THE STATEWIDE VOICE OF THE LGBT COMMUNITY

The Best of the Best in LGBT Florida Oprah Winfrey once said, “Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.” That means that the winners of the 2010 Florida Agenda’s Best Of annual reader poll are seizing their opportunity to make an impact now and well into the future. While the individuals, businesses or non-profits are taking home the coveted Florida Agenda Best Of title, the real winners this year are our readers, who continue to support the local LGBT outfits that make our community flourish. It’s thanks to you that the BEST bars, restaurants and nightclubs continue to provide us entertainment. It’s thanks to you that the BEST non-profits continue to fight for LGBT rights or help the less fortunate in our kinship. It’s thanks to you that the BEST characters in our populace continue to be employed and are able to share their magical gifts and talents. As we take this special issue to salute them, you have the next 51 weeks to make an impact in the community and in the lives of others. And who knows, you could be taking home a Best Of honor next year. But until then, keep volunteering, take advantage of happy hour, enjoy the community theatre – but most of all, keep doing your part to ensure that the LGBT community continues to thrive. The 2010 Florida Agenda’s Best of annual reader poll starts on page 32.

COMMUNITY ALERT

Police searching for separate suspects involved in two attacks By DMITRY RASHNITSOV Wilton Manors Police are investigating a series of attempted rapes and muggings that have caused grave concern in and around the small predominantly gay and lesbian community. At about 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12, 23-year-old Kevin Burns was attacked and forcefully sodomized in the 1800 block of N. Dixie Highway in Fort Lauderdale, less than a block outside

of Wilton Manors, according to a Wilton Manors Police Report. According to Burns, he was walking down Dixie Highway when a 5-foot- 9-inch white male with a swimmer’s build, who appeared to be in his 40’s with dark hair and dark circles under his eyes, asked him for a cigarette. “After I handed him a cigarette he smashed me over my head with a big rock,” Burns recalls. “He went and

grabbed my shirt and ripped my shirt and used it to strangle me. As he was strangling me he stabbed me seven times with a hypodermic needle. I don’t know what was in the needle. I don’t know what it was for. I went to go scream and he took the shirt and he held it even tighter and said ‘shut the fuck up.’” Burns said that he was terrified and could not believe what was happening to him, but that was just the beginning of

the ordeal. Burns ended up falling to the ground. “He starts pushing me over the wires, takes a knife out and cuts my belt,” Burns said. “Then he takes my pants and rips them completely off. With his bare hands he reached in and grabbed my underwear and just tore it off of me. He then put the knife back on my throat,

Collins Avenue to welcome gay hotel

Courtesy, Lords South Beach

SOUTH BEACH, Fla. - South Beach was once the gay capital of South Florida, and a new hotel opening on Collins Avenue is hoping to bring some classiness back to the gay scene on the party island. Lords South Beach Hotel, 1120 Collins Ave., is scheduled to start catering to guests Nov. 21. With 54 rooms, three pools, two restaurants and a bar, Lords South Beach is attempting to be an all-encompassing property that guests only leave when they want to go to the beach. They are also offering an in-house social network, where guests can connect with each other and plan dinner reservations. “We are thrilled to bring this exciting hospitality concept to South Beach; our goal is provide a liberal, proud, playful experience for guests,” said Founder Brian Gorman. “We hope that Lords South Beach will raise the bar for what the discerning gay traveler can expect from a hotel.” Lords is also pairing with popular gay hotspot Crunch Fitness to offer free gym access to its guests. One of the hotel’s more unique concepts is that they pledge to donate 10 percent of all profits to charity. Depending on which room a guest stays in, the three charities that will receive money include Care Resource, Point Foundation and the Hetrick-Martin Institute. Care Resource is a local charity that assists people with HIV, while Point Foundation and HetrickMartin Institute are national charities that provide education resources for LGBT students. If you stay there, make sure to check out the “Stay Naked” in-room dining option. H

