How Tuesday’s Angels Touch Lives in Broward County BY JAMEER

o It all started in 1988 with a group of retired professionals who wanted to make an impact on their community. They would meet for dinner once a month on Tuesday night to raise funds in support of Poverello, a Wilton Manors food bank for low income and HIV/AIDS individuals in Broward County. But they were determined to do more, so they sought out their own non-profit status and stamped themselves as Tuesday’s Angels. Since 1993, Tuesday’s Angels has provided emergency financial aid to HIV/AIDS individuals in Broward County. (Aid applicants must go through a case manager.) The application is then screened by a team of volunteers and placed on the desk of the organization’s case management director, Bruce Borger, who approves the funds. In 20 years, the organization has distributed more than $2.2 million. Most of the money distributed comes from donations and fundraisers, such as a monthly dinner for members that is still held the first Tuesday of every month between October and April at Mojo restaurant. The dinner is open to anyone who would like to attend, which provides an opportunity for members to bring their friends. Dinner costs $28, with a minimum donation of $25. Fifty to 70 members attend the dinner each month and generally hear a keynote speaker. Dr. Stephen Fallon, executive director of Latinos Salud, will deliver the keynote next month (April). To become a member, just attend a dinner and register your email. Members receive an invitation to RSVP two weeks before each dinner. Tuesday’s Angels maintains a close relationship with businesses in the community who support the organization by hosting events. One of two events that has helped

to raise more than $100,000 is “Bartenders, Boxers and Briefs” (BBB) hosted by B. bar & Grille of Wilton Manors. “I don’t think anything like it exists in Fort Lauderdale,” said Chuck Nicholls, vice president of Tuesday’s Angels. “We are very fortunate to be the benefactors of the event.” BBB brings together most of the gay bars in the area to auction off the underwear of participating bartenders. The other event was hosted by the now Orlando-based A Celebration of Friends, which moved from Fort Lauderdale two years ago but continues to be a huge source of non-financial support, said Nicholls,

highlighting the contribution of Tom Spence, president of A Celebration of Friends. Events this year include a “Bingo Night” at Tropics restaurant in April, a special fundraising dinner in May, and of course the aforementioned BBB fundraiser in July. The main aspect that distinguishes Tuesday’s Angels from other nonprofits is that 100 percent of the donations go to directly to helping individuals in the community. “All overhead expenses are paid by the board members,” said Nicholls. “They are the finest group of individuals I’ve every met with a special thank you to Dr. Michael Ross, the current president.” guymagtube

ELAINE LANCASTER MMP’S GLOBAL ENTERTAINMENT SPOKESPERSON

On July 15, 1997, two events occurred in South Beach, Florida, that would forever change the face of the vacation resort. Fashion legend Gianni Versace was murdered outside his home Casa Casuarina on Ocean Drive. And drag entertainer Elaine Lancaster moved into town. In the eighteen years that followed, much about the Versace massacre has been forgotten even as his fashion empire has grown to new heights, while Elaine has raised the bar for all female impersonators. She’s that talented, that beautiful, and that kind.

