THE LAST

MEAN GIRLS

ARE GAY MEN THEIR OWN WORST ENEMIES?

W

hen it comes to bullying and the gay community, the conversation is largely one-sided. Gay men are more often than not assumed to be the victims of these cruel and unusual acts of verbal, emotional and/or physical aggression. Many people seem more invested in perpetuating the idea of the gay victim than discussing the fact that some gay men are the biggest bullies of the bunch. We call them mean girls, and they rarely ever break the mold. You can typically find them slurping down sludge made by Starbucks while verbally dissecting others through face fillers and half-concealed lisps. They are probably tapping their designer shoes at others in disapproval and committing sassy comebacks to memory for later use. Each day, gay men come into contact with a gay bully. They take the form of the muscle queen at the local gym, an annoying and overbearing colleague, some creeper on Grindr, the mouthy kid at the bar, or even our own reflection in the mirror. What’s worse is that because we interact with varying degrees of these characters, we become desensitized to their folly or even feed into their

14

tomfoolery. The result is the same: frustration and resentment for others in the gay community. Whether they are acting out some repressed adolescent angst or need to be queen bee, this animosity has devastating consequences. It proves incredibly divisive and causes many of us to assume the worst of other gay men. We anticipate cattiness, high drama and superficiality, because that’s what we’ve become conditioned to expect. And whenever you seek out the worst in people, you are sure to find it. Behind their steely exteriors lie bigger issues that should be met with compassion instead of contempt. This is easier said than done, especially when a bitch slap or an appropriately-timed cocktail to the face looks so attractive. Every upturned nose, lingering stare of disapproval and acerbic retort says more about what these so-called mean girls think of themselves than whomever they choose to attack. Are gay men their own worst enemy? We very well could be. We are capable of doing far more damage to one another than the Westboro Baptist Church, Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis and eight years of George “Dubya” Bush combined. It’s a jungle out there. Be sure to sharpen those manicured digits. And if you don’t have anything nice to say, run for Republican Party presidential elect.

TROYE SIVAN

SONIC YOUTH BREAKS THE SOUND BARRIER

A

ustralia has brought the gays some pretty noteworthy talent, including: Olivia Newton John, Courtney Act, Hugh Jackman and 20-year-old singer/songwriter Troye Sivan. Not since Lorde’s 2013 debut “Royals” has a young Aussie musician generated such buzz. The openly gay performer is

catching the ear of audiences around the world with his thoughtfully meditative music. His work is a far cry from the lazy pop tunes churned out by most young artists at the start of their careers. Lucky for us all! Sivan, who is also an accomplished actor, has collaborated with the likes of Tyler Oakley, Alex Hope and New Zealand duo Broods. He recently released his hotlyanticipated mini-album, Wild, which subsequently hit #1 in 41 countries, including the U.S., Brazil, Canada, Russia and Sweden. Sivan’s latest effort is available for digital download now.

Smith. Sam Smith. Out and proud UK pop crooner Sam Smith will be singing the theme to the latest James Bond installment, Spectre. The song, titled “Writing's on the Wall,” will be released September 25. “This is one of my career highlights,” said Smith. "I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible lineup of some of my biggest musical inspirations." Smith's tune and a shirtless Daniel Craig will hit US theaters November 6.

Graphic Content. Bulgarian pop star Alek Sandar takes on the ubiquity of sex and celebrity in popular culture in the video for his single “P.O.R.N.” “Our real life is porn, and I’m not even ashamed of it,” says Sandar. “I’m proud of it.” That he is. The steamy visuals for the intense dance song, which features transgender icon Amanda Lepore, is wrought with innuendo and gratuitous flashes of skin. A number of New York’s boldest performers from the ballroom scene also make cameos.