Now the world can view some never before seen prints during “Stars Thru My Lens,” Deutsch’s exhibit at the Dennis Dean Galleries, 2440-B Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors. The exhibit will run from Nov. 19 through Dec 31. There will be a meet the artist reception on Friday, Nov. 19, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the gallery. Deutsch began shooting photos of movie stars in the ’60s. As a resident of New York City, he was able to get up close and personal with many stars by hanging around Broadway theatres. “When I was a teenager growing up in NYC I developed two loves: movie stars and photography,” Deutsch said. “One of my first encounters was with Marilyn Monroe, when she came to Madison Square Garden to sing happy birthday to President Kennedy (May 19, 1962).” Deutsch later began freelancing for Time, Newsweek and People magazines. He also was invited to many star-studded parties and spent many evenings at Studio 54. His exhibit includes photos from this time period with shots of Barbra Streisand, Carol Burnett, Bette Midler, Tony Danza, Kevin Bacon, Liz Taylor and many more. “I spent many hours with Elizabeth Taylor – once while she was Mrs. John Warner,” Deutsch said. “We spent a day together in Delaware at a race track, and another time I was allowed to photograph the first performance of her Broadway debut in ‘The Little Foxes.’ I was also allowed to photograph what turned out to be Elvis' last concert in early 1977 – he died soon after this tour, and photos taken during his concert have been sold and published all over the world.” H

Rare photos of Barbra Streisand and others showcased in ‘Stars Thru My Lens’ FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Imagine having photographs of some of the most sought out celebrities from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s and not having anywhere to showcase them. That’s the dilemma that photographer Bob Deutsch has found himself in. Deutsch

Gay American Heroes

FOUNDER MULTIMEDIA PLATFORMS BOBBY BLAIR - CEO / MANAGING PARTNER

Ryan Skipper: the inspiration behind the National Rainbow Memorial

PUBLISHER KEVIN HOPPER

By SCOTT HALL It all started in March 2007 as I was watching the local news and heard of a young man who had been murdered for being gay. His name was Ryan Skipper, and he would later become the inspiration for the National Rainbow Memorial, not to mention a Gay American Hero. At 25, Skipper was your everyday bighearted, handsome young guy living out of the cage of shame and fear in Polk County, Florida, which is located between Orlando and Tampa. It takes a lot of courage and strength to live as an LGBT person in an area where the presence of the KKK is prominent. It’s also home to a local sheriff who implied that Skipper got what he deserved because he was out looking for sex. To date, that sheriff has never apologized to Skipper’s family for his insensitive statements. Skipper, who was openly gay, was attacked in his own car. His body was found on the side of a road, his throat slashed and as many as 20 stab wounds covered his torso. The two cowards who brutally murdered Skipper were convicted and are serving two life terms

with no possibility of parole. Unfortunately, Skipper’s death is part of an alarming statistic: one LGBT person is murdered every nine days, and one gay bashing occurs every six hours in America. Since his death, Skipper’s parents have started a PFLAG chapter in Polk County and are fighting hate on the frontlines. His brother is on the Gay American Heroes advisory board and has traveled to Washington, D.C. and met with President Barack Obama as part of a coalition to get a national hate crime law passed. It’s time to show the world our heroes because our family and friends are being stolen from us because of hate. We will not live in fear, but rather face the ongoing violence against the LGBT community head on. We will be united in this fight for respect, dignity and protections under the law. It is through awareness, education and perseverance that we will prevail and honor the lives of all our Gay American Heroes. Teach love, fight hate, save Lives and give Hope – The National Rainbow Memorial.

The Amazon Trail: The Nice Lesbian Neighbors By LEE LYNCH I do get cranky sometimes when the doorbell rings. It’s a learned response to solicitors. Got religion? I have my own beliefs thank-you-very-much. Buy chocolate bars? I’d love to, but the budget’s too tight. Vote for WHO? Are you out of your freakin’ tree? And yes, you can come in our yard to retrieve your wiffle ball, frisbee, SpongeBob kite, little brother and pet snake. Once a year, Halloween makes me a complete curmudgeon. My sweetheart is a nice person. She likes to support the local elementary school’s baseball team. She’ll buy those chocolate bars and give them away at work. She gives neighbor kids blanket permission to retrieve their wiffle balls, frisbees, SpongeBob kites, little brothers and pet snakes. She enjoys giving out candy to excited, costumed munchkins. And she’s right. It’s good to be pleasant to the neighbors. Good for them, good for the neighborhood, good for the soul. It’s especially important for us because we want to be the nice lesbian neighbors. I can sign every online petition for ENDA, DADT, and NO ON NOMA that comes my way, but if I scowl at little kids congregating in our driveway or turn off the lights and don’t answer the door at Halloween, I’m not only condemning myself to everlasting grinchhood, I’m teaching non-gays, who outnumber us in our development hundreds to two,

that lesbians are unhappy grouches too different to be trusted or tolerated. So I’m getting with the program, though in so many ways I don’t know how. Take the tomboy across the street. Just because she acts like a daredevil on her bicycle, rides a skateboard with élan, has her own basketball hoop in her driveway and walks like a seasoned butch, doesn’t mean she’s going to breeze into holy dykedom at puberty. She’s only about a half a step away from puberty now. Any day she’s going to wake up and see her future living across the street from her. While she comes to terms with her own sexuality, will she feel the need to make trouble for us: call us names? Out us to young mischief-makers? Vandalize our home? Or, will she come to our door seeking a way into the gay world? What if she flings herself out of her closet and brings attention to us? It won't be an easy journey for her as she has a passel of ragtail non-gay relatives. The men drive diesel pickups with oversized tires. The women drive mini vans with church stickers. There’s also a tattle-tale girly little sister and lots of cousins: hard-staring little kids, very unlike the tomboy, who always averts her eyes. I keep my distance. The last thing I want is to be the nice lesbian neighbor she decides to hang around. Or for her to swoon at my sweetheart’s feet. I know what I was like when I first came out, crushed out on a

teacher, too excited to hide who I was, longing for entry to the gay life, yet too shy and too scared and too outlawed to knock on any doors. That was a long time ago. These days, any tomboy can look us up on the internet. At the same time, the ancient taboos have not disappeared. She may ignore her instincts, go to her prom with a guy and add her kids to the passel of relatives. Or she may ring our doorbell. What will she need to know? What can I give her? If she shows up on our doorstep, what’s the right thing for a nice lesbian neighbor to do? Invite the kid in for a cup of tea and honest talk? Jolly her along with smirks and winks? We keep our lawn green and neat, plant flowers, trim the shrubs and pick up after our dog. Our public displays of affection are minor, and only one neighbor knows we’re married. We have no piles of loud dykes at parties. We smile and say hello, go to the community picnics and admire the kids’ accomplishments. We’re the perfect neighbors except we're – you know – lesbians. Maybe this is the best message we can send our tomboy neighbor, that she can expect to live happily ever after any way and anywhere she wants. That we are neither seducers nor threats. But, oh, what if she needs more than that? What if we can save her life? What if I don’t answer the door?

opinion / advice

Curing the hopeless romantic revolving door syndrome By ARLEN KEITH LEIGHT, PH.D. The short-lived relationship was rocky at best. You initially thought this man was really for you. Thinking about him made you feel whole, happy and hopeful. He showed great interest in being with you. He had some great qualities, but right from the start you knew there were some “issues.” Being the eternal optimist you figured you’d work at it in hopes of true love, romance and relationship. You almost immediately felt a total emotional commitment. You found yourself thinking about him often – maybe obsessively – and projecting a life together. When the problems became greater than the “relationship” satisfaction, it ended with a feeling of relief mixed with disappointment. But now it is time to move on, and before you can blink an eye someone appears with great qualities and, well, some “issues.” Despite that why not see if this new man is “the one?” So you invest again only to find later you are ready to jump ship again. Within days of it ending, another “true love” comes along. This pattern of obsessive-compulsive behavior is complex and multi-dimensional.

