SHAMIR Lady boy sings the blues.

he bright lights and big city atmosphere of Las Vegas formed some of the earliest memories of 21-year-old singer/songwriter Shamir Bailey. From a young age, Shamir, who is building a mononymous career like many trailblazers before him, soaked in the eclectic soundscape taking shape at the turn of the millennium. Shamir absorbed Outkast and Groove Theory while processing music pioneers like Janis Joplin and Nina Simone. His sound is just as transcendent. At the age of 16, Shamir, who identifies as genderqueer and, as such, doesn’t ascribe to gay labels, fronted a punk rock band with friends and began recording tracks for his first EP while still in high school. He was signed to New York City’s Godmode shortly after graduating. Shamir dropped his debut album, Ratchet, in the spring of 2015. It quickly climbed the list of the year’s “Best Of…” music roundups and solidified him as one of the industry’s most promising newcomers. His brand of electrifying disco house makes his music decidedly current and unmistakably retro at the same time. This anachronistic juxtaposition makes his sound undeniably unique (and irresistible.) The first single from Ratchet, "Call It Off," relies on distorted string work and a danceable baseline tethered to a schizophrenic synthesizer to tell the story of a relationship gone wrong. If disco diva Sylvester had a baby with the Scissor Sisters, it may sound like Shamir. Shamir will open a number of 2016 tour dates for rock royalty Duran Duran and recently covered the band’s enduring hit “Hungry Like the Wolf.” With the promise of new music this year, Shamir is set to take over the world—one disco-laden track at a time.

It sounds like a no brainer. If men in their birthday suits isn’t enticing enough then perhaps Floppy Rooster’s giveaways will be exciting enough to get you to stop on in. Starting on Wednesday February 3, Floppy Rooster will kick off its five-night birthday celebration with complimentary Absolut and Jameson cocktails from 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm on each day, except Saturday. LAST CALL

tephen Tendrich has all of the best qualities: He’s handsome, he’s funny and he’s smart. Plus, he’s a go-getter and accomplished to boot. But his best qualities by far are his humility and love for life.

It’s rare that you encounter someone who is a free-spirited goofball that suits up every day to help special needs children on a daily basis. Tendrich rises before the sun peeks its head out from the clouds to educate an autistic, deaf student. He also spends his nights behind the bar making everyone laugh. Tendrich received his teacher’s license from Columbia University in 2013. It was an accomplishment he achieved out of his passion to help others and his love for his mother. Tendrich's mother always wanted to be a teacher, but never had the chance to fulfill her dream. So, like the awesome man he is, Tendrich took to teaching in part to make his mother proud. Immediately, after graduating college when many celebrated with self-indulgence, Tendrich jetted off to Africa in yet another display of humility. Tendrich spent three weeks volunteering in Ghana as a special needs teacher. He helped students who ranged in age from age three to seventeen learn basic educational lessons and how to cope with everyday life. Tendrich is devoted to helping children with special needs, because, although they can take care of themselves, they need a little more help doing so than children that aren’t diagnosed with a learning challenge. Tendrich’s passion for teaching hasn’t taken away from his love for life and his quirky sense of humor. His smile is always on especially when he’s behind the bar. Tendrich has been bartending since the age of 21. He's admired the profession since when he was a server at T.G.I. Friday’s. He was so fascinated with the profession that he would routinely peer over the bar to observe how drinks were made and all that went into being a bartender.

