LGBT people remain ‘second-class’ citizens By CAMERON O’CONNOR It only took President Obama a little more than an hour to deliver his State of the Union address to Congress and the nation. It took even less time for everyone else to chime in on the speech that touched on everything from “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” job creation, the economy, LGBT equality and more. “Our troops come from every corner of this country -– they’re black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American. They are Christian and Hindu, Jewish and Muslim. And, yes, we know that some of them are gay,” said the president during his speech. “Starting this year, no American will be forbidden from serving the country they love because of who they love. And with that change, I call on all our college campuses to open their doors to our military recruiters and ROTC. It is time to leave behind the divisive battles of the past. It is time to move forward as one nation.” So how did the president do? That all depends on who you ask and what polit-

By CAMERON O’CONNOR A Miami court has dismissed claims by former television anchor Charles Perez that he was fired from his job for being gay. Perez, who co-anchored the evening news at WPLG channel 10 out of Hallandale Beach, filed a complaint against the station in July 2009 with Miami-Dade County’s Equal Opportunity Board. Perez, whose duties
at the station were scaled back which included removing him as a weeknight anchor, was going through a nasty public breakup with an ex-boyfriend at the time. He insisted he was demoted by station executives because he was gay, which led to filing of the complaint and his firing shortly thereafter. “I have satisfactorily resolved all my differences with the company,'” said Perez, who recently self-published a memoir of his life titled, “Confessions of
a Gay Anchorman.” “My professional life and my being a gay man were two cars on the road headed for collision. I was supposed to be a product with the least amount of liabilities and being gay was a liability.” In his complaint, Perez, 47, stated that, “given my age and position, their [WPLG] action would kill my value, marketability and reverse my career trajec-

WILTON MANORS – Lois Kessinger, mother of George Kessinger, founder of Georgie’s Alibi, died on Sunday, Jan. 23 in her home from cancer. Kessinger had been a community favorite since George originally opened the Club Caribbean Resort in the early 1980s. Lois, her husband George Sr. and other son Jim, worked at both the Club Caribbean and Georgie’s Alibi. A local memorial service is being planned for Kessinger for the near future.H

Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus urges action on ADAP crisis

Fort Lauderdale – Florida’s AIDS Drugs Assistance Program (ADAP), which provides public assistance to more than 10,000 Floridians who cannot afford lifesustaining AIDS drugs, will run out of funding in February. The program has a $14.5 million funding gap that could continue until the new funding year beings April 1. Additionally, there are 2,800 patients in Florida on a waiting list for AIDS medications – more than half the 5,100 patients on ADAP waiting lists around the country. U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson has been working diligently to address the ADAP crisis in Florida. On Jan. 21, he sent a letter to Florida Gov. Rick Scott urging him to make this crisis a high priority and find state resources to keep Florida’s ADAP program fully operating over the next few months. Additionally, Sen. Nelson sent a letter to President Barack Obama requesting that federal ADAP funding be increased in his next budget proposal. “Florida’s ADAP crisis is a very serious public health situation that needs to be addressed immediately. This is life and death for some individuals,” said Michael Rajner, Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus legislative director. “We commend Sen. Nelson for his tireless efforts to address the matter and hope Governor Scott will do all he can to alleviate the short-term funding gap with state resources. As a Floridian living with AIDS, I can attest to the fact that the life-saving medications patients receive from this program are vital to sustaining their health.”H
Rep. Randolph files Florida Competitive Workforce Act TALLAHASSEE – Rep. Scott Randolph (D-Orlando) filed a bill that aims to bring jobs to Florida. The Florida Competitive Workforce Act (H.B. 361) would prohibit all forms of discrimination in the workplace, including sexual orientation and gender identity. Major corporations have long known that diversity is good for business. Today, 87 percent of Fortune 500 Companies include sexual orientation provisions in their antidiscrimination policies and nearly half

