Dean Trantalis (l to r), George Castrataro and Mikey Verdugo at Protest March on Hollywood City Hall.

Approximately 60 people turned out to support former openly-gay Hollywood Police officer Michael “Mikey” Verdugo in front of the Hollywood City Hall on Wednesday, October 20, 2010. The protesters were there to support not only Verdugo but passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), a Federal law that would make workplace discrimination illegal nationwide. “We were in front of city hall,” said Verdugo’s attorney, George Castrataro, “then they moved us off to the northeast side of the property near the library behind the air conditioner ventilation. They claimed it was for the group’s safety and welfare.” Castrataro admitted that he got into a yelling match with the police that may have been caught by a videographer. “I hope the video didn’t come out,” joked Castrataro. The protesters themselves were mostly dressed in purple in recognition of national day of protest against gay bullying and in memory of the youths that

War on Gay and Lesbian Soldiers By DMITRY RASHNITSOV On October 12, gay and lesbian military personnel serving in the United States Armed Services all over the world were finally able to breath a sigh of relief that they wouldn’t lose their job if they were outed. However, the past week and a half has been more stressful in the fight to repeal, ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ than the previous 17 years of the policies existence. The Log Cabin Republicans, a group that works within the Republican Party to advocate equal rights for all Americans filed suit in federal district

court against "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in 2004. The case went to trial in Riverside, California in July of 2010, and Judge Virginia Phillips ruled on September 9, 2010 that the policy violated the First and Fifth Amendments of the Constitution. On October 12, Judge Phillips granted a world-wide injunction against enforcement of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." "After finding in Log Cabin Republicans v. United States that 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' violates service members' First and Fifth Amendment rights, a world-wide injunction was the only

JustUsBoys.com Makes Donation DENVER, CO- The JustUsBoys website recently made headlines when Rutgers University student, Tyler Clementi, posted on the website's message boards asking for advice in the final hours leading up to his tragic suicide. The outpouring from the public regarding the kind of role a gay community plays in helping to avert isolation of gay youth was not lost on the owner of JustUsBoys who wanted to find a way

Justin Bieber to do more than provide a safe place to talk. JustUsBoys is seeking to raise funds and awareness for the Matthew Shepard Foundation, an organization created by Matthew's family to raise awareness and promote human dignity for everyone by engaging school, corporations and individuals. The goal at JUB is to raise $10,000 for the Matthew Shepard Foundation, then match those donations with a corporate donation of another $10,000. Since Matthew's senseless death, countless more young gay men and women have been the victims of violent crime and harassment simply because they were different. Many hate crimes go unreported, and the bullying and harassment doesn't stop. H

Breast Cancer Treatments Third in the Series Recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month By BOB KECSKEMETY Thanks to improvements in treatment and early detection, millions of women are surviving breast cancer today. This information briefly represents the views of the doctors and nurses serving on the American Cancer Society's Cancer Information Database Editorial Board. These views are based on their interpretation of studies published in medical journals, as well as their own professional experience. Your doctor may have reasons for suggesting a treatment plan different from these general treatment options. Don't hesitate to ask him or her questions about your treatment options. Treatments can be classified into broad groups, based on how they work and when they are used. Local therapy is intended to treat a tumor at the site without affecting the rest of the body. Surgery and radiation therapy are examples of local therapies. Systemic therapy refers to drugs which can be given by mouth or directly into the bloodstream to reach cancer cells anywhere in the body. Chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and targeted therapy are systemic therapies. Patients who have no detectable cancer after surgery are often given adjuvant (additional) systemic therapy. Doctors believe that in some cases cancer cells may break away from the pri-

mary breast tumor and begin to spread through the body by way of the bloodstream even in the early stages of the disease.

