IT’S A BIRD! IT’S A PLANE! NO, IT’S YOU EXPERIENCING SKYDIVING

o

The most unforgettable and accelerating feat of gravity-defying bravery you will ever have in your lifetime. Skydiving is one of the most daring recreational activities known to man, next to swimming with the sharks and climbing Mount Everest. It is an experience like no other; one that is terrifying and liberating all at the same time. One blogger from TheGreatnzTravelUnravel’s Blog identified ten emotional phases a newbie skydiver goes through from booking to jumping. The first emotional phase is one hurdle that every person who ever contemplated skydiving should do without thought: “Book it so you have to do it.” Most who overcome the initial trepidations and explore the freedom of the fall only have amazing and positive things to say about the experience. The whole sport provides skydivers with a triumphant feeling of accomplishment and valor, which opens the mind to renewed life possibilities. Imagine the wind beneath you as you

30

free-fall from the plane for roughly a minute. Then, to witness the beauty of the vast landscape beneath as far as your eyes can see as you coast down to the earth on the wings of your parachute. Here in Florida, there are multiple skydiving opportunities. The three companies in the tri-county area are: Fort Lauderdale Skydiving (Kiosk at Galleria Mall: 2414 E Sunrise Boulevard Fort Lauderdale FL 33304; 954-794-1210), Skydive Palm Beach (3800 State Road 715 Pahokee FL 33476; 561-JUMP-NOW) and Miami Skydiving Center (14005 SW 127th Street Miami FL 33186; 305-235-3483). Each location offers tandem skydiving for beginnings, which involves being strapped to an expert instructor during the dive. The instructor ensures that the beginner is prepared and safe. They also control the parachute for smooth maneuvering and soft landings. Prices range from about $200 to $400. Depending on the location, you may be able to receive online discounts as well as weekday discounts. Anticipate a booking and/or reservation fee, as well as a cancellation fee. Each skydiving package includes an instructive and proper equipment safety classes beforehand.

BARTENDER OF THE WEEK

Scarfone's Mike DaSilva: Age Is Just A Number BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

At the tender age of 24, Mike DaSilva has broken through the glass ceiling by earning the title of General Manager at the Wilton Manors Italian eatery Scarfone’s Coal Fired Pizza. DaSilva didn’t just start off as General Manager of the restaurant, he worked his way up to the position by cutting his teeth as a server in the restaurant a month after they opened in May of 2014. Within six months, DaSilva earned the prestigious title. “It took me by surprise to be honest,” admits DaSilva. DaSilva’s meteoric rise certainly didn’t come out of left field. It was his continual display of hard work and unwavering dedication to the betterment of the restaurant that solidified his place at the managerial table. The transition from server to General Manager came in baby steps, as restaurant owners delegated DaSilva more and more responsibility. At first, he was given leader-

36

ship duties as a server, which led to his higher ups teaching him about restaurant management. After a persistent display of reliability and competency, he was awarded the coveted position. “I took initiative and worked hard,” recalls DaSilva of his efforts. Hard work is nothing new for the precocious and ambitious young man. Even when DaSilva was still a teenager, he excelled in his work environment. Born and raised in the commuter town of Bridgeport, Connecticut, DaSilva got his first job at the age of 16 as a busboy in a traditional Italian restaurant. There he learned just what it took to survive (and succeed) in a fast-paced environment. Two years after he graduated high school, DaSilva was forced to leave the job because of his competing college schedule. Nonetheless, he immediately found a new job as server in another high volume Italian restaurant.

Mike DaSilva's Favorite Drink

This special drink is Mike DaSilva's favorite. He says “The watermelon martini has always been around but we make it our own by using fresh watermelon. It’s refreshing with the right amount of alcohol but if you have too many it will sneek up on you.”

Watermelon Martini

Recipe: 1 1/4 oz. of Vodka, 1/4 oz. of Triple Sec, 1/2 oz of Watermelon Liqueur, 2 oz. of Watermelon Purée and a splash of sour mix. Place all ingredients in a shaker glass filled with ice, Shake until chilled. Pour contents into a chilled martini glass.