Jay Alexander is a rising photographer whose unwavering focus on the male form and eye for contrast is quickly making him the toast of the town. He's conquered Atlanta and New York and now his sights are set on Florida. We caught up with the young photographer and model to discuss his work, his future aspirations and how he feels about his new stomping grounds in Miami. BY DIEGO WYATT

You started doing photography as a teenager. How would you say your “eye” has changed since then? I believe you look at things in a different way as you get older. This is from life experiences. Photography is an art and I believe it says something about me as a person. My subject matter has definitely changed, from shooting kid's sports and weddings to men's physiques. While we’re on the subject, you seem to have a preoccupation with the male form. What inspires you to shoot the bodies of beautiful men? The male form varies so much with how much muscle someone has or how shredded they are. The male form makes beautiful shapes. It’s always captivating. Does it ever get tiring shooting such beautiful creatures? Never. Their personalities also great as well!

is drawn to men's physiques. My work tends to be a little erotic with a catalog and artistic flow. I also have a corporate advertising eye when it comes to fitness, underwear and swimwear. Sometimes, I even blur the lines. Simply put: Let’s just say I work with a lot of beautiful muscular men. You’ve done photography for years. What motivates you to keep going? Changing and growing motivates me. When I can look at what I shot a year ago and see something different, I know I'm expanding. What makes a great photographer, in your opinion? Just one thing: Growth. Challenging yourself is key to growth. You’re now located in Florida. How does it differ from the other places you’ve lived in terms of your line of work? Locations I feel are more extravagant here. There’s less studio photography and more natural lighting. I feel that New York, of course, has more models to work with, but Miami has more than Atlanta. I am enjoying it so far, and I am looking forward to continuing my journey here.

Let’s just say I work with a lot of beautiful muscular men.

You’ve not only been behind the camera, but you’ve modeled. Which do you find the most challenging? They are both challenging in their own way, but I guess you could say modeling is easier for me. With photography, there are endless possibilities that you can control. Finding out how to execute each possibility is the hard part.

Has being in front of the camera helped you photograph your subjects? Definitely! It is easier to direct the model and I can predict what direction the model is going in. I can relate with my subjects, which builds a faster connection to make a great image. How would you describe your work to someone who has never seen it? My eye

You're making a name for yourself in Florida right now. What’s next for you and the Jay Imaging brand? I am working with a few underwear and swimwear brands right now, and am excited to see the results. My goal is to continue on into corporate advertising making big things happen for many rising stars. I am always looking for models.

VAGABUNDOS: MIAMI'S PREMIER GAY POOL PARTY

W

hen it comes to having a chic allinclusive pool party, Vagabundos is where it’s at. Come rain or shine the monthly Sunday pool party rages on with an energetic crowd packed with sultry eye candy of all different flavors who are both approachable and fun. The warm and welcoming vibe is exactly what Vagabundos party promoter, Ramon Molina, was hoping to achieve when he first conceptualized the event after he was approached by the Vagabond Hotel to help with party development. “We cater to anybody in the LGBT community and their friends who want to have fun and meet friends on a Sunday afternoon,” explains Molina. The recently renovated Vagabond Hotel, located in the heart of Miami’s MIMO District, is the perfect backdrop for a pool party affair. The Hotel’s original 1950’s restoration is complete with Astroturf. The streamlined bar adds to the stylish ambience of hot men prancing about in distractingly seductive swimwear. The event draws in a big crowd. Labor Day Weekend they welcomed over 400 partygoers,

32

or friends as Molina likes to refer to them. But don’t be discouraged. What some would perceive as a herd is actually a well-dispersed group of friends hanging out around a sizable pool space. The hotel’s spacious, retro pool area isn’t the only component that lures the men to the water. Resident DJ AJ Reddy’s captivating mixes attract friends and keep them jamming all throughout the affair. He’s most certainly the reason we caught wind of the event. “I have to recognize the help of several of my friends, each of whom chipped in with their unique talents,” praises Molina. “They have contributed their time, talent and support to make this party what it is today.” The success of Vagabundos is perpetuated by a combination of great music, a stellar environment and good friends. Be sure to make a splash soon. The last Vagabundos pool party of 2015 will take place October 11. You’re most certainly guaranteed to have a good time. EUROPEAN INQUISITION

T

hroughout the European Inquisition, the term faggot was commonly used to refer to sticks used to set fires, as well as individuals who went against the teachings of the Catholic Church. Any convicted Heretics were forced to gather bundles of sticks and carry them to the fire over which they'd soon be burned at the stake. Heretics who had a change of heart were forced to wear a design embroidered on their sleeves to show their previous lack of faith. The term went on to refer to any type of burden that was difficult to bear.

