Free Yourself From Buyer’s Remorse At Towne Clothiers
by Jameer

No matter your age or size, Towne Clothiers of Wilton Manors offers bright colors, bold prints and exciting patterns to mix and match for your next eye-catching outfit. All merchandise is priced astonishingly low that even the most frugal shopper will appreciate. During the last 18 years and counting, owner Jon Anthony has opened six different retail stores on Wilton Drive. The key to his longevity has been the ability to adapt to the community’s needs and desires, as well as keeping an eye out for new locations. “Times have changed and different parts of the street have become the new hotspots,” said Anthony. The prices at Towne Clothiers diverge greatly from his first designer-label store. Every item costs $20 or less -- accessories, shirts, shorts, pants, colognes -- and it’s not for a limited time only.

These are everyday prices! Get a $120 Bespoke shirt or $100 Victorious pair of jeans for only $20. Where can you beat that? “I learned especially since the stock market crashed that customers want value and don’t want to be taken advantage of,” Anthony said. “We make a profit, but we’re not gouging them to do so.” Anthony and his husband, Brad Schwibner, have been adamant about ensuring customer satisfaction. “They’re bright, easy, breezy clothing that pop, which are perfect for the Florida lifestyle,” Anthony mentioned. Their commitment to high quality at bargain prices has attracted both locals and travelers alike, with many becoming regulars. In fact, they recently shipped a bunch of merchandise to their new Alaskan clients who could not find the same quality goods in their hometheguymag

town after visiting Anthony’s store while they were on vacation in South Florida. Each item has flair, a detail here and there that catches your attention, from floral, fitted and numbered referee shirts to shorts with a bandana print. It’s the perfect place to get a fresh look every weekend without breaking the piggy bank. “It’s important to us that our clients come back every week and are happy with what they get,” Anthony said. “I haven’t processed a return yet!” To catch all the new styles as they come in, visit Towne Clothiers’ Facebook page at www.facebook.com/towne. clothiers. The Long Ride: Scott Eastwood Talks Gay Fans, Gay Marriage And Being an ‘Outcast’ by CHRIS AZZOPARDI
Scott Eastwood has already provided a generous hunk of swoon-worthy shirtlessness, but the model-turned-actor is just getting started. In his first lead role as Luke Collins in the film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ The Longest Ride, Clint’s sexy son makes you feel all the feels as a bull rider pursuing a hardwon girl (and, for good measure, flashing his now-famous abs). During our recent interview, the 29-year-old talked about winning over the gay world as a full-time stud, identifying with his father’s Libertarian beliefs on LGBT equality, his Martin Luther King man crush, and keeping his thoughts (and other stuff) in check during sex scenes. Scott, you were obviously blessed with good genes, and people have taken note of that, many of them in the gay community. At this point in your career, how aware are you that gay men enjoy you? Now I am – you’re bringing it to my attention! I love it. I don’t discriminate against any fans. Fans are fans, and gay men are great. I support gay marriage and the whole bit. I think everybody should be able to be with who they want to be with. My dad is the same way. He’s a total Libertarian – everyone leave everyone alone. Everyone live their own private life. And why does everyone gotta be all up in arms about it? Your dad put it best when he spoke about gay marriage: “I don’t give a fuck about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?!” I’d give the same fucking quote – that’s perfect. I’m a firm believer that everyone’s human. We’re only on this planet for a short period of time, and we should all just be as kind as we can to other people because, in life, all you really have is how you affect people, in a negative way or a positive way.

How did you learn to embrace that mentality? My mom – and my dad too – was really a firm believer (of it), and really compassionate and selfless. She’s such a firm believer that in life you gotta be compassionate. Everyone’s from different walks of life and everyone has their own reality, and to be uncompassionate is not very human. You were a model for so long – I wasn’t really a model for that long. People say that, but they don’t really know. I mean, I did a couple of modeling jobs, but I never really pursued that. I was like, “Oh well, that’s not really for me. I’m gonna do something different.” Why wasn’t modeling for you? I didn’t find it creative enough. It was cool, though. It paid some bills when I was in college as a struggling, broke actor. Your body, however, is breaking barriers. I read a web comment recently that said, “Even I, as a Gold Star lesbian, look at this guy and state categorically, ‘Ahummina-hummina-hummina.’” What’s it like to know you can have that effect on even the lesbian community? (Laughs) That’s awesome! I mean, I don’t really know what I’ve done that’s worthy of it. You’ve taken your shirt off a few times, so there’s that. (Laughs) Yup! The hat, the Levis, the boots. You rock that look like you were born a cowboy. There’s probably a little bit of cowboy in me somewhere. When it comes to gay roles, could you see yourself playing one? Is it too soon to get you in a Brokeback Mountain remake? Oh my gosh – that’s funny! (Laughs) To me, it’s all about the script and the director. I’m very director-driven and material-oriented, so if it’s a great script and a great director, then yeah. theguymag

What do you look for in a great script and a great director? Ohh. That’s hard to put into effect. It’s gotta have that je ne sais quoi, as they say. You don’t know why it’s amazing but it is. What about this Nicholas Sparks movie stuck out to you when you read the script? Well, for one, I love (director) George Tillman, Jr. – his films are great. I loved Men of Honor. I thought it was a fantastic movie. I thought that movie was an old ’90s drama, which don’t exist anymore. I was really so excited to work with him. I thought it was a very unorthodox choice to have him direct a Nicholas Sparks movie. And then geez – what else? The script was great. The name of the movie, The Longest Ride, really lends itself to a porn spinoff down the line, don’t you think? That would be amazing. That’d be so funny if that happened. And why not?! Your sex scene in this movie wasn’t your first. I’ve had a few. I’ve had about four or five. What’s the trick to shooting a sexy share with us on guymag.net
sex scene? Keeping your thoughts sort of... controlled. In addition to keeping other things “controlled.” (Laughs) I’m only one man! I can only do what I can do. But I think it’s sexy. I mean, being in a shower with a beautiful, sexy woman – I was turned on! I had fun! In The Longest Ride or during every sex scene you’ve done? (Laughs) Some more than others. You’ve shown full butt before, and in The Longest Ride, you graciously give us a glimpse. With this movie, how was it determined how much butt would be in the shot? (Laughs) For me, I didn’t really care. The butt thing – to me, this was a really classy story and a really classy movie, so I didn’t care about showing a little butt in there. That’s part of it. Sex scenes – you see a little bit of action, right? And that’s what makes a good sex scene. Not too much. You don’t wanna give it all away. You gotta leave something to the imagination. theguymag

Has your father seen the movie? He hasn’t. How do you feel about him seeing those scenes? I’m really proud of the film, and I hope he enjoys it. It’s not all the time you do a film you’re really proud of. When you’re in a movie about love and relationships and sex, people are interested in your own personal experiences. (Laughs) How do you deal with those kinds of questions? Are you an open book? Partially. I don’t give everything away. You gotta have your private life too. But I’m not shy. I love women. Well, then, barn sex – yay or nay? I mean, why not?! On Twitter recently you said your man crush is your dad. Who are some of your other man crushes? People who have the balls to change the world. Guys like Martin Luther King, who said things at a time when they weren’t acceptable. People who are out doing great things. Guys like Enric Sala who are saving the world. The Pristine Seas project. People who are working toward curing cancer, or working with kids – that’s really great stuff to me.

What are or have been some of the challenges of creating a career independent of your father? That people take me seriously. I’ve been doing it for 12 years, and I always say Hollywood is like high school. If you’re not the cool kid, you’re the outcast. And nobody really cares and people don’t take you seriously. I was never the cool kid. Definitely not the cool kid. And so I split. I split LA. I lived in San Diego. And there’s been a couple of moments I thought about throwing in the towel, for sure. I once heard from Mel Gibson. His advice was, “Just stick around and keep plugging away at it. Keep your head down and keep working hard.” With so much attention on your shirtlessness, is there more pressure to prove yourself beyond the hunky exterior? I don’t really think about it like that. I don’t spend a lot of time on it. There’d be a lot of wasted time if I let that consume my thoughts. I just keep my head down and do the best I can. Hoosier Hullabaloo
by
Dan Woog
The words “NCAA” and “moral high ground” seldom share the same sentence. Yet that lofty peak is exactly where college sport’s most influential body found itself recently, on the flat terrain of Indiana. The reason was political. The Hoosier State – “The Crossroads of America,” according to its official motto – had just passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Gov. Mike Pence wasted little time signing the bill, which would allow businesses and individuals to claim religion as a defense in discrimination lawsuits. Because sexual orientation is not protected under Indiana law, LGBT people could be refused services, or suffer other forms of mistreatment. Indiana also happens to be the crossroads of many athletic events and organizations. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is headquartered there; so too is the National Federation of State High School Associations. It’s the site of the annual Big Ten football championship game, through at least 2021. It’s home to NFL and NBA teams, as well as America’s most famous 500-mile automobile race. Although sports and politics seldom mix, the sports world reacted quickly, and vehemently,

to the governor’s signature. In sports, timing is everything. Part of the reason for the nearly instant reaction is that just a few days after the legislation was passed, Indianapolis was set to host college basketball’s men’s Final Four tournament. The eyes of the nation were fixed on a city in which, apparently, gay hoops fans – or players, coaches, staff members, sportswriters, and anyone else associated with the event – could now be denied service. What’s more, the women’s Final Four is scheduled for the same city next year. Mark Emmert – president of the NCAA, which has a $1-a-year lease in Indianapolis that runs through 2060 (!) – issued a statement almost immediately. He said his organization would examine how the law “might affect future events, (Photo by (bigstock.com) as well as our workforce.” Emmert added, “The NCAA national office and our members are deeply committed to providing an inclusive environment for all our events. We are especially concerned about how this legislation could affect our student-athletes and employees. We will work diligently to assure student-athletes competing in, and visitors attending, next theguymag

week’s men’s Final Four in Indianapolis are not impacted negatively by this bill.” Jim Buzinski had a front-row view of the Hoosier hullabaloo. The co-founder of OutSports, a website founded in 1999 that has become the go-to site for LGBT sports news and commentary, he was both surprised and impressed by the quick reaction of athletes and organizations. “It wasn’t just the NCAA,” Buzinski said. “Charles Barkley spoke out too, on the eve of the biggest college (basketball) event.” The former NBA star – now an opinionated and controversial television analyst –forcefully declared that Indiana should no longer host any major sporting events. The timing of the Final Four was an important “trigger” in the quick sports world reaction, Buzinski noted. That trigger was pulled a year earlier, when Arizona passed its own Religious Freedom Restoration Act. As it became clear that the National Football League might remove the state from consideration as a Super Bowl host (no idle threat; the NFL moved the game from Tempe to the Rose Bowl in 1993, because the state never established an official Mar(Photo by (bigstock.com) tin Luther King holiday), Gov. Jan Brewer refused to sign the bill. “It seemed pretty spontaneous,” Buzinski said of the opposition to Indiana’s legislation. “There were no LGBT sports groups saying, ‘We have to make this an issue.’ People pay attention when sports figures speak up. The media asked questions, and it took off from there.” Individuals acted too. University of Southshare with us on guymag.net
ern California athletic director Pat Haden chose not to attend a college football playoff meeting in Indianapolis. “I am the proud father of a gay son,” he tweeted. “#EmbraceDiversity.” After a disastrous appearance by Gov. Pence on a Sunday talk show, the Indiana legislature went from defense to offense. It passed a revised version of the law, which prohibits businesses from using it in court as a refusal to offer services based on sexual orientation. (However, sexual orientation is still not a protected category in Indiana law.) “The Final Four was a line in the sand they didn’t want to cross,” Buzinski said. “They didn’t want people talking about it when the games began. The situation was getting untenable. Once the revised bill was signed, they were off the hook.” The issue is quiet – for now. But it won’t go away. Without specific mention of sexual orientation in Indiana’s anti-discrimination statutes, LGBT people in the state still lack legal protection. That means NCAA employees – plus anyone associated with the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers and Indy 500 – must remain wary of the “Crossroads of America.” Dan Woog is a journalist, educator, soccer coach and gay activist. Darryl Marksberry:
BARTENDER OF THE WEEK
Duty, Honor & Cocktails
by cliff dunn
Mona’s Cocktail Lounge bartender Darryl Marksberry is as plain-spoken and unpretentious as he is easy-onthe eyes. “I’m going on a date tonight, and this is how I’m dressed,” Marksberry explains, pointing out his datewear ensemble of shorts, t-shirt and flip-flops. The brunette hottie may get his unruffled worldview geographically: He was born in the small Kentucky town of Edgewood, and was raised in various villages around the state. Marksberry says he left Kentucky “as soon as I got bored with fast food.” Marksberry’s flirtation with fast food began while he was still in high school, and after coming to the realization that there were “bigger and better things” waiting him in the wider world, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps when he was 19. In uniform for a little less than two years, he served in the Military Occupational Specialty of radio communications. “When someone gets into trouble, they call the Marines,” Marksberry explains. “When the Marines get into trouble, they dial 9-1-1, and I’m the one who hits ‘send’.” Leaving the Marines at 21, Marksberry didn’t have a clear picture of how he wanted to pursue his life. “I moved to Florida,” he recalls. “I thought I would try my hand—again—at food management. I did that for about eight months, but it wasn’t any more satisfying for me than when I was doing it before the Marines.” A chance encounter led to his pursuing a different
professional path: adult film star. “I came down from West Palm Beach to Fort Lauderdale with a friend,” Marksberry explains, “and someone introduced himself as an adult entertainment scout, and would I be interested in doing adult films. “I have always loved to entertain people,” he acknowledges (and more on that in a minute). “I thought to myself, ‘Why not?’ The funniest part is that it was the longest job interview of my life, and although it was for adult video, I didn’t get naked or get off,” he adds with a laugh. After two years onscreen (using the professional name “Tony Douglas”), Marksberry felt the siren call of change again. Those changes would involve an element of his life that literally sings to Marksberry: his musical talent. Along with the piano, he is a more-than-accomplished trumpet, trombone, guitar, and saxophone player, among other instruments. And he sings, As well as playing with the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, Marksberry is a regular at amateur singing and karaoke events across the breadth of the Gayborhood and beyond. “I’ve been fortunate in that I have met a lot of great people through my music,” he enthuses. helped Marksberry find his way professionally into Greater Fort Lauderdale’s gay nightlife scene, first as a barback at Sidelines Sports Bar on Wilton Drive, and more recently as the early shift bartender at Mona’s Cocktail Lounge on East Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. Born on March 16, Marksberry got a jump on his 27th birthday by celebrating two days early at Mona’s with a 27-minute open bar for patrons (for which he paid). Of his job, he says: “I am having more fun working here than anything I’ve ever done before.” I ask him what he sees himself doing five years from now. “The funny thing is, I asked myself that same question five years ago—and I thought I would be a millionaire by now, so who knows?” he answers. What does he consider his bartending “drink to impress?” “The martini is one of the most well-balanced drinks there is, if it’s made right,” Marksberry sagely offers. He adds: “If you want to impress someone, make them a Long island Iced Tea that tastes like ice tea.” That should be music to anyone’s ears.

GRACE JONES THE MUSICAL OF MY LIFE COMES TO THE BBC Gay icon Grace Jones has spent decades doing exactly as she pleases, always with a somewhat menacing smile on her face, and this has proven to be the key to her success. She modeled, she sang, she actressed (is that a word?), she posed in nightclubs and she dated Dolph Lundgren--never once with anything less than absolute command of space. This would make her the perfect subject for a documentary, and now thanks to the BBC, she will be. Director Sophie Fiennes (The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology, the weirdly entertaining documentary about philosopher Slavoj Žižek) is handling duties behind the camera. How will she capture the everything-ness of her subject? The BBC explains it this way, describing the project as an “observational portrait” and “a multinarrative journey through the private and public realms of the legendary singer and performer.” We accept – and wait – for 2016 to roll around and deliver. 54

IT’S REALLY HAPPENING: DIANE SAWYER TALKS TO BRUCE JENNER Speculation and tragic car accidents and fodder for hack stand-up comics: that’s been the life of Bruce Jenner recently. The legendary Olympic athlete-turnedreality show stepfather for a bunch of sisters named Kardashian, without even really meaning to, has become an object of fascination to tabloids and, finally, to the LGBT community. Speculation over Jenner’s possible transgender identity has reached a feverish pitch. Well, now, it’s assumed, the questions will be laid to rest as Jenner’s interview with Diane Sawyer – reportedly taped in February – will air on ABC as a two-hour special on April 24. We don’t know what will be said, but it’s clear from the 120-minute slot, that it’s something, and maybe it’ll finally make Jamie Foxx aim his bad jokes elsewhere.

ALMODOVAR’S SILENCIO DUE TO MAKE NOISE Spain’s most well-known filmmaker, , recently gave fans a taste of his old, irreverent self with the frantic, silly, I’m So Excited! But it seems like that brief detour into goofy, dirty comedy was only a palate cleanser, because with Silencio, the director is returning to serious drama and his preferred “female universe.” Details are few and far between, plot-wise, but the film seems to revolve around a woman named Julieta – played by Spanish actresses Adriana Ugarte and Emma Suarez as the character’s younger and older versions, respectively – and the ebb and flow of satisfaction and success in her life. Almodovar is known for casting his films from a stable of his favorite actors over and over, and dedicated followers will notice the likes of Dario Grandinetti (Talk to Her) and longtime Almodovar staple Rossy de Palma (Women On the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) in the cast. But this time around, those are the only repeat names, and the cast is filled with new (to this director, at least) faces and names. Maybe he’s building a new team for 2016? share with us on guymag.net
PROFESSIONAL SPORTS’ LGBT HEROES ARE OUT TO WIN
In a world where Michael Sam comes out before he makes it to the NFL, no matter the consequences, it’s easy to forget that not so long ago, his decision would have been unthinkable. Athletes in professional sports have long paid the price of silence, usually waiting until their most active years were behind them before coming out. This is history we shouldn’t forget, and now Out to Win, the latest documentary from director Malcolm Ingram (Small Town Gay Bar, Continental), is making the festival rounds. The stories of people like Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, David Kopay, Jason Collins, Billy Bean and John Amaechi, all speaking about their careers first-hand, are collected in this moving portrait of the last non-religious American job where coming out as LGBT can cost everything. Cable and DVD and streaming will happen soon enough, but if you’re near a good indie film fest, be sure to give it your support.

Arron Rimpley: Prepare to Be Amazed by
Cliff Dunn
“I was only going to stay for six months,” Arron Rimpley insists with a laugh, recalling the day 22 years ago when he arrived in South Florida from the cold confines of Colorado. The owner of the Gallery of Amazing Things in Dania Beach (481 S Federal Highway, Dania Beach) was in his early 20s when he first came to the Sunshine State. “I had $200 in my pocket, and I spent the first few days in Miami living out of my car,” he adds. How things change in just a couple of short decades. No longer living out of his car, Rimpley is president and founder of one of South Florida’s most unique galleries. The Gallery of Amazing Things is located on the site of the former Graves Museum of Archeology and Natural History, which closed in 2004. Boasting more than 50,000 square feet of space, Rimpley and his professional team have created an environment that is—true to its name—filled with amazing things, including art, antiques, collectible ceramic, porcelain, crystals, and china, and truly one-of-a-kind items—among them: 50 million year-old prehistoric fossils, antique crystal chandeliers, vintage automobiles (we’re talking Henry Ford and Chrysler Brothers vintage), rare World War II Zeiss naval binoculars, and antique outboard boat motors. Upstairs, in the Gallery’s second floor, the Wiener Museum displays beautiful ceramics and collectibles—including the world’s largest Royal Doulton collection. The Gallery is much more than that. As Rimpley describes it, “For all practical purposes, it’s a cultural center. A place for shows, events, fundraisers, and exhibitions. And we have kept alive the natural history museum concept.” Rimpley purchased the closed Graves Museum—lock, stock, and Tyrannosaurus Rex façade, mounted and facing South Federal Highway—in December 2012. “We began the restoration almost immediately,” Rimpley recalls. “We 58

moved our offices into the building in March 2013, and opened a few months later. Rimpley and his business partner, Gregg Whittecar, had their work cut out for them. They invested more than $1 million to restore the entire space—Dania’s second biggest piece of real estate—including ceilings, floors, and wiring. The result has been nothing short of inspiring, both for Rimpley and for the numerous clients, companies, and organizations that have hosted major events in the venue. “We have really created something special,” Rimpley acknowledges. “When we first opened, it was such a vast, cavernous space—I used to get lost walking around the building. Now, we’re bursting at the seams.” Rimpley admits that much of the Gallery’s exposure has come by wordof-mouth. “A lot of people find out about the Gallery because someone they know has been here,” he explains. “This is really part of our marketing success, because even though we have a spectacular selection of art and merchandise, we are really a small business, with the associated marketing budget, so the word-of-mouth has been very successful in promoting us.” There’s also something to be said for hosting internationally-renowned trade shows and events. “We had the International Ceramics and Glass Fair at the Gallery in January,” Rimpley says. “That event brought in 1,500 to the Gallery—in just three days. We had so much follow-up from that fair, and we want to do other shows in that vein. That is the kind of event we want to continue to welcome to the Gallery, like one we have just finalized with Pandora Radio, which we’re really looking forward to.” Rimpley spends a lot of his time traveling, to trade shows, to visit vendors and collectors, and to promote the Gallery theguymag

to an international audience, which includes travels to New York City, London and other locales, looking for merchandise and ideas. “We are very focused on event planning, and want to bring that to an entirely new level, including event conceptualization and production.” Rimpley notes that he has had to adapt to changes and uncertainties in the marketplace. “I’ve had to be flexible in my approach to business,” he acknowledges. “There are lots of challenges out there. People are buying things in a different way, and we have to stay competitive and relevant in these changing times. “I realize that this is a tough sell—so we have to deliver.” He’s grateful that the response to the Gallery of Amazing Things has been overwhelmingly positive. “Things are working out well for all parties involved: The corporate clients who have hosted parties and events love the venue, the artists whose work we display love the space, the guests and visitors are blown away by the art and exhibits, and, of course, by the Gallery itself.” As for the future, Rimpley has plenty of ideas. He and Whittecar have launched the “House of Whitley” luxury brand, share with us on guymag.net
which features conversation-starting natural and historical artifacts, as well as painstakingly curated fine art. The brand is also heavily immersed in the Galleryhosted events, included plans for workshops, seminars, and lecture series. Rimpley’s ambitions don’t end there. “I would love to be an auctioneer,” he says. “I believe there’s a place for a highend, quality international auction house. I think we can fill that niche in a way that it hasn’t been done before. That having been said, I would be very happy to be where I am now. I feel very blessed. “There’s a demand in the world for beautiful and unique things. There’s so much today that’s mass-produced; it’s just not special. I want to tell a story with what I sell.”

MUSIC
Sufjan Stevens, Reba McEntire
by CHRIS AZZOPARDI
Sufjan Stevens, Carrie & Lowell Grief guides Sufjan Stevens’ muse on Carrie & Lowell. It’s a remarkably wrenching release from the indie darling. “The evil it spread like a fever ahead / It was night when you died, my firefly,” a solemn Stevens laments, conjuring a place of peace and rest, and then delivering this stark reality like an afterthought: “We’re all gonna die.” A heartbreaking backand-forth between Sufjan and his late mother, who died shortly after a surprise stomach cancer diagnosis, the song’s simple piano progression enkindles a contrasting calmness to the intensity of this final exchange – a reconciliation of the past, the harsh truth of the future – that floats hypnotically, like a windblown feather making its final descent. His portrayal of the inevitable is tragically beautiful, and it’s also uncharacteristically direct, a noticeable switch for the press-shy, cryptically-prone Stevens. Carrie & Lowell is a memoir, capturing a lifechanging tragedy with aching frankness and conveying it in its rawest guitarrendered form. His despondency on the dreamy “Should Have Known Better,” which acknowledges the trauma of 60

being abandoned by his mother at “3, maybe 4,” is spiked with hope – the promise of a new niece, a ray of light that cuts through the song’s otherwise sullen sensibility. It evokes the cyclical nature of humanity so beautifully, and in just five minutes. Stevens also lets in some light on “Drawn to the Blood,” his call to a spiritual guide eventually ebbing into a lush, orchestral reprieve. Grief, in all its emotional complexities, has rarely been as fully embodied as it is on the compelling Carrie & Lowell, a work rich in the reality of human nature, from life to death to life again. Grade: A-
Reba McEntire, Love Somebody Suffering through a recent breakup? Regretting a hookup? Reba’s got you covered. The country diva sifts through a songwriting minefield of good ol’-fashioned country woe, worship and wine-drinking for Love Somebody, the icon’s first album in five years. And queens, brace yourselves: the rockinfused “Going Out Like That” is more fierce than an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Taking aim at a mystified man,
theguymag

Reba lets him know what’s up… and it’s not what he expects. “He thought she’d be sitting home crying / she ain’t going out like that,” vows Reba, being all badass. The country queen’s emotional plate is full on Love Somebody, as she takes on impulsive rebound sex (the devastating Brandy Clark-written “She Got Drunk Last Night”), beating the odds (the sniffle-inducing “Love Land”) and mortality (“Just Like Them Horses”). Inspired to record the ballad after it was played at her father’s funeral, the latter is a hug from the heavens, and Reba sounds absolutely divine. She brings it on “Enough” as well. A duet with Jennifer Nettles, the powerhouse twosome touch the sky as they exchange lines about a two-timin’, no-good cheat. Elsewhere, she’s pledging her staying power (the growler “Livin’ Ain’t Killed Me Yet”), or re-envisioning “We Are the World” as “Pray for Peace,” a rally call buoyed by an inspiring Celtic lift. Certainly Reba’s genre-jumping is targeting anyone who’s ever heard a Reba song, and why shouldn’t it? For the most part, the more Rebas, the better. Grade: B

R&B. True Romance, though, won’t do much to put her back on top. With a twinkly string intro, “Conqueror” takes off at the chorus, soaring to anthemic heights with its sky-shattering sound. It’s listenable but derivative, a recurrent issue on True Romance. Take the ’90s house-influenced “Something Good / Devotion,” during which Estelle turns up the disco heat (think Crystal Waters). The track is fine. It’s filled with nostalgia. It’s also only temporarily intoxicating. On the whole, the album suffers the same sorry fate.
Kendrick Lamar, To Pimp a Butterfly Kendrick Lamar’s bringing the funk… and the spoken word, and the hip-hop, and the jazz. On To Pimp a Butterfly, the Caliborn hotshot pulls from his multifaceted influences as he grapples with heavy of-the-zeitgeist matters, particularly heightened violence against blacks. “King Kunta” grooves a wonky femaleassisted sound, and hope appears in the form of “Mortal Men,” a moving 12-minute, posthumous conversation with Tupac. This is a powerful and empowering opus. An urban gospel, even. It’s uncomfortable and challenging and, like the words from Lamar’s mouth to our ears, tremendously important. Where To Go, What To See On Hawaii’s Garden Island Of Kauai
N
obody on Kauai will give you a hard time for simply lazing on one of the island’s gorgeous beaches every waking hour of your vacation. Still, you may find it impossible to resist the countless opportunities for outdoor adventure on this lush, mountainous and least populated of Hawaii’s four major islands. Whether you venture out sea-kayaking, helicopter-touring, ziplining, hiking, or canyoneering, you won’t likely regret packing an activity or two into each of your days on what’s typically nicknamed the “Garden Island.” For the ultimate hiking and beachcombing, many visitors to Kauai (gohawaii.com/en/ Kauai) head for the Nā Pali Coast, which is on the northwestern tip of the island, just beyond the picturesque village of Hanalei (the setting for such films as South Pacific and Indiana Jones). The eastern side of Kauai is dominated by the waterfalls of the Wailua River Valley, the southern end by Poipu’s breathtaking beaches and upscale resorts, and the western side by gargantuan Waimea Canyon – there’s unparalleled beauty wherever you look. Touring Kauai by helicopter affords visitors one of the most memorable opportunities to see the entire island, and especially the remote and formidable Nā Pali Coast. Several companies offer these tours. Island Helicopters (islandhelicopters.com; 800-829-5999) is especially fun because they offer an 85-minute island excursion that includes stopping and walking around the base of 400-foot Manawaiopuna Falls, which appeared prominently in the opening scenes of Jurassic Park. This extremely informative, mesmerizing tour then circles the entire island, its capable pilots zipping in and out of tight valleys and even, weather permitting, the crater of extinct Kawaikini Peak, the island’s highest point.

Another exhilarating way to view part of the island is by striking out for an afternoon of high-wire action with Koloa Zipline (koloazipline.com; 877-707-7088), which operates an eight-line course in the verdant mountains near Poipu resort. You can opt for a classic or “Flying Kauaian” style harness (the latter is plenty more fun and well worth the $20 surcharge). As you sail above the treetops on some of the longest zip lines in Kauai (one stretches for a full half-mile), you’ll be treated to plenty of thrills. If you’re in good shape and game for an independent adventure, you can always hike into the Nā Pali highlands via the famed 11-mile Kalalau Trail. To hike the entire trail, which is steep and rugged in places, you must obtain a permit and camp overnight, as it’s not possible to cover the entire trail in a day. However, day hikers can easily venture in the first couple of miles to Hanakapiai Beach. And without a permit, you can also climb up to Hanakapiai Falls, or continue for another few miles to Hanakoa campground. Less demanding options for sightseeing include driving to the viewpoints at Waimea Canyon State Park – they don’t call this the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” without good reason. The 10-mile-long canyon is 3,000 feet deep and is one of Hawaii’s best photo ops. If you have a few hours, drive all the way to visitor center at Waimea Canyon’s Kokee State Park to pick up a trail map, and then embark on the stunning hike along the Canyon Trail to Waipoo Falls, which affords visitors an incredible perspective on the canyon. You’ll find beautiful beaches all around the island, some of them drawing heavily among Kauai’s many LGBT residents and visitors. The easiest to reach is Lydgate State Park, just south of Kapaa off the Kuhio Highway – walk south from the parking area for the gay-popular section. Donkey Beach, off Kuhio Highway a bit north of Kapaa, is enjoyable both for sunbaththeguymag

ing or swimming, and it draws a mix of gays and straights. Just keep in mind that the surf can be intense, so exercise caution. You’ll see the parked cars on the side of the road as you head north out of Kapaa, between mileposts 11 and 12 – from here just follow the trail down to the water. Nudity is permitted at this beach as well as at 3,000-foot Secret Beach (aka Kauapea Beach), another favorite of LGBT folks that’s up north near Kilauea Lighthouse (it’s a bit hard to find, however, so ask locals for directions). In recent years, quite a few sophisticated, urbane restaurants have opened on the island, making it a genuine favorite among foodies. One of the best is Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Kauai Grill (kauaigrill.com; 808.826.2250), the refined restaurant inside the stunning St. Regis Princeville resort. If you dine here, consider visiting the terrace bar just off the lobby before your meal; this open-air perch is the place to watch the sun fall over Hanalei Bay. With friendly, solicitous service and superb food – hamachi sashimi with shiitakes and a yuzu-soy glaze, roasted Kona lobster with glazed chestnuts and pepper butter – it’s the ideal special-occasion dining destination. Another exceptional choice for a superb, exquisitely prepared locavore-driven cuisine is RumFire Poipu Beach (sheraton-kauai.com/ dining/rumfire; 808) 742-1661), which enjoys a dazzling setting on a promontory overlooking the sea at the Sheraton Kauai – try the fried Brussels sprouts with Portuguese sausage and spiced macadamia nuts, or local butterfish with a plankgrilled salmon with purple potatoes and cherrytomato jam. This romantic restaurant is also well-regarded for its extensive cocktail menu and well-chosen wine list. Other Poipu culinary highlights include the Kauai outposts of two restaurant brands that have become legendary in Hawaii: Merriman’s Fish House (merrimanshawaii.com; 808-742-8385), which serves farm-fresh, healthful regional cuisine, and Eating House 1849 (eatinghouse1849.com; 808-742-5000), the terrific plantation-inspired restaurant operated by renowned Hawaiian chef Roy Yamaguchi. Up north, charmingly laid-back Hanalei is home to the Hanalei Taro & Juice Co. (hanaleitaro.com; 808-826-1059), a humble food truck (with a covered seating area) in the center of town that serves delicious and authentic Hawaiian specialties, such as Kalua pork tacos and laulau chicken, plus luscious and healthy taro-based fruit smoothies. Hanalei Coffee Roasters (hanaleicofshare with us on guymag.net
feeandteacompany.com; 808-826-6717) serves some of the best java on the island. And hip and sophisticated Bar Acuda (restaurantbaracuda. com; 808-826-7081) turns out delicious Mediterranean fare – it’s owned by talented chef Jim Moffat, who ran some of San Francisco’s hottest eateries in the ‘90s before moving to Hawaii. House-cured chorizo, roasted squid with chili oil and fresh lemon, and seared local ono fish with shaved fennel and a blood-orange reduction are among the delicacies here. Kauai has no shortage spots specializing in tasty short-order fare and tempting snacks, including Papalani Gelato (papalanigelato.comTimes in Poipu, and Jo Jo’s Anuenue Shave Ice & Treats (808-431-4840) in Waimea. Just north of Poipu, the Koloa Fish Market (808-742-6199) prepares super-fresh plate lunches and bento boxes to go (try the ahi poke bento) – they’re perfect for a picnic. In Lihue, dive-y Hamura’s Saimin (808245-3271) is worth stopping by to sample hearty renditions of ramen-like saimin, a beloved traditional Hawaiian dish. Don’t pass up the lilikoi (passion fruit) chiffon pie for dessert. If you’re driving through Kapaa, stop for a meal at Art Café Hemingway (artcafehemingway. com; 808-822-2250), which is run by a charming Eastern European couple, features beautiful artwork, and serves high-quality coffees and deftly prepared breakfast, lunch and dinner fare. Cozy and bustling Verde (verdehawaii.com; 808-8211400) is a fun little Mexican restaurant in Kapaa, serving tasty blackened-mahimahi tacos and garlic-shrimp tacos. Kauai has few nightspots, but just about anywhere on the island you’ll be greeted warmly – and there’s pretty good chance of bumping into “family” at most places. One spot that many LGBT folks frequent, especially during the “gay nights” held the first Saturday of each month, is Nawiliwili Tavern (808-245-1781), near the Kauai Marriott. Also in Lihue, in a shopping center with the island’s only bowling alley, Rob’s Good Times Grill (kauaisportsbarandgrill.com; 808-246-0311) is Kauai’s favorite sports bar – it’s not exactly a gay hotspot, but it is friendly and fun. Kauai has a nice range of accommodations in all prices ranges, from posh resorts to gay-friendly B&Bs. Poipu, on the south shore, has the greatest concentration of distinguished lodgings, including the aforementioned Sheraton Kauai Resort (sheraton-kauai.com; 808-742-1661), which hugs a spectacular point on the ocean, and has a great pool where you can also rent private bunga-

lows for the day, a stunning beach that’s famed for snorkeling, and the outstanding restaurant RumFire. The Sheraton’s prime setting has also made it a favorite resort for gay weddings. The Grand Hyatt Kauai (kauai.hyatt.com; (808-742-1234) ranks among Kauai’s most sumptuous full-service resorts - rooms have smart, contemporary furnishings and such cushy amenities as iHome stereos and beverage chillers. The Hyatt is also home to the superb Anara Spa – set amid lush gardens and waterfalls – as well as a top-notch golf course and several excellent restaurants. If you wish to be close to Waimea Canyon, consider the charming and historic Waimea Plantation Cottages (coasthotels.com; 808-338-1625), whose 61 private bungalows were built in the early 1900s for workers of a local sugarcane mill. They’re situated around relaxing, tree-shaded grounds that fringe the ocean. It’s a great option if you’re seeking a laid-back, old-school Hawaii experience, but with comfy accommodations that include wellequipped kitchens, private lanais, and vintage plantation-style furnishings. Also impressive and with a central location near the airport, the Kauai Marriott Resort (marriott.com; 808-245-5050) has the largest pool in the state and spreads across 800 handsomely landscaped acres and a fabulous beachfront. It’s a favorite option of LGBT families, given all the kidfriendly resort activities and amenities. Up the coast toward the north shore, lushly

and secluded Mahina Kai B&B (mahinakai. com; 808-822-9451) is a lovely getaway and the island’s only gay-exclusive lodging. The five rooms are beautifully – and distinctly – furnished, and the surrounding Japanese-inspired gardens and lagoon pool are the perfect places to relax and de-stress. There’s a fine, uncrowded beach within walking distance. And finally, on the north shore and with unparalleled views of Hanalei and the Nā Pali coast, the ultra-swanky St. Regis Princeville (stregisprinceville.com; 808-826-9644) enjoys one of the most majestic locations in Hawaii. You enter this gorgeous property through a topfloor lobby – it’s situated high on a bluff over the ocean – where you’ll also find the inviting Halelea Spa and access to celebrated Kauai Grill and St. Regis Bar. Cushy rooms with panoramic views seemingly tumble down a hillside to the beachfront, where you can tan your hide around a large pool and open-air restaurant, or saunter out onto the beach. The surrounding Princeville resort is also home to the world-class Makai Golf Club, a number of condominium rentals, and another terrific lodging option, the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas (westinprinceville.com; 808-827-8700). The Red Cow: Barbeque Heaven H
by Tim
arT
Be Nice!!! EAT MEAT!!! These are just a few of the Red Cow’s nifty sayings. I learned about this restaurant from another restaurant owner. He asked me if I liked barbeque. I happen to love barbeque, but it needs to be good. He suggested I check out the Red Cow. My first trip, just like my latest, was excellent. The restaurant is located right on the curve where Federal Highway turns into Sunrise. There is plenty of parking. It is a little tricky coming from the west. I usually go up and U-turn after going north on Federal for a bit. The dress is extremely casual. No need to dress up. Come as you are. Upon arriving we were greeted by a hostess and seated. I chose a high top to sit at. There is plenty of seating available - high tops, traditional tables and a very nice bar. Our server, Ricky, was very attentive during our entire dinner. The restaurant has 3 large screen TV’s in the main dining area with a number of other TV’s scattered throughout. I had been working all day and was interested in watching a certain sporting event. After asking if they would accommodate my request, the event was on the main screen before I knew it! Friday’s and Saturday’s are Prime Rib night – and, as luck would have it, I was there on a Saturday. After taking our drink order (plenty of beer on tap and wine to choose from), Ricky methodically went through the specials for the evening. Even though I knew I was share with us on guymag.net
getting the prime rib, I enjoyed listening to him. I ordered the Creole BBQ Rock Shrimp ($12) appetizer and an order of the Iron Skillet Corn Bread ($9). There are plenty of other items on the “settle in” portion of the menu such as Chili Dusted Pork Rinds ($8), Daily Smoked Fish Dip ($13), and Fritto Chili Pie ($9). The items I ordered were very tasty and the shrimp comes with two pieces of bread and the order is large enough for two. Next up was the main course. I ordered the Prime Rib ($24). It was great. It comes with a side (I got the beans). The order was so large I took ½ of my order home and had it again Sunday, and it was really good the second time around. I think that is the sign of a good meal. The “big decisions” section of the menu has all of the traditional barbeque fair (various ribs, chicken and shepherd’s pie – all between $20 and $23). To finish up, there are a variety of tasty desserts to choose from. While I did not have one on this trip, I have had them on earlier visits and they were great. Ice cream was involved!!!The Red Cow is right across the street from the Gateway Theater and would make for a great start to a movie night. I recommend you give the Red Cow a try! Shore’s career was catapulted by his surfer vernacular, “weasel”-esque behavior, and classic catchphrase “Hey, BU-DDY.” A film career in the 1990s included mini-masterpieces In the Army Now, Jury Duty, and the environmentally-conscious Bio-Dome. Although his recent self-titled TV show didn’t live up to expectations, Shore is back at his first love—stand-up. 8:00 p.m. Fort Lauderdale Improv. 5700 Seminole Way. Hollywood. 33314..
Roberta Flack Roberta Flack’s 1973 song “Killing Me Softly with His Song” has remained popular for over forty years thanks to variations to the song, like the Fugees’ 1996 cover. Flack won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year for that song; the year before she had won for “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” The smooth, sultry singer-pianist scored hits with other classic songs involving romance, including “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” “Where is the Love,” and “The Closer I Get to You.” 8:00 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312. theguymag

Kathy Griffin LGBT activist Kathy Griffin is known for her abrasive, no-holds-barred attacks on both celebrity culture and conservative politics. Whether fighting with the entire Palin family or trading barbs with Anderson Cooper on New Year’s Eve, Griffin finds ways to not only make headlines, but also make people laugh uncontrollably. Her popularity stemmed from story-filled stand-up specials on Bravo combined with her reality program My Life on the D-List in the first decade of the century. From there she became an empire, respected by the entire entertainment industry. Expect insider gossip from her highly publicized, short-lived stint on Fashion Police as Griffin takes the stage at the Broward Center. 8:00 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW Fifth Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.
Steve Aoki EDM hero Steve Aoki will take a break from his heavy summer music festival schedule to perform at Passion Nightclub. Carlos Mencia Honduran-born comedian Carlos Mencia tackles topics as diverse as everyday hypocrisies, absurdities, ethnic stereotypes, race relations, immigration, war, patriotism, capitalism, pop culture, current events, and family. Carlos is best known for his wellreceived Comedy Central show, Mind of Mencia. It taught us black people can’t swim”), Mencia has maintained a successful career as a comedian over the past decade, which continues tonight at the Improv. 8:00 p.m. Palm Beach Improv. 550 S. hen you watch Ex Machina (A24/Universal), the directorial debut by novelist/screenwriter Alex Garland (The Beach), you might find yourself wondering if it was his intention that this movie be as imperfect as the tech it’s trumpeting. But don’t wonder about that for too long. Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), a semi-socially awkward computer/tech nerd (No kidding! See also: Silicon Valley) is employed by Bluebook, founded by enigmatic and equally socially awkward computer/tech gazillionaire Nathan (a thoroughly miscast Oscar Isaac). Led to believe he has won an employee lottery that earns him a week at Nathan’s estate to meet with his reclusive boss, Caleb is brought by helicopter to his employer’s island, but has to walk a few miles on his own before he reaches the property. As it turns out, Nathan’s high-tech mountainside fortress isn’t just his home; it’s also a research facility. Before they get down to the nitty-gritty of the visit, Caleb hesitantly signs a non-disclosure agreement (shades of 50 Shades), entitling him to take part (read: be the human component) in a Turing test, alongside Nathan’s AI (artificial intelligence) creation Ava (Alicia Vikander). Over the course of seven sessions, Caleb and Ava are observed by Nathan. Following each session, Caleb meets with Nathan, usually over a meal, where Nathan gets blind drunk and then loses consciousness. Nathan’s a real Pearl Mesta (or should that be Pearl Messed-up?). Naturally (or is it artificially?), Caleb develops feelings for the attractive Ava, and believes that his attraction is reciprocated. During power cuts, when Caleb thinks he and Ava aren’t being observed by Nathan’s CCTV cameras, he naively hatches an escape plan for himself and Ava. But, predictably, puppetmaster Nathan is pulling strings and pushing buttons all along. Don’t worry, he’s going

to get his comeuppance (see Westworld). Ex Machina feels like a lot of wasted potential. Some of the special effects are special, while others are all too familiar. Fanboys and fangirls alike may lap this up like artificial sweetener, but those looking for something real will have to look elsewhere. [Ex Machina opens in area theaters on April 24.] It’s not surprising that Mark Landis, “one of the most prolific art forgers in U.S. history,” and the subject of the riveting doc Art and Craft (Oscilloscope) would also be a font of recycled and timeworn clichés (such as “nothing’s original under the sun”). After all, if he can’t paint or draw something original, why should he be capable of coming up with anything original to say? An autistic savant of the highest order, Landis is celebrated and derided in equal measure in Sam Cullman and Jennifer Grausman’s film. Art and Craft is as much a detective story as it is a portrait of an artist. Landis, who considered himself a philanthropist, was “not in it for the money,” and donated his forged artworks to unsuspecting museum curators, churches and the like. But Landis probably never anticipated crossing paths with Matthew Leininger, a registrar at an art museum in Oklahoma, who once he uncovered his scam, followed (read: became obsessed with) Landis for a number of years. When all was said and done, Leininger could link more than 100 Landis pieces to 46 museums in 20 states. theguymag
guymagtube
In and out of psychiatric hospitals from the time he was a teenager and on a regimen of various maintenance pharmaceuticals, Landis remained unstoppable. Art and Craft provides an intimate look at his artistic process and techniques (including unfortunate shopping sprees at the hateful Hobby Lobby), countered with Leininger’s pursuit. Events take an unexpected turn when Aaron Cowan, program director at University of Cincinnati’s DAAP Galleries gets the idea to create an exhibition around Landis and his forgeries. DVD special features include audio commentary by the directors, deleted scenes and much more. Mitra Farahani’s doc Fifi Howls From Happiness (Music Box Films) is a respectful portrait of “historic figure” Bahman Mohassess, a homosexual painter and sculptor known as the “Persian Picasso.” Divided into four chapters, the film features narration by Farahani in which she talks about how “the history in which Mohassess believed he played a major part swallowed him whole and no one was able to find him afterwards.” The last time Mohassess was seen in Tehran, he destroyed his entire body of work and left. No one knew his whereabouts; he disappeared without a trace. Farahani won’t say how she found Mohassess at the Hotel Sacconi in Rome, just how she penetrated his room in July 2010, shortly before he “became unreachable.” Farahani succeeds in getting Mohassess, a control freak (he constantly makes sugshare with us on guymag.net
gestions about how he would like things to appear in the doc) and heavy smoker (he’s rarely seen without a cigarette and his cough reverberates), to tell his own story, including details of his birth (1931 in Rasht near the Caspian sea), his education (Tehran’s Academy of Fine Arts), his influences (revolutionary poet Nima Yushij), his political views (including the American coup) and the way politics found a place in his work (he “witnessed oil spills and horrible people” and “democracy and dictatorships are the same” to him). Mohassess also speaks openly about his homosexuality; how he preferred “the forbidden character of homosexuality” to the openness of today. According to Mohassess, “the beauty was in the prohibition.” Appalled by the concept of gay marriage, he tells Farahani that all of his male lovers were engaged to women. Even in declining health, Mohassess remains feisty, especially when dealing with potential commissions of his work. When he finally meets a pair of artist brothers (whom Mohassess describes as “cool, not stiff and stuffy”) willing to pay for a commission, as well as purchase the remaining works of art that Mohassess himself hasn’t destroyed, the film takes a lighthearted turn. But, as you might expect, the joy is short-lived. In Farsi with English subtitles. Ahmad Farough’s 1967 doc about Mohassess, The Eye That Hears, is the DVD’s only bonus feature.

FITNESS
Sharpen Your Focus by Tom
bonanTi
Whether you are a gym neophyte or a workout fanatic with years of gym time under your belt, it’s good every now and then to shift your focus. The fitness lifestyle is about more than just bulging biceps and buns of steel. There are other muscles, bodily systems and components of your life that require time, attention and some loving care. Because everyone deserves a healthy, prosperous life, let me suggest that you sharpen your focus and consider a few of my favorite pieces of health advice to my clients! Drink more water. Water is the most vital nutrient required by every bodily system. According to most authorities on nutrition and sports performance, a gallon of water on training days and half a gallon on off days is a great place to start. If you are thirsty, or if your urine is even slightly yellow, then you are already dehydrated. Consider supplementation. Okay, so you cut out junk food and try to eat healthy, smaller meals four or five times a day. You shop at Whole Foods or Fresh Market for the cleanest, most nutrient dense foods you can find. The truth is that no matter how hard you try, there are other outside factors that affect your nutritional plan. Soil depletion, hidden additives or chemicals, etc. can all be found in, or affect even the freshest, most organically grown meats and produce. Age, stress, vitamin deficiencies and other factors take their toll on your body no matter how clean you eat. Are fish oil, a multi-vitamin, a B complex good for you? Probably, yes. Check with your doctor first, and then get started with a good program of supplementation. You’ll see and feel the difference. Take time to nourish your spiritual side. Re-

alize that you are more than just a hunky set of biceps or a workhorse in the work place. You are also a human being with a mind, sensitivity and a spiritual side that needs nourishment. Find a quiet place at home or at work, shut the door, get comfortable, close your eyes and focus on your breathing for at least a few moments on a daily basis. Nourish your psyche by listening to quiet, soothing music as you drive. Turn off the TV, computer and personal devices. Light some candles, take a relaxing bath or shower, read a good novel. In short, shut out the tumult, noise and conflict of the exterior world and find a peaceful haven inside yourself. Take an animal into your life. No, not a new boyfriend. A pet. Studies have shown that owning a pet can benefit your health in countless ways, from enhancing your mood to lowering your blood pressure. Dog and cat owners have been found to suffer less from heart attacks and strokes. If dogs or cats are not your thing, then get a fish; your companion does not have to be warm or fuzzy to bolster your health! Make more friends. If negative people are draining your life or sapping your strength, then ask yourself two things. First, am I one of these people, too? Second, what can I do to change myself into a font of positive energy? The answer to both questions is the same. Seek out positive, active, dynamic and joyful people. Avoid adversarial, negative and unhappy individuals. Positive, good energy is contagious. You deserve to be content, peaceful and happy. Want some help to sharpen your focus in your workouts?
