Etz Chaim Synagogue A Safe Haven for Jewish Gays, Lesbians

o Have you heard the good news? Etz Chaim has come home. Just last year in July, Fort Lauderdale’s only gay and lesbian synagogue staged a comeback in Wilton Manors. Since its inception in 1974, the synagogue has moved from location to location in South Florida. But after a brief stint in Tamarac, Rabbi Noah Kitty decided to return to Wilton Manors because that is where most of the synagogue’s members live . Rabbi Kitty has been with the synagogue since 1994 and currently serves as its executive director. She is passionate about her role

and strives to grow the membership of the synagogue by focusing attention and resources on marketing. She reaches out to prospects personally and works one-on-one with individuals who are interested in converting to Judaism. Etz Chaim provides a safe haven for gay and lesbian non-orthodox Jews to worship and feel accepted. The synagogue follows the Jewish calendar and all the important religious holidays. Anybody is welcome to attend Shabbat on Fridays at 8:00 p.m. “We are very appreciative of the warm welcome by everyone in Wilton Manors,” Rabbi Noah Kitty. The synagogue offers annual memberships. For Chris Dunham, “Thirteen.Three” Is a Very Personal Journey into Suicide

Every thirteen minutes and three seconds, someone in America commits suicide. For South Floridian Christopher Dunham, that statistic was made devastatingly personal on January 10, 1998, when his father, Roger, a successful business person and family man, killed himself. “My father’s suicide blew a hole right open in the center of my life, my mom’s, our entire family,” Dunham says. “I was trying to build a business, and struggling to keep a relationship together. His death threw those into turmoil.” For most of the people who know Chris Dunham, he is a longtime South Florida resident, former Major League Baseball player with the Cleveland Indians organization, successful business person (Dunham Insurance Services), philanthropist, and contributor to progressive political causes and candidates. But there is another side that many who know him well have not had an opportunity to see, a side that has battled addiction, selfdestruction, loneliness, and what he characterizes as his “demons.” “I learned the hard way that suicide doesn’t end a single life. What followed for me was a living hell. Dad’s death impacted everything: The image I had of myself. My relationships with my family and my co-workers. My first long-term relationship hit the rocks and never recovered. I drowned myself in a sea of misery, and I chased it down with alcohol, meaningless sex, and drugs with every letter of the alphabet—from ‘K’ through ‘X’.” His journey to come to terms with his father’s suicide, the impact it has had on every part of his life, and what he decided to do about the conflicting emotions and personal turmoil are the inspiration and foundation for

“Thirteen.Three,” an installation art exhibit designed and produced by Dunham, and presented at the House of Art gallery (415B NW 26th Street, Miami) for three weeks, beginning March 13, 2015. “People who choose suicide are seeking something, but what are they looking for?” Dunham asks. “Peace? Enlightenment? Heaven? “Most of the conversation about suicide theguymag

concerns what can be done to prevent it, to save those who choose to end their lives. This exhibit is about those who survive. Who tries to save them?” Dunham says that the path followed by the survivors of someone who takes his or her own life is a personal journey, one that is dark and fraught with emotion: Guilt at not having done enough for the dead loved one. Feelings of ambivalence (anger, sadness, despair, frustration, loneliness, hatred, disappointment) towards the departed for what he or she has done. The list and kinds of collateral damage abounds: Broken families. Substance and alcohol abuse. Recurring nightmares. According to Dunham’s vision, “Thirteen. Three” transports the participant to a journey into the last minutes of a chaotic mind, one “that chooses to end the living hell in which it finds itself.” The residual effects are felt most powerfully by the survivors, who—in the wake of the suicide—must contend with their own hell: Their journey to finding enlightenment is only just beginning. As Dunham explains, there are two journeys being undertaken when a suicide occurs: There is the journey of the tortured soul who is seeking a release from pain. And there is the unplanned journey of the survivors. It, too, is a journey of enlightenment—no matter that it is unexpectedly taken, and even unwanted. “He thought he was doing us a favor, but he wasn’t,” Dunham acknowledges about his father’s death. “When Dad killed himself, I didn’t have the tools to deal with the overflow of feelings and emotions,” he adds. “When they came, they came on like a Category 5 hurricane. The anger, the resentment, the confusion, the loneliness, the loss. But especially the anger. And who did I direct it at? Me, of course.” For the exhibit, Dunham is utilizing art installations, an artistic genre of three-dimensional work that is designed to transform the viewer’s perception of the exhibition space. “Thirteen. Three” is comprised of seven interactive installations that were designed by Dunham to capture the disturbing and somber mood of the environs utilized by those who commit suicide, something that enables audiences to experience the meaning of the installation. share with us on guymag.net

‘…WHAT I AM STILL LEARNING AND RE-LEARNING EVERYDAY—IS THAT I CAN FINALLY LET GO OF THE PAIN, THE ANGER.’ The seven art installations of “Thirteen. Three,” and what each represents, include: • “COLLATERAL DAMAGE”—depicting the roughly 22 veterans who commit suicide per day, or one every 65 minutes. • “CONTEMPLATION”—the huge impact of suicide rates in Asia and the Far East. • “SHOOTER DOWN”—depicting those who, like Dunham’s father, use a gun range to commit the act. • “REPERCUSSIONS”—concerning the tragic impact that bullying contributes to suicide rates. • “THE JUMPER”—depicting suicide by bridge, which is more likely to be impulsive than other means. • “THE CUTTER”—representing the toll of self-harm, even in high-functioning individuals. • “ISOLATION”—depicting hotel room suicides. “I want to know, to understand, what my dad went through. Ironically, I got to experience a taste of it firsthand as a result of what he did. I didn’t bring this on myself, but I definitely got to feel the full measure of anxiety and panic attacks, recurring bouts of depression—which wasn’t helped by the substance abuse, which I fully embraced. And of course there was an uncontrollable stream of explosive anger, mostly directed at my mom and my romantic partners, and friends who were only trying to be there to support me. “What I learned in the intervening 17 years—what I am still learning and re-learning everyday—is that I can finally let go of the pain, the anger. There is life after a loved one commits suicide. theguymag

o It’s amazing what you can do when you work hard and remain determined. Albert Pierantoni moved to South Florida from Tampa roughly six years ago. Since then, he has been planting seeds in the community that have opened one door after another for him. He first settled in South Beach only to get leery of it quite quickly. Within a brief six months, he decided to relocate to Wilton Manors where he would be closer to his job at Hotspots Magazine. But always pushing himself to try new things and realizing that he wanted a change, Pierantoni left his sales manager position at the magazine and started working at Georgie’s Alibi as a server. While there, an intriguing opportunity presented itself in the form of the Stoli Cocktail Challenge at B. Bar and Grill (formerly known as Bills Filling Station). Not knowing much about mixing drinks, Pierantoni still entered and took second place in the competition. But what he gained from it was so much more than just runnerup; it sparked an interest in him. And yet again Pierantoni was on the move to conquer a newfound passion for bartending. With no experience, however, he realized he would have to start from the bottom, so Pierantoni pursued a job at the one place in town where he knew its owner had begun his career the same way. Pierantoni has known the owner of Rumors for sometime and knows the story of how he started out as a bar-back only to become a successful bar-owner today. So Pierantoni went to work at Rumor’s and absorbed everything he could about mixology. He learned the basics quickly and was eventually rewarded with bartending shifts at the club. At the same time, Albert also turned 30 years old — a pivotal age to work hard and achieve

more based on an early tragedy that happened to him growing up in Tampa. Pierantoni grew up as the youngest of five brothers, and throughout his adolescent years, he lived comfortably. But all that changed when he decided to come out shortly before his senior year of high school. The only love he received from his family thereafter was from his mother. His father and brothers became distant. Tragedy struck when his mother passed away as Pierantoni was discovering the world in his mid-20’s. Alone and heartbroken, Pierantoni fled Tampa to pursue his mother’s advice: “You can only gain success by driving yourself to be better.” The pain of losing his mother left him reckless in life, but Pierantoni’s 30th birthday was precisely when his mother’s encouraging words resurfaced. While bartending at Rumors, Pierantoni picked up a second job as an administrative assistant at

Leatherwerks. He worked both jobs or roughly 80 hours a week, yet still found time to enter the Mr. VP competition at Village Pub. Becoming Mr. Village Pub in 2014 meant he was now that bar’s public face. All of sudden, he became a celebrity on Wilton Drive. It’s been a little over a year since Pierantoni turned 30, enjoying the title of Mr. Village Pub 2014 and will crown his successor later this year. He’s taken bar-hopping to a new level by landing a new job at Progress Bar in Wilton Manors. As logistics manager and event coordinator, Pierantoni not only gets to control the daily operations of the bar, he also gets to handle all the different events at the bar. Now the question is: Where in town hasn’t Pierantoni worked?