Within a year the restaurant closed down, but a new opportunity presented itself. The same company he was working for as a server owned nightlife establishments in need of bartenders. DaSilva jumped at the opportunity and worked just as hard to learn the ropes in a new environment. Not only did DaSilva learn how to bartend, but he was afforded the opportunity to experience different working environments—a couple of gentlemen’s clubs, a nightclub and a couple of bars. Since then, DaSilva's unrelenting work ethic consistently allowed him to move up in the ranks at future jobs. Throughout the musical chairs his professional life was becoming, his entire immediate family was moving down south from Connecticut. By 2013, his mother, older sister and two younger siblings were living in Delray. In 2014 he realized they needed help so he quickly moved down as well to

assume the role of family patriarch. It was then that he found the job at Scarfone’s. DaSilva doesn’t let the General Manager title get to his head; he still helps out wherever he is needed. During the off-season, you can catch DaSilva six days a week behind the bar at the Italian restaurant. Come in and enjoy 2-for-1 Happy Hour with DaSilva from open to close on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, along with 2-for-1 Happy Hour Friday and Saturday. Please note: Friday and Saturday is bar seating only. And while you’re there, try their authentic Italian cuisine – they don’t just serve pizza.

Tunie's: Making Fort Lauderdale A Healthier Place BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

Tunie’s, Florida’s largest local natural grocery, vitamin and nutrition store, is now open for business in Fort Lauderdale and they’re ready for you to stop by to begin your journey to a healthier lifestyle. Tunie’s mission is to improve the lives of the South Florida community by making healthy food, supplements and nutritional education affordable and accessible to everyone. “We would like to change the mindset that it is unaffordable to be healthy,” says Gail Silverman, Director of Marketing. This is Tunie’s third location in Broward County and each store (Coral Springs, Palm Beach Gardens, Fort Lauderdale) offers convenient and complimentary services to the community. One unique service Tunie’s provides at no cost is its nutritional counseling. Whether you have questions about healthy living or need guidance with dietary restrictions, you can make an appointment or come by the store during walk-in hours to meet with a nutritionist. With over 28,000 products in store, conversing with the on-site nutritionist is a great way to pinpoint what products work best for your individual needs. Another way to learn about products and to gain more information about healthy living is to attend one of the stores' free workshops. Learn about a range of topics like fermentation, smoothies, acupuncture, alternative pet health and weight loss. Each location has routine workshops throughout the month, which are open to the public. Throughout August, the Fort Lauderdale location will host a workshop every Saturday. “We are a local business supporting the

48

community,” reassures Silverman. Tunie’s is a small local company competing with corporate giants like Whole Foods, Fresh Market and Trader Joe's, but none are comparable in terms of services and savings. “We carry all the national name brands,” mentions Silverman. “Pretty much everything and more you would find in a Whole Foods, but at lower prices.” Tunie’s commitment to low pricing isn’t just lip service. The company stands by its low price guarantee policy in which they “will match any published advertised price from other local brick-and-mortar stores." “It’s really nice to have an alternative and offer solutions for healthy living to the community,” adds Silverman. Starting August 1, Tunie’s Fort Lauderdale customers can sign up in store at no cost for the company’s Healthy Rewards Program. Members will receive a weekly newsletter with healthy living tips, recipes and specialty discounts. Members can also go green and opt to receive paperless receipts via email. Moreover, all members can take part in the Freebie Friday promotions that kick off with seven days of giveaways starting August 1. Stop in today for a specialty juice or smoothie and to try the organic salad buffet while you're at it!

