. Turner also filed a recent bill calling for a second vote to ban same-sex marriage in the state.

said Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry, in a press release. “This offers the possibility that Indiana’s families will not be subjected to a harsh campaign and offensive ballot-measure that would add cruel and unconstitutional language to Indiana’s state constitution.”

constitutional amendment to allow the use of medial marijuana in Florida received just enough votes to make it to the ballot in November. John Morgan, a personal injury lawyer, reportedly spent $4 million on a medical marijuana petition drive, according to the Associate Press. Morgan pushed throughout December and January to gather enough support for the eventual 4-3 vote. Currently legal in 20 states, medical marijuana is gaining great strides and support, except for Gov. Rick Scott and a number of people from the gay community in Wilton Manors. I remember a few months back being at a bar and being approached by someone with a clipboard and a nervous disposition. After all, who wants to sign a petition while they’re out and about, trying to forget about their stressful lives? Not me, that’s for sure. But being respectful of others, I talked to him when he approached me. He had been standing by the door, waiting for someone who I’m assuming “looked” like a supporter of medical marijuana before walking up to me. “Hi, would you like to sign a petition for medical marijuana?” he asked me. I nodded and looked over the petition before signing my name. “Hey, if it’s the right treatment for the person, who am I to judge?” I thought to myself. He looked relieved to have a new signature as he thanked me and waddled back to his post at the door. I went on with my night

and thought nothing more of it. A few days later, I was walking up to Starbucks to get a coffee during lunch time. Another person stood outside of the door, holding a clipboard. “Hello, would you like to sign this petition for medical marijuana?” a different man asked. “I’d love to but I already signed it a few days ago,” I replied. He nodded and gave me an approving grin before I walked away. Throughout their time in Wilton Manors, I noticed a number of people saying “no thanks” to the petition. Were people afraid to say yes? Did they think that their signature would be captured by the government and they would be forever on a naughty list? For whatever reason, I witnessed 6 out of 10 people say “no” to the petition. One of the people, an associate of mine, was at a bar drinking that very same night. I have two words for the naysayers who drink alcohol: Volstead Act.

salut to Vladimir Putin.” This is in part why openly-gay athletes want to participate in The Games. President Obama is sending three openly-gay athletes to the U.S. Delegation for the Olympics to make a statement, including figure skater Brian Boitano, hockey player Caitlin Cahow, and tennis guru Billie Jean King. In a recent interview with CBS, King said “our first job is to represent our country and our president.” This will be the first time since 2000 that the president, vice president, and first lady haven’t attended. “The Olympics are really, first and foremost, about the athletes, and I don’t want anyone to lose sight of that because these athletes have worked so hard,” King said. “Our job is to go and cheer for them and, you know, say, ‘We’re here to support you in any way we can.’” King believes a female president will come soon enough, but a gay president, while possible, won’t likely happen in her lifetime.

A South African website from the company, shareacoke.co.za, invites users to share a virtual Coke by typing their name into a box. However, if you type in “gay,” “lesbian,” “bisexual,” or “queer,” you’ll get an error with along with a surprising message: “Oops, let’s pretend you didn’t just type that. Please try another name.” Coke has declined to issue any sort of statement on anti-gay law. In an interview with Rachel Maddow, David Letterman expressed a strong disdain for the law and the fact that The Games were still happening in Sochi. “I was hoping that everybody would pull out and everybody would say ‘This is not right. This is medieval times. We’re not going,’” the late-night talk show host said. ort Lauderdale, FL – The weeks leading up to the Sochi Winter Olympics have been uncomfortable for many members of the LGBT community, due to the newly implemented “gay propaganda” law. Last week, Pavel Lebedev bravely unfurled a rainbow flag at an Olympic torch relay before being tackled to the ground and detained (within seconds of opening the flag). Lebedev told the Associated Press, “Hosting The Games here contradicts the basic principles of the Olympics, which is to cultivate tolerance.” Russian President Vladimir Putin gave an interview two weeks ago where he seemed to want to put the kibosh on the subject once and for all. Putin told ABC that Sir Elton John is an “extraordinary person regardless of his orientation,” before going on to say that he himself has several gay friends. “It seems to me that the law we have adopted does not hurt anyone,” he said during his interview with ABC. “Moreover, individuals of non-traditional orientation cannot feel like second-rate humans in this country because they are not discriminated against in any way.” However, Sir Elton John seems to think otherwise. In a recent statement posted to John’s website, the singer worries that the law is “damaging and divisive” to gay Russians. “The people I met in Moscow – gay men and lesbians in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s – told me stories about receiving threats from vigilante groups who would ‘cure’ them of homosexuality by dousing them with urine or beating them up,” the star said in his statement. “One young man was stalked outside a gay club by someone posing as a taxi driver who tried to garrote him with a guitar string because he was a ‘sodomite.’” The openly-gay singer-songwriter is also concerned that the law will affect HIV prevention. “...Some of the vital work providing HIV prevention information to the gay community has been labelled ‘homosexual

