Add Exquisite Lapels To Your Wardrobe

BY JAMEER

Helen Reich has created an innovative way to spruce up any suit jacket or blazer, by adding a unique pop of pizzazz to the lapel. With this simple touch, your sartorial IQ is bound to jump. Her vibrant lapel flower and bow tie pins are a great addition to any modern man’s wardrobe. Wear it as a solo statement piece or have it compliment your pocket square and tie. Either way, it’s a delicate detail that stands out for all of the right reasons. “It’s a good way to dress up a jacket,” assures Reich. “I always say that my lapel flowers are for elegant dressers with distinctive taste.” Reich’s charming lapel accessories are crafted using a Japanese technique called Tsumami Kanzashi. In this Japanese method of fabric flower-making, each petal is carefully designed by hand and assembled to produce an adorable creation. The coveted Japanese tradition was commonly worn by the apprentices of geishas, Maiko, who would use old kimonos to make the elaborate designs. Reich stumbled upon the technique on the web. She became so fascinated with the style that she taught herself the ancient method. “There are little to no books about it,” mentions Reich. “So I had to do a lot of trial and error.” Before crafting miniature masterpieces for men, Reich began incorporating what she learned into the hair accessories she designed for women. A New York garment

BAPTISTE maker caught wind of her designs and commissioned her to create 14 magnolias for his bespoke collection. She enjoyed the task so much that she switched her focus from women’s hair accessories to the flower lapels. As they grew in popularity, she rebranded her company to reflect her new focus. Exquisite Lapels makes beautiful handcrafted flower lapels, bow tie lapels and lapel pin buttons. Reich’s designs are brought to life via her fabric selection, which includes anything from linen to kimono silk and African cotton prints. Whether they are bright and bold or understated, they make for unforgettable accessories. They can be worn on any piece of outerwear and serve as a refined statement piece. “It can blend in with the jacket or stand out,” says Reich. Reich’s designs range from $20 to $25 for bow tie lapel pins and flower lapel pins. Lapel pin buttons start at $7.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

Broward House Aids Walk Team (Photo by Facebook.com)

Broward House:

A Dedicated HIV Social Services Provider by Jameer

o

Twenty-six years ago, HIV remained a mystery to the medical community-at-large, and it was overwhelmingly shunned by the greater population. At a time when so little was known with respect to HIV, Broward House emerged as a beacon of hope. Founded by concerned citizens in 1988, Broward House’s inaugural incarnation was comprised of a 52-bed home for individuals in need of housing and assisted living services. Over the years, it has risen to meet the needs of individuals living with HIV/ AIDS. Today, Broward House is still going strong. The organization offers a multitude of services to help ensure individuals living with HIV/AIDS are empowered to live well. The nonprofit private agency has grown to include an increasing number of services that expand on the assisted living program. They include, but are not limited to, comprehensive care for those affected by the virus as well as those at a heightened risk of contracting HIV. Broward House offers three types of housing services for individuals living with HIV/AIDS. The most notable is their assisted living program. It provides a communal living environment where individuals receive onsite meals daily, around the clock nursing, counseling and transportation. “We provide all-around general support so they can become independent,” says Executive Director Stacy Hyde. “It’s great to

30

baptiste

see someone build up their strength and independence again.” Their two other housing programs—transitional living program and the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) voucher program—provide individuals more autonomy. Each program includes Broward House’s wraparound services: counseling, bus pass and case management. Their case management and medical linkage services are provided to the community to help individuals living with HIV/AIDS receive financial support, if eligible, and proper medical treatment. The organization also provides a substance abuse treatment program and a mental health therapy program, in an effort to help change behaviors and break down barriers that stand in the way of patrons. Moreover, the organization is combating the spread of HIV/AIDS by offering a number of intervention, prevention, outreach and educational programs. Along with their eclectic array of services, Broward House is slated to begin STD testing in September of this year. Hyde believes that offering an extensive range of services will spark the interest of more people within the community. ”We find that the more tests we provide, the more likely people are to get tested,” explains Hyde. BARTENDER OF THE WEEK

