World AIDS Day gives hope for the future Campaign brings recognition to those affected by HIV/AIDS By DMITRY RASHNITSOV Since its recognition as an official disease in 1981, AIDS has killed more than 25 million people all over the world. As of 2009, as many as 33.3 million people globally were living with HIV/AIDS, according to UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS. The entire world will gather together on Dec. 1 to recog-

nize World AIDS Day and remember those who have lost the fight with one of the deadliest pandemics in recorded history. World AIDS Day is celebrated on Dec. 1 every year and originally started in 1988. It was the brainchild of James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, two public information officers for the Global Program on AIDS at the World Health Organization in Switzerland. Communities from all over the world will gather together to hold events. Many of the affairs include candlelight vigils, AIDS Quilt displays, speeches by activists

The Broward County Commission has welcomed it’s one and only Republican member to the dais after Lighthouse Point Commissioner Chip LaMarca defeated Broward County Mayor Ken Keechl Nov. 2 for the District 4 seat. LaMarca, along with new commissioners Dale Holness and Barbara Sharief, took their seats on the county commission Nov. 16. Keechl, who is openly-gay, had the sec-

ond largest constituency for an openlygay elected official in the entire country, according to the Victory Fund. But that constituency wasn’t enough to grant Keechl a win over LaMarca, who managed to pick up 24,918 votes to Keechl’s 22,678 votes. District 4 encompasses Fort Lauderdale, Wilton Manors, Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach. “The untold story is how close I came to winning,” said Keechl, who admitted

WilMa/Agenda plan public safety forum WILTON MANORS, Fla. - The City of Wilton Manors, in conjunction with the Florida Agenda, will host a public safety forum on Thursday, Dec.16., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Hagen Park Community Center. The forum is in response to the recent violent crimes that have been committed against members of the LGBT community within and near the Wilton Manors city limits. It will also address the safety concerns of all the city’s residents, especially now that holiday season has arrived. Wilton Manors Mayor Gary Resnick, the forum will help educate the public and the business community on what they should be doing to try to reduce crime, better protect themselves and be more vigilant. Law enforcement officials will be on hand to answer questions from the public. The city recently received a federal grant to add an additional police officer to the department. “As the economy continues on its current course,” said Resnick, “there is more crime in our neighborhoods and generally in our area. However, [the city] got the recent crime stats last month and it showed that some crimes are actually decreasing, which is good news.”H

Oakland Park supports anti-bullying resolution

MIAMI, Fla.- Last weekend’s SMART Ride raised $468,220 for HIV/AIDS organizations throughout the state. The Ride was a 165-mile bicycle trek from Miami to Key West and had 269 riders and 186 crew members. Prior to this year, the Ride has raised $2.2 million, and all proceeds go to HIV/AIDS charity organizations. This year’s SMART Ride benefitted Broward House (Ft. Lauderdale), Metropolitan Charities (St. Petersburg and Tampa), Center for Positive Connections (Miami), AIDS Help (Key West), Miracle of Love (Orlando) and Comprehensive AIDS Program (Palm Beach County).H

Local HIV/AIDS activist named one of the “POZ 100” FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - POZ magazine named local HIV/AIDS activist Michael Rajner as one of the nation’s top 100 people fighting against the spread and for the treatment of HIV/AIDS. The magazine referred to Rajner as a “one-man powerhouse from Fort Lauderdale [who] is a regular on the political scene from Dade County to Capitol Hill.” POZ referred to all those named in their article as “some of the bravest, most dogged and downright effective AIDS fighters we know.”H

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. - At the Nov. 3 Oakland Park City Commission meeting, all five commissioners voted in favor of Resolution No: R-2010-174, support for legislation prohibiting discrimination and bullying. While the resolution is not a law it does officially state that the city of Oakland Park, “supports legislation that prohibits discrimination and bullying in general” and “in particular when it is due to their gender identity or sexual orientation.” The resolution was the brainchild of Suzanne Boisvenue, Oakland Park’s vice mayor, who is a strong advocate for LGBT rights. H

