President Obama to no longer defend Defense of Marriage Act

By ALEX VAUGHN In an about turn in Washington DC on Wednesday, President Obama withdrew his support of the Defence of Marriage Act (DOMA). Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement, he has recommended, and the president has agreed, that the law unconstitutionally discriminates against same-sex couples who are legally married but whose status is not recognized by the federal government.

"Given a number of factors, including a documented history of discrimination," Holder continued, the administration has concluded that classifications based on sexual orientation must be subject to a higher constitutional standard than ordinary laws. And the federal Defense of Marriage Act does not meet that test.

The Attorney General acknowledged in the statement that, “Much of the legal

landscape has changed in the 15 years since Congress passed DOMA. The Supreme Court has ruled that laws criminalizing homosexual conduct are unconstitutional. Congress has repealed the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. Several lower courts have ruled DOMA itself to be unconstitutional.”

In the two years of Obama’s administration, Holder said,“ the Department of Justice has defended Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act on several occasions in federal court. Each of those cases evaluating Section 3 was considered in jurisdictions in which binding circuit court precedents hold that laws singling out people based on sexual orientation, as DOMA does, are constitutional if there is a rational basis for their enactment. By ALEX VAUGHN As Lady Gaga soars on the success of ‘Born this Way’, the song called ‘the new gay anthem’ by Elton John, Justin Bieber finds himself in hot water after implying that being gay is a choice. The two polar opposite pop stars are joined by the fact they are currently the only two artists in history to reach over a billion views on Youtube, and, now by the backlash from the gay community they are BOTH facing.

The 16-year-old Grammy nominated Canadian pop star made his comments in this month's issue of Rolling Stone, now on newsstands. When asked his views on being gay, Bieber responded: “It's everyone's own decision to do that. It doesn't affect me and shouldn't affect anyone else.” Bieber also told the magazine that he doesn't believe in abortion.“What about in cases of rape?” he

The Wilton Manors Police Department is seeking out individuals who have had any contact with Benigno after Wednesday, February 10, 2011 or know the location of the car he was driving, a gold 2001 Volvo, Florida license plate: 994-TUD. At this time foul play is not suspected.H

Residents call to remove Kemple TAMPA, FL – Just 24 hours after Equality Florida called for the replacement of notoriously anti-gay activist Terry Kemple from a board tasked with supporting equality, more than 700 people have contacted the Hillsborough County Commission demanding action.

By a 5-2 vote, Kemple was appointed to the Human Relations Board whose purpose is to, "encourage equality among all people."

"People are speaking up because they are outraged by the appointment of someone who opposes equality, the very thing this board is supposed to represent," said Nadine Smith, executive director for Equality Florida.

Kemple articulates an absolutist view — that homosexuals are stealing children from Christians by indoctrinating the young to gay lifestyles. He calls it the "homosexual agenda." Gay marriages pose the biggest threat of all.

LOS ANGELES, CA – The original “King of Rock and Roll” has been dethrowned by the Queens on the Fox TV show, “Glee”. The cast of “Glee” has taken over the record for the most-charted songs in the Billboard list’s 52 year archives.

Last week, “Glee” had six debuts on the Hot 100 on Billboard.com. The “Glee” cast has placed 113 songs on the chart, besting the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley who has 108 chart entries logged since the survey’s inception in 1958 and 2003. The “Queens” Have Toppled the “King”?

FORT LAUDERDALE – It must have been a barn-burner of a Broward County Commission meeting on Tuesday, February 22. While working on public policy matters, County Commissioner Chip LaMarca took some time at around 11:30 a.m. to tickle his keyboard and comment on Sun-Sentinel writer Brittany Wallman’s Facebook meanderings about stock car racing. Wallman, who reports about Broward County news for the Fort Lauderdale-based newspaper, was herself at the commission meeting, covering the proceedings for her bosses. LaMarca, who won his commission seat last year after defeating Broward County Mayor Ken Keechl – at one time the nation’s highest ranking gay elected official – entered Wallman’s FB thread when he noticed Wallman banging away at her own keys. The Commish was apparently under-impressed by whomever was addressing the county elders (“Are you posting while Broward's most famous speaker rants?,” LaMarca typed on Wallman's page). Wallman ‘fessed up immediately on her page (“full disclosure: I'm commenting while “covering” a Broward County Commisssion [sic] meeting,” she wrote), but only after acknowledging that she’d been “BUSTED!” The identity of “Broward's most famous speaker” - and the subject of LaMarca's dry posting - remains unknown.H

LOS ANGELES, CA – Merrill Lynch and Bank of America filed a 57-page court complaint that the Regent Group of Entertainment Companies and its director, Stephen Jarchow falsely represented the company’s intentions in obtaining $90-million dollars in loans.

