NON-PROFIT PROFILE

Unity Coalition: Mentorships, Workshops And More For The LGBTQ Community by Jameer

baptiste

Unity Coalition has been operating in Miami as a Latin/Hispanic LGBTQ advocate, community educator and online resource center since 2002. In fact, they are the only Latin/Hispanic LGBTQ advocacy and education organization in South Florida that doesn’t only focus on HIV/AIDS healthcare, case management and prevention. The organization first started as a coalition of community members when Executive Director Herb Sosa and the other founders noticed that other LGBTQ organizations, both national and local, weren’t reaching out to Hispanic Miami voters in order to help defeat an effort at the time to overturn LGBTQ protection under the human rights ordinance for Miami-Dade County. Sosa and roughly 23 others put their own money and energy into educating the Miami Hispanic community, which helped to keep the human rights ordinance in force. However, during that time, they noticed a bigger need in the community so they decided to reorient the organization to focus on providing various resources to the underserved Latin/Hispanic LGBTQ community. “We are constantly evolving as an organization to fit need of the community,” said Sosa. “If we feel like an issue needs to be addressed in the community we put a team together. For example, we’ve been working on different workshops to help the transgender community.”

18

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

Their Transitioning workshop addresses transgender unemployment with a round table discussion that educates participants about the law and their rights under it, along with other pertinent information and coping mechanisms. Elevate, a workshop that began last year, concentrates on helping participants improve their everyday lives. It’s a relaxing and spiritual journey that includes activities like yoga and dating 101. Unity Coalition is committed to helping the community and cultivating leaders. Their LGBT College Scholarship program awards an art, design or education major every year with a $2,500 grant and a Junior Board position with the organization. “We are staffed by volunteers including myself, which allows us to put 100 percent back into our program,” Sosa said. “A bulk of our funding comes from fundraisers and donations.” One of their biggest fundraisers is their pride festival Orgullo, which showcases LGBTQ Hispanic culture. This year, the festival will run from Sept. 3-Oct. 4 with more than 20 events geared toward National Hispanic Heritage Month. Most of the events are free to the public, with a headline festival to be held in Downtown Miami. To learn more about Unity Coalition, visit their website at unitycoalition.org.

Adidas Sets Pride Style A by

Michael Davis

didas, the Americanbased sportswear brand, has commemorated LGBT Pride Month with a limited edition trio of paint-splattered sneakers, drawing inspiration from the LGBT pride rainbow flag, a symbol of equality and inclusiveness that signifies the diversity of the LGBT community. The company selected three of its most popular designs for the Pride push, which launched this week and will stay in production for two months. Replete with detail, each style in the pack features texture and movement: multi-colored paint trickles through the perforations in the Stan Smith ($100); the upper of the Adilette Slide ($50) is saturated in varying hues, leaving the three stripes fully visible; and the Superstar ($100) has its sole doused in paint splatter, giving the impression of having stomped through a spectrum of color. This attention to detail extends to the inside of the Stan Smith and Superstar models as well, with both styles featuring vividly, color-saturated insoles. To help commemorate the launch, Adidas will be donating a portion of the Pride Pack's sales to its hometown neighbor, Portland's New Avenues for Youth, a local advocacy 40

group that helps empower homeless and LGBT youth to build life skills for a successful future. Additionally, Adidas is teaming with Portland Monthly as a sponsor of the magazine's LGBT Pride Celebration, Flare, who will donate a portion of the event ticket sales to area LGBT charities. While Adidas didn’t illuminate the point, a fan commenting on the company’s Instagram account reminded readers of the company’s place in gay history. “In 1969, violent riots erupted on the streets of New York City after police raided the Stone Wall Inn, unjustly targeting the gay community,” the comment said. “The Superstar was also released that year and is now redesigned to remember all those who fought for equality. Adidas is following in the footsteps of its competitor Nike, which, last year, launced a range of rainbow-colored Be True collection of sneakers and clothing. Adidas US scored 80 (out of 100) on the most recent Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index. Its parent company, Adidas Group (which also owns Reebok and Rockport brands) recently reported record global revenue of 4.1billion ($4.6billion) in the first quarter of 2015. theguymag