The likelihood is that you feel empty and lonely without feeling the attention and love of a potential partner. The pain of each break-up is avoided by the emersion into the next relationship. There was likely childhood emotional neglect and/or abuse. By ignoring red flags or lacking filters to make wise choices, you are essentially asking for a repetition of childhood abuse, neglect and/or emotional pain. Unconsciously you are repeating the family-of-origin pattern, which is actually familiar and comfortable compared with the prospect of true intimacy. The repetitive compulsion is an unconscious attempt to heal the wounds of childhood thinking that the new person will fully love you because of the interest shown upon meeting. It is this initial interest that is so alluring and bypasses your rational mind that might otherwise realize the prospective partner is not a good match. The initial excitement of a relationship provides a brain chemical brain response that creates a high, which has the potential to be very addicting and covers up any feelings of loss or grief associated with the last rela-

tionship or childhood pain. Despite the near desperation to be in a relationship, the pattern actually sets you up for future loneliness — the very feeling you are trying to avoid.

Here are some suggested steps to remedy the behavior pattern: 1. Find a therapist who is not invested in your desire to be in a relationship. 2. Take time off from dating to be by yourself; feel the pain of loneliness and be with the anxiety. 3.. Work on feeling good and complete about yourself. Remember, fulfillment does not require partnership. 4.. After a sufficient period of time, enter the dating world slowly and know what you want in a partner. 5.. Experience dating without a relationship in mind. Don’t limit yourself to one person and don’t confuse interest from others with love. 6.. If you are going to date someone more than a couple of times, be sure they are emotionally, intellectually and sexually available and compatible. Learn to say “no” if there are red flags.

jean’s kitchen Sauce au poivre By JEAN DOHERTY/LE PATIO Traditional steak au poivre has been served as a pan sauce since at least the mid-19th century. Regardless of the concoction, the same pan should be used to create the sauce as was used to cook the steak. But we are in South Florida, so the BBQ will probably take the place of the pan, so I’m giving you a simple way to make a delicious sauce without the smokey pan smells in the kitchen.

Some chefs believe heavy cream doesn’t belong in the traditional steak au poivre recipe, though many restaurants and at-home chefs include the cream. It does make the sauce so much better. Voila! H

Father Bill Collins Father Bill Collins

By Pompano Bill

Father Bill Collins is the outspoken Jesuit priest who founded the Poverello Center and has become one of the LGBT community’s most beloved individuals. In the early ’80s, before there was an actual name for what we now know as HIV/AIDS, Collins, a priest at St. Coleman’s Catholic Church, would visit the hospitals and see people dying from some unknown disease. He found out that the patients who were fortunate enough to go home to live out their lives no longer had an income. Collins then decided to cash in his pension and purchase food for those who were home and suffering and could not afford to go shop for food. At that time, the Poverello Food Bank was run out of the trunk of Collins’ car as he made his weekly deliveries. When the pension was all spent, he then took a second job teaching at then Broward Community College and used his salary from teaching and the church to purchase more groceries. Some people in the community found out what Collins had been doing and opened a thrift store, first located in Pompano Beach, to help support Collins in his endeavor to feed those who were stricken with HIV/AIDS. Poverello continued to grow and 25 years later, the Poverello Center has more than 4,000 clients. Since he began Poverello, the center has assisted more than 12,000 and has more than 135 volunteers. Collins, 79, still shows up for work every day.

Sidelines Sports Bar sponsors a number of sports teams throughout the year. The most incredible team they sponsor is the Sidelines Cyclones, which started shortly after Sidelines opened. The Cyclones have won numerous championships in their class and have brought the trophy home to Sidelines many times.

BEST FEMALE IMPERSONATOR Misty Eyez Misty Eyez has gone from “just another drag face” to a much-admired community sensation in less than 10 years. She did this through self-promotion and by becoming one of the community’s biggest supporters. Each year she performs hundreds of hours, pro bono, supporting almost any charity or fundraiser that asks her to help out — and many times they don’t have to ask as she usually asks them first if they need her assistance. It’s hard to find an important community event where Misty isn’t present. She is also the creator of the popular Trannie Palace on Sunday nights at Bill’s Filling Station on Wilton Drive. Misty has become a mentor to aspiring new talent and has a daily blog on YouTube called Misty Minutes, where she gives tips on everything from dating to applying mascara.

