10 TOP
of the week
From the hot topics to the hot messes and everything in between, here's what you may have missed last week. BY DIEGO WYATT
10 D.O.A. The hotly-anticipated Ryan Reynolds film Deadpool slaughtered box-office records. It probably didn’t hurt that Reynolds told the world that there was a full frontal fight scene in the film. Reynolds went on to say that he wouldn’t mind the superhero getting a boyfriend in the sequel. Photo: Victoria Will/AP

8 PAPA DON'T PREACH Last week, Pope Francis and Patrirch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church had a meeting of the minds and discussed same-sex marriage. Not-so-surprisingly, the dynamic duo publicly attacked gay marriage. Photo: Gregorio Borgia
7 THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE Drag legend Sherry Vine has released more details about her forthcoming digital gay TV network, gaySVTVworld. The online network will feature a string of original series, including talk shows, a variety 10 show and a docu-series. Photo Courtesy of MGM Resorts

TOM GOES TO HOLLYWOOD A biopic documenting the life of iconic gay erotic artist Tom of Finland is slated to begin filming in the spring. The film, titled Tom of Finland, will be helmed by Finnish director Dome Karukoski, and will follow the artist’s rise to stardom and his cultural significance. Photo Courtesy of Tom of Finland

TOUCH DOWN As a followup to his role in Looking, Russell Tovey is taking on the role of a closeted premier league football player. In The Pass, Tovey’s character explores the challenges of being a public figure with a private life. The film debuts at the BFI Flare Festival in March. Photo: AP
3 REMEMBERING SCALIA Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died and the news was met with mixed emotions, as thousands of opinions were traded via social media. Scalia routinely ruled against gay rights, namely same-sex marriage, and was known for his unflinching conservatism. Photo: Steve Petteway

PORN AGAIN Infamous Big Brother alum Will Wikle is prepping a change in careers, from former reality star, TV host and go-go boy to an adult entertainer. CRY, BABY While appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, President Obama thanked the comedian and reigning queen of daytime talk for all she has done to help advance gay rights. The President’s touching speech moved DeGeneres to tears. Photo: Jay L. Clendenin/Los Angeles Times
SCRUFF BITES BACK The founders of Scruff went on the defensive after the app’s ethnicity filters were called out for being racist. ““Ultimately we wanted to build an app and a service that enables guys to find the kind of guys they’re into,” retorted co-founder Eric Silverbeg. “Sometimes they have ethnic preferences, sometimes they have height/weight preferences, sometimes people have body hair preferences.” 11 Photo Courtesy of GDX Photo

avis Mallory has one of those faces. You know the type. You’re certain you’ve seen him somewhere, but you can’t figure out where. The Georgia-native has emerged as a Renaissance man for the new millennium, parlaying a stint on MTV’s The Real World: Denver into multiple opportunities that have extended his 15 minutes in the spotlight well past their expiration date.
Set your pop culture aim a little higher.
Audiences first saw Mallory as the All American frat boy who just so happened to be gay. Mallory filled the cookie cutter niche on the series well, but his conservative Christian upbringing and a few choice words uttered in a panic made him stand out from the token crowd. Following The Real World, Mallory was cast in spin-off challenges, including: The Inferno 3 and The Duel 2. Mallory went on to be a music correspondent for LOGO’s AfterElton, The Backlot and New Now Next. He later served as the Marketing and A&R Coordinator of Astralwerks Records in New York for two years.
It would appear Gwen Stefani has abandoned her alt-pop angst for crossover appeal, as evidenced by this funky, bass-heavy gem.
By 2013, Mallory wanted to narrow his career scope and he began focusing on songwriting. He moved to Nashville and has written with Parson James, Roger Murrah and Raquel Cole, among others. These days, Mallory DJs, performs, hosts and acts—not necessarily in that order. Mallory’s latest single, the tender, acoustic love song “Anyone Would Know,” was released just in time for Valentine’s Day. The saccharine track is a celebratory and affectionate ode to falling in love, and all of the cloyingly sweet things that come along with it. The video is a love fest as well. “Anyone Would Know” is available for digital download now.