Surgery Most women with breast cancer have some type of surgery. Surgery is often needed to remove a breast tumor. Options for this include breast-conserving surgery and mastectomy. Breast reconstruction can be done at the same time as the mastectomy or done later on. Breast-conserving surgery is sometimes called partial mastectomy. It only removes a part of the affected breast, but how much is removed depends on the size and location of the tumor and other factors. Lumpectomy removes only the breast lump and a surrounding margin of normal tissue. Radiation therapy is usually given after a lumpectomy. For a quadrantectomy, one-quarter of the breast is removed. Radiation therapy is usually given after surgery. Mastectomy is surgery to remove the entire breast. All of the breast tissue is removed, sometimes along with other nearby tissues. In a Simple mastectomy, the surgeon removes the entire breast, including the nipple, but does not remove underarm lymph nodes or muscle tissue from beneath the breast. Sometimes this

According to witnesses, TMZ reported, Bieber was confronted by a 12-year old boy who kept calling Bieber a “faggot”. The boy then reached out toward Bieber who pushed the boy’s hand away. Beiber, a straight teenager, has since told friends that he never realized how hurtful comments like that could be. Police are currently investigating the incident but insist that Bieber was not the instigator. H

Obama: “Gay Not a Choice” NEW YORK, NY- Last week, President Barack Obama told a studio audience and the television viewers of an MTV town hall meeting that he felt that being gay was not a choice but genetic. “I don’t profess to be an expert,” the president said in response to a question on the matter. “I don’t think it’s a choice. I think people are born with a certain make up, and we’re all children of God.”

Cuomo: “I’ll Legalize Gay Marriage” NEW YORK, NY- Last week, Andrew Cuomo, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in New York stated that he will legalize same-sex marriage in the state if elected. “I don’t want to be the governor who just proposes marriage equality,” said Cuomo according to the New York Daily News. “I don’t want to be the governor who lobbies for marriage equality. I don’t want to be the governor who fights for marriage equality. I want to be the governor who signs the law that makes equality a reality in the state of New York.” A previous attempt to legalize same-sex marriage in New York died in the state’s Senate last year after it passed in the State Assembly. H

is done for both breasts (a double mastectomy), especially when it is done as preventive surgery in women at very high risk for breast cancer. For some women considering immediate reconstruction, a skin-sparing mastectomy can be done. In this procedure, most of the skin over the breast (other than the nipple and areola) is left intact. This can work as well as a simple mastectomy. In Radical mastectomy, the surgeon removes the entire breast, axillary lymph nodes and the pectoral muscles under the breast. This surgery was once very common, but it was found that a modified radical mastectomy was just as effective. For many, the thought of surgery can be frightening. But with a better understanding of what to expect before, during, and after the operation, many fears can be relieved. The common biopsy procedures let you find out if you have breast cancer within a few days of your biopsy, but the extent of the breast cancer will not be known until after imaging tests and the surgery for local treatment are done. Usually, you meet with your surgeon a few days before the operation to discuss the procedure. This is a good time to ask specific questions about the surgery and review potential risks. Be sure you understand what the extent of the surgery is likely to be and what you should expect afterward. If you are thinking about breast reconstruction, ask about this as well.

high-energy rays or particles that destroy cancer cells. This treatment may be used to kill any cancer cells that remain in the breast, chest wall, or underarm area after breast-conserving surgery. Radiation may also be needed after mastectomy in patients with either a cancer larger than 5 cm in size, or when cancer is found in the lymph nodes. External beam radiation is the most common type of radiation therapy for women with breast cancer. The radiation is focused from a machine outside the body on the area affected by the cancer. Brachytherapy, also known as internal radiation, is another way to deliver radiation therapy. Instead of aiming radiation beams from outside the body, radioactive seeds or pellets are placed directly into the breast tissue next to the cancer. It is often used as a way to add an extra boost of radiation to the tumor site (along with external radiation to the whole breast), although it may also be used by itself.

Chemotherapy Chemotherapy is treatment with cancer-killing drugs that may be given intravenously or by mouth. The drugs travel through the bloodstream to reach cancer cells in most parts of the body. Chemo is given in cycles, with each period of treatment followed by a recovery period. Treatment usually lasts for several months.

“Wicked Weekend” Ready to Roll didn’t want to organize “Wicked Manors” again and Wilton Manors Main Street offered to do it. Immediately after Stonewall, the PGFL board cancelled any plans for the large street party which attracted up to 20,000 people last year. “The difference is having the ability to charge for an event,” said Tabor referring to PrideFest organized by Pride South Florida, which annually charges a fee to attend. “There is no Santa Claus.” The question is: how do you charge for such an open event on Wilton Drive? “Halloween is Halloween,” concluded Tabor, “and it’s going to be successful whether or not we close the street.”