include gender identity and expression. “In a time of serious economic hardship, it is imperative that we do everything we can to encourage economic growth and investment,” Randolph said. “This bill promotes smart business practices that will attract employers to our state and create jobs. The Florida Competitive Workforce Act seeks to move Florida forward.” In Florida, Pepsico, Wells Fargo, JetBlue, BlueCross BlueShield of Florida, and other billion-dollar corporations have joined with Equality Florida in the Equality Means Business project, an effort to spotlight major employers in Florida that have adopted comprehensive non-discrimination polices and have demonstrated their commitment to valuing and proactively including all employees. Domestic Partnership Act introduced in Florida House TALLAHASSEE – State Rep. Mark Pafford (D- West Palm Beach) filed The Domestic Partnerships Act (HB-337) that will provide domestic partnerships protections to committed couples throughout Florida. Florida currently ranks No. 8 in the nation, with 5.5 million people living in communities that recognize domestic partnerships, either through registries or public employer benefits. Rep. NEW YORK – “The Kids are All Right” earned four Oscar Nominations. The movie, which is about a family headed by a same-sex couple (Annette Bening and Julianne Moore), was nominated for: Best
Picture, Best Actress (Annette Bening), Best Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo) and Best Original Screenplay. “This movie puts a human face on LGBT families and has the power to change hearts and minds,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese. “Too often in the struggle for equality for our families, people forget that we are just that – families. Filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko’s movie shows that LGBT families have ups and downs and experience the same joys and frustrations as any other American family.” Julianne Moore will headline the HRC Greater New York Gala Dinner on Feb 5. Gay polo league comes to Wellington WELLINGTON, FL. – The traditional sport of polo will take on a new field of players on April 2 when the world's only Gay Polo League (host their second international Gay Polo Tournament at the Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington, Fla. The GPL will bring out their highest players to compete in a USPA governed tournament. The tournament will be comprised of 12 players and four world-class professional players. Each player will be provided with four horses, one per every seven-and-a half-minute periods throughout the six-chukker game. After such a great beginning and a warm greeting from the community after the first tournament in April 2010, the GPL believes that this event has a long shelf life. It is also encouraging to see that the president and first lady recognize that LGBT troops are very much part of the fabric of our military families. However, we need to bring more visibility and awareness to that reality too.” The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, also reacted to the president’s assertion that open service by gays, lesbians and bisexuals in the U.S. Armed Forces would begin this year. HRC President Joe Solmonese issued the following statement: “Very soon, what will matter in the U.S. military is how you do your job, not your sexual orientation. Last year the president committed to working with Congress to repeal the ban on open service by gay, lesbian and bisexual people and [the] announcement is welcome news for all Americans ready to close the book on discrimination in the ranks. Not only does repeal mean troops will be treated with the dignity and respect they deserve, but our nation will be stronger with the best and brightest able to serve in uniform. Beyond gays in the military, Solmonese expressed his concern over economic stability for LGBT people, which includes unfair taxation of health benefits and workplace discrimination.. “The issue most prevalent in [the] speech was jobs, and with discrimination in the military soon behind us, there remain a number of pressing issues for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community when it comes to economic security,” said Solmonese. “The president and Congress can do much more to ensure the economic
empowerment of LGBT people including ending the unfair taxation of partner health benefits, prohibiting workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, and ensuring that all married couples have access to the same federal benefits and protections for their families.” Rea Carey, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), echoed the comments from the HRC, and added that LGBT American are still second-class citizens who still have to deal with inequality on a daily basis, whether be at the local, state or federal levels of government. To grow the economy, said Carey, the president must ensure that the talents of LGBT people are not overlooked. “President Obama spoke pointedly … of the dire need to get our economy moving again. We couldn't agree more and urge his administration and Congress to work together to ensure that everybody — including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people — have the opportunity to contribute their talents, skills and expertise to this nation’s workforce. The repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ which the president noted, was a tremendous victory that will put an end to systemic discrimination against competent, qualified lesbian, gay and bisexual service members. But let us not settle there,” Carey said. “Fact is, the state of the union for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people remains largely one of inequality, as we can still be fired from or denied employment in many parts of the country for nothing other than bias, and marriage inequality relegates our families to second-class status. If the president is truly serious about job creation and boosting America's economic well-being, he must provide leadership and action in helping to pass employment protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and ending the costly and unjust federal marriage ban.” H

Charles’ claim that the Station discriminates against gay people is untrue and offensive.” Perez, 47, has not found an anchoring job since losing his position at WPLG,
but he has been doing some freelance journalist work with The Huffington Post. And besides finishing his book, he and his partner Keith Rinehard married last year in Connecticut. The couple, who live in Miami, also adopted a baby girl named Madeline. “After the Channel 10 experience, I felt a deep need to tell my story," Perez says. "It came from the fact that there were gay men on the air, especially if they were in traditional anchor roles – after ‘Will and Grace’ and Ellen and Rosie – who were still closeted,” Perez said. “At the end of the day I did my due diligence. Truth is the best defense. As long as what you said is true, you’ve got no problem.” H