48

LATE 16TH CENTURY

T

he term faggot became an insult by the late 16th century. Back then, it was used as an abusive attribution directed at women—specifically elderly women. Although there are gaps in the word's etymology, it is widely thought that the term is a shortened version of the term faggot-gatherer, a term later used to describe elderly widows who earned a living through the menial task of collecting and selling bundles of firewood.

here are references of note that claim that the word faggot was used in reference to a man enlisted into military service to fill out the ranks to sufficiency. However, this use has yet to be linked successfully to its perjorative use today. The term is also linked to the act of fagging, a common practice among British school boys at the time. Younger boys would carry out any number of duties (possibly even sexual) for older boys.

s the term began gaining momentum as a formidable form of abusive language in the US at the turn of the century, it had completely different connotations in varying regions of the world, like the UK. There, the term was used to describe a traditional dish, as well as cigarettes.

MICHAEL LYNCH 50

Undressed

LAST CALL Michael Lynch is on fire! The tall, tan and totally adorable Southern gent has been heating things up behind the bar at The Manor Complex for five months. We poured it up with the sweet and sexy boy next door-turned bartender to learn more about what really makes him tick. Now this is what we call Southern comfort. Who's thirsty? WORDS BY JAMEER BAPTISTE | PHOTO BY DENNIS DEAN

Michael Lynch was always content and happy in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, until he realized that he wanted to experience something different and someplace new. Lynch had this epiphany at the tail end of his college career. He didn't know where he wanted to go. He didn't know what he wanted to do. All the 6'2" stunner knew was that he had outgrown his childhood suburb of Germantown. As he completed his last two semesters of school at the University of Memphis, Lynch devised an escape plan to ditch his small town life. Lynch finished college with a degree in history and anthropology, but his initial intent to become a history teacher was scrapped. He felt it would only tether him to Germantown. “I always had a personality to do what I wanted to do when I wanted to do it,” says Lynch of a trait that was most likely a result of his upbringing. Even though he had a half brother on his father's side that was ten years his senior, Lynch lived alone with his parents. He was an only child by default. “I was spoiled, but I was never a brat.” confesses Lynch. “At least that’s what I was told.” Lynch was a rambunctious child who found his groove at the wee age of three. Ever since he can remember, he always loved to dance. Lynch loved it so much, his stay-athome mother would constantly tune into VH1 so Lynch could bust a move. As Lynch grew older his outgoing footloose ways diminished and he developed a shy personality. This was partially the result of misguided prepubescent perceptions of masculinity. His father's side of the family embodied the essence of the All American sports fanatic and Lynch thought it wise to follow suit. Lynch played practically every sport growing up. He secretly hated each one, but his father

would never let him quit once he started. Moreover, Lynch’s headstrong personality wouldn’t allow it. There was, however, one thing that Lynch and his late father bonded over: animals. Lynch recalls his father taking him to the best fields to catch snakes. Lynch had every pet you can think of, and at one point his father even owned a pet store. “I had the ideal childhood,” remarks Lynch, but such fond memories weren't enough to persuade him to stay in Memphis. In high school Lynch started hitting the gym to transform his lanky physique into muscles. By the time he finished college, he parlayed his workout skills into a job as a personal trainer. This allowed Lynch to earn enough cash to move down to Florida. Florida was a favorite family vacation destination when he was young. It was also one of the only places Lynch knew other than Memphis. Lynch claims the Sunshine State was his diving board to a new life, although he had no idea whether he would stay or go. He just knew it was a good place to start. “Living in Florida was a great change,” says Lynch. “The best thing about moving here was meeting my boyfriend Deiler “Carlos” Beltran.” Lynch is so smitten with his boyfriend of three years that he even changed his profession to bartender, the same as Beltran, so their work schedules would coincide. When Lynch isn't pouring it up as a bartender at The Manor Complex, he is enjoying life with Beltran and his two dogs. The Manor Complex 2345 Wilton Drive Wilton Manors, Florida 33305 954-626-0082

THE COMING OUT EFFECT

BY DIEGO WYATT

Success is a whole lot sweeter on the other side of the closet door. Just ask some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Unlike in years gone by, coming out translates into record sales, box office bank and press coverage galore. They’re here, they’re queer and they’re ready for their closeup.