LATRICE ROYALE WORDS BY SILVIO CARVANA . PHOTOS BY DENNIS DEAN

A
t 6’4”, Latrice Royale cuts an intimidating frame. She is even more remarkable clad in a custom-airbrushed floorlength Eddie Couture gown drizzled in crystals and hand-painted animals. If ever there was a queen of the lipstick jungle most know as drag, she’d reign supreme. Her gutteral and contagious laugh reverberates in every direction radiating from her enlarged hourglass figure. She is royalty. The crown is implied. It has been more than four years since Latrice, whose real name is Timothy Wilcots, took the world by storm on RuPaul's Drag Race, making everyone under the sound of his voice eat up his brand of beauty and desire second helpings. This split isn’t entirely schizophrenic. Wilcots and Royale are very similar: energetic, boisterous and boasting larger-than-life personalities. Wilcots showed off his acting potential on the hit LOGO series and has since gone on to land roles in the indie film Cherry Pop, playing the role of Ted. You also may have seen her in the 2014 short Big Hair Bigger Dreams by Dimitry Zhitov. Wilcots has traveled the world, performing in front of enormous crowds that barely speak English but mouth along to every memorable catch phrase and song lyric uttered from his lips. Through Royale, Wilcots has openly told his story of personal tragedy and triumph and notes that Latrice has helped him become a better man.
28
“Connecting with all these fans, all these people that can share and relate to my story and embrace me and love me for the person that I am, has done wonders for me,” admits Wilcots. “It has made my struggle worthwhile. It gave me the answers to why. You know where you’re wondering: Why am I going through this? What have I done to deserve this? Where did this come from? And then you have that epiphany moment: I am going through this because I needed to be sat down for a moment.” Wisdom lives in Wilcots’ eyes. He’s seen the world and lived through mistakes to emerge a victor on the other side. “It made me a better man, because now I don’t take the things that I used to take for granted anymore,” he admits. “I don’t place priority on materialistic things anymore because that can be taken away from you too.” As the sun saunters to the West side of the sky, sweat beads begin to populate WIlcots’ painted forehead. A few feet from him is Chris Hamblin, Wilcots’ partner of three years, manager and musician, who is never far from her. The musical co-conspirators are prepping a host of upcoming projects that will cement WIlcots as one of the savviest business minds is drag entertainment today. His career has many levels, spanning well over 20 years in the game. Happily, he admits to losing weight—not necessarily from dieting, rather more attributable to a physically demanding work schedule and running from venues to the airport each week. It’s a blessed grind she’s been entrusted to entertain the children and spread her love around the globe. When you consider that Wilcots has been on tour since his season of Drag Race stopped taping, rarely slowing down to pause, it’s also not surprising that he’s lauded as a role model for aspiring drag talent and individuals of all walks of life. Wilcots can’t walk down the street without being flagged down. He receives the out pour of love with open arms.
29
“When I first started experiencing all this love and adoration it was very overwhelming,” he remarks. “I would get people’s emails and stories and would literally have to go and take a break. You know, there’s only so much I can do a day.” Wilcots started doing drag following a dare on Halloween. Times were different. There were few drag entertainers pulling top dollar for shows and touring the country. There was mainstream platform to increase booking fees or profiles of local artists. And there was no social media to generate buzz. We fast forward to an era where drag performers have their own merchandise; anything from tee shirts, iTunes singles, wigs and lipstick lines. There is no end to opportunities for branding. Wilcots adapted to the times and is becoming a mogul in his own right, adopting strategies to diversify and expand his brand into various arenas. He established Latrice Royale Inc. owns the Mr & Mrs. Pride South Florida Pageant. “Now that I have been on TV, there became a greater sense of urgency to get my business game in order because there’s no school for this,” he says. “There’s no university or degree that’s going to teach you this. Fail, win, lose, draw; baby, this is how you learn. I come from the school of hard knocks bitch, which is the best school. You can’t buy that kind of common sense. You can’t buy that knowledge.” Wilcots also mentions that RuPaul had a lot do with sharpening his business sense. “The greatest thing that I learned from RuPaul himself was that you’ve got to sell something. This is your brand. You’re going to have a lot of irons in the fire. You’re not going to make a lot of money on any of it. There’s a little bit over here, a little bit over there, a little bit over here. In the end, it adds up. You have to be smart about it.” Along with appearing alongside Willam, Peaches Christ and Kylie Minono in Sister Act, Wilcots is on tour around the country in promotion of his forthcoming album Here’s to Life, based on his one-woman
30
show of the same name, slated to be released March 17. “This is my full story, how I overcame my obstacles, how I found some success and grew into this person I became today,” promises Wilcots. “I am laying it all out on the line. I am out of my comfort zone. I’m singing live and it’s all about new adventures.” Although Wilcots moves at an unrelenting pace, he sees the light at the end of the tunnel and won’t rest until he achieves his goals. “You can either go hard and fast or go slow and steady. Hard and fast, you don’t know when your next gig is coming. Slow and steady means security. Slow and steady wins for me every time.”