HOMICIDE: INFORMATION NEEDED

“WICKED WEEKEND” This year, it’s “Wicked Weekend” on Wilton Drive which is to be held from Friday, February 29 to Sunday, February 30. Also, unlike previous years, Wilton Drive will not be closed to automobile traffic. Events will be held along Wilton Drive in the parking lots and inside the various bars. “We had planned to expand from last year,” said Tom Tabor of Wilton Manors Main Street, the organization which brought the businesses along The Drive together to plan a Halloween festival, “Until we found out how much everything costs.” Tabor said it would cost around $35,000 just to close the street. Tabor also said that they considered having the bars located on Wilton Drive have street-side bars, something which is not normally permitted. But the City of Wilton Manors gave approval to this plan and the bars would split the costs of closing the street. But there was a lack of time and funds. The businesses on The Drive did come up with a combined $15,000 to provide additional police and security service for the events. This also paid for additional public restrooms for the weekend, parking at Fort Lauderdale High School and a free shuttle service from the satellite parking lots to the festival. The city is providing traffic cones at the crosswalks and the large flashing message signs on both ends of the street and additional lighting. No money is being spent on street decorations unless the bars provide them individually. Alibi, Bill’s and Boom will be having an outdoor entertainment stage to be located in the parking lot of the Shoppes of Wilton Manors. This will be at their expense. On the north end of Wilton Drive, Tabor said that the “Triangle” of New Moon, Matty’s and Rosie’s are working together but he didn’t know what their plans were. Last year’s “Wicked Manors” was organized by Pride of Greater Fort Lauderdale but they lost $30,000 at this past June’s Stonewall Street Festival and Parade despite the high attendance. In April of this year, some of the board members of PGFL expressed that they

NGLTF URGES “YES” ON AMENDMENTS The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force is urging the LGBT community to vote “YES” on Amendments 5 and 6 in the upcoming General Election to be held on November 2. (Early voting has already started.) These two amendments pertain to redistricting the state of Florida. The truth is redistricting is critical in shaping policies that directly affect LGBT people. Conducted once every 10 years, redistricting — the process of redrawing congressional and legislative district boundaries to reflect population changes — is critical in determining the makeup of our country’s governing bodies. And the degree of support and opposition to LGBT-related legislation will be determined by the redrawing of district lines. “Basically, if we are not involved, we let our elected officials choose their voters … and that's not how democracy is supposed to work,” said the NGLTF in a written release. “Redistricting matters because it is the single most important factor in determining whether a Republican or a Democrat is likely to be elected in a particular district.” –BK

Protestors Support Former Cop VERDUGO continued from Page 1 had recently committed suicide. In addition to Castrataro was attorney Dean Trantalis and a Nova Law School professor with several of his students. Eventually the protesters were permitted to enter the Commission Chambers of City Hall while the commission meeting was in progress but the protesters were not allowed to protest or even carry their signs. Verdugo felt the protest was a success. “I’m still trying to get my message out there,” said Verdugo. “one of my support-

War on DADT DADT continued from Page 1 reasonable solution," said Christian Berle, Deputy Executive Director of Log Cabin Republicans. "These soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coast guardsmen sacrifice so much in defense of our nation and our Constitution. It is imperative that their constitutional freedoms be protected as well. This decision is also a victory for all who support a strong national defense. No longer will our military be compelled to discharge service members with valuable skills and experience because of an archaic policy mandating irrational discrimination. The United States is stronger because of this injunction, and the Log Cabin Republicans is proud to have brought the case that made it possible." President Barack Obama had long campaigned for the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and continues to say that he wants the law overturned by congress, but his administration has decided to appeal Judge Phillip’s injunction to a higher court. “First of all, I haven’t ‘mentioned’ that I’m against ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ I have said very clearly, including in a State of the Union address, that I’m against ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and that we’re going to end this policy. That’s point number one,” President Obama stated during the MTV-BET “Youth Town Hall” meeting October 14 at BET Networks studio in Washington, D.C. “Point number two, the difference between my position right now and Harry Truman’s was that Congress explicitly passed a law that took away the power of the executive branch to end this policy unilaterally. So this is not a situation in which, with a stroke of a pen, I can simply end the policy.” While President Obama’s pen seems to have run out of ink, lawyers at the Justice department have had time to type up responses to Judge Phillips and continue to fight her decision. They plan on taking the case to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit in San Francisco and, ultimately, the U.S. Supreme Court. "The farther the decision gets from the