Does A Monogamous Relationship Make Sense For Gays? Question From a Reader: "There's this guy who's better than any guy I evah thought I'd be with, and wonder of wonders, he wants us to be partners. The catch is he wants an open relationship and I want a monogamous one. Is monogamy even possible in south Florida? Any advice, PLEASE!"
Dr. Yakerty's View: This is too complicated an issue for one column, but upfront it should be said that if anyone strongly believes in one or the other of these positions, then they're seldom swayed by facts, advice, or even their own experiences. We will present only the pro-monogamy side this time, but if you'll share your thoughts and experiences on open relationships, we'll print those in two weeks. Write to DrYakerty@aol.com. Monogamists often think an open relationship can't work over the long run, while those in an open relationship believe exactly the same about monogamy. Although research in this area is difficult because people often tell you what they want to be true, rather than what is, I suspect most couples, gay or straight, are neither exclusive or open, but fall into a gray area inbetween. Namely they're generally faithful to their partners, with possibly a couple discretions. Relationships can be hard and neither monogamy or open comes with a "get-out-of-jail-free card." It's my experience as a therapist that a strong case can be made for monogamy on a common sense level. First of all, a monogamous relationship means you don't have to worry about unsafe sex. No matter how much a person in an open relationship may claim they're playing safe, they're still running the risk of being exposed and exposing their partner to over two dozen STDs. What often is not talked about is how much work an open relationship can take. Most people have a hard enough time juggling job, family, friends and one significant other. You add into that trysts and affairs and life gets complicated real quick. With people I've had in therapy, this has often been the reason they stopped their open relationship - it simply took too much time, energy and money. I can remember several couples telling me the rules that had evolved for their open
relationship, and it was exhausting just listing to them. At first it may be exciting to have sex with someone brand new, but after awhile you realize you never get beyond a certain point and you yearn for someone who knows your turn-ons and turn-offs better, and to feel something more in the act than just physical release. Casual sex is inherently superficial. Every couple who stays together for a long period of time will have some hurdles to get over in their sex life, but in an open relationship it can be easy to just go elsewhere and get your sexual needs met and never deal with them in your committed relationship. For that reason, and several others, research shows that open relationships break up more often than monogamous ones. The lesser the commitment
t o each other the easier it is to end it. The biggest affirmation may be the serenity and security that comes with having a zone of intimacy that you share with no other person than your partner, and she or he shares with no one but you. It's no accident that in the Bible the euphemism for intercourse is some version of the word know, as in "Jacob knew Rachel." These ancient writers were recognizing a fundamental truth that sex is a lot more than mere mechanics, but offers the possibility of knowing a person and allowing yourself to be known at a unique and intimate level. If you want your relationship to be special, there must be something special that separates it from all the others. Some people's private parts are actually public knowledge.
There may also be a generational divide on this issue, but not in the way you might expect. Many gays over 45 grew up in a time of repression and often had to seek outlets at truck stops, bathhouses, back rooms, or other quick hook-ups. The pattern for a certain type of sex was set early and they may find it harder to "settle down." The younger generation grew up with a different kind of pattern and with the knowledge that gay LTRs do exist. Research shows they may be more open to a monogamous relationship with the right person than the older generation. Now there might be a good reason for having sex outside of a committed relationship, such as your partner's health makes it impossible to perform in that way, but it's my experience that most people's motive is on the self-serving and selfgratifying side, as in "why limit yourself to one flower in the garden." Others may claim monogamy is not natural, using the same faulty analogy that was used to justify segregation ("bluebirds do not lie down with red birds"). The bottom line is that there are advantages and disadvantages to being either monogamous or open, and you need to be clear-eyed about them and decide what kind of person you want to be and what kind of relationship you want to represent. In some ways "open" is an easy way out, and easy solutions seldom lead to the best in anything. It's because monogamy is hard that it can be so rewarding. In any case, keep this in mind, it isn't enough to love another person, you have to love the relationship you have with that person. If you don't, then sooner or later it will end. You have to be brutally honest and ask yourself could you love an open relationship year after year? If you can't, then no matter how much this guy may seem like Mr. Right, this relationship will be wrong for you.