Below the Belt BY JAMEER BAPTISTE
34
T
hese days, men are employing any number of cosmetic procedures to look their best and feel their most confident. They're undergoing skin peels, pec implants, hair transplants, teeth bleaching, liposuction, face lifts and more to pull off that picture-perfect image. The next generation of cosmetic enhancements for men is taking things below the belt. Dr. Victor Loria has invented a new penis enlargement procedure that is safe, everlasting and convenient; that’s three benefits to the procedure that is rarely, if ever, associated with any other penis enlargement service available in today’s market. “It’s an FDA-approved, permanent filler that causes the body to make collagen,” explains Dr. Loria about the treatment. “It’s minimally invasive with no cutting or stitches and general anesthesia.” Marlin Smith, a former patient of Dr. Loria, has experienced the procedure three different times in a span of three to four months with his latest procedure being this past July in 2015. Smith liked the results and wanted to go bigger the second time around. “My boyfriend didn’t want me to do it,” Smith reveals. “And it wasn’t like I was pressured by the gay community or felt inadequate. I was in a good place financially and I was intrigued.” Smith was fascinated with the procedure when he first heard about it over a year and half ago. Due to his busy schedule traveling for work and his need to be 100 percent comfortable before agreeing to any cosmetic enhancements, however, he took his time and did the research before he decided to undergo the procedure.
LOCAL BUSINESS messages from the office following surgery to go over his healing process. He even shared daily photos with Dr. Loria who would give him feedback on proper care. “It’s not mainstream yet,” says Dr. Loria. “However, my practice is doubling every year. Since medical complications don’t really play a factor because it’s minimally invasive, individuals of all ages can get the procedure done.” Smith also learned that Dr. Loria is the only physician to perform this type of permanent male enhancement. The innovative procedure is just a simple injection into the penis that doesn’t take any longer than three hours to perform and 21 days of recovery time. The procedure mainly enhances penis girth, which is believed to be the main source of sensation during penetration. For those who want a bulkier bulge, it slightly enhances the length while flaccid. The permanent filler triggers collagen in the penis, which stimulates an expanded package. “My girth increased from five inches to now seven inches and my flaccid length has been extended too,” confirms Smith. Dr. Loria is cautious with every patient, only injecting them with an regulated amount each procedure. Different injections yield different results for each client. It is up to the patient if they want to go bigger and do more than one procedure. Dr. Loria will only perform enough procedures to get a patient to the max eight inches girth, if they desire. “Dr. Loria and his team are really friendly and they make you very comfortable,” assures Smith. “I was awake the whole time. With just the application of some topical cream, I didn’t feel any pain.”
“I was able to do a group phone conference in which Dr. Loria described the procedure in simple terms and answered my questions,” explains Smith. “I was able to speak with him privately and express personal concerns and pose questions of my own.”
For more information about Loria Medical male enhancement services to set up a private consultation, visit www.loriamedical. com or call 1-877-DR-LORIA.
Dr. Loria and his team take the time to consult with each patient throughout all stages of the procedure. Smith received daily text

