INTERVIEW BY CHRIS AZZOPARDI

ATTENTION EVERYBODY,

@RICKY_MARTIN IS SINGLE AGAIN o A SINGLE TWEET CHANGED RICKY MARTIN’S LIFE, AND THEN IT CHANGED THE WORLD.

When the internationally famed Puerto Rican heartthrob came out in 2010, declaring himself on Twitter “a fortunate homosexual man” who’s “very blessed to be who I am,” Martin, 43, stepped out of the closet and into himself. Reflecting the free life he’s currently basking in are the raw sounds and personal soliloquies on the singer’s 10th studio album, A Quien Quiera Escuchar (To Whomever Wants to Listen). In conversation, Martin is notably laid-back, sincere and personal as he opens up about how his sixyear-long relationship with Carlos Gonzalez Abella inspired his latest music (“I love being in love”), what he’s really trying to convey with all his shirtless selfies, and the “powerful” coming out stories the LGBT community shares with him. And whether he’s ruminating on his two sons or anticipating shaking his bon-bon with more male dancers onstage, his smile radiates even on the phone. This is a new, happier Ricky Martin, and yes, we’re listening.

On behalf of the gay community, thank you for all you do. The world is a better place because of your shirtless selfies. (Laughs) Oh, man – thank you very much. I laugh so much at the reaction of the people; it’s so funny. It really is amazing.

felt amazing, but once again, just being able to talk to the media about who we are and what we want and what we need, it’s just so powerful. The equality slogan translates so easily in any language.

I get a kick out of it too. Are you more comfortable without clothes? Or do you feel it’s just your responsibility as a celebrated sex symbol? I just want to let people know how normal my life is, and I try to do it with a simple picture – that’s what Instagram is about. So the other day, I was laying in the sun and I was like, “Hey everyone, I’m here. I’m in a good place.” You know, I’m a little bit obsessed with social media, to be honest. That’s the first thing I do in the morning. I check out my Twitter, my HeyHey account, Facebook and Instagram, and I read what people have to say and what they need from me as an artist. It’s fun, man. You’ve always been a sex symbol, but how does it feel being a sex symbol for a community of gay men who know you’re playing on their team? Is it different when there’s that mutual attraction? Listen, for me, it’s about liberty and it’s about being you – me, in this case – and living life with transparency and just being. It’s so amazing to know that you have nothing to hide, man. What you see is what you get. And this is me. And I don’t wear a mask to go onstage, and the support that I’ve received from my community since I came out has been amazing. It’s one of those things that (makes) you say, “Oh my god, why didn’t I do this before?” But then again, Chris, you know how it goes--everybody accepts who they are at their own time. When I sent that tweet a few years ago just letting people know that I am gay, it was the most amazing day of my life after the birth of my kids. And it is what it is. Now my life is simple and honest and transparent, and this is me. And that’s what my social media’s about – being yourself. The ladies have obviously been infatuated with you since the beginning of your career – since you were in Menudo. But when did you first realize that LGBT fans enjoyed you as well? It’s always been there. Before I came out, the love was there, and I was very thankful. Now, when I got to work directly with the community once I came out, it went to another level and it’s share with us on guymag.net

A Quien Quiera Escuchar sounds like you at your most authentic. I hear your essence, your spirit, your zest for life. How does it feel to be able to be yourself musically? When I started recording this album, I had no idea what I wanted to talk about, which is completely different to what it was like in the past, when I said, “OK, I think I wanna get into the studio,” and I had a blank canvas in front of me and all I did was throw colors and started working with amazing producers, and they helped me. It was the most amazing psychoanalysis, to be honest, to work with other writers and co-producers who helped me to put myself in order. I started recording this album exactly a year ago in Australia, and then we went to Los Angeles, and we recorded in Miami. I also recorded in Puerto Rico. What I’m trying to say is that everything about this creative process was so organic and so relaxed, and I didn’t have pressure from anybody. I just allowed myself to open my book and I started reminiscing, remembering different experiences that I had in my personal life and being able to point out specific emotions that I’ve been through – not necessarily this year, but through my life. And then, I think, A Quien Quiera Escuchar was born, you know? I listened to it today and I’m like, “Wow – there is poetry and there is honesty in these lyrics.” And there are some powerful slogans that people are quoting through social media. People are gravitating to (these lyrics) and using them and turning them into their own slogans. Once again, it’s about honesty. It’s about vulnerability. How much of the music on this album was inspired by your own personal love life, particularly your time with ex-partner Carlos Gonzalez Abella? After six years of being in a very steady relationship with him, yes, we have a lot of stories and we have a lot of moments of love and lots of light and yes, he is part of this album. It’s not about what I’ve lived (through) this year that we broke up or even the last five years. It’s decades of allowing myself to really go back and remember specific relationships that really (affected) me in many ways. And it became music. It’s never too late.

INTERVIEW You’ll be touring all year across the world. I’m addicted! Live, do you still even perform “She Bangs”? If people ask for it, I will perform it. I would become the character in the video and I would perform it. You’ve always been flanked by female dancers. Now that you’re out and proud, does that mean that more male dancers get in on the mix? Hey, let’s be fair: Come on, it’s about equality, you know? And when I walk onstage I present different scenarios of life and, yes, I do have more one-on-one dancing with male dancers, but when you’re at a party, you just dance. It doesn’t matter who’s next to you, you grab a guy’s or a girl’s hand and you just go for it. And that’s what my show is about. It’s about freedom. And it’s about being comfortable in your own skin. That must be a great feeling for you to be comfortable enough to dance with a guy in front of millions of people. It’s greaaaaat! And the reaction of the audience is even better! (Laughs) Now that you’re back on the market, what is dating like for someone as widely known as Ricky Martin? (Laughs) Mmmm. To be honest, I love being in a relationship, Chris. I love waking up in the morning and, if you’re not with your boyfriend, (sending) that first message or text in the morning: “Hey baby, how ya doing? I hope you’re fine. I just woke up. I’m doing this and this and this today.” I loooove that. I really do. And I love picking up my phone and waiting for that reply from that text — it’s great. But at the same time, right now, I’m enjoying being single. I’m enjoying this process. I’m not saying that I don’t want to be in a relationship — I would be lying to you. I love being in love. You strike me as the hopeless romantic type. I am, I am, I am! You’re damn right about that. How often have men used a pickup line on you that references your bon-bon? Ohh, man. If someone goes there, I’d be like, “Dude, you gotta start again. I’ll give you another chance because of your pretty face.” (Laughs) Considering your own coming out experi-

40

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

ence, what would you tell your 6-year-old twin sons, Matteo and Valentino, if one or both were to come out to you one day? You know what, for us, at least in my family, that’s not an issue because that is the normal in my house. So if my kids ever tell me that they’re gay, I’ll be like, “Yeah? OK, cool! Brilliant! Bring it on.” But it all starts from the day that we’re born, and every time they ask me questions about anything – Who’s your boyfriend? How come I had two daddies? – the important thing is to answer with honesty and transparency. And it doesn’t matter how old your kids are. If they are capable of formulating a question, it’s because they are capable of receiving the answer. Have you taught them the famous Ricky hip swivel yet? Oh, it’s in their blood, buddy. There’s nothing I can do about it. It’s there. (Laughs) As an out gay man with an enormous platform, what do you hope you’ve contributed to the LGBT community? I had the opportunity to write a book that is called Me and I’m very proud to say that it is a New York Times best-selling book. There have been people who’ve come to me and said, “Because of you and because of that book, I know my father better, I know my grandmother, I know my uncle, my aunt, my sister, my brother.” And that’s it. I mean, I will always keep on talking about the importance of equality and basic human rights that we as members of the LGBT community are longing for, but to this day, and every day — the book was released about four years ago — I get a tweet or a Facebook post from someone saying, “Ricky, thank you so much for that book; it changed my life.” What do those stories mean to you? It tells me that my fears were just in my head and that I feel nothing but gratitude. And I get goose bumps, man, when I get these stories and these testimonies from people from all walks of life coming to me to say, “Listen, I was homophobic until I read your book.” It’s very powerful, and I’m very, very pleased. NON-PROFIT PROFILE

Stonewall National Museum and Archive

o Stonewall National Museum and Archive (SNMA) located at 1300 E Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale is a historical library of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender memorabilia and artifacts started by Mark Silber in 1973. By 1990, the collection grew so extensive that what was once Silber’s personal hobby became a non-profit organization. And since the hiring of Executive Director David Jobin in 2013, the organization has reached new heights by expanding to a second location last year on Wilton Drive. The Stonewall Museum Gallery in Wilton Manors has a prime spot in the heart of South Florida’s gay mecca. The gallery has invigorated existing members and enticed new benefactors and patrons. This re-

newed interest in the organization has afforded Silber and Jobin the resources to showcase high profile exhibits from across the country. The gallery officially opened Oct. 30 with the debut of a documentary project, Queer Kids, by internationally renowned photographer and filmmaker Michael Sharkey. The exhibit ran until Jan. 4 and helped to rapidly advance the organizations appeal. Currently, the gallery is collaborating wih the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York to showcase Stroke: From Under the Mattress to the Museum Walls until March 8. The exhibit, displaying gay magazine illustrations from the 1950s to the 1990s, is curated by New York-based artist Robert W. Richards and features 24 original works by 24 different artists. “The gallery is only strengthening

the (Sunrise Blvd.) library space in both library membership and in monetary donations and donations to the archive,” said Emery Grant, director of community engagement for SNMA. In fact, there have been recent donations from celebrities and public figures like Ellen DeGeneres, Michael Sam and several others. Plus, there are countless events scheduled at the library every month. For event listings at the library, visit SNMA’s website at www. stonewall-museum.org. Last Saturday, SNMA held a fundraising gala One Night with Cheyenne Jackson. The event was in cooperation with Parker Playhouse and featured Broadway star and TV actor Cheyenne Jackson as well as Sirius XM radio host Seth Rudetsky on the piano. guymagtube

BARTENDER OF THE WEEK

@JCMounduix The Next Hurricane to Hit by Jameer

baptiste

o At 22, JC Mounduix (mon-doo-icks) is no stranger to trying new things, jumping in headfirst and swinging through the forest of life screaming: “Live with no regrets!” And that he does. Raised in the Fuencarral neighborhood of Madrid, JC was born into a family with strictly conservative views. Feeling confined and unable to express his true self, JC did what most LGBT individuals do when they are presented with a window out — he jumped through it, leaving home when he was 18. Freedom arrived when he enrolled as a student at Florida International University. Inexperienced and speaking very little English, he hit the ground running, learning the language while making new friends. He joined a gay men’s fraternity on campus, Delta Lambda Phi, began to shed his skin as a foreign transplant and became a gym rat. Four years later, business degree in hand, JC earned a personal trainer’s certificate in 2013. Last March, he began power-lifting, and by the end of the year, he broke four U.S. records in powerlifting for his weight division. “I make the best out of every opportunity,” he said. He parlayed his impressive physique into modeling gigs and a job with The Opium Group — a well-respected talent management company in South Beach servicing high-end clubs. With so much accomplished in such a short amount of time, where does he see himself in five years? “I don’t really think about it,” JC said. “I live in the moment.” Now he’s in graduate school

studying business with a minor in international relations, but that hasn’t stopped the job offers from rolling in. A couple of weeks ago he expressed an interest in bartending on his highly popular Facebook page and was immediately offered two positions at local clubs. So he took the leap (again), and

after shadowing a working bartender for the last week and a half, he’s ready to tell all of his friends and followers: “Come and have a drink with me at Le Boy in Fort Lauderdale!” You can follow JC on Facebook, Vine (JCMounduix) and Instagram (@JCMounduix).

GUESTHOUSE

A Key West Gem— Equator Resort

by Jameer

o Fleming Street (aka Fleming Row) was once known for its abundance of gay guesthouses. Now only the strongest have survived. While many have disappeared, Equator Resort is still there. The clothing optional, gay male resort is one of only two all-male, gay retreats remaining on the row, and one of three in all of Key West! Having become a local fixture after more than 18 years, the resort has decided to expand rather than fold.

Equator Resort (818 Fleming Street, Key West, FL 33040; 305294-7775) just finished renovations to its all-new addition. The resort bought the old Coral Tree next door, dusted it off and folded it into their current space. The two buildings create a spacious, comfortable getaway retreat with two pools, two hot tubs and a brand new bar. This expansion puts the destination on the map as Key West’s premier all-male gay resort. According to a review in The Voice: “Dramatically restored turnof-the-century buildings, designer

All around, this is one of the finest gay resorts in Florida.” The resort offers a continental breakfast plus afternoon happy hour with complimentary drinks: wine, pina coladas, and frozen daiquiris. There is also a 15 percent discount for those men in uniform (military, police, & EMTs). As a clothing optional resort, GNI members receive a 10 percent discount.