Finding Neverland: "Origins" Invades Chicago's Market Days

N

everland parties are known for their elaborate themes and production. Last year’s Market Days event whisked revelers deep into outer space with superstar DJ Boris at the helm, making his debut appearance at a gay circuit party in Chicago. This year, Neverland celebrates Chicago’s Market Days with its fiercest party ever, ORIGINS. Taking place Friday, August 7 from 10 pm-5 am, producers will transform the city’s Circuit Nightclub into a Mayan jungle with over-the-top set designs and performers attired in fashions, costumes and headdresses of ancient tribal cultures. "Market Days draws thousands of gay tourists to Boystown in Chicago,” says Neverland’s founder and Creative Director, Anthony DiFiore. “The challenge for us is to make our Friday night an exceptionally extravagant experience so that it stands out amongst all the weekend’s other events.” We sat down with him to learn more.

dj Isaac Escalante

dj Alain Jackinsky

53

How will you build upon last year's Market Days Gravity party? Anthony DiFiore: Last year, we built a metal structure made out of truss and LEDs. This year, we are trying something totally different. We’re creating a theatrical jungle set. Where did the idea for Origins come from? One of Neverland’s co-owners, Martin Luna, is Mexican of Mayan ancestry, and many members of our creative team are Mexican. They’ve been wanting to do a tribal theme that focuses on fashions and costumes of the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations, because these societies created things of such profound beauty. It’s our way of helping to immortalize ancient Mayan and Aztec fashions and costumes, by recreating and showcasing these pieces with high-quality construction and artisanship. How do Neverland parties compare with the dance festivals that have swept Europe? Neverland is a team of artists, so we’re art-focused, but also a little edgy and very much American. Look at our Ratchet Ball. You just wouldn’t see that in one of the big European brands. WE Party did a money theme, but we had our “Bougie Ball” and got real slang and conceptual. Neverland is very young; all the staff are in their 20s and early 30s. We go to parties, we follow current style, we know what’s going on. We don’t want to create anything that people in our age range can’t identify with.

54

Neverland is also renowned for its theatrics. What will you be showcasing at Origins? We are working on two big performances, one with Shea Coulee and the other with Aurora Sexton. I’ll also point out that since this theme was handpicked by our costume designers, Martin Luna and Raul Redaggio, they are more dedicated than I’ve ever seen them in creating over-the-top looks for the dancers and performers. Will the Neverland go-go dancers be there in all of their wild jungle glory? We’ll have seven go-go dancers for Origins: many of them from Chicago. How can revelers join in on the fun? If you want to dress up, great! If not, come dressed however you want! Circuit is the perfect venue for the party, because in addition to being right in Boystown, there’s a huge dance floor for guys that want to dance and private booths and spaces where people can have drinks and watch the shows on stage. DJs Isaac Escalante and Alain Jackinsky will headline this year’s party together. I saw Isaac Escalante and Alain Jackinsky spin together at Winter Party in Miami. They produced some of the best music of the weekend. Since both are friends of ours and have spun for Neverland individually, I asked them right after the set if they’d be willing to spin together for us at Market Days. Anyone who attended that magical night in Miami will be counting down the days!

August 7 is right around the corner. What’s left to do to make this party a spectacle? Not much, just work our asses off! Are these parties a labor of love for you? The best part about Neverland is that I only bring in people who are the very best at what they do. It’s why you look at our alumni and you see famous names like Alexander Knox (Project Runway), Trixie Mattel, Pearl, and Gia Gunn. I only work with people who are driven and brilliant. When you get a team of passionate people with an united goal, you can do anything. In our case, it’s getting a bunch of artists to design a fun dance party. Not brain surgery, but you’d be surprised how much work it takes! Is there pressure to one-up yourself from Pride? I think of it as more of an exciting challenge. I see today, but I also have my eyes on Neverland in five to ten years from now. I see the potential for what we can become, and there will never come a point when I say, “I can’t top that.” Neverland takes place Friday, August 7 from 10 pm-5 am at Chicago’s Circuit Nightclub (3641 N Halsted). Tickets are on sale now at www. showclix.com/event/origins. They are also available in Boystown at Egoist Underwear (3526 N Halsted Street). Pre-sale: $40 / then $50 / then $60. Genco:

