Jim Pietrangelo, Cadet Mara Boyd, Petty Officer Autumn Sandeen and the 13,389 other people who have lost their jobs in the United States Armed Services, it’s too late, but no longer will a man or woman be kicked out of the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines for being openly gay or lesbian. The United States Senate voted Dec. 18 to repeal, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” a 17year policy that banned gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military. The same legislation had previously passed in the House of Representatives. With the help of eight Republicans, senators voted down the policy by a vote of 65-31. “As a lesbian who left the U.S. Air Force Academy in the midst of anti-gay witch hunts in the mid-’80s, the repeal of ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell’ is particularly per-
sonal,” said Nadine Smith, executive director for Equality Florida. “We commend the US Senate and our own Sen. Bill Nelson for today's passage of the ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell’ repeal measure. I look forward to the not-too-distant day when open service is the law of our nation.” Florida’s other senator, Republican George LeMieux, voted against the repeal. President Barack Obama had made it a campaign promise to repeal DADT, but many gay activists feared that he was dragging his feet this year and the repeal would not happen once a more conservative Congress took over next year. The president officially signed the bill into law on Wednesday. “By ending ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell,’ no longer will our nation be denied the service of thousands of patriotic Americans forced to leave the military, despite years of exemplary performance, because they happen to be gay,”

Sidelines to go smoke-free beginning Jan. 5 Sports bar to get a refreshed look By BOB KECSKEMETY For the first time since it opened its doors nearly five years ago, Sidelines Sports Bar in Wilton Manors will become a smoke-free establishment. The decision was officially announced Dec. 20 by owners Laurie Whittaker and Marty Kildea. In order to prepare for the switch to a smoke-free bar, Sidelines will be closed
Jan. 3 - 4 in order to reopen on Jan. 5. Whittaker and Kildea stated that, while a number of small businesses across the country face difficult and challenging times due to the nation’s harsh economic conditions, Sidelines has remained unaffected and has been able to ride the storm and remain solvent. However, they recognize that in order to sustain economic health and continue to grow, Sidelines must continue to improve and evolve. Whittaker and Kildea said that they held discussions with their staff, customers and other business people and decided to “bring a breath of fresh air” to Sidelines.

Martin Gill visits White House MIAMI – Martin Gill, the plaintiff in the successful legal challenge to Florida's anti-gay adoption ban, attended the White House Holiday Reception Dec. 16. The visit and invitation follows a direct appeal by Equality Florida to the President Obama asking him to spotlight the harm of Florida's anti-gay adoption law which has since been struck down by the courts. "I know I'm not representing just myself or even just my own children. I will be there on behalf of every child in need of a loving home and all the future families that will be formed because of our victory this year. Third District Court of Appeals decision that found Florida's adoption ban unconstitutional. The decision is binding statewide and, for the first time in 33 years, allows gay people to be considered as prospective adoptive parents in Florida. Earlier in the year, Equality Florida facilitated Gill and his boys' attendance at the Easter Egg Roll on the White House lawn. The picture of the two boys facing the oval office became a powerful emblem in the fight to end the ban. During the White House Pride event in June, Equality Florida's Executive Director Nadine Smith was able to place that picture and a note in President Obama's hand and ask for his help in denouncing anti-gay adoption law. WilMa conducts public safety forum WILTON MANORS – Last week, the City of Wilton Manors, in conjunction with the Florida Agenda, hosted a Public Safety Forum. Conducted by Wilton Manors Det. Sgt. Gary Blocker, about 50 members of the community heard how to remain safe both in their homes and on the streets. The Forum was in response to several strong-arm robberies which have recently taken place close to the city’s entertainment district as well as an alleged rape which took place just a few feet outside of the city limits on Dixie Highway. Blocker showed statistics that showed that crime rates are actually down in the city but the part of the city west of Andrews Avenue has the highest home burglary rates. A map from the police Department indicates that reported crimes are highest near the two Publix grocery stores located in the city. Blocker said that the map also included shop-lifting explaining the crime rates near the popular stores.H
Foley decides not to run for mayor WEST PALM BEACH – Former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley announced that he will not run for mayor of West Palm Beach. He made his announcement during a recent installment of his radio show and said that his decision was made after consulting with his family. Foley, a Republican, decided not to run for re-election after allegedly sending salacious e-mails to male teens who had worked as congressional pages. Criminal investigation ended without charges.H

