SUNSHINE STATE Equality Suit Filed for Same-Sex Florida Couples Married Out of State

Miami, FL – On Wednesday March 12, The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Florida filed a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of eight samesex couples, as well as the LGBT rights group, SAVE. The lawsuit will be challenging the Sunshine State’s refusal to recognize marriages performed in state’s where same-sex weddings are legal. “Each of these couples has their own story of how the state’s discriminatory refusal to recognize their marriages has impacted their lives,” said Daniel Tilley, the attorney for ACLU. “These eight couples have all the rights and responsibilities of marriage in the states where they exchanged vows, and the federal government recognizes their marriages as well. It’s time for Florida to stop the harmful practice of treating committed couples as if they are strangers.” SAVE Dade, a Miami-based organization dedicated to protecting the rights
of members within the LGBT community, is another hopeful plaintiff. “All around the country, loving couples enjoy the rights and responsibilities that come with a marriage fully recognized by their state, and it’s time Florida couples enjoyed that as well,” said Tony Lima, Executive Director of SAVE. “Why should couples who commit to love and care for one another lose protections for that relationship when they return to Florida?” The lawsuit currently lists Governor Rick Scott, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Florida Surgeon General and Secretary of Health John H. Armstrong, and Florida Department of Management Services Craig J. Nichols as defendants. For more information on the ACLU’s support for the LGBT community, go to aclufl.org/marriageequality.

teacher, a mom, a journalist, a political public relations consultant and an activist since the early ‘60s,” which led her to LGBT civil rights. She also founded the Key West National Organization for Women, and remains involved with the Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, the ACLU, and the Key West Equality Florida Gala. The event will also feature participants from a recent essay contest, “What Equality Means to Me” at Key West High School. Included in the same poll is a question that focuses on whether the increase of same-sex parents is a good thing or a bad thing. The results were similar: 18 percent of young Republicans said they think same-sex parenting is a bad thing for society, 26 percent say it is a good thing, and 56 percent either are indifferent.

Judith Levy: Michigan’s First OpenlyGay Federal Judge

Judith Levy became Michigan’s first out federal judge in a unanimous vote on March 12, according to The Washington Blade. Levy was nominated for her seat in July by President Obama, and has now won in a vote of 97-0. Executive director of the LGBT Bar Association, D’arcy Kemnitz, praised the decision as well as the recent additions of other openly-gay federal judges. “Judith Levy will make an incredible addition to the Michigan’s judiciary,” said Kemnitz. “LGBT representation in our courts is critical and speaks to the tremendous advocacy and support our

In a new poll from the Pew Research Center, 61 percent of Republicans under the age of 30 are in favor of same-sex marriage. The poll – in the 18-29 age range – states that roughly 35 percent of young members of the GOP are opposed to marriage equality. The older the age bracket, the lower the percentage of approval; 43 percent are pro gaymarriage ages 30-49, 30 percent in the 50-64 range, and finally 22 percent for 65 and up. On the Democratic side, 77 percent approve of same-sex marriage ages 18-29, 66 percent at 50-64, and at 65 and older, 62 percent. “This generation gap among Repub-
Boston Mayor Martin Walsh
Boise, ID – Dom Gelsomino, a 21-yearold Republican from Idaho, could be the youngest openly-gay candidate if he wins the vote for a House seat in District 18. “Idaho is in for quite a treat,” Gelsomino said to Idaho’s JRN. “Idaho gets to see its first openly gay Republican run for office – and a conservative Republican, too.” Though he knows that gay rights will likely be a focal point of his run, he assures the media that he wouldn’t
want his campaign to focus solely on the topic. “I would support ‘Add The Words’ where religious institutions, organizations and businesses would be exempt as would be the federal and state-owned businesses, builldings, or organizations,” Gelsomino said. The young Republican’s opponent, Democratic Representative Phylis King, is also a co-sponsor of ‘Add The Words,’ and told JRN that people, including herself, aren’t focusing on Gelsomino’s sexuality, but are opting to focus on other issues instead. “All the times I’ve been talking to people, the number one issue is education and economy and jobs and I just think they’re going to vote for me for that reason,” she told JRN. Gelsomino is hopeful for a career in the Republican party despite his sexuality. He too wants to focus on issues other than gay rights alone. “Despite my personal life, it’s how I will vote that’s going to matter,” he said.

Boston, MA – Boston’s Irish-American mayor, Martin Walsh, has been trying to get the organizers for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade to compromise on their LGBT exclusionary rules for the past month to no avail. The parade organizers finally allowed gay participants to join in, but told them they would not be able to carry any gay rights clothing, flags, or signs. The problems with the parade continue outside of Massachusetts in New York, who held a parade on Monday as well. Like Walsh, Mayor Bill de Blasio didn’t attend the parade as a political response. “I will be participating in a number of other events to honor the Irish heritage of this city, but I simply disagree with the organizers of that parade,” said de Blasio last month. The ongoing conflict also extends upward, involving the corporate sponsors as well. Sam Adams, Heineken and Guiness both pulled their sponsorships for the festivities.