Old World Sandwiches with a Godfather Twist BY TIM

I

f you can’t guess from the name, this is a Godfather movie theme Italian sandwich shop. The décor and the menu are 100% pure Godfather. The owner has an interesting story: He was born and raised in South Philadelphia by a great cook, his Sicilian Mother Angelina. The culinary seed was planted by his mother at the age of 13. He always wanted to open his own eatery, so he attended culinary school in New York State in 1996. After relocating to South Florida, he opened Genco Sandwiches with his son Santino in August of 2012. Every sandwich is made to order with top quality ingredients. Everything is homemade and they offer the freshest bread, baked several times a day. The deli meats are sliced per sandwich with your choice of toppings! At Genco Sandwiches, they want their customers to become friends, to not only love their food, but to feel good from

HART

the warm greeting you get as you walk thru the doors! I was made aware of this place a few years ago (before they changed the hours into the evening). I would order dinner for my staff and for myself on evenings when we stayed working late. That is when I fell in love with the Johnny Fontane – grilled chicken cutlet, caramelized onions, baked bell pepper, pesto mayo and aged provolone ($9). I have never ordered anything else. My colleagues on the other hand have had just about everything else. The shop is located on the north side of Commercial Blvd just over the intercostal. There is seating both inside and outdoors. The décor is totally done in a gangster theme. There are Godfather pictures all over the walls. The restaurant is basically self-serve. You place your order at the counter and get your own beverage and

bus your own table. The menu is peppered with a number of different sandwiches all with Godfather theme named sandwiches. In addition there is a daily specials board with different types of items all with Godfather themed names (“Sinatra” type sandwiches to name one). There are nine different hot sandwiches including the Johnny Fontane. They include the Don Fanucci – breaded chicken cutlet, marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese ($8), the Clemenza – breaded chicken cutlet, broccoli rabe and sharp provolone ($9) and the Paulie – Philly chicken steak sandwich ($8). To complement the assortment of hot sandwiches, there is an equally robust selection of cold sandwiches including: the Sonny – prosciutto , aged provolone and roasted peppers ($9), the Moe Greene (another office favorite) – roasted turkey breast, cole slaw and Russian dressing on

rye ($8) and the Don Vitto – prosciutto, capicola, soppressata and sharp provolone ($9). The special board includes the daily homemade soup (8 oz - $3; 16 oz - $5 and 32 oz - $9). There is an ample selection of chips to compliment the meal. Beverage include all the traditional sodas as well as domestic and imported beer. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. It is a short stroll to the Commercial Street pier, which you can take to walk off your meal. Genco will make you a sandwich you can’t refuse!

The adventure includes meetings with Lost Boys, mermaids, Indians, and the dastardly pirate Captain Hook. The score includes songs “I’m Flying,” “I’ve Gotta Crow,” and “I Won’t Grow Up.” 7:30 p.m. Wick Theatre. 7901 N. Federal Highway. Boca Raton. 33487.

Lookingglass Alice A journey down a rabbit hole ends in a magical world full of Cheshire cats, Red Queens, Mad Hatters, and a bevy of drug symbolism for Alice, one of literature’s most iconic characters. Richard Deon: Paradox and Conformity New York artist Richard Deon was an unruly student intrigued by the defaced American history textbook from his seventh grade class. He added his own doodles of mustaches, eyeglasses, warplanes, and buildings to the pictures to recreate an American history all his own. “Paradox and Conformity” uses this moment in his life as inspiration for a complex exhibition. The imagery evokes impressions of instruction and obedience with surreal compositions. 9:00 a.m. Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery. 3501 SW Davie Rd. Davie. 33314.