BARTENDER OF THE WEEK

Jason Allamon Sparkles At Beefcakes Grill

BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

Jason Allamon’s cheerful attitude and glittery attire has earned him the nickname Sparkle. When you meet Allamon, it’s not hard to see why his friends and colleagues call him by that amusing yet adorable name. Both his outer appearance and his inner being shine as bright as the sun from his beach blonde hair to his effervescent disposition. “It’s part of my personality,” Allamon said. “I sparkle from the inside out.” But it wasn’t a nickname he gave himself, he was actually dubbed Sparkle by his fellow passengers aboard an Atlantis Event cruise (a gay male cruise provider) and it has disembarked with him ever since. Allamon came to know the other passengers on the Atlantis Event cruises, as he became a frequent attendee on the voyages. And he made sure to standout just by being himself, which of course entails showering himself with glitter so that whenever he steps into a room he sparkles.

The nickname was destined to be synonymous with Allamon. It was all just a matter of time. Not even Allamon’s hometown of Lake Erie, Pennsylvania, could dampen his jolly spirit and colorful persona. Known as the mistake on the lake or the Dreary Erie, Allamon’s small hometown was a hotbed for boredom and overcast days – a place where the sun hardly ever comes out. Young Allamon would brighten up the days with his passion for the theater. He was a very creative young child and he expressed his creativity through acting and singing. All throughout high school Allamon participated in Broadway themed school plays and community stage productions. “I dared to be different,” Allamon recalled. Allamon graduated high school and stayed in Pennsylvania while he earned his college degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management with a concentration in Travel and Tourism. But he didn’t stay in town for much longer theguymag

Jason Allamon Favorite Drink This special drink is Jason Allamon’s favorite. He say’s "Its delicious and fabulous at the same time!!" Why he likes making it - "It sweetens the goo.. And gets the party started.”

LEG SPREADER

Recipe -In a decorative glass, fill with ice, add 1 1/2 oz. of Malibu rum, 1 1/2 oz. Midori, 2oz. of Pineapple juice then top of with a splash of sprite, shake hard, and garnish with a pineapple wedge and a cherry.

thereafter, he decided to start his professional life somewhere else beside the Dreary Erie. Allamon was always fond of Florida ever since he was a young child when his parents, his older brother and he would travel down to visit his grandparents. So with his degree in hand, Allamon conjured up a plan to fly to Orlando and travel south by car until he found the perfect Florida destination to call home. In 1998, at the age of 23, Allamon took residence in the well-to-do beach town of Naples, Florida. While living and working there for ten years, Allamon would visit Fort Lauderdale at least once a month until he finally made the move down to be around a busier city and to be closer to the gay nightlife. He received a transfer from his job in Naples to Boca and moved into Wilton Station. It wasn’t until three years after his move that he found his way to Beefcakes Grill. He loved the atmosphere so much as a regular guest that he sought out management and became share with us on guymag.net

a bartender. “It’s like Cheers (80’s popular television show), ‘where everyone knows your name’,” said Allamon. “The regulars here are part of our family!” Beefcakes Grill is more than just a job for Allamon; it’s essentially his home away from home. He even refers to the bar goers not as his patrons but rather as his guests. It’s an environment where Allamon can showcase his creativity through his unique spin on traditional drinks, joyful personality and glitzy decorative arrangements for Boardwalk Bar’s (the attached indoor club) special events and pageants. Allamon is not only a bartender at Beefcakes Grill, but also the manager. BEEFCAKES GRILL 1721 NORTH ANDREWS AVENUE FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA 33311 954-463-6969 theguymag

INTERVIEW

The Spice of Fame Miss Fame Performs at The Manor By Tom TeiTjen

Miss Fame describes competing on RuPaul’s Drag Race as the most challenging gig she has undertaken so far. “It required a constant internal fire, a relentless exploration of my abilities to develop into something bigger than I’d ever been before,” she explains. “It made me realize how much I truly care about my art.” That passion and drive carries through into “Rubber Doll,” Fame’s first single from her new album. She sings how, just as a doll made from rubber, the persona of Miss Fame may appear hard and unbreakable, but there is a softer side too. “I used to watch all of Marilyn Monroe’s films on repeat because she was a doll on camera. I was fascinated by the fact that she struggled internally with her mind. I found that humanizing and I just loved her so much more for it.“I also play dual rolls in this twisted game of life,” continues Fame, referring to Kurtis, the man beneath the make-up. “Both have helped mold me into the extraordinary form I am today.” Miss Fame who just released her debut album Beauty Marked on iTunes will be in town on Saturday, June 13th to perform songs from her new album at The Manor.