Eventually, he got his opportunity to step behind the bar when a manager at the restaurant decided to replace the existing snotty crew with the capable servers that were on staff. The manager threw them behind the bar and gave them a drink menu to show them the ropes. Luckily for Tendrich, all that bar stocking came in handy and other than a few lessons learned, he excelled quite nicely. That’s only the beginning of Tendrich’s series of adventures. Soon after graduating with his Bachelor’s degree in communications at Flagler College in Saint Augustine, Florida, Tendrich found his way to Canne, France interning for the Kodak Pavilion Company as an aspiring radio jockey. He returned to the States and settled in New York with the hopes of breaking into the radio business as a shock jock, a quick-witted radio host that spews out the unthinkable at every given second. As he pursued his dream of being the next Howard Stern, he practiced his menacing talk on his patrons at the bar. Tendrich eventually tired of his stalled shock jock endeavors, but kept the persona behind the bar, which landed him a bartending gig on Fire Island for multiple summers while he lived in New York. Tendrich recently moved back to Florida, where he was born and raised, due to his father’s battle with prostate cancer. Today, Tendrich is still that fun-loving guy with a big heart. No matter what he does, whether it’s growing his nonprofit, Pink Nail Society, in order to help insured men pay for their prostate cancer bills, teaching children with special needs or tending bar, he feels that they all require the same essential components: patience, attentiveness, innovation and empathy. ON THE GAYDAR On the 13th season of American Idol in 2014, contestant Keith London revealed his sexual identity by refusing to amend the pronouns in Beyoncé’s “If I Was a Boy.” Billed as the first out competitor on the hit reality series, currently in its farewell season, the boy next door was soon eliminated, not making it as far as he hoped. Two years later, London is making his way across the country, developing his social media and stage presence and getting a little bit more intimate with the world around him. Tell me about coming out on American Idol. I came out while I was in Hollywood Week. I sang Beyoncé’s ‘If I Was a Boy’ and ‘Same Love’ by Macklemore. I didn’t know if they would air it. When they did air it, I posted on Twitter: ‘I guess the cat’s out of the bag. I’m gay,’ just to confirm any questioning out there. I made it to the round after that which was the group round. I did a good job at that controversial round. They couldn’t cut me because I sang well. By the next round, they wouldn’t even film me. And then I got cut. What was your experience once you came out during filming? I really am just the boy next door. My gayness is a secondary thing. I’m me. There is nothing really different when it comes to that. There is a history on American Idol of homophobia. It has been alleged that earlier contestants were urged not to share their sexual identity with the world. They didn’t say anything specifically. I did know once I made it through that round. The main executive producer of the show gave me a nod; like a good nod that I did something good. I do feel in my gut that it got me cut. I felt like a favorite before. You know when you are a favorite. The camera crews are always around you and then all of sudden they weren’t. The category I was in was the ‘straight boy next door that all the little girls would vote for.’ Once I came out, it changed me. I have talked to producers and they say that they aren’t homophobic. They are casting something and they are trying to make money off of you. They want to cast people that most of America is going to like. I wanted to show a different side of the gay community which hasn’t really been shown on TV. There is no character like me.

What have you been up to since the show? Since the show, I have been trying to build my social media following. Social media is super important and that is how everyone can connect with you. I have also been writing a bit, and doing shows here and there around the country. I have done some bear events and other gay events kind of low key. This year I am going to be putting out an album of original stuff and really pushing it and giving it my all. Sounds like the bear community has really embraced you? Yeah. Kind of. I need to gain some more weight and grow some more hair. (Laughs) That’s what I am attracted to though. I am very open about that. It’s not stereotypical. I am very open about liking the bears. If they want me to perform, I get to meet some bears and sing my songs as well. Looking back, would you have changed your decision to come out on the show? You never know when you are going to get cut. You don’t want to wait too long because then you may never have had a chance. You are there with the top 200 singers in the country and you have to give it your all. I didn’t want to get up there and sing a song that didn’t mean anything to me or one in which you couldn’t hear the emotion in my voice. I wanted to sing something that meant something to me. I’m glad I did it, but I do wish I would have waited until a little bit later in the competition. There is no real guarantee I would have made it. You are performing at Village Pub on Thursday February 4. Tell us a little bit about that show. I am going to be doing some of my favorite covers and one or two originals. I’ll be doing some Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry, Amy Winehouse and Sam Smith, definitely some of my favorites and some new songs I haven’t done live. My tour is called “Intimate.” I want everyone to come and listen and enjoy my music. I need to be specific on that. This is more of an acoustic thing. It’s just me and my guitar. Hopefully, people who come will want to enjoy some music and then after we can drink and dance and have fun. ost of us can remember those days in high school when we yearned for some guidance from someone who identified with us and could sympathize with our struggles. For most of us, however, it was far from reality and life was a daily battle. Luckily, times have changed and programs are in place to help our youth flourish with a helpful hand to guide them in the right direction. “Growing up, I had no one to talk to about my sexuality that truly understood what I was experiencing because the people who I could speak to were straight,” recalls Sobourney Barnes, Youth Outreach Trainer at Sunserve. “To me, this program is a way to give LGBT youth a confidant who understands what they are going through because they also identify as LGBT. Sunserve’s Mentor It Better program has been in place since March 2014. The program works in conjunction with Broward County High Schools by connecting LGBT adults (mentor) with LGBT high school students (mentees). For an entire school year, the mentor and mentee spend one hour of every week together talking about whatever comes to mind. “For the mentee, it means that they don’t have to be afraid of the future. They have an example of what comes after the constant roller coaster of drama that is high school,” adds Barnes. “For the mentors, I think it’s a chance for them to give back to the youth what they may have been missing in some way when they were younger.” A mentee must be an LGBT high school