week, Elaine Lancaster was appointed o This as Multimedia Platform’s Global Entertainment Spokesperson, assuming the newest seat on its Media Advisory Board, and adding the latest achievement in a career that has included performances around the world, and a regular spot on Bravo’s Housewives of Miami. At six foot, two inches tall, Elaine Lancaster is hard to miss. So is her handsome alter ego, James Davis. These days you’re less likely to see James around town, so crammed is the Lancaster calendar with public appearances and fundraising events, her preferred way to give back to the community. But back in 1997, things were considerably different. From a studio apartment on 9th and Collins, Elaine cautiously made her way into the spotlight at the Warsaw Ballroom where Versace once hungout as a regular late into the evening. And it was at the Warsaw that his friends decided to hold a memorial service in honor of the slain fashion designer. Attending the service in full drag, Elaine made quite the entrance, as the story goes. Grand enough at least to draw the attention of Maxwell Blandford who ran the show at Warsaw (right up until it closed in 2012). “The first thing Maxwell said to me,” Elaine recalls, “was ‘My God you’re gorgeous.’” Batting fake eyelashes like whisk brooms, the Dallas-born blonde linked arms and said, “Why thank you. My name is Elaine Lancaster and I’m new in town.” The upshot of the introduction found Elaine hosting center stage on Warsaw’s amateur strip contest every Wednesday night, and she hasn’t stopped working since. Of course there is work, and then there is work—the kind for which you’re not paid, as in charity fundraisers for which the Lancaster name has become synonymous. “Back in Dallas, wa-ay before I hit Miami, I had co-created an event called ‘An Evening with the Stars,’” Elaine says. “Now, back then in the mid-90s, drag queens were stars. They were revered and they were idolized and they were genuinely local celebrities.” As it happened, this one event raised more money in a single night that another other of its kind, with Elaine’s contribution being singled out with an award given by the mayor of the city. “I was a one-man operation from ticket sales to marketing. I called, I begged, I pleaded share with us on guymag.net

to do everything possible to get everyone to donate to this cause. It was a great learning experience about what can get done when you just don’t take no for an answer.” Case in point was a sponsorship from American Airlines who came on board with the caveat that there could be no other airline sponsors. By event day, Elaine had convinced not only American to write a giant check, but United and Southwest as well. “Everyone was just falling all over themselves to help.” From that first success, Elaine found that giving back to the community came with its own positive karma. “I sort of found my calling,” she remembers. “I’ve been prostituting myself to get people to give money to charities ever since.” Clever Elaine. “I’ve been involved with all kinds of charities, not just HIV and AIDS, “ Elaine says, “but in all the years that I’ve been involved in these fundraisers, I’ve never once made a penny.” Reread that sentence again. It’s hard to imagine, but actually true. Keep in mind that Elaine Lancaster has been the host of the world-famous White Party in Miami for the past 16 years, raising millions for the needy. “I feel so blessed to do what I do, and, yes, it’s a lot of hard work, it’s not a hobby. But I equate it with the ocean. If you stand on the edge and watch it go out—let’s say 10 percent, then 90 percent comes crashing back to you. And that’s the nature of fundraising. You give a little, you get a lot back.” As MMP’s Global Entertainment Spokesperson, Elaine will attend outreach events representing Guy magazine, Agenda newspaper, and the corporation’s various Internet platforms and websites. It’s a national presence that requires a larger than life persona–in short the perfect fit for the uber-glamourous Lancaster who has been racking up her own legends of fans outside of the gay clubs these days. As a friend on Bravo’s Housewives of Miami, who is constantly at war with housewife PR agent Marysol Patton, Elaine has no trouble holding her own in verbal slugfests—the kind that make the gossip rags while keeping us all in stitches for the absurdity of it all. But what keeps Elaine’s head above the fray is that determination to give from the heart, and listen from the soul. Across the country, or in our own backyard, an especially rare quality indeed. theguymag

Ciro Ciroc A Squeeze of “Lima” for Your Cocktail by

o One of the many nice things about getting to know Ciro Ciroc is that he isn’t selfish about sharing the things that make him happy. The Peruvian-born bartender at Progress Bar South Florida in Wilton Manors is as cheerful and full of energy talking about his job and co-workers as he is about exploring the Everglades, enjoying Greater Fort Lauderdale’s beaches, or accompanying a friend to his first facial threading experience. “You have to love what you do, whatever you’re doing at the time,” offers the ebullient 23-year-old. “There’s no other way to experience life.” The 20th Century writer F. Scott Fitzgerald suggested that there are no second acts in American lives—that everything that came before helps to provide context and meaning for what follows. The author of “The Great Gatsby” might easily have had in mind Ciroc, who was born in the Miraflores (Spanish for “look at the flowers”) district of Lima, Peru, a place known for its upscale living, shopping areas, gardens, flower-filled parks and beaches. (Well, except for the shopping; more on that later.) Moving with his family to South Florida when he was just seven months old, Ciroc grew up in Hollywood, which further helped inform his love for nature and all its beauty (including the two-legged variety). “I love being outside,” Ciroc says. “In high school I played tennis and was a swimmer. South Florida

