In South Florida, Broward County School Board Chairwoman Jennifer Gottlieb fought to have the district honor National Day of Silence, the day that GLBT students use to peacefully protest anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) bullying, harassment, and name-calling. Gottlieb’s former near equivalent in the Midland School District in Pleasant Plains, Arkansas, however did not feel the same way. "I would disown my kids they were gay,” wrote former Midland School District Vice President Clint McCance on his Facebook wall. “They will not be welcome at my home or in my vicinity. I will absolutely run them off. Of course my kids will know better. My kids will have solid Christian beliefs. See it infects everyone.” McCance was angry because people he didn’t know on the internet were asking him to wear purple to help bring attention to the five gay teenagers who committed suicide in September after being bullied and harassed by classmates. “Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers killed themselves,” McCance wrote in his original ‘sin’ Facebook post. “The only way I’m wearin it for them is if they all commit

ELECTION RESULTS
Could Gays Lose Right to Adopt – Again? By BOB KECSKEMETY It appears the political pundits could have announced the final election results prior to Tuesday’s voting because all the pieces of the puzzle seemed to fall into their correct (or incorrect, depending on your point of view) place as predicted — like it or not. Unfortunately, recent equal rights gained in Florida by the LGBT community now are less certain — especially

the newly-gained right to adopt children. Both current Governor Charlie Crist and current Attorney General Bill McCollum have refused to challenge the court ruling permitting gay adoption in Florida. The same can’t be said for newly-elected Attorney General Pam Bondi (R) who said she would challenge the court decision and take that right away. Bondi ran against Dan Gelber (D) and won with 55% of the vote. Democrat Alex Sink barely lost her bid
to become Florida’s Governor to Republican Rick Scott by less than 2%. Scott too had said he would challenge gays’ right to adopt. Not surprising, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties were the last to finish counting their votes. Statewide, it was no surprise that Republican Marco Rubio won the U.S. Senate race with 49% of the vote with

Megachurch Pastor: “I’m Gay”
Brian Elliot CAMDEN, ME - There’s MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and soon, Friendfactor. But, Friendfactor has a twist. The idea is for gay individuals to post their profiles then ask their straight friends to join, not to support a cause, but to support their gay friends in their fight for equality. When a straight person supports one of their gay friends, they automatically send a digital alert to the page's owner — the same kind of social feedback as "liking" a Facebook status update. At a recent PopTech conference, Brian Elliot, 29, founder of Friendfactor said that straight people might not understand gay rights but they do understand friendships. He said that the site will tell people that, in these times of anti-gay bullying and gay suicide, the site strips away the issues and focuses on people. Elliot explained that the reinforcement tells gay people they're not alone at a time when gay suicides are making headlines. It also repositions the gay rights movement, stripping away most of the issues and focusing on people, just as other online networks have done successfully. “Gay friends are so much more important than gay rights,” he said in an interview at the PopTech conference, an event dedicated to social change and technology. Friendfactor will go live in coming weeks, although no specific launch date has been set. The two nonprofit groups that support Friendfactor have donated $500,000 in funding to get the site up and running and both Democrats and Republicans sit on his board. Elliot said he “didn't expect to become a professional gay,” but he thought the gay rights movement was missing a crucial component: straight people. H

Silley said his wife knew that he was gay and helped him keep the secret for over 20 years. He said it was his wife that urged him to come out. He said that the reason he finally made his announcement was due to the recent empidemic of gay suicides plaguing the young people in the U.S. H

Moore Backs Gay Couples as Parents LOS ANGELES, CA - Actress Julianne Moore told Sky News Online that it is best if a child is brought up by a two-parent family, whether it be a man and a woman or two women or two men. In her new film, The Kids Are All Right, she and Annette Bening play a gay couple whose lives are turned upside down when their children contact their biological father. Moore said, “I really think a two-parent family is the goal. I think whether they are men or women, or a man and a woman, it's all pretty good.” H

