NON-PROFIT PROFILE

The Robust Sound Of 170 Gay Male Voices BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF) is “Celebrating Five Years of Fabulous!” this year. The group originated in September 2010 with no more than 40 singers in their first season and within five short years they have massed 170 chorus members who delight and amaze spectators with their marvelous harmonies. The strength behind their voices is captivating and enchanting. It’s a prevailing sound that can’t be fully described but only witnessed by ones own ears. Their concerts are unique experiences, a difference from a mixed chorus made up of both males and females. “An all male chorus has a slightly more powerful and fuller sound,” said 5th Season President Dennis St. Jean. “It’s less shrill.” The large group is made up of talented male singers who go through an interview and audition in order to be inducted into the chorus. Each active member attends a minimum number of rehearsals and pays monthly dues of $20. “Most of our members have sung in a formal chorus (a chorus that regularly rehearses, has a conductor and offers sold concerts to the public),” said St. Jean. “Some are

Equity Card holders (meaning they’ve performed on Broadway).” The members are dedicated to the chorus and rehearse from September to June to fulfill a 10-month season under the leadership of Artistic Director and Composer Gordon Roberts. Each season the chorus produces three themed concerts that have continually been sold out since its conception. The Holiday Concerts kick off the season with four performances two weekends before Christmas. The Classical Concerts are performed twice at the end of March and include choral works by composers like Wolfgang Mozart and American composer Randol Alan Bass. Each season is topped off with a more playful, show tunes Pride Concert with two performances during the Pride month of June. The year, the Pride Concert honored the group's fifth anniversary, a single grand performance with Tony nominated recording artist and TV actress Ann Hampton Callaway. Enjoy their sweet melodies and intense harmonies during their upcoming Holiday Concert, Season of Love – A Musical Journey Celebrating the Sounds of the Holiday, starting December 11, 2015. theguymag

BARTENDER OF THE WEEK

Boardwalk Bartender John Arculeo, Both Brains & Brawn BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

Photo credits: Courtesy of John Arculeo

Take one look at 24-year-old John Arculeo and there’s no mistaking that he hits the gym hard. Then, have a conversation with him and you can immediately tell that he also has a good head on his shoulders. Arculeo has been putting his brain muscles and body muscles to work to get what he wants since he was a teenagaer. At the age 13, Arculeo took notice of his older brothers muscular physique and automatically knew he wanted the same. “He was as strong as an ox,” Arculeo recalled. It wasn’t that Arculeo looked up to his older brother, he just liked the appeal of muscles and he realized the attention they brought as well. He also knew it would help him standout from the rest. Weightlifting became a constant in Arculeo's life--so much so that he made the conscious decision to move out of his mom’s house and his hometown of Cassel-

berry, Florida, to the small town of Deland with his dad for high school. Arculeo and his dad weren’t even on good terms when he decided to make the move but Deland High School had a better weightlifting program and that’s all that mattered to the budding strongman. Arculeo graduated from high school in 2010 and after taking a short break from school, he enrolled in an Orlando-based marine mechanical school, UTI, while still living with his father. Shortly after starting at UTI, Arculeo secured an apprenticeship at Hey Good Brothers Marine, a mechanical boating repair shop. Things were going well for the allAmerican 19 year old until he hit a series of snags. First, he learned that his school was not accredited--so he stopped attending. Then he learned that in order to get certified through his apprenticeship, he would have to spend two years working at a theguymag

John Arculeo's Favorite Drink

This special drink is John Arculeo’s favorite. He says “If you think about it, all of these flavors are tropical flavors." "Every single thing works together to make a very very tasty drink.” "It will blow your head off!”

Tropical Punch

Taste John's own creation Recipe: Equal Parts (Quarter of an ounce of each) of Coconut Rum, Mango Vodka, Pineapple Vodka, Orange Vodka and Hypnotic liqueur. A splash of Sprite, cranberry juice, orange juice and pineapple juice. Combine all ingredients into a highball glass, filled with ice. Garnish with a orange wedge and cherry.