T

he cantankerous Hollywood machine is fueled by perception and powered by smoke and mirrors. Microwavable celebrities, who simply need a little spotlight and some sort of pedestal, stay hot for only 15 fleeting minutes of fame. If they’re lucky, they can make a name for themselves in a business known for swallowing people (and their egos) whole. There are more ways than one to stay relevant in the entertainment industry. Some stars link themselves to other celebrities, some turn to reality television and become small screen caricatures of their formers and some rely on a little good, old-fashioned shock value to get the job done. In recent years, however, a curious phenomenon has

bolstered the careers of many and helped stars extend their time in the spotlight: coming out of the closet. This Coming Out Effect describes the chain reaction that occurs when a public figure announces their sexual orientation to the world. The phenomenon catapults already established stars into even greater success. At the same time, it increases community visibility and creates a snowball effect of sorts by setting up the next star to come out publicly. More than at any other time in recorded history, Hollywood is overcrowded with entertainers who openly identify along the LGBTQ spectrum. It’s getting hard to keep track of them, but it wasn’t always that way.

57

A number of notable stars of yesteryear were publicly outed posthumously or after they peaked in the business. Many people in the entertainment industry knew about the sexual proclivities of stars like Rock Hudson, Robert Reed, Freddie Mercury, Anthony Perkins, Montgomery Clift and the like, but sexuality wasn’t discussed openly by many. And then there were stars like Sal Mineo and James Dean. Their Hollywood legend is wrapped up in their relationships with other men.

To be gay in Hollywood today means something completely different than it used to. It means options and opportunities. In fact, some stars attribute coming out to their sustained success in such a fickle business. Established actor Zachary Quinto admitted that coming out publicly was a great career move in an interview with The Telegraph. “I work more now than I ever did when I was in the closet and I’m doing a wider range and variety of roles than I ever did before I came out,” says the 37-year-old entertainer. “I feel like that’s what I need to keep demanding of myself and what I need to keep demanding of the industry.”

58

Quinto’s remarks are representative of the time. Back in the ‘80s, veteran actor Rupert Everett publicly announced that he is gay. The star later revealed that it may not have been the best career move for him. “All through my career it was a huge issue,” said Everett in an interview with The Daily Telegraph last year. “There’s only a certain amount of mileage you can make, as a young pretender, as a leading man, as a homosexual. There just isn’t very far you can go.” What was once earth-shattering news isn’t enough to warrant the bat of an eyelash now. People are slower to speculate about a public figure’s sexual orientation and are quick to anticipate their coming out. Progress? Maybe. A sign of the times? Absolutely. It’s a double-edged sword. Openly gay entertainers open themselves up to a wealth of opportunities many heterosexual stars wouldn’t think twice about (including turns on any Ryan Murphy production—it’s no secret that he loves employing the gays). At the same time, openly gay entertainers are often thrown into a box and forced to press their faces up against stereotypes in pantomime to be taken seriously. The freedom granted by coming out publicly comes with its fair share of emotional and professional baggage. Out and proud stars may be flying high, but they’re still navigating the business while tethered to a lot more than they bargained for. The phenomenon isn’t enough to get some stars to come out though. And some simply refuse to make their sexual proclivities public knowledge despite pandering reporters and the prying eyes of paparazzi. Publicly coming out has made stars out of individuals who may have otherwise gone overlooked. This doesn’t negate the talent of these individuals. It simply suggests that coming out made their star rise a little faster and shine a little brighter. The Coming Out Effect is merely the tipping point. At some point, this novelty wears off and all that’s left to look at is someone’s talent. This means coming out of the closet may get you in the door these days, but it is no longer enough to keep you there. Either way it has brought a wealth of diverse talent to the mainstream. We can only hope that it stays this way.

Not too long ago, it was a commonly held notion that gay didn’t pay. Gay roles were seen as stark artistic choices that were undoubtedly followed by crippling allegations—not unlike being branded a witch in Salem during the 17th century. Openly gay actors were few and far between and most didn’t enjoy the mainstream success of their heterosexual or closeted counterparts. “Beards,” arranged relationships with someone of the opposite sex, served as convenient and flimsy distractions, but many people saw through them (and still do).