Election Results are In ELECTION RESULTS continued from Page 1 Governor Charlie Crist (I) coming in second with 30% and Representative Kendrick Meek (D) picking up the leftovers. These final results were representative of most of the state, however, in South Florida, the final results were an almost 3-way even split with Crist slightly ahead. Nationwide, after four years in the minority, Republicans have regained control of the U.S. House of Representative. Incomplete results show that Republicans gained 60 seats in the House and now have a 53 seat majority. In Florida, the most surprising House win was in District 22 where Tea Party-backed Alan West (R) won over incumbent Ron Klein (D) with 54% of the vote. Most of the rest of the state with a large LGBT communities was as pretty much expected. In District 18, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R) was returned to her seat with 69% of the vote. Despite her party affiliation, Ros-Lehtinen has been a supporter of gay rights and was endorsed, once again, by the SAVE-Dade PAC. LGBT-endorsed Ted Deutch (D) won with 63%, and District 20’s Debby Wasserman Schultz won with 60% and Alcee Hastings (D) won, in what seemed like an almost non-contested race with 79%. In what was a particularly nasty race, David Rivera (R) won over Joe Garcia with 52% in District 25. Equality Florida, the state’s largest LGBT rights organization, endorsed four candidates in the state’s forty Senatorial races. Kelly Skidmore (District 25-D) lost to Ellyn Bogdanoff with 38%, Kevin Rader (District 27-D) lost with 46% and Les Gerson (District 38-D) lost with 32%. However, in District 35, Gwen Margolis (D) won against Corey Poitier (R) with 78%. Candidates for State Representative in key LGBT areas of Florida and endorsed by Equality Florida were trounced. In the Tampa Bay area, District 51’s Janet Long lost with 44% of the vote, Stacy Frank (District 57-D) lost with 44%, Russ Patterson (District 60-D) also lost with 44% and Keith Fitzgerald (District 69-D) barely lost with 49%. If there was some sunshine on the west coast, it was District 53 where Rick Kriseman (D) won with 58%. Equality Florida backed State

Included were Mack Bernard (District 84-D) with 78%, Joseph Abruzzo (District 87-D) won with 53%, Jeff Clemens (District 89-D) won with 61%, Irving Slosberg (District 90-D) won with 63%, Jim Waldman (District 95-D) won with 61%, Ari Porth (District 96-D) won with 71%, Franklin Sands (District 98-D) won with 63%, Evan Jenne (District 100-D) garnered 67%, Luis Garcia (District 107-D) won with 51% and Ron Saunders (District 120-D) won with 55%. Gwyndolen Clark-Reed, District 92, Democrat, covering much of Broward County ran unopposed. In key County Commission races, Broward County’s first openly gay mayor, Ken Keechl (District 4) lost his reelection bid to the county commission with 45% but LGBT-backed Suzanne Gunzburger won reelection with 72% in District 6. Both Hillsborough County Commission candidates backed by Equality Florida lost: John Dingfelder (District 1) with 46% and Linda Saul-Sena (District 5) with 43%. Miami-Dade County Commission District 8 election is very close and may end up in a re-count. Equality Florida backed Eugene Flinn and his opponent Lynda Bell split the vote almost 50-50. Write in ballots, that are still to be counted, could make a difference in the final result Palm Beach County Commission candidates endorsed by Palm Beach County Human Rights Council were Sherry Lee (District 2) who lost, Jess Santamaria (District 6) who won and Priscilla Taylor (District 7) who also won. Equality Florida-backed, Susan Latvala (R) won her bid for Pinellas County Commission District 4 with 56%. Key amendments to the Florida Constitution won allow for military personnel an additional tax credit on their property taxes and new redistricting rules for both state and national districts. It was a good day for the incumbents in Wilton Manors. Mayor Gary Resnick was returned to office with almost 66% of the vote. Also returning to city hall are commissioners Ted Galatis and Scott Newton. Former City Commissioner Julie Carson, who sat on the dais for a few months in 2009 replacing Resnick who became mayor. She was temporarily appointed to fill Resnick’s seat in the City Commission and lost that seat to Scott Newton in a special election. I’ve had a lot of hate speech thrown at me and my family on every level.” The Arkansas Department of Education had said it was “dismayed to see that a school board official would post something of this insensitive nature on a public forum like Facebook.” The Midland School District had also denounced the posting. “The district strives to foster an environment that discourages all forms of bullying,” it said in a statement this week, “and an environment that encourages a safe and productive educational climate [for] all of our students.” McCance has sent his wife and kids out of the state because of fears for their safety and that said he is installing a security system.H