Hipsters will descend in droves and droves onto The Filmore Miami Beach for this colossal concert. Break out your black-rimmed glasses, thrift store attire, and sarcastic delivery, because Arctic Monkeys, one of the more critically acclaimed British indie-rock bands of the last decade, will be performing in Miami Beach. Arctic Monkeys first captured the public’s attention in 2006 with their acclaimed debut smash album “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.” Since then, other successful albums such as “Favourite Worst Nightmare” and “Humbug” have kept their popularity afloat. 8:30 p.m. The Filmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

One of the most famous and notable comedians of this generation spends a night doling out his classic observational humor. The king of the “You ever notice how…” line, Seinfeld’s stand-up routine became fertile ground for the successful ‘90s sitcom Seinfeld. That show not only catapulted Julie Louis-Dreyfus and racist Michael Richards to fame, but it also started a trend of NYC singles-life sitcoms. Since that time, Jerry Seinfeld has remained an active stand-up comedian and reached the pinnacle of his career by voicing a bee in the animated Bee Movie. 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way. Hollywood, 33314.

When not guest-starring in episodes of Monk, Willie Nelson has found time to create country music. In fact, Willie Nelson is one of the most commercially and critically successful country musicians of the 1960s. But Mr. Nelson is more than just a musician and OCD detective friend, he is also an author, poet, and activist. He was one of the main figures of outlaw country, a subgenre of country music rebelling against the conservative nature of the genre. Nelson has also prominently promoted the legalization of marijuana. Tonight, Nelson whips out his guitar and sings about his status “On the Road Again.” If he whips out an e-cigarette, well…it might not be a cigarette. 8 p.m. Coral Springs Center for the Arts. 2855 Coral Springs Dr, Coral Springs, 33065.

ASK THE FITNESS MAN

BY PETER JACKSON, CPT

FOUR RULES TO A HEALTHIER DIET AND BODY TRANSFORMATION Q: I’ve started working out with a trainer and really need to make some changes to my diet. Where do I start? A: Most people attempting to clean up their diets fail because they make too many changes at once. I counsel clients to identify no more three or four eating habits they wish to change and succeed at those for at least 30 days before making other changes. 1) P AY ATTENTION TO THE COOKING METHOD The way a meal is cooked determines how many calories, how much added fat, and the number of nutrients that survive. This simple factor will make or break your weight loss goal. Avoid foods prepared like this: • Fried and battered • Processed and packaged • Doused with cream sauce • Sauteed Choose foods that are prepared like this: • Grilled • Baked • Broiled • Steamed 2) B UILD YOUR MEALS AROUND PROTEIN The bulk of your calories should be coming from a quality source of protein. With the first guideline in mind, these will be high quality, healthfully prepared.

1

Good choices of protein include: • Fish • Chicken • Turkey • Egg • Lean red meat • Beans

Hold a dumbbell vertically against your chest with both of your hands cupping the top head of the dumbbell. Next, keeping your lower back naturally arched, lower your body as deeply as possible until your elbows brush the inside of your knees. Return to the starting position.

3) INCLUDE LOTS OF FIBER Fiber is a huge part of eating healthy and being lean. Fibrous foods will fill you up while delivering vitamins and nutrients in low-calorie packages. Fill at least two-thirds of your plate with fibrous vegetables. Try these forms of fiber: • Salad • Seasonal vegetables • Fruit • Legumes 4) GO EASY WITH THE STARCHES Here’s where many well-meaning dieters lose it. The facts are simple, in order to maintain the low-carb, high-protein diet required for healthy weight loss, there is little room for starchy foods. Starches to avoid or consume conservatively: • Potatoes • Pasta • Rice and cereal • Bread and crackers

TRAINING TIP MANY BENEFITS TO DUMBBELLS Incorporating the use of dumbbells into your exercise program allows your wrists to be pronated (palms down) and supinated (palms up), changing the angles at which a particular exercise is performed. This is great for hitting muscles not always reached through the use of machines or other equipment. Using dumbbells also allows you to train each arm individually, identifying and improving strengths or weaknesses of a particular arm.

