BY DIEGO WYATT

BOTTOM SHAMING: IT'S A THING JUST RELAX, TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND ARCH YOUR BACK, DAMMIT!

E

very week, there seems to be some brand-spanking shiny new way for gay men to classify themselves with another label. The usual suspects are beginning to read like a Who’s Who list of exhibitors at the local zoo: bear, otter, wolf, cub, unicorn. Whatever. None of the aforementioned (or intentionally overlooked) attributes get quite as much attention or use as top and bottom. These opposing polarities give off the magnetic energy required to keep the world afloat for many, but they have long served as a point of contention among others. Through the eyes of many, tops and bottoms exist at two ends of the spectrum in terms of masculinity. Tops are often seen as domineering, macho men, while bottoms are viewed as submissive and dainty. These stereotypes are reinforced in everything from media and television portrayals to adult films. The use of the terms “top” and “bottom” dates back decades, but somewhere down the line, classifying oneself (or being classified) as the receptive partner in a sexual relationship translated into something completely different. Now more than ever it seems as if the “bottom” label has narrowly invaded insult territory. It is often used to describe a feminine or flamboyant gay man regardless of sexual proclivities, and it is more often than not used by someone who identifies

14

along the LGBTQ continuum. The fallout of bottom-shaming rears its ugly head in a number of ways. It defines individuals based on sexual relationships and preferences, further reinforcing the idea that the lives of gay men revolve around sex. It demeans the character of others based on silly and sophomoric judgments based on something that is no one's business to begin with. Moreover, isn’t the whole top-bottom dichotomy merely a parody of heterosexuality with a dash of patriarchy thrown in for good measure? Curiously enough, being a bottom equates to being a woman to many gay men. Some even refer to their own (or another man's) nether regions using words typically reserved for the lady parts on a woman. It's confusing. It's messy. It's downright bizarre. It is also an example of longstanding notions that women are somehow inferior to men in size, strength, and importance. To combat this bottom bias, more folks are adopting sex-positive attitudes, steering clear of buying into the top-bottom labels, and having honest and open conversations about sex and the relationship dynamics that go along with it. Whether you’re on the giving or receiving end of the stick—so to speak—is a mere formality. You like what you like and shouldn’t spend time looking down on yourself or others for the same. So, the next time you’re bent over in the throes of passion grunting and squealing for dear life, just remember: It isn't always better to give than to receive.

DUMBLONDE

POP MUSIC'S LATEST DYNAMIC DUO TAKES CENTER STAGE

Y

ou may recognize the pair of blonde bombshells pictured above. They are Danity Kane alums Aubrey O’Day and Shannon Bex. After fleeing the ranks of the fallen girl group, the two joined forces destined to make this match stick. The twosome’s sound is a far cry from the sultry sound for which they were once revered. Gone are the thumping mid-

tempos and 808-heavy bangers in favor of bubble gum hooks and dance-worthy baselines. This shift is also apparent in the group's styling choices. Dumblonde currently has two singles burning up the digital charts, “White Lightning” and “Dreamsicle.” The deliciously catchy pop numbers show the world different sides of O’Day and Bex—creatively and vocally. Both videos sent social media into a tizzy, as fans around the world tuned in to see what the duo had to offer. O'Day and Bex did not disappoint. The duo's selftitled debut is due out September 25.

Southern Comfort. This week, news that the largest transgender conference in the US will be held in Fort Lauderdale made its rounds. The 25th Annual Southern Comfort Conference will take place from September 29 through October 3. The networking and learning symposium will attract hundreds from around the world. There will also be a Conference Marketplace where visitors can purchase merchandise.

Cazwell, "The Biscuit." Presented by the gay social app Hornet, openly gay rapper Cazwell unveiled a steamy video for "The Biscuit." The Middle Eastern-inspired offering was done in true Cazwell fashion, meaning plenty of go-go boys in thongs, booty shaking and the rapper's signature style are on display. Of the hotly anticipated video, Cazwell notes that it "might potentially be controversial." No kidding.

funny face WORDS BY DIEGO WYATT PHOTOS BY DENNIS DEAN

cover model craig moody isn't just another pretty face. the accomplished actor and native of fort lauderdale has his sights set on world domination. HERE, THE STAR OF ISLAND CITY STAGE'S SHORTS GONE WILD 3 TALKS CROSSING OVER, ACTING OUT AND THE POWER OF MADONNA. who's laughing now? 22

Tell us about your transition from modeling to acting. I never thought that I’d be an actor. I never aspired to do it. I started really getting into training and was getting buff and everyone started telling me that I should model. Time and time again, photographers would ask if I’m an actor. At the time, I was thinking it was just my personality. Now I see how it all ties together. David Vance, who’s a legendary photographer, messaged me out of the blue. We met and spoke before shooting together. During that time, I vented my frustrations about being a model. I wondered to myself why I was not doing bigger things. David has worked with movie stars and said that he saw something in me that he sees in them. So I thought, why not? I decided to jump right in the deep end.