The Regent Group includes: Out Magazine, The Advocate, Alyson Books, Gay.com and the here! subscription gaythemed cable network.

Merrill Lynch claims that in 2005 and 2006 it advanced $50 million on two loan agreements to Regent's affiliates, for them to acquire film rights and “to finance the print and advertising costs in connection with the exploitation” of the film rights, which were considered collateral, the complaint states.

Regent promised to sublicense the film rights to get licensing fees, which would be used to pay back the loans, according to Merrill.

Merrill contends that it based its loans to Regent on licensing contracts with third parties. But it claims that Regent and its affiliates “conspired to create sham license and distribution agreements to give the appearance that the films being financed were contractually entitled to a fixed revenue of a certain amount.”H

Facebook Adds New Options to User Profiles PALO ALTO, CA – Social networking giant, Facebook, added “civil union” and “domestic partnership” to options in setting up user profiles.

“Today, Facebook sent a clear message in support of gay and lesbian couples to users across the globe,” said Jarrett Barrios, President of Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

“By acknowledging the relationships of countless loving and committed same-sex couples in the U.S. and abroad, Facebook has set a new standard of inclusion for social media. As public support for marriage equality continues to grow, we will continue to work for the day when all cou-

In October 2010, Facebook partnered with GLAAD and other national LGBT organizations to create a “Network of Support,” an educational initiative that works to combat anti-LGBT cyber-bullying. GLAAD also worked with Facebook to reshape the way that the site responds to hateful, anti-LGBT comments posted on public pages.

Troops Begin Post-DADT Classes AFGHANISTAN – This week, troops in Afghanistan began to receive training to prepare for the repeal of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. A senior U.S. Marine general said that soldiers coming off the battle field will undergo formal classes, discussion groups and extensive training to make sure each person understands the new rules. Educational materials have already been distributed to senior officers. H

Group Threatens Rev. Phelps’ Group TOPEKA, KA - A website hacker group, known as Anonymous, has threatened to shut down the websites of the Reverend Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church located in Topeka, Kansas.

Previously, Anonymous has disabled sites belonging to Wikileaks’ founder Julian Assange, Visa and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Phelps and his followers have several websites including GodHatesFags.com and GodHatesAmerica.com.

The open letter to WBC from Anonymous said: “We, the collective super-consciousness known as ANONYMOUS - the Voice of Free Speech & the Advocate of the People - have long heard you issue your venomous statements of hatred, and we have witnessed your flagrant and absurd displays of inimitable bigotry and intolerant fanaticism. We have always regarded you and your ilk as an assembly of graceless sociopaths and maniacal chauvinists & religious zealots, however benign, who act out for the sake of attention & in the name of religion.”

In conclusion he noted, “The Department has a longstanding practice of defending the constitutionality of duly-enacted statutes if reasonable arguments can be made in their defense. At the same time, the Department in the past has declined to defend statutes despite the availability of professionally responsible arguments, in part because – as here – the Department does not consider every such argument to be a “reasonable” one. She was questioned for the blatant similarities of ‘Born this Way’ to Madonna’s iconic empowerment anthem, ‘Express Yourself ’. The eccentric 24 year old made an appearance on Jay Leno, fresh from winning three more Grammys. When asked about Madonna, Gaga said ‘I got an email from her people and her, sending me their love and complete support on behalf of the single and if the queen says it shall be, it shall be...’ However just days later, Liz Rosenberg, Madonna’s publicist put a statement out saying there was no such email from Madonna’s people.

Simultaneously to fans accusing her of copying the ‘Queen’, the backlash of Gaga’s ‘Gay Anthem’ spread online like wildfire.

Joseph Alexiou of The Business Insider ran a story claiming the gays have had enough of Lady Gaga.