Porn or Art? The controversial, critically acclaimed French film “Blue is the Warmest Color” made waves as soon as it premiered at Cannes last summer. After receiving the Palme D’Or, the two leads, Adele Exarchopous and Lea Syodux, complained about director Abdellatif Kechiche’s abusive and unrelenting style. The film itself showcases the passionate and steamy relationship between two young women in a highly sexual and destructive affair. Egregious and shocking sex scenes added to the controversy. Despite all the press, the film is heralded as a groundbreaking exploration of lesbian identity and first love. 7 p.m. The Pride Center at Equality Park. 2040 N Dixie Hwy, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Cathy – who said his views on traditional marriage haven’t changed – told the AJC that the Atlanta-based company shouldn’t have made the comments in the first place, even regretting the fact that he did so. “Every leader goes through different phases of maturity, growth and development and it helps by recognizing the mistakes that you make,” Cathy told the AJC. “And you learn from those mistakes. If not, you’re just a fool. I’m thankful that I lived through it and I learned a lot from it.” When he says he learned a lot from it, I think he means he learned what not to say around the media. “It’s probably very wise from our standpoint to make

sure that we present our brand in a compelling way that the consumer can relate to,” he said in the interview. “Consumers want to do business with brands that they can interface with, that they can relate with.” True, it’s much easier to relate to a non-political fast-food chain, but when is it okay to stop boycotting a brand? If the company’s chairman apologizes (like Guido Barilla did), at what point are we supposed to forgive and forget? When is it appropriate to start loving that delicious chicken again? Is there a time when it becomes appropriate at all? “I think that’s a political debate that’s going to rage on,” Cathy said. “And the wiser thing for us to do is to stay focused on customer service.” Though Barilla apologized, he still has not produced a gay-friendly advertisement in Europe, and Chickfil-A’s CEO hasn’t changed his stance on gay marriage either, so either way one thing is for certain: Time is not of the essence.

eginald Dunlap tells us he has just returned from a trip to Paris, where he heads whenever he feels he needs to clear his head while simultaneously getting creatively stimulated. He works for a number of clients across the world, many of whom he can’t name for the sake of privacy. A principal interior designer for Luxe Design & Finishing in Miami, Dunlap says he’s big on the all-white with wood accent trend that’s taking over South Florida right now. “I like monochromatic design with pops of color,” Dunlap tells us. “The trend now is to mix white with walnuts, caramels and browns. It’s like ’50s Mod updated.” But when talking about trends, Dunlap is quick to tell us that styles change depending on the area you’re living in.
“The white trend is very native to South Florida – if we weren’t in South Florida, we wouldn’t be doing it,” the designer explains. Dunlap and his business partner, Martin Elortegui, have 30 years of combined experience in the field. Dunlap has the design component, and Elortegui is in charge of business development and construction. The company’s mission statement is based on trust, which they believe to be the key factor in designing. “Developing a client’s trust with the owner,

GET OUT OF YOUR RUT!
Y

Understanding your nutrition and how it affects your body is crucial not only to successful training, but also to your recovery process. During a slump, a lot of guys either eat like birds and lose size, of they binge out and get as big as cows. Whatever you’re going through, you’ve got to eat! Eat your meals at consistent times throughout the day. Eat light and often. Consuming smaller meals every 2-3 hours raises your metabolic rate and stabilizes blood sugar and energy levels. Never skip a healthy breakfast and stay away from quick, sugary, fatty comfort foods that will ultimately leave you feeling worse than ever. The dedication necessary to succeed at body building is substantial, and it requires focus and intensity. When you’re in a slump, you’re often frustrated and negative about your drop in performance. Look for opportunities to lighten up and laugh. Avoid negative people who drag you down. Listen to music that can calm and soothe as well as energize and rejuvenate you. Psychological changes associated with positive emotions occur that directly oppose the chemicals that accompany

ou’ve probably been there before, or maybe you’re there now: you just can’t get into your workouts. The exercises seem boring, the weights are too heavy, and you feel like you’d rather be anywhere else but in the gym. You are experiencing a performance slump – a frustrating, seemingly unexplainable drop in performance which typically lasts for an extended period of time. In nearly every case, though, a source can be found. Slumps are often traced to a lack of recovery time from stressful situations, insufficient sleep, overtraining, or just a general feeling of malaise over life in general. The good news is that no matter what the hell the problem is about – job stress, a breakup with your boyfriend, a let down after vacation, or overtraining itself – there are mechanisms of recovery that can have you back in the gym doing battle with the weights in no time. A number of these tips come from Jim Loehr, a sports psychologist in his book, Stress for Success. First of all, you’ve got to rest. And by that, I don’t mean lying on the couch watching episodes of the “The Biggest Loser”. Active rest refers to recovery methods that involve movement. For example, walking, stretching, yoga, and golfing are all types of active rest that can help you recharge your batteries. If you simply can’t stay out of the gym, incorporate a wide variety of low weight, high rep weight training exercises for each of the various muscle groups. You’ll be amazed how you’ll grow once you resume more intense training habits. Passive rest is also essential and it can help rejuvenate your soul as well as your body. Examples of passive rest include meditation, napping, sitting in the park, or catching up with an old friend for some conversation. Note: passive rest does not include sitting on a bar stool drinking for six hours.

negativity and frustration. Finally, a good night’s rest is by far the most natural and essential recovery activity. Depriving yourself of sleep is like depriving yourself of food. A sleep debt of as little as three hours has been shown to significantly reduce physical strength in weightlifters. Lack of good quality, uninterrupted REM (rapid eye movement) sleep can cause paranoia, migraines, and violent mood swings as well as unwanted weight gain. Busting out of your slump doesn’t happen automatically – it takes planning and effort. Remember, recovery in your training and everyday life is just as important as the hard work you put into them. For more tips on how to fire up your workouts this summer contact trainertomb@aol.com.

The company has worked in such spaces as the Island City Lofts, Exchange Lofts, W Residences and even the Trump Towers/Trump Royal. “When you walk into a design room, you should feel something,” Dunlap explains. “You can love it, or you can hate it, but you have to feel something.” Dunlap says that one of his favorite emerging trends is the graphic design print trend, where a painter is hired to do a pattern or design that you would normally assume is wallpaper. “I’m using street graffiti in a lot of my client’s homes as well,” he adds. He’s also into scaling things in a way that you normally wouldn’t think of, so
that when you walk in the room, it sticks out. (For example, an oversized chair or furniture piece.) “Wood paneling is back as well,” Dunlap says. “To make that work in South Florida though, we would have to make it feel light and airy.” If you’re looking for something more lavish and eye-catching, Dunlap can do something beautiful that you can switch out (depending on your color schemes); the Luxe designer tells us that he has most recently been using Hermes scarves on the walls to provide a high-end pop of color. “I just worked with a client on a room where I did a gray box on the wall, where I used a blue Hermes scarf ” he says. “Whenever she gets tired of the blue, she can swap it out for yellow.” Dunlap jokes, “It isn’t cheap though!” For more information on Luxe Design & Finishing, visit www.luxeidf.com. hampagne wishes and caviar dreams,” as Robin Leach used to say on the ’80s television show Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. That show was known for giving a glimpse into the lives of the 1%, when we aspired to be them instead of resented them. If you’ve got a bit of excess cash (don’t we all?) and want to experience that lifestyle, if only for a week or so, here are a few vacations where you can live the dream. Ever dreamed that you could live in a castle? ChicVillas, based in the heart of the France’s famous Loire Valley, makes that possible. The company offers a wide selection of properties for vacationers looking for something unique. Its rentals include a chateau located just outside of Paris, manor-style houses in Brittany, medieval castles situated amidst the vineyards in the south of France, and exceptional houses in the Basque Country. What is a house without a staff? ChicVillas can provide a private chef, driver, butler, etc. and since most of the

properties accommodate at least 10 people, it makes it quite affordable when you figure out the per person cost. Among ChicVilla’s properties are Le Château Millénaire. Following a vast and carefully planned renovation it has become an extremely comfortable vacation accommodation. It comfortably accommodates fifteen people with period living rooms and library, orangery, terraced gardens overlooking the vineyards and a large swimming pool in the grounds; it has everything that is required to make it an outstanding getaway The Château’s wine cellars are legendary and may be used for tastings or parties. Among the other amenities are; acres of grounds with shady, terraced gardens and an orange grove, a heated swimming pool and nearby tennis court. One week rental is €6070. If you prefer something more modern, Costa Blanca, in Spain, is carefully decorated with Asian influences, has a swim-
ming pool surrounded by a lovely garden, barbecue, outdoor sink and worktop. The villa can accommodate six guests and rents for €2930 to €3170 weekly. For information on these and additional properties, go to www.chicvillas.com. The site is in French, but offers English translations. If European luxury isn’t your thing, check out the getaway package offered by Hilton Brisbane. The hotel’s “Bubbly Nights in Brisbane” accommodation package, $255 per room per night , includes an overnight stay for two in a Hilton guest room, a complimentary bottle of Veuve Clicquot Vintage 2004, a dining voucher at the hotel’s upscale Vintaged Bar + Grill and a 15% discount on merchandise purchased at Monili Jewelry.