8 different plays is tough. The stage is the classroom because there’s no take two or take three. I like that challenge, because I feel like every time you do this, you’re expanding. And that’s life in general. Life is an evolution. Does acting require a distinct skill set compared to modeling? When I’m acting, I don’t think at all. I’m just feeling. When I’m modeling, I’m aware of everything. Model Craig is very different from actor Craig. I think actor Craig is a lot closer to the real Craig.

I THINK I THRIVE IN DRAMA. I AM ATTRACTED TO THAT.

How did you get involved in Shorts Gone Wild? Andy Rogow, who’s the creative director of Shorts Gone Wild, saw me in a show. He wanted me to audition for Octopus, which he had a really hard time casting because it was a complex show and had some controversial moments. It was about finding the right actors for that, so I was involved with Island City for Octopus. During that show, Shorts Gone Wild 2 came among. I did that and then I did Octopus. Now, I’m back for Shorts 3.

What’s the most difficult thing about performing the live show? What can be challenging with Shorts is that it’s done in a random order. The audience picks a number out of a hat and you are that character. You don’t know when it’s coming, but you have to snap into it. The piece may be really dramatic and emotional so you have to be that, or you’re really funny and over the top and slapstick and you don’t see it coming. Random order and snapping in and out of different characters in eight

Your physique gets a lot of attention, sometimes more than your acting chops. How does that make you feel? A hot body in Miami is a dime a dozen. I know it gets attention, but I use it in a productive way. I don’t go on Wilton Drive every weekend and take my shirt off, because to me that’s superficial. Some people are intimidated by that or just attracted to it. This is a whole package, but I hope that when they take a look they see value and something of substance to give back in the form of talent, personality, and a sense of humor.

You’ve only been acting for a short period of time, but you’ve had success and great reviews. Who inspires you? As a performer, Madonna’s my rock. I started to embrace that performer side of myself in modeling. When I started acting, I tried to approach it like modeling and that wasn’t enough. When I watch her, I see that in her. She’s talented in a way that people can’t understand. What she does is express herself in her movements and in her body. Madonna is very unique. What’s one role you’d love to play in the future? I think I thrive in drama. I am attracted to that. I wasn’t really into theatre.

What’s your take on being an openly gay actor in a business built on smoke and mirrors? I don’t think anyone should define themselves by any one aspect. Sexuality doesn’t define you. It’s your business. At the same time, I don’t think it should be hidden or something to be ashamed of. As a kid, when I saw gay people on television, they were stereotypes. They were over the top and flamboyant. Then shows like Will & Grace came along in the ‘90s and gave a better balance. I don’t define myself by it, and I don’t think I should be pigeonholed for it. I want kids growing up to have someone to look to and say. 'I can be like him.’ If I was a kid and saw Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, that would be so monumental for me. I would see that I can have the kid, the marriage and the career. I would want my sexuality to be seen in a positive way. I want people to be entertained and attracted to me. I’d also want them to know that about me and not be held back by it. You've done some nude modeling and even went on stage in the buff. Aren't you afraid of those images resurfacing one day? I’m not ashamed of it, I see it as art. If it’s relevant to the story, I’ll pose nude. I have no problem with it. Personally, I don’t enjoy being naked in front of people. If I did, I’d go be a stripper and make a lot more money than I do at my job. Look at all of the traditional paintings and statues. The human body is beautiful. It’s a performance for me. When I look at the modeling stuff, that’s a performance. When I am acting, that’s a performance. I

don’t want to be labeled as anything. If I hit it big, all that’s coming out. Does that mean nothing gratuitous? I’ll play into it, but if it’s gratuitous I am not interested. Everything I do, I want to progress me as an actor. I don’t want to be Craig the muscle actor or Craig the naked actor or Craig the gay actor. I’m Craig—an actor. Do you often get labeled? We always want to label things, especially in the gay world. He’s a jock, he’s a bear, he’s a this. None of us is one-dimensional, but everyone wants to box everyone else in. Let’s flash forward to Craig at 45. What do you want to have accomplished then? I feel like I have a light to shine in the form of talent, personality, something to say and inspiring people. I’m hoping that at that time, that has happened. I would like to be into some movies and things I am proud of. I’m proud of the things I’ve done, but I really do think there’s a lot to come. I want to be established and making a living off of this. I also want to have progressed tremendously as an artist.