Maggie, Danny Collins And The Griswolds BY

GREGG SHAPIRO

oVacation Bad Taste Vacation would have been a more suitable name for Vacation (WB), an offensive attempt at comedy that makes Pixels look like Citizen Kane. A tie-in to the National Lampoon series of the 1980s that resulted in a handful of inexplicably popular movies, Vacation introduces us to a grownup, married, father-of-two Rusty (Ed Helms), a character previously portrayed by Anthony Michael Hall, Johnny Galecki and others. Rusty, a sad-sack pilot for a low-budget airline, lives in Chicago with his long-suffering wife Debbie (Christina Applegate, still working the second-rate Jennifer Aniston routine) and sons James (Skyler Gisondo) and Kevin (Steele Stebbins). James is a sensitive kid who is by no means a gay or trans teen. Yet his cruel younger brother Kevin bullies him relentlessly, taunting James verbally with slurs about his sexual-

ity and gender and physically with slaps, punches and worse. In an attempt to freshen the family summer vacation routine, Rusty makes plans to drive across country in a hideous rented vehicle and bring his family to the Wally World amusement park, the site of a particularly memorable vacation from his own childhood. You can probably imagine where this is going. Along the way, the Griswolds encounter a series of nausea inducing events, including swimming in toxic waste, sorority antics involving binge-drinking and barfing, the unintentional slaughter of a cow, a near-arrest for public indecency and uncomfortable moments in which pedophilia becomes a recurring and repeatedly unfunny punch-line. It’s good to know that cocaine is still as frequently used as it was when the original National Lampoon’s Vacation script was conceived. Helms made his name from the shock factor in the Hangover series, but he deserves better than this. Not even the site of the exquisite Chris Hemsworth, as Rusty’s brother-in-law Stone, parading around in tight-fitting boxer briefs with substantial prosthetic junk, can make this a vacation worth taking.

oMaggie It’s interesting, don’t you think, that Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of the least human (as well as least humane) movie actors, should be cast as Wade, a father protecting his daughter, the titular Maggie (Lionsgate) played by Abigail Breslin, who is infected with the necroambulist (read: zombie) virus, decimating the population of their farming town? Teen Maggie, who ran away from home to protect her father, stepmother Carol (Joely Richardson) and step-sibs, is found and returned to her father’s care. With only six to eight weeks before it is predicted that Maggie will turn into a zombie, Wade, Maggie and Carol (who sent the younger kids to stay with an aunt) navigate the toxic waters. Wade does his part to keep Maggie safe from the hick sheriff and deputy, zombie neighbors and the prying eyes of doctors.

Maggie, meanwhile, tries to make the best of a bad situation, even hanging out with friend Allie (Raeden Greer) and ex-boyfriend Trent (Bryce Romero). But it’s rough going as the virus progresses and the end nears. Schwarzenegger’s restrained performance matches the movie’s muted tones. Breslin continues to develop into an actress with promise. DVD + Digital HD special features include commentary by director Henry Hobson, a deleted scene, a “Making Maggie” featurette, cast and crew interviews and more.

oDanny Collins You know how sometimes you watch a movie and it dawns on you that this movie intends to manipulate your emotions (read: make you cry), but somehow you sign up for it anyway, and by the end you’re bawling? “Inspired by a true story,” Danny Collins (Universal) wants to be that movie and it almost succeeds before it goes too far. Danny (a relatively reserved Al Pacino) has

been a rock star since his teens. He’s sort of a cross between Neil Diamond and Rod Stewart; a singer/songwriter who started off with the best intentions before becoming a walking parody of himself. When he was young, he idolized John Lennon, as he mentions to a musical journalist during an interview early in his career. Now he’s all Las Vegas schlock, a coke snorting cliché in pancake make-up and a waist cincher, playing to crowds of “golden girls” who have a gift for making a bag of licorice last the length of one of his concerts. Blue about an impending birthday, Danny’s mood is lifted considerably when longtime manager and best friend Frank (Christopher Plummer) presents him with a framed 1971 letter to Danny from John Lennon, written at the time the previously mentioned interview was published. It never reached Danny, but it did end up in the hands of a collector, and after that, for a pretty penny, in Frank’s possession. The letter has a life-changing impact on Danny. He goes home to his gated mansion and ends his engagement to much younger fiancée Sophie (Katerina Cas), who’s cheating on him anyway. After three bad marriages, who needs a fourth? Next thing you know, Danny ensconces

74

himself in a hotel in New Jersey with the intention of tracking down and introducing himself to the son who resulted from a one-night stand many years earlier. That son, construction worker Tom (Bobby Canavale), is married to pregnant Samantha (Jennifer Garner) and the father of hyperactive Hope (Giselle Eisenberg). You can probably guess where things are going to go from there. Tom wants nothing to do with Danny, in spite of the fact that any necessary financial assistance Danny could provide is definitely needed. Danny’s attempt to repair this broken relationship is one of two subplots at the heart of the movie. The other is Danny’s ongoing flirtation with plain-Jane hotel manager Mary (Annette Bening doing her best Diane Keaton), something that results in reigniting Danny’s creative spark. As well-intentioned as it is predictable, Danny Collins (the directorial debut of The Guilt Trip screenwriter Dan Fogelman, if that gives you a clue) takes itself a little too seriously as it tugs relentlessly at your heartstrings. Blue-ray+DVD+Digital HD bonus features include a behind-the-scenes featurette and a gallery of Collins’ “Album covers through the years.”

Work Out That Anger: Live Longer! BY TOM

BONANTI

I grew up in a home with a hot tempered Italian father and a stoic German-English BY TOM BONANTI mother. Dad lost his cool regularly, explosively. Mom disapproved of his conduct and let us know that anger was unacceptable. It was meant to be held in silently, bravely and never expressed. As a result of this stellar upbringing I found myself to be a morose young man with a host of anger issues. I’ve come a long way. I’d like to share some things about anger, how it helps you, how it harms you, and how you can handle it in a healthy way.

o

First, anger is not a bad emotion. It can rouse you from complacency, and make you take a stand when you experience injustice. Anger can be healthy if it causes you to confront issues and handle them in an honest way (i.e., dialogue, realistic compromise, etc.). Anger can actually help you think more rationally in times of crisis. It is only when it is held onto and suppressed for long periods of time that it can prove to be explosive, even fatal. Here are a few negative effects of anger. Prolonged and internalized anger can cause all kinds of health hazards. According to physicians and psychologists, the chance of having a major heart attack doubles within one hour of just one short, angry meltdown. In addition, elevated blood pressure during anger puts you at greater risk of stroke by causing blood clots to form, traveling to the brain or causing brain hemorrhage. Anger has been linked to heart disease, type II diabetes, colo-rectal cancer, and an overall weakened and compromised immune system.

o 78

Besides wreaking havoc with your physical health, anger can cause any number of psychological prob-

lems. It has been said that depression is nothing more than anger turned inward. Depression causes you to feel listless, helpless and ultimately hopeless. Anger can also exacerbate feelings of anxiety associated with financial concerns, job performance, and life in general. In addition, harboring hostility takes its toll on friends, family, spouses, and co-workers as one by one they are turned off by your angry behavior. So what can you do about anger in your life? Know your limitations. In the heat of battle, it’s easy to blow up and say things you’ll later regret. Instead, remove yourself from the situation immediately before losing your cool. Breathe deeply and take a walk. Gather your concerns and needs and when you are ready, confront the situation or person clearly and directly without losing control.

o

Exercise and physical activity are great ways to blow off excess steam and reduce stress. Pumping iron, taking a swim, going for a run, practicing martial arts, are all enjoyable and healthy activities that will build muscle, help your heart, and allow you to release anger. For many people who are dealing with anger, it’s a lifelong process of learning how to let go and live peacefully. Practicing yoga can build flexibility and help you to relax. Humor, as long as it isn’t cutting, can lighten and diffuse heated situations. Guided meditation, visualization and deep breathing techniques can help many overcome hostility. And if your anger is still out of control, then have the wisdom to seek professional help. Don’t allow anger to rule your life. Learn to chill and you’ll live longer.

"Don’t allow

anger to rule your life. Learn to chill and you’ll live longer.