ARTOPIA: BRIDGING COMMUNITIES THROUGH THE ARTS

he Gay and Lesbian Business Exchange (GLBX) of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for their annual Artopia fundraiser, which is set to be an amazing mash up of culinary, fashion, visual and performance arts. Michael Faerber, the Chair of Artopia, and Geph Scarr, the Co-chair of Artopia and Chair of the GLBX, created the annual fundraiser in 2014 as an alternative to the conventional black tie gala. They wanted something different—a game changer that would not only raise funds, but would leave an lasting impression on attendees. “It’s more of a celebration than a typical sit down fundraiser dinner,” assures Scarr. Faerber and Scarr knew that creating an art extravaganza would help the event appeal to a broader audience. Unlike most gay and lesbian chambers of commerce, the GLBX is one of multiple councils (subdivisions) within the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce. “We are the only gay and lesbian council within a chamber,” expresses Faerber. By creating a fundraiser that focuses on the arts, Faerber and Scarr have channeled a shared interest that attracts all communities. Artopia

62

is a signature event for the gay and lesbian community as well as an event that the Greater Fort Lauderdale public at large can take part in and enjoy. “Artopia is the glue that brings us all together,” adds Scarr. Faerber and Scarr witnessed the inspiring and uniting power of art at the GLBX’s Artopia Launch Party on Thursday, September 10. A mixture of business owners and community members came out in support of the efforts of the GLBX board, which is comprised entirely of volunteers. Among other highlights, PNC Bank became an official Artopia sponsor that evening. The Artopia fundraiser is presented by Audi Fort Lauderdale for the second year and will be hosted at the NSU Art Museum on Friday, November 20. Guests can expect to be razzledazzled by specialty performances, tasty culinary creations and creative designs that will be available for purchase. POLE PERSUASION 64

if hitting up the gym isn't exactly your idea of a workout, give pole dancing a twirl. the full body routine will get you toned in no time and it's fun! we can't promise that you'll walk away with any tips, but it's still worth a try. here, enthusiast mike dasilva takes us for a spin.

C

ontrary to popular belief, pole dancing is not just a performance art that is practiced in gentleman's clubs by strippers. It also happens to be an effective form of exercise. Just ask Mike DaSilva, General Manager at Scarfone's Wilton Manors, who stumbled upon pole dancing two and half years ago as an alternative to the gym. “A co-worker told me about it when I was living in Connecticut," says DaSilva. "Initially, I didn’t know what I wanted to get out of it. I just really thought it was interesting. God knows I hate the gym, but now it’s what I do for fitness and it’s a great conversation starter.” Many shy away from the art form from fear of being judged, but DaSilva believes that the physical benefits far outweigh public opinion. “I didn’t care," admits DaSilva. "I just thought it was something completely out of the norm and that’s what honestly drew me to it. Plus, women mostly get slack for it. Me, as a guy, I get the question: ‘Are you the only guy?’” DaSilva points out a curious phenomenon anyone who engages in pole dancing classes experiences. Men are disproportionately represented. “9 out of 10 times, I’m usually the only male," he says. "That’s just because it all falls back to people thinking it’s primarily for women. I recommend it to men and women both straight and gay. Once you take a class, you feel a sense of comfort.” Aside from surface hangups, DaSilva notes that many people walk into the experience assuming that they have to

have a certain physique or skill level. We've seen performers arch their backs and point their toes without breaking a sweat, while they contort their frames around a slender steel pole. DaSilva assures that there are no physical prerequisites, although appropriate professional supervision is advised. “There is no specific body composition or level of flexibility required," he says. "It’s all about progression. And keep in mind it’s a non-judgmental space.” Pole dancing involves the use of more muscles than one would imagine. The workout achieved by the activity can be just as rigorous and rewarding as the one resulting from an hour or so at the gym. “It’s a full body workout and you do get sore," says DaSilva. "You use your lower body, but not so much. You establish your strength in the beginning course, while doing other exercises like ab workouts and stretches.” To anyone considering taking up pole dancing, DaSilva offers up simple, yet sage, advice: “Pole dancing studios are like regular gyms," assures DaSilva. "Once you get over the the typical questions that run through your head, you move on and enjoy it while learning a new skill. You can explore the dance of it or butch it up and be a trickster with little to no dancing at all.” DaSilva currently trains at Pixie Fitness in Pompano with world-class instructors like Derick Pierson. He eventually hopes to use his skills to compete and win national championship titles. With his dedication and sweet moves, it looks like he'll take home the title easily.