PHOTO: TRACY MENDY

As a gay, I knew Evita because of Madonna and Best Little Whorehouse in Texas because of Dolly. The type of movies that I love are those stylized, raw gritty pieces. It’s ironic because my personality is bubbly and fun. When I do the stuff that’s over the top and slapstick in the shows, it’s my least favorite. It’s because when I channel a dramatic character, I go into a deeper place. I would play a superhero because of my body and because it would make a million dollars, but what I’d really want to do is something grittier.

Catch Craig in Shorts Gone Wild 3 until September 6 at Empire Stage, before the show moves to the Fillmore in Miami Beach. For ticketing information, visit www.islandcitystage.org. T.S. MADISON

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO

Hysterical social media starlet and rising trans icon T.S. Madison isn't known for pulling punches. The South Miami-native recently returned home to visit her mother and we caught up with the diva to discuss Caitlyn Jenner, her new show and her unforgettable catchphrases. BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

How was it transitioning long before the mainstream really understood what that meant? Transitioning was different from now. It was a process from gay boy to drag and then so on. Yes, you are strictly born in the wrong body, but back then it was more of a process. I started officially transitioning when I was 18-years-old. How did you find your way to Atlanta? I moved to Atlanta in 2002. Sometimes you get stuck in certain situations hanging around certain people and you really don’t see anything outside of the box that you are in. So my only goal was to leave Miami. You often credit your current accomplishments to sex work. Tell us about that. I became an Internet escort. I’m not ashamed of it and don't have any regrets about it, because it’s part of my story. From someone who started with nothing and was considered a whore and a prostitute, I was able to buy a house worth $450,000. You have some of the most memorable catchphrases of our time. How did they come about? It all just happened naturally. They just came out of my mouth. Out of the blue, people started gravitating to me. When I saw that I had the attention of the world, it became my duty to speak about things that have always troubled me, things that I went through and things that are happening now. What do you think about how far transgender rights have come? This is the year that transgender has been more televised, but there has been a lot going on with transgender rights that hasn’t been talked about. If you’ve done an injustice to our community, I’m going to call you out. Especially if you’re a celebrity. Let’s add Caitlyn Jenner into the equation. You’ve been an outspoken advocate for her. Why? When people ask about trans now, they aren’t asking about Laverne Cox.

They are asking about Caitlyn Jenner. You know why they are asking about Caitlyn? Because in front of all these people, she was Bruce and people saw her story, which makes it more intriguing. It’s bigger than me; it’s bigger than all the girls in the spotlight right now. And to those who disagree, walk a day in her shoes before you judge. How does your story differ from that of Laverne Cox or Janet Mock? There are people that have been following me for ten years ever since I started my YouTube page, even before Facebook started. They have seen me grow and change, which makes my story a little more unique. It’s no shade to anyone else in the spotlight, but people have only heard of Janet Mock’s story and Laverne Cox’s story. They haven’t seen it first hand. Tell us about your new World of Wonder show. My show Live, Loud & In Color will showcase my relationships in the transgender community, but mainly focus on my business interactions. Everyone has to work and everyone has bills to pay, it doesn’t matter if you are black, white, trans, gay or whatever. You have to live. I can do it all and I just happen to be trans. You’ve also written and self-published a book, A Light Through The Shade: An Autobiography of a Queen. What motivated you to tell your story? It’s raw and gritty. I just can’t tell a soft story. You have to know that I was hit in the face with something and got up bloody. It’s a different story, not the same cliché one that makes society think that one story represents us all. Give us some food for thought for the road. It doesn’t cost you nothing to mind your business! Be yourself, step your pussy up, get a job, own a business—do all that. Because your life would be better if you just mind yours.