ers said that discrimination is the adult version of bullying.” Verdugo was also pleased that one of the Hollywood city commissioners spoke, off the agenda, when seeing the large group wearing the purple shirts, that she felt that discrimination in any form was wrong. H presentation of evidence in the trial court, the more likely it is that courts will assume the military must have some critically important interest at stake," said Diane Mazur, a law professor who opposes the policy. Nearly 14,000 troops have been fired since the policy’s enactment. The Pentagon has come out and stated that they will have difficulty with complying with the DADT injunction. “Requiring the Department to cease all enforcement of DADT, immediately and worldwide, will cause significant disruptions to the force in the short term,” a statement from the Pentagon said. The Pentagon also suggested that it has not provided the troops with any training to prepare for the suspension of the ban. Since the Judge’s ruling there have been no incidents filed relating to Unit cohesion problems, disciplinary problems, resignations, or privacy problems relating to openly-gay troops. A recent survey of armed services personal said that 2/3 of them believed that someone in their unit is gay, so training troops is probably more of an excuse than an actual problem that the army will realistically have to deal with. For those banking on DADT being repealed during the lame-duck Congress session after the elections where the Democrats are expected to have their last chance at a majority Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz) has already come out and publicly stated that he will filibuster any attempt to repeal DADT. “I will filibuster or stop it from being brought up until we have a thorough and complete study of the effect on morale and battle effectiveness,” McCain said. The former presidential candidate said in 2006 that he would support a repeal of DADT. Is it old age or his maverick ways that have caused McCain to forget what he once stood for? While congressmen, the president, judges, attorneys and civil rights groups continue the DADT fight in a courtroom and through paperwork, real closeted gay and lesbian troops all over the world must sit and wait to see what the outcome of all of this legal wrangling will be, while living in fear that someone with a vendetta against them may out them for no reason and cause a good person to needlessly lose their job. Can You Hear Me Now? Hello, My name is Paul Cote and I’m a 25-year old gay male from the Portland, Maine area. I was brought up very differently from a lot of other young gay people that I have spoken with. My mother and father are both homosexual. Had you asked me about my family life up until recently, with all of the anti-gay acts that have happened; I would have said that we are just like every other American family. I am saddened that today; in the most amazing county in the world, I have been made to feel like a second-class citizen. This has happened in large part due to the leaders of this county. The people that we have asked to represent us, but now I ask you who are they are actually representing? I used to think that the reason people were so scared of the gays and lesbians was a lack of knowledge, which, in some situations, still holds true. Children are born with a non-biased opinion of others — full of love and willing to give it to anyone. But the adult influences in their lives taint them. They are taught disrespect, hate and be violent. These are the things we say we are not about and that we want to do better by our children than our parents have done to us. However, for example, when a show about two gay men, that are just trying to live their own American dream comes on TV, we have to change the channel. We deem this show to be “not fit for children.” How does a child know it’s wrong? They don’t! How does a child know that the love between the two men is “false” or just “lust” or something the bible says is an “abomination?” They don’t! How do they know that a child with two men as parents will not grow up to be normal, functioning, great person in our county? How about the little girl that sits next to them in their class who has two dads? Again, they don’t! A child with gay parents has to learn that their home life is not “normal” and must not be talked about. As the child is

talking with his/her friends and the friends want to come to his/her house after school to play, the child becomes nervous and must think of reasons why this can’t happen. If the kids at school were to find out about his/her two dads, would the teasing ever end? If the other children found out that their friend had two dads, he/she would not only be the most talked about kid at school but also the most hated. Why? Because when the kids got home and told their parents the boy or girl in their class has two dads, what will the parents say? How many parents are going to openly explain to their child what "gay" is? Will they take the time to express compassion while they explain it is just another normal family? It is my opinion, this is not true-to-life as we know it. The parents will become uncomfortable, feel awkward and say that they will talk about it later or not discuss it at all. Worse are the parents that not only don’t explain what gay is but teach to hate gays. How the child is not a good person because her dad is gay. I can not speak for all children with gay parents; however I can speak for myself. My mother took her gay pride sticker off her car so that no one I went to school with would know that she was gay. How much pride is in that? None! Once again, proving yes, gay is okay — if you hide it. I once believed that America was moving in the right direction; that one day soon all Americans, gay and straight, would be treated equal. I take my hat off to the states that said yes to gay marriage and all the rights that come with that. Gays people are just as valuable as any other person; but in resent times, DADT did not pass because gays are not good enough to serve our county, which make it hard to protect us. Even though we have been there the whole time; where college students act out of hate to broadcast over the internet a roommate in a gay sexual act that was intended to be a private moment, that

Paul Cote this would be the demise of a bright young gay male. Or that a well known rap star would say, "If you’re a man and you’re over 25 and you don't eat pu**y, just kill yourself, damn it. The world will be a better place. LOL." Why is this okay? Why do we allow this? Why can’t you here our voices? Why are we not fighting harder? Today, I have had enough. I feel like I have watched all of this happen and haven't stepped into the ring to take my turn and winning equality for all gay, straight, bisexual, and transgendered citizens of this county. It is not okay to scream “faggot” or “dyke” at us when we walk down the street. It is not okay to hit us, push us or abuse us! It is not okay for anyone to treat us like we are less of a person. It is not okay that we have been second class citizens to the rest of this county. This anti-gay movement needs to stop. It is unfounded and unjustified. We demand it, we have the right to it and we will have it! Can you hear me now?

Letters to the Editor “FORMER DEMOCRAT” - REVISITED Well-stated, Peter Ryskewecz. You are not alone in the gay wilderness bemoaning the dangerous and financially destructive Omaba policies. Couldn't have written it better myself.

Tim Martin The letter in your last edition from an ex-Democrat is not very circumspect and full of untruthful statements and innuendoes. In fact, it is more of a rant than a discussion of fact. To start with, Europe is not socialist. I lived in Switzerland, Germany, and Norway for twenty-five years. Those are three countries that treat their Gay and Lesbian citizens much better than our country treats us. Yes, I had national health care and it was wonderful. I was able to concentrate on my job and studies and not worry about my insurance. The same holds for pensions, which will benefit me even though I have now moved home to the USA. When I am 65, I will start to draw pension payments in Euros. It is about time that Americans stop bashing Europe, a continent that is one of our strongest allies. I watch French and German news on PBS and these slurs do not go unheard there. Europeans are frustrated as to why so many Americans disdain them. If the writer

thinks that the United States can stand alone, he should reflect on the fact that we make up a little less than 5% of the total world population. In short, we need friends. The writer claims that our president has raised his taxes. This is not true. There has been no rise in federal taxes. What is being proposed is that the taxes that the very rich pay should return to the level that they were at a decade ago. That would raise taxes on those earning over $250,000 a year, about what I earn in five years as a college professor. The writer bemoans Florida’s situation. I must remind him that we have had a Republican governor and a majority in the state legislature in Tallahassee for almost 12 years. It is hardly the fault of the Democrats (which I am not). In my field, education, the state has continuously cut funding since the Republicans came into office. The stimulus saved my job and I am grateful for that. If it is true that the Republican Party is so Gay-friendly, why do most of their politicians vote against us and our needs? Just last week the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell bill’s being eliminated was stopped by a clear partisan vote with the Republicans voting en bloc to retain it. As an independent I do not feel that I am in any way being coerced in my vote. In fact, I find the get out the vote efforts

OCTOBER 21, 2010

in the Gay community to be rather insipid and weak. I have the impression that few of my friends actually vote. Inasmuch, I see little pressure by either party to get my vote.