POLE RECREATION

COMMANDMENTS

3

Practice makes perfect. The best way to master the pole is to stick with it. There are always new moves to learn and opportunities for you to hone your skills.

Don't sweat it. Sweating is a natural response to any physical activity, but it can make the pole slippery and hard to manage. Take periodic breaks to stay cool and dry.

Keep it clean. Repeated use of poles makes you less likely to get a good grip. Clean off excess oils and dead skin with alcohol. This will improve skin contact with the pole.

4

5

6

Take your time. Pole dancing isn't simple or easy. Take your time to learn techniques and ensure that you are following instructions. This will keep your from injuring yourself.

Show some skin. One of the best way to gain pole control is to bare as much skin as you're comfortable with. The more skin contact you make with the pole, the better.

Have fun! Pole dancing provides a great workout, but it is also a way to add some fun into your typical routine. Take your time and enjoy yourself. It's pole dancing after all!

ON THE GAYDAR

MILANCITA RODRIGUEZ

Milancita Rodriguez is one of the most recognizable faces in South Florida's LGBT nightlife scene. The business-minded beauty has branded herself as a leading promoter, but there's much more to her than meets the eye. We caught up with the rising mogul to discuss her rich history and bright future within the nightlife arena. WORDS BY JAMEER BAPTISTE PHOTO BY JUAN SACO MIRONOFF

ilancita Rodriguez has made a name for herself in South Florida’s LGBT community. Through hard work, persistence and determination, she has become one of the most well-respected promoters throughout Broward and Miami-Dade County. “I’m very persistent, because any business owner knows how challenging it is to start a company,” says Rodriguez. “I think being transgender made it even more difficult, but he who persists, prevails.” It wasn’t only persistence that propelled Rodriguez’s business venture forward, it was also her creative vision that captured people’s attention. Rodriguez started her company, Milancita.com, in 2004 as a portal where partygoers could research different events in the area and retrieve photos of themselves and friends from past events. It was an ingenious idea and people flocked to Milancita.com to share their photos and learn about upcoming parties. However, Rodriguez didn't become a promoter until a dear friend of hers, Joe Granda, introduced her to the promotion business. “Before I knew it, I was promoting for Score, Boardwalk, Voodoo Lounge, Living Room, Azucar, Bongo’s and of course Discotekka,” mentions Rodriguez. “Right now, I’m a promoter for Bailo Nightclub Complex and Wet Bar Miami.” Rodriguez has transformed her company into a thriving, multifaceted enterprise through which she provides her clients with additional services, including: graphic design, website development, consulting and business analysis. “Milancita.com has been an evolving company since conception,” says Rodriguez. “It has been a tremendous change.” Milancita.com is ready to evolve again as

Rodriguez focuses on her personal initiative to continue giving back to the LGBT community. Other than being attached to several philanthropic organizations and LGBT-friendly causes, Rodriguez has had her hands full with a special project. “I’m not at liberty to talk about anything at this moment, but by the end of the year I will have an incredible announcement to make,” promises Rodriguez. Even with the growth of Milancita.com, Rodriguez remains committed to providing her followers with an incredible nightlife experience. No matter how busy she gets, you can always count on her to be at the club smiling and mingling with guests. “I’m inspired by my crowd and their desire to be out and about,” says Rodriguez. “It’s for them that I work so hard, because I want to give them only the best parties and memories.” Rodriguez credits her employees and her love for what she does as the core reasons why she has been able to sustain her nighttime adventures and daytime workload. “My motto is work hard and play harder,” laughs Rodriguez. “It’s not easy, but luckily I have some great people who work for me that allow me to sleep in a little longer.” Rodriguez doesn’t plan on clubbing forever and can’t wait to retire with her husband, Robert Lamas, and their two dogs, Brunito and Panchito. For right now, however, there’s no time to slow down. “I have just joined forces with the White Party and we’ll be having our first official Latin party, White Heat, during White Party Week on Wednesday November 25, 2015 at Bailo Nightclub,” announces Rodriguez. Stay up-to-date with Rodriguez’s events and receive opportunities to get on her exclusive guest lists, visit her website at www.Milancita.com.