He said, ‘I don't hate her message. I love that she has taken the issue of gay invisibility and made a big, sparkly, meatwearing deal out of it. Her refusal to be silent is refreshing and, yes, I have danced to her music, starting in 2007. It's catchy and the lyrics are easy to remember — and while it works, that's not always a good thing. Good music has staying power, and I'm not sure this stuff does.’ He then went on to address the ‘gay anthem’ aspect and how just telling people what to think wasn’t going to cut it. “Sailing through the gay blogosphere,

gay men seem to be at odds with being told what the new gay anthem is, instead of deciding it for themselves. As former club kid James St. James points out, a gay anthem becomes one "because we find ourselves empathizing with the singer's passion or pain or exuberance.

It's the realization that their pain is our pain too, that their joy is our joy..."

Daily Beast's Jacob Berstein posted his own take, Gays Turn On Lady Gaga.

Bernstein points out that Gaga may have over played her hand and that the reactions from her ‘gay’ audience was mixed and in no way all positive, he quoted, Eric Ord, an openly gay chap working in New York in commercial real estate, who said, "I think she sees herself as the gay messiah and it bugs me." According to him, the song would be like "white people writing a song about breaking free from slavery and expecting black people to worship us for it." And Aaron Newbill, a modelling agent, referred to an old quote where Gaga said she wrote the song in 10 minutes. "She should have taken at least 11," he said.

However the backlash has not slowed the Gaga juggernaut, or the dollars rolling in. The song is number 1 on the Billboard 100. The single in fact became the 1000th No.1 hit in Billboard’s 52 years to which Gaga said “It is a tremendous honor to be the 1000th No. 1 on Billboard…I would be silly not to say this is the greatest honor of my career” adding that “I am so humbled and so honored and overwhelmed by the reception to Born This Way”. The single made 448,000 sales in digital alone in the opening week breaking previous records of female artists including Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ which sold 411,000 upon its arrival. It was also the fastest selling song on itunes. H

A rose by any other name….

Facebook announced last week that they had updated their systems to allow relationship status to include ‘Domestic Partnership’ and ‘Civil Union’. There is no question attitudes towards official gay partnerships are changing in the US. Every day there is a new debate into accepting ‘gay marriage’.

In England we have Civil Partnerships which afford same sex couples all of the rights of straight married couples. The difference is solely in the name. Marriage.

From what I see one major stumbling block here and globally for that matter, is the view that marriage is only possible in the eyes of God as a religious union between a man and woman. Now whether we agree with that or not, should the question really be what we call it or the rights at stake?

If Civil Partnerships were to be brought into the US in the same format they follow in the UK. Same sex partners will be afforded key rights; immigration, health benefits, inheritance, tax and many more. Surely it is better to achieve the rights then the official name of marriage.

Many activists claim we should have equal use of the word. Perhaps they are correct, but the cost of fighting this point is preventing the importance of same sex unions from coming to the fore. Obama has stated that he, ”supports full civil unions and federal rights for LGBT couples and opposes a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage” as well as saying, “I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. For me as a Christian, it is a sacred union. You know, God is in the mix." So by that very position he is fundamentally against the word ‘marriage’, not the union.

Let’s just take a moment to think here, if the biggest issue is the word… Change it.

Once a Federal law is in place that allows a union, the foundation has been laid for continued change. Just this past week in the UK the government announced steps are being taken to allow Civil Partnerships to be blessed in houses of worship. The new laws do state that each house of worship can opt out if they choose. However this is all going in the right direction. Civil Partnerships

were brought into the UK in 2005 so in six years we are already creating a dialogue with the religious sects, who are notoriously against same sex partnerships.

America has no reason to stumble and to not follow suit. More and more states are changing their position on the issue, however I am sure by dropping the word ‘ marriage’ we could speed it up. In fact public

An August, 2010 Associated Press poll found growing support for allowing same-sex marriage in the United States. 52% of respondents answered the federal government should give legal recognition to marriages between couples of the same sex (46% in 2009), 46% was against (53% in 2009). If we take into account that removing the word ‘Marriage’ would undoubtedly enhance the position, it really becomes evident that to raise more support the battle is really about one word.