Last Call With Bartender David Howell Of Ramrod BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

With one quick glance into the eyes of Ramrod bartender David Howell, it’s easy to become entranced. Little do most bar patrons know that what lies beneath his gorgeous gaze is a rich history of determination, strong family values and some good old-fashioned cowboy charm. The striking bartender was born and raised in an upper middle class suburb of Edmond, Oklahoma. His native Oklahoman parents may have settled in a suburban area, but their roots started far away from the picket fences and tree-lined streets around which he grew up. Howell’s father came from a farming family and his mother belonged to a family of ranchers. Both family traditions were a constant in Howell’s upbringing. As far back as he can remember in his childhood, Howell worked on his grandfather’s farm with both his grandfather and dad. The trio would tend to the cattle and bale hay for the winter. While he was in the care of his mother’s side of the family, Howell enjoyed roping, saddle bronc riding and bareback bronc riding—all activities you’d find front and center at a typical rodeo. Howell identi-

34

fied as a cowboy growing up and loved competing in the rodeo, especially in bareback bronc riding. “I did it all for fun,” asserts Howell. “I was never pressured into doing anything.” Howell’s exciting childhood wasn’t limited to farm work. He also took an interest in basketball at the budding age of six. It was a school activity he picked and he later grew into the sport with a little help from his height. As a teen, Howell made the decision to follow in his father’s footsteps as a heavy machine operator. “When I was 13, my father put me on a bulldozer and said, ‘Here you go,’” Howell recalls. During summer breaks, Howell headed to work with his father learning how to operate heavy machinery while constructing highways and bridges. “It was fun,” mentions Howell. “What other kid can get on a piece of machinery that weighs 50 tons?” By the time he was 16, Howell’s headstrong personality and unwavering ambition led him to an astounding acquisition. While most teens his age were just beginning to enter the

David Howell's Favorite Drink This special drink is David Howell's favorite. He says “It's a Jager Bomb with ice and is served as a drink not a shot. One of my friends in Oklahoma introduced me to it and it was pretty much all we drank."

workforce, Howell had saved enough money from his past three years of work to purchase his own 320-acre cattle farm. “I wanted something of my own to finish growing up on,” remembers Howell. He wasn’t in it alone. Howell’s parents supported his decision and even relocated from the suburbs to live on their son’s farm. Howell managed to finish high school, while maintaining the farm and working in construction. Following graduation, Howell started a construction business with his father. The two traveled to different states working on highways and bridges. By age 20, Howell’s parents moved out onto their own farm and Howell picked up yet another incredible activity: drag car racing. Twenty-five marked a pivotal age for Howell. The economy’s downturn forced him to sell his farm and downsize. Around this time, Howell also underwent a sexual awakening of sorts. By 27, Howell entered and won Tulsa Mr. Leather 2007. In 2008, he took home the top honors at Oklahoma Mr. Leather. Howell later placed 26th in the International Mr. Leather competition and made lifelong

friends in the process. “The competitions were a lot of fun,” recalls Howell. “I ended up doing a lot of fundraising for the community.” While he was entering and placing in competitions, Howell continued to run the business with his father. One snowy day in 2011, however, he came home frustrated from work and asked his boyfriend if he wanted to move to Florida. Three months later, the couple found themselves in the Sunshine State. Within a month of working at Leatherwerks in Ramrod, Howell was offered a job as a bartender. And he hasn’t looked back since. “I love it down here,” says Howell. Catch up with the cocktail-slinging cowboy at Ramrod Bar.