measly $140 a week before he could get his certificate to officially work as an employee. It was then that he began to explore his interest in men and ventured into a gay club, Pulse Orlando. He quickly fell in love and adamantly pursued a job there. While still apprenticing, he worked gigs as a Pulse shot boy and eventually started dancing at the club. When his boss at the apprenticeship made him choose between dancing or marine work, Arculeo chose dancing. Fun and lucrative beats hard work for low cash every time. Arculeo slowly began to come out to his friends and family. Even his father was okay with it or so he thought, until he asked him to move out. Looking down from his perch up on the bar, and seeing the tips being left, Arculeo realized that if he was going to make it in his solo new world, he would need to be share with us on guymag.net

behind the bar rather than on top of it. “It was all a blessing in disguise, I’ve learned more in that short amount of time then ever before,” Arculeo mentioned about the series of mishaps in his life. “It was an eye opening experience.” Three years later and a move to unfamiliar Wilton Manors, with no car and only $500 in his pocket, Arculeo ended up as an optimistic happy hour bartender at Boardwalk. “This is a career for me, not a job,” said Arculeo “And I love my career more than anything!” Visit Arculeo at Boardwalk Monday–Friday at 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Get Salted: It's Known To Improve The Body & Mind BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

It’s been an uphill battle for Suzann Hollis since her tragic construction accident 18 years ago, but she’s finally found her saving grace and she’s committed to sharing it with the rest of us. “I couldn’t find a passion after the accident.” Hollis confessed. “Now, I know I want to leave a healing legacy.” On June 20, Hollis opened Salt This Way in Wilton Manors. The new business is her creative interpretation of the holistic therapy, Halotherapy. In the 1800s, Polish doctor Felix Bochkowsky published a book about the health benefits of salt dust after he observed the respiratory issues found in coal and metal miners were nonexistent in that of salt miners. By the 1950s, scientists were backing Dr. Bochkowsky claims with effective salt therapies. Shortly Suzann Hollis thereafter, saltrooms Photos by started appearing Salt This Way web site in European hotels and spas when people realized that the salt not only diminished respiratory ailments but also combated emotional and skin problems. solidified her passion for operating machinery. However, while living out her dream tragedy struck on a cold Chicago December day in 1996. Operating a crane solo, Hollis became entangled in the gears, which began to crush the left side of her body. It wasn’t until she let out a big scream as the gears punctured her lung that her co-workers realized something was wrong. Twenty-two surgeries later and the lost of her left arm, Hollis rose from the incident resilient and determined to press on. “I attribute my strong well to the grandma who raised me,” said Hollis “The word “can’t” didn’t exist in our household.” Knowing that her accident was due to improper safety measures, Hollis focused her energy on getting her project safety management license while still recovering. Within a year and half from the date of the accident, she was back to work. “It helped me get through the trauma of it all,” mentioned Hollis. However, it couldn’t remove the everlasting physical and mental effects – a punctured lung, physical imbalance and phantom pain, which has no cure. theguymag

Dolphins And Parrots And Alligators, Oh My: A Florida Wildlife Guide BY JAMEER BAPTISTE The Latin flare and international cultures that flourish in South Florida aren’t the only exotic species in the region. Our wildlife is just as diverse and robust as those who come to visit or call Florida their home. And just like our melting pot of a society, there are those rare native species that have earned their claim to fame as well. One infamous and well-known native species is the Florida Alligator.

If your not looking for something so daring, and you rather admire the Florida beasts from afar, then take an airboat tour and watch the gators in their natural habitat as you glide above the Everglades swamp. Or enjoy the wildlife show that continuously shocks the audience as alligator handlers put their lives in jeopardy while carefully manhandling an alligator for your viewing pleasure. Plus, there are other animals to see like Snakes, Peacocks and Parrots. And if your stomach isn’t tied up in knots by the end of the show, try your hand at some of the exotic cuisine like frog legs, catfish or even alligator tail and sausage. When in Rome! fun and interesting programs like shadow a trainer for a day, be kissed by a dolphin, or even paint with a dolphin. Dolphins Plus has 13 programs in total--all of which are interactive activities. The best part about Dolphins Plus is that their facilities are marine mammal conservations in which the staffs tentatively care for the marine life and ecosystem. The staff consider their mammals family, so much so that each dolphin and sea lion has their own bio description with attached photos and recorded acoustics on the website.