FRENCH APPLE TART

/floridaagenda

BY CHEF JEAN DOHERTY

/floridaagenda

RECIPE

floridaagenda.com

M

ost of todays recipes for apple tart require an ounce or two of sugar, but the earliest recipes don’t. There are two possible reasons: Sugarcane imported from Egypt wasn’t really available in 14th century England, where it cost between one and two shillings a pound — and that’s the equivalent of about 50 dollars a pound in today’s prices! The absence of sugar in the recipe may instead indicate that, because refined sugar was a recent introduction from the Orient, the medieval English didn’t have a sweet tooth. But Honey, which was much cheaper, is also absent from the recipe. Despite the expense, refined sugar did appear much more often in published recipes of the time than honey, suggesting that it was not considered prohibitively expensive. And maybe, as in some of todays “sugar-free” recipes, the juice of the fruit was intended to sweeten the tart. This open faced tart is French, the glaze will not only sweeten but will beautify the tart.

• 4 Granny Smith apples • 1/2 cup sugar • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) cold unsalted butter, small diced • 1/2 cup apricot jam • 1 rectangle of puff pastry • 2 tablespoons rum, or water

January 29, 2014 H 23

Calvados,

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Place the dough on the prepared sheet pan and refrigerate while you prepare the apples. Peel the apples and cut them in half through the stem. Remove the stems and cores with a sharp knife. Slice the apples crosswise in 1/4-inch thick slices. Place overlapping slices of apples diagonally down the middle of the tart and continue making diagonal rows on both sides of the first row until the pastry is covered with apple slices. (I don’t use the apple ends so as the arrangement looks even and delicious to the eye, but you are the chef.) Sprinkle with the full 1/2 cup of sugar and dot with the butter….OR use the whole apple as I did in the photo and make individual tarts which are gorgeous too!! You are the chef. Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the pastry is browned and the edges of the apples start to brown. Rotate the pan during cooking. If the pastry puffs up in one area, cut a little slit with a knife to let the air out. Don’t worry! The apple juices will burn in the pan but the tart will be grand! When the tart’s done, heat the apricot jam with the Calvados and brush the apples and the pastry completely with the mixture. Loosen the tart with a metal spatula so as it doesn’t stick to the paper. Allow to cool and serve warm or at room temperature. Bon appétit!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

floridaagenda.com

BY RICK KARLIN

S

see. The “Road to Paradise” is lined with mile markers every mile, and residents of the Keys refer to them when giving directions, identifying locations as just before or just beyond a mile marker number. For more information on this route, check out southeastroads.com. Take Hwy. 905 south of Miami down to Dagny Johnson Hammock Botanical State Park for a local treasure trove of splendor. Once slated to become a condominium development, this park contains one of the largest tracts of West Indian tropical hardwoods in the United States. Exploring the park´s trails will give you a chance to see some of these rare species of plants and animals The park is home to 84 protected species of plants and animals, including wild cotton, mahogany mistletoe and the

American crocodile. More than six miles of nature trails provide a wealth of opportunities for birdwatchers and photographers. Most of the park´s trails are paved and accessible to both bicycles and wheelchairs. Signs along a self-guided nature trail provide information about the park´s ecosystem and wildlife. Ranger-guided tours are also available. Call (305) 451-1202 or go to floridastateparks.org for more information. A bit longer drive, but worth the effort for the kitsch value alone, is Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, located about an hour north of Tampa at the crossroads of U.S. 19 and State Road 50. The park offers a river cruise and animal demonstrations with tropical birds and native reptiles, but the main draw is the show featuring live “mermaids” which has been