Letter to the editor Hats off to Alex Vaughn, for his excellent, so truthful article about drinking to excess in South Florida, especially Fort Liquordale.

For over forty years 4 P.M. to me was Happy Hour time wherever I might be on a given day. It never interfered with my profession during my working years.

However, with retirement and a move from the north to Fort Lauderdale, to enable me to live life as an openly gay person, it soon took its toll.

One evening in a local gay bar, attempting to drown my sorrows from a broken relationship, I allowed alcohol to overtake me to the point of verbally abusing my Ex and his

new partner, and many others in the bar that fateful night.

Falling to the floor into unconsciousness, breaking a shoulder and creating a hematoma in my brain, I was removed by paramedics to Holy Cross hospital, where I was hospitalized for over a week.

I WAS the subject matter of Mr. Vaughn’s wonderful article of 2/17/11 in the Agenda.

That evening two years ago was the beginning of a liquor free lifestyle for me. Several doctors that week informed me that my alcohol level that night in the ER was nothing short of deadly.

Today, as I experience the loss of another

When you are in a bar or meeting new people, you can still call your partner your husband or wife, and in your eyes and legally they will be your official partner just like a heterosexual husband and wife.. The FBI won’t parachute out of the sky to arrest you for not referring to each other as civil partners. Elton John calls his civil partner, David his husband. I have met couples here in Florida who have no union or official stamp and have been together for 20 years refer to each other as husbands or wives.

Americas’ attitude to gay rights is generally on an upswing, with Don’t Ask Don’t Tell being repealed, and the country is slowly moving towards allowing couples to be joined. Now is the time to get creative, to push further. Take advantage of our growing support and take each milestone and continue to build upon it. As of 2010 Domestic partnerships are recognised in Miami Dade and Broward counties, so we have a benchmark to start deciding what additional rights we need to make that a full partnership. Think about some unique campaign ideas and put them out there. ‘No H8’, The California based campaign against Proposition 8 is coming to Fort Lauderdale in mid March. Go and have a picture taken.

Photos feature subjects with duct tape over their mouths, symbolizing their voices being silenced by Prop 8 and similar legislation around the world, with "NOH8" painted on one cheek in protest. I will be there and so should you to show that here in Florida we stand up l as one of the biggest Gay meccas in the world.

Drop ‘ Marriage’ out of the equation until we have the rights, then call it whatever you like, after all it will still smell as sweet.H

Who Knew?

By SAM KNEW, MSW If there’s one word that pervades gay communities around the country its “PRIDE.” It’s symbolized with rainbow flags, public displays of affection among our love ones and the occasional parade down Main Street. But oddly enough there is one place gay and bisexual men are neglecting to show their true colors – their doctor office. New York’s Center for Disease Control (CDC) released a study showing that 4 in10 gay men were not out to their doctor. It identified minorities at the top of the list, contributing to them being less likely to be tested for infectious diseases and other illnesses.

As discussed in my recent article, “Save the Tatas: Male Breast Cancer,” when it comes to any illness, early detection is key.

However, patients and doctors share this responsibility. The CDC recommends that doctors make screening for specific infections regular practice – and it’s not all about

HIV/AIDS. Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention at the CDC, shared with the New York Times that other infectious disease, such as syphilis and gonorrhea are a “major threat to gay and bisexual men’s health.” One study showed that more than a third of men who tested positive for gonorrhea, were initially missed due to the fact doctors did not test patients from all potential points of infection (throat, genitals and rectum).

In some of these cases doctors may have been more vigilant if patients had shared their sexual practices. Fair or not, gay and bisexual men are at greater risk of some infections. 17% of these men are more likely to develop anal cancer. Additionally, contraction of human papillomavirus (HPV) (a sexually transmitted infection) increases those risks, especially for individuals with already weakened immune systems.

So what’s a guy to do? How do you find the right doctor and how do you identify yourself as a card-carrying member? For

starters, when looking for a general practitioner ask your friends for referrals or your local GLBT community center. You can also contact your insurance provider and ask them for a list of gay-friendly doctors. Many physical and mental health professionals will make this information available. It also may be easier to ask the tough questions before you make an appointment by phone.

When you contact the office ask, “Does your practice have any GLBT patients?” One benefit of this is that you don’t have to give any personal information. But most importantly, know what to ask your doctor.