Robb Kvasnak, Ed. D. "What will we learn from this year's elections?" Not all Gays believe that they can not support and integrate today's GOP. There are two Gay GOP Clubs in South Florida, and both are attended by many of the high-profile, even religious, conservative Republican candidates. The GOP is definitely changing regarding Gays. In California, the victorious lead lawyer, Ted Olsen (Google him), in charge of overturning Proposition 8, which denies same-sex marriage, is a conservative Republican. He represented George Bush in Bush v. Gore before the Supreme Court in a 2000 decision that decided that election. A few months ago this "right-winger" won a monumental victory for Gays and for "marriage equality"! Not surprising then, that many Gays will quietly vote Republican this November. Frankly, Gay Republicans have it right: The gay press and political class are not very honest with the GLBT community and want us to remain forever paranoid of exaggerated GOP homophobia. Yet roughly half or more of Republicans now support "civil unions", and support GLBT non-discrimination in the work place. Today's GOP routinely welcomes Gays into their Big Tent in every major

9

metropolitan area in this country. And, yes, many Gays want repeal of much of Obamacare, resent being in a position where half of their federal taxes go simply to marginally pay the interest on the $1,300,000,000 national debt, and don't believe the new Democratic Party line that Obama saved us from a Depression. Most gays only want more employers and reasonably secure jobs to return to Florida, not more people on food stamps in record numbers. Obama has hopelessly mismanaged the bad situation of "Big Government a la George W. Bush," only to worsen it with even more "Goliath Size Government". He borrowed $800 billion from the Chinese, $700 billion from the Japanese, and $400 billion from the Saudis; and yet unemployment has doubled since the Democrats have run the Congress. Now Obama admits, to the New York Times, that he blew it and is guilty of "perverse pride" in his economic and health care policy decisions (his words). The only thing Obama has done right is to keep the Bush time-table to pull back in Iraq and to bring at least half of the combat troops home. Bottom line: While most Gays will continue, reflexively, to vote Democratic in this election, we will learn that an increasing, elucidated block of Gays will vote Republican; even if some, in the Gay press and in the Gay political establishment, will disparage it and will not acknowledge it.

DAN BASSETT: A LIFE OF MUSIC Recently, local musician and conductor, Dan Bassett was named by the Miami Herald as one of twenty local artists under the age of forty who are already making an impact in the arts in South Florida. Only four of the artists chosen were musicians and Bassett was the only gay-affiliated artist. Bassett has been the conductor of the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, based in Fort Lauderdale, for five years. Recently I caught up with Bassett to talk about their upcoming 25th anniversary concert. The band’s concert will be held on November 6 and is titled “The Classics” and will also feature a holiday concert on December 15 with the Pride Jazz Ensemble and the Fort Lauderdale Women’s Chorus. In Bassett’s words “expect to be incredibly entertained with some of the most challenging music we’ve performed. I am

so proud of the Wind Ensemble ... prepare for a fantastic evening.” The event will once again be held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. In addition to the wind ensemble, Bassett also conducts the South Florida Pride Jazz Ensemble and Marching Band. Among Bassett’s biggest accomplishments was a national conference of gay and lesbian bands in New Orleans in the fall of 2009. As artistic director he conducted a 180 piece concert band and coordinated the first Lesbian Gay Band Association (LGBA) Honor Jazz Ensemble with six-

time Grammy Award-winner, Gary Burton as guest soloist and John Mahoney of Loyola University as conductor. In addition to conducting, Bassett is also an accomplished trumpeter. He has been a featured soloist with the Singing Sons Boychoir, Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, MCC Sunshine Cathedral and South Florida Wind Ensemble. As church musician, he spent fourteen years at the MCC Sunshine Cathedral as trumpeter and instrumental coordinator.

Twisted Tom Baked Stuffed Chicken with Halloween Surprise This recipe is perfect for people who are not sure how to tell when poultry is thoroughly cooked yet not dried out. Give this a try for a “special” Halloween treat. 6-7 lb. chicken, 1 cup melted butter, 1 cup stuffing (Pepperidge Farm is good), 1 cup uncooked popcorn, (Orville Redenbacher’s low fat), salt and pepper to taste. Preheat oven to 350 degrees, brush chicken well with melted butter then salt, and pepper. Fill cavity with stuffing and popcorn. Place in baking pan with the neck end toward the back of the oven then listen for the popping sounds. When the chicken's ass blows the oven door open and the chicken flies across the room, it is done. (And, you thought I couldn't cook.) Halloween is just a few days away, (October 31st) and since this year it falls on a Sunday, many are celebrating the entire weekend. So, if you work it just right you can party Friday and Saturday and Sunday — the real night of Halloween. (This could require a lot of different costumes since you don’t want to be seen in the same costume twice.) Most Central Florida bars and clubs will have their own parties or cos- Twisted Tom

