NON-PROFIT PROFILE

How Switchboard Miami Has Grown Into Vital Life Support For Thousands BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

It’s hard to find help in a state of despair but rest assured that assistance is just around the corner, all you need to do is dial 211. Switchboard of Miami provides counseling and countless referrals to anyone who needs immediate support. “You can find help here regardless of your gender or age,” said Kristyn Greco-Seyfi, manager of strategic marketing and communications for Switchboard. “Any demographic, we’ll be here for you.” What was once a small group of college students and volunteers answering phones in 1968 has grown into an efficient social services counseling and referral contact center. The transformation occurred as students in need of temporary housing started to explain the various reasons behind their housing needs. By 1971, Switchboard became a nonprofit relying on grants and fundraisers to extensively increase their resources to provide free, low-cost support, whether it be referrals in housing, therapy, rehabilitation and counseling. In 1977, under the leadership of former Executive Director Shirley Aron, the organization’s services outgrew the one room space they had occupied up to that point and with the grants from United Way Foundation’s

8

local Miami chapter, they were able to move into a larger office building. “Aron really helped broker the partnerships for referrals and funds,” Greco-Seyfi said. The organization established a LGBTQ Helpline in 2004 when board member Ed Straub Jr. championed its creation after three of his closest friends all took their own lives. Members of the gay community can dial 211 directly, 24/7, or phone (305) 646-3600 to receive real-time counseling. In July of last year, Switchboard merged with Family Counseling Services of Greater Miami. Members of the LGBTQ community can visit the Switchboard Family Counseling Services building (7412 Sunset Dr. Miami FL 33143; 305-740-8998) in Kendall to receive individual, group and family counseling. Switchboard is always ready to help. For more information and ways to get in touch with a representative, visit their website at Switchboardmiami.org. Switchboard serves Miami-Dade County, Collier County and Monroe County (Key West). Switchboard doesn’t operate in Broward County but callers inside the county who dial 211 will be connected to unaffiliated critical support helpline.

An Easy Way To Keep You And Your Dog Happy: Mobile Grooming BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

It’s unsettling every time you take your dog to the groomers because you know that they’ll be stuck in a lonesome cage waiting in queue to be primed and prepped only to be returned back to that dreadful cage until you come to their rescue. Wouldn’t it be nice to avoid such distress for you and your dog? Well, thanks to Stacey Kluberdanz and her mobile dog grooming service, You Dirty Dog, that ghastly feeling will evaporate once you realize your pet will receive preferential treatment where and when you like. In 2002, after 20 years in Corporate America, Kluberdanz wanted to get away from the hustle and grind so she put the wheels in motion to start her own business. She always wanted to be a veterinarian but didn’t want to devote the time to going back to school for a

18

long time. Then one day as she was driving, she caught a glimpse of a dog-grooming van and a lightbulb went off in her head. Kluberdanz took her new career seriously and enrolled in the New York School of Dog Grooming, one of the country’s leading doggrooming schools. Kluberdanz and her daughter Lindsey groom dogs throughout Broward County seven days a week. Every dog is individually cared for at the time of service with a full grooming that includes nail clipping, gland expression, teeth cleaning and a wash and cut. They offer a variety of all natural products and oatmeal shampoos. Owners of dogs with special needs or allergies are welcome. There is no restriction on the type of dog or those weighing less than 125 pounds. Pricing starts at $60 for dogs the theguymag

theguymag

size of a Yorkshire Terrier. Reservations should be made a week to two in advance: however, they do accept last-minute appointments depending on availability. Owners preferring to have recurrring appointments, should come up with a fixed schedule they can honor. “Then, you get preference as a regular customer,” said Kluberdanz. “I can schedule grooming for a whole year and reschedule a day and time if your recurring appointment doesn’t work for you that week.” As an added bonus, Kluberdanz gives back to the LGBT community by volunteering at different nonprofits and donating doggrooming gift certificates to silent-auction fundraisers. To make an appointment call You Dirty Dog at 954654-1107 or email them at yddgro@yddgroomer.com. guymagtube

Sidelines Bar Celebrates Nine Years As Wilton Manors’ Premier Sports Hub BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