HELP IS A CALL AWAY The recent teen suicides of Tyler Clementi, Blake Davis, Eddy McIntyre, Kevin Cline and several others rocked the nation. These young people felt that it was better to kill themselves than to continue living with the anti-gay bullying they were treated with almost on a daily basis. Bullying, self-doubts about sexual orientation, coming out, loneliness, loss of clear thinking, feelings of hopelessness, or worthlessness, loss of a loved one, inability to cope, severe anxiety, increased use of alcohol or drugs can all be warning signs of depression, even suicide. The LGBT community of MiamiDade and South Florida has an important resource to help others become more aware and perhaps prevent LGBT suicides like the recent ones the nation has seen. The LGBT Helpline and Suicide Awareness Program at Switchboard of Miami is available 24 hours, 7 days a week to help. Unfortunately, it’s not just teenagers who are at risk at times approximately 50% of their callers have been between 35 and 59 years old — sadly forgotten, literally and figuratively, are the midaged and older adults, especially men,

who, for reasons of loneliness, health or financial problems turn to suicide as a solution. Each member of the LGBT community has a special responsibility to one another. Since many in the community are separated from their biological family, either geographically or emotionally, their de facto family becomes their friends, co-workers, neighbors or even acquaintances. The Helpline can be reached at (305) 646-3600 anytime to speak to a counselor. At the other end of the line will be a member of The LGBT Helpline and Suicide Awareness Program to listen, to help in a crisis, to discuss the warning signs of suicide and depression or to design an action plan with information and referrals for you, a friend or family member. It’s free and completely confidential. The LGBT Helpline and Suicide Awareness Program has been serving the Miami region for 5 years via the Switchboard of Miami, Inc. The organization’s staff and volunteers have played an important role in over 260 crisis situations with members of our LGBT community in their hour of need and have provided information and referrals to more than 400 additional more individuals, their friends and families.

Authentic Dating Two middle-aged men looking for a long term committed relationship chat on Match.com and decide to meet for coffee. Tom and Roger are both good-looking, intelligent and personable. They have a very nice conversation. Roger is very interested in Tom, but Tom seems less than excited. Of course, Roger is hoping Tom would like to meet for a second date.
Roger should … A. Directly ask Tom if there is any potential and interest in further dating. B. Ask Tom out for dinner on Saturday night. C. Not discuss the future and wait for Tom to call to ask him out again. D. Wait 2 days and, if Tom hasn’t called, then call Tom to feel him out. Tom should … A. Directly let Roger know that he is not interested in further dating. B. Tell Roger he wouldn’t mind seeing him again. C. Not discuss his lack of interest and hope he never hears from Roger again. D. Agree to another date only if Roger calls him. How many times have we heard folks say they are tired of the “games” that we play when dating? But then again, how often have we been as much the cause of the games as the other players? How often have you chosen “A” when you’re in the situation described above? Isn’t it always easier to skirt the expression of your true feelings to avoid being rejected or avoid hurting the other person? “Authentic Dating” is about being honest. First, that requires being true to yourself about what you are looking for — i.e.: what is/are your goal(s) for dating? Are you looking for a life partner? Are you looking for casual sex? Is stabil-
spection and an evaluation of your selfesteem. Finally, you want to be totally honest with your date. If there is nothing there but you want to see if something will ity more important than passion? Do you develop (unlikely, by the way) say so. If want a monogamous relationship or an you want to be dating a whole host of open relationship? Are you currently in people and are not ready to be with one a positive life space and available for an individual, say so. If you are only interexclusive sort of dating relationship or ested in this person for sex, say so. If you are looking for exclusivity in dating, say not? so. If you have no interest in another date, say so. If you see potential in this person, say so. The logical argument against such a straight forward approach is that you might scare someone off. This approach is not for everyone — only for those who want a honest, open and secure relationship with another person who has similar objectives. I can state unequivocally, if there is a mutual, passionate connection (i.e.: chemistry or “click”) and both are looking for the same thing, the other person will not be turned off by stating your feelings. Your date will be thrilled to know you feel likewise. If there is no passion or if the two of you have different objectives, what difference does it make if you scare the other person away? Remember, the first date is about potential for passion. If there is none, move on. Subsequent dates are about Courtesy, Dennis Dean exploring values, compatiNext, you must be honest with yourself bility, mutual interests and yes, sex. about how you feel about the person you are meeting or dating. No More Mr. Nice Guy All right, if you’re going to tell me you’re going to top me in the first five minutes of our first conversation, at least be a man about it, and take off your wig and earrings. I mean, seriously? Is this my pay-off for entertaining a chat at the bar? Well, if so, I’m not impressed. But then again, I suppose that it’s my fault, because I’m making myself more ‘accessible’. Why? Well, because my friends say I’m a dick-tease, and I need to lower my standards. So fine! Tonight, I’m talking to everything with or without a pulse. And slowly, I’m getting used to the fact that not every frog is a prince, particularly when it comes to a beer kiss. But meeting the parent of a stranger I have no intention of kissing? Well, this might be too much. But then again, I can’t be too