BEST CELEBRITY MELTDOWN OF 2010

LEAST FAVORITE RIGHT-WING CELEBRITY

Mel Gibson

Sarah Palin

Mel Gibson

After what has been referred to as “the rant heard ‘round the world,” Mel Gibson’s career may be fluttering. In January, his film “Edge of Darkness” only brought in half of its $80 million budget. Time will tell if he can still bring in money when his next film, “Beaver,”

opens in February 2011. In the film, Gibson plays a depressed toy manufacturer who begins to communicate solely through a puppet in an attempt to learn how to relate better with his wife and kids. Perhaps Gibson should have started playing with toys earlier, especially before his alleged hateful rant last July to his former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, who is also the mother of his young daughter. In this conversation, which was recorded and “somehow” leaked to the press, it is contended that Gibson threatened Grigorieva’s life while throwing around the “f-word” and repeatedly calling her the “c-word.” In some of the more recent recordings, Gibson’s statements could be considered racist, sexist, antiLatino and anti-Semitic. In his defense, Gibson’s exwife, Robyn Gibson, has filed a court statement declaring that she never experienced any abuse from Gibson while forensic experts have questioned the validity of the recordings. This was not Gibson’s first run-in with a tape recorder. In 1991 he was first accused of making antigay remarks in an interview with a Spanish newspaper. Gibson's 2004 film “The Passion of the Christ” sparked a debate over alleged anti-semitic imagery and overtones.

BEST FACEBOOK QUOTE Karen Walker (Will & Grace) The television show “Will and Grace” may be long gone, but the spirit of one of its lead characters, Karen Walker, lives on — at least on Facebook. With quotes like "Honey I'd suck the alcohol out of a deodorant stick," or “Honey if you’re not served in a frosted glass, never come 10 feet from these lips,” Karen will be with us for a long time to come.

Sarah Palin Sarah crashed into the Palin pop culture and political scenes in July 2008 as Sen. John McCain’s vice presidential running mate. Palin has become the person people love to hate, and for many good reasons. First, she can’t keep her stories straight. For instance, she’s not a feminist one week and is a feminist the next. She quit the Alaskan governorship to prove that she’s not a quitter. She can’t name any periodical she reads and couldn’t tell anyone what the Bush Doctrine was. Regardless, she has proven herself to be a major political force in this country, even spawning other Palin-like political candidates like Christine O’Donnell and Sharron Angle. If nothing else, she has helped to put women on a higher political pedestal, and some conservative candidates seek her endorsement. “The success of Sarah Palin and women like her is good for all women in this country,” said comedian and Sarah Palin impersonator Tina Fey, who recently received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

BEST PLACE FOR LUNCH Painted Pickle (Wilton Manors) and Pasha’s (Lincoln Road Miami Beach) Ever since it opened, the Painted Pickle on Wilton Drive has become the lunch time people pleasing place in town. Their goal is to stuff people with huge sandwiches: pastrami, corned beef, roast beef, honey smoked ham, smoked turkey, tuna, chicken and egg salad and more all on your choice of breads. Stop in for morning coffee, tea or espresso, and enjoy a hot bagel with a variety of spread choices, a plain or filled croissant or a fresh baked muffin.

BEST GOURMET MARKET Epicure Since 1945, Miami Beach's Epicure Gourmet Market has remained the best marketplace to find freshly prepared meals and gourmet foods. With three locations in Miami-Dade County, Epicure is famous for their homemade soups, bakery, deli counter and prepared foods created in their own commissary. Their prime meat, award-winning cheese department, high-end wine cellar and produce stand offer a full array of products to tease and please any palate.