“Wow, I still can’t believe we’ve been around for nine years,” said Laurie Whittaker, owner of Sidelines Sports and Video Bar. Whittaker has provided a special niche for the gay community in Wilton Manors. Before she opened her sports bar on May 12, 2006, there was nowhere in town that the community could come to kick back, sip a cold one and enjoy some sports with likeminded fans. Being a sports fanatic herself, Whittaker knew a place was needed where gay men and lesbians could watch sports together in a safe and comfortable environment. So Whittaker jumped at the chance when the old Circuit Bar went up for sale in the strip mall at the southern tip of Wilton Drive. “It took us just three weeks to transform the old bar, Circuit, into Sidelines Sports Bar,” said Whittaker. Sidelines is currently the sports hub of Wilton Manors. Each and every day, they cover all the bases with some kind of sporting event on one of 22 38

flat screen TVs. For example, during baseball season, a subscription to Major League Baseball’s Extra Innings enables patrons to watch MLB games from all over the country. And of course for football, they go all out with subscriptions to ESPN’s Game Plan, the Big Ten Network, the SEC Network and NFL Sunday Ticket so customers can enjoy a full range of college games while staying on top of which pro teams will advance to the Super Bowl. But the menu is not limited to just baseball and football of course. Fans regularly wear team jerseys with friends for the annual March Madness of college basketball and the intense rivalries of the World Cup. Many go all out with displays of American patriotism during the Summer and Winter Olympics. In fact, this summer, Whittaker is expecting a great turnout for the women’s World Cup. Whittaker encourages everyone to root for their favorite teams but to leave their animosity at the door because Sidelines tries to keep it drama free. “Drama just spoils everyone’s time,” theguymag

guymagtube

said Whittaker. “We offer a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere which encourages people to create friendships and have camaraderie.” If you find yourself getting a little hot under the collar because your all-star team is just not hitting it out of the park, then walk it off and try your hand at jenga, pool or darts. In 2011, Whittaker turned the bar into a smoke-free establishment. However, smokers can still light up outside on the patio. In 2013, she modernized the look and feel of the bar with new high-tech equipment and a Most Valuable Player (MVP) section in the front where guests receive special treatment, such as bottle service and group catering. Whittaker feels it is important to give

back to the community. As a former member of the board for Pride South Florida and the Rainbow Business Coalition, she continues to give time and space to many charitable organizations needing help with events and fundraisers, including Florida AIDS Walk, the Smart Ride, Poverello, Broward House, the Soup Kitchen, Rainbow Survivors Network and Tuesday’s Angels. Wilton Manors has come a long way since Whittaker launched Sidelines. She remembers when Wilton Drive had less than a handful of bars, but now there are a number of them around town and she is elated to still be in the game. “I hope to continue to be a mainstay in Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale,” Whittaker said. “I want to remain strong for our community.” She attributes the success of Sidelines to her staff and the support from her life partner Jennifer Morales. During a six-day anniversary celebration starting May 12 at 8:00 pm, Sidelines will be offering drink specials, gift giveaways and prizes. And as always, there’s never a cover charge.” SIDELINES SPORTS & VIDEO BAR 2031-A WILTON DRIVE WILTON MANORS, FL 33305 (954) 563-8001

COVER STORY

Team Rumors Wins Dancing with the South Florida Stars BY

MICHAEL DAVIS

D

ancing With the South Florida Stars, Season Five, packed the Epic Theater at The Manor Entertainment Complex on Monday, April 20, in the latest turn of the much-anticipated annual fundraiser for the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation. The winning team representing Rumors Bar featured Luis Mendez and Mia Patricyk performing an intricate Cha-Cha to the song “Soul Makossa” by Manu Dibango. Mendez is well known on the Drive as a popular bartender at Rumors, while his partner Mia has created a local following as a performer aboard the monthly Tea Cruises benefiting the Brian Neal Fitness and Health Foundation. John Wittenborn of University Center for the Performing Arts (UPCA) choreographed the winning dance routine, which Mia says came together in the week preceding the show. The dance included a number of dramatic lifts and stretches including one that Mia calls the Dirty Dancing move, during which she was held aloft over Luis’ head. 44

“His strength is amazing,” Mia said. “He never dropped me once,” she laughed remembering the move. “I thought our performance was really bad-ass,” she said. The audience agreed, voting the winning team the first place position through applause. “We got together in a week and did something really good.” Mia is hoping that her win will serve as a platform to help her professional goal to get a position within a nonprofit organization like SunServe or Broward House helping transgender individuals. “I enjoy helping the community, and really intend to make a positive difference.” Hosted by the legendary female impersonators Kitty Meow and Elaine Lancaster, with Red Carpet introductions by Deja Devonier, the three-hour dancing competition featured the judging talents of Major League Baseball’s Ambassador for Inclusion Billy Bean, Hunter’s owner Mark Hunter, entertainer Joe Posa, and event promoter Gary Santis. Drag star Electra offered a touching portrait of the late Bruce Bogan, winner of the theguymag

first Dancing with the South Florida Stars Crystal Trophy. Comedian Barry Sobel lightened the mood with his brand of stand-up. Singer Debra Hampton wooed the crowd with a high-energy performance, followed by Tiffany Arieagus who performed before receiving the event’s Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Velvet Lenore. 501(c)(3) organization that provides a year-round health and wellness program for people challenged with living with HIV/AIDS and/or other life-threatening illnesses. The soldout event was once again produced by MMP Worldwide founder Bobby Blair, including the always-popular Silent Auction that preceded the 8 pm showtime. The Emboldened Girls A candid conversation with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin BY