CAT 5 Places 5th at Nationals By DAVID DONAHUE The South Florida Category 5 Flag Football Team just returned from participating in the 10th annual National Gay Flag Football Championships, Gay Bowl X, hosted by the Phoenix Hellraisers in Phoenix, Arizona. This was their 5th year competing in the tournament, against teams from all over the country. This year, 26 teams from 21 cities including New York City, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Denver, Boston, Atlanta, Chicago competed in this tenth anniversary of the tourCAT 5 nament. Cat 5 finished with a 3-3 record having played eventual 5th place finishers, the Phoenix Hellraisers and the 3rd place San Deigo Toros as well as second-year participants, San Antonio in opening round-robin play. They finished 19th over all, beating San Antonio, Phoenix's 3rd team, the 7th ranked Michigan Panthers and losing to eventual consolation bracket champions, Salt Lake City. The tenth anniversary of the Gay Bowl featured plenty of firsts, including the inaugural Spirit Cup given to the team that

central beat sports tume contests. Judging from many of our recent letters and emails, this is the “year of the vampire.” Many of our readers plan to wear costumes from the Vampire Diaries, the Twilight Saga. Others want to dress as Lady Gaga, Cher, Justin Bieber or Kanye West and Taylor Swift. If you have a more political interest, you could dress as Governor Charlie Crist, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, or President Obama. Whether you want to be a horny devil, Dolly Parton, Cinderella or the Wicked Witch, I suggest you make your plans and reservations now! The award “embodies what every Gay Bowl should be about: sportsmanship, camaraderie, building friendships, developing sister teams, participating in all Gay Bowl events and displaying pride in your team.” Cat 5 won the award and their quarterback, Gary Schrader, dressed in drag, accepted the award on the team’s behalf. The tournament also welcomed the induction of the first-class of the National Gay Flag Football League Hall of Fame. A new shuttle service has been established connecting South Beach to Ft. Lauderdale/Wilton Manors. The new service starts this weekend. Both areas are known for their LGBT night life but many believe that driving between the two areas, though only around 25 miles apart, can be inherently dangerous and, if drinking, illegal. Night Owl, a new service started by nightlife impresarios Diego Aguilar and Luke Hobbs, will transport local partiers between the two cities while they enjoy complimentary cocktails. This impressive new service is as cheap as a half tank of gas, and includes some amazing perks: free drinks on the shuttle, one free cocktail at the venue of your choice, complimentary admission to many bars/clubs, no drinking and driving and no parking hassle. To sign up for the first night of service, Friday, October 22, 2010, go to their website, www.GoNightOwl.com, to make a reservation and press the “Buy Now” on the right. You can use your favorite credit card: Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and Discover. In Miami Beach, you can use Night Owl to go to Score, MOVA Lounge, Palace, Twist, Bar 721, Buck 15, Lupa Di Roma, De Leo. In Fort Lauderdale, you can go to George’s Alibi, Matty’s on the Drive, Rosie’s Bar and Grill, Galanga, Sidelines Sports Bar, Bill’s Filling Station, The Manor, Living Room, Johnny’s and Boardwalk.H

WICKED WEEKEND 2010 Wilton Manors Main Street, Inc. (WMMS), in conjunction with an events council consisting of representatives from all the bars along Wilton Drive, will hold an expanded series of Halloween events this year along Wilton Drive. Beginning Thursday, October 28th through Sunday, October 31st, the bars will be hosting various events each day under the unified nautical theme, “FantaSea Island.” “We’re anticipating this year to be larger and better than ever,” said Doug Blevins, President of WMMS. “However, we also want to make the public aware of some changes, in particular that Wilton Drive will be open to traffic this year. We are working closely with the city and the bars on ‘The Drive’ to make certain that the events are both safe and successful.” Anticipating the largest crowd on Saturday night, additional parking with on-site security will be provided at Fort Lauderdale High School, Equality Park, the city parking lot on Dixie Highway, Hagen and SunTrust Bank with complimentary shuttle service to and from The Drive. More convenience facilities and security to assist the City of Wilton Manors will be provided, co-sponsored by Wilton Manors Main Street and all participating bar members: Rosie’s Bar & Grill, New Moon, Matty’s on the Drive, The Manor, Bill’s, Alibi, Boom, Sidelines and Tropics.H