SATURDAY NIGHTS AT THE WETBAR: A TASTE OF SOMETHING DIFFERENT BY JAMEER BAPTISTE

t seems as though no matter where you go in South Florida, every gay nightclub is booming with techno, house or Latin music. So when we heard about the new Hip Hop night at Wetbar, we just had to make an appearance. And it was well worth it! Wetbar in Little Havana is normally a gay Hispanic nightclub, but thanks to Classy Promotions every Saturday night the club is transformed into an urban oasis—a sweaty departure from the regular.

however, is the guest entertainment that is showcased. On some occasions, it might be a fierce drag performer and on others it’s a major or local performing artist. The caramel-skin contortionist transfixed the crowd with flips, dips and seductive moves, all while baring the Full Monty. It was a traditional male revue featuring a fully covered introduction leading into a completely exposed whipped cream finale. If that's not titillating entertainment then we don't know what is.

Which story was the most difficult for you to put into writing and share with the world? Once I decided I was going to share my story, nothing was really off limits. It all just flowed out of me. I didn’t think too much about it. The folks who follow me already know I don’t pull punches. If I’m going to discuss something, I’m going to crack it open and get my hands dirty. There is a chapter called “Ego Slip” in which I talk about having to take a day job a couple years ago. It was a very challenging time in my life and I debated for a moment that sharing my reservations about taking a regular gig would come off a little “woe is me,” like I thought I was too good to go to work like the rest of the world. But ultimately, I think it’s important for readers to know that even the people they consider celebrities have to balance check books and ask their landlords for extensions on their rent, just like everybody else. Getting honest with ourselves is really the whole point of this book, so I just went there. Among the stories in your book, you discuss being closeted on set. Describe that feeling. Some people you vibe with, and some people you don’t. Lying about who you are, either directly or by omission, isn’t going to bring you any closer to people. And if you’re not interested in getting closer to anybody, if you don’t care what they think, what’s the point of lying in the first place? That’s the bizarre trap of the closet. You think you’re protecting yourself from something by keeping people at a distance, but really you’re just missing opportunities to connect with people who would love you regardless. Ultimately, the people who can’t accept you for being honest about who you are don’t deserve a place in your life, anyway. What do you think causes the apparent yet invisible divide between race and sexual identity today? That question is exactly the reason I wrote the book. There’s the obvious response to that, which I touch on in the book: The mass media is all part of the white supremacist machine that limits the perceived humanity of non-white peoples by depicting us in very particular–usually

degrading–ways. So when the gay media, which is also run by white men, promotes images they want associated with gay people, they use white, buffed models with pretty faces and straight teeth. They’d probably call it “aspirational” before acknowledging how racist it is. But the other, probably less obvious issue is privilege. I think that integrating our black lives with our gay lives is the first step in claiming our complete identities. We need more of us to be talking openly and unapologetically about our black gay lives. We are the only ones who are going to accurately tell our stories, so it’s not productive for us to wait around for someone else to do it for us. You recently announced via Facebook that Doug Spearman’s film From Zero to I Love You is back in production. Can you tell us about the film? Great segue from talking about black guy men telling their own stories. Doug wrote this movie–which is very personal and reflective of an experience he actually had–a few years ago. My character is an openly gay man living in Philadelphia who meets and has a hot night with a man in a gay bar who turns out to have a wife and kids. It’s that timeless story of two men falling madly in love while one of them is in the closet. Richard Lawson plays my father in the film, which basically makes me Beyonce’s stepbrother. I’ve met Ms Tina, and she is everything. To support the production, please visit and drop some coins at: www.gofundme.com/FromZeroToILoveYou. What has been your most meaningful role to date? I think Noah [of Noah’s Arc] was a fierce character because he gave so many men permission to be their fierce selves with no shame. Noah was probably braver than I was in his personal expression and in his unabashed pursuit of romance. I really love the character for that and I feel very fortunate that I was able to do him justice. I also played a character a few years ago named Jane Finch on a show called Private Practice that meant a lot to me. I really loved that role because her story embodied the truth that we all just want to be loved. Whether we’re assigned the body at birth that represents who we truly are or not, it’s love that moves us to keep going. The desire to love and be loved drives us all. I also loved Andrew