Preservation of our wildlife in Florida is increasingly important as the state’s natural habitat becomes more and more populated by us humans and our manmade environments and gadgets. The Florida Manatee is one mammal that has suffered a great deal at our hands. The gentle giants, commonly called the sea cow, are currently endangered because of engine boats that crash into them as they swim close to the water’s surface. You can practically see these quiet, adorable sea cows all throughout Florida especially in the winter when they migrant south to warm waters. However, random sightings can be hard to catch To learn more about these aquatic mammals and to get a better chance at a glimpse of them, visit the Manatee Observation and Education Center (480 N. RECREATION

Are You Ready For Some Football? by Jameer

baptiste

o

It is an all too common storyline for most gay men but those days of opting out of physical education (PE) class in high school (because you felt so darn uncomfortable) is a thing of the past. As we gay men get older and more comfortable in our own skin and our surroundings, physical fitness and outdoor activities become less tormenting and more enjoyable. It’s then that we sometimes find out that we are more athletic than what we once thought. So now, instead of fantasizing about those iron glad hunks bent over in seductive tights, we can become those stud muffins. Football is an honored and revered American sport that is watched all over the world. But it’s also played in the backyards of many neighborhood homes and in community parks as well. The sport itself is extremely accessible because it doesn’t have to be played on a designated football field. Literally, anywhere with an open grass or dirt (and in some cases paved) area can be transformed into a makeshift football field. Not to mention: the countless Fort Lauderdale parks with public football fields like Holiday Park (1150 G. Harold Martin Drive Fort Lauderdale FL 33304; 954-828-5385). Gather a group of your friends together and show them what you’re made of. Wheth-

er effeminate and masculine, the game is perfect for some accelerating, fun-filled friendship rivalry. The most commonly known game of football is tackle football, which happens to be the most aggressive form of the game. In tackle football, make sure to strap up with protective gear and be prepared for bodily impact. The game is intense and hard-hitting but once you’re in play and your adrenaline is pumping, you become solely focused on one thing--The Win. It’s a perfect sport to relieve aggression and stress – like shouting in a pillow but so much better. If you are looking for less physical contact, then flag football is perfect for you. In exchange for tackling, a slight tug on your opponents flag football belt will do the trick. With that said, it’s important to note that flag football is still an intense sport just with less bodily impact. Interested in joining a team? Visit the Florida Amateur Flag Football League (FAFFL) at faffl.leagueapps.com. FAFFL is a statewide LGBTQIA coed contact flag football league. The organization prides itself on providing a competitive and recreational activity for the whole community. Whether you choose tackle or flag football, you will enjoy group encouragement, physical fitness and stress relief. theguymag

The New Orleans House is literally in walking distance to many of the LGBT nightlife in the area as well as great restaurants, boutique stores and beautiful art galleries. Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza: Italian Goes Mainstream by Tim

HarT

Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza should be on your restaurant rotation. I frequent the Planation location, but I have included the east Fort Lauderdale address for our readers’ convenience. This is a very successful operation with locations all over the country and six locations in Broward alone. They attribute the success of the operation to a combination of top-quality ingredients, a simple, consistent menu, authentic, coal ovens and a staff that treats guests like “family.” To begin, they have a very interesting story. Growing up on Long Island in a traditional Italian family, Anthony Bruno, the proprietor, had a passion for great food that started at a very young age. His father, Anthony Sr., moved to South Florida in 1982 and father and son debuted Anthony’s Runway 84, (one of the area’s most celebrated and popular restaurants). In 2002, Anthony unveiled a new concept that introduced the taste of coal oven pizza to South Floridians. He believed there was a great opportunity to create pizza that rivaled the ones he enjoyed growing up in New York. The Plantation location is very nicely laid out. There is table seating both indoors

and out. There is a fully stocked bar at one end of the restaurant to imbibe while waiting to be seated, or just to enjoy a sporting event on one of the many flat screens that adorn the walls. While it is not the largest of spaces, it is never cramped, but it is quite popular, so get there early or be prepared to wait (the wait is worth it). There are old albums and covers adorning the wall and a great poster of John Lennon. It is a very nice atmosphere. After being seated by the hostess, I ordered the Roasted Chicken Wings to start with. These wings are special. They are served with caramelized onions and focaccia bread. I get the small (10 wings for $9.50) but they have a large (20 wings for $15.50) for the heartier appetite. I compliment this order with a Coal Oven Traditional Pie (12” for $12.25; 16” for $15.50). They cook their pizzas in an 800-degree oven that provides a ‘well-done’ flavor that has become their trademark. They have a number of different specialty named pizzas but you can create whatever you are in the mood for and they will make it. Each additional topping is $1.75 theguymag