Thomas Roberts, the gay anchor of MSNBC’s Way Too Early (its 5:30 a.m. show), has a shot at being their afternoon news star. Starting March 2, the network replaced Ronan Farrow Daily and The Reid Report with a daily two-hour block of news programming, from 1 to 3 p.m. Eastern, featuring Roberts. The move comes as a response to flagging daytime ratings and a desire for that slot’s programming to feature more breaking news. Roberts has already worked as a correspondent for CBS News and contributed to Entertainment Tonight, before landing at MSNBC in 2010. For the sake of LGBT TV personalities in need of jobs, we’re happy about this and hoping for robust ratings. But really, we’re just happy that theguymag

His stardom peak was 30 years ago, after all, which means that a theatrical release could be marketed incorrectly and misfire. This way, streaming via Netflix becomes a way to get the movie to the right cool-audience eyes without too much budget spent on promotion and fear of butts in seats on opening weekend. The Garlic Knot New York Pizza and More

o It’s the place your friends are talking about—“that great pizza place” in Oakland Park!!! That is how I found this place. It took me a while to get there my first time, but the one visit was all it took. I was hooked. This is a great place for lunch or dinner. The atmosphere is very casual. They boast “the best food around and an atmosphere to match.” You do not need to dress up at all. There is plenty of seating (indoor and out) and ample parking in the Publix shopping plaza at the corner of Commercial and Dixie. The menu is a traditional Italian. There are the standard starters—Garlic Bread ($4,50), Mozzarella Sticks (10 for $7.25) and Chicken Wings (10 fo $7.75) in a number of flavors: Hot, Medium, Mild, BBQ, Teriyaki, and Tangy Cajun. Dipping Sauces include Blue Cheese and Ranch. But the MUST HAVE are the Garlic Knots (5 for $2.75; 10 for $4.25). I get mine with melted mozzarella cheese and some marinara dipping sauce ($4.50). It is almost a meal in itself. Every time I have gone there—bar none—I have been treated like a customer that they want to see again! My server makes sure that my order is prepared in such a way

that it minimizes the price and maximizes the amount of food I get— WHAT COULD BE BETTER!!! The effect is to maximize my enjoyment. For lunch. they have a number of moderately priced specials ($6 - $7) that include a soda. The specials include a slice of Pizza and some Knots, a Stromboli, Breaded Chicken or my favorite, the Sausage Roll. The portions are more than enough to fill you up. Their regular menu has no fewer than 30 specialty pizzas in varying sizes—Personal (9 inches), Medium (12 inches), Large (16 inches) and XL (18 inches) in price ranging from $8.25 to $25.99 (depending on the toppings). The names are as colorful as the pizzas themselves. There’s Mott Street ($15.75 to $22.50) with Chicken, Mushrooms, Onions, Spinach and Garlic; Ebbet’s Field ($14.25 to $20.50), a White Pizza with Spinach, Tomato and Garlic; the Brooklyn Bridge ($14.75 to $21.25) with Spinach, Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Black Olives and Red Onions; and my own favorite, the Wall Street ($13.75-$20), a meat lovers feast with Pepperoni, Sausage, and Extra Cheese. The Calzones are large and stomach stuffers. You can’t go wrong trying the Combo Zone ($9.25), with Sausage, Pepperoni, Mushroom, Red Onion, Green Pepper, Black Olive, and three Cheeses. Or for the really indulgent, sty a Stuffed Slice ($4.45), with Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon, Sausage, Meatball and Mozzarella. Try them and I think you’ll be convinced! Their generations-old recipes, made-from-scratch dough, authentic old-world sauces and cult-following garlic knots were created in New York and perfected in Colorado over a decade ago by native New Yorkers now serving great pizza and Italian food in a relaxed, family friendly atmosphere. There was much to love and admire about the 2011 film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Although it was a familiar formula – a group of people who might not otherwise become friends do so with wonderful results -- the film struck the right chord with audiences of all ages and became an unlikely box office hit. You know what that means, don’t you? The inevitable sequel. Director John Madden returns to helm

the sequel. As in the previous version, Maggie Smith steals every scene in which she appears. From the first, where her character Muriel joins entrepreneur Sonny (the increasingly hot Dev Patel) at a meeting with a New York hotel franchise headed by Ty (David Strathairn) to discuss a potential business partnership, to the last, where she may be saying farewell in her own way. In between, there’s the wedding of Sonny and Sunaina (Tina Desai) to plan, the arrival of new hotel guests Guy (Richard Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig) – one of whom might be employed by the New York hotel company, a business proposition for Evelyn (Judi Dench), a decision about suitors for Madge (Celia Imrie) and a divorce to finalize for Douglas (Bill Nighy).