WILTON MANORS, Fla. - The city of Wilton Manors has called for a planning and zoning meeting on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Hagen Park Community Center. The purpose of the meeting is to further discuss the planned G-Resort that is expected to be built on the corner of NE 15th Avenue and NE 26th Street. According to Wilton Manors City Manager Joseph Gallegos, the Development Review Committee has completed their analysis of the plans for the resort and found several issues that were code-related. The site plans for the resort have since been amended to correct those issues. G-Worldwide, the parent company for GResorts, is planning four luxury resorts, catering to the LGBT community, with Wilton Manors being the first location. H

It was a terrible year to be a Democrat.” Keechl’s loss comes as a shock in a county where registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans 549,797 to 247,181, according to the Broward County Supervisors of Elections. In addition, Keechl had amassed $590,000 in his campaign fund while LaMarca only spent $146,000. With those types of numbers, it’s clear that voter resentment for the Democratic Party played heavily into Keechl’s loss, and it’s a loss that even caught him by surprise. “I thought I was going to pull it out. But I also know that if you are not willing to lose, then you shouldn’t play the game,” Keechl said. Keechl has done a lot for the LGBT community. He is credited with adding genderidentity and expression protections to Broward County’s anti-discrimination human rights ordinance, sponsoring a county resolution seeking to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and he made Domestic Partnership Benefits a requirement for any company wanting his vote on competitive procurement contracts. He credits commissioners who came before him for laying the foundation for LGBT rights in Broward, and says he will continue to work with the current commissioners on future LGBT issues. nating wasteful spending, protecting dwindling open spaces, ensuring adequate funding for beach re-nourishment and promoting sensible development on the coast. “I am proud of the contribution I made and I know I still have a lot more to contribute,” said Keechl. “I have enjoyed the last four years and would do it all over again.” And that’s exactly what he plans to do, quite possibly as soon as 2012. But with the aftermath of the election just a few weeks behind him, Keechl said he will probably return to practicing law while he explores his options. As far as what political office he will seek, Keechl has just begun to weight his options. “I’ll make that decision as the opportunities present themselves,” he said. “People are already approaching me for various seats in 2012.” His accomplishments while in office are numerous, but that didn’t stop his opponents from criticizing his campaign. Voters say he reneged on his 2006 promise of working full time as a County Commissioner and not practicing law. He also came under scrutiny for negative ads he ran against LaMarca as well as for using campaign funds to pay the mortgage on a property he owns. In Keechl’s defense, that property was used as his campaign headquarters. But none of that deters Keechl. When asked if there is anything he would do differently during the campaign that could have resulted in a victory, he wastes no time in answering. “I can’t think of anything I would do differently. Sometimes you just come up short,” said Keechl. “Public service is in my blood.” H

The biggest reason for World AIDS Day is to remind governments and individuals around the globe that AIDS is not going away anytime soon. "Simply put, HIV is no longer on the public's radar screen, and the result is deadly serious," said C. Everett Koop, who was surgeon general in 1981 when AIDS became officially recognized by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Although ignorance about AIDS remains widespread, the irrational fear that accompanied its emergence in the early 1980s has now been replaced by a growing sense of complacency that is as dangerous.” Approximately 56,000 Americans contract the HIV-virus every year. In July 2010, President Barack Obama launched a new campaign that included reducing new HIV infections, increasing access to care and improving health outcomes for people living with HIV, and reducing HIVrelated disparities and health inequities. Pope says condoms OK for male prostitutes