He started bartending at Progress Bar South Florida shortly after it opened last September. “I really love working at Progress,” Ciroc enthuses. “The environment is so positive, so fun, and the chemistry between everyone who works there is great.” Still, he’s never far from his love of nature and the outdoors. If he wasn’t bartending, Ciroc admits that he would want to pursue professional photography. “I love photographing nature, wildlife—that’s why I have been spending so much time in the Everglades lately,” he says with a laugh. Just don’t try and take him shopping. The tanned, toned, trendy twenty-something has no patience for it. “Ugh!” he moans. “I hate shopping. Hate it. People love going shopping, but they hate most of what’s in their closets. I am not the person you want to take with you on an all-day excursion to the [Photo by Big Dewitte] mall. o Theater and film legend Charles Busch has created some of the most memorable characters on stage and screen. His plays, including Vampire Lesbians of Sodom and

the Tony nominated The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, are as varied as one playwright’s work could possibly be. The film adaptations of his plays Psycho Beach Party and Die, Mommie, Die! are comedy classics with campy queer twists. Busch, who can be seen in both aforementioned films, has made his name as both a playwright and an actor. A born performer, Charles Busch brings his new solo show to the Rrazz Room in Coral Springs on March 28. 28 I spoke with Busch about his work in March 2015.

Gregg Shapiro: Charles, when we spoke in 2013, we talked about your play The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife and the possibility of a film version. At the time you said there was what you described as “a flurry of interest.” Do you have an update on the status? CB: Movies seem to have a way of being alive, then dead, then alive, then barely alive and then resuscitated. The Allergist’s Wife movie is sort of alive right now. I was commissioned to write another screenplay of it which everyone is very pleased with, including a big star who is perfect for the role. We’re trying to settle on a director. This week it seems stalled, but call me next week and like Frankenstein’s monster, it may be suddenly very much alive again. There’s also a good possibility that I’ll be starring in a movie version of my play The Divine Sister. That really excites me. Sister GS: What does it mean to you that your films, such as Psycho Beach Party and Die, Mommy, Die!, have a good track record for being launching pads for young actors, including Lauren Ambrose, Amy Adams, Stark Sands and Nicholas Brendon? CB: I have to say that in each case, I could see that those young people were really wonderful, and each of them was so professional and committed to being good. There was no silliness or self-indulgence that you might associate with a young performer. Around fifteen years ago, I starred in a regional theatre production of the old musical Little Me in Birmingham, Michigan. There was a little blonde girl who had the smallest role in the ensemble but was amazingly talented. She could tap on toe, sing coloratura and belt and got a big laugh on her one line of dialogue. Her name was Kristin Chenoweth. I felt a little bit like Helen Lawson in Valley of the Dolls when she first sees Neely O’Hara. I knew the kid “really had it.” GS: Frances Conroy and Natasha Lyonne, who were in Die, Mommie, Die! with you, are regulars in very successful TV series, American Horror Story and Orange is the New Black Black, respectively. If you were offered a role in either or both shows, is that something you would consider doing? Why or why not? CB: I would love to be on American Horror Story. I think it’s so stylish and outrageous. They use all of those actors in such creative ways. It’s such a wonderful concept to have a repertory of actors playing completely different roles each