CHRIS AZZOPARDI

Lily Tomlin is watching Jane Fonda weep. As the showbiz icon releases a steady stream of waterworks – she’s “wiping tears away,” Tomlin notes – Fonda pauses slightly to collect herself before answering. The question? Why gay men have forever revered older women even when the rest of the world – and Hollywood – have not. “I find the question so moving that it makes me cry,” says Fonda. It’s one revelatory moment among many during this candid conversation with the 77-year-old actress and Tomlin, 75, who appear together in the new Netflix original series Grace and Frankie. The beloved pair play two golden girls forced to start anew after their husbands drop a big truth bomb: They’re in love with each other. This isn’t the actresses’ first time working together, of course. In 1980, Tomlin and Fonda memorably joined forces with Dolly Parton to put misogynistic men in their place in Nine to Five. Decades later, the film is a feminist-celebrated comedy classic. Will Dolly make a cameo on Grace and Frankie? During our freewheeling interview, the two longtime friends talked about the possibility of a Nine to Five reunion on their new series, but they revealed plenty more too. Fonda opened up about her own experiences dating high-profile gay men,

50

one of whom proposed to her. Tomlin recalled the time she lashed out at Chita Rivera. But first, the crying.

You’ve both addressed aging in Hollywood, and this show deals a lot with aging as well. Historically, gay men – we love our Golden Girls, we already love Grace and Frankie, we love our Chers and Bette Midlers. Why do you think, despite Hollywood’s reputation for ageism, there has always been a place for older women in the gay community? Lily: I may be terribly wrong and cutting my tongue out for this: It’s like, well, we’re women of a certain age, and maybe we’re considered more audacious. Jane: I find the question so moving that it makes me cry. I had never thought of it before, and it makes me so moved. I think Lily put her finger on it just now. Older women tend to be more audacious; they’re bigger and bolder and, god knows, gay men love big and bold, right?

Does it go any deeper than that, do you think? Lily: It’s like (drag performer) Lypsinka. I knew he was from Mississippi, and he’s like a little kitten in a way; his hair is so soft and pale red, and he’s got a big, high, very white-skinned forehead. When I first saw Lypsinka, I could just see this little boy – theguymag

guymagtube

four or five years old in Mississippi – growing up around all these Southern women, and my family’s Southern too. I just saw him seeing through them and into their hearts. He saw the women being oppressed and being pigeonholed and how they act kind of audaciously just to free themselves. I just could see that little boy, and he satirized women’s behavior so brilliantly – all the stuff, the travails they have, and I just wept when I saw him because he was so brilliant. I think there are hinges between those two things. Jane is wiping tears from her eyes. Jane: How she said that – that he sees through them into their hearts. And also: The notion of surviving. Lily: And him making up this incredible creature who’s just so much fun to watch, and yet it’s painful. I could feel his little boy pain all through those years.

You both have had a profound influence on the LGBT and ally movements. Can you share a moment in your lives as LGBT activists and trailblazers that stand out as particularly memorable to you? Jane: Campaigning with Harvey Milk in the Castro District in San Francisco for Prop 6. He was the most joyous. He was like Allen Ginsberg. He was always smiling and laughing, and he was beloved and he was funny. The most lovable person. I was so happy when I was with him. And it was just so much fun going into those gay bars with him – oh my god! Lily: I never got to meet Harvey Milk. I knew (LGBT activist and historian) Vito Russo; he was my good friend. I used to exchange so many stories with him. I was up on the Strip one night when I was not on Laugh-In yet. I was unknown and a woman that I was friends with who was a publicist had brought Chita Rivera to meet me, and Chita talked with a Bronx accent, and she’s talking really fast and you don’t know what she’s saying. I kind of zoned out for a minute because I could hardly understand her at that point, and then I suddenly heard her say, “purse nelly.” First she had said my “boy dancers” and the skin on the back of my neck bristled up, and that’s when she said “purse nelly” and then I just went ballistic. I said, “What did you say?!”