Man cured of HIV

BERLIN – In 2007, American Timothy Brown traveled to Germany to receive an experimental adult stem cell transplant and therapy to cure his leukemia. The then HIV-positive man received quite a surprise when the procedure ended up curing his HIV. His doctors officially say his HIV status is now officially negative. In 2007, Brown received a blood transplant with new bone marrow from a man who has a gene mutation that confers natural resistance to HIV. The new bone marrow created new white blood cells that were able to fight the infection. In addition, Brown is also cured of leukemia. “It’s an interesting proof-of-concept that with pretty extraordinary measures a patient could be cured of HIV,” but it is far too risky to become standard therapy even if matched donors could be found, said Dr. Michael Saag of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. “We can't really apply this particular approach to healthy individuals because the risk is just too high.” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the procedure is too expensive and risky to be practical as a cure, but that it might give more clues to using gene therapy or other methods to achieve the same result. Globally, HIV has infected about 33 million people and has killed 25 million people since the disease was first discovered in the early ’80s. Currently more than $30 billion is spent on HIV/AIDS research, treatment and management, a figure which many experts expect to double in the next 10 years. In an earlier breakthrough this year, researchers had discovered antibodies that can protect against AIDS and said they may be able to use them to design a vaccine.H
Missouri names stretch of highway after killed gay trooper but refuses to provide partner with spousal benefits EUREKA, Mo. – On Christmas Day 2009, Missouri State Trooper Cpl. Dennis Engelhard stopped to help a disabled vehicle on Interstate 44 in Eureka. Right after he got out of his patrol car, Engelhard was struck by a passing SUV and killed instantly. Now one year later, his partner of 15 years, Kelly Glossip, has
sued the state to try and receive benefits that any spouse of an officer killed in the line of duty would receive. The State of Missouri has continually denied his request because the two were never married or civil unionized because Missouri does not recognize same-sex unions. In an interesting development, however, almost one year to the date of the accident, Missouri will dedicate a stretch of Interstate 44 in Englehard’s honor. This will not help Glossip pay the bills or care for Englehard’s 17-year-old son. “He was my true love and he always referred to me as his one and only true love and the man of his dreams,” Glossip said about his deceased partner. Glossip said he will attend the dedication ceremony, but he hopes Missouri will reconsider his case.H

LONDON – Nigel Evans, a Welsh member of the United Kingdom Parliament, has publicly announced that he is gay. While celebrities and politicians coming out in Britain is not as big of a deal as it is in the United States, Evans announcement is interesting since he managed to be absent during the vote to legalize civil unions for gays, missed another vote to permit gays to adopt and voted against equalizing the age of consent for gay sex acts. Evans said that he came out now because another lawmaker threatened to out him. “The Member of Parliament was saying to anyone who would listen, ‘Why is it that Nigel Evans leads a life whereby he is gay to some people and not others?’ … I could not afford it to be used as leverage against me. Yes Institute bringing interfaith leaders together against LGBT suicide Group presents workshops, leadership training to students By DMITRY RASHNITSOV In September an epidemic of five gay teenagers committing suicide in close succession brought the issue of bullying against LGBT youth to the mainstream of America. But for Rachel Sottile, this was not a wakeup call, this is what she deals with on a daily basis. Sottile is the executive director of YES Institute, a Miami-based organization whose mission is to prevent suicide and ensure the healthy development of all youth through powerful communication and education on gender and orientation. “At YES Institute, we work every day with both the youth who are teased to humiliation, and the youth and adults who tormented them. It is hard work to keep focused on our purpose,” Sottile wrote in a letter to the Miami Herald in October. The organization is a non-profit and provides three main area’s of service for the community: Educational workshops on gender, orientation, communication, and leadership to teachers, counselors, registered nurses, clinical social workers, and mental health professionals; student Leadership Training that empowers students to create change in their environments and connect authentically with their families; and corporate training. “Communication and education are not the easy answer people want; not the quick answer our pain seeks, but, it is the effective answer,” Sottile wrote. “YES Institute’s work is about changing hearts and saving lives on both sides of the equation.” According to statistics compiled by YES, youth who identify as gay or lesbian are twice as likely to commit suicide as their heterosexual counterparts, and if those LGBT youth are rejected by their parents, that rate jumps up to eight times