INTERVIEW season. It’s actually co-produced by one of the producers of the movie Die Mommie, Die! We had something of a disagreement years ago but life is too short to hold bitterness and resentment. I really do try and wipe the slate clean every few years. Gregg, start the write-in campaign. I’m serious. I loved Freak Show last season. I saw the first two episodes of Orange is the New Black and really enjoyed, it but somehow I’m too cheap and lazy to sign up for Netflix. I enjoyed what I saw and was thrilled to see so many ladies I know playing such fun roles. Kate Mulgrew is fantastic. A number of years ago, she starred in a play of mine called Our Leading Lady where she played Laura Keene, the actress who was onstage the night Lincoln was shot. She gave a wonderful performance. I’m thrilled and amazed at how she’s transformed herself in this series. GS: Orange is the New Black Black, as well as Transparent, prominently feature trans characters as someone who has often portrayed a woman on stage and onscreen. How do you feel about the increased visibility of trans characters on television? CB: Well, it’s about time! Trans people have been so ignored and marginalized in our society. I think it’s great that their lives and experiences are finally being explored and taken seriously. I love everything Laverne Cox represents. I’d like to see more media interest in F to M trans people. They have fascinating stories to tell. GS: Polly Bergen, who appeared in A Very Serious Person, passed away in 2014. Do you have any thoughts on working with Polly that you would care to share? CB: CB: The grim reaper seemed to be parked outside my apartment building this year. I’ve lost so many friends. Mind you, I have a tendency to become friends with people over eighty years old [laughs]; particularly women. My mother died when I was seven and all my life I seem to have developed big crushes on a certain kind of older, glamorous, smart maternal woman and if she wears ostrich feathers and false eyelashes I’m beside myself. Joan Rivers was a great friend of mine and I still can’t wrap my mind around the fact that she won’t be emailing me inviting me to go to the theatre with her. I adored Polly Bergen

“I’M VERY MUCH MYSELF TELLING TRUE FUNNY ANECDOTES ABOUT MY LIFE AND SINGING BEAUTIFUL SONGS IN THE MOST SIMPLE, HONEST, DIRECT WAY I KNOW HOW. ” as well. I met her only a few times years ago but really got to know her when she starred in the one feature movie I directed. She was just what you wanted her to be; tough, wise, funny, sweet, affectionate, salty. She knew everyone and when we were shooting the movie every day during lunch we’d settle on a certain category and ask Polly to reminisce. One day it would be famous comics and she’d regale with stories about Jack Benny and Milton Berle. The next day, it would be women singers and she’d tell us her experiences with Judy Garland. One day we talked about gangsters and she told us that when she was very young and playing in Las Vegas, she knew the notorious Bugsy Siegal! One of my favorite Polly stories was told to me by a friend who worked for a major advertising firm. A couple of years ago, Polly came in to audition for a voiceover. As she was going into the room, a young assistant said to her, “I hope you won’t be nervous” and Polly replied out of the side of her mouth “Don’t worry, kid. The mink’s paid for.” GS: What can you tell me about your new solo show? Will there be costume changes, including drag? CB: Oh, I’ll definitely be in drag. At times I’ve wondered why I am in drag in my act. Frankly, I’m very much myself telling true funny anecdotes about my life and singing beautiful songs in the most simple, honest, direct way I know how. I asked a friend if he thought I could get away with not being in drag. He replied “If I came to see you and you were NOT in drag, I’d feel like I went to Disneyland and Space Mountain was closed.” I said “Maybe more like the Tea Cup ride?” He said “No, Space Mountain.” I think he’s right. And you know, there’s something wonderful about a glamorous lady theguymag

standing in front of a microphone. So many of my plays evoke old movie genres and my act in a way evokes the old fashioned night club act of the fifties. Also, after nearly forty years in drag, I really am more confident and freer when I’m in costume. It’s an odd thing. In my show, I’m introduced as Charles Busch and then proceed to be me but just with the femininity dialed up a bit. You just have to see it, I guess. To answer your question, I wear one very stylish costume that allows me to play various characters and change moods and song styles. GS: Finally, Charles, when we spoke a couple of years ago, you mentioned that Primary Stages, had commissioned you to write a play, a comedy called You Never Know, Said the Widow. How was that production and are you working on any new ensemble theater pieces to which we can look forward? CB: That play ended up being called “The Tribute Artist” and it was produced in New York exactly a year ago. We got an absolute rave review in the New York Times and had a nice extended run. It’s published now and available for other theatres to produce it. It was a fascinating play to act. I played an aging female impersonator; a very difficult role for me to understand [laughs], who impersonates his reclusive dead landlady in order to sell her very valuable share with us on guymag.net