picky. You see, this drag queen with a Bette Davis wig, he wants to control me; he wants to lurve me. But first, he wants me to meet his mother. “Mom, Anthony Paull, Anthony Paull, mom,” he says, making the introductions. Smoking alone on a bar stool, she waves a proud hello, urging her son to buy me a beer. “For God’s sake, have some manners!” she tells him. “Can it, mother! I can take it from here,” he groans. Then turning to me, he takes a long drag off his cigarette before fluffing his wig. “So, Anthony. Before this relationship goes any further, I need you to know something. I don’t need some damn, stupid man.” Hence, this is when the surrounding gay hipsters, in skinny jeans and lumberjack plaids, clear out. “I got a job. I got a car. I got a house. Why the HELL do I need you?” “You don’t. I’m just a poor writer who lives with his dad,” I say, turning to follow the hipsters. But no, that’s not enough to deter him. You see, he wants me to know that he just raised 10,000 for some gay benefit, and I guess, I’m supposed to give a shit, but I don’t, because he just freaking spilled wine on the sneakers I spent my entire paycheck on. Therefore, I turn away, dancing off to an electro-pop number playing on the jukebox. “Don’t walk away when I’m talking to you. We got something!” he calls – his blue sequined dress, reflecting off the disco ball.
“Dude, I’m straight,” I attempt to explain. “Mmhm. Straight to the next dick,” he remarks. “Fine, I’m shy. Look, I don’t even know you….” “Oh, but you know my mom!” he snaps. “You don’t know me…but you know my whole family!” Shaking his booty, there’s wine flying here and there, and saving the day, his mom joins the conversation, telling him to calm down or he might scare me off. But it’s too late. That happened the minute we made eye-contact. You see, his Bette Davis-wig, it merely got in the way when I was peeking around for someone who wasn’t wearing a mini-dress. But again, maybe I’m being too picky. Yet, dear God, how can I not be? Once you’ve been loved right, it’s so hard to be loved wrong. Can I come down from this cloud? “Yeah, you got to let your guard down a little, man,” my friend Max tells me, as I haul ass to the jukebox, pretending to be preoccupied with finding a song. I’m thinking: this is why I don’t date. I have this code. Like hey, if you like me, come up and say ‘hello’. I really dig that. Call me a traditionalist, but I don’t like some guy talking about sticking his penis in my ass when I don’t even know his name. As a matter of fact, that idea hurts, especially the thought of him lifting his dress to top me. But I’m not giving up! No! There has to be a nice guy somewhere in the midst. After all, I’m here, and I’m nice. So I must go on I think, as Max introduces me to a few co-workers — one of which who approaches me with a drunken leer. “Aw, you’re pretty,” he says, tipping his