ROMANCE, ROMANCE THURSDAY 2/18 AT 7:30 PM
Broward Center for the Performing Arts Slow Burn Theatre Company’s newest production reveals how danger and illusion can sow the seeds of romantic lust. Romance, Romance contains two one-act musicals each observing the ironic nature of love. Set in 19th century Vienna, The Little Comedy involves a burgeoning relationship between two people with adopted personas. Josefine tires of her upper class lovers, pretends to be poor, and finds bored playboy Alfred, pretending to be a struggling poet. The second one-act, Summer Share, is set in The Hamptons in the late 1980s and explores the possible illicit affairs stemming from two couples’ season in a rented cottage. 7:30 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.
MO'NIQUE FRIDAY 2/19 AT 7:30 PM Palm Beach Improv
Sassy and blunt comedian Mo’Nique began her career as Nikki Parker on UPN’s long-running early millennial TV show
The Parkers. From there she became a fixture on Showtime at the Apollo and transitioned into films like Phat Girlz and Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins. It was in 2009, though, when she fulfilled her career aspirations by winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the well-received film Precious. Her dark, realistic portrayal of abusive mom Mary solidified her place in film history. 7:30 p.m. Palm Beach Improv. 550 S. Rosemary Ave. West Palm Beach. 33401.
LORD OF THE DANCE: DANGEROUS GAMES FRIDAY 2/19 AT 7 PM BB&T Center

Vermex Van Croix's
Sound Of Music BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

M
iami singer Vermex Van Croix’s love for music hearkens back to when he was just four years of age. His fondest childhood memory is walking in on his dad as he played his guitar while singing in tune. In that very moment, the fledgling Van Croix’s outlook on life was captured by a single musical key. A dilemma, however, kept it locked within him. “The moment was extremely powerful, but I was so shy that I couldn’t tell my father,” recalls the emotional Van Croix. For years, Van Croix kept the passion bottled within only to relinquish his vocal skills in the shower as he dreamed of what could be if only he had the courage to showcase his talents. His vision was so intense that he could foresee his future in the music business, but he was trapped in his own reality. Van Croix held in his desire so long that if he didn’t release his joy at the age of 16, he would have exploded. He realized then that his shyness wasn’t the only reason he was holding his dreams captive. It was his unwillingness to open up to his musician father that also contributed to his suppression. “I couldn’t see myself opening up to him,” remembers Van Croix. “I just really felt I couldn’t be myself in front of him.” The harsh lifestyle that Van Croix’s father led seeped into his thoughts making him feel like he couldn’t be expressive. Things changed when he and his father, by chance, ran into his father’s old voice coach. Grace Teijon knew there was talent coursing through Van Croix's veins and she pulled it out of him. Teijon had Van Croix in the learning chair in no time and by the age of 17, she started his music career in the Latino Cabaret scene. It was a perfect fit for Van Croix. He came from a predominantly Spanish family with a Colombian mother and Puerto
ON THE GAYDAR Rican-Mexican father. Spanish music was a constant in his household growing up, both on the radio and on the lips of his father and grandmother. “My voice comes out with more power when I sing in Spanish,” mentions Van Croix. “However, one of my earliest inspirations as a singer was Donna Summer with her style of slow and upbeat music.” Van Croix didn’t start performing in English until he moved to New York in 2005, where he had the opportunity to sign with Island Records (the former recording label to Mariah Carey). As his mother succumbed to breast cancer, he moved back to his childhood home. Van Croix remained in South Beach until 2007. He then moved back to New York to continue his musical trajectory. There’s no denying Van Croix's love for music. It’s written on his face, as he holds back the tears of joy when he speaks about his accomplishments and the tears of pain when communicates his struggles. Van Croix is consumed by his craft and he felt Florida calling him home. He returned yet again in 2013. Van Croix says he’s just like Jill Scott; he’s his own muse. As his own songwriter since the age of 23, Van Croix draws his inspiration from his personal experiences. His vocal range is dramatic tenor and he loves to sing romantic ballads. Much like all evolving artists, Van Croix is breaking into new genres. Right now, he is excited to announce that he has written a dance music song, "Your Only One," with well-known club DJ and producer Josh Riptide, who has produced and directed the video to the new dance single. The song is ready for radio and the video release is set for March 16, 2016. If you’re dying to hear Van Croix’s sultry Latin voice, you can find his music on Spotify, Amazon and iTunes. Or just walk into Beatnix, (1149 Washington Avenue Miami Beach FL 33139; 305-532-8733) where he works, to catch him singing a tune.