Fall Fashion Takes Its Cue from Summer Solids BY

MICHAEL DAVIS

With New York’s legendary Fashion Week heading to Manhattan’s Skylight at Moynihan Station in Midtown and Skylight Clarkson Square in SoHo from September 10-17, we look back at the Men’s Fashions presented this spring in Milan. Solid color and flawless accessories prove that men have nothing to lose and lots to gain by putting on their "good" clothes. Naked is nice, but fashion forward never goes out of style. 44

TRAVEL

What Happens in Vegas... BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

Temptation Sundays At Luxor Hotel & Casino Photo: (luxor.com)

54

Las Vegas is one of the most highly soughtafter travel destinations in the world. Whether you’ve seen stars galavant about the city's streets on the big screen or you’ve dreamed about becoming a millionaire with one flick of a slot machine handle, we've all come to think of it as the freewheeling city of neon lights, casinos and showgirls. Over time, it has become known as the home of quickie marriages and salacious encounters, allowing it to live up to its nickname—Sin City. Its reputation as an uninhibited party destination has lured in herds of high rollers and party-goers for decades. And as the years roll by, the casinos only get bigger. With all of the glitz and glam, the destination surprisingly failed to attract any major gay venues or events. Until now. A growing number of gay events are making their way around Las Vegas, and in the process, they are attracting international crowds. Moreover, the grandiose resorts that rarely twinkled with the presence of a gay soul are now being packed to capacity with individuals that identify with the LGBT community.

Luxor Hotel & Casino

Photo: (luxor.com)

oLuxor Hotel & Casino One such gay event that has made Las Vegas their second home is Gay Days, Inc. The nationally recognized brand has been successfully celebrating Gay Days in Orlando since 1991 and as of 2012 has added Sin City to their list of party destinations. This year’s celebration will be hosted at the Luxor Hotel and Casino (3900 S Las Vegas Boulevard Las Vegas NV 89119; 702-262-4000). The event includes four amazing days of endless pool parties from September 10 – 13. Registered Gay Day guests staying at the Luxor Hotel receive complimentary admission to each pool party. Corbin Fisher models will be on deck to keep the party going in true Sin City fashion. The party continues to rage on in the wee hours of the morning at Las Vegas’ premier dance spot, Piranha Nightclub (4633 Paradise Road Las Vegas NV 89169; 702-379-9500). The quaint two-story club boasts theme nights, drag shows and sensational go-go boys. Gay Days Las Vegas guests wearing a pool band receive free entry and free shuttle service to and from the host hotel and club. In between the pool parties and evening extravaganzas, attendees can visit the Gay Days expo in the Luxor Convention Center. On all four event days, businesses and different organizations will be handing out samples and prizes.

oMGM Grand Hotel & Casino Another big event that is transforming Las Vegas into the new gay playground is Evolve Vegas NYE. This New Year’s Eve extravaganza debuted last year and rung in the new year with an over-the-top soiree. Partygoers from across the globe receive first-class treatment as they experience a NYE bash like no other. The three-day event was the only gay NYE celebration on the Vegas Strip. All guests had the pleasure of staying at the newly renovated MGM Grand Hotel and Casino (3799 S Las Vegas Boulevard Las Vegas NV 89109; 702-891-1111). Plus, they were constantly whisked away to events specifically crafted for the Evolve Vegas NYE experience. 55

Desert Rose Resort

In the first level package, guests were able to meet and greet stars from RuPaul’s Drag Race. The following day, patrons attended Zumanity, a stunning Cirque du Soleil show. Before the clock struck 12, guests enjoyed a private twilight tour around the city. Evolve Vegas NYE is gearing up for New Year’s Eve 2016, and if it’s anything like their first event, attendees are sure to have another unforgettable experience.

oDesert Rose Resort If you are looking for a more subtle way to enjoy Sin City, the gay-friendly Desert Rose Resort (5051 Duke Ellington Way Las Vegas NV 89119; 702-739-7000) might be for you. The resort is located 1.5 blocks from the Vegas strip, so you are removed from the action but not too far away. The vibe is serene and comfy and the accommodations are affordable. A great place to grab a bite to eat off the Strip, whether morning, noon or night, is Addiction at Rumor Hotel (455 East Harmon Avenue Las Vegas NV 89169; 702-369-5400). Also, there are three Luxor Hotel restaurants that directly advertise to the LGBT commu56