You lashed out at Chita Rivera? Lily: I lashed out. She said, “I dunno! WHADISAY?” I said, “You said, ‘purse nelly.’ I wanna know what that means. What you meant by that!” “I don’t know. Whadisay? Pursenelly? Personally.” She was saying “personally”! Jane: “Personally!” (Laughs) share with us on guymag.net

Lily: And I didn’t even cop to it. I was so embarrassed. I just doubled over laughing and fell on the floor. Jane: I just went to my 60th high school reunion. I went four years to an all-girls boarding school, and in the days leading up to the reunion I kept wondering, “God, I wonder whatever happened to Pat Johnson?” Because everyone in the class knew that Patty Johnson was gay, or at least we thought that she was. But no one talked about it. Not even among ourselves. Nobody ever said anything. And she was at the reunion – there were only four of us at the reunion. Lily: Four out of the whole class?! Awww. Jane: And Pat Johnson was there, with an oxygen tank, mind you. It was the first time she’d been out to dinner in five years because she had some allergies to chemicals. And there she was with her wife! An amazing woman violinist! And I thought, well, this is very great. I never ever would have imagined back in the day that Pat Johnson would be able to get married to her lady friend.

Let’s talk about your friendship with each other. Was it smooth sailing from the very beginning? Lily: Yeah, we hit it off right away. I was so excited when Jane came to see one of my shows way back in the day Jane: This was pre-Nine to Five! Lily: Yeah. I was all excited. She came backstage and was very complimentary, and then next thing I knew… Jane: I was offering her a role in Nine to Five, which was originally going to be a serious movie until I saw Lily’s one-woman show called Appearing Nightly. I decided I didn’t want to make a movie about office workers until she was one of them. And it had to be a comedy. It took me a year to convince her and Dolly to be in it! During that year we kind of saw each other because we’d be talking about different ideas and stuff, and so we kind of became friends before Nine to Five.

What is different about working with each other on Grace and Frankie compared to when you worked together on Nine to Five 35 years ago? Jane: We’re together more! I mean, it’s four months, almost every day for almost 15 hours, which is a real treat for me. You know, Lily is very unusual. She has a real funny bone. So, watching her take on not just the scripts but life is a pleasure. Lily: Thank you, Ms. Fonda!

After doing the first season of Grace theguymag

and Frankie, what advice do you have for women who are romantically involved with a gay man? Jane: Try to stay friends. You know, it happened to a friend of mine when I lived in Atlanta, and she told me about it and it was very hard for her because she really loved him a lot. Because she loved him, she was able to understand that he needed to become who he really was, and they remained very, very close friends and they still live in the same building. I think that’s the way to do it. Compassion, empathy, love, understanding – we need more of it.

Have either of you dated a gay man before? Jane: Oh yes! Oh my god. When I was young, I was the female that gay guys wanted to try to become heterosexual with. A very famous actor who’s gay – and I will not name names – asked me to marry him. I was very flattered, but I said, “Why?” This was 1964. And I mean, he wasn’t the only one. It’s very interesting. And I lived for two years with a guy who was trying to become heterosexual. I’m intimately acquainted with that.

Did that come to mind as you were shooting this show, where you are married to a gay man? Jane: (Laughs) No! Not until you made me think of it right now.

Lily, have you had any similar experiences? Lily: No, I didn’t; but I had girlfriends who dated gay guys in college and they couldn’t understand why so-and-so didn’t, you know, take them into their arms and sweep them away. Because they danced together so well! They were beautiful, tall blonde people! They were just kind of breathtaking, and they did make a nice looking couple, but that was about as far as it would go – looks. I had a girlfriend and we got into a big fight about being gay when I first moved to New York. She was watching Lust for Life and Anthony Quinn, who is so macho as Gauguin in that movie, and I said something like, “Look how macho this guy is – he’s unbelievable!” She said, “If I were gay, I’d beat down the door of the nearest psychiatrist.” I said, “If I fell in love with my refrigerator, I’d give it lamb chops!”

Netflix has really been a pioneer in reaching beyond LGBT stereotypes and being LGBT inclusive, and it’s done it again with Grace and Frankie. How do you feel about the state of gay characters on TV as a whole? And what is it about this platform that allows Netflix to tell LGBT stories without getting gimmicky or exploitative?

52

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

Lily: I think it’s been a long time coming. Although, it’s happened because of so many things that have gone before, and this culture has changed. Large parts of the culture have changed. Not the culture as a whole. You know, there’s still a lot of – Jane: Homophobia. I lived in the South for 20 years, and, unfortunately, homophobia is all too alive and rampant, but because there are so many more gay men and women in mass media and they’re very lovable – and more and more people are coming out – Americans know somebody who’s gay and lesbian. Once that happens, it’s a lot harder to remain homophobic.