SCREEN SAVOR

BY GREGG SHAPIRO

February Flair

o

As film franchise launches go, Kingsman: The Secret Service (20th Century Fox/Marv) almost has it all. There’s the great setup. An independent intelligence agency, run by Arthur (Michael Caine), along with Harry aka Galahad (Colin Firth), affiliated with a Saville Row tailor shop (where they make bulletproof bespoke suits), is training a new set of recruits in an estate in the English countryside. The least likely recruit, chav lad Eggsy (scorching hot Taron Egerton), is the son of a Kingsman killed in the line of duty 17 years earlier. The special effects, often tied in to fight sequences, borrow a thing or two from the Wachowski handbook, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Director Matthew Vaughn, of Kick-Ass and X-Men First Class fame, also brings his own distinctive style to Kingsman. Kingsman earns its R rating through its depiction of ultra-violence. Bullets fly like swarms of insects hitting virtually every target. Kingsman also employs a multitude of other weapons and explosives, as well as hands and fists. The scene in which Harry shoots up and obliterates a Kentucky hate church plays out like Tarantino on ecstasy. Most important is the sparkling sense of

humor at the heart of Kingsman. Not only is it full of audio and visual references to classic cinema (yes, that’s Mark Hamill as Professor Arnold and yes, that is a blade popping out of Eggsy’s Oxfords). Best of all is lisping villain Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson), a twisted Internet billionaire, whose population culling concept is couched in green rhetoric. However, Gazelle (Sofia Boutella), Valentine’s razor-legged sidekick (so to speak), is the stuff of nightmares. The bottom line is that Egerton is up to the challenge and we are almost certain to see more of the Kingsman, including Eggsy’s fellow agent Roxy (Sophie Cookson). Even the colorful and hilarious (some might say silly) conclusion doesn’t detract from the entertainment factor. Whatever you do, be sure to stick around for the film credits.

o

The non-traditional modern movie musical The Last Five Years (Radius/Weinstein) is the perfect alternative to Fifty Shades of Grey, especially for LGBT audiences. Really, who else is going to see this movie? Based on the stage musical by Jason Robert Brown, The Last Five Years features Anna Kendrick in her most mature role (and potentially best performance) as “shiksa goddess” Cathy, a struggling actress/waitress. Cathy and nice Jewish boy Jamie (the gorgeous, and often partially clothed, Jeremy Jordan), a successful young novelist, meet, marry and then split-up. In this mostly sung-through musical, each

character sings their version, providing alternating perspectives. To make it more interesting, Brown constructed the show so that Cathy is telling her version from the end to the beginning, while Jamie’s account is from the beginning to the end. They meet in the middle on the duet “The Next Ten Minutes.” With a relatively small cast and only a few choreographed numbers, The Last Five Years is an incredibly economical musical. While there aren’t any tunes that you walk out of the theater singing, Kendrick and Jordan sing the heck out of the songs. Director Richard LaGravenese (who wrote the screenplay for the cracked Barbra Streisand vehicle The Mirror Has Two Faces) does a decent job of bringing the musical to life on the big screen.

TRAVEL

BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

Accommodations to Suit Your Travel Needs

o

Tired of hotel’s hidden service fees? Repulsed by long overdue motel renovations? Discover the many new (and in some cases more affordable) lodging options to fit the needs and comfort level of all types of travelers—perhaps even you.

Home Exchange Home exchange allows homeowners to swap their property with other owners in varying locations. This type of accommodation option is usually best suited for vacationers who are comfortable lending out their home to strangers and who are planning a long-term stay. The average home exchange stay ranges between 1 to 4 weeks. Home exchanges are an affordable lodging alternative as they normally only require a membership fee for most exchange portals. The exchange provides the traveler with the traditional amenities of home (kitchen, laundry, etc.) and some even offer up some perks as part of the swap like their own personal vehicle. The two primary home exchange options are the traditional exchange and the non-simultaneous exchange. The traditional exchange occurs between two homeowners that partner with one another and travel on vacation to each other’s home at the same time. The two leading websites for a traditional exchange are Intervac and Homelink. A non-simultaneous exchange occurs when a homeowner has a vacant property available for a swap, perhaps their second residence. This exchange option allows the homeowner to swap that property at anytime without having to coordinate travel plans with a partner. This gives the homeowner free range to swap with others who have a similar arrangement. Visit the website Ivhe for non-simultaneous exchanges.

Vacation Rentals

Are you traveling with a group of friends or your family? Then a vacation rental might be a perfect fit. Vacation rentals are the private living spaces of individuals who rent out their home to travelers. This accommodation setup allows everyone in your group to stay under

one roof without feeling separated--a home away from home. Usually each travel destination has multiple vacation rental companies that house a list of rental properties to choose from. One local company here in South Florida, which specializes in waterfront rentals, is Val Gal Vacation Rentals. You can also find individual vacation rental listings on the classified website craigslist.

Short-term Room Rentals

Short-term Room Rentals act in the same fashion as vacation rentals but expand on this service by offering room requests as well. Two universal companies that provide these options to travelers are Airbnb and 9flats.com. On both sites, guests can tailor their search parameters to just look for a room or an entire living space to rent for a pre-determined time period. When renting a room, guests are able to narrow their search even further by indicating whether or not they would like a private or shared room. The benefit of a shared room is reflected in the price you pay for your accommodations. And if you choose to occupy a private room, in most cases you will be sharing a bathroom and the main living quarters with the owner of the property and perhaps other guests.

Hostels

If you travel on a budget and are incredibly social, then you should look into staying at a Hostel. Hostels are dormitory style accommodations in which guests usually shack up in multi-guest dorms. The number of guests in a single room varies from hostel to hostel. Each hostel also individually determines whether rooms are mixed or single-sexed, so you may very well be sharing a room and the hostel’s theguymag

guymagtube

facilities with the opposite-sex. Essentially, each guest is provided with their own bed and a small area (either under the bed or adjacent to the bed) for their belongings. All other facilities (bathroom, lounge, etc.) in the hostel are communal areas and are shared by all the guests staying on the property. Hostels are common around the world; however, it’s important to know that the term doesn’t have a universal meaning and can refer to other lodging arrangements depending on which country you are visiting. To avoid any miscommunications while researching the best hostel that suits your needs, you can visit websites that list hostels around the globe: hostelworld.com and hostels.com.

Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing is a relatively new concept first marketed in 2004 that transforms the customary traveling experience. This unique accommodation option combines traveling share with us on guymag.net

and social media into one convenient website, couchsurfing.com. The whole idea behind the brand is the intimate travel experience one shares with their host. The traveler literally lives with their host, sleeping on the host’s “couch” or an arranged bed situation. It’s all geared to making a new friend while you enjoy your traveling experience. There is no cost to the guest for their lodging accommodations and the host gets no monetary compensation from the company for opening up their homes to a stranger. As, couchsurfing.com likes to phrase it, their service is for “friends you haven’t met yet.” The company prides themselves on that phrase and it is the basis of their concept. It’s as if you’re crashing with a friend while you’re on vacation. You can arrange to have your host pick you up from the airport. He or she can help you learn the language. They can accompany you around town and attend different events with you. Basically, anything and everything you would do with your out-of-town friend. theguymag

o

Every once in a while you wonder into that hidden gem of a place that only the regulars know about. I was fortunate to do just that! While dining out with JL Quebbeman (host of Sunday “GOFFERS” league) and his husband Al, we happened upon a wonderful dining experience – Gigi’s Music Café. Gigi’s Music Café is a dream come to fruition for Sunrise resident Gigi Brown after she had the brilliant idea to combine her life-long love affair with great music and her delicious and eclectic family recipes that have kept friends and family clamoring for a seat at her table for years. The café’s menu boasts a fusion of Classic American dishes with a twist such as handmade Classic Rock Burgers with Homemade Garlic and Parmesan Chips ($8) or the Famous Turkey Meatloaf with Homemade Mashed Potatoes ($11). In addition to exciting daily specials, Gigi’s Old Soul Fried Chicken and Homemade Buttermilk Waffles (to die for1) ($9) will introduce this Harlem classic to a whole new audience. Rent o Jonathan Larson’s Tony Award-winning sensation Rent became a critical and commercial smash, despite the death of its creator the day before its Off-Broadway premiere back in 1996. The rock musical is a reinvention of Puccini’s classic opera La Boheme, concerning the eccentric lives of impoverished artists struggling to stay afloat in New York City’s Easy Village. Contemporary themes involving HIV/AIDS, transgender rights, and drug addiction gives the musical an edgy appeal that still finds cultural relevance to this very day. 8:00 p.m. Showtime Performing Theatre. 503 SE Mizner Blvd. Boca Raton. 33432.

Enemies, a Love Story o Isaac Bashevis Singer’s classic Nobel Prize-winning novel is the basis for the world premiere of this dark comedy, presented by the Palm Beach Opera. READING RAINBOW 10 LGBT Books to Bide Your Time Until Summer

Since Punxsutawney Phil went and ruined all our plans for an early spring, we’ve got a couple more weeks of winter to endure. That makes this the perfect time to stay indoors, curl up on the couch, and whisk yourself away to Fantasy Land with these fresh LGBT literary finds. 1 ‘ILLUSIONS’

by S.A. Ozment Does coming out in Hollywood hurt your career? Some stars say yes (Rupert Everett will talk your ear off about it), while others have gracefully transitioned from working actor in the closet to still-working actor (with even better roles) out of it. That’s just one of the facets of “Illusions,” a story about television star Skylar Murphy who’s poised to make it big – but not without a few complications along the way. Skylar’s life is turned upside down when he meets Aiden Moore, an openly gay firefighter, at a launch party for his new show. But while Aiden initially rejects Skylar (something he’s not used to), fate keeps their paths crossing when Skylar is the victim of an arson that sets of a threatening chain of events.

2 ‘THE REBELLION OF MISS LUCY ANN LOBDELL’ by William Klaber How do you make it in a man’s world if you’re a woman? When it’s 1855 and women’s rights are all but nonexistent, you dress like a dude and take what’s yours. That’s what the real-life Lucy Lobdell did on the frontier just as the Gold Rush was coming to an end. But her decision to leave her young daughter and family behind in search of a better life has bitter consequences – like public scorn, physical violence and answer-

ing to the law. This fictional take on Lobdell’s life includes newspapers articles and sources from the true life of this courageous woman who was way ahead of her time.

3 ‘BEAU, LEE, THE BOMB, & ME’ by Mary McKinley Snow day have your teen stuck inside? Hand them a copy of “Beau, Lee, The Bomb, & Me,” author Mary McKinley’s debut young adult novel that confronts several topical issues like obesity, bullying and being gay. When the going gets tough, Rusty Winters – a sarcastic but vulnerable girl with a wicked wit – finds solace in her friends, including new kid Beau Gales, whose welcome to town isn’t so warm, as they set off on a road trip to escape the harsh realities at home.

4 ‘THE CONSCIOUS SEXUAL SELF WORKBOOK’ by Melissa Jebian Fritchle Consider “The Conscious Sexual Self Workbook” an anti-“Kama Sutra.” Because rather than focus on the sexual relationship between you and your partner, this handy guide encourages you to explore your own sexual history, values and desires. Are you truly in tune with what you want from the intimacy you experience? Are you missing out on erotic situations because you’re embarrassed or hesitant to explore? Let your guard down and pursue a better sex life that starts with you. theguymag

5 ‘LADYBOY AND THE VOLUNTEER’ by Susanne Aspley Susan is like any other new graduate who jets off to Southeast Asia to “find herself” – naïve. Initially she fills her downtime while volunteering in Thailand with typical American recreation – drinking; trying to find a tall, dark and handsome Western man in a sea of shorties – but when she crosses paths with transgender Thai prostitute Christine, her world gets a whole lot bigger as the two embark on adventures with a cast of quirky characters and life-changing events.

6 ‘NOW AND YESTERDAY’ by Stephen Greco Much is made about romantic relationships between partners with a noticeable generational gap – can we stop calling the older guy “daddy” already, please? – and Stephen Greco’s new novel explores the modern nuances of these gay partnerships and what it takes for them to succeed. The reader hears both sides of the fictional love story of 28-year-old literary hopeful Will and the getting-up-there Peter within the backdrop of New York City past and present.

7 ‘ROADKILL’ by Alexandra Allred You can pick up the new YA novel-nomenon du jour about a not-so-distant dystopian future – seriously, is society doomed to a life of depression? – or you can pick up this murdermystery series starring Allie Lindell, stay-athome lesbian mom turned detective, which kicks off with “Roadkill.” There are three existing books in this serial whodunit with two more additions scheduled for release this summer and fall, respectively.

8 ‘THE TALK SHOW’ by Joe Wenke Celebrated New York Times reporter Jack Winthrop is in trouble. After agreeing to collaborate on controversial talk show host Abraham Lincoln Jones’ “Emancipation Tour,” he’s found himself in the crosshairs of a crazed share with us on guymag.net

stalker who’s putting everybody’s life in danger. Even Jones’ unconventional family – including Rita Harvey, the transgender ex-priest and LGBT activist; Slow Mo, the larger-than-life vegetarian bouncer; Donna the stripper; and Jones’ lover, media expert Danielle Jackson – are targets of the madman. Can Winthrop uncover the truth before it’s too late? Put on your investigative specs and get lost in this fast-paced and gritty thriller by Joe Wenke.

9 ‘THE MANSERVANT’

by Michael Harwood

While all your sexually deprived and desperate friends are lining up in the cold for the film version of “50 Shades of Grey,” you can stay cozy in the comfort of your own home with “The Manservant,” a modernday comedy of manners based on the audacious experiences of Michael Hardwood, personal chef to Britain’s aristocracy. For this fictionalized tale, dive into the down-and-dirty world of a dashing butler who discreetly carries out his master’s requests – and, yes, it includes a paddle.

10 ‘THE THING I DIDN’T KNOW

I DIDN’T KNOW’ by Brent Hartinger

Russell Middlebrook – who you may remember as the protagonist of Brent Hartinger’s 2003 novel “Geography Club” (there’s now a film adaptation, too; great pick for LGBT movie night with your friends) – returns in “The Thing I Didn’t Know I Didn’t Know,” the first in a new series for adults. At age 23, Russell’s living in trendy Seattle but lacks the direction and drive that seems to come easy to his friends. Enter blast-from-the-past Kevin, his high school boyfriend; eccentric screenwriter Vernie Rose, who’s vying for Russell’s attention; and Gunner, Russell’s BFF ready to set out on a search for Bigfoot. Each give Russell a lot to think about. Mikey Rox is an award-winning journalist and blogger whose work has been published in more than 100 outlets across the world. RECREATION

B-Cycling Around Broward

by Jameer

baptiste

o Feel like sightseeing around Broward this weekend, but want to ditch your car and get some exercise at the same time? Broward B-cycle has your answer. Since 2011, this eco-friendly mode of transportation has been quietly expanding throughout the county and now has 22 stations of various sizes all east of I-95 between Pompano Beach and Hollywood. Guest and member riders pay per half-hour of use and simply return the vehicles to any station when they are done.

Each bike comes equipped with adjustable seats, a front basket for storage and automatic lights for night safety. And shocker — there’s even free iPhone and Android apps for downloading that enable smartphone users to find the nearest station and determine if there are any bikes available at that location 24/7. All you need is a credit card. The perks of being a B-cycle member include discounts on usage where every first half-hour per rental is free. Members also have access to free travel and health information (distance biked, calories burned, etc.) through personal online account.

SHOPPING

Gucci, Prada, and Louis — at Haute Bargains

by Jameer

o Doug Cureton loves consignment shopping but noticed there weren’t any stores exclusively for male clients in Wilton Manors. Realizing the need and the potential draw, he went to work setting up South Florida’s only upscale men’s consignment store. Located in the heart of Wilton Manors on the drive, Some Men Like it Haute sells men’s fashion and accessories of the best and finest quality. The items are not to be mistaken with those found in your average thrift store. The only way designers like Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren make it onto store racks is through their most premier labels — the only kind of items for sale. The store only accepts apparel

74

and accessories that are like-new so customers receive the best product for their buck. Doug has also developed a nifty bargain system that helps customers save even more dollars. All items in-store for 30 days gets a red dot indicating a 25% reduction off the regular consignment price. Items in the store for 90 days get marked down for an additional 25% off (indicated by a green dot). A green dot means a discount of 50% off the consignment price. It’s a great way to save but it can be risky because the store doesn’t lay away items for purchase, so your perfect find could be snatched up before your eyes. Consignment allows both the buyer and seller to save money. Buyers save while they spend and the store makes a return on their investment from the sale of their theguymag

merchandise. If you have any items that you would like to reinvest, you can bring them in to be evaluated during siesta hours, Tuesday – Thursday, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. & 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.u.

The Top Three Best Weight Training Exercises Ever!

o

There’s nothing like variety when you go to the gym. When you’ve got a vast array of exercises to choose from, you can periodize your training program so that you can see results almost immediately without ever getting bored. Yet there are certain exercises that need to be a constant in everyone’s training regime. They are tried and true classics that will never fail to make you grow in size, strength and definition. Here they are, the classic three: the bench press, the seated military press, and the barbell squat. Each of these three is a multi-joint movement that blasts several muscle groups at a time. These powerful exercises are also great natural testosterone blasters because they require you to work your muscles deeply and relentlessly.

For massive pectorals, shoulders and triceps, nothing beats the flat bench barbell press. Lie on a flat bench with a rack and place your feet flat on the floor. Grab the barbell with an overhand grip outside shoulder width. Lift the bar off the rack over your upper chest. Lower the weight by bending your elbows until the bar barely touches your chest. Once you’ve reached the bottom, press the bar up and in an arc toward the rack, flexing your pecs until you reach starting position. To avoid injuries while benching, never lift your butt and lower back off the bench. Inhale as you lower the bar and exhale as you push it back up. Keep your shoulder blades squeezed throughout, and never bounce the weight off your chest.

The seated military press will widen those delts as well as train your traps and tricepss. Sit upright on a bench and place your feet flat on the floor. With your back slightly arched, chest up, shoulders, back and arms extended, hold a barbell with a wide overhand grip. The weight should be directly above your head. Now lower the bar in front of your head by bending the elbows until the bar is just below your chin. Press the weight back up explosively, keeping your elbows pointed out, until you reach starting position. If you have shoulder injuries, avoid bringing the bar too low – in that case, try stopping it at around the nose level. Never do this exercise as a behind the neck press or you will face rotator cuff injuries. Nothing compares to the squat for targeting lower body strength and development. Stand facing a squat rack and set the bar to about shoulder height. Position the bar across your traps and grasp it with a wide overhand grip. Stand up with the bar and take a couple of steps back, aligning your feet under your hips with toes pointing slightly outward. Now with your chest out, back slightly arched and your butt out, bend your knees and slowly lower your body (like you’re sitting in a chair) until your upper and lower legs form 90 degree angles. Once at the bottom, explode upward by pushing through your heels and contracting your glutes and quads until you’ve reached starting position. For a safe effective squat, keep your back straight and refrain from leaning over. Keep your eyes facing forward and avoid looking down at your feet in the mirror. Push from your heels and don’t roll forward on your toes. It takes sweat and determination to build your body. It also takes the right exercises and routines to produce the best results.

BUSINESS FEATURE

A Staged Home Is a Sold Home!

o Florida Stage Hands was founded in 2010 by Robert Geary MacKilligan, an Estate Agent with ONE/Sotheby’s International Realty Fort Lauderdale. The concept is a simple one. “Stage” a home that is on the market with furniture specifically put in place to make the property show at its best. In hindsight, the idea to marry the real estate and the staging business seems an obvious one, but in 2010 it was a revolutionary concept. Every seller strives to have his or her home sell quickly, because a home that sits on the market loses appeal and costs money. In today’s competitive real estate market, first impressions are everything. It’s important to impress buyers and also instill a warm, welcoming feeling the moment they walk into a home for sale. Staging is a strategic marketing tool designed to show a property in its best possible light. It can transform a “nice” home into a remarkably desirable product that sets itself apart from the competi-

tion. Staging makes a home appeal to a broad range of buyers’ tastes. And the numbers support this fact: professionally staged properties not only sell faster but command approximately 3% more in sales price. Florida Stage Hands’ interior designers use only the best and latest home decorating ideas and are highly skilled at interior decorating specifically for the real estate market. Whether a home is a bungalow or an estate, every property benefits from the magic wand of design from Florida Stage Hands. Rich Palmiere, Staging Director at Florida Stage Hands, states “Buyers often can’t envision how to decorate an empty space. We showcase each home by creating a striking ambiance, accenting its best features, compensating for any shortcomings, customized to style and scale. We utilize designer furniture, art and accessories to create a look and feel that is inviting, minimalist, clean, modern and elegant.” Palmiere combines eclectic style with attention to detail. from New York City, Palmiere brings an urban vibe to coastal living. He brings interior staging to a new level creating cohesive luxurious looks at an affordable price. According to Florida Stage Hands, after the company finishes staging a home, the average property sells in 47 days, giving merit to the company’s theme: a staged home is a sold home! The cost to stage a home depends on how much furniture is utilized in the design with the average price beginning as low as $4.00 per square foot with a three to four month contract. For the furniture buyer, Florida Stage Hands operates a retail showroom in Wilton Manors offering unique furniture, art and accessories at substantially discounted prices. Since staged furniture receives little to no wear and tear during the short period a staged home is for sale, it remains goodas-new, allowing for incredible discounts up to 75% for furniture that has essentially paid for itself— often many times over. Clever concept; clever you.