Gay/Bisexual men have unique needs.

You should be able to talk with your doctor openly about your sexual practices. This includes sexually transmitted infections (STI) prevention techniques to routine medical practice, such as undergoing anal pap smears. If you’re uncomfortable asking these questions directly consider e-mailing your doctor ahead of time, or create a list you can hand to the doctor. Aside from having a healthier, more open relationship with

your doctor, these practices also may relieve increased levels of depression and anxiety.

Gay and bisexual men have been shown to be at higher risk of mood disorders – also putting them at greater risk of suicidal behavior, by a whopping 16% greater than their straight counter parts. That behavior can manifest beyond the traditional concepts – such as taking one’s life. In some cases, individuals participate high-risk sexual practices, purposely contracting and spreading infections.

The numbers alone can - and do - scare us away from the doctor. Some individuals suffer an onset of increased blood pressure just walking into the office (usually referred to white-coat syndrome). We also have our own cultural misconceptions; such as if you go to the doctor you’ll get sick. Additionally, there’s the fear of being discriminated or denied service. These are no easy hurdles for potential patients, but make no mistake – your well-being depends on overcoming them. And that’s something you can take real pride in.H

Same-Sex Marriage Update: Two Steps Forward, One and a Half Steps Back

By BOB KESCKEMETY Perhaps no state more than California expresses the confusion over the topic of marriage equality in the United States.

The status of same-sex marriage in California is unique among the 50 U.S. states, in that the state formerly granted marriage licenses to same-sex couples, but has discontinued doing so. The period of granting such licenses began on June 16, 2008, due to a ruling by the Supreme Court of California based on an equal protection argument and ended November 5, 2008, due to the passage of Proposition 8, an amendment to the California Constitution that limited marriages to those between one man and one woman.

Before the passage of Proposition 8, California was only the second state to allow same-sex marriage.

Marriages performed prior to the passage of Prop 8 remain legally recognized and retain full state-level marriage rights.

On August 4, 2010, federal judge Vaughn R. Walker, a conservative judge appointed to the federal bench by President H.W. Bush, declared the ban unconstitutional but temporarily stayed his ruling. On

August 6, 2010, both sides submitted legal briefs to Judge Walker arguing for or against a long-term stay of the ruling. On August 12, 2010, Judge Walker had scheduled to lift his stay. On August 16, 2010, 9th Circuit Court of Appeals granted the motion to stay, ordered expedited briefing on the merits of the appeal, and directed the parties to brief the issue of why the appeal should not be dismissed for lack of standing. On August 17, 2010, the same Ninth Circuit panel ordered appeals calendared for oral argument during the week of December 6, 2010, in San Francisco. The Ninth Circuit has now requested the California Supreme Court to rule on an issue related to whether the Ninth Circuit has jurisdiction to hear the case.

Same-sex marriage remains a contentious issue within the state, with samesex marriage supporters trying to get another ballot initiative in the 2012 election to return the state to granting marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Currently, five states (Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont) and the District of Columbia do allow same sex unions.. However, the U.S. government does not recognize these

marriages on a federal level. The states of New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Rhode Island do not permit same-sex marriages, but do recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.

California, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, Illinois, Colorado, Wisconsin, Maryland and Maine have bans on same-sex marriage but permit, on a state-by-state basis, certain rights such as limited rights or civil union rights. Thirty-one states have constitutional bans on same-sex marriage and/or civil unions of any kind, including Florida.

This year, there has been some movement along the lines of marriage equality: RHODE ISLAND – The Rhode Island State House Judiciary Committee recently held hearings on a bill to permit same-sex marriage in that state. The hearings on the bill included public statements: 137 people spoke in favor of the bill, 60 against. The next step is for the committee of vote on the bill which expected to pass which would then be passed on to the entire State House for discussion and vote.

HAWAII – The governor of Hawaii is expected to sign into law this week a civil unions law granting its residents full rights and privileges of marriage without actually using the term “marriage”. This bill will take effect January 1, 2012. In 1997, Hawaii was the first state to offer Reciprocal Beneficiaries which permitted same-sex couples access to a limited number of rights and benefits on a state level.

ILLINOIS – The governor of Illinois has signed a civil union law which will take effect June 1, 2011 giving its residents

the full rights of marriage.