Manhattan townhouse. It’s a premise, a man posing as a lady, that’s been done a million times from Charlie’s Aunt to Mrs. Doubtfire, but was interesting for me as an openly gay man to explore how my character Jimmy discovers how similar he is to the lady he’s impersonating and how fluidly he can move in and out of that character and still have everyone believe he’s the dead landlady. By the second act, he’s wearing his own male clothes and just her wig and has dropped her slight European accent. Still, her distant relatives buy his act. I loved playing the part. I’m taking a break from writing any more plays right now. I’ve been very prolific over the past five years or so. I’m really enjoying exploring other venues of creative expression. My cabaret act for one thing. My accompanist Tom Judson and I have toured over the past year to among other places San Francisco, Palm Springs, Boston, Atlanta, New Orleans, New Hope, London and Paris. I’m working on a non-fiction book and I’ve been doing a lot of painting. Last year, Turner Classic Movies commissioned me to create a piece of original art inspired by classic film. They exhibited it at their annual film festival and also show it on TV and have made note cards. This is something I never thought would happen and it’s certainly very encouraging. I’ve been selling prints of it on my website Charlesbusch.com. So I may not be doing eight shows a week on the stage, but I’m having a lot of fun doing a lot of different things. I’m very, very fortunate and extremely grateful that every week I have something to look forward to. theguymag

How Owner Johnny Pak Is Giving Georgie’s Alibi a Facelift by Jameer

o The ownership of Georgie’s Alibi in Wilton Manors changed hands last November from longtime owners Jackson Padgett and Mark Negrete to veteran restaurateur Johnny Pak. “I wasn’t anticipating the sale, it was just the right timing,” said Pak. “I’ve been an investor for the last five years in the property and they asked me if I wanted to purchase,” said Pak. Pak is no stranger to the industry. In fact, he grew up in a household with parents who owned and operated restaurants and bars. While coming of age, he took an interest in the family businesses, eventually managing them and then taking over ownership. After 13 years of learning the ropes, he went on to develop and open his own business in Provincetown. Pak’s “baby” of 22 years, Monkey Bar, is a popular watering hole for the LGBT community in Ptown. It is known for its fun loving atmosphere and unique flare where one can find the best martinis, exotic drinks and specialty shots. They also offer fusion food such as sushi, Thai dishes and burgers. Pak said he is committed to bringing that same atmosphere and level of service to Wilton Manors. The name “Georgie’s Alibi” will be exanded to “Georgie’s Alibi Monkey Bar.” “It’s a combo,” Pak said. “A feel of both old and new!” Pretty much everything about the new establishment will stay the same, but just with a “face-lift,” Pak said. The current staff will stay on with some additional new hires and the location will remain open during the ongoing renovations. The logos of Georgie’s Alibi and Monkey Bar will be combined and a new one created. Pak plans to remodel the building with new lighting and new paint.

Johnny Pak The most noticeable changes will be to the menu. All of the traditional items we’ve come to love from Georgie’s will still be available with an introduction of a whole slew of new entrees. As a trained chef, Pak has taken a hands-on approach to revamping the kitchen. “I saw the need for a sit-down Chinese restaurant in the area,” Pak said, so he has decided to introduce some new Asianinspired items on the menu. He is also going to serve two or three daily lunch specials that won’t be found on the standard menu. As an added bonus, everything will be made fresh-to-order, in-house with an option for take-out and a possible delivery service in the future. Pak said he will launch a

Wednesday night drink special called “M&M,” which stands for margaritas and mojitos (but no official start date for that has been provided yet). And yes, $3 Long Island Iced Teas every Thursday night will remain. New forms of entertainment and events catering to the bear community are in the works. “I am working hard and diligently to get things up-to-date and make the customers happy,” Pak said. “I’ve been a customer since they opened 18 years ago. This is a community institution. It’s the gay ‘Cheers’ of Wilton Manors.” Pak plans to have all the new changes completed by September or October this year in time for an 18th anniversary celebration.

Oh, Dear!

As with the greatest magicians and magic tricks, Tyler Measom and Justin Weinstein’s beguiling doc An Honest Liar (Left Turn/Pure Mutt), about the mesmerizing life of gay escape artist and fraud debunker The Amazing Randi (aka James Randi), keeps us, well, amazed. When Randi says “No matter how smart or well-educated you are, you can be deceived,” little does he realize how much that applies to him as well. Once considered the heir to Houdini’s legacy, nowadays at 86, you are more likely to see The Amazing Randi giving a TED Talk than freeing himself from a straitjacket and shackles.

Randi, a man who devoted his entire life to using the tools of deception to uncover real deception — ranging from psychics such as Uri Geller to faith healers such as Peter Popoff — became an unwitting victim of deception. The recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, Randi created his own sensation with “The Carlos Hoax,” a false channeler portrayed by his life-partner, the artist Jose Alvarez, in order to prove how easy it was to fool both the media and the public. But it’s the fooling of Randi, in a situation involving Alvarez and his true identity that is the ultimate act of sleight of hand. Without revealing too much more about it (the element of surprise is essential to magic, after all), suffice to say that this doc about “honest liar” Randi, a “con on the right side,” is enchanting.

There’s been more than a little bit of fuss made over Selma director Ava DuVernay, an African-American woman, being overlooked for an Oscar nomination. Truth be told, there ought to be the same amount of fuss being made over Justin Simien, an out, gay African-American man being overlooked for a Best Director Oscar. Homophobic and racist much, Hollywood? It might seem strange to see Dear White People and Selma being discussed in the same place, but they have much in common, particularly in the way that both films address race issues and relations. But Dear White People does it in a much more creative, non-traditional and effective way. Set on the Ivy League campus of Winchester University, where diversity issues plague the student body and faculty alike, Dear White People is the best movie Spike Lee never made. Unassuming and undeclared gay sophomore Lionel (Tyler James Williams) is about to get more attention than he can handle. A writer who has caught the attention of George (Brandon Alter), the gay editor of the school newspaper, Lionel gets the assignment of a lifetime. The question is whether or not he can navigate the treacherous social network and get the story he needs. Here’s who he’ll have to contend with. There’s homophobic Kurt (Kyle Gallner), the son of the school’s president. Sophomore and Econ major Coco (Teyonah Parris), about whom there is “nothing ‘hood,” who would love nothing more than to get a part in a reality show being cast on campus. In the meantime, her vlog gets her plenty of attention. Junior Troy (Brandon P Bell), who is running for office in student elections, isn’t just majoring in Poli Sci, he’s also the son of Dean Fairbanks (Dennis Haysbert), who is grooming Troy for a future brighter than his own. Biracial Samantha (Tessa Thompson) defeats ex-boyfriend Troy in the election and also hosts the popular radio show Dear White People. It should also be noted that she is sleeping with white T.A. Gabe (Justin Dobies). What makes this cast of characters, and the story in which they appear, both remarkable and entertaining is the way that Simien makes us laugh and think right from the start. quite an achievement at a time when tensions are high on the subject of race, as well as gay issues. Blu-ray/Digital HD special features include director commentary, deleted scenes and outtakes, a featurette, a music video, parody and much more.

When a movie opens with a character caressing, sniffing and then burying his face in a pillow (presumably crying), you can bet that the person who previously slept on that pillow is dead. In Love Is The Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon (Strand), the 1998 film from gay writer/director John Maybury (now available on Blu-ray), the crier is gay, British, 20th century painter Francis Bacon (out actor Derek Jacobi). The dead man whose pillow Bacon embraces is George (a pre-James Bond Daniel Craig), Bacon’s lover, described as a “big brute” and “not quite the Nietzsche of the football team,” a suicidal thief who literally dropped out of the sky and landed in Bacon’s studio (he was casing the joint and fell through a skylight). From the floor of Bacon’s studio to his bed, George becomes both lover and muse to the painter. At its most effective, Love Is the Devil does a brilliant job of depicting late 1960s/ early 1970s queer life and culture. The pub scenes at the Colony Room involving Bacon’s circle of friends, including proprietor Muriel (Tilda Swinton), who refers to Bacon as her daughter, capture the Boys In The Band banter and bitchiness of the era, and are a highlight of the film. However, the film turns too artsy and pretentious when it comes to depicting Bacon’s process. It’s obvious what Maybury was trying to attempt, but the paint never quite saturates the canvas. Also, be aware that the depiction of the relationship between Bacon and George is ugly, pretty much from start to finish. Neither man can be described as nice, and the more alcohol that is consumed (let’s just say there’s a lot), the more toxic they become to each other. Love Is the Devil is possibly best known for containing Craig’s bathtub nude scene. It doesn’t disappoint. Blu-ray bonus features include commentary by Maybury and Jacobi, as well as the original theatrical trailer.

Packing for Land, Air, & Sea

No matter where you are going or how you plan on getting there, every vacation starts out with preparation. Of course, you first decide where to go and then make the arrangements to get there, but once you’re done with that and before you actually make the journey, you are assigned with the daunting task of packing for your trip. They’re so many questiona that need to be answered when getting your belongings in order to head out on your voyage. You definitely don’t want to leave the important things behind. But what you need to take with you and, at times, what you’re prohibited to bring can vary widely depending on different factors of your trip. One major factor is your mode of transportation. How will you be getting to and from your destination? Will you be hitting the road? Are you heading out to sea? Or perhaps you’ll be taking a flight. Each form of transportation requires you to pack different necessities, which in some cases are dictated by strict government guidelines to ensure every travelers’ safety. So how do you make packing less unnerving and remember all the essentials needed while staying within the restricted guidelines? The best way is to be organized by crafting two key packing list: Primary List and Last-minute List. The Primary List works as your overall guide to packing everything you’ll need. It could be a tedious task when done by yourself. But luckily you have the Internet to help. You can find multiple “packing list makers” online that provide easy-to-print checklist that are categorized by your mode of transportation. Some even use multiple filters to customize a tailored list specific to your travel itinerary. Your Last-minute List is used to ensure that you pack your everyday items right before you leave. Or to purchase those items you didn’t have available for your primary list. Travel toothpaste perhaps or your cellphone charger you used the night before; these items can be easily overlooked and forgotten. Make a list of them and place the list in an area you routinely check so not to leave any essentials behind or spend unnecessary bucks on unfamiliar items because you forgot to purchase them at home. So what are the rules and how should you pack for the different means of travel? Lets start with the mode of transportation that has become highly monitored--air travel. When traveling on an airplane, it is extremely important to know the TSA (the department in charge of US public travel safety) guidelines for luggage whether you’ll be traveling with a carry-on or a checked bag. Remember the 3-1-1 rule for carry-ons. All liquids, gels, aerosols, creams and pastes must be stored in a container no bigger than 3.4 ounces (100ml); all these items must then be secured in a 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag with only 1 bag per passenger. Any items described above that exceed the max 3.4 ounces need to be packed in your checked bag or they will be taken away at the screening checkpoint. Some helpful tips to make your airport experience easier include wearing shoes that slip off easily and forgo wearing a belt to avoid hassle when its time to go through the security checkpoint and you’re asked to remove them. heading out on a long travel trip, pack a snack to avoid paying high airport prices. Weigh your suitcase beforehand to make sure it’s within your baggage allowance to avoid paying additional fees. Keep all your personal information and everyday items (phone charger, etc.) in your carry-on so they’re readily accessible if you should need them. Not many travel by boat, so packing for the trip can be as foreign as your destination. Some helpful tips to packing for a boat excursion: Pack minimally, bring outfits (preferably dark colors to avoid any embarrassing wet see-through spectacles) you can mix and match because even on big cruise liners, cabin space is limited so bring luggage that can be tucked away. No matter the weather, bring items to keep you warm. The cruising speeds can sometime cause a nippy breeze. Pack footwear that have traction to avoid slipping on the wet decks. Consider packing motion sickness pills, tight fitted hats, an eyeglass chain (also good for sunglasses), and a travel mug with a secure top just in case the boat is a little too rocky for you. The means of travel by land can include trains, buses and cars. Although considered different forms of transportation, they all share key items to pack and essential to-dos. Remember to always be mindful to use the restroom at every scheduled stop, to avoid any out-of-theway stops or using undesirable mobile facilities. Try to bring finger snacks that aren’t messy and are light on the stomach — don’t want to get noxious on a road trip. Travel with a personal pillow and blanket for a comfortable nap. And don’t forget your earplugs and eye mask to drowned out your surroundings. Carry with you antiseptic wipes and an

emergency kit just in case. At all times, keep on you safety items: flashlight, pepper spray, a whistle. Make sure to have access to a map so you always can pinpoint your location and know your travel route. o If you are looking for a CASUAL beach place, you will find none better than the Diner By-TheSea. Located close to the beach, you’ll find Billy, the owner of the Diner, often flipping eggs, slinging hash and pouring coffee to the locals, tourists, and in-season patrons that come to this great place open--seven days a week from 6 am to 2 pm. This restaurant has amazing food with an equally amazing cast of characters providing the service. They will always bring you a smile in the early morning, as well as a hot brewed cup of coffee, cappuccino, or your favourite morning beverage to start your day. Diner By-TheSea serves breakfast and lunch every day and it sure is a place to call home away from home. They are known for their thin pancakes, Lobster Benedict, and Mimosas on the weekends (that’s right Mimosas). A complete breakfast starts at as little as $4.50. This place reminds me a bit like Cheers where everyone knows your name. Granted, I have been there more than a couple of times, yet I watch the warmth and charm extend to every patron that walks through the door. Billy often introduces me to people on either side of me (I like to sit at the counter) and tells them about me and tells me about them! Florida Aids Walk The Florida AIDS Walk helps combat the HIV epidemic annually in Fort Lauderdale. This year’s event includes a performance by rap divas Salt-N-Pepa. The walk begins at South Beach Park in Fort Lauderdale Beach and will include food trucks, tents in the sand, along with a cavalcade of walkers there to support this cause. Now as many of the LGTB community take on roles as heads of families, the importance of fitness takes on a whole new significant dimension! Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a new day with unique challenges and exciting possibilities.

If you are head of a family, the healthy habit of exercise is important not only for you and your partner/spouse, but for everyone who depends upon you! Because of the alarming and escalating rate of obesity, and the epidemic of Type II diabetes among our kids, it is more important than ever to get your kids into the routine of regular exercise. It’s not that hard because children as a whole like having fun and staying active. Instead of treating workout time like another chore, make it an outing the whole family can enjoy together. Here are some fun exercise ideas. Bike riding is a great way to work out and keep the family outdoors. Turn a routine bike ride into a family day trip by riding to your favorite destination. If possible, stick with a safe bike path and always wear helmets for optimum safety. Take along some healthy and handy snacks to fuel you energy along the way! Don’t get stuck with walking the family dog by yourself. Sure, when Rover was a puppy, he was the “cutest thing,” but now that he’s grown should he be all your responsibility? Get your kids to walk the dog with you! This will get them off the couch, or out from behind the computer, and teach them to be responsible pet owners at the same time. A trip to the local park is a great way to enjoy fresh air and sunshine and keep the whole family active. Pack games, a ball, a Frisbee, and a healthy basket of snacks, all to enjoy while you are there. A trip to the neighborhood park will also get the kids out of the house to meet and mingle with other families. Socializing is a great way to share experiences and learn about others. Sports recreational facilities and training campuses offer an array of activities for you, your spouse/partner and the kids and are ideal for bigger families. In a safe environment like this there is something for everyone, from obstacle courses and swimming, to dodge ball and tug of war, there are tons of ways to be active and have lots of fun. As the head of your family, it is so important to lead by setting the correct example. Invest in your kids’ future by becoming the best role model you can be. If you stay fit and active, your children will follow your example. Introduce your children to a fitness lifestyle that will influence them for years to come. Eat healthy and the kids will likely learn and adhere to good, sound nutrition for the rest of their lives.