BEST COFFEE SHOP Java Boys (Wilton Manors) and Tre Amici Wine & Espresso Bar (Ybor City) Coffee shops have become more than just a place to grab a cup of coffee – they’ve become social centers where people can relax, read a paper, watch a little television and talk with friends. Nicky and Steve Rose have turned Java Boys in Wilton Manors into the place to relax and get away from it. Always attentive and with great service, Java Boys has received national recognition. Java Boys offers a wide variety of coffees and other beverages such as smoothies. There is also a small bakery and sandwich selection. Tre Amici Wine & Espresso Bar at the Bunker in Ybor City is not a cookie-cutter café chain – they focus on what the community needs and not what some corporate structure wants them to do. Tre Amici offers the best coffee and wine bar Ybor City has ever seen. They proudly serve organic/fair trade coffee and espresso, delicious teas, Italian sodas, imported beer and wine, pastries and a fresh mix of Italian and Cuban light fare including their original Ybor Sandwich.

BEST PLACE FOR DINNER Le Patio (Wilton Manors) and Cityfish Restaurant (Orlando) Tucked away in a little, unpretentious corner off Wilton Drive on NE 11 Avenue is Le Patio Restaurant and Wine Bar. Though the restaurant is small in

stature, it’s big on quality. It’s Las Olas quality without the Las Olas prices. Le Patio offers a great variety of French cuisine, and the French Onion Soup is very addictive. A high percentage of their business is from repeat customers who return time and time again to enjoy one of the finest eateries in the area. Cityfish is a neighborhood seafood restaurant in Orlando that features daily fresh seafood and seasonal items. They offer a large menu of traditional and non-traditional seafood fare including seafood sandwiches. They have beer, wine and offer a full liquor bar. You have to check out their Panko and Potato Chip Crusted Broiled Sea Scallops. Cityfish represents an urban interpretation of the classic coastal fish shack and features a relaxed atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating.

BEST PLACE FOR SUNDAY BRUNCH Rosie’s (Wilton Manors) and Palace (Miami Beach) Rosie’s Bar and Grill is an institution on Wilton Drive that features outdoor or indoor dining (with an outdoor flare). Most people seem to prefer eating outside as Rosie’s is a great place to people watch. Rosie’s offers a campy atmosphere, lots of great burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, wraps and snacks and a full liquor bar. The staff is always upbeat, and they always seem to be having a good time. Rosie’s Sunday brunch is a good reason to wake up and go out on a Sunday morning. You know those places that look or make you feel like you're in part of the backdrop for a movie? Well, at The Palace on South Beach you're right in the middle of one of the most fun parts of Miami Beach's famed Ocean Drive, and you’re also right on the corner by the 12th Street Gay Beach, which offers plenty of sights with all the girls and guys walking by. The Palace features a lot of healthy wraps and fun finger foods. If you’re in the mood for breakfast, they feature an all day/every day breakfast.

Pasha’s offers healthy Mediterranean cuisine on Lincoln Road in South Beach (plus five additional locations in MiamiDade County). Their Lincoln Road location is a beautiful two-story venue with both indoor and outdoor seating. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and have a terrific champagne brunch on weekends. Pasha’s foods are all natural with no preservatives, additives, transfats or MSG.

BEST WORLD-FAMOUS EATS Joe’s Stone Crab In 1913, Joe Weiss opened up a small lunch counter on Miami Beach. At that time, Miami Beach was just a quiet, backwater town where people would stop by for a fish sandwich and fries. It wasn’t even known that stone crabs were edible, but Joe’s Restaurant decided to give it a try due to the urging of a Harvard ichthyologist in 1921. Weiss figured out how to cook them, serve them and what to serve them with. Joe’s Stone Crab was born, continuing to this day and has never looked back. Joe’s Stone Crab was mentioned so many times on the ’80s television show “The Golden Girls” that the landmark deserved (but never got) a formal co-starring role. Oh, and don’t forget their Key Lime Pie.