RESORT

Bask In The Lap Of Luxury At the Biltmore Miami J B BY AMEER

B

uilt in 1926, the Biltmore Miami has been the pinnacle of pure elegance and extravagant glamor since the Roaring Twenties. The Mediterranean style hotel has a history of wild, decadent parties and lavish affairs, but it also served a hospital during World War II and was the first location for the University of Miami medical center. By 1973, the esteemed building was owned by the Miami-Dade County city of Coral Gables. It remained vacant for ten years until the city put $55 million into the building to restore it back to its former glory. In 1987, the hotel reopened to rave reviews and it reclaimed its former status as the signature Coral Gables hotel. Today, the hotel is classified as a National Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places and still serves as a luxury retreat. There is nothing understated about the property. Pulling up to the building, you are immersed in beauty from the impeccably manicured lawns to the Giraldainspired tower that extends as far as the eye can see. And let’s not forget about the inside. Massive marble pillars that seamlessly connect to the ornate cathedral ceilings occupy each common area. The sprawling

grounds include lush gardens, spectacular courtyards with water fountains, a professional golf course and an exquisite pool with Greek statues lining one side. The hotel has two fine-dining restaurants, a pair of casual cafes, a snack diner, a bar and a private dining salon. There are multiple spa arrangements including massages, body treatments and facials. And there’s also an onsite fitness center. Each room offers a stunning view of the city, golf course or pool. The simple elegance of each room is magnified by a clean, sleek aesthetic. Each is outfitted with comfortable European bedding and beautiful orchids that add a touch of charm. The Biltmore has been known to be extremely welcoming to the gay community and The Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce routinely holds events in the hotel's luxurious event spaces. The hotel has also shown their support for the gay community by publicly encouraging same-sex ceremonies to be held at the establishment before marriage equality was legalized in the state.

RECREATION

THE LATEST SPORTING CRAZE

o

Pop Tennis is a sport gaining considerable traction throughout the United States, as the refreshing and fun-loving recreational activity is decidedly easier to master than classic tennis. What makes Pop Tennis so much easier than its more popular counterpart is that everything about the sport has been reduced in size. The court size is more intimate, the paddle is shorter than an average tennis racquet and the net is lower than the ones used in tennis. These integral (and defining) changes coupled with an underhand serve and a deadened tennis ball—a tennis ball punctured with a hypodermic needle— make the game less rigid and demanding than the classical form of tennis. Leaders of the sport claim that Pop Tennis is a great introductory option for youth who want to learn how to play tennis, as they are able to master their stroke much faster. They also insist that older adults can enjoy playing the sport long after any wane in their physical fitness. As everything is smaller, players don’t have so much area to cover on the court, which allows young kids and adults who don’t have massive amounts of energy or stamina to

60

BY JAMEER

BAPTISTE

play the sport with ease and comfort. If something about the sport sound familiar to you, you are on the right track. You may have heard of Pop Tennis before, as the name is just a rebranding of Paddle Tennis. Created by Reverend Frank Peter Beal, Paddle Tennis has seen some changes since its 1898 beginnings. It wasn’t until 2014, however, that the name was changed deliberately by Leo Recagni to help the sport permeate into the mainstream. Pop stands for “Popular,” which mirrors the very same sensibility and use in pop art, pop entertainment and pop culture. Two of the few things to remain the same from classic tennis are the scoring rules and technique. However, the slight in-game adjustments and characteristic “Pop” sound made by the crash collision of the deadened ball against the soft racquet make the game new and exciting. To try your hand at Pop Tennis in South Florida, visit the South Florida Pop Tennis website: www.meetup.com/SouthFloridaPopTennis. Here you can become a member of the newly established (June 22, 2015) group and attend a Pop Tennis demo. The next Pop Tennis demo will be held on Pompano Beach on Wednesday, September 16 at 4:30 pm.