as likely to commit suicide. In addition, 31 percent of all transgender youth attempt suicide and 60 percent are victims in violent crimes. “Parents, sisters, brothers, friends, teachers, clergy and even casual observers of these tragedies, everyone on both sides of the debate who are devastated by such a senseless waste of life, all can be changed and healed with communication and education,” Sottile wrote. The organization was originally started by Connie Barden and Martha Fugate as Project YES in 1996. Today, they make more than 150 presentations per year. “As a youth, YES was a safe space for me to grow,” said Allison Tinney a former student in the leadership training program and current YES Speaker. “As a young adult, YES was a place to give back. Whoever I am, whoever I was meant to be, YES never said no.” YES is asking leaders of faith to begin working for a safe world by signing an Affirming Stand which can be found at www.yesinstitute.org. Clergy who are willing to face fears surrounding the topics of gender and orientation for the sake of young people display great leadership and vision. Already 21 congregations and hundreds of ministers throughout Florida have signed onto the affirmation. “We need programs like YES Institute that remind us that we all have a responsibility as parents, teachers, clergy, counselors, and friends to ensure the safety and dignity of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender youth,” said Nontombi Naomi Tutu, director of Race Relations Institute at Fisk College and daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize winner. President Obama signs ‘DADT’ bill into law on Wednesday REPEAL continued from Page 1 Obama said. “And no longer will many thousands more be asked to live a lie in order to serve the country they love.” Once the bill is signed into law, the president, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen will then need to certify that the repeal should be implemented. Even then, a 60-day waiting period will need to pass before DADT is truly repealed. “I welcome today's vote by the Senate clearing the way for a legislative repeal of the ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell’ law,” Gates said. “Successful implementation will depend upon strong leadership, a clear message and proactive education throughout the force. With a continued and sustained commitment to core values of leadership, professionalism and respect for all, I am convinced that the U.S. military can successfully accommodate and implement this change, as it has others in history.” While some elected officials and military personnel objected to repealing the policy while America is still in the middle of two wars, public opinion was high in favor of the LGBT community’s quest. According to a December 2010 Washington Post-ABC News poll, 77 percent of Americans say gays and lesbians who publicly disclose their sexual orienta-
tion should be able to serve in the military. Even a Defense Department study of more than 115,000 military personnel reported that 70 percent said ending the ban on gays serving openly would have a positive or neutral impact on troops. Many local and national LGBT groups had recently ramped up efforts to draw attention to the issue in front of the media and all Americans. One group that took matters particularly into their own hands was GetEqual. They used civil disobedience, including dozens of arrests of many of their members all over the country, to try and get their repeal point across. “We are thrilled today that the Senate has taken one more step toward full legal equality for all Americans,” said GetEqual Co-Founder Robin McGhee. “Today's vote is one more step forward in not only retiring this discriminatory policy, but also in the larger march toward equality and justice for LGBT Americans. While today's vote doesn't yet finalize repeal, and while the legislation is far from perfect – leaving our transgender sisters and brothers in the grip of discrimination – we are happy to have finally moved past this hurdle. Though we have many other hurdles ahead of us to truly and fully end military discrimination for the entire LGBT community, we look forward to the fight ahead to repeal this policy once and for all.” H

But there are some who are already welcoming the change, like Matty Auslander, owner of Matty’s On the Drive, which has been smoke-free since it opened its doors more than two years ago and continues to grow in popularity. “I think it’s absolutely great, and everybody’s going to be smoke-free eventually,” Auslander said. “I think it’s good for everybody. I don’t allow smoking in my place and I smoke. When I want a cigarette, I go outside.” Sidelines’ smoke-free environment will be a welcomed change for patrons who
love the theme of the bar but not the smoke-filled atmosphere often associated with the establishment. The change will most likely draw customers back who have not been in awhile due to the smoke. Moments after the Florida Agenda broke the story via Facebook and the Agenda website, users were already weighing in with comments such as, “Wow, I think I might be able to tolerate that place again!,” “ ... and here I was going to stop going there as of Jan.1, cuz [sic] the smoke was finally just getting too much for me!,” and “Thank the baby Jesus.” On the other hand, customers who enjoy lighting up while at the sports bar will be the ones who will have to adapt to the change – and quickly. Unlike bars in New York, Boston, L.A. and other gay hot spots, Florida does not outright ban smoking in bars unless a percentage of their income comes from food. A smoking ban in restaurants and most indoor workplaces in Florida went into effect July 1, 2003. H