BEST LOCAL DINER Andrews Diner (Fort Lauderdale) and Christo’s Café (Orlando) Alice might not live here anymore, but her spirit is carried on at Andrews Diner. It’s nothing fancy — but they don’t pretend to be. Andrews serves a great meal, large portions and great service at

a more-than reasonable price. Andrews is particularly well-known for its breakfast menu, and you’d be surprised at some of the people you will see eating there before heading into their offices downtown. After a night of debauchery, there’s nothing like an early morning stop at Christo’s. Their coffee is amazing, their food is hearty, and make sure you check out their omelets or biscuits and gravy. They also have great sandwiches, and you can eat outside on their patio. There’s something utterly lovable about Christo’s Diner. It’s cozy, inexpensive, and they serve up delicious comfort food.

BEST LATE-NIGHT DINING Courtyard Café (Wilton Manors) and Pizza Rustica (Miami and Fort Lauderdale Beach) Some people think that the Courtyard Café never closes, which unfortunately, is not true. They are closed for about four hours on Monday mornings. (Don’t these people ever sleep?) Courtyard serves great food, indoors and out, with friendly, fast service. Their prices are more than reasonable, and the menu is longer than Cher’s farewell tour. You’re sure to find something you like. With locations conveniently located near Score, Twist and Cameo in the Miami area and even more in Broward County, there’s no excuse for going to bed hungry after a long night on the town. Open every day until 4 a.m., Pizza Rustica offers terrific pizzas and Italian specialties, all served quick, hot and ready to please. If you’re looking for that perfect Italian dish, Pizza Rustica will leave you begging for more.

BEST BREAKFAST Simply Delish As long as anyone can remember, there’s been Simply Delish on Wilton Drive. Everyone loves the two dining rooms with their eclectic collection of art and antiques, and everyone raves about the food, especially breakfast. Their nearendless breakfast selection is one of the best you will find anywhere, all served fresh and quick by their friendly staff.

More laid-back than many of its male bar equivalents, New Moon is a lesbian addition to the Wilton Manors nightlife scene and has a more urban flavor. Ramrod Ramrod is a Levi, leather and uniform cruise bar with a significant difference. The DJ’s are incredible, which attract South Florida's finest cruising hunks. BEST NEW BAR OR CLUB Manor Entertainment Complex

By Dennis Dean

To r p e d o on West Broward Boulevard is a great late-night venue, open until 4 a.m. every day, seven-days-a-week. Torpedo is a 20,000 watt dance club with go-go boys, dancing, cruising, and billiards. It’s not surprising that after partying at other bars until they close, the in-crowd always end up at Torpedo to keep the

The Manor Entertainment Complex is a little tricky. From outside, it doesn’t look that large, but once you step inside you’re amazed with how many rooms and different spaces it has. A person can dance in their nightclub to some of the latest acts and greatest bands. Someone could enjoy a martini in its martini bar. One can also people watch, looking down from the upstairs patio overlooking Wilton Drive. Plus, if you get hungry, they serve great food from a full menu or a quick dessert from their dessert station. Stop by the Manor, once and you’re sure to be coming back again and again.

complete resorts in Key West offering a steam room, sauna, weight room and both an indoor and outdoor Jacuzzi.

FLORIDA’S MOST ENTERTAINING PRIDE FESTIVAL Miami Beach Gay Pride

BEST DAY SPA The Grand Resort and Spa Everyone likes to be pampered every now and then and no one does it better than The Grand Resort and Spa located near Fort Lauderdale Beach. Lay back and relax as you receive one of their specialty facials, body wraps, body scrubs, massages, manicures and pedicures, waxing, derm-abrasion or hair styling. You can also enjoy their oversized heated pool which is great for lap swimming or carelessly floating on mats soaking up the South Florida sun. The hotel also boasts a fully-equipped fitness center.

FAVORITE CLOTHING DESIGNER D&G Dolce & Gabbana, also known as D & G, is a famed Italian fashion house started by the Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in Milan, Italy. Their clothing designs are usually black in color and geometric in shape. Dolce & Gabbana actually includes two fashion lines: Dolce & Gabbana and D & G. Dolce and Gabbana specializes in luxury items more influenced by designers and is more formal and “timeless,” responding to long-term trends rather than seasonal changes. The D & G line is the more casual line and attempts to set trends. The line includes jackets, pants, denim, swimwear, underwear, eye glasses and fragrances.

