GENERATION ME
stances, all in an effort to reach perfection (whatever that means).
f you haven’t heard, you may fall into what is commonly referred to as the “me” generation. It is characterized by the abundance of individuals therein who are confident, open-minded and ambitious, as well as narcissistic, anxious and self-involved. While these characteristics are often projected onto millennials, many of us can be lumped into this very category.
In this quest for so-called perfection, we lose ourselves. We buy new noses and chins and pecs to convince ourselves that we are no longer those pencil-legged, pie-faced spazzes that clumsily traipsed across school grounds. Some of us can’t even walk past a shiny surface without checking out our reflection. We pump our bodies with substances that could very well be sponsored by Tupperware to attain a standard of beauty to which we will never measure up—in our eyes, at least.
YOU'RE SO VAIN, YOU PROBABLY THINK THIS ARTICLE IS ABOUT YOU. DON'T YOU?
I
While this generalization of self-involvement is used to paint a portrait of a population at-large, it reads like many of the characteristics often attributed to gay men. To many peering through the looking glass, we are self-absorbed creatures of vanity tumbling through Wonderland just hoping nary a hair falls out of place. Should you deviate from our plan or impossible set of standards, off with your head! Such a blanket view could come as a hard pill to swallow, if there weren’t some truth to it. By nature, human beings are vain—naturally, the levels of said vanity vary from individual to individual. Many ascribe that it is hard-wired into our DNA as gay men, dismissing it as a quirky character trait. Some of us have been sold the idea that we have to look or act a certain way. As such, we obsess over every single detail of our lives, even if we wield no control in certain in-
14
Aside from physical preoccupations, the “me” generation is characterized by a reliance on digital devices to communicate effectively. We rush to our social media accounts to detail the most personal moments in our lives without abandon. What were once private thoughts are now owned by the Internet, documented and archived for digital memories in the future. Our present well-being can be summed up in a Facebook status update and our feelings can be captured in an emoji. What may sound like technological advances reads more like the social retardation of a generation unable to carry out an intelligent conversation face to face. There’s nothing wrong with taking pride in your appearance, getting a little cosmetic refreshment or being a social media marvel, but there’s a fine line between self-confidence and self-obsession. That line is crossed once we start believing our own hype.

Tipsy Salon Bar is not your average beauty emporium. Men and women alike are flocking to the hottest salon along Las Olas Boulevard to jumpstart their beauty regimens. Here, we give three cheers to the place where cocktails, cuts and color collide for a salon experience like no other. Pedestrians spill onto the sidewalks of Las Olas Boulevard, peeking into storefronts and trendy businesses that line the bustling byway. The strip, which bisects downtown Fort Lauderdale, is crowded with art galleries, restaurants and nightclubs. Just East of SE 15th Ave, you’ll find the chicest salon in the area, Tipsy Salon Bar. The Las Olas location of Tipsy Salon Bar (1503 Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL; 954-779-2616) is the only one in the franchise currently located in South Florida. With sister shops located in Boyton Beach, Wellington, Deerfield Beach and Jupiter, and plans to open 13 other locations over the next three years (including, one in Miami), the Tipsy brand is expanding rapidly. Tipsy Fort Lauderdale celebrated its grand opening back in August. Since then, business has been booming with more and more new clients falling in love with the salon and spa. One look round the place, and it should come as no surprise. Within minutes of entering the location, patrons are warmly greeted by front desk staff. Deciding what services they’d like to have gives them plenty of time to gawk at the polished, upscale decór surrounding them. The slick design opens up into a front bar area where clients can overlook hair stylists, while having their cuticles refined on one hand and knocking back a glass of champagne with the other. To the left of the salon floor lies a modern bar stocked with enough libations to get Tipsy through a Super Bowl viewing party. In any given direction, patrons are stared down by giant flat screen televisions playing music videos. Their beauty experience has a soundtrack that plays like a hit list
of who’s hot in music today. The space also includes a plush pedicure suite and washing stations in the rear. The slick design is merely one of the selling points. South Florida is bankrolled by beauty. There is no shortage of salons, spas and tonsoriums straddling the boutique thoroughfare Las Olas Boulevard has become, but Tipsy stands out from the cosmetological crowd. Not only is the design sleek and modern, but the novelty of the salon, its stylists and services provided therein make it truly unique. “There is no place where you can have your hair, nails and skin care services done and enjoy wine at the same time,” remarks manager Daniel Lam. “This is a beauty salon like any other one that can turn into a bar in the late hours. We are very picky about our hair stylists and choose them based on their talent and character. All of them are young and very into what’s trending.” Tipsy stays ahead pf the curve by offering a unique array of services from which clients can choose. Where else can you get lowlights while enjoying a lychee mimosa, get a cut while sipping the Cupcake Merlot or enjoy a pedicure while polishing off a glass of Prosecco? Aside from the expected salon services and extensive bar menu, Tipsy offers a full range of manicure and pedicure options, hair and eyelash extensions, skincare services and advanced express color techniques that take just 20 minutes. Moreover, because of the salon’s innovative set up, patrons can enjoy multiple services at once. Tipsy also has a licensed physician on staff who provides Botox, fillers and face peels, among other dermatological practices, at competitive prices.