The former president and 2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner’s comments came last week during an interview with the website bigthink.com. “Well, I think the entire population of America has come tremendous strides forward in dealing with the issue of gays,” said Carter. “Because step-bystep we have realized that this issue of homosexuality has the same adverse and progressive elements as when we dealt with the race issue 50 years ago or 40 years ago. So I would say that the country is getting acclimated to a president who might be female, who might obviously, now be black and who might be as well, a gay person.” While the country may be ready, according to Carter, it will most likely not happen in 2012 but in the very “near future.” Wayne Besen, founder and executive director of the organization Truth Wins Out (TWO), says that while he agrees that America could be ready for a gay presi-
dent, it’s not something we are likely to see anytime soon, and that a gay vice president may be first on the agenda. "I am 40 and I think there will be a gay or lesbian president in my lifetime. America will be ready for a gay vice president in about 10 to15 years and a gay president in about 20 years,” said Besen. “This is how long it will take for LGBT

Lt. Dan Choi, one of the nation's most vocal gay ex-Army soldiers, tells dot429 about his reaction to the repeal of DADT (Don't Ask, Don't Tell), the new age of gay activism, his recent hospitalization and his future. Choi's face and name have become nearly synonymous with the fight against DADT. Choi emphasizes that the repeal of DADT is not simply a triumph for the LGBT community, but for civil rights. He says, "there are few people who get to put in all this effort and see the benefit from the rewards of their labor. We know that it's a civil rights historic event, not only for gay civil rights, but for overall civil rights. Our work is not just for us, but as we take down the wall of our oppression, it really lowers the walls of other people's as well." While Choi admits that he will not be invited to the White House bill signing and has never been asked by SLDN (Servicemembers Legal Defense Network) to speak at a press conference, he explains, "I prefer not to be there at this point. It is not out of bitterness; it is really out of my sol-
dier's instinct. To seek recognition and fame is counter to the ideals of service." There are many opinions surrounding Dan Choi's role in the repeal of DADT. As a grassroots advocate, Choi believes his role is integral to the cause. "My role has changed a lot and it has confused a lot of people… my activism has turned into something of being a lightning rod for the attention to DADT nationally and internationally. I saw myself and my role as a media whore." That is not far from what Choi aspires his legacy to be, telling dot429, "I would like to be seen as somebody who made enough trouble and agitated enough that people could not ignore the situation anymore. That would be the feather in my cap." Despite being a central public figure in gay activism, Choi, who came out of the closet two years ago, suffers from the same issues that plague many people when they come out. "I'm not fully part of the gay community. I am very new to the gay community. As a military person, it was very difficult for me to embrace the diversity of our entire movement, but I quickly had to because they were embracing me. At the
same time, I am not fully there as far as feeling as if I am a solid part of the community. I feel like I am a solid part of the movement, but not the community." Last Friday morning, Choi was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with Combat PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). He explains, "I was suicidal and I finally dealt with it. I finally said that it got to be too much." According to Choi his suicidal thoughts are a composite of coming out to his family and the world, not having people he can trust, and not seeking therapy when he returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. "I am medicated," Choi says, "I am on a medication to help me sleep and to deal with my anxiety attacks." He further explains, " I have a recurring nightmare of Iraqi men with no hands and no heads asking me to help them out." "I found a truth throughout this year that I might not have seen when I first started: action and sacrifice speaks much more loudly than the best crafted, eloquent speech." With that said, Choi offhandedly mentions, "the Libertarian party has asked me to run for Senate, because I am old enough in 2012." While Choi will not confirm whether he will run, he reiterates his dedication to equal rights, stating, "success for me would be to deeply fall in love again, have a family, and really become something of a professor without portfolio for equal rights."H