Though there has been a momentum toward same-sex civil unions, there has also been movement against: IOWA – Republican members of the Iowa House have proposed an amendment to the state’s constitution to say that “marriage between one man and one woman shall be the only legal union valid or recognized in this state.” Iowa already permits same-sex marriage. With a 60-40 Republican majority in the House, the amendment is considered certain to pass.

However, it faces long odds in the Democratic-controlled Senate, where the leadership has consistently said they will never allow it to come up for a vote.

INDIANA - Republican lawmakers in Indiana have resumed pushing for a constitutional amendment that would shore up an existing state law banning gay marriage. A GOP-ruled House committee voted 8-4 along party lines recently to advance the proposal, which now moves to the full House for consideration. The amendment states that only marriage between one man and one woman is valid in Indiana, and prohibits civil unions by stating that a legal status "substantially similar" to marriage for unmarried people is not valid. Tallassee Tantalizes The Florida Panhandle Detour

By PAUL RUBIO Each fall, Florida’s capital city, Tallahassee, swells with thousands of students ready to take on a world of scholarship, adulthood, binge drinking, and explorative promiscuity. A few years back, national polls revealed that the city’s flagship university, Florida State University, boasted some of the hottest college guys in the world. It’s not hard to see why.

Innocent ball tossing on grassy patches looks more like a homoerotic Abercrombie & Fitch shopping bag circa 2006. Shirtless studs assert their dominance across campus, comparing pec muscles at sports games, six packs at frat parties, and fake IDs at nightclubs. The young and the beautiful congregate at the Leach (the student recreation center/gym), pumping iron and exchanging locker room butt slaps as they talk about their latest “score.”

Beyond FSU eye candy, Tallahassee has evolved as an entity far more attractive than the typical university or government town. Most recently, the unveiling of hyper-modern Hotel Duval (850.224.6000, www.hotelduval.com) ushered in an element of uber glam relatively unknown to the Tallahassee scene. The rooftop bar, Level 8, has quickly become North Florida’s answer to big city sophistication, packing the house nightly for bespoke cocktails served by gorgeous servers in a South Beach-esque setting. Pimped out contemporary suites grace levels 1 to 7 of the hotel, with impeccably stylish furnishings and amenities, including varnished tree trunk stools, oversized rain showers and a bit of tech-y fantasia via ICE, the digital in-room concierge! Hotel Duval’s trendsetting prowess is so unexpected and refreshing, flaunting a vibe, a clientele, and a product usually found in the world’s greatest metropolises.

Accordingly, a number of restaurants and bars have also upped the ante to partake in this mini renaissance.

Tallahassee’s mid-town area brings on the gastropub phenomena with Midtown Filling Station (850.224.8272, www.midtownfillingstation.com) while the Wine Loft (850.222.9914, www.thewineloft.net) matches handpicked wine selections with succulent small bites like the Shrimp and Lump Crab Empanadas and daily artisanal

cheese plates. Kool Beanz caters to the eclectic, Portland types, with an emphasis on fresh, funky, and different, living up to its amazing reputation. (850.224.2466, www.koolbeanz-cafe.com). A bit further afield, the gay owned and operated Lee’s Wine Bar (850.692.3404, 1700 North Monroe Street) facilitates an ideal commingling of gay and straight crowds over house cava and delicious wines from around the world.

Tallahassee The coolio rooms has yet to reat Hotel Duval establish an exclusively gay bar or nightclub since the closing of Brothers in 2008.

Instead, weekend gay nights have cropped up around town, fulfilling the desire to dance, drink and hook up, supplementing what cannot always be achieved online! The night begins early on Friday at Lee’s, Wine Loft, or the gay friendly, 101 restaurant (850.391.1309, www.101tallahassee.com),

known for its dirt-cheap happy hour prices. By 11p.m. Friday night, everyone checks into Rehab (926 W. Tharpe Street) for the hot Friday night party, "Relapse."

The weekend party continues with Out & Out Saturdays at Paradigm (850.224.9980, www.paradigmrestaurant.net) in the heart of downtown.