VATICAN, - For the first time ever, a sitting pope has finally come out and said that condoms can be useful in helping to stop the spread of HIV, especially on the continent of Africa where more than 25 million people live with the disease. In a new book, Pope Benedict XVI says that condoms can be justified for male prostitutes seeking to stop the spread of HIV. The book, “Light of the World: The Pope, the Church and the Signs of the Times,” was released Nov. 23 and was written by German journalist Peter Seewald, who interviewed Pope Benedict for six days this past summer. The book is a stark contrast to Pope Benedict’s view in 2009, when he said the distribution on condoms in Africa actually increases the spread of HIV and AIDS. Benedict said that condoms are not a moral solution but they could be justified “in the intention of reducing the risk of infection.” Pope Benedict called it “a first step in a movement toward a different way, a more human way of living sexuality.” HIV groups throughout the world are thrilled that the pope is finally showing some progressive thinking.H

Governments remove sexual orientation from UN resolution condemning executions NEW YORK, NY - The Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly voted to remove a reference to sexual orientation from a resolution on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions. The resolution had urged nations to protect the right to life of all people, including investigating killings based on discriminatory grounds. For the past 10 years, the resolution has included sexual orientation in the list of discriminatory grounds on which killings are often based. “This vote is a dangerous and dis-

turbing development,” said Cary Alan Johnson, executive director of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission. “It essentially removes the important recognition of the particular vulnerability faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.” The decision in the General Assembly flies in the face of the overwhelming evidence that people are routinely killed around the world because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation, and renders these killings invisible or unimportant.H

WASHINGTON DC.- U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke told a group of LGBT business owners that he wants to work with them to increase the pool of LGBT businesses that can successfully compete for contract and program opportunities in the Federal Government. His comments came during the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce’s (NGLCC) seventh annual National Business and Leadership “Out for Business!” Conference. The three-day event included business symposiums, keynote speakers, panel discussions and special events that worked to connect local and national LGBT businesses with NGLCC's corporate partners to expand opportunities for growth. The NGLCC is the business advocate and direct link between LGBT business owners, corporations and government. It represents the interests of more than 1.4 million LGBT-owned businesses, partners with 125 corporations, and is the umbrella organization for 61 state, local and international LGBT chambers of commerce and businesses. Locke started his speech by emphasizing the “progress we've made combating discrimination of LGBT Americans,” but “knowing that in communities across the country, there are LGBT people young and old who still feel alone.” Locke said that the U.S. Commerce Department’s focus has always been creating jobs.H

Its not always all about us Veteren’s Day Parade in Key West not the place to cause a stir over rainbow flag

By JEREMY JONES There is a time and a place for everything, but for some reason that line often becomes blurred, which appears to be the case during this year’s Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 11 in Key West. According to the Gay & Lesbian Community Center in Key West, they were given permission to unfurl the 100foot Key West Rainbow Flag during the parade down Duvall Street. Once in the parade, GLCC President Mike Mongo says that his group, which numbered approximately 30 people made up of local students from the Gay Straight Alliance, gay veterans and supporters of the GLCC, were told they could not unfurl the flag but rather could drape up to 4-feet over the convertible they were driving down Duvall for the parade. Mongo says they were told by the Key West Police Department that if they didn’t comply they would be

removed from the parade. Needless to say, the action led to some hard feelings and a few city commissioners walking out in “protest.” However, Commissioner Jimmy Weekly said he walked out because he was told the GLCC wasn’t allowed to have the flag in the parade at all, which obviously wasn’t the case. Without having all the facts, it’s easy to immediately cry foul against the Navy, who was in charge of the parade. And even with all the facts, some people still will say “we were wronged.” But let’s take a step back and really look at the situation and stop thinking about ourselves all the time. This was a Veteran’s Day Parade, honoring veterans who fight, have fought and have died for our country. True, there are many gay and lesbian veterans, but the parade was not about being gay or lesbian or even straight for that matter. It was about taking a day to remember and honor those veterans regardless of their sexual orientation. To be honest, the Navy was right to ask that the flag be reduced to 4-feet. After all, they did not say the flag or GLCC couldn’t be in the parade.