SEXIEST UNDERWEAR BRAND 2(X)ist It’s not surprising that 2(X)ist hit the top of the list as it was one of the first underwear designers to target the gay community. (About the same time that Marky Mark showed us his tightywhities for Calvin Klein.) Known for its cutting-edge fashion, contoured shapes and superior comfort, 2(X)ist creates fashion-forward designs to fit men’s lives. Since its founding in 1991, 2(X)ist has grown to become an iconic men’s lifestyle brand with a style and fit for

every occasion and leads the evolution of fabrics, materials and technology to create better fitting underwear, apparel and accessories for the fashion-forward.

BEST LGBT BOUTIQUE Bottoms & Tops Bottoms & Tops has two stores – the main boutique in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors and its outlet store a few blocks down Wilton Drive next to Sidelines. Both stores offer the top trends in fashion at the lowest prices on denim, shirts, swimwear, underwear, watches, jewelry and gift items. Owner Jon Anthony knows the value of a dollar and negotiates the best possible prices when purchasing for his stores and passes those savings on to his loyal customers. There are also great sales always going on, so keep an eye out for the sales racks. Of course, Bottoms & Tops also includes the D & G and 2(X)ist brands along with dozens of other designers.

Though only looking toward its third year, Miami Beach Pride has become the mostanticipated gay pride festival in the state. A spectacular parade moves north along Ocean Drive with plenty of floats, marching bands and walking groups. After the parade is finished, take a few steps east to the beach and enjoy the festival with live entertainment, food, drinks and more “pride” than anyone can imagine. Learning how to dance in the soft sand does takes a little getting used to but you will catch on rather quickly. If people watching is more your thing, muscle boys with their shirts off (it’s Miami Beach, after all), walk along proudly displaying their physics. Plenty of costumes and other gaiety can also be expected. Check out the exhibition booths on the dunes while the DJ’s keep the crowd and excitement levels high. It’s also a full day of family activities as tourists bring their children out to enjoy the excitement of this all-encompassing community event.

BEST GYM Island City Fitness (Wilton Manors) nd David Barton Gym (Miami Beach) After a day of tanning your body on the beach, you’re ready to tone that body, and

FLORIDAAGENDA.COM

there are two fitness gyms that were voted the best by our readers. Island City Health & Fitness in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors on Wilton Drive is the choice in Fort Lauderdale. Here you can transform your body, mind and spirit in their state-of-the-art facility. They offer experienced trainers and professional equipment. This spacious club offers incomparable amenities in a comfortable atmosphere which makes becoming fit a truly inspiring adventure. The David Barton Gym won out in South Beach, and you have your pick of three locations. The first step to a healthy body is just walking through the door — any of their three doors. The equipment is top notch: a huge selection of free-weights, top-shelf equipment from Hammer Strength and Cybex (among others) and the cardio equipment, such as elliptical trainers and treadmills.

BEST ABS Brady Frost Are they real? Has this been photoshopped? These two question come to mind when hearing abs and Brady together. Well, after 3 years of using silver, blue, purple, and all the gay flag colors to showcase his abdominals, Brady has achieved the REAL look. There’s no more faking them now that he’s got ‘em. Showing off those abs with the 2(x)ist line, you can truly see why the voters have chosen Brady Frost.

BEST LGBT GUEST HOUSE Royal Palms Resort (Fort Lauderdale) and Island House (Key West) We don’t think anybody realized the impact Richard Gray would have on Ft. Lauderdale when he opened the Royal Palms Resort in 1991. Gray and his Royal Palms turned Fort Lauderdale into a major gay destination and one of the most desirable places for the LGBT community to live, work and play. Now, 20 years later, Gray is reinventing and greatly expanding his property by adding several additional locations in the same area, which will include a bar, full gym, spa, a café and much more, all within a few steps from Ft. Lauderdale’s famed Sebastian Street Gay beach. Imagine a place where everyone is gay – and you have the Island House in Key West. Island House is a very tropical and a not-sofar away all-male compound that’s safe from the influences of the outside world. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner poolside and is one of the most