You know the old saying about rubber and glue. Did Ru’s criticism during the show just bounce right off you? RuPaul is someone whom I respect to such a degree that I really wanted to listen and become better. I took Ru's criticism to heart and tried to apply it to my growth on the show. Did you find any of it to be mean spirited? I never thought that it was coming from a bad place. Ru wants me to be successful so he pushed me to be the best me I can be. What about the guest judges? My favorite was Isaac Mizrahi. I’m honored he appreciated my art. I love that a fashion icon can see my vision. What are some critiques you will apply to your career going forward? I held back in situations I could have really excelled in. I also got nervous and allowed it

to overtake my natural uplifting spirit. I need to work on giving it my all, having fun and living in the moment. Enough about glue, let’s talk rubber, Rubber Doll, to be exact. The first single off my debut album! What inspired you to create an album? I have kept a journal for ten years. The album was largely inspired by my own life stories and dreams. It’s a personal album but delicious in sound. Is that how you would describe it? It’s ambient pop. I wanted to create something more than a drag album. The record is authentic to my art and the evolution of my persona. It’s high glamour, just like Miss Fame. Have you always wanted to be a rubber doll? Rubber Doll is a unique song, inspired by theguymag

INTERVIEW

my time working in the fetish community, exploring the underground latex world and discovering the men that admired the allure of Miss Fame. You wrote about those times in a journal? Oh yes! I wrote about it all! When the opportunity to create my album came up, it became a story worth sharing. So Rubber Doll isn’t about the crazy people with Barbie obsessions? Not exactly.

Fame but now I see this is what I was meant to be. I hope it inspire others. How so? I grew up in the country on a chicken farm and was able to develop into Miss Fame. I think that’s proof that anyone from any background can live out their authentic dreams. Will this be your first time in Wilton Manor? Yes, I am so excited! I can't wait to meet my fans and share my album.

It’s amazing how you’re Ken and Barbie wrapped into one. The best part of being Kurtis is feeling free and goofy. I love telling stories and making people laugh. What’s the best part of being Miss Fame? Living the life of a goddess and shining bright for the world to see. Fame is inspired by Linda Evangelista and the golden age of Hollywood. If you had to choose between them, who would you pick? Kurtis. I enjoy being me and embellishing my body into the glamour of everything else. Does Kurtis still model as a man? I do but I don't seek it like I did in previous years. Being Fame is the focus, but I will consider all opportunities that present themselves. Has being famous always been the goal? No, I would say being appreciated is the goal. Well said! I never thought my drag would evolve into

DINING

Ambry Restaurant: Lecker und Frisch

by Tim

HarT

This truly is a German restaurant. Family owned and operated since 1981, specializing in German and American Cuisine, the Ambry is a great place to go for lunch or for dinner. On each and every occasion, bar none, my party and I have been greeted and seated by the lovely Holly who waited on us and made sure we enjoyed the visit. I found the service to be as good as the food. The Ambry is located on the southeast corner of Commercial Blvd and Bayview Drive, between the Intracoastal and Federal Highway. There is plenty of parking in front of the restaurant both metered and unmetered. I have mostly been going to the Ambry for lunch as of late. Months ago, I went and they had horseradish soup. It was INCREADIBLE!!! It was then I decided they needed to be featured in GUY magazine. On my latest visit, both my companion and I had items off of the daily special menu. My companion enjoyed the pork wings, three very ample pork drumsticks in a delicious barbeque sauce. I had six sausages with sauerkraut. Excellent. I became familiar with the Ambry years ago from their participation in the Oakland Park Oktoberfest. They are the food purveyor for the authentic German food offerings. At the Oktoberfest, I would finish each meal off with the delicious hot apple strudel and look forward to the next year’s festival. The restaurant is divided into a number of rooms. One room consists of a full bar with plenty of seating in the event you are waiting for a table or just want to enjoy a cocktail. Each little room in the restaurant has dining tables and character all its own. It is a neat place to enjoy a dinner or lunch and provides a lasting memory. The lunch menu contains interesting soup selections including the Goulash Soup (cup $5; bowl $7), Liver Dumpling ($7), and French Onion ($7). There are burger and sandwich selections and a large offering share with us on guymag.net