We complain about being labeled, whether it be butch, queen, top or bottom. Yet we are quick to make selfish actions that welcome unwanted attention or labels. We should be able to honor and recognize one another without our sexual orientation coming into play, yet we think the world should revolve around us. Well guess what? It doesn’t and never will. Veterans Day is not about gay or straight, it’s about us coming together as a country to thank those who have stood on the frontlines to ensure our safety and the freedoms that we do have right now. The parade was not the place for a 100foot Rainbow Flag – that’s why Key West has a Gay Pride event in which they can unfurl the entire length of the flag down Duvall Street, and they do. The key here is not to look at this as something that the LGBT community was disrespected on; it’s something that all of us can learn from. Misinformation often leads to incorrect assumptions and actions. And, yes, we can be fabulous without being self-centered. God knows we don’t need any more divas.

Disillusionment & Consequences: How to move equality forward after continued political setbacks By WAYMON HUDSON Now that a little time has passed after the midterm elections, it's time for us to pick ourselves up and figure out how to move forward in a very different political climate. There has been much talk about voter disillusionment with the Democrats, especially in the LGBT community, which voted for the GOP in much higher numbers than in previous cycles – even against their own interests and rights in many cases. There is no doubt that proponents of equality are in a tough spot. We have the Democrats on one side, who constantly ask for our votes while also demanding our patience and to "wait" for our rights until it's a politically good time (which never comes despite controlling the presidency, House, and Senate). On the other side are the Republicans, a political party with discrimination against LGBT people literally written into their platform and a history of not just blocking our rights, but using us as "wedge issues" to drive out bigoted voters in elections. We have supportive lip-service or outright hostility. Not exactly the best choices, proven by the fact that even though LGBT rights are gaining broad support among the

American public, politicians continue to lag generations behind. Given this, it's no wonder our community has grown angry, disillusioned, tired, and feels betrayed on all sides as the basic American dream continues to allude us for no other reason than outdated bigotry and personal bias. But how can we move beyond those feelings, or perhaps even use them, to push forward on the equality and basic rights we need to live full, complete lives – especially given an at least two year period when the GOP is going to block any forward movement on civil rights in the House?

Be the Ally We Want The LGBT community is a small minority group, with many of our numbers unable to live openly or identify as such. As such, we need to cultivate and engage our natural allies in the fight for minority rights, personal freedom, and basic civil rights so we can have the hard numbers to make the gains we need. But we can't simply demand our fair-minded allies be there for us when we need them and not do the same in return In short, we must be the allies for others that we want for our issues. If we want our straight allies to go to bat for us, we need to do the same. Issues like fair pay for women and women's reproductive rights, anti-poverty initiatives, fair immigration reform, health care, education and many other issues that touch our

community should be part of our movement. Besides just being the right thing to do and being part of issues that directly affect members of the LGBT community, we become good allies and a group that others can count on when they need us. Building bridges to other communities that are in fights for minority rights can only help our cause as we push forward in a hard political climate. We need all the help we can get.

Taking it to the courts Let's be honest- chances for equality are stalled for awhile in Congress now that the GOP has gained control of the house. We were told to wait and they would get to our rights later in the Obama administration, but that seems unlikely to happen. So we need to continue to stop the waiting and use the system our founding fathers set up to address issues exactly like the ones we face: the judiciary. Seeing the movement on "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", the new challenges against the "Defense of Marriage Act", challenges to adoption bans, the challenge against Prop 8, and other chipping away of bigoted laws through the courts is where nearly all of our movement forward has been made. Plus, the court cases often put politicians in tough spots and force their hands on issues, helping us see where we stand with them or making them take quicker action than they like.

jean’s kitchen Sauce Dijon By JEAN DOHERTY/LE PATIO Easy recipes are always our favorites - few ingredients, quick preparation and a delicious flavor always make our day. I am giving you this amazing sauce for chicken, veal, red meats and pork. If you’re a vegetarian, you can put it on your tofu. Grab a napkin for this one – you just might find yourself salivating as you read the recipe.