for a small or $2.75 for a large. The popularity of this unique pizza, which takes only four minutes to cook, and the restaurants’ classic, casual ambiance has helped Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza build an almost cult-like following. With a focus on fresh ingredients and authentic recipes, Anthony’s traditional and specialty pizzas (with dough made daily and stretched to order) are delicious. In addition to the great items I ordered on this visit, they offer a wide variety of salads and coal fired sandwiches including Anthony’s Classic Italian Salad— enough for two at $9.25. You can add gorgonzola (2.25) or mozzarella (2.25); Fresh Mozzarella and Tomato Salad ($6.95); Italian Tuna Salad Sandwich ($8.50)– served with lemon olive oil, tomato and arugula served on focaccia bread; and a Traditional Calzone with mozzarella and ricotta ($14.75 for a small; $17.75 for a large). An interesting section of the menu features Italian soul food, served family style with focaccia bread; Meatballs with Ricotta Cheese--large hand-rolled meatballs slowly cooked in tomato sauce ($10.95 for 4; $5.95 for 2); Eggplant Marino--thinly sliced and share with us on guymag.net

served with fresh tomato sauce and Romano cheese ($10.95); and Broccoli Rabe & Sausage - bitter Italian greens sautéed in garlic and olive oil served with Italian sausage ($10.95). Finish your dinner off with an Espresso ($3.00) and a piece of New York Style Cheese Cake ($4.75). They have a special lunch menu and catering as well. Anthony Bruno often compares the restaurant industry to sports, pointing out that an athlete could be cheered by the fans one game, then booed the next. His motto: “I’m only as good as my last pizza.” Do yourself a favor and try Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza. I’m sure you will become a fan!

Shania Twain “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” may be a ridiculous play on words (and possibly, ambiguously transphobic), but its massive popularity still helped Shania Twain’s third album Come on Over become the best-selling studio album of all time by a female act, selling around forty million copies. Some of her biggest hits include “You’re Still the One,” “From This Moment On,” “Forever and for Always,” and “Any Man of Mine.” After a twoyear stint at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Twain is back on tour, performing tonight at the American Airlines Arena. 7:30 p.m. American Airlines Arena. 601 Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

Two years later, she had her own studio album, Yours Truly, and the single “The Way” became a smash hit. In the film, ice queen Elsa must find a way to manage her powers in order to save her sister and bring back order to the kingdom of Arendelle. All the while, false love, true love, a trusty reindeer, and an adorable talking snowman play vital roles in their quests. The movie is the highest grossing animated film of all time and received two Academy Awards. It will be screened as a sing-along experience tonight at Mizner Park Amphitheater. 8:00 p.m. MIzner Park Amphitheater. 590 Plaza Real. Boca Raton. 33432.

The Not-So-Great Depression BY

Infinitely Polar Bear Cast

nfinitely Polar Bear (Sony Pictures Classics) marks the directorial debut of the film’s writer/director Maya C. Forbes and it feels like a first movie. A deeply autobiographical project, the film also stars Forbes’ daughter Imogene Wolodarsky as Amelia, the character based on Forbes herself. Beginning in 1967, around the time Cam (Mark Ruffalo) and Maggie (Zoe Saldana), the parents of Amelia (Wolodarsky) and Faith (Ashley Aufderheide), met while working at the Boston-based PBS affiliate WGBH, Infinitely Polar Bear follows the fractured family of four through a multitude of struggles. Bipolar Cam has lived his life under the unpredictable spell of his manicdepressive episodes. In 1978, after Cam lost another job, Maggie attempts to leave him and take the girls with her. However, following his hospitalization and settlement into a halfway house, Maggie has a slight change of heart. Realizing Cam will never be able to properly provide for them (in spite of coming from a moneyed blueblood family whose relative’s portrait hangs in the Museum of Fine

Art), Maggie applies to and gets into an MBA program in New York. And here is the setup. With Maggie away at school working on her degree, Cam moved into the apartment with his daughters and does as much as he is able to give them a somewhat normal life. Bouts of depression, excessive drinking and chain-smoking combined with reckless driving, slovenly housekeeping, irresponsible parenting, awkward social interaction and so on, become the daily routine of the girls’ childhood. The story has as many, if not more, highs and lows than Cam. Should a movie about a manic depressive be as manic and depressing as its subject? Forbes seems to think so. Infinitely Polar Bear, whose title comes from Faith’s mangling of her father’s condition is not Ruffalo’s best work (see The Normal Heart or The Kids Are All Right for that). The young actresses hold their own in their scenes, while Saldana is the one who comes out the best. Not the worst first film ever, but one that raises doubts about what might come next. theguymag