Did you ever think that gay marriage would be a reality in your lifetime? Lily: No, I did not. Jane: No, I didn’t either. Lily: I mean, I began to suspect. The last generation or two that have come along, they so demanded to be visible and they’ve taken for granted everything that the gay community had fought for so hard for a long time – it was wiped away from their minds that they were not accepted or not loved. I mean, they may have known it but they didn’t own it. Jane: I agree, and I’m very optimistic. I found what Justice Kennedy said – that it should be looked at as sex discrimination – cause for optimism.

I remember when this show was announced, everyone was really hyped about you two getting back together, but they were also hoping for a Dolly Parton cameo. Has that been discussed as a real possibility amongst showrunners? Lily: Well, it’s been discussed because so many people inquired about it and thought about it. Of course Dolly’s a good friend and the three of us really like each other and we’ve been friends all these years, but because Grace and Frankie is set apart, we want to establish our identity before we think about dragging the _Nine to Five_ life into it. Jane: It’s a different style. It’s a different animal. We wanna keep it that way. For now, anyway.

What do you think your Nine to Five characters, Judy and Violet, are up to these days? Jane: Violet’s probably heading up a Silicon Valley company! Maybe we’re married! BARTENDER OF THE WEEK

Ray Estrella: Balancing Bartending With Real Estate

BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

Ray Estrella is a smart strategic thinker who isn’t afraid to go after what he wants and who also excels at what he loves. And right now at the age of 39, he’s embracing his new profession with a determination he has always displayed. “I have a coffee mug at home that reads ‘failure is not an option’,” said Estrella, smiling. In 1997 at the ripe age of 21, Estrella was already the proud owner of a golf-course townhouse in Davie, Florida. That same year was also when he discovered a knack for bartending. It wasn’t necessarily a profession he pursued. He just so happened to have the right personality for it. How did it happen? He received an unexpected call one day while working as a food server at Palace on Ocean Drive in South Beach. It was the bar manager who caught wind of his ability to rope in customers and keep them coming back with his likability. It was a talent she knew would mesh well with bartending so she offered him a position. From that point on, Estrella became a promi-

nent fixture on the Miami scene as a floating bartender -- Palace, Nikki Beach, Mansion. The list goes on. “(Bartending) was an art that I created working at different places,” joked Estrella. “I would work the best nights at each location.” Miami Beach became such a big part of Estrella’s life that he sold his townhouse and purchased a condo on the Beach. He was committed to his craft and the art he developed, but not so much the profession. “I never could put my figure on want I really wanted to do,” Estrella said. “Bartending has enabled me to do everything I wanted to do in life.” Estrella always liked real estate and at 27, he started taking classes. But then the housing market started to decline so he put off getting his license. He eventually grew tired of the Miami Beach lifestyle. And when he turned 28, he sold his condo, bought a house in North Miami and went to work at a good friend’s new restaurant and piano bar on 79th street, theguymag

Ray Estrella’s Favorite Drink

This special drink is Ray Estrella’s favorite. “I’m a bourbon drinker and it just has all the right elements to put a smile on someone’s face.”

east of Biscayne Boulevard. “The owner, Jeffrey, and I had a instant connection,” Estrella recalled. “He became my friend and my mentor.” Magnum Restaurant and Lounge is a place where Estrella feels comfortable. He has cultivated long lasting friendships during the 12 years that he’s been there. But that didn’t stop him from pursuing his other interests. Despite obtaining his claims adjustor license and graduating from college with honors in liberal arts, he never lost his desire to get into real estate. “The personality traits that make for a great bartender are the same for a realtor,” said Estrella. “It’s the attention you provide and ability to please that produce a great end product.” This past August, Magnum was temporarily shutdown after new owners, Avra Jain and Joe Delvecchio, decided to renovate. So in the meantime, Estrella went to work temporarily for the same owners at the pool bar of their newly renovated Vagabond Hotel. After a month of helping the hotel relaunch, share with us on guymag.net

he realized it was time to dive into real estate, so he took some time off to finally get his real estate license. After three months, he received his license and started working at Keller Williams. That was November. In December, Estrella returned to the newly reopened Magnum with new manager Elizabeth Hagedorn-Vila, who he adores. “Referrals are important in real estate and Magnum is my familiar place to network,” he said. “The same crowd that has come in for years are all my friends. I’ve built trust with them and I love it there.” ESTRELLA PROPERTIES ESTRELLARAY@AOL.COM OFFICE: 305-757-1700 CELL: 305-968-2020 MAGNUM RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE 709 NE 79TH ST. RECREATION