HIV: By RYAN DIXON Joshua Scott Baumgartner loved to throw a party and just let loose from time to time, but on January 20, 2011, he took his great cooking and heavy pouring with him out of this world after a month-long bout with complications from HIV/AIDS. I only knew Josh for a few months, but I can say that I will certainly cherish those months and moments I had with him. I can remember just visiting his house and next thing I know I’m being dragged out to dinner or drinks at either Alibi or Matty’s, which were his favorite watering holes. I hope the angels in heaven have strong livers and empty stomachs, because they’re certainly in for a party. Josh is survived by Luna Baumgartner, his parents Scott and Gale Baumgartner of Eddy, Texas, grandparents Leon and Leona of Brodhead, Wis., Tommy and Mattge Cheshire of Blue Ridge, Texas, many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends. I’ve been HIV-positive for a little over two years now, and know what it’s like to have to come to grips with living with this manageable but incurable disease. Josh never told any of his friends or even his family what

was going on in his life as far as HIV goes, and we’ll never know why he took this secret with him. While talking with his parents, who came in from Texas to take their son home, they wanted me to write this so that people will learn from Josh’s situation. They want people to not be afraid to seek treatment and help, both of which could have saved their son’s life. In this day in age it’s very hard to believe that I lost a 30-yearold friend to a fight against AIDS. Even though there is no cure, medicine has made many advances since the ’80s that makes living with HIV manageable and not the death sentence it was 30 years ago. With Broward County having the highest new infection rate of any other county in the country, the most important thing you can do is get yourself tested regularly so you can know where you stand, as well as protecting your partners. Knowledge is key and empowering yourself with your status, whether it be positive or negative, is the greatest tool any one single person can have in our society’s ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS. Knowing your status is so important that many prevention agencies all over South Florida do it for free. Twenty minutes is all it takes to know what you

In lieu of flowers, his parents asked me how people could make donations to and HIV/AIDS agency here in Florida that help people with medicine and advocacy. With the Florida AIDS Walk coming up on March 20, I decided to create a team that will walk in Josh’s memory. The Florida AIDS Walk family is dedicated not only to raising awareness of the fact that more than 167,000 Floridians are living with HIV/AIDS, but also to generating as much financial support as possible to provide the care and services that they so desperately need. The walk will begin and end at Huizenga Plaza in Fort Lauderdale. Team Bubba will be walking along hundreds of other teams and thousands of supporters in this year’s walk. Funds raised by Florida AIDS Walk will enable the expansion of free HIV testing and prevention education in Florida’s Broward and Miami-Dade counties, and provide health care and support for HIVpositive individuals throughout the state. Tarte Tatin By JEAN DOHERTY/LE PATIO This famous dessert was invented at the beginning of the 20th century by the “Demoiselles Tatin” in their restaurant at La Motte-Beuvron on the Loire River in France. It is caramelized sliced apples oven-baked in a skillet with the pastry on top; when done, it is turned upside-down so the crust is on the bottom and the apple slices – wonderfully brown, buttery and glazed with caramel – remain in a design on top. It acquired its outstanding success because it was added to the list of desserts at Maxim's, one of the most famous Parisian restaurants at that time.
INGREDIENTS – Shortcrust pastry 2 pounds of apples Half a cup of caster sugar A good knob of butter (half a stick) Pre-heat your oven to 450 degrees Peel the apples, open them into two parts, take away the core and the seeds
with a spoon and cut each half into three segments. Pour half of the sugar into a Teflon round mould of about 8 inches diameter. Place the apple segments nicely arranged on the sugar. Pour melted butter on the apple segments and then add the other half of the sugar. Put the mould on the stove top on a heat medium to hot. Be careful not to burn the apples. Cut a raw pastry circle slightly larger than the mould and make holes with a fork in several places of the pastry. Take the mould off the hob. Place the pastry disc on top of the apple segments and using a rolling pin (larger than the mould), tuck in the part of the pastry exceeding the diameter of the mould. Put the mould into the heated oven for about 35 minutes. Take the mould out of the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes, then use a small sharp knife around the vertical internal side of the mould. Place your serving dish up side down on the mould and turn over…serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream … you are a chef !H

Obama administration appoints two gays and nominates out lawyer for federal judge By DMITRY RASHNITSOV President Barack Obama last Wednesday made two administration appointments and nominated a judge – all from the LGBT community. Longtime lesbian activist Roberta Achtenberg of San Francisco was appointed to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission. She made history as the first openly gay presidential appointee during the Clinton administration, when she was named assistant secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity. Achtenberg is one of the founders of the National Center for Lesbian Rights and a former San Francisco supervisor.