of German specialties including: Kassler Rippchen - roast smoked pork loin with sauerkraut or potato salad ($10), Bayrische Bauernplatte - bratwurst, smoked pork loin, served with Sauerkraut or Potato Salad ($13), and the always tasty Homemade Bratwurst or Knockwurst with sauerkraut or potato salad ($10). The lunch menu is rounded out with salads, steak and seafood. The dinner menu is equally engaging. In addition to the soups there are cold and hot appetizers. Cold appetizers include Beef Tartar ($16), Black Forest Ham ($15) and a Salad Bar ($10). Hot appetizers feature Baked Brie with Lingonberries ($10), Potato Pancakes ($7) and a Mixed Sausage Platter for 2 ($13). House specialties (which include the salad bar) are truly a German smorgasbord. Schweinebraten -roast pork with dumpling and red cabbage ($18), Sauerbraten – marinated beef roast and with an outstanding sweet and sour gravy, served with homemade noodles and red cabbage ($18) and Wiener Schnitzel – breaded and pan fried veal cutlet, served with lingonberries and home fried potatoes ($22). Steak and seafood are also available. An interesting final section is titled On the Wild Side and includes a Rehbraten Hbertus - roasted venison served with an outstanding gravy and homemade spaetzle and red cabbage ($30), New Zealand Spring Lamb ($34) and a Buffalo Steak ($36). Finish your evening off with a nightcap and a delicious desert. The restaurant is conveniently located and I am sure oft overlooked. Nevertheless, a must dine experience. Golf Can Be The Perfect Sport To Cure What Ails You J B

BY AMEER

APTISTE

Golf has been around for centuries and somewhere along the way, it’s developed a reputation for being an elitist, expensive and timeconsuming sport. But there’s more to golf than just the perceived high cost and prestige associated with the game. The physical and mental health benefits might outweigh the negative preconceived notions about the sport. Golf has been linked to cardiovascular exercise (cardio), depression relief and sleep improvement. There have been multiple studies that have attributed cardio to reduce risk of heart diseases, bone diseases and arthritis. But not everyone wants to jog around the block or exert massive amounts of energy on a treadmill after a busy day at work. A leisurely one-to-three hour round of golf can produce the same results as spending countless time panting on the elliptical. And, if its allowed by the course, you can increase your leisure workout by carrying your own golf clubs for the 18 holes, which will also save you bucks on a catty. The mental health benefits stem from the serene environment and social interaction on the golf course. Golf course developers create their courses with a passion for natural art. Their green pastures of nature are meticulously well maintained and possess an element of tranquility allowing golfers to feel at ease while they quietly focus on

their swing as if they’re in a meditative state of mind. The sport is usually enjoyed by a group of friends who use the few hours it takes to play the game to converse amongst each other about current events and personal topics, which can in itself be very therapeutic, functioning as a stress reliever. By the time you’re done soaking bountiful Vitamin D from the sun’s rays, you will feel physically and mentally content. Studies have shown that combined with a proper diet, physical activity helps you sleep better by decreasing restlessness. theguymag

Miami's Retro Vagabond Hotel: A Blast From The Past BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