Bounce Your Indoor Blues Away With Trampolining BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

The rainy season has arrived in Florida. It’s that time of year when the Sunshine State gets soaked and most people prefer to stay indoors catching up on their favorite movies and television shows. But instead of going the route of couch potato, there are more exciting ways to spend time indoors and get a little exercise in as well. One of those activities is trampolining, which provides some fun for kids and adults alike yet won’t necessarily bust the family budget. There are two mega trampoline facilities within 30 minutes of Wilton Manors. At both facilities, you can jump and bounce to your heart’s content. Try some impressive basketball moves and slam-dunks in spacious trampoline pits that come

58

equipped with their own basketball hoops. If trampolining isn’t your cup of tea, these facilities offer other things to do, from laser tag to rock-wall climbing. At Planet Air Park (1401 Green Road Deerfield Beach FL 33064; 954-428-3386), guests can enjoy safe paintball games that use soft foam instead of plastic filled paint balls as ammunition. Or test your strength with their eight different rockclimbing walls. Assess your balance and agility 15 feet in the air inside Florida’s only indoor zipline arena and obstacle course. It’s completely thrilling and challenging at the same time, forcing participants to maneuver through ropes, walk planks and shimmy through barrels suspended in the air. theguymag

theguymag

At Off the Wall (4939 Coconut Creek Parkway Coconut Creek FL 33063; 954-973-3031), patrons can compete in an intense, trampoline-based dodgeball game among friends. Embrace your inner secret agent as you bend and flip through a high-tech laser maze. Have fun as you burn 1000 calories an hour with a customized workout routine combining trampoline fitness with traditional aerobic exercises that can only be performed on a trampoline. In fact, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration claims that trampoline fitness is 68 percent more effective than jogging. Both trampoline parks have a café and host birthday parties and special events.

SCREEN SAVOR

Sink Or Swim

BY

GREGG SHAPIRO

T

here’s almost as much to admire about The D Train (IFC), co-written/ co-directed by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul, as there is to dislike. First, you have to give Mogel and Paul credit for attempting to breathe some new life into what has become the tired class reunion genre (see Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, Peggy Sue Got Married, Grosse Point Blank, 10 Years). Plus, their concept – a shlubby, forgettable and mostly disliked member of the class reunion committee promises to get a more desirable classmate to attend the big party – is an original take on a familiar theme. The aforementioned desirable classmate is Oliver Lawless (the always watchable James Marsden), renowned class stud who left Pittsburgh for Hollywood to make it as an actor. His biggest accomplishment to date is a commercial for Banana Boat sunscreen, an ad in regular rotation on TV. The shlub is nickname-

obsessed Dan (Jack Black), the D Train of the movie’s title. Dan’s biggest accomplishment is marrying high school sweetheart and popular girl Stacey (the always fantastic Kathryn Hahn), meaning that Dan could move up in the social strata. But that doesn’t make Dan, also the father of teen Zach (Russell Posner), a better person. He’s actually the opposite; a pathological liar whose tall tales get him into trouble at work with long-suffering boss Bill (Jeffrey Tambor), as well as at home and, of course, at the reunion. How much trouble? Dan arranges a fake business trip to L.A. to woo Oliver on the company dime but gets more than he bargained for when Bill accompanies him. He also gets the surprise of his life when he discovers that Oliver is comfortably bisexual and, after a drug-alcohol-fueled night on the town, Dan ends up in the sack with him. Dan eventually accomplishes his mission, but at a debilitating cost to himself, his family

and his place of employment. Black’s instantly recognizable shtick is at play here and, depending on how you feel about it, is either hilarious or tragic. Dan’s a part that could have been played by any number of equally annoying actors, including Seth Rogan and Jonah Hill, or even a younger Steve Carrell , for that matter. If not for Hahn and Marsden, who bring depth and real emotion to their respective characters, The D Train would have derailed a lot earlier. Whether you saw it in theaters when it first opened, watched it on cable on Turner Classic Movies or you’ve never seen it before, it’s well worth diving into the DVD/Blu-ray combo pack of The Swimmer (Grindhouse/ Columbia). Based on a short story by closeted gay writer John Cheever, directed by Frank Perry (the man behind the camp classic Mommie Dearest), with help from Sidney Pollack (Tootsie), featuring a dramatic and groovy score by Marvin Hamlisch and co-starring Joan Rivers in her first dramatic acting role, this 1968 film is one of the riskiest and most underrated movies of its time. Set in the swank New York suburbs (a turf Cheever knew well and wrote about with regularity), The Swimmer follows Ned (Burt Lancaster), the fit titular aquatic sports enthusiast, who plans to take a dip in the string of pools across the county that lead to his house. Sounds ambitious, right? Consider that the share with us on guymag.net