THE SOUNDS OF MUSIC PITCH PERFECT 2. The 2012 comedy with music Pitch Perfect was one of the runaway box office hits of that year. Sort of like Glee on steroids, the movie expanded on the TV series’ brand of insult humor and amped up the musical performances to earn a cult following and then some. Now available on Blu-ray+DVD+Digital HD, Pitch Perfect 2 (Universal) begins by welcoming back a cappella enthusiasts as three-time defending champs, the Barden U Bellas, take the stage at the Kennedy Center to perform for President and Mrs. Obama. With sequins and sparkles in abundance, as well as choreography and vocal gymnastics, the show comes to a halt when a split seam and the absence of undergarments result in Fat Amy (Rebel

74

Wilson) presenting the Prez with a “birthday gift from down under.” The Bellas’ one hope for reinstatement is if they can win the World A Cappella Championships in Copenhagen. But there are many things working against them. Becca (Anna Kendrick) has accepted an internship at a recording studio run by KeeganMichael Key. Emily is more interested in writing and performing original material. Das Sound Machine, the Bellas’ biggest competitors, are indomitable Teutonic tyrants dead set on winning. Pitch Perfect 2 is not only able to stand on its own, but it also sets the stage for more to come. Blu-ray exclusives include a previously unseen Treblemakers number, several featurettes, gag reel, deleted and extended scenes, feature commentary and more.

BESSIE. Nominated for 12 Emmy Awards, the biopic Bessie (HBO) stars Queen Latifah in a career-high performance as the openly bisexual (during the 1910s and 20s, no less!) blues singer Bessie Smith. From her early days performing for unappreciative audiences in Atlanta in 1913 to her later concert appearance at Carnegie Hall, Smith was truly a legendary artist.

Notable for its depiction of Smith’s sexuality and relationships, Bessie was directed by queer filmmaker Dee Rees (Pariah). The supporting cast, including Oscar-winner Mo’Nique as Bessie’s mentor and fellow queer blues diva Ma Rainey, Khandi Alexander as Bessie’s bitter sister Viola, Tika Sumpter as Bessie’s longtime lover Lucille and Michael Kenneth Williams as Bessie’s unfaithful husband Jack, are all outstanding. As you might have guessed, Latifah is dazzling in a role it would seem that she was born to play. The costumes are also spectacular. The DVD special feature Bessie: A Creative Journey as an up close view of what it took to bring the film to fruition and includes cast and crew interviews.

LOVE & MERCY. There is one reason, and only one reason, to see Love & Mercy (Lionsgate/ Roadside Attractions). That reason is Paul Dano’s stunning portrayal of Brian Wilson during the 1960s. It’s the kind of performance that can and does redeem what is essentially a mediocre movie.