45

in Boy Culture and Lenny on DTLA. They were both complicated men and I loved tackling their contradictions. You’ve been working in the entertainment industry for over 15 years. What motivates you to keep going? I talk about this in the book, too. What else could I possibly be doing right now? It’s almost as if this career chose me, because I cannot for the life of me figure out why I am hardheaded enough to keep pursuing this dream. I guess the real answer would be that I love telling stories. I love exposing the humanity in a character. I love sharing truths about myself and about all of us with the words of an imaginary person. You have taken on a range of roles throughout your career. How do you pick? You know, as long as a role isn’t offensive or degrading, I’ll probably take it if it’s offered. The experience of working is always educational, and I love learning more about the craft. If the character seems like something I’ve already done, I’ll take it upon myself to try to make him different from the ones I’ve played before. Along with your list of credits from screen and stage, you recently popped up in the hysterical video for Moovz titled "You're Gay, Now What." Can you tell us about your involvement with that organization? Honestly, I got involved with Moovz because the director of Boy Culture, Q. Allan Brocka, was directing the piece. I love Allan’s work, so anytime he calls me and asks me to do something, I’m pretty much game to do it. I was basically asked to do the voice over for the clip and then pop up at the very end with Willam Belli to explain how the app works to Joseph Royal, who is the kid that the spot follows. It just so happened that the app was something I could actually get behind. It’s essentially a safe place to meet and connect with other LGBT folks around the world. It’s not a hookup app, although nobody is policing your conversations once you’re there. When you read the book, you’ll see how I feel about the proliferation of hookup app culture. I like MOOVZ, because I’ve seen people find real support there. Not all of us live in big cities like LA and NYC, and some of us are still finding our footing in the gay world.

46

Yes, I’m all about integrating our lives and making no apologies for who we are to anyone, but we don’t all live in LGBT-friendly places and not everyone is secure enough in their identities to do that yet. MOOVZ provides a community for those of us who are comfortable in our skin to connect with and support those of us who still need a little help. I saw a really encouraging post about a trans woman who is still living as a man because she is scared to come out in her small town. The rush of support from virtual strangers I watched her get was so encouraging and inspiring that I got a little emotional reading through the comments. If we don’t find the time to make life less painful for those around us when we can, what are we doing here? You recently spent some time in Miami. Can you tell us a little about your experience here? I had a great time in Miami. I was really impressed with Miami Beach Bruthaz because there was a focus on community building and conversations about healthcare and supporting one another that I haven’t seen at other parties like that. It might have been because the men I happened to interact with were a little older than many of the men I see at circuit parties. Sure, the men were there to have a good time, but they weren’t doing it in messy or irresponsible ways. The conversation I mentioned earlier, where a guy named Jonathan thanked me for being “so brave and for providing an example of how free we could be,” happened at the White Party at Score on Friday night. I also met some very interesting men at the Bruthaz SpeakUP Red Carpet Cocktails and Conversation event. It was really refreshing to hear from these men who were around before Noah’s Arc and had a perspective on how much things have changed. It was a really good time. South Beach can be a little bit of a sensory overload for me, but once I got off Ocean Drive, I really enjoyed myself. I also went to the Pérez Art Museum Miami. The exhibit there right now is called “Poetics of Relation” and I highly recommend it to anyone with an appreciation for art and social justice. There are some really moving pieces on display and the museum is beautiful!. What would you say is the single greatest lesson you’ve learned in life thus far? Life is short. What you think, you become. So think good thoughts and dream big.

BOY MEETS WORLD WORDS BY DIEGO WYATT PHOTO BY JAMES DARLING

50

KIPP SLINGER IS A MAN OF MANY TALENTS. THE ADULT FILM STAR AND TRANS ACTIVIST OPENS UP ABOUT BODY IMAGE, THE TRANSGENDER MOVEMENT OF THE MOMENT & THE (IN)VISIBILITY OF TRANSGENDER MEN IN SOCIETY.

T

hree years ago, Kipp Slinger began transitioning into the man that he is today. The advocate, author and adult entertainer hasn’t had the picture-perfect journey, despite his irrepressible spirit. Behind his smoldering eyes, charming smirk and charismatic candor lies the heart of a true survivor who cares less about public opinion than remaining true to himself. Most people were introduced to Slinger through the video-sharing juggernaut YouTube. The native Midwesterner turned to the social platform to broadcast his journey onto the World Wide Web. What started off as a way to educate others about what it means to transition turned into a tool for self-reflection. “When I made the decision to transition, I was naturally really curious,” explains Slinger. “One of the things that I found really helpful was other guys’ YouTube videos. Seeing the physical transformation gave me somewhat of an idea of what was going to happen as did hearing their individual stories that ran the gamut of experiences. I think it’s really special that we live in an age where we can document that.” Slinger’s YouTube channel isn’t just chock-full of jaw-dropping physical changes, he shares personal experiences that shine a light on some of the barriers faced by individuals in the transgender community today. Slinger is quick to acknowledge that while he is a product of his past, he is far from a prisoner of it. “My childhood experiences have profoundly shaped me as an adult and continue to reverberate in ways that are both positive and not so good,” admits Slinger. “I’ve been through so many painful things that I could lose everything that I own today, including every single relationship. I would be devastated but on the mend fairly quickly. One of the things it also gave me was a fair bit of compassion for other people. I think I look at people that may be doing things that the rest of society might