Ingredients: 3 tablespoons of Dijon Mustard or the old-fashioned one with the grains 1 cup of heavy cream 1 shallot chopped small Salt & pepper 1 glass of dry white wine A big knob of butter A heaped teaspoon of flour

Directions: In a pot, melt the butter and throw in the shallots and cook 2-3 minutes. Add the flour and whisk. Throw in the glass of white wine, whisking all the time. Then mix in the mustard and the cream on medium heat. Whisk constantly until the mix is completely smooth. Add salt and pepper, and reduce heat for 3-4 minutes. Rectify the seasoning to your taste and that’s it.

Escape to White Party By GT ANGELO In the world of dance music, there are followers, and there are leaders. There are imitators, and there are innovators. There are DJs, and there is DJ Escape. “I don’t just play records, I play with the crowd. I’m always teasing people with samples and cuts of classics, new tracks and FX,” Escape declares. “I’m all about keeping things fresh. I’m always doing mash-ups of old things and making them new, and I’m always on the lookout for the newest, hottest records. Even when I play the hits, I play them in a way I guarantee you haven’t experienced them before.” You can hear for yourself on Nov. 27 when DJ Escape makes his White Party debut, spinning the White Stars party at Club Mekka. In his fifteen years in dance music, DJ Escape has racked up more accomplishments than most spinners aspire to in a lifetime: global residencies at some of the world’s largest nightclubs, original productions that got the attention of world-class disc jocks and remixes for legendary superstars such as Beyoncé, Donna Summer, Kristine W and Gwen Stefani, and he’s just getting started. The down-to-earth disc jock still recalls his first exposure to clubland, a legendary night at the famed Palladium nightclub in New York City where the music of Junior Vasquez inspired Escape not just to be a part of the house music phenomenon, but to be a driving force behind it. “Up until that point, I had been a hiphop DJ,” Escape recalls. “But Junior’s music just blew me away. It opened up an entirely new world to me. For the first time, I saw that music wasn’t just one element of a party, it was the party, and the people who understood that best were the gay crowds who appreciated sets filled with music you couldn’t hear

anywhere else.” Escape carried that inspiration into the studio, where he created the blistering original hard house production “Wer*Ship” that had DJs from coast to coast singing his praises as an up-andcoming force in the dance music movement. Suddenly the fresh-faced spinner was found in the same spotlight as timetested industry veterans and in the DJ booth at the helm of Liquid, Miami’s most popular gay club at the time. “That gig was a dream come true,” Escape remembers. “The crowd, the venue, the sound—I was able to give the crowd exactly what they wanted each time I got in that DJ booth. I didn’t plan my sets—everything just flowed through the night, and the boys in the crowd just couldn’t get enough of it.” He was awarded his first residency at Miami’s Pump Nightclub. A year later he moved to Miami’s legendary Salvation. It wasn’t long before word of Escape’s prowess in the booth traveled beyond the savvy ears of the South Beach set and back to New York where Escape was offered an A&R job at New York’s famed Groovilicious/Strictly Rhythm record label. “My time at the label exposed me to so much music,” Escape says. “I was signing the hottest new tracks during the day and then playing them at night in the clubs.” In 2003, Escape’s attention shifted from signing new dance tracks to creating them. “For the last four years I’ve really focused on the studio,” he says. “It’s like my second home now.” Teaming with soundboard dynamos Razor & Guido, Eddie Baez, Gomi, Dom Capello, Johnny Vicious & Tony Coluccio and his role model Junior Vasquez has elevated Escape’s career to the next level. “I bring what I do in the DJ booth into the

studio,” Escape explains. “The same high-energy beat that you find on my dance floor is right there in my remixes and productions.” From the studio it’s right back into the DJ booth at one of his resident spots in Brazil, Montreal or Miami, or to play his signature style at a mega-party in Paris,

Ibiza, or Japan. Wherever he is, if you’re on Escape’s dance floor, you’ll know it. There are dance floors, and then there is DJ Escape’s dance floor, and as anyone who’s spent a night moving to his high-energy sound can tell you, it’s not a place you’ll ever want to leave.