fedora hat. Then he tells me it again and again, and I kind of like it, except he’s already leaning in to kiss me, and his breath stinks like corn chips and bacon. So I push him away, saying ‘no’ — an act which he takes as an insult, resulting in a conversation with Max, where he inquires if I’m a whore. “Whoa! Are you kidding me?” I respond, when Max relays the message. “It’s no big deal. The guy’s drunk. He just doesn’t understand why you won’t kiss him,” Max says. “Wait a minute. So I’m supposed to kiss and screw everyone who approaches me? Otherwise, I’m a whore? That doesn’t even make sense!” Overhearing the conversation, the drag queen’s mother attempts to save the day, yet again. “SEE? My son would NEVER call you a whore,” she attests. “No. He would just talk to me like I’m one.” And all the gay hipsters go ‘oooh’ in the crowd. But I’m not joining them. Rather, I’m fleeing the bar, before driving home, thinking how much this hurts. More than being a bottom for any big-top penis — this kills, being single and realizing this is my path, that this is what I have to face in the face of dating. It’s pimply, the pursuit of a mate, and I’m picky, because my heart is itching for a love it once had. So tell me, where do I go if I’m a prude, and I want a ‘hello’? I haven’t found such a place, so I say it to myself, staring into the rear-view mirror. “Hello, hello.” For tonight, it seems me being nice to me is my only reminder of what I want and who I am.

All-Star Gym Opens By RYAN DIXON I can remember making fun of the male cheerleaders in high school — all the cheerleaders, come to think of it. The only thing funnier to me at sports banquets, besides getting a letter in chess, was getting a letter in cheerleading. I felt that just because your sport makes it on ESPN, that doesn’t justify calling it a “sport”. That was until Deshon Allen set me straight. Deshon, along with his coaching partner Jamie, opened South Florida All Star Gym on Wednesday, November 3. They are located at 114 S. Congress Avenue in Palm Springs, Florida in Palm Beach County. The “Lady Makos Dancers” of the Palm Beach Makos minor league football team were on hand to perform and do a meet and greet. The gym serves as home to the South Florida Panthers All Stars cheerleading teams as well as be opening to the public for anyone who wants to advance their cheer needs or maybe get started. Starting at three years of age all the way up to adult and “parent” classes, the SFAS gym has all the bases covered. You’ll learn the proper skills needed for jumps, motions and stunts as well as gain skills and excel in flexibility. “Anything you want to know or learn about cheering, we do it” says Deshon. “We’re even offering our space for any squad in the area that wants to come and practice here.” What that means is those high schools that don’t necessarily have the money or see the
need to provide the cheer team with their own mats to practice on, as opposed to using the ones the wrestling teams use can use the SFAS

Of all the things we do to stay healthy, one of the most over-looked preventatives to keeping the doctor away is right under our nose. How often you smile could have a direct impact on your biological and mental well-being. It may be surprising to you that when you smile — even a fake smile — can release endorphins. Endorphins are transmitters in the brain that reduce pain and feelings of anger and sadness. This chain reaction in mood has a serious biological benefit, increasing one’s immune system, specifically individuals with compromised immune systems. One of our best natural defenses are little known lymphocyte (white blood) cells referred to as Natural Killer (NK) Cells. These cells in short are the meanest, toughest little guys (or ladies) that can more effectively destroy most viruses, including HIV and types of cancers. Some studies even show individuals with compromised immune systems and large amounts of NK cells systems have been able to postpone the use of medication treatment. And F.Y.I., your mood makes all the difference in the number of NK cells you have. A Harvard study showed individuals with “good coping skills” and a positive outlook tended to produce three times as many active NK cells than those who were identified in a high-stress group. One aspect that experts are quick to point out is that an individual who frequently func-
facility. Deshon also told me that “it takes a lot to run a business these days, especially with this economy.” That’s why he and his team have gone that extra mile to check prices with other similar programs all over the state. After the uniform and pom-poms and coach’s fee, things can start to add up. “Our classes are $85 a month, and that includes one class a
tions in high stress keeps his/her immune systems working over time. In-effect your body is busy coping with an increased heart rate, slowed adrenaline, digestion issues and loss of blood flow to major muscle groups. This fight or flight response (the body’s perception of threat or danger) can have even long term effects, such as hair loss, obesity, diabetes, depression, tooth and gum disease, ulcers and as it usually comes down to in this column … sexual dysfunction. Sex and stress are definitely linked. Not only does stress contribute to a low sex drive physiologically; under stress, the body releases cortisol, (a hormone) which inhibits other hormones such as testosterone – the principal male sex hormone. It is also responsible for healthy body development, such as retention of protein and tissue mass which are especially vital to individuals with compromised immune systems. The good news is that it seems to work the other way around as well. Sex can be a great stress reliever. Researchers found a correlation between sex and stimulated cell growth in the hippocampus of the brain. That’s the part of the brain primarily associated with long-term memory. In addition, a healthy sex drive can result in decreased blood pressure and an increase of antibodies and endorphins – which can increase those NK cells. Not to mention, if done right, it should put that smile back on your face.