“We provide totally customized services to each client walking into the shop,” explains Lam. “When they leave, as a manager, I have to make sure they are leaving with a smile on their face. That’s important. When you’re here spending your hard-earned money, the quality of services has to fit and exceed your expectations.” Tipsy, which is open until 10pm seven days a week, has been exceeding the expectations for a growing number of clients that come from as far as Miami. The extended hours allow individuals who work well into the evening a chance to pamper themselves after a hard day’s work. The diverse client base comes in for services and then congregates at the bar during later hours. Patrons decide to stay late and return again because of Tipsy's unwavering focus on attentive, client-focused interactions. “I focus a lot on the impression you have when you first come in,” says Lam. “To me, the most important moments are the first
24
seconds when you walk in. If you feel great, you’re going to spend money. If you have a bad impression, you won’t come back.” Staying abreast of trends, forging new industry standards and maintaining a commitment to the highest quality of customer care has catapulted Tipsy into a league of its own. In the process, the salon and spa is changing the way men and women view (and value) their grooming experiences. “I like that we are very flexible,” says Lam. “We have to adapt. There are so many beauty salons everywhere. What makes us stand out is the quality of services we provide.” Get up close and personal with Tipsy Salon Bar and the staff at the upcoming Guy’s Night Out Movember Mixer hosted by Kitty Meow. The event takes place Thursday November 12 from 6pm to 9pm and will feature discounted grooming services and giveaways.

Party Monster 3 AFTER-HOURS HOTSPOTS
The music is blaring and you're feeling invigorated as you sweat to the beat and sip your drink on the dance floor. Then, all of a sudden, you hear that dreadful phrase that halts your groove in mid-party mode, “Last Call for Alcohol.” There’s a remedy to this major (and inevitable) buzz kill: South Florida’s after-hours. So refresh that drink and get back in your zone with these after-hours venues. BY JAMEER BAPTISTE
T
he Manor (2345 Wilton Drive Wilton Manors FL 33305; 954626-0082) is Fort Lauderdale’s premier mega nightclub that transfixes partygoers every Friday and Saturday up until four o’clock in the morning. Pretty much everyone in South Florida has frequented the club and it’s not only because they are open until 4:00 am when all the other clubs have shut their doors for the night. It’s also because they invite leading entertainers and throw incredible parties. They routinely showcase celebrity guests like the latest cast members of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Lil' Kim and Andrew Christian along with his underwear models. Their crowd-pleasing parties, like Bubble Gum Fridays, are creative and fun. Moreover, their multiple rooms, a huge dance floor, an outdoor terrace, a Spanish/Hip Hop room and an outdoor patio help to diversify the club making it welcoming to everyone. The space is a labyrinth of public and private play areas. Overall, it’s relatively quiet with mere remnants of idle chatter and soft music. Moreover, privacy is a must. There are no cameras, cellphones or recording devices of any kind permitted. Closing times vary depending on the day. To learn more, visit www.321slammer.com. PINK NAIL SOCIETY

t the age of 34, Stephen Tendrich has interned with the Kodak Pavilion in Cannