Congregation Etz Chaim Gets New Home Congregation Etz Chaim gets a new home. South Florida’s only LGBT synagogue is returning to Wilton Manors where it was originally established nearly 40 years ago. The synagogue will move into the Unity church building at 1501 NE 26th St. in Wilton Manors, and have the first service in its new home at 8 p.m. July 11. For more information, visit http://www.etzchaimflorida.org. According to Rabbi Noah Kitty, the move has nothing to do with the recent merger of Temple Beth Torah and the Sunrise Jewish Center. Etz Chaim recognized that its community was in east Broward County, she said. Kitty did not want to label the synagogue as being for only one segment

SUNSHINE STATE Orlando Votes for Same-Sex Marriage ORLANDO, FL--By a vote of 5-2, the Orlando City Council voted to file a court brief opposing Florida’s same-sexmarriage ban approved by voters in 2008. Comm. Jim Gray and Tony Ortiz, the two Republicans on Orlando’s City Council, voted no. Gray’s argument against the measure was that it was an inappropriate topic to be voted upon by the City Council. Ortiz labeled his Orlando district as “very conservative.” The filing, in which Orlando was joined by the city of Miami Beach, puts Orlando on a crash course with Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi who refuses to admit that she is wasting taxpayers’ money in defense of the state’s constitutional prohibition on same-se marriage. Though not a party to the actual cases before state and federal courts, Orlando’s Mayor Buddy Dyer sought the council’s permission to file a friend-of-the-court brief arguing in support of same-sex marriage. “I have a lot of gay and lesbian friends and I would put my life in front of a bullet for them,” Ortiz said. “But there are issues that transcend more than just a vote of the City Council, issues that have to do with spirituality,” Ortiz told the Sun-Sentinel newspaper. Orlando’s openly lesbian Comm. Patty Sheehan heatedly disagreed. “It’s so important to be able to love the person of your choice and have that respected by your state and federal governments,” Sheehan said. “Anybody who stands for discrimination can’t just say they have gay friends. … Equality is for everyone, not just who you decide to be friends with.” Dyer argued Orlando needed to be seen as an all-inclusive city to encourage economic development and tourism. “If you’re a city that promotes inclusion and fairness and equality, then you’re
more likely to attract this generation of knowledge workers who are going to make our city successful in the future,” Dyer said. “If you are seen as a city that promotes diversity, you are head and shoulders above those that do not.” The brief argues that in addition to bringing legal, financial and psychological harm to families living in the two cities, marriage inequality makes it difficult for the governments to recruit talented employees and hurts tourism. “The fact that the leaders of a major city like Orlando care enough about the welfare of their citizens to do this sends a message,” said Orlando attorney Mary Meeks, one of the lawyers representing six same-sex couples in a lawsuit filed in Miami in January. In the Miami case, the plaintiffs have asked a judge to find Florida’s law restricting marriage to one man and one woman an unconstitutional violation of the Equal Protection and Due Process clauses of the U.S. Constitution. There’s a key hearing in that case July 2. And in his “State of the City” speech two months ago, Dyer directly addressed Florida’s gay-marriage ban: “One day I hope we are the city that hosts the state’s first same-sex marriage,” he said at the time. “Love and commitment should be encouraged, celebrated and embraced as a constitutional right for all,” he told the Sun-Sentinal.
Burned Homicide Victim Identified FORT MYERES, FL--The burned body of prostitute Eddie James Owens was found behind a building housing a rental car agency located at 2807 Fowler St., in Fort Myers. The discovery was made last Thursday at about 8 a.m. No arrests have been made in what authorities are calling a homicide. While police say the murder was not a hate crime, it was known locally that Owens had been arrested multiple times in Lee County, including twice on prostitution charges. When dressed as a female, Owens was known as Yaz’min Shancez.bv
their ignorance on the topic in a revealing piece in Politico. Paulk, now an openly gay man, appeared on the cover of Newsweek magazine in 1998 with his wife as a poster boy for going straight. Today he disavows the gay conversion movement saying it almost destroyed him. He worries about the widespread ignorance among social conservatives about what being gay means.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry admitted he “stepped right in it” when he compared homosexuality to alcoholism while discussing gay conversion therapy last week. After a national backlash, the former and possibly future presidential hopeful walked the statement back this week. “We need to be a really respectful and tolerant country to everybody,” he said. “Whether you’re gay or straight, you need to be having a job, and those are the focuses that I want to be involved with,” he said. “We’re an incredibly diverse mosaic of a country,” Perry continued. “A lot of these issues need to be decided at the state level.” The day before, on Wednesday, Perry refused to back down from the Gay/Alcoholism comments on CNN’s “Crossfire” when he was asked by co-host Stephanie Cutter whether he believes homosexuality is a disease. “I think my position has been fairly clear on that for a substantial period of time,” Perry said, pivoting quickly to the economy. A former leading advocate for gay conversion therapy, John Paulk, was part of that backlash. He took Perry and other conservatives to task for
banner of bigotry over our city.” Mayor Dennis Browning criticized the language Stark chose for his statement. “Beat me with a stick and don’t think I’m going to vote for it,” Browning said. Councilmen Larry Coulouris joined the mayor in his criticism of Stark’s comments. “Your remarks addressed to this public body are, I think, a little out of line,” Coulouris said. “And I hope you will give this serious consideration.” Mayor Pro Tem Amos O’Neal also expressed his distaste for Stark’s comments. “I thought those remarks were very insulting as well,” O’Neal said. “That’s not the place for those comments, to be coming in this chamber.” Councilman Demond Tibbs merely thanked Stark and two others speaking on the issue of the defeated ordinance — Leo Romo and Charin Davenport — for staying “involved in the process.” Five other members of City Council chose not to address the issue during the “council comments” portion of the meeting, which gives individual members a chance to respond to residents’ concerns and make other announcements.
legal in 19 states plus the District of Columbia.” The editorial pointed to the vote by the U.S. Presbyterian Church last week changing the definition of marriage from “a man and a woman” to “two people.” The Presbyterian Church also is allowing its ministers to perform same-sex weddings. “The move brings the U.S. Presbyterian Church in line with several other religious groups, including the United Church of Christ, the Quakers and the Reform and Conservative Jewish movements,” the editorial said.
Sodomy Gets Go-Ahead in Alabama MONTGOMERY, AL—Eleven years after the U.S. Supreme Court decision to name sodomy legal in all states, the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals has finally ruled that the state’s antisodomy law is unconstitutional. In the 2003 Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court essentially ruled that the antisodomy laws are unconstitutional in the dozen or so states that still have these laws on the books— many dating to the 1880s. According to reports in Advocate, in the Alabama case, Dewayne Williams was charged with first-degree sodomy in 2010, and a jury in the Dallas County counrtoom convicted him of the less major offense of sexual misconduct His sexual partner claimed Williams forced him to have sex, but Williams said the act was consensual. William appealed his conviction using Lawrence v. Texas as a case point. The Alabams Appeals Court agreed unanimously and overturned his conviction. Tuesdays’ decision takes place immediately.

SAGINAW, MI — The City Council in Saginaw, MI, twice defeated an ordinance to protect the LGBT community. Despite going against recent historical gains on the subject of discrimination against the LGBT community, the City Council in this poverty stricken city of 50,000 seems determined to undermine any hope they might have of appearing unbiased and welcoming to the gay tourism dollar at a time when the city is in desperate need of a revitalization program. During the two City Council meetings since that time, small groups of supporters have spoken up for the proposed ordinance, which was defeated twice by City Council during two separate meetings in May. John Stark has voiced his support for the ordinance at past city meetings. Stark stepped up to the podium Monday, June 23, to read a proclamation-style statement. Stark declared the summer of 2014 should be declared City Council’s “Season of Shame,” in connection with its decision to defeat the proposed nondiscrimination ordinance. “To the Council: Shame on you as a body,” he said. “Shame on all of you. Shame.” In his statement, Stark encouraged the citizens of Saginaw to: “Recognize the cowardice exhibited, the failure of leadership shown, and the self-inflicted injury visited upon our great city.” Stark accused City Council of being “mean-spirited” and of raising “a

HICAGO, IL—In an op-ed piece printed in the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago SunTimes.com last Sunday, the wellrespected newspaper became the first to predict that the advances and political gains of the LGBT community were unstoppable. The article, published during Chicago’s Gay Pride, said that “the victories keep on rolling in…and that there was “no turning back.” “The tipping point has arrived — and the gay rights movement clearly is on the other side,” the editorial said in part. “Marriage is now

o put it mildly, it was a mess. The Stonewall Pride Festival, I mean. It was not all bad news, of course. The skies opened up around 1 p.m. in one of those torrential downpours that keep Florida so green all year long. It sent a very sparse crowd scrambling for cover, but not to where you might ordinarily imagine. My husband Michael, who you all know as the general manager of Scarfone’s reported a full house for lunch, for happy hour, and for dinner, where there was a waiting time of about twenty minutes. But then, having opened only three weeks ago, those guys are still the new kids on the block. Over at Alibi, across the street from the Center Stage, with a Bud Light tent in full evidence in its parking lot, there were no stragglers, wet or otherwise to be found. I have to admit the music was great, coming from a DJ covered in plastic sheeting and tarpaulins and, while I would love to give credit where credit is due, I haven’t a clue who was camping out under the tentery. Manor’s outside bar was empty, and their inside space was still nine hours from being jammed packed and pulsating. Rumor’s had its stage set up and waiting for the arrival of Neon Hitch, whose show was a slamdunk success. But that was still hours away as well. When the rain stopped, then restarted, and then eventually stopped for good around 5 o’clock, a quick check of the street and Pride vendor booths found some major surprises. There were many stands that remained unoccupied, though they had obviously been sold and some attempt had been made to create a shell of a design. The biggest shock ended up being on the North and South Stages, which were in place but without electric,

sound or lighting. This includes the huge Brian Neal Fitness and Health/ Guy Magazine stage which was puddled but unoccupied, even as the sun was setting. The promised all-star lineup of 40 entertainers never materialized, but then who can sing without a microphone and in the dark? At the other end of the Drive, the South Stage was in no better shape, with Sidelines’ Laurie Whittaker wearing her “don’t-even-try-it” face. While the obvious blame game could have been logically aimed at the rain, and the problems it brought, in reality the “stage issue” as it became known was solely the problem of a guy named “Mike” who had been contracted to set up the sound and lights, and ended up having “truck problems.” Nicollette, the drag queen star of Lips Nightclub’s Sunday Gospel Brunch, allowed her self-importance to overpower her logic as she blasted Facebook with venomous threats against Guy’s publisher Bobby Blair, for having not advised her of the rain

(can anyone say professional suicide). She promised on-line not to work for Blair ever again. Please say it’s true. Rocky Bowell, president of Pride South Florida, who ran the event for the City of Wilton Manors, added: “As with all new endeavors, there are always some bumps in the road. This was Pride South Florida’s first Stonewall Pride, and as such this was not exempt from glitches that happen on such large events. As we all know the best laid plans as they say.... never go without challenges. In this case unfortunately, Mother Nature added to the issues with the lovely “stormy” weather that was bestowed upon us. The members of the Pride South Florida board persevered and kept going through all the adversity…” While I’d love to throw rocks, my honest opinion is that Stonewall Pride was a mess and a lot of fun. Let’s learn from the mistakes that were made and bring back Pride South Florida for another year. I like the sound of it already…Until next week…

Re-Designing Women
LGBTQ Community Panel
“Uncovered: The Diary Project”
Out in the Tropics is an artistically outstanding performance festival featuring work by some of today’s most innovative and relevant GLBTQ artists. The festival runs throughout the weekend. Today’s event brings all of the performers from the festival for a panel discussion involving the community. Along with local LGBTQ artists and activists, the panel will discuss their art and the possibilities for exploring LGBTQ culture in a safe and encouraging environment. Participants will be able to meet the artists in an informal, relaxed atmosphere conducive to intimate personal disclosure and intercultural exchange. 7 p.m. GLBT Visitor’s Center. 1130 Washington Ave. Miami Beach. 33139.
As the difficulties facing transgender and queer people come to light, more and more artistic responses have developed within the past few years. Sean Dorsey Dance Company spent a year-and-a-half researching diaries of transgender and queer people, from the famous to the unknown. The mysteries revealed through these entries culminated in a series of powerful dances revealing the lives and stories that history has tried to erase. This impactful, highly praised, and poetic dance is also part of the Out in the Tropics performance festival. 8:30 p.m. Colony Theater. 1040 Lincoln Rd. Miami Beach. 33139.
The 1980s television sitcom “Designing Women” is known for both Delta Burke and its flamboyant, Southern style. The show focused around two sisters, Suzanne and Julia Sugarbaker, and the other members of their design firm, Sugarbaker Designs. Now a gay cult-classic (with reruns currently playing on Logo), the show has been remade into a play for the Empire Stage as “Re-Designing Women.” The satirical play sets the action in the same Atlanta design firm, except all the characters are now performed in drag. Parodist playwright Jamie Morris wrote the show, which places the four Southern belles on a reality TV show. 8 p.m. Empire Stage. 1140 N. Flagler Drive. Fort Lauderdale. 33304.

hen the incredibly successful Gay Days Orlando decided to expand the franchise this year to include Fort Lauderdale, it could have selected any weekend in the last six months of 2014. And at last count, there were 26 of them. But Gay Days Fort Lauderdale did not select just any week in the last 26. They selected Thanksgiving 2014—Nov. 25 though Dec. 1. The powers that be are already attempting to label the days, “The Gay and Lesbian Experience of a Lifetime.” Now that may be a bit of a stretch, for, lest you forget, the LGBT community already has plans for that weekend—just as they have had for the past 30 years. It’s the White Party. Yes, the venerable White Party that is the primary fundraiser for Care Resource, South Florida’s oldest and largest nonprofit HIV/AIDS service organization. Every year, tens of thousands of circuit boys, muscle boys, daddies, bears, lesbians and their fans, pour into South Beach in an annual rite of passage that’s as predictable as the swallows coming back to Capistrano. So when Care Resource’s Chief Executive Officer Rick Siclari heard the news that Gay Days president Chris Alexander-Manley had decided to attempt to piggy-back his very-for-profit Gay
Days, wrapping it like a fancy hors d’oeuvres around the same weekend as the White Party, he was noticeably upset. In a letter that Siclari wrote to Alexander-Manley, and obtained by the Agenda, he was seemingly in control and understated. “Although we are happy that Gay Days is expanding into South Florida,” Siclari wrote, “we are disappointed about your choice of dates….as this is another time our community suffers from someone arriving in town and capitalizing off what our not-for-profit agency has spent years building to benefit our HIV positive community.” With obvious restraint, Siclari continued, “We are saddened by the non-inclusiveness of the South Florida LGBT business and nonprofit community in determining your event dates.” Obviously, the date selection was not accidental, but was determined by the preannounced White Party dates and calculated to put the most money into private enterprise as possible. Since the LGBT community is a finite group, with only so many resources and play dates available each year to comb out the extensions, dry clean the thong, and x-out the calendar for partying hardily, there can be no misinterpretation of what Gay Days is up to. Divide and conquer—or die trying.
Naturally, there will be those party boys that will toss off the old and welcome in the new to see that the fresh kids are going to bring to the table. Gay Days has already announced its host hotel will be the uber-chic W, which as the flagship of the Starwood Collection, obviously has no clue that it’s now looked upon by some as part of the greedy corporate arena trying to make a quick buck off the pain and suffering of the ill and needy. “White Party is not about business enterprise,” Siclari wrote. “It’s about people, friends, those we care for, and those whose memories we will continue to honor, by helping those we still can.” At press time, neither Alexander-Manley nor Siclari had returned phone messages for comment. When Gay Days expanded last year to Las Vegas for the first time, it attracted 30,000 of LGBT’s richest and finest to throw down a party on the Strip in the Entertainment Capital of the World. It will be interesting to see what side those same gays and their friends pick this coming Thanksgiving. These men and women are rich, intelligent and characteristically unfaithful. One thing they are not are fools. A party is one thing. A party for charity is another. Get out your armor and the good long nails. You’re going to need it for this war—for it’s already begun!

ummer is a perfect time for taking a much-needed vacation. For many of us, it is the only time that things slow down a bit from the hectic routine so that we can break away and relax. Yet, no matter how much we look forward to time away from the rat race, traveling doesn’t come without a few concerns, especially when it comes to maintaining your overall fitness routine. Aggravation over flight delays, missed connections and lost baggage are but a few of the stresses of modern travel. Combine these with crappy fast food, poor sleep and missed workouts, and you have a recipe for disaster. Whether you’re travelling for business or pleasure, don’t throw in the towel yet! Simply adjust your mindset and realize that you can stay fit and trim and keep that hard earned muscle. After all, isn’t your vacation a time to strut your stuff and show off all the hard work you’ve done in the gym all year long? First, learn to take control of your nutrition. Think ahead and check out restaurants online and find places that have healthy menus that are within your budget. When dining out, often the low-fat or vegetarian meal is a good choice. Stay away from breads and appetizers, sticking instead with soup or a salad before your main course. These foods tend to fill you up and make you less hungry for that monster main course ahead. Take the skin off chicken and scrape those salty, fatty sauces to the side. Skip the dessert! As a footnote, don’t be afraid to throw caution to the wind on occasion and splurge at a fancy restaurant for a night or two, especially if daddy is paying. You only live once and one sumptuous
meal and a bottle of fine vino or a few cocktails won’t set you back that far! Speaking of sauce, try to set a limit of two drinks per day. Alcohol not only makes you hungrier, it’s also loaded with calories. There are 7 calories in every gram of alcohol. Eventually it is turned to sugar in your system and stored by your body as fat. Besides, your vacation time is too precious to stay bombed and hung over! Second, you need to exercise on the road. If you don’t already have a schedule full of activities that are physical and challenging, then make sure to make time for working out while you are away. Call ahead, to see if your hotel or guesthouse has a fitness center or pool. If you’re staying at a facility sans gym and pool, then find out if there is a health club nearby. You may have to pay $10-$50 for a few days pass, but it will be the wisest travel expense you’ll make. Set a special goal that you can hit while on the road with your workouts. For example, it could be a cardiovascular-based goal such as seeing how many laps you can perform in the hotel pool. Or if you have no gym available and are confined to your room, see how many crunches or push-ups you can do in a one-minute period. Remember, fitness is more than just counting calories and hitting the gym a few hours a week. It’s a lifestyle that requires sacrifice and planning. But have fun with it and be adventurous as well! POTATO SALAD

otato salad caught on in America in the late 1800s, probably by way of the German immigrants. The original German recipe used warm vinegar, although chilled potato salad with a creamy dressing is definitely more popular now. Greek potato salad features olive oil, garlic, and lemon. The Italian version contains salami, olive oil, vinegar, and parsley. There are also Swedish, Russian, French, and English versions, among others. Everyone has his or her own favorite recipe for potato salad… here’s my Irish one!
• 2 ½ lbs potatoes, pre-cooked • 2/3 cup spring onion, thinly sliced • 2 eggs hard boiled, cold • 2/3-1 cup mayonnaise or 2/3-1 cup salad cream • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon pepper, course

Cube the spuds and boil until cooked but not falling to pieces. Leave to cool. Slice up the spring onions thinly and add to the potatoes along with seasoning. Mash the egg with a fork and add to the potatoes. Mix carefully, then add the mayonnaise or salad cream to mix. Place in a dish and sprinkle with some paprika, if you like to spice it up. Serve and enjoy. You are the chef!

SUAN THAI & JAPANESE RESTAURANT 290 N FEDERAL HWY, FORT LAUDERDALE FL 33301 954-870-6169

ster Nam Dang, a small steamed lobster tail topped with ground shrimp, peas, mushrooms, pineapple, corn and cashew nuts-$25.99); and various rolls (if you like fried chicken, aim for the Katsu Roll, which has crispy chicken, asparagus, avocado, scallions with a spicy mayo dressing and scattered sesame seeds for $9.99). It’s not unusual to find Ginger Duck ($21.99) on a Thai resaurant’s menu. As presented here at Suan, it’s a major event with half of a duck, deboned and sautéed with ginger, onions, bell peppers, pineapple, mushrooms and scallions. It was perfectly cooked—no small task with duck that can quickly turn dry and hard if prepared at all in advance. Think health and order Miso Soup ($2.99), the least fattening item on the menu—its light soybean broth infused with tofu, scallions and seaweed. It’s also available in an unusual chunky vegetable version for $4.99. And you can never go wrong with a green Papaya Salad ($7.99) that has crushed peanuts for some healthy fats with tomatoes and carrots for added fiber. Delicious. Overall, Suan Thai & Japanese Restaurant is home to an assortment of tempting flavors combined in traditional fashion. There isn’t much in the way of romantic décor here. It has a sterile interior with efficient table set-up and hard stackable chairs, making certain that you won’t stay for a leisurely meal. Expect the takeout business to be brisk at Suan, with free delivery within two miles. All of that is the good news. The bad news is that Suan, for all its selection, has nothing that makes it a homerun trendsetter—neither in its décor or kitchen offerings. This is a problem for a new restaurant with a high price point. You can save a great deal by showing up for lunch with its $8.95 specials (the restaurant opens at 11:30 a.m. most days). n a town that is abundant with Thai and Japanese Restaurants, it always amazes us when yet another Thai eatery opens and hopes to find its niche. So it was much anticipation that we ate dinner the other evening at Suan. Housed in the remains of a former Baja Fresh fast food Mexican restaurant, Suan sits as the anchor of a strip mall on Federal Highway a few blocks north of Broward Blvd. In every Thai restaurant we review, the first must-have item is always the Pai Thai Noodles (13.99). In Suan’s interpretation, it is a delightfully neutral affair that caresses the taste buds and convinces that the chef is serious about both his presentation and delivery. Another Thai tradition is Panang Sea Bass ($26.99). A red curry sauce and snipped fresh basil leaves join bell peppers in a dish that should have possessed more flavor and, at the price, more fish. The lingering taste was salt, which was applied with a heavy hand. Faring much better: A super delicious Anaconda Roll ($14.99), featuring lightly breaded tempura shrimp, asparagus, avocado, scallions, roe, with sesame seeds topped with eel. A definite winner that tastes much better than it sounds. Trust us on this one. For those in the mood for rice, you can do no better than Four-Friend Fried Rice ($13.99), combining shrimp, beef, pork and chicken, each with a distinct flavor that competes for your attention. This well-portioned platter allows for plenty to share. That is much of the fun here at Suan—the sharing part. The restaurant has an enormous menu that moves smoothly through appetizers (don’t miss the Soft Shell Crab in a ponzu sauce at $9.99 or the Gyoza—everyone’s favorite pork dumplings served in a sesame sauce at $6.49); the Lobster (our favorite has always been Lob-

F
ilmmaker and writer Pawel Pawlikowski has a talent for presenting unforgettable female characters such as young lesbian Tamsin – played by Emily Blunt (!) – in “My Summer of Love.” The same holds true for the titular character in “Ida” (Music Box Films). About a week before orphanturned-novitiate nun Anna (Agata Trzebuchowska) is set to take her vows at a Polish convent, she is summoned to the Mother Superior’s office and encouraged to venture into the city and meet with Wanda (Agata Kulesza), an aunt who is her only living relative. Initially, Wanda is cold and distant. She is not above trying to shock Anna, with words and deeds, beginning with asking if Anna is a “Jewish nun.” From the expression on Anna’s face, the news comes as a complete surprise. But Wanda’s not done yet. She tells Anna her real name is Ida and provides sketchy details about her parents who died during World War II. The atheist/communist Wanda, aka Red Wanda by her Party pals, wants to be a corrupting influence on Anna, but agrees to accompany her to the town where her parents died. At this point, “Ida” becomes a road movie, with the two diametrically opposed characters traveling together, dealing with the police (Wanda is arrested and spends the night in a cell after driving drunk), picking up a hot hitchhiking sax player named Lis (Dawid Ogrodnik) and attempting to track down the man who “inherited” Ida’s family’s farm during the war—a man who may be the only person who can provide the details of how the family died.
A smart, risqué wordsmith, who hid how bright she was under the floppy hat and mismatched clothing costume she donned in character, which in essence gave her license to speak her mind. Alternately funny and serious and extremely informative, “Moms Mabley” makes for good Pride month entertainment.
A Moms Mabley The use of stark, gorgeous and bleak black and white film not only places the film in the early 1960s, but is fitting for the subject matter in which everything might not be, well, black and white. Exquisite to look at, even in the scenes when you may find yourself looking away, “Ida” is definitely a film for which it would be wise to have tissues nearby. The performances, particularly those of the two female leads, are stellar and riveting.“Ida” is very strongly recommended.
F
or her documentarian directorial debut, actress/comedian/activist Whoopi Goldberg chose the late comedy legend Moms Mabley. Goldberg’s doc, “Moms Mabley: The Original Queen of Comedy” (HBO Home Entertainment) begins with the premise that Mabley, who died in
1975 at 81, had a profound impact on Goldberg, and then proceeds to give examples of comedians and others on whom her effect was equally great. Goldberg herself interviewed a wide cross-section of comedians and performers, including Kathy Griffin, Eddie Murphy, Quincy Jones, Anne Meara, Jerry Stiller, Joan Rivers, Arsenio Hall, Robert Klein, Dick Cavett, Kaye Ballard, Bill Cosby, Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte and Debbie Allen among them. However, it’s the vintage Mabley performance footage that does the best job of fleshing out the portrait. From her humble beginnings on the “chitlin’ circuit” to her success at the Apollo Theater and later on television and in film, Mabley’s popularity lasted for more than 40 years, with her greatest successes occurring near the end of her life.
wakened by a “glittering stranger” at three years old, Broughton met his “angel” who offered him the gifts of intuition, articulation and merriment, culminating in a kind of big joy. Hence the title of Eric Slade, Stephen Silha and Dawn Logsdon’s doc “Big Joy: The Adventures of James Broughton” (Kino Lorber). A West Coast bohemian, Broughton’s films were a way for him to see what his dreams looked like--“to make them real.” Poet Neeli Cherkovski calls Broughton “an outsider’s outsider, under the underground.” Broughton, who lived “the pleasures of the flesh” and said things such as “when in doubt, twirl,” survived a difficult California childhood with an abusive mother. But he came into his own during the 1947 San Francisco Renaissance, the artistic revolution, the soil from which the Beats grew, led by Jack Spicer, Robert Duncan, Madeline Gleason, Kenneth Rexroth and Broughton. Unable to live his dream to be a dancer (Broughton admitted to not being graceful enough in a 1998 interview), he turned his attention first to writing, co-creating the Festival of Modern Poetry in 1947. Around this time, the bisexual Broughton began a relationship
and extended versions, an exclusive music video and more.

scar-winning filmmaker Roger Ross Williams’ awardwinning doc “God Loves Uganda” (First Run Features) reveals a plague more insidious than HIV/AIDS currently ravaging Africa for which there are no pharmaceuticals-- American evangelicals preaching their gospel of lies and hate. According to one source, “something frightening” is happening in Uganda with the “potential to destroy” it. “Coming from the outside,” it’s important to send it back, but the “fire has already been set.” The Kansas City, Missiouri-based International House of Prayer, started in1999 and led missionary force and relentless yeller Lou Engle, sends young and impressionable
Christian soldiers (such a peaceful image, no?) to do his dirty work in Uganda. The relationship between American conservatives and Africa is powerful in Uganda where religion is used to demonize and kill. Post-Amin Uganda was ripe for the picking and American evangelicals seized the opportunity to replace one kind of fanaticism with another. Now there are Ugandan street preachers on corners and wading through the traffic-jammed streets, shouting competitively to be heard. Interviews with American missionaries, including the extremely butch “ex-lesbian” Joanna Watson, paint a frightening picture of the future of Uganda. Difficult to watch, but well-worth seeing “God Loves Uganda” includes bonus shorts and deleted scenes among its DVD special features.

id you ever read a book and think, “Gee, this sounds like someone’s master’s thesis”? Writer/director Cindy L. Abel’s brief doc “Breaking Through: Out of the Closet, Into the Halls of Power” (Breaking Glass) has that similar feel to
it. Featuring interviews with high profile queer politicians including former Massachusetts Representative Barney Frank, Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin and Houston Mayor Annise Parker, the doc gives voice to its subjects’ early years and family life, coming out processes, the adversity they faced, running for office and finally, time spent in office. Abel’s doc shines a light on ongoing issues of importance such as bullying and raises important questions, such as what attention does coming out bring to a person with political aspirations? But by the end, with its closing sequence focusing on same-sex marriage, it feels rushed and suddenly unfocused, more like a promo video than a doc short. with Pauline Kael (of film criticism fame) and discovered a new life as filmmaker. Beginning with his short film “Mother’s Day”, Broughton became a leading experimental filmmaker. He went on to receive the Poetic Film Award at the Cannes Film Festival, presented to him by his hero Jean Cocteau. “Big Joy” is a joyful portrait of an artist, a writer, a teacher, a filmmaker, a father, a lover, a Radical Faerie, and a man whose far-reaching impact is still felt today.

hile Atlanta’s Pride festival doesn’t take place until October, you might want to head up there for a long weekend at the end of June and catch Rainbow Days at Six Flags Over Georgia on June 28. It’s just a little over an eighthour drive to Atlanta. Round trip airfares from Fort Lauderdale run about $250-$300 and it’s about a two-hour flight. By the time you figure the two hours at the airport before your flight, you’re not saving much time (and that’s if there are no delays), so driving is a real consideration. Rainbow Days at Six Flags Over Georgia ticket packages are available and range from $49.99, which is the same as general park admission, but also includes free parking, entry into the private Pavilion area for entertainment, an all-you-can-eat buffet and entry to the water park (good until August 31, if you want to make a whole weekend of it). The general admission ticket is $35.99. To purchase the official T-shirt, only available on-line, go to http://www. rainbowdaysatsixflags.com/#!rainbow-daysstore/c251y. Rainbow Days is produced by a private, for-profit corporation and the

event is not a benefit for any GLBT agency. For more information, go to http://www. rainbowdaysatsixflags.com/ Of course, if you’re going up to Atlanta, you’re going to want to do other things as well, including bar-hopping. Atlanta’s main gayborhood is Midtown and it has no shortage of GLBT bars and clubs. For the leather crowd, there the legendary Eagle. If you prefer your guys undressed, there’s also a Swinging Richards in town. Mixx is good for dancing, Blake’s on the Park is a friendly neighborhood bar, and Burkhart’s Pub has performances and dancing on the main floor. If your preference is for quieter areas, head out to the patio or the upper level, and the food here is way better than it needs to be. Bulldog’s spins house and hip-hop and the drinks are strong, Xion is a members only, after-hours club and is only

open Sundays from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Atlanta is a foodie’s heaven where you can find anything from haute cuisine to finger licking BBQ. Cowtippers is all about comfort food. Beware; the enormous Texas Margaritas are deadly. Roxx may not draw the young ’uns, but the burgers and chili are killer and Sunday brunch is a hot ticket. Buckhead puts an upscale twist on diner fare, with prices to match. Doc Chey’s is a mini-chain featuring Asian favorites, with locations throughout the Atlanta area. Eats is a favorite budget spot serving healthy fast food ranging from jerk and BBQ chicken with sweet potatoes, collards, and hot mac n’ cheese to fettuccine Alfredo and fresh vegetarian dishes. For a bit of sight-seeing, check out Piedmont Park, right in Midtown, shop at Atlantic Station or visit The High
Museum of Art, with more than 13,000 modern and contemporary works of art. Frankly my dear, no visit to Atlanta is complete without a visit to the Margaret Mitchell House, where most of “Gone With the Wind” was written. If you’re going for stay in Midtown, you’ve got a number of choices from upscale hotels (W Atlanta Midtown, Hyatt Regency Atlanta) to the boutique Ellis Hotel to B&B options (Stonehurst Place and Hello, both come highly recommended). If you’re looking for something cruisey, check out the Cheshire Motor Inn. Rather rough it and save some dough? River’s Edge gay campground isn’t too far out of town. The Embassy Suites at the airport is the host hotel for Rainbow Days and is offering special rates, use the promo code: RBD. Enjoy!