kim the waterways in a exhilarating fashion. At Jetsurf, a regular surfboard just won’t cut it. Feed your need for something bigger, better and more exciting to glide through the water and catch those beach waves. The Jetsurf brand was founded in 2008. Martin Sula desired to take water sports to the next level and used his team’s experience in engineering to create a powerful, motorized surfboard. The motorized surfboard isn’t anything new. In fact, the highpowered water toy has been around since the early '50s, but it hasn’t been perfected until now. Jetsurf has reinvented the tricked-out surfboard with a lighter frame, stronger build and more powerful motor. The improved motorized surfboard is made out of a custom-designed carbon fiber hull that makes it powerful and lightweight. Weighing in at just around 30 pounds, it can be transported easily. Moreover, the thinner frame is equipped to handle some serious beach swells. The device features a propulsion unit developed specifically for the brand. The twostroke engine last about four hours without having to be recharged. Moreover, the Jetsurf is equipped with an automatic start/stop function.
RECREATION surf has three different models to choose from, depending on your intended use and level of expertise. For the advanced rider, there’s the Pro Race Model which is destined for competitive action. The basic and fully equipped models are for the every day, recreational use. The souped-up surfboards were front and center at the Miami International Boat Show last weekend. Jetsurf showed off their boards with live demos on the hour, all weekend long. Their experienced riders didn’t disappoint. The seasoned sportsmen ripped through the water in their fitted Jetsurf gear. They were drenched from head to toe, performing aerial tricks that catapulted them from the water into the air with body-morphing turns and maneuvers. Watching them was invigorating and made onlookers want to jump on the board their own go at a hair-raising spin or two.
It handles like a true surfboard. So, if you already know how to hang ten, there’s no extra learning necessary. Jet-

THE 7 WORST PEOPLE AT YOUR GYM BY TOM BONANTI
A
lthough I enjoy my private training studio, I am also a veteran of many years training in commercial health clubs. Most of these establishments have fantastic energy, provide excellent inspiration, opportunities for socializing and, oh yeah, they’re great for working out. Despite their attraction, these gyms have certain liabilities in the form of specific characters who often arrive on the scene, sometimes alone, frequently in packs. You’ve met them. Boisterous, usually messy, unabashedly selfish and obnoxious to others, they can spoil it for you and even result in giving the gym a bad reputation. So here it is, my list of the seven most terrible people at your gym.