Sizzling San Juan, Puerto Rico The Caribbean’s only gay Mecca By PAUL RUBINO Even before Puerto Ricans claimed fame to illustrious homo-sexpot, Ricky Martin, drag superstar, Jessica Wild, and a record five winners of the Miss Universe Pageant, their unwavering pride for their homeland was unmistakable. Regardless of political domination by the Spanish empire or the U.S. Empire, Puerto Ricans have developed a distinctive yet evolving national identity, commingling pre-Hispanic roots and Spanish conquest with Afro-Caribbean flavors and American commercialism. Puerto Ricans affectionately and proudly refer to themselves as Boricua, a modern linguistic derivation of Boriken, the island’s original, pre-Hispanic Taíno name. Nowadays, Puerto Rican pride goes beyond frilly flags hanging from the rear view mirror, Raggaeton shout-outs and NYC parades – it’s an ongoing social and cultural revolution happening on the island itself. Puerto Rico’s capital, San Juan, plays a key role as the Caribbean’s only true gay ambassador and thriving metropolis. While battles for GLBT rights have met great success in Europe, Mexico, and Argentina, in 2010 Puerto Rico remains the only Caribbean island embracing a same-sex lifestyle. This tropical maverick also differentiates itself from its counterparts by offering much more than hair braiding, barefoot escapades, beautiful beaches and Rastafarian rhapsody. San Juan, in particular, offers first-class cultural opportunities, big city sophistication, and some of the best-preserved colonial architecture in the Americas. Seductive beaches notwithstanding, Castillo San Felipe del Morro is San Juan’s centerpiece monument. Rising 145 feet from the sea with 18-foot-thick walls, the 70-acre enclave impresses from all angles. El Paseo de la Princesa (which literally translates to the Princess’ Promenade…) wraps around the ancient city walls of the neighborhood now known as Old San Juan. This yellow brick road leads you toward an expansive gateway that reveals El Morro in a panorama of fairy tale proportions. The fascinating staircases and mazes of the castle grounds lead to windswept precipices and eerie dead ends. The Hogwarts magic continues at the opposite end of Old San Juan at El Morro’s counterpart, Castillo San Cristobal. The well-preserved cobblestone streets of Old San Juan host over 400 meticulously restored 16th- and 17th-century Spanish colonial buildings alongside charming plazas, old school banquet halls, and the cheesy Hard Rock-like joints near the cruise ship port. The old city’s hottest restaurants reside at the southern end of Fortaleza Street, also known as SoFo. Ten years strong and trendy, the Asian-inspired Dragonfly
(www.oofrestaurants.com) still attracts the San Juan glamorpuss for Latin AmericanAsian fusion fun in the ghetto-fabulous recreation of an Asian opium den. Though less pristine than Vieques’ downy sands, San Juan’s beaches are spicy, gregarious and seductive. The city has two gay beaches – one in front of the gay Atlantic Beach Hotel (www.atlanticbeachhotel.com) in the high-rise Condado district (at end of Calle Vendig), and the other opposite Pamela’s Caribbean Cuisine in the low-rise Ocean Park district (between Calle Taft and Calle Santa Ana). The Atlantic Beach Hotel is a downright dump, but it does boast an awesome beachfront bar, perfect for enjoying fruity cocktails in the birthplace of Piña Coladas. A close cab ride away, Loiza's Piñones sector showcases Puerto Rico’s raw beach beauty at its finest. Within the spectacular Bosque Estatal de Piñones (along Highway 187 Old San between San Juan and Juan Loíza) lies an ecological treasure chest of uninhabited beaches, mangroves, salt flats, lagoons, and rich bird life. After your play date with nature, well-deserved calories await at the global award-winning Pikayo (www.pikayo.com), maintaining the