Ex-gay survivor to Exodus: ‘Leave the kids alone’ By PATRICK MCALVEY As a survivor of “ex-gay” therapy, I was mortified to learn that Exodus International is shifting its focus in 2011 to children and teens. These are the people most vulnerable and defenseless to Exodus’ attacks on healthy development and psychological well-being. As I first became aware of my sexual orientation at the age of 12, I was drawn into the web of Mike Jones, one of Exodus International’s unlicensed, unqualified, untrained, unregulated and unsupervised counselors. For the next 10 years, a man who had no business counseling anyone, and who certainly should not have had access to children, set the tone for how I viewed my orientation and myself as a person. Jones passed on to me the “facts” that my attractions were sinful, that no gay person was happy, and that every gay person was addicted to drugs, alcohol and random sexual encounters. I lived in a homogeneous religious world, didn’t know any LGBT people and had no reason to believe otherwise. I fully believed Mike Jones for years. He assured me that my sexual orientation
could and should change, leading me to suffer through years of shame and self-hatred when no such change occurred. Later, when I was 19, he subjected me to prolonged hugs and even “holding therapy,” where I was instructed to lay in his arms for a solid hour to “feel the strength of another man.” He asked me inappropriate questions about my genitals and suggested I use handyman tools to become more masculine. Last year, Jones was largely discredited – his board of directors dissolved, many local churches ceased supporting his work, and he was removed as an “approved outreach group” with the Michigan Patrick McAlvery Department of Corrections. But the entire time he was victimizing me, Exodus International supported Jones’ work and continued to refer people to his “ex-gay” operation. Recently, Exodus International unveiled its plan to put targets on the backs of thou-
sands of innocent children around the country, many who already sit in pews each Sunday feeling scared and alone. The “ex-gay” group plans to utilize social media, YouTube videos, booklets, an IPhone App, and a re-branding to make sure every one of these kids hates a part of themselves and believes their orientation is perverse and an abomination. The reality is their orientation is a natural and beautiful part of who they are. Exodus International has proven they are content to sacrifice children’s identities, happiness, self-confidence and mental health, to further their lies and messages of intolerance. I know because I experienced the Exodus International nightmare firsthand. What is particularly insidious about Exodus’ ministry is that it hides behind the fallacy that it desires helping only those who face what they cynically call “unwant-

ed same-sex attraction.” The reality is the “ex-gay” industry works day and night to create cultures in families, churches, communities and governments when possible, where folks who are not heterosexual are left ostracized, alone, judged and condemned. When the lies spread by Exodus International and the “ex-gay” industry lead people to believe change is possible and necessary for God, their church or their family to love them, naturally their attractions become “unwanted.” Thankfully, there is a happy ending to my story. I escaped the destructive lies of the “ex-gay” industry and with time, good friends, and therapy, came to love and accept myself the way I am. I have been an out and proud gay man for almost five years and have found healing through sharing my story and connecting with other survivors of the “ex-gay” industry. But my heart breaks imagining other children naively falling for the same lies that ruled my life all those years. Children deserve to be loved and supported for who they are. Their young, fragile self-esteems deserve to be protected and their identities nurtured. It is my sincere hope that more and more families and churches will see the real danger Exodus International represents and choose to distance themselves and their children from Exodus’ materials, counselors and programs. Before the organization does enormous harm, it should abandon its disturbing plan to target children and teenagers in 2011.H

“I Love You Phillip Morris” By WARREN DAY No, this is not a movie about a man’s addiction to cigarettes, but rather one man’s (Jim Carrey) unending love for another man (Ewan McGregor), although he’s definitely someone who should come with a big warning label. This comedy-drama is based on a true story and, like some true stories, it is not only stranger than fiction, but also less believable. Yet it actually happened. Steven Russell was a police officer in Georgia, an organist at a conservative church and, according to his wife, “a devoted Christian family man.” In addition, he was gay and deeply closeted until a near-fatal car accident convinced him he should be true to himself. The problem is that he was also a consummate conartist whose insurance fraud landed him in prison. On his second interment he met sweet, soft-spoken Phillip Morris (two L’s, not one like the mammoth cigarette company), and true love blossomed behind prison bars. Hell bent to be together with Phillip, Russell broke out of jail four times, one time imitating a judge commuting his own sentence and another time faking his death from AIDS. He becomes famous as the “Houdini of jail breaks.” He also became famous for pulling off a series of frauds involving hundreds of thousands of dollars, which is what caused him to keep landing back in prison and to keep coming up with audacious ways to break out. The last time he was arrested, in 1998,
it was in Fort Lauderdale as he walked to his car. Jim Carrey plays Russell and is certainly capable of giving a great performance, as he proved in “The Truman Show” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” but here he’s allowed to be outrageous to the point of being obnoxious, so it’s hard to believe he could fool so many people into believing he was a lawyer, doctor, FBI agent and CFO of a health care company. Ewan McGregor, Obi-Wan Kanobi from the last three “Star Wars” films, gives the best performance as Phillip. Any actor will tell you that one of the hardest things to play is a sweet and soft-spoken soul while keeping him interesting, but McGregor does just that and offers a nice contrast to the manic Carrey. Rodrigo Santoro, the heartthrob from Brazil who gained international attention in “300” and “Love Actually,” plays Carrey’s first partner. Several scenes in the movie take place in Florida. Written and directed by the two men responsible for “Bad Santa,” this often funny film has a hard time finding the right tone for its incredible story. They want us to cheer this fool-for-love, but can’t skim over the fact that he took advantage of so many people, including the love-ofhis-life, Phillip Morris. The irony in being a con man is that you end up conning yourself more than anyone else, a fact that must now be inescapable to the ever-escaping Steven Russell. The film is 98-minutes long, rated R, and opens Christmas day. H

Cruise for a Cause to set sail and raise funds for non-profits Inaugural cruise to benefit the Poverello Center By BOB KECSKEMETY Cruise for a Cause sets sail on its inaugural cruise on New Year’s weekend as a benefit for the Poverello Center. Cruise for a Cause is part of Under the Rainbow Umbrella, a new organization designed to help other non-profit organizations raise much-needed funds. Sailing on the Norwegian Cruise Lines’s Norwegian Sky, the ship sets sail from the Port of Miami for the Bahamas at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 31, spends Saturday in Nassau, Sunday in Great Stirrup Cay and returns to
Miami at 7 a.m. on Monday morning. The price for the cruise starts at $475 per person (double occupancy) and includes: cabin; special parties and entertainment; private, open bar happy hours; New Year's Eve gala party; all meals; pre-cruise welcome party at Aragon Guest House in Wilton Manors and more. Port taxes of $80.49 per person are not included. Cruise for a Cause is being organized by Steve Champion, owner of Travel Pride. For the last seven years, Travel Pride has been organizing high-end, all-gay cruises on luxury ships. It comes at a time when non-profits, like Poverello, are searching for fundraisers to help make it during a down economy. “This will be a fun weekend at a fairly reasonable price that includes almost everything, and part of the proceeds will go to Poverello which, with all of the funding and grants that have been cut, could really use the money. That’s why we call it ‘Cruise for a Cause,’” said Champion. The goal of the cruise is to book 60 to 100
people which would encompass approximately 10 percent of the Norwegian Sky. Half of that goal has already been reached. Reservations will be accepted up to 48 hours prior to sailing. “We are very happy to have been chosen to be the beneficiary of this first cruise, especially this time of year when people are so needy and money is so tight,” said Terry Sommerville, manager of the Poverello Food Bank. “I think having regular cruises to benefit non-profit organizations is a great idea and I wish them a lot of luck.” Originally, Cruise for a Cause was to be a short, local event where interested people would take a short drive to the Port of Miami and sail, as opposed to the more expensive and elaborate Atlantis Cruises where a person would have to fly to another destination to catch the ship for a sevenday cruise. Champion believes the Cruise for a Cause trip will target a niche of people who, while want to go on a gay cruise, don’t want to
spend time on a cruise ship with thousands of other gays like the larger gay cruises offer. Instead, travelers can get a more intimate feel on this cruise, while at the same time contributing toward a good cause. There has already been interest in the cruise from people who live outside the state of Florida. “There are over 3,000 non-profit organizations out there just in Broward County,” said Champion. “The need is so great out there, especially during this period of hard economic times. A lot of non-profits don’t have grant writers and don’t have even the depth or experience to find out where to find money.” Champion does not plan to limit his cruises to gay organizations only. There will be four Cruise for a Cause events each year. After this inaugural cruise, the next cruise planned will be a benefit for the Pet Project. ‘Holiday Treasures’ proves to be music to the ears South Florida musical groups get into holiday spirit By DALE MADISON On Dec. 15, the South Florida Pride Jazz Ensemble, a component organization of the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, and the Ft. Lauderdale Women’s Chorus took the stage in the New River Room at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts for their “Holiday Treasures” concert. The New River Room, a 200-seat performance space, which regularly hosts the comedy dinner show “Laffing Matterz,” was the perfect space for this concert. “The intimate setting and relaxed atmosphere was new for us. Our whole goal was to have fun and get people in the holiday spirit,” said Dan Bassett, director of the Pride Jazz Ensemble. The banter between Women’s Chorus Director Todd Wiley and Bassett instantly set the mood for the evening. Keeping the bar open throughout the show helped with the cabaret-style, relaxed atmosphere. The Pride Jazz Ensemble opened the concert with a swing version of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” accompanied by a video describing the parent organization South Florida Performing Arts, which includes the Pride Wind Ensemble, Ft. Lauderdale Women’s Chorus and Ft. Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus. Definite highlights of the evening’s Courtesy, Cruise for a Cause
program were soloists James Perkowski singing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and Sara McMillan singing “White Christmas.” Perkowski, who is usually featured as a tenor, showed off his sultry baritone range beautifully while McMillan’s silky voice fit “White Christmas” perfectly. The Women’s Chorus brought the house down with “12 Days After Christmas,” which explained the fallout of receiving 12 days worth of Christmas gifts. More than a few of the birds from the original song met some horrible ends. The groups of the South Florida Performing Arts take the holidays to give back to the community. The Ft. Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus adopted six families from The Broward House, gave them a Christmas dinner, gifts and a special visit by Santa Claus. On Dec. 16, all three groups performed and caroled at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, and the Women’s Chorus sang at two retirement facilities on Dec. 18. Future events by South Florida Performing Arts will include a presentation of “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” at the Parker Playhouse with an all-male cast in March, 2011 and both the Pride Wind Ensemble and Ft. Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus’ 25th Anniversary concerts in June .H