FITNESS
1. Greedy Gus: This dude hoards dumbbells, machines, cables, everything in sight and claims he’s using them all! If you’re like “Gus” and want to circuit train or do super sets, try to stockpile as little equipment as possible. Do your sets rapidly and move it! 2. The Brat: Spoiled, selfabsorbed and entitled, the brat refuses to clean up after himself. The rest of us end up having to search for plates, barbells and other essential gym equipment he’s tossed about willy-nilly. So, brat, next workout, bring your maid to rack your weights. Or, grow up and learn some basic consideration and courtesy. 3. The Sweaty Stud: Sweat is a sign of hard work. Hell, who doesn’t enjoy watching a sweaty, “built” stud giving it his all in the gym? Just have consideration for others. Wear clean gym clothes. Bring a fresh towel to wipe down the equipment after using it. Your sweaty puddles can transmit infections like ringworm, jock itch, even MRSA. So, NOT hot! 4. Timmy Texter: Because
“Tim” is so important, clueless, or both, he has to stop midset of every exercise to scan his smart-phone, text his buddies, or scroll through apps. Besides short changing his own workout, everyone else has to wait for him to move his butt off much needed equipment. For best results in the gym, leave cell phones in the car during workouts. 5. Hey Bro, Gimme a Spot? Safety is admirable in the gym. If you’re lifting so heavy ( squats and barbell chest presses) that you need a spotter to help you force more reps, or change weights during drop sets, then bring your own man. Others are busy with their own workouts. Many others are intimidated, or simply not strong enough to provide for your “he-man” needs! 6. Ned Know-it-All: “Ned” craves dishing out unsolicited advice and usually has no clue that he’s pushing buttons. He may not even know what he's talking about. It’s all about “Ned,” what he knows (or thinks he knows) and how he has a superior way of doing everything. As
a rule, do not get involved in other folks’ workouts. 7. Lyle the Liability: This dude distracts others by grunting loudly, singing terribly along with HIS music, and throwing equipment around carelessly. Noisy, over-bearing and careless, “Lyle” is a drama-queen at heart. Avoid him and report his disruptive conduct to the front desk. Of course my list could go on and on, ad nauseum. Most of these characters are lifetime gym members who actually reinvent themselves in spectacularly annoying ways. I’d be interested in hearing from readers if you have any unique, distinct cases of gym pathology to add to this collection. HOW TO BE TOUCHED
BY GREGG SHAPIRO
I
f the thought of sitting through another so-called “chick flick” romcom, as raunchy as Sisters or starring Rebel Wilson doing her Rebel Wilson routine, sounds about as appealing as a colonoscopy, there are some things you should know about How To Be Single (WB). First of all, the men in the movie make it more than worthwhile.
Robin works with paralegal Alice (Dakota Johnson on the post-Fifty Shades of Grey road to redemption). Alice foolishly decided to take a break from longtime (read: since college) boyfriend Josh (Nicholas Braun), so that she could finally experience what it’s like to live alone. Initially, she rooms with older sister Meg (Leslie Mann), an obstetrician who – wait for it – doesn’t like babies!
Sure, Rebel Wilson is still jiggling her plussized self through a series of pratfalls in which she ends up the butt of most of the jokes. But, as legal-secretary-with-a-secret Robin she’s getting better at delivering her sassy and saucy lines. Plus, if it hasn’t been made clear, the men in the movie are hot.
Meanwhile, Lucy (Alison Brie) hangs out in Tom’s Bar for the free Wi-Fi so that she can find her ideal love match online. Bar proprietor Tom (Anders Holm) is a love ‘em and leave ‘em guy whose morning wood is a sight to behold and opens the door for punchlines galore.
74
Before you can say, “nothing ever goes as planned,” Josh, who was not in favor of the time-out, has found himself a new girlfriend (but he’s still in love with Alice). Alice gives the single (read: slutty) life a go, but isn’t digging it. Luckily she meets hot widower/single dad David (Damon Wayans, Jr.) at an alumni event. Meg, who decides to go the alternative insemination route after being charmed by an infant, tries and fails to resist the charms of law firm receptionist Ken (the stunning Jake Lacy). Poor Lucy survives a minor breakdown in a bookstore and gets swept away by George (Jason Mantzoukas), just as Tom realizes he may have fallen in love with her. Got it? Interwoven in all of these plot twists are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. The comedic gifts of the lead actresses, especially Wilson and Mann, are welldisplayed. However, Wilson might want to consider something different in the future as her shtick is wearing thin. Destined to insult the poetry and bipolar communities alike, Touched With Fire (Roadside Attractions), has something to offend almost everyone. Marketed as a tragic love story about people coping with and affected by mental illness, Touched With Fire is really just an interminable advertisement for the titular book by Kay Jamison (who actually appears as herself on-screen) dressed up as a feature-length film. If this is
Katie Holmes’ attempt to be taken as seriously as fellow actress Michelle Williams, she has failed miserably. Taking us through five ceaseless seasons, from fall through fall, Touched With Fire opens at a poetry reading given by Carla (Holmes) from her book Faded. It’s hard to imagine she sold many copies at the event. Not too far away, manic Marco (Luke Kirby) has quit his job, has had his power shut off, is “living off the map” (his words), writing poetry, and has stopped taking his meds. When Marco and Carla end up in the same ward at a psychiatric hospital, they gravitate towards the other’s poetic sphere. After getting off to a bad start, they discover that they have more in common than they thought. But Dr. Strinsky (Maryann Urbano) doesn’t think it’s a good idea for them to be spending so much time together and eventually separates them. Following their release from the hospital, Marco and Carla are determined to find each other and have to resort to alternative means to do so. Once they begin living together as a couple, to the chagrin of Carla’s parents (played by Christine Lahti and Bruce Altman) and Marco’s father (Griffin Dunne), the downward spiral is rapid, resulting in pregnancy, an assault and the inevitable unfortunate turn of events. If you’re looking to burn almost two hours of your time, there are more productive ways go about it.