question and I realize that there may be more to the story.” His compassion for others from any and all walks of life have made him an outspoken advocate for human rights. At a time when there is, what seems like, more visibility of transidentified individuals than ever, Slinger recognizes that something’s missing: visibility. “I think on a visible basis in heteronormative and homonormative society, transwomen, by virtue of their physical aesthetic, are more visible," says Slinger. "We physically fly under the radar right now for people who don’t have a specific eye. When you think about the way society interprets women’s bodies vs. men’s bodies, there’s a lot of attention that gets pulled towards women’s bodies. It’s like a woman’s worth is predicated on her body or the way she looks." Aside from the reduced visibility of transgender men, Slinger notes that there are a number of issues that need to be added into the conversations about transgender care as a whole. He notes that more trans-specific research should take place, as well as a long hard look at standards of care which stipulate the need for presurgical therapy to “prove” that trans-identified individuals identify as they say they do. “I think there needs to be a conversation about standards of care and I think what they are predicated upon is that transpeople are not mentally sound enough to make their own decisions about their gender. Therefore, we as a society need to take away their agency and have their gender proven to us. That is unacceptable to me.” Along with external barriers to care, Slinger has stumbled over self-imposed standards of beauty. “My standards of beauty are very much tied up in the standards of beauty I internalized when I was growing up,” confesses Slinger. “And those are cisgender. That’s something I continue to struggle with.” Resilient, compassionate and motivated, Slinger is putting into practice what he preaches: radical self-love and appreciation. Slinger isn't perfect, but the aspirational figure is forging a path through life on his terms. And he wouldn't have it any other way.

Cherry Grove Fire Island is known for its party atmosphere and clothing-optional beaches. Men from all over the world come to revel in endless entertainment and usually stay at the island’s main attraction, Grove Hotel. Recently, the hotel was destroyed in a fire; however, the hotel’s club, Ice Palace (1 Dock Walk, Cherry Grove, NY 11782; 631-597-660), escaped the flames and is still open for business. Every day in the summer the Ice Palace pool deck is laden with special events and featured performers.

KEY WEST, FLORIDA Key West is one of Florida’s first wellknown gay travel destinations. Although the gay establishments in the laid back town have dwindled since its flamboyant heydays in the 1980s and 1990s, the allure still exists. Two of their most beloved block parties, which the whole town attends and visitors can’t help but flock to, are Fantasy Fest and their New Year’s Eve Red Heel Shoe Drop. Fantasy Fest, held in October every year, is Key West’s themed street festival. Their New Year’s Eve Shoe Drop takes place at Key West’s iconic gay nightclub Bourbon Street Pub (724 Duval St. Key West FL; 305-293-9800) with nonstop televised street performances and the cherished shoe drop of legendary local drag queen Sushi at the stroke of midnight.

GRILLED CHEESE GOES GOURMET BY TIM HART

It’s not your mother’s grilled cheese!

I

was recently invited to participate in the Savor Our City Culinary Tours. It’s an historical walking food tour that took place in Wilton Manors in which small business owners, artisans, purveyors, and restaurant chefs shared their personal food stories and their passion for local, seasonal, sustainable eats. Along with learning about the area’s culinary and cultural background, we were treated to signature tastes from six different stops along the way. It was truly a rewarding time investment. A number of our readers were part of the tour and commented on how much they learned about the city and the various stops we made over the evening. I will highlight these establishments over the coming weeks. One of our first stops was New York Grilled Cheese Co. This restaurant is conveniently located right in the heart