Take one step onto the property of the Vagabond Hotel and you are instantly swept back to a decade in time when station wagons and motels were the epitome of American travel. The MIMO District, which runs between 54th Street and 77th Street on Biscayne Boulevard, is a historical preservation of mid-century modern architecture, and the Vagabond Hotel is no exception. The Miami hotel has been carefully restored to stay true to its 1950s roots, from the soft wooded-leg yellow fabric couch in the lobby to the AstroTurf grass surrounding the secluded tropical pool area. “It had amazing bones we just had to renovate the insides,” said May Mallouh, the hotel's chief operating officer. “It takes you back in time just with more modern amenities and benefits.” When you are on hotel premises, you are completely removed from modern life and transported into an

episode of the hit television show, Mad Men. Guest rooms, with their 1950s retro look, are named after popular cars of that decade: Electra Deluxe, Skylark Double, Galaxie King and Catalina King (The Catalina King is an ADA accessible room). The chic, creative rooms include glass walk-in showers and imported Italian beds made of a soybean derivative that prevents bedbug infestations. Enjoy a daily happy hour Monday through Friday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Vagabond Pool Bar, which is surrounded by lush foliage that drowns out the outside world. They have an exquisite restaurant onsite that has become revered by foodies everywhere. Executive Chef Alex Chang was featured in Zagat as one of the top 30 Miami chefs under 30. like peanuts and chapulines, with its grasshoppers imported from Mexico. The Vagabond Hotel is centrally located to all the most popular areas of Miami: Bal Harbor, Midtown, the Design District, Wynwood, Downtown, Brickell, Bayside and South Beach. No destination is more than 20 minutes away. “Have your 'feet on the sand' in ten minutes,” said Mallouh. Jump into a Car2go at the Vagabond’s convenient Car2go parking lot located in the front of the hotel for a quick zip around town. This summer, a limited number of daily pool passes will be available to locals. The Vagabond is extremely gay-friendly and hosts LGBT events throughout the year. VAGABOND HOTEL 7301 BISCAYNE BLVD. Spy

(Courtesy of movir-trailers.net)

B

eginning with its Bond homage opening credits, Spy (20th Century Fox) is better than it should have been, given its timeworn premise and writer/director Paul Feig’s hit (Bridesmaids) or miss (The Heat) track record. Even though it’s not the first 21st century spy comedy to hit the multiplex in 2015 (see Kingmen: The Secret Service), it’s easy to love this Melissa McCarthy vehicle because it keeps the action and laughs coming at a steady clip. Frumpy Susan (Melissa McCarthy) is stuck in the “basement” at CIA HQ in Langley, advising super spy Bradley (Jude Law) via earpiece, about what dangers are in his vicinity as he searches for the mad Bulgarian in possession of a nuclear bomb. Susan and Bradley’s rapport is careful, concerned and slightly suggestive, although she doesn’t stand a chance with him. When he is killed in line of duty, Susan is shattered. Set against the backdrop of the hunt for the nuclear weapon of mass destruction is the story of Susan coming into her own as a

74

share with us on guymag.net

woman and an agent. Sent on what begins as a track and report mission that takes her to Paris, Budapest and assorted European locales, both the assignments and Susan develop into something much more. She ends up holding her own against rogue agent Ford (Jason Stathan), a ruthless villainess Rayna (Rose Byrne), insensitive arms dealer DeLuca (Bobby Canavale) and a host of others, in mostly funny, situations. Susan’s personal transformation, as well as her undercover identities including Delaware single mom Carla (about whose getup Susan says makes her look like “someone’s homophobic aunt”) and Midwestern cat-lady Penny, are consistently hilarious. McCarthy is truly at her best here, hurling insults like explosive bouquets. Spy also has more than its fair share of unexpected twists and turns, succeeding as a thriller as well as a comedy. However, some of the fight and chase scenes go on for too long, and the ending leaves the audience with the impression that it simply ran out of steam.

ou don’t have to have ever seen the popular HBO series on which the big screen adaptation of Entourage (WB/HBO) is based to dislike the movie. You can dislike it on its own merits or lack thereof. One of the most heinous and cartoony casts of characters ever assembled, Entourage follows impossibly pretty actor Vincent (Adrian Grenier, who appears shirtless once in the whole movie. Once!)