Queenshead Eurobar & Restaurant By KEITH CHAMLEE If you were to Google “Queenshead Pub” you would find one in just about every village in Great Britain and every major city throughout the world. For the most part, you will find them set in a traditional Victorian setting complete with deep rich mahogany shelves. Sports, bangers and mash (or fish and chips) served alongside a pint of ale seem to be the normal fare. When owners Darren Conner and Paul Smith opened their Queenshead Gastro Pub, 'normal' was not what they intended to offer. Located at 2501 Central Avenue in the Grand Central District of downtown St. Petersburg, this distinguished and elegantly appointed dining spot is just the place to frequent whether you are entertaining friends or out for a nice dinner for two. With ample seating at the spacious bar; dining alone (as I did) isn't a bad idea either. You will find it difficult to locate a more inviting patio. The staff is extremely attentive and friendly. Conner and Smith take a 'hands on' approach which adds to the relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. I took one look at the menu and knew that I was in for a real treat. No 'pub grub' here. Executive Chef Chris Greer offers a creative menu with a wide variety to suit everyone's taste. I opted to start with the seared scallops served with Brussels sprouts and cherry wood smoked bacon and for a main course chose the balsamic glazed beef filet accompanied by sautéed spring onions, thyme mash with a balsamic port reduction. I stuck up a conversation with a regular customer seated next to me at the bar, Simon (it just so happens that he is from across the pond, too), after noticing the colorful salad in front of him. He assured me that the salads should not be overlooked. His choice: a blood orange and strawberry with baby spinach, goat cheese, red onion served with an aged balsamic reduction. Brilliant! For all the British pub die-hards out there, not to worry, you can find fish and chips and Shepherds Pie on the menu, too. The creativity doesn't end there. For dessert, I recom-

mend the Eton Mess — fresh strawberries, cream, meringue, candied lemon zest with basil sorbet. Enjoy a glass of wine or a pint of ale with your meal. One thing is for certain, combine ambience, quality and presentation of food, great service at a very reasonable price and you're sure to leave feeling as if you have gotten more 'bangers' for your buck! LONG LIVE THE QUEEN! Queenshead Gastro Pub, that is.

Pommes Boulangéres By JEAN DOHERTY/LE PATIO I’m Irish, I love potatoes; the French love potatoes; let’s face, it everyone loves potatoes. This particular recipe gets its name from a time in France when wood for cooking was in short supply, so the villagers would take their meals in pots along to the local Boulanger (baker) and have him cook them in the bread oven at the same time as the bread was being baked. The great thing about this recipe is that it’s almost impossible to screw up. It’s very simple and takes less than an hour to cook. The best way to cook this dish is in a wide, shallow baking dish or a lasagna dish or a flat cake tin will even do the trick. Ingredients: For 6 servings 2 lbs peeled potatoes cut into thin slices 2 medium yellow sweet onions peeled and cut into thin slices 2 pints beef or chicken stock (prepared in advance) Salted butter Black pepper, salt and a pinch of grated nutmeg Directions: Pre-heat the oven at 400°F Heat a frying pan with butter. When the butter is 'meunière' (has become light brown but not burned), pour the onions in and cook until golden

brown. Set aside. Then, using the same pan, add a tablespoon of olive oil and cook the spuds. After 7 to 8 minutes, put 1/3 of them into your oven dish, add little salt and pepper, cover them with 1/2 of the onions, put 1 pinch of grated nutmeg on them, then cover with more of the potatoes, then with the remaining 1/2 of the onions … then with the rest of the potatoes. (1/2 cup truffle shavings or a few drops of truffle oil will make it completely delectable … after all you’re the chef!) Pour in the stock gently so that it just comes to the top of the upper potato layer (not more). Put the dish in the oven and let it bake for approximately 50 minutes (when cooked, no liquid must remain visible because it must have made a bond between potatoes and onions). Serve yourself a glass of wine, you deserve it! This easy recipe is very interesting because you can serve it with almost anything.H