Director Bill Pohlad hasn’t helmed a movie in 24 (!) years and after a clunker such as Love & Mercy one can only hope he’ll wait 24 more before making the next one. Beginning at the peak of the Beach Boys’ commercial success, shortly before the recording of Pet Sounds, Love & Mercy moves awkwardly back and forth in time, from the 1960s to the late 1980s. Following the Beach Boys – Brian (Dano) and his brothers Dennis (Kenny Wormwald) and Carl (Brett Davern), cousin Mike Love (Jake Abel) and Al Jardine (Graham Rogers) – through the mid1960s, during what would turn out to be the most tumultuous period of the band’s lengthy career, the movie is lively and fascinating. However, it is also at this point in Brian’s life that the voices he had been hearing in his head since 1963 began to take control of his life. Out of this downward spiral came some of the greatest and most enduring music Wilson ever created. The Pet Sounds recording sessions in Love & Mercy are among the most riveting scenes in the film. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the scenes involving the older Wilson (portrayed by John Cusack). Whereas Dano’s transformation is complete, Cusack’s is less so. While the actor does a respectable job of giving us Wilson at his most helpless and hopeless, with the exception of a couple of scenes, he never looks haggard, beaten down or doped up enough. When Cusack’s Wilson encounters Cadillac saleswoman Melinda (Elizabeth Banks), she provides the sole ray of light in his life. However, on their first date, when Wilson calls her name outside of her house, you half expect him to hoist a boom-box over his head, playing “In My Room” instead of “In Your Eyes.” Sadly, their developing relationship is threatened by the presence of quack doctor Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti), who essentially controlled Wilson’s life for several years. Dano’s praiseworthy and transformative embodiment of Wilson is the first truly Oscarworthy performance of 2015. The irony that a live rendition of the titular tune, which opens with the line “I was sitting in a crummy movie with my hands on my chin,” plays over the closing credits probably won’t be lost on too many viewers. DVD + digital special features include audio commentary, deleted scenes and a pair of featurettes.

SIX SECRETS TO SUCCESSFUL TRAINING UNLOCKED BY TOM BONANTI

78

FITNESS

W

hether you’ve just begun to exercise, or you’ve been at it for years, you know that it isn’t easy staying fit. It takes dedication and sacrifice to see those gains, and feel the strength inside those muscles surge with each curl, fly and squat. As a lifelong fitness enthusiast and a personal trainer for the past 12 years, I’ve worked with men and women of all ages and backgrounds. Based upon this experience, I have to say that there are six basic qualities (secrets, if you will) that typify people who’ve succeeded in their quest for a stronger, more attractive body. Here they are unlocked just for you! LEARN FROM PROFESSIONALS First, learn from professionals. Do your research online about exercise programs which are age appropriate and suitable for your current fitness level. Talk with friends and co-workers who are fit, get their ideas, find out their secrets! Visit health clubs near where you live and work, and find a place that is clean, modern, and friendly. Check out equipment; find out about group classes and complementary personal training sessions; make sure that the gym hours fit your schedule. Speaking of personal training, it might be beneficial at the outset to hire a certified, experienced, insured, personal trainer to help you design your program or tweek the program you are presently using. ALWAYS HAVE A PLAN Second, always go to the gym with a plan. Your time is valuable, so when you carve out a niche to exercise, make sure that you have goals, objectives and a method to accomplish them efficiently. Periodize your training. By this I mean, know which muscle groups you are training on which days. Keep a journal, written or on your phone about the exercises you perform (sets, reps, weight, etc.), how you felt while working out and notes about how to improve your next workout. Stay consistent, whether your workout is swimming, martial arts, lifting weights, anything, just stay with it.

KNOW YOUR BODY Third, stay in touch with your body. Know which muscles you are working. Feel the intensity, experience the burn with each rep of each set. Stress proper form with each exercise. If you have an ache or pain, stop exercising momentarily, stretch, get water, re-evaluate your form, lower the weight and get moving again! Get enough sleep each night, eight to ten hours, to facilitate muscle growth and recovery. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE MOTIVATION Fourth, surround yourself with positive motivation. Keep daily reminders in front of you to keep you focused. Post favorite pics and quotes on your bathroom mirror, desk, computer, tablet or phone. Steer clear of folks who are negative, snarky and critical of your healthy goals. Surround yourself with happy, fit, active people as role models, who will build you up. LIVE A BALANCED LIFE Fifth, live a balanced life. As much as you may love it, don’t let training control your life. Reading, relaxing, hanging with friends and enjoying other pastimes like hiking, kayaking, swimming, cycling, etc., are just as beneficial to you as the hours you spend in the gym. DON'T PROCRASTINATE Finally, don’t procrastinate. Start exercising now. Leave that sedentary, flabby, existence behind. Lose that five pounds beginning today before it turns to 50 pounds with the blink of an eye. You are not too old, too busy, or too important to get into better shape today, this moment! Tom Bonanti is a certified fitness trainer and massage therapist (MA#40288) with his own gym and studio Pump'N Inc. www. pumpnincgym.com at 1271 NE 9th Avenue in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