character is supposed to be in his early 50s, as was Lancaster at the time of the filming. Most of the other men his age that Ned encounters on his quest, comment on his exceptional physical condition because a majority of them have gone to seed on fattening foods and liquor. Lancaster, no stranger to parading his physique onscreen (see From Here to Eternity), spends almost the entire movie in a pair of form fitting blue trunks. The only time he’s not in them is when he pays a visit to the home of an eccentric, elderly nudist couple. In the early part of Ned’s journey, he is welcomed by his neighbors. As he progresses, however, he encounters fewer and fewer people who are happy to see him. His reputation as a “suburban stud” precedes him. The wives with whom he has carried on are less than thrilled to see him, as are their cuckolded husbands. Alternately sexy and surreal, The Swimmer is about as suggestive as you could get in 1968, a mere year before Midnight Cowboy forever changed the cinematic landscape. Lancaster and his impressive abs, biceps and package, make quite a splash, and gives what is easily one of the best performances of his career. In addition to digital restoration, DVD/Blu-ray special features include a recording of Cheever reading the original short story on which the film is based, filmmaker Allison Anders interviewing actress Marge Champion and much more. theguymag

RESORT

Pineapple Point: Fort Lauderdale’s Guesthouse Gold Standard

BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

Business and life partners Phil Quattrone and Judd Chapman have built a destination that stands out among Fort Lauderdale’s 578 hotels, obtaining a number one ranking from travel website Trip Advisor to prove it. Quattrone and Chapman constructed Pineapple Point 16 years ago as a retirement project with a purpose. The two, welltraveled gents continuously had difficultly finding a gay resort in the United States that was above par. So they decided to take matters into their own hands and create a superb, all-male luxury resort experience. “We have every amenity of a five-star hotel,” said Quattrone. When guests book their accommodations, they receive an abundance of first-class treatment. Concierge service before and during their entire stay. Turn-down service every night adorned with a customized, gold-wrapped milk chocolate pineapple esting on each pillow. Efficient room service at your fingertips. Courtesy baskets

of water, snacks, towels and sunscreen for trips to the beach. Complimentary bicycles are also available. Quattrone pointed out that “once you arrive, pretty much everything is complimentary.” The resort is an impeccably manicured tropical oasis with twists and turns that lead you from the front porch of bungalows to villas that open out onto sun decks and heated pools. Everywhere you turn, there are hammocks so guests can lounge under the natural shade of palm trees. You can find Chapman routinely sprucing up the property in his oversized wicker hat, tank top and jeans. “I grew up in Kentucky on a farm tending to plants and gardens all my life,” Chapman said. Quattrone and Chapman work hard to ensure that every guest has a pleasurable experience, especially those who stay in a suite or villa, such as the daddy-of-themall, three-story Grand Villa with its private pool, jacuzzi, BBQ grill and balcony. These theguymag

guests receive personalized laundry service and morning coffee served with a fresh rose and newspaper. But no matter how they stay, all guests can tan by the main pool with endless popsicles and snacks, enjoy a weekend BBQ every Saturday afternoon, mingle with other guests at happy hour or work out in their fullservice gym with an on-call trainer. The resort also offers two massage studios with an on-call licensed massage therapist. The resort does allow non-guests to purchase day passes. With so much available, there’s no reason to leave the resort. But if you do venture out, the guesthouse is centrally located with a less-than-10-minute drive to Fort Lauderdale Beach, downtown Las Olas and the famous Drive in Wilton Manors. DINING

Tijuana Taxi Co.: Where Fresh Food Meets Olé BY TIM

HART

I decided to try this restaurant out for “Dining Out with Broward House.” This is a charity exercise that is worth the effort. I was looking for a place on the west side of town and the Tijuana Taxi Co. was the only choice. Tijuana Taxi Co. serves delicious authentic Mexican food and the best margaritas this side of the border! Huge portions, patio seating, amazing cocktails and an unusually inviting atmosphere make The Taxi one of the hottest eateries in town! The restaurant has great locations conveniently located in Coral Springs and Davie—with Deerfield Beach is coming soon!!! The Davie location is situated just north of Griffin Road and University on the west side of the street. The layout is classic South Florida – patio seating surrounds a very spacious indoor seating section with a bar and ample seating (hi tops, traditional tables and booths). I arrived around 6:00pm and was greeted and seated by the hostess. Emma, our very capable waitress, greeted us immediately and took our drink and appetizer order. Chips and salsa are standard fare for the table. The menu is huge (spiral bound!) with tons of items to choose from. I ordered the Popcorn Shrimp appetizer ($6). Other appetizers include Chicken Wings ($10), Nachos ($7), Queso Dip ($5) and a Conquistador Platter ($11). My dinner companion ordered a Sangria Margarita which was very ample and colorful. The lunch/dinner portion of the menu includes Quesadillas with Chicken, Mushrooms, Pork and Veggie ($8 - $11); Salads of all types; Wraps, Sandwiches and Burgers. This is just the beginning. Every form of Mexican food is featured and there are some mouthwatering combinations. share with us on guymag.net