ased on writer David Lipsky’s book Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself, about the time he spent with the late writer David Foster Wallace during the final days of his 1996 book tour for Infinite Jest, The End of the Tour (A24) opens in 2008 on the day that Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) learns of the death of Wallace (Jason Segel giving a oncein-a-lifetime, Oscar-worthy performance). Twelve years earlier, Lipsky was a writer at Rolling Stone. His first novel (and second book) had just been published, but all the attention in the literary world was being given to Wallace for his epic masterwork. Lipsky pitches a story about Wallace to his Rolling

the Internet. He doesn’t have a girlfriend (although he’d like to have one) and the two Davids’ exchange about “a five minute cup of tea” with Alanis Morissette is pretty priceless. Wallace is a man with a lot of opinions and once he becomes comfortable with Lipsky (they share a Pop-Tart), he opens up to him. There are numerous tense moments – Lipsky is, after all, a journalist, not Wallace’s buddy, and when he raises certain questions, about Wallace’s trademark bandanas, his hospitalization for depression and “suicide watch,” interviewing Wallace’s mother, and his rumored heroin addiction, for example, things get heated. But there are also mo-

At first, the equally socially awkward, “nervous and terrified” duo is wary of the other. Thankfully, the presence of Wallace’s two active black labs are there to help break the ice (and snow). Wallace, a recovering alcoholic, whose “level of fatigue and fuckup quotient” can make him difficult to be around, is popular with and well-liked by his students. Joan Cusack, as Wallace’s Minneapolis escort, also brings some levity to the movie. As previously mentioned, Segel’s performance (on par with what Paul Dano does as Brian Wilson in Love and Mercy), is what gives The End of the Tour its heart and soul and is more than reason enough to see this film. theguymag

Exercise Those Blues Away! BY TOM

BONANTI

o

Depression is a reality that many people deal with on a daily basis. A life threatening illness, the loss of a job, a relationship break-up are all setbacks that can make you down and blue. In time, most recover from the sadness and other negative emotions that accompany such unfortunate human crises. There are many other people who suffer constantly with feelings of desperation, worthlessness, and a sadness so profound that they cannot function. Psychotherapy, support groups, and medication can help tremendously with this form of generalized depression. If you struggle with recurrent depression or a depression which lasts over a week, consult your doctor. Don’t be ashamed to admit that you may have a problem and need help. It’s the first step toward recovery! If you feel depressed, or often get caught up in negativity because of work, relationships, or life in general, here are some practical cognitive strategies that will help you get out of that rut and keep your sunny side up! Maintain an active daily routine. When you’re depressed, it’s easy to withdraw, shut down and stay in bed all day. Instead, set a regular time to rise and shine. Have your clothes laid out, drink your coffee and eat a healthy breakfast. Delay checking and returning pesky e-mails and texts until you get to the office. Incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Many who exercise first thing in the morning before share with us on guymag.net

work report less anxiety, increased energy and a brighter mood all day-long. If you can’t work out in the AM, then try to get away at lunchtime, or hit the gym after work a few days a week. Whenever possible try not to take work home with you after hours. Once you’re home, walk the dog, prepare a healthy dinner, unwind with music, meditation or a favorite TV show. Schedule a regular time to retire and stick to a regimen that allows you to relax gradually so that you can enjoy at least eight hours of uninterrupted slumber. Don’t let negative thoughts control you. Let go of hurtful people and events from your past. Stop ruminating over things in the present that don’t concern you (i.e. a co-worker’s snarky remarks, a perceived snub by a next door neighbor, etc.). As far as the future goes, worrying and fretting can do nothing to make things turn out the way you desire. Stay grounded positively in the present. Make good choices, treat people well and try to find something good in everybody and everything. Treat yourself well. Work, relationships and the daily grind can take their toll on you. Instead of falling into a negative, depressed cycle, try always to have things to look forward to in life. A trip to Starbucks, taking lunch outdoors on a sunny day, reading a good book on your breaks, are all awesome ways to brighten your spirit and feed your soul. Reaching out to others is tough when you’re depressed, but it helps if you keep a steady stream of positive people in your life. Just remember to be one yourself when someone else needs a caring friend or a strong shoulder. Whether you are already receiving professional help for depression, considering it, or just trying to deal with an occasional case of the blues, these cognitive self-help tips can make a difference.