The ever-evolving distressed real estate market By STEVE MCALEER, SFR In today’s real estate market, short sales and foreclosures have become widespread. Both are considered forms of “distressed” Inventory. In November 2008, 118 short sales and 259 REOs (single family homes) were sold in Broward County. When looking at the statistics, 2009 seems to be the height of distressed inventory. There were 222 short sales and 350 REOs sold in November 2009. However, 2010 shows a substantial decrease in sales of both short sales (183) and REOs (235). For those who aren’t familiar, a short sale is when someone is in some type of financial distress and needs to sell their home “short” of the amount of money owed on their mortgage. A foreclosure is when a lender officially sues a homeowner to take possession of the title of the home due to the homeowner being in default of their payments. Once the lender Forecloses, the lender takes title and it becomes an REO (Real Estate Owned) property. So what does this all mean? There are many projections in the media stating how long this “distressed” inventory will be out there. I have found that most, on average, say two to three more years. With the statistics above, it shows that current buyer’s already missed the best part of the market. There is still inventory and choices for the buyer’s of today, just a smaller pool of options and a lot more competition from other buyer’s. With a large and growing percentage of buyer’s looking to purchase a home

for under $200,000 along with a dwindling inventory in this price range, this segment of the market has turned more into a seller’s market. The higher the asking price of the home, however, the fewer buyer’s there are and so the more negotiating power the buyer has. On the flip side of this scenario, changes in distressed inventory have affected the seller as well. This affect can be a positive one depending on the price of the home. If they are listing their home for under $200,000, there is excess demand, so selling should be a bit easier. Over $200,000, the game changes. If you are in the market to buy real estate, you still have some great opportunity, but competition from other buyer’s looking at the same homes you are is getting fiercer. So, my best advice is to know what you want, find a Realtor that will work with you to find the best deals and inventory, and act quickly. If you are a seller and are in some type of financial distress and need to sell, talk to a certified short sale real estate specialist. You have options available to you, including a short sale or deed in lieu. If you are not in financial distress and are unsure if you should sell or what your home is worth in today’s market, call a Realtor to talk about your options. New Delhi – An Indian court has sentenced Hasibul Rehman to life in prison for murdering his roommate Tarikul after he would not bottom for Rehman. In February 2007, Tarikul fought off sexual advances from Rehman and the two got into a fight, according to the prosecution. About a week later as Tarikul lay sleeping, Rehman attacked him with a glass soda bottle, smashing it over his head and causing him to bleed to death. Rehman’s two other roommates testified that they heard Tarikul’s screams and saw Rehman run out of the house. Rehman’s defense team countered that the sexual advances never happened, and that Rehman was defending himself from his roommates. Rehman must also pay a $332 fine.H