"The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights is a vital voice for fairness, and Roberta Achtenberg's inclusion on the panel will be of great benefit to it and to our country,” said National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey. “As an accomplished champion of civil rights and of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, Roberta brings a critical and invaluable perspective to the table. career in public health advocacy and research has well prepared him to assume a larger role in public health service to the nation,” said Carey. “He is a former executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and was the first full time federal lobbyist on AIDS issues, just as the epidemic crested in our communities. Jeff crafted a plan to secure federal funding for AIDS research and treatment, marking the first successes in garnering federal resources to combat the AIDS crisis. Jeff ’s expertise will go a long way to inform the council on the issues facing those living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic diseases." Openly gay attorney J. Paul Oetken was nominated for judgeship on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, based in Manhattan. Oetken served in the Clinton administration as an associate counsel to the White House and once clerked for Justice Harry Blackmun. Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, weighed in on the Achtenberg appointment. “The appointment of Roberta Achtenberg to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights is history making. Comedian Jim David: Making You Laugh One Joke at a Time By TROY MALLIS Andrews Living Arts Theater presents Jim David’s "South Pathetic" through Saturday Feb. 5. "South Pathetic" tells the story of an out-of-work performer directing the worst community theater in the South in "A Streetcar Named Desire.” David plays himself as well as 10 characters. He recently spoke with us about "South Pathetic" and his career:
Can you tell us about “South Pathetic” and the variety of characters you play? It is about my experiences directing theaters. It celebrates people who live in the tiny towns who want to get into the arts or show business—it was how I was as a kid. I’m a stand up comedian, but I wanted to do a theatrical piece.
When did you know that comedy was your thing? I was a target of an “It Gets Better Video” as a kid. I got made fun of and didn’t really fit in anywhere. I auditioned for the “Wizard of Oz” and played a munchkin when I was in the fifth grade and continued doing plays through high school and college. I then went to New York to do the-
ater and it was very difficult. When I was in my late 20’s I decided to try stand up comedy. I decided if that didn’t work I was going to get out of it all together and find another career. I was good at stand up comedy and I’ve been making my living at it since 1986.
What’s changed in your career from when you first started doing stand up until now? Were you openly gay from the beginning? Well I’m better at it now and more experienced. I was the first openly gay comedian to have my own special on Comedy Central, but I wasn’t openly gay from the beginning. I didn’t have the courage, and I just wanted to be a comedian. If you are openly gay from the beginning, then that’s what people knew you as—period. I figured if I established myself and waited awhile I could be a comedian first and gay third or fourth. It’s unfortunate, but that’s the way the world sees you. When I came out nothing really happened to change my career negatively. I actually got more work performing for gay audiences.
Have you had issues with audience members during shows?
Oh yeah. They would yell things out or wait for me after the show and tell me they didn’t like what I said. I try to remind them that’s it’s just a show or a joke. It’s like what recently happened at the Golden Globes with Ricky Gervais. What did they expect? If someone comes out tells jokes with a little bit of teeth people get mad. All I have to say to them is too bad—lighten up. If you get offended—tough.
When you do shows, what do you ultimately want your audiences to take away from the show? I want them to enjoy themselves. It’s very boring if a comedian tries to just get the audience to think. If you can sneak in social comments here and there, then that’s fine; but if you are coming out preaching to the audience that’s just boring. For me it’s about the joke. It has to be a good joke. I have no agenda other than to make people laugh as much as I possibly can. With “South Pathetic” I want the audience to see the importance of the characters creating art even though they don’t have any talent. Uganda's homophobic witchhunt claims the life of a prominent rights defender Human rights organizations call for more protections By DMITRY RASHNITSOV Ugandan human rights leader David Kato was severely beaten in his home with a hammer. His body was discovered in his Kampala apartment on Jan. 26 after the attack and he died on the way to the hospital. “David Kato will be remembered for his dedication to his community and his country Uganda, where he remained a fearless and outspoken voice for the rights of LGBTI persons in the face of threats to his life,” said Tad Stahnke, Human Rights First’s director of policy and programs. “We send our deepest condolences to our colleagues in Uganda who are shocked by the killing of their charismatic friend and leader.” Kato worked as an advocate and litigation officer for Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG). In October 2010, The Rolling Stone newspaper in Uganda included Kato's name in the list of prominent gay rights activists and their contact details, with a banner over the photos calling to “Hang Them.”
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the murder of David Kato,” said President Barack Obama in a statement. “In Uganda, David showed tremendous courage in speaking out against hate. He was a powerful advocate for fairness and freedom. The United States mourns his murder, and we recommit ourselves to David’s work.” A notable supporter of the “Hang Them initiative” was David Bahati, the Ugandan parliamentarian who achieved international notoriety for introducing the “AntiHomosexuality Bill of 2009,” a bill that sought to introduce the death penalty for certain same-sex consensual acts. Commenting on the Rolling Stone article, Mr. Bahati said that the campaign “would have been very helpful to law enforcement of these people; it would have been a great source for law enforcement.” Kato was one of three litigants to initiate a court challenge to Rolling Stone and on Jan. 3 of this year, the High Court of Uganda ruled that the newspaper had vio-
lated the plaintiff ’s constitutional rights to dignity and privacy and issued a permanent injunction “The police must carry out a thorough