62

of Wilton Manors across the street from the Alibi bar. There is metered parking out front and a parking lot in the rear of the building. While parking for lunch is no problem, dinner parking can be a challenge but is far from impossible. The restaurant has seating in both the front of the shop (right on the drive) and in the rear (for when you park out back or the front is full). The service was out of this world. We had a group of 15 and they staff was extremely attentive. We were able to sample a wide variety of the menu during our stop. The Grilled Cheese Sandwich has been an iconic staple food for generations in American households. The recipe has remained largely unchanged since its humble beginnings in the 1920s when the modern notion of a grilled cheese sandwich was born. Fast forward nearly 100 years and

the lackluster recipe scored a muchneeded reboot, courtesy of this nostalgically trendy gourmet grilled cheese. Transforming a seemingly ordinary recipe, this extraordinary restaurant concept dishes out a dramatic makeover, inside and out, taking the classic grilled cheese out of the frying pan and into the… waffle press? Sweet cheese! They’ve created a Muenster. If you’ve never been here, this is really an interesting meal. All of the sandwiches are served with a cup of tomato bisque soup which is perfect for dipping! They offer a number of different grilled cheese sandwiches including the Broadway Classic – American and Swiss cheeses on toasted sourdough bread with melted garlic butter ($8), the Blue Buffalo – blue marble jack and American cheeses with buffalo chicken and mayonnaise on toasted country loaf ($10), and my personal favorite – the MPD (Meat Packing District) Melt – American cheese, zesty horseradish and chive white cheddar cheese, holey aioli, with their slow roasted beef brisket, and caramelized onions on toasted country loaf ($10). The “Savor our City” group was going crazy over this one! In addition to the sandwiches are the sides. Unlike other restaurants – the sides are little meals all to themselves. They have three types of Fries ($7), Bacon Lollipops ($4) and the mouthwatering Sweet Potato Waffle Fries ($5). These fries are served with their special marshmallow sauce. Try to eat just one!

Any way you slice it, a New York Grilled Cheese melt is arguably the best thing to happen to grilled cheese since sliced bread!

CAN EXERCISE MAKE YOU A NICER PERSON?

U

nless you’re from another planet, you are most likely aware of the vast physiological benefits of regular exercise. Lower blood sugar, better cholesterol levels, decreased body fat, increased muscle mass and better flexibility head up the list of the number of advantages to keeping fit. Did you also know that numerous recent studies have uncovered marked psychological improvements in people who are fit? Yes, exercise can actually make you a nicer, happier person.

STAY SHARP. THINK SMART! According to Richard Norris, PhD at the University of Birmingham in England, the psychological and physiological benefits of exercise begin early. In several studies, 200 adolescents were put through a tenweek fitness training regime. Besides the evident physical improvements, subjects also reported less anxiety, depression, hostility and stress after regular exercise. Further studies on other populations reported that regular exercise also quickens the mind’s ability to process information, improves memory and retention, and sharpens the decisionmaking processes. This awesome mind/ body connection is indeed a great thing to behold!

EXERCISE CHANGES THINGS! In my twelve years of working with clients in the gym, I’ve found that perhaps the best mental effect of keeping fit is the sense of accomplishment it brings. For most people, getting to the gym is a chore. Once there, it can be tough to muster the strength to work out on a regimented basis. However, once a person starts exercising regularly (even just 20 minutes per day!) it doesn’t take long to feel and see the wonderful changes that begin to take place in the human body. Exercising can then be seen as something really good that you can do for yourself! Psychologically, it just goes to show that if you have a goal you want badly enough and are prepared to work for it, you can achieve almost anything you desire in

fitness

life. It’s great to see confidence and selfesteem bubble up in clients. What’s more, these qualities can carry over into other aspects of their personality making them more self-assured, and happy people at home, at work and in their relationships.

DON'T WORRY. BE HAPPY. For people who deal with depression, anxiety and other stress-related disorders, exercise is truly a must. Physical activities like weight training, hiking, yoga, Pilates, swimming and even walking release powerful pain-killing, feel-good chemicals in the body called endorphins and enkephalins. These hormones counteract the fatigue, aches, pains and bad feelings caused by other stress-induced and destructive hormones like cortisol. So you see, exercise not only helps you keep it together physically, it helps you to cope mentally as welL.