Let’s start with the Fajitas – Mahi- Mahi, Chicken, Shrimp and Steak ($12 - $14) and the Three Amigo Combo (chicken, shrimp and steak) for $21. Next are Taco Platters, Enchilada Platters, Burritos Platters and Veggie platters (all $8 – 11). And if all that is not enough to choose from, there are a number of different house specialties and combination plates. My dining partner ordered the Jumbo Chicken Chop ($12) – a large chicken breast dredged in bread crumbs, pan fried and served in a creamy garlic sauce. I ordered the Key West ($13), a combo platter consisting of a shrimp enchilada, a Mahi-Mahi taco and three grilled shrimp. Both meals were delicious. We topped the dinner off with a fabulous Banana Cheesecake dish and ice cream. When I arrived, there was plenty of room and plenty of parking. I have never seen a restaurant fill up so quickly. By the time I left, there were no seats to be had (and this place is big) and no parking either. Clearly this is a popular local Davie hangout. Hats and sombreros off to the Tijuana Taxi Co. Every table that evening promoted the Broward House Charity and the entire wait staff was instructed to discuss this most important fund raiser with the patrons. Broward House is a not-for-profit social services organization with 25 years of providing services for our community impacted by HIV and other health concerns. TIJUANA TAXI CO. 4400 S. UNIVERSITY DR. FITNESS

Bigger Beefier Biceps By Summer! BY TOM

BONANTI

W

hether your body type is long and lean (like a swimmer) or thick and compact (like a muscle bear), you’ve got to admit that a great set of guns (arms) will capture just about everyone’s attention. Now that summertime is upon us, it’s time to flex with the best of them. This week, let’s devote a little time to strengthening and building biceps, the front of the upper arms. Some muscle groups such as back and chest need to be exercised with many movements; some others with a few. For building biceps, the curl is just about the only exercise you can do, and it’s all you really need for mounds of upper-arm power. The four exercises I refer to this week comprise a thorough biceps workout. I like to superset biceps with triceps and shoulders on the same day, twice a week, with three days rest between workouts. I also like to work biceps along with chest. I don’t work back and biceps on the same day because when you work back really hard you are already blasting biceps pretty well. The front barbell curl is perfect for taking the biceps through their full range of motion. Stand grasping a barbell or EZ curl bar palms up in front of the thighs. Proceed to curl the bar up until the biceps meet your forearms. Pause, squeeze the positive upper contraction extra hard, then lower in a slow deliberate

manner to starting position to get the benefit of the negative phase of the movement. Perform 3 sets of eight to twelve repetitions. Make sure to stretch your biceps between each set. Stretching between sets during any weight training session will aid recovery and speed growth by bringing extra blood to tired stressed muscle fibers. Standing dumbbell curls are great for exercising each bicep separately. Stand grasping a dumbbell palm forward in the right hand. Proceed to curl the weight up until biceps meets forearm. Pause, squeeze the contraction, and then slowly lower to starting position. Perform eight to twelve reps, and then switch the weight to the left hand for another set. Perform 3 sets with each arm. Concentration dumbbell curls allow you to isolate each bicep and make it work hard without the help of the other muscle groups. Kneeling on the left knee, grasp a dumbbell palm up in the right hand just off the floor, elbow against the inner right thigh. Proceed to curl the weight up until bicep meets forearm. Squeeze and pause, then lower to starting position slowly. Perform eight to twelve reps, and then switch the weight to the left hand for another set kneeling on the right knee. Perform three sets with each arm. Isometric presses allow you to stretch, work and pose at the same time! Standing, curl the right arm to a 90-degree angle, then share with us on guymag.net

grasp the wrist with the left hand. Press down with the left hand while the right hand pushes up, feeling the biceps contract. Hold for 20 seconds, then release. Perform five repetitions then swap arms. Biceps are fun to work because as the smallest muscle group of the anterior upper body, they are naturally going to show results easier and quickly. Always pay attention to form and don’t overdo the amount of weight.