student between the ages of 14 and 18 and must attend one of the select Broward County Schools that are part of the program. As for the mentors, they must be 19 years of age or older and out of high school. Once each mentor passes a level 2 background check, they are interviewed and trained by the Sunserve team to guarantee they have the tools needed to be an amazing mentor. “I’ve seen how this program can cause the mentees to be more open," says Barnes. "There is one mentee who was very shy and reserved when I first met them last school year. or years, ﬁtness gurus and health professionals have maintained that strength training is for people who want to gain weight in the form of muscle mass, and that cardiovascular exercise, like running, biking, swimming, etc., is the fastest way to lose weight. Would I rock your world to inform you that this is no longer believed to be the case? Low to moderate intensity aerobic exercise is beneﬁcial for improving the cardio-vascular system. Your time on the treadmill, out hiking in nature, or swimming in the ocean are great for building strong lungs and a healthy heart. The repetitive nature of these activities is also good for relieving stress. Sure, you will burn fat and calories, but if you over-train, you’ll tear down lean muscle causing your metabolism and energy levels to “go down the tubes”. Here’s how it works. While doing cardio (aerobic) exercise you are expending energy and burning calories. As soon as you climb off the Lifecycle or take off your running shoes, your body slows down and the amount of calories you burn slacks off. When you pump iron, your body burns fewer calories during the session, but because of the intensity of the activity (light to heavy sets, multiple movements, etc.) your body continues to burn fat and calories for hours, even days after your workout. Simply stated, when you lift weights, the metabolic and hormonal spikes that occur inside your body can transform you into a fat burning, muscle building animal 24/7! As always, when you embark upon a weight loss program, you have to reduce caloric intake as well as burn more calories. Doing cardio is the best way to burn a lot of extra calories quickly. The advantage of weight training is that while you may not burn as many calories during your session, you’ll continue to burn more

calories and fat long after you rack your last dumbbell. Furthermore, the more lean muscle you build, the more fat and calories you’ll burn all the time even while you’re asleep! Here are some important pointers to consider when you’re pumping iron and on your journey to lose weight:

1. When lifting weights to burn fat, chose manageable weights that allow you to do three to four sets of 15-20 repetitions of each exercise. Make sure to include such multi joint exercises as squats, bench presses, military presses, and pullups. 2. Move rapidly from station to station and cut rest time between sets to under a minute. 3. Train the whole body on nonconsecutive days, 3 to 4 times per week. Alternate sets of lower body and upper body exercises. For example, do four or five sets of biceps curls, then train

glutes with lunges, then onto dumbbell chest presses, etc. 4. Challenge yourself by learning new exercises and new training routines. 5. Don’t be obsessed with the scale. Seek out a trainer who can estimate your body fat % which is a more accurate indicator of how much weight you must lose. How do your clothes fit? How’s your energy level? What does the mirror show you? You are not just aiming at weight loss, you are seeking an overall better level of fitness.