THERE'S A LIMIT. A word of warning is in order. Even exercise can be overdone. You need to be an avid fitness enthusiast, not an addict. When a person becomes so hooked on exercise that it becomes the driving, dominating force in life, excluding family, friends and job, something is out of order. Some guys won’t even take a break from working out when they are injured. This is pure craziness! Others become so hell-bent on having the perfect body that they cheat by using outlandish supplements and banned drugs. Exercise is great. It is essential to living and enjoying a better quality of life. But when it goes beyond reasonable limits, a healthy reality check or counseling from an expert in addiction may be in order. BEACH, PLEASE! SCREEN SAVOR BY GREGG SHAPIRO

PHOTO: DANIEL SMITH

THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. It’s been 50 or so years since popular Cold War-themed spy TV series such as The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Mission: Impossible debuted and became popular with the American public. In the time that has passed since then, Mission: Impossible has been turned into a successful film franchise. Now it’s time for The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (WB) to have a shot at it, so to speak. As slick as anything we’ve seen from Guy Ritchie, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. takes us behind the Iron Curtain in 1963 where chop-shop mechanic Gaby (the ubiquitous Alicia Vikander) is trying to conduct and mind her own business. That’s about to change, as both the CIA and KGB want Gaby to connect with her father and uncle (both with a Nazi history) who are believed to be involved with mega-rich/twisted Italian husband and wife team Victoria (Elizabeth Debicki) and Alexander (Luca Calvani) and their plan for world domina-

76

tion via nuclear warhead. Enter the CIA’s Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and the KGB’s Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer), who have been teamed up by their respective governments due to their unique abilities for the nearly impossible mission. Nazis and Russians and bombs, oh my! Fast-paced, funny, fashion conscious and surprisingly far less violent than we’ve seen from Ritchie in the past, these men from U.N.C.L.E. are obviously being groomed for future sequels, right down to Hugh Grant taking over the Leo G. Carroll role as the duo’s new boss Waverly. Narrowly avoiding being cartoony, including the hot Hammer’s Boris Badenov accent, while also not a parody, there is still humor aplenty. In a year when spy movies have become all the rage – from the latest Mission: Impossible to Kingsman, Spy and the forthcoming Bond flick Spectre, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is a welcome, if imperfect, addition.

cho Beach Party is still kind of a party-pooper. Bonus features on the newly remastered Blu-ray include commentary with writer/ actor Busch and director Robert Lee King, as well as a Los Straight-Jackets music video.

PSYCHO BEACH PARTY. Why isn't Psycho Beach Party (Strand Releasing), the movie adaptation of the witty Charles Busch's wacky stage play, funnier, campier, kitschier, more over the top, and just flat out gayer? As parodies go, Busch's askew vision of beach/ surfer flicks crossed with horror/slasher cinema gets some of it right (including the period choreography, costumes, goofy lingo, and homoerotic sexual tension), but there's still something lacking. Perhaps it’s the cast of mainly TV-star actors. Thomas Gibson as surfer god Kanaka; Nicholas Brendon as Northwestern U. psych-major dropout Starcat; Lauren Ambrose as the morbidly psychotic schizophrenic Chicklet/ Florence/Ann; Beth Broderick as Florence’s overprotective mother Mrs. Forrest; and Matt Keeslar as Swedish "foreign exchange student" Lars come close, but stop just short of hanging ten. Even Busch himself, as careeroriented and love-scorned detective Monica Sharp, is needlessly restrained. More than anything, Psycho Beach Party is notable for co-starring Amy Adams, in her second feature film role, as boy-crazy Marvel Ann. So, who’s to blame for the actors holding back or not being given enough to put forward? Inexperienced director Robert Lee King, whose previous work consisted of two "shorts," is probably the one at fault. Busch adapted the screenplay, so one would hope that he knew what he was doing. Whatever the case is, 15 years after debuting, Psy-

SEASHORE. Co-written/co-directed by Filipe Matzembacher and Marcio Reolon, the queer Brazilian film Seashore (Wolfe) is yet another coming of age story albeit one with an unexpected twist. Martin (Mateus Almada) and Tomasz (Maurício Barcellos), friends who are not as close as they used to be, embark on a journey to Martin’s abusive father’s beach house so that he can attend to business related to his late grandfather’s estate. As the days pass and the boys re-establish their friendship, they go to the shore (in spite of the cold temperatures), play video games (in a funny scene in which it at first appears they are doing something else entirely) and hang out with friends. Martin also finds time to meet a few times with Mrs. Marisa (Irene Brietzke) and her family who refuse to make the trip’s transaction an easy one. Seashore takes its time setting up Tomasz’s official coming out to Martin, and it’s almost worth the wait. Martin is, naturally for someone of his generation, accepting of Tomasz. Their interaction during this sequence, very near the end of the movie, is endearing, emotional and authentic. Things take an unforeseen, but not all that surprising, turn just minutes from the end. In Portuguese with subtitles; the DVD contains no bonus material worth mentioning.