a draw since 1946. An underwater window gives a wide view of the beautiful mermaids who swim in the clear spring waters. The Seminole Indians named the spring “Weeki Wachee,” which means “little spring” or “winding river.” The spring is so deep that the bottom has never been found. Each day, more than 117 million gallons of clear, fresh 74-degree water bubbles up out of subterranean caverns. Sitting in the Mermaid Theater, you’ll be transported back to the time before theme parks and super highways appeared. Admission is reasonably priced ($13 for adults). ometimes at the end of the week, you just want to get in the car and take off, hopefully with a better ending than “Thelma and Louise.” The National Scenic Byways Program is a grass-roots effort to help recognize, selected roads throughout the U.S. with archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities. Florida is home to a large number of these routes, so put the top down, crank up the music and take in the sights. The Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail, a few hours up the coast from Ft. Lauderdale, just past Daytona Beach, includes four state and six local public parks, as well as ten miles of gorgeous Florida beachfront. Take advantage of the unique opportunity to visit three “Old Florida” environments while driving, biking, or hiking along a connected figure-eight shaped corridor. The loop also provides an opportunity to visit museums, historic public buildings, and private homes along the corridor, in Tomoka State Park, and in locations a few blocks off the designated roadways. When driving along the ocean, keep your eyes peeled and you may be able to spot northern right and humpback whales or dolphins. For more information, check out ormondscenicloopandtrail.com. Heading southwest to the Keys can be maddening if you view it as merely the route to Key West. Instead, enjoy the trip itself, from Ft. Lauderdale, through Key Largo, following the Old Keys Railroad Bridges of US 1 to Key West. Rail service to Key West ended when the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 destroyed over 40 miles of track. The state purchased the right-of-way in 1936 and began constructing the Overseas Highway. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, during the three and half hours drive water stretches out as far as the eye can

954Fit Meals

Q&A

Healthy Meals Delivered Right to Your Door

S

BY GRANT JAMES ometimes, it’s hard to eat healthy. Maybe you live alone and cooking multiple meals a day for yourself is physically impossible. Maybe you work long hours and just don’t have the time. Or maybe you’re just looking for excuses to eat that processed food you know and love. Who doesn’t love stress-eating, right? Well now you have no more excuses, because 954Fit Meals delivers healthy, fresh meals to your your door daily. Yes, daily. The Paleo foods that they serve contain no gluten, processed ingredients, or dairy – purely wholesome meats, fish and vegetables. Their naturally low Glycemic Index recipes help regulate insulin levels, which not only reduces body fat, but gives high energy levels as well. We recently sat down with owner Jack Atwell of 954Fit Meals (and Moments In Time Catering) to discuss the benefits of his recipes and the extreme convenience of his meals delivered daily. (Atwell will also bring his knowledge of clean eating to the Brian Neal Fitness & Health Foundation via new healthy-eating classes.)

January 29, 2014 H 26

What’s your philosophy on food? Processed foods are poisoning us. My belief is if it doesn’t come from the ground or it doesn’t have a mother, we shouldn’t be eating it. We don’t use wheat or dairy. We also replace dairy with coconut milk or almond milk whenever the recipe calls for it. The one dairy item that we use instead of cream, is greek yogurt. Why gluten-free? When you cut grains out of your diet, it does amazing things for your body. Your energy level, your physical appearance...I’m sure you’ve heard of the term wheat belly? That’s from gluten. When you take that out, it goes away.

SUBMITTED PHOTOS

Where did you get your start for 954Fit Meals? We started out by cooking for a CrossFit group, who introduced us to the Paleo diet. I’m not a 100% purist when it comes to the diet. I think there’s room to add to what’s already there, so we like to call ourselves ‘Paleo-Driven.’

Do people miss the wheat and grains in the recipes? Most of [my clients] don’t even understand what they’re eating half of the time. I tell them, but it doesn’t seem to matter - they just enjoy it! Whats the pricing like for the meals? If you break it down, it’s $30 a day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can’t eat out for under $30 a day, unless you’re poisoning yourself with fast food. Are your clients just too busy to prepare meals at home?

They don’t really need somebody to do it for them, but most people will not do it at home. If you’re working all day and you have to go home and saute vegetables and kale, you’re not going to do that. You’re going to go grab something in a box and heat it up. Jack Atwell will be teaching healthy-eating classes for the Brian Neal Fitness & Health Foundation in order to reinforce the idea of bringing healthy habits home, especially for those living with life-threatening conditions.