crown as Puerto Rico’s superlative dining option for 20 years, with a recent re-location to the Conrad Condado Plaza. Post suppertime, crowds swarm the roof-top bar of the Water & Beach Club Hotel before heading to traditional nighttime staples like the video bar, Circo (www.circobar.com), and dance palladium Krash Klub (www.krashpr.com). While gay life centralizes in residential Condado, more ideal options for accommodation are found in nearby Isla Verde. This is where Vegas meets the beach, and the ubiquitous vacation vibe keeps things uncomplicated. In this resort-heavy district, the RitzCarlton, San Juan Hotel, Spa and Casino (www.ritzcarlton.com) stands out among the competition, combining all the splendor of a Ritz with the simplicity of the tropics. A tropical elegance motif unites the vast spaces of the oceanfront sanctuary. In common areas, grand pineapple chandeliers shine upon fresh exotic floral arrangements while lush reds and greens contrast the teak furniture in guestrooms. Bathroom queens will love the property’s “Water Closet” extravaganza. The palatial bathtub, shower, toilet, and vanity area each merit unique space, together comprising a square footage larger than a NYC apartment. The beach chairs, umbrellas, table service, and beachfront pampering are yours for the taking. However, the marble lion-clad, five-in-one 7,200 square foot swimming pool emerges as the resort’s center of attention (though resident iguana George would like to think it’s him). Whether sipping margaritas by the pool, getting carried away at the hotel spa, or watching the waves crash from the Club Level balcony, the hotel fosters an unabashed haven for relaxation, romance, and selfindulgence. Pumpkin Crepes By JEAN DOHERTY/LE PATIO We are now in November (where did the year go?) and our thoughts turn to Thanksgiving. This is a perfect addition to your traditional Thanksgiving feast: Ingredients: (for approximately 40 crepes) 1 lb wheat flour 3 whole eggs beaten 1/2 pint of milk 1/2 pint of water 2 oz. butter ‘meunière’ (melted and cooked until slightly browned) 2 oz. caster sugar 1 pinch of table salt 14 oz. peeled pumpkin, cut into small cubes 1 pint milk 3 egg yolks 3 1/2oz. caster sugar 4 oz. sifted flour 1 teaspoon of vanilla sugar A few tablespoons of icing sugar Directions: Heat up the butter. Prepare the pancake mixture: mix flour with eggs, then add sugar, salt, milk and water and stir well to get rid of any lumps (if you still have some, use a blender) and then add the butter ‘meunière’. Put the mixture
aside and cover for at least 2 hours before using it. Bring the milk to the boil then add the pumpkin cubes to it and cook for about 4 minutes. Put the yolks into a salad bowl then add the sugar (the standard caster and the vanilla), stir well and then add the flour and continue stirring. Drain the pumpkin cubes (keep them aside) and add the milk in which the pumpkin has cooked into the salad bowl; stir well and transfer the lot to the saucepan on the stove. Stir well with a whisk for about a minute starting at the boiling point. Take the saucepan off the stove, add the pumpkin cubes and blend in an electric blender. Pour the mixture into a dish and sprinkle some icing sugar on it in order to avoid having a crust when it cools down. Cook the pancakes as usual; 10 minutes before serving them, pour, on half of each pancake 1 tablespoon of pumpkin cream, fold the pancakes in 2, put them on a buttered oven tin, spread some icing sugar on them and put them into the oven (heated at 320°F) for 3 to 4 minutes. Serve the pancakes on a plate, with, for instance, a custard blended with a little apricot jam and some crushed hazelnuts. Don’t tell your guests about the ingredients you have used: they will imagine mango, papaya, apricot — only tell the truth after they told you it was to die for! A guaranteed success.H