investigation into this attack, including into the motives behind the actions of the perpetrator,” said Paul LeGendre, HRF’s Fighting Discrimination Program director. “We are concerned by reports that the police may have hastily qualified the attack as aggravated robbery. We call on Ugandan President Museveni to send an unequivocal signal to Ugandans and to the world, condemning and demanding an impartial investigation into the murder, and taking steps to ensure the security of LGBTI activists and individuals. We can only hope that David’s murder will serve as a wake-up call to Uganda’s leaders of the dangers of silence and inaction in the face of the deadly homophobic environment that has taken root in Uganda and to which many political and religious leaders – in Uganda and abroad – have contributed." Obama noted that his administration is working on protecting all gay activists from hate in America and abroad. “At home and around the world, LGBTI persons continue to be subjected to unconscionable bullying, discrimination, and hate,” Obama said in a statement. “LGBT rights are not special rights; they are human rights. My Administration will continue to strongly support human rights and assistance work on behalf of LGBT persons abroad. We do this because we recognize the threat faced by leaders like David Kato, and we share their commitment to advancing freedom, fairness, and equality for all.” In the weeks preceding David Kato’s murder in Uganda, five members of the LGBT community in Honduras were also murdered.H

His fitness club, ScottHermanFitness.com, has over 35,000 members or “Hermanites”, as he affectionately calls them, and adds 1,000 more every week. It’s a free club, with Scott as personal trainer, providing tips and video to help all Hermanites reach their fitness goals. Here’s his “Shoulder Boulder” routine to build and define your shoulders in four simple exercises. Perform each exercise for 3 sets of 8-10 reps.
EXERCISE 1: Standing Single-Arm Dumbbell Shoulder Press Stand with your feet a bit wider than shoulder length apart and a slight bend in your knees. Next, pick up the dumbbells and hold them up by your head so that your arms elbows form 90degree angles. While keeping your head up and core tight, extend one arm to the ceiling. Once fully extended, lower arm back to 90 degrees and repeat with the other arm. Breathe OUT as you extend your arm.
EXERCISE 2: Single-Arm Dumbbell Lateral Raise Stand with your feet a bit wider than shoulder length apart and a slight bend in your knees. Rest one hand on your hip and hold the dumbbell in the other. As you

keep your head up and core tight, proceed to raise the dumbbell away from your body. Stop once your arm is horizontal to the ground. Hold for 2-3 seconds and then bring your arm back down by your side. Breathe out as you raise your arm and complete a full set with one arm before moving to the other one.

While holding the dumbbells bend over so your body is almost horizontal to the ground while maintaining an arched back. Next, as you keep your head up, core tight, and a slight bend on your elbows; begin to raise the dumbbells away from your body. Hold the movement at the top for 2-3 seconds. Breathe out as you raise the dumbbells.
EXERCISE 4: Dumbbell Front Raise Stand with your feet a bit wider than shoulder length apart and a slight bend in your knees. Hold both dumbbells in your hands. Next, keep your head up and your core as tight as you can as you raise one dumbbell, palm facing in, forward and away from your body. Hold your arm in the extended position for 2-3 seconds before lowering it back to your body. Once by your side, repeat with the other arm. Breathe out as you raise your arm.