For those not prone to massive hangovers or next-day‘Haze Him’ remorse, Tallahassee offers a surprising wealth of natural and cultural heritage by day. Once considered part of the Deep South, America’s largest concentration of original plantations (71 plantations over 300,000 acres) begins in Tallahassee and ends in nearby Thomasville, Georgia, 28 miles north. Several of these plantations remain open to the public, including Goodwood Museum and Gardens (850.877.4202, www.goodwoodmuseum.org), which still operates as a working plantation. Docents indulge the curious in the sordid and splendid history of the plantation, beginning with its construction in 1837 to its southern antebellum reinvention circa 1911 by the illustrious (and stocky) socialite, Fanny Tiers. Detailed tours highlight the original, antebellum period furnishings as well as the sprawling colorful grounds, replete with centuries old oaks, Spanish moss, and manicured gardens.

The 17th century Spanish mission and Apalachee Indian settlement, Mission San Luis (850.245.6406, www.mission

sanluis.org), functions as a bizarro living museum recreating daily life during a time when these two cultures first met (though I don’t think these encounters really played out like an Epcot exhibit…).

Thirty minutes south, Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park (850.926.0700, w w w. fl o r i d a s t a t e p a rk s. o rg / WA K U L LASPRINGS) reveals a glimpse of old Florida’s natural beauty, housing several miles of protected forest along and around the largest and deepest freshwater spring in the world. Stanch protection since the 1930s has allowed generations of manatees, alligators, turtles, wood ducks, and 181 other bird species to prosper and regenerate, resulting in an ecological treasure teeming with charismatic wildlife unafraid of human presence. Yes, that means if you decide to swim in the springs, you could be quickly met by a group of curious manatees or friendly gators. Older generations may recognize the park as the jungle setting for some of the original Tarzan films starring Johnny Weissmuller, looking exactly as it did decades ago.

Opinionated & Controversial Dan Savage Gets Candid?

By TROY MAILLIS Dan Savage, Co-Founder of the “It Gets Better” Project, is making an appearance in “An Evening With Dan Savage” at Art Explosion in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, February 26 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 - $35 and can be purchased at browardcenter.org. Savage, who writes the controversial sex and relationship column “Savage Love,” also has a book coming out in March. Through various forms of media, Dan Savage has consistently pushed the envelope and has become a trendsetter in the realm of getting his point across. Dan recently spoke with Mark’s List about his upcoming appearance, his column and his new book.

You are making an appearance at Art Explosion for ArtsUnited. What can we expect from “An Evening with Dan Savage”?

Well, that depends—I'm most comfortable working in a question-and-answer format, so it's really the audience that drives evenings with me, just as they drive columns with me, and podcasts with me.

I like doing it that way because then, if the conversation gets too dirty or nutso, the audience really has no one to blame but itself.

Are you happy with the success of the “It Gets Better” Project? Why do you think it took this long for a campaign like this to come about? What were your personal experiences that helped form this campaign?

I'm touched by the success of the "It Gets Better" Project, but I wouldn't say I'm happy. I'd be happy if there were no need for something like the "It Gets Better" Project. I'd be happy if LGBT kids weren't being bullied, and there was no need for the IGBP anymore, and we could pull the whole thing down tomorrow.

And I think that if we hadn't have launched this campaign, someone would've thought of it or something similar. Clearly my husband and I weren't the only adult LGBT people or allies who were aching to reach out to hurting LGBT youth—and not all LGBT youth are hurting; in many ways, and in many places, there's never been a better time to be a queer kid than right now. It just needed a spark. We gave ourselves permission to talk to LGBT kids, and by

proxy gave all LGBT people everywhere permission to talk with these kids, and so many people leapt in, stepped up, and took action that it's obvious to me that people were waiting for someone to say, "Let's do this." If it wasn't us, someone else would've jumped in, I'm convinced.

I was bullied a bit in middle school, and a little in high school. But I didn't have it as bad as my boyfriend had it—he was brutalized. I also hear every day at "Savage Love" from LGBT kids all over the country, many of them are being bullied not just by their peers, but also by their families, and they're in so much pain—queer kids whose families reject them are eight times likelier to attempt suicide. People need to understand that rejecting your gay kid won't make him straight, but it could make him dead.

You have a book coming out in March. What will the book be about?