SCREEN SAVOR

Fantastic Flops, Flash Fizzles BY

GREGG SHAPIRO

oFantastic Four It’s only been 10 years since the previous Fantastic Four movie crashed and burned. The new reboot, creatively and aptly titled Fantastic Four (20th Century Fox/Marvel) is so incredibly bad, it’s enough to consider calling for a comic book movie moratorium. You have to wonder what would make talented young actors such Miles Teller (Whiplash ), Jamie Bell (Billy Elliott, Snowpiercer), Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) and Kate Mara (House of Cards, American Horror Story), want to get involved with such a cursed franchise. After all, Fantastic Four 2 has been “announced” for 2017. Did they see something in this embarrassing mess that many of us will have missed? The seemingly endless set-up begins in 2007 when middle-school student Reed is taunted by his teacher and almost all of his classmates for his bold scientific ideas. Keep an eye on Ben, his one school friend, who will turn out to be Reed’s most enduring friendship. At a high school science fair where Reed (Teller) and Ben (Bell) make an impression with their bio-matter transporter thingamajig, Reed is courted by scientist

Franklin (Reg E. Cathey) and his daughter Susan (Mara) with a scholarship to Baxter, their version of a wizard’s academy. Reed is soon joined by the socially inept Victor Von Doom (Toby Kebbell) – can you guess who the villain of this story might be?

– on a project to create a full-scale version of his invention. Also tagged on is Storm’s drag-racing son Johnny (Jordan). Impetuous and bored as only young scientists can be, Reed, Johnny and Victor decide to take the Quantum Gate transporter for a spin, after Ben is invited to join them. You don’t have to have a scientific mind to imagine the trauma that befalls them. One is left behind in another dimension, while the other three are forever transformed into super-beings. Of course, their violent return to earth also results in Susan’s transformation, as well. Wanting nothing more than to be restored to their former selves, plans are made to return to the other dimension to search for a cure. However, the government and military, represented by gum-chomping Harvey (Tim Blake Nelson), have other plans for them. If all of this sounds like 10 pounds of sh*t stuffed into a one pound bag, you heard it right. Why did it take three writers – director Josh Trank along with Simon Kinberg and Jeremy Slater – to write this dismal and laughable screenplay? One can only hope that this summer’s overload of comic book movies, some more successful than others, is a sign that this madness has run its course.

oRicki And The Flash It’s important when you watch the disappointing Ricki and the Flash (Sony Pictures) to remember that director Jonathan Demme is the man behind such classic films as Melvin and Howard, Stop Making Sense, Philadelphia, The Silence of the Lambs, Married To the Mob and Something Wild. Whereas screenwriter Diablo Cody, who achieved great acclaim with Juno, is responsible for the epic disasters Jennifer’s Body, Young Adult and Paradise. Talk about not living up to your potential. Only moderately better than the abysmal performance she gave in the unwatchable Mamma Mia!, Meryl Streep gets to sing again as the titular character in Ricki and the Flash. She also gets to be almost as unlikeable as she was in the equally unwatchable August: Osage County, although she does leave most of the scenery un-nibbled.

Ricki & the Flash

(Courtesy of sf.funcheap.com.com)

Ricki, aka Linda, abandoned husband Peter (Kevin Kline, reuniting with Streep for the first time since Sophie’s Choice), their young daughter and two young sons, to pursue her dreams of being a rock star. How’d that work out for her? Ricki and the Flash have been the house band at a bar in Tarzana since 2008! An unexpected family reunion is in the cards for Ricki when she finds out that troubled daughter Julie (Streep’s daughter Mamie Gummer) attempted suicide after being left by her husband. Reluctantly returning to Indianapolis, Ricki tries her hand at being a mother again, with alternately devastating and surprising results. Of course, politically conservative antiObama rocker Ricki also has to make peace with grown sons Joshua (Sebastian Stan), who is engaged to marry Emily (Hailey Gates), and Adam (Nick Westrate), who is openly gay, a sore subject for Ricki. What a tragic waste of a cast, including an unrecognizable Charlotte Rae as the dottering grandmother, Audra McDonald as Peter’s second wife, and Rick Springfield as Ricki’s paramour and band-mate. The sad fact is that Ricki and The Flash barely flickers.