There’s also plenty of tomfoolery involving mistaken identities, miscommunications, jealousy and other intrigues. Being a sequel, without having the novel by Deborah Moggach for its basis, Ol Parker’s screenplay relies more heavily on humor than heart. The jokes, mostly coming from Sonny, are shticky, as if the hotel was in the Catskills instead of Jaipur. It’s not all schlock – Sonny’s line about questioning his own sexuality after meeting Guy is handled well. But, unlike with the first film, watching TSBEMH, felt like setup for yet another sequel on the docket. Even worse, the film lagged on more than one occasion, becoming, dare it be said, boring. For these reasons, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel will always be second best.

So far, one Disney cartoon character has survived the transition from animation to liveaction and that’s Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmations. Of course, that probably has more to do with the actress portraying the character, in this case the very versatile Glenn Close.

After the dismal live-action Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie in the only role she was truly born to play, it was probably inevitable that Disney would continue to crank out these kinds of movies. The proof is here in Cinderella (Disney), opening in theaters in March. As with Maleficent, the (future) princess is far less interesting than the evil villainess. In the case of Cinderella, Cate Blanchett fully embodies the despicable Lady Tremaine, the widowed mother of two who marries the widowed father (Ben Chaplin) of Ella (Lily James). Following the death of Ella’s father, Tremaine’s abuse of Ella begins. She and her dreadful daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drizella (Sophie McShera) treat Ella less like family and more like an indentured servant. The one high point in Ella’s life is forest encounter with hot Kit, aka Prince Charming (Richard Madden), although she is unaware of his identity and status. What follows is the announcement of a ball to find the Prince a suitable bride, Cinderella’s transformation at the hands (or should that be wand?) of her Fairy Godmother (Helena Bonham Carter, providing comic relief while wearing Meryl Streep’s Hollywood teeth from Into The Woods), the lengthy dance sequence, the stroke of midnight and so on. Everyone already knows the story, a tale as old as time. Sadly, neither Chris Weitz’s screenplay, Kenneth Branagh’s lackluster direction, the unimaginative special effects, or the questionable costuming and hair situations (gay men would be wise to pay attention to Tremaine’s styling) does anything to make it better than the original 1950 Disney cartoon version or the 1965 TV musical version, for that matter. Even the Frozen Fever short, featuring the voices of Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell, in which a head cold results in snotty snowmen (no kidding), which precedes the movie, isn’t up to par.

Sleep is important to your well being. However, according to the National Sleep Foundation, at least 40 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder. How much sleep one needs depends upon the individual. Most people who say, “I can do with five or six hours a night,” are just plain fooling themselves. Evidence points to a need for at least eight hours of sleep per night and often as much as nine or more hours. We can get by on less, but eventually this “sleep debt” can be hard to overcome. Lack of proper “beauty sleep” can get ugly on many levels. Besides bags and circles, sleep deprivation has been linked to such serious conditions as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression and even obesity. Fortunately, there is a lot you can do to get a good night’s sleep. First of all, you need to figure out what is keeping you awake. What’s really bugging you? Stress is the number one cause of shortterm sleeping difficulties. Financial or relationship concerns or pressures at work can trigger long hours of sleeplessness. Often just venting your anxieties to a friend or a professional counselor can relieve inner turmoil. Environmental factors – room temperature, noise, bright lights and an uncomfortable mattress – can cause sleeplessness. A busy lifestyle is another factor in poor sleep. Computers, cell phones (turn it off at night, you’re not that popular!) and television can make it difficult for you to “unplug” and allow your body and mind to slow down enough to sleep. If you are on medications or have specific health problems, check with your doctor, because these can all interfere with your sleep. If you sleep soundly for at least eight hours a night, you will be more wide-awake and alert during the day. If you are tired much of the time and feel like dozing off during the day, then you are not getting the quality sleep you need. Depression and high blood

pressure are only a few indications of prolonged sleep deprivation. This is serious and you need to take action. Here are some tips to help you fix your problem. Regular exercise consisting of light aerobic activity (power walking or cycling) two to three times a week for 30 or 40 minutes is a great start. Combine this with weight training twice a week for 30 minutes to an hour and you have a sure formula for better sleep at night. Most trained athletes sleep soundly, and those just getting introduced to a regular exercise program say that sounder sleep is the first physical reaction they experience from their conditioning regime. Go to bed and get up on a regular schedule, even on weekends. Keep to your schedule and try not to nap during the day. Taking a brief 20 minute cat-nap in the afternoon can make some people sharper, more alert, and promote faster recuperation from exercise. Avoid the deep sleep that comes from longer naps. Pay attention to your surroundings. Minimize noise, light, and extreme temperatures in the bedroom. Cut out TV before bed in favor of reading, quiet music, or a warm bath. Pay attention to what you put into your body. Avoid caffeinated drinks four to six hours before bed. No large meals, alcohol, or smoking before you hit the sack.