The book is a collection of essays—some new essays, and some adaptations from the videos on the website. We collected some of our favorites, transcribed them, edited them, and asked the folks who made them to revise them. It's powerful stuff.

We hope the book will reach kids who aren't wired, and we're hoping it will be placed in school libraries all across the country.

How has your column changed since you started it? Do you think if you started it in 2011, you would have been able to call it “Hey, Faggot”?

Well, when I started the column in 1991 the "Hey, Faggot" salutation was a reference to a roaring debate in the gay community, inspired by Queer Nation activists, about "reclaiming hate words." If we used them, if we embraced them ("Yeah, I'm a fag/dyke/sissy, so what?"), then they couldn't be used to wound us anymore. I thought the logical end-point for that reclamation process was giving straight people permission to use those words in a non-hateful way. Hence, "Hey, Faggot."

I still use the word faggot in the column—I love the word faggot—but I don't think that if I started the column today I'd use that salutation, just because the debate it referenced is long over, and the joke is over.

The thing that changed my column most was the Internet—I started doing

"Savage Love" before there was a Google, and I'm doing it now years later. Before Google, I got a lot of "What's a cockring?" questions, and "Where's the BDSM group in my area?" questions. I don't get those anymore, which is a shame, because those were easy questions! Now I get mostly questions that involve situational ethics—lots of gray. It's hard to screw up the answer to "What's a cockring?" It's easy to screw up the answer to "My husband cheated on me and I'm not sure I want to stay in this marriage."

You’ve been controversial in many of your columns, do you think there is a line that exists that can still be crossed?

I don't know—I'm always looking for lines and bursting past 'em, and I've yet to find the uncrossable line that couldn't be crossed!

Would you ever run for political office?

Yes I would, if my boyfriend would permit it, which he wouldn't, so no.

What can we expect next from Dan Savage?

You can expect me to go on a nice, long vacation.

My boyfriend-inAmerica/husband-in-Canada and I have been working round the clock on IGB since the project launched, and then the book, and now we're heading out on a book tour (which sounds like a vacation but definitely is not), so we're thinking Hawaii is next for us—a beach in Hawaii, with a cocktail waiter standing at the ready. That's also one of the ways in which it gets better! H

Mushrooms Provence Pharaohs ate mushrooms as a delicacy, Greeks believed them to be a source of strength and Chinese regarded them as health food. There are over 14,000 types of mushrooms in the world, out of which about 3,000 are edible, about 700 have known medicinal properties and around 1400 have been recognized as poisonous. Today, mushrooms are eaten by people, for their flavor and texture as well as for the health benefits they offer.

Some mushroom materials, including polysaccharides, glycoproteins and proteoglycans, modulate the immune system responses and inhibit tumor growth. Some medicinal mushroom isolates that have been identified also show promising cardiovascular, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-parasitic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic properties.

Currently, several extracts have widespread use in Japan, Korea and China, as adjuncts to radiation treatments and chemotherapy. Dietary mushrooms are a good source of nutrients, especially protein and fiber. They are also rich in mineral content and the fat or “lipid content” is very low.

Mushrooms are a low-calorie food appropriate for low-calorie dieting, usually cooked raw or with oil to provide a healthy and light starter. Here’s one that’s easy and delicious..

INGREDIENTS – -1 lb small button mushrooms -A bunch of spring onions -The juice of two lemons -1 clove of garlic, cored and crushed

-A handful of golden raisins, soaked for an hour -Fresh thyme -Fresh rosemary -A glass of white wine -1 tsp cracked pepper -Salt and pepper -Olive oil Trim and wash the mushrooms thoroughly.

In a thick heavy pot heat up 2 tablespoons of olive oil and cook your mushrooms for about 3 minutes or until all the cooking juices have evaporated.

Meanwhile, in a separate sauce pan, pour the wine, 1 tablespoon of water, half of the lemon juice, 3 tablespoons of olive oil, the cracked pepper, the herbs, the finely chopped garlic, raisins and white onions. Season with some salt and bring to the boil. Cook for about 15 minutes and then add the mushrooms. Turn the heat up and cook until the liquid reduces by 3/4 of its starting volume.

When done, pour the cooked mushrooms into a bowl and allow to cool down before refrigerating.

Just before serving your mushrooms add the left over lemon juice and give’em a good stir.