Italian for Royalty

Marola’s Trattoria offers the area’s best authentic, handcrafted Italian flavors and the highest level of hospitality in a warm family atmosphere. This place is old school with a staff that makes certain you enjoy your meal. The atmosphere is very pleasant. The tables are not right on top of each other allowing you to stretch out with plenty of room to enjoy your meal. Plus, there is plenty of parking! This is one of my higher-end weekend Italian treats. In case you couldn't tell, I really like this place. Guests are treated consistently from visit to visit. The menu is chock ful of classic Italian dishes, with a specials menu that has additional items from which to choose. There is also a very capable wine menu to further accent your special evening. The dinner menu starts with a choice of appetizers including Fried Mozzarella Sticks - Golden Fried Mozzarella Cheese

My favorite is the Grilled Calamari served over Summer Mediterranean Salad and drizzled with "chimichurri" ($13) available only on the specials menu. Moving to the soups, salads and pizza, they have a nice Caprese - Fresh Mozzarella, Tomatoes and Basil with Fresh Roasted Peppers ($11) which is a great starter from the specials menu. Next up are the pasta and entrée listings. The pastas are meals all to themselves. The pastas include Fettuccine Alfredo with Chicken ($19), Penne Alla Vodka - Tomatoes, Peas, Pancetta (Italian bacon), Cream, Onions and Vodka ($17), Lasagna - Layers of Pasta with Meat Sauce, Bechamel and Italian Blended Cheeses ($17) and

Gnocchi Al Tre Formaggi - Housemade Fresh Potato Dumplings tossed with Three Cheese Sauce ($17). The entrees are comprised of Chicken Francese - Wine, Butter and Lemon Sauce ($20), Veal Francese - Wine, Butter and Lemon Sauce ($21), Chicken Parmigiana Baked with Marinara Sauce and Mozzarella ($20), Shrimp Scampi - Served with Angel Hair Primavera ($23) and Zuppa Di Pesce Shrimp, Clams Mussels, Calamari, and Fresh Fillet of Fish over Linguine (Red or White) ($27) plus plenty more. I have had them all and they are all delicious. After your meal, treat yourself to an espresso or coffee and an Italian desert. The restaurant offers a separate lunch menu and robust catering selections. The word “Trattoria” is derived from the Latin, Littarae Tractoriae. In olden times, when members of royalty traveled, mes-

sengers were sent ahead to arrange for the arrival of the royal party with letters, called Littarae Tractoriae, to inquire about the best available food and lodging at each stop of the journey. Next time you’re out journeying, make a stop at Marola’s Trattoria!

Culture Club The greatest hits tour for one of the 1980s notable LGBT bands will include all of the popular hits that made Boy George

and his crew so famous. Expect to hear such new wave singles as “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya,” “Karma Chameleon,” and “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?” Boy George has had quite a few years without the band: he wrote the musical Taboo loosely based on his life, served a time in prison for cocaine possession and false imprisonment, and even attempted (but failed) to appear on the final series of the UK show Celebrity Big Brother. 8:00 p.m. Bayfront Park Amphitheater. 301 N. Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

Incubus/Deftones Incubus’ 1999 album Make Yourself made the band, as well. It reached multi-platinum sales and garnered the hard rock band commercial success. They’ve released a greatest hits album titled Monuments and Melodies and experimented with solo careers. This year’s summer tour features American alternative metal band Deftones, who are about to release their newest album Kerrang! this fall. 6:15 p.m. Perfect Vodka Amphitheatre. 601-7 Sansburys Way. West Palm Beach. 33411.

“Weird Al” Yankovic Music satirist “Weird Al” Yankovic has somehow remained relevant for almost four decades in the industry. That might be because his fun send-ups of both popular music and popular music videos include equal amounts wit and sophomoric humor to appeal to a wide range of demographics. His latest album Mandatory Fun was his first numberone album, proving that the guy’s still got it. His concerts are known for utilizing the same costumes seen in his wacky videos— expect to see the “Fat” costume, the bizarre Lady Gaga “Perform this Way” frock, and, of course, something “Tacky.” 8:00 p.m. Broward Center for the Performing Arts. 201 SW 5th Ave. Fort Lauderdale. 33312.

Sublime American ska punk band Sublime found major commercial success in 1996 when their self-titled third album was released, two months after then lead singer Bradley Nowell’s death from a heroin overdose. The album included the hit single “What I Got,” their most popular single still to this day. The band has sold over seventeen million albums worldwide and is considered one of the most popular ska bands of all time. Opening is Southern California quartet Rebelution. 6:00 p.m. Bayfront Park Amphitheater. 301 N. Biscayne Blvd. Miami. 33132.

FITNESS

Stay Fresh! Stay Strong! BY TOM

BONANTI

D

o you ever feel like you’ve got a case of the “blahs” when you go to the gym? Ever feel like your heart just isn’t into one more set of seated military presses or walking lunges? Whatever happened to the animal intensity that used to possess you the moment you headed out to the gym? What about those recent aches and pains that seem to keep you from training like a beast? You are probably experiencing a common phenomenon known as cumulative micro-trauma, otherwise referred to as overtraining. The term “cumulative micro-trauma” may sound technical, but it really sums things up accurately. When you train intensely, without proper and regular rest intervals, whether it is for a sport, or with weights, or doing lots of cardio, or all of the above, you are going to overdo things. Many tiny tears develop (micro-trauma) in your muscle fibers as well as in the connective tissue of the tendons and ligaments as you place them under the constant strain (cumulative) of exercise. Simply put, over-training occurs when you train too intensely over long periods of time with no time out for muscle rest and recovery. If you are constantly pounding muscle groups through exhausting routines, your body and brain cannot produce the chemicals needed for fiber repair and growth. Muscle soreness that won’t abate, stiff joints, headaches, even nausea occur physically. A generalized apathy and burnout are common psychological symptoms of people who over-train. Training like this is really an exercise in futility. Research shows that training 3 to 4 hours per day 5 to 6 days a week, produces no greater benefits than when training is limited to only 1 to 1.5 hours 3 times per week.

76

Here are some simple guidelines to help you stay fresh and strong and avoid the phenomenon of cumulative micro-trauma.

Periodize your training sessions. This means simply that you train different muscle groups on different days and never train the same muscle group more than twice a week.

Cycle lighter training sessions between heavy duty workout days. Progressively increase or pyramid your weights. Don’t try to lift all the weight all the time.

Get enough complex carbs in your diet for energy and sufficient protein to aid muscle recovery and growth.

Make sure to get enough sleep (8 hours per night is a start) and allow yourself at least 1 to 2 days off from the gym per week. It’s during the time that you rest that your muscles actually experience a peak growth phase.

No matter how judiciously you train, a certain degree of muscle soreness or pain may be experienced after a workout, usually at the onset of a new program or after a prolonged layoff. This is referred to as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness or DOMS and it will dissipate within two days of that initial push. Muscle soreness or inflammation like this may be due to a reduction in blood flow to the muscle and an accumulation of waste by-products like lactic acid. Moving around, stretching, massage, resting, as

well as drinking water can take care of this kind of soreness easily and efficiently. Never be afraid to push yourself to achieve superior results, just don’t overdo it! And yes, there is more to life than working out!