Larson (Billy Bob Thornton), the studio’s largest financier, happy and far away in Amarillo, Texas. Because the movie is heavily over-budget and in need of more cash, Ari is saddled with Travis (Haley Joel Osment), Larson’s trolllike “complete and utter…buffoon” of a son, while he is in Hollywood. Jealous of Vincent, Travis threatens to derail the entire project. Meanwhile, the other dudes are dealing with their own nightmares,

and his posse, consisting of his ridiculous half-brother John aka Drama (the increasingly unappealing Kevin Dillon), his manager Eric aka E (Kevin Connolly) and his newly fit and trim driver Turtle (Jerry Ferrara). At the top (or bottom, depending on your perspective) of the heap is Ari (Jeremy Piven in a pelt-like hairpiece), Vincent’s former manager and a newly crowned studio head. Vincent, ready to get back to work again after a failed nine-day marriage, teams up with Ari to star in and direct the big budget sci-fi epic Hyde. Ari is concerned with keeping share with us on guymag.net

including John’s sex tape making the rounds on the Internet, Turtle’s miscommunication with MMA fighter Ronda Rousey, Eric’s out of control libido and strong swimmers, and Ari’s anger-management issues. Plus, it’s been a while since a character was created to insult not one, but two, minority groups, and that seems to be the sole purpose of Lloyd (Rex Lee), Ari’s gay, Asian former assistant. The only thing that could possibly make Entourage the least bit entertaining or redeeming would be a catastrophic seismic event similar to the one in San Andreas. theguymag

FITNESS

Spectacular Pectorals: Part 1

by Tom

bonanTi

Y

our pecs play a crucial role in just about every sport you play – basketball, boxing, martial arts, etc. They are also, for many guys, the number one vanity muscle. They are the largest muscle group of the anterior upper body. Sure, pecs are visible when you strip down at the pool or on the dance floor. But great pecs are just as noticeable when you strut your stuff in a suit or tux. They are like a badge of honor that you should wear with pride. Two basic muscles comprise the chest. The pectoralis major are the slabs on either side of the chest above the rib cage. The smaller pectoralis minor is deeper and not as visibly evident. The pec minor not only helps fill out the upper chest when it is nicely developed, but it also stabilizes the scapula, thus preventing shoulder injuries during sports and daily activities. This week, I want to present a workout

78

share with us on guymag.net

theguymag

program that will help you to develop a bigger, stronger chest. These exercises are basic and should be a part of every chest workout whether you are an advanced bodybuilder or an eager neophyte. Make sure to adhere to proper form and begin with three to four sets of 8 to 10 repetitions of each exercise. If you are performing bench presses for the first time where you are pressing a weight above your head, you may want to have a friend or trainer spot you. Barbell bench presses are great for building strength and mass. Lie on a flat bench with your feet on the floor and grasp the barbell with your hands slightly wider than shoulder width apart. Lift the bar off the rack and slowly lower it to midchest level (just above your “nips”). Try not to let your elbows go down much past 90 degrees since this can unduly irritate your rotator cuff muscles. Pause, and then drive theguymag

guymagtube

the bar upward until your arms are almost locked and repeat. Incline dumbbell presses are superb for developing the upper chest. Lie on an incline bench set at a 15-30 degree incline. Hold a pair of dumbbells over your chest, palms facing forward, knuckles aimed at the ceiling. Slowly lower the dumbbells to the sides of your chest until you feel a nice stretch in your pecs. Pause, then drive the dumbbells straight upward until your arms are nearly locked. Repeat. Flies with dumbbells or cables are your basic shaping and sculpting exercises for chest. Lie on an incline bench set at a 15-30 degree incline. Hold a pair of dumbbells over your chest, palms facing inward, knuckles pointed toward the ceiling. Keeping your arms slightly bent, slowly lower the dumbbells in an arcing motion until your upper arms are parallel to the floor. Think of this motion like you are hugging a big tree. share with us on guymag.net

Pause, return the dumbbells to starting position and repeat. Dumbbell pullovers are another favorite of mine. Grasp a dumbbell with both hands. To grip the weights, make a triangle with your index fingers and thumbs touching. Lie in a cross-bench position with your shoulders and head on the bench, feet on the floor. Beginning with your arms in a locked out position above your chest, slowly lower the dumbbell behind your head until your elbows reach your forehead level, pause, then bring the dumbbell back to the starting position. Stay tuned next week for a few more advanced chest exercises. Contact trainertomb@aol.com with all you fitness questions. Call Tom 954- 5571119 to set up a free intake.