OSCAR-WORTHY? 'TIS THE SEASON TO GO FOR THE GOLD...

ominated for an Academy Award (and favored to win) in the Best Foreign Language Film category and already the winner of a Golden Globe, the brutal and relentlessly bleak Hungarian film Son Of Saul (Samuel Goldwyn Classics), set in Auschwitz in 1944, is definitely not for the faint of heart. Just when you thought you may have heard every possible depressing Holocaust story configuration, along comes this grim story about one man’s mission to give a boy a proper burial. The titular Saul (Géza Röhrig), a Hungarian Jew detached from the horrors of his morbid job as one of the sonderkommandos

(Jewish concentration camp prisoners tasked with disposing of corpses following their demise in the gas chambers), finds a new purpose in life. A boy is discovered barely still breathing among the dead bodies in the “showers.” A Nazi doctor is summoned to the scene and after declaring the event a rarity smothers the boy and orders an autopsy. Saul witnesses everything and takes it upon himself to hide the boy’s body while searching for a rabbi to perform a makeshift funeral. Even though he is childless, Saul calls the dead boy his son as if to give his task a greater purpose. However, the other sonderkommandos have a different plan for Saul. They

need him to assist in what will undoubtedly turn out to be an ill-fated uprising. Saul’s quest is agonizing. Watching him traverse the camp, ominously dragging bodies to the ovens, shoveling ash into a lake, sorting and collecting the belongings of the dead, ushering people to their death, is excruciating. Particularly since his deadened emotions have returned as he attempts to complete this meaningful act. When all is said and done Son of Saul is an impressive feature-length debut by director and co-writer László Nemes. Röhrig’s portrayal of Saul is indelible, the kind that remains with you long after the credits have rolled.

It’s been a while since an R-rated animated film (remember A Scanner Darkly? What about South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut?) has hit the big screen. Leave it to director Charlie Kaufman, the writer behind Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, to take the genre in new and unexpected directions with his striking stop-motion animated film Anomalisa (Paramount). Motivational customer service speaker and author Michael (voiced by David Thewlis) has left L.A. for a speaking engagement at a hotel in Cincinnati. Adored by his legion of followers, Michael’s personal life is in desperate need of motivation. His marriage is on shaky ground and his relationship with his young son could use some work. While in Cincinnati, Michael attempts to reconnect with an ex-girlfriend who he hurt deeply years before. Their reunion is a disaster. However, Michael clicks with a pair of female fans in town for his presentation. One of the women in particular, Lisa (voiced by Jennifer Jason Leigh), piques his interest and they end up having sex. It’s probably best to stop there because, well, a pair of stopmotion-animation characters have sex, including a prolonged cunnilingus segment. Yes, you read that right. That’s not even the strangest part of the movie. For example, with the exception of Michael and Lisa, all the rest of the characters, including Michael’s wife and son, his ex-girlfriend Belle, Lisa’s best friend, the hotel staff, a cab driver and others,

male and female, are all voiced by Tom Noonan. Plus, Michael has this existential crisis that only Kaufman could have come up with. Funny and freaky, and nominated for an Academy Award, Anomalisa is truly an anomaly. “A mostly true story,” The Lady In the Van (BBC Films) once again pairs gay writer Alan Bennett with gay director Nicholas Hytner and effortlessly adds the brilliant Dame Maggie Smith to the formula resulting in a touching and incredibly entertaining experience. In the early 1970s, playwright Bennett (Alex Jennings) lived in a house in Camden Town in London. It was there that he wrote plays, regularly argued with himself, brought home the occasional male trick, and attempted to keep his mother at bay by talking to her on the phone and discouraging visits. His life changed considerably when Miss Shepherd (Smith, overlooked for an Oscar for her performance), a homeless devout Catholic ex-nun and former concert pianist who had been on the lam since a deadly car accident years before, parked her rundown caravan in his driveway. Shepherd, who relied on the kindness of strangers (without ever expressing a word of gratitude), had taken up residency on the street moving her vehicle as necessary. When she pulled in to Bennett’s driveway, neither of them realized she would be there for 15 years. Throughout her extended stay, as Shepherd struggled to maintain a grasp on reality, the duo developed an unlikely camaraderie, which is at the heart of the film.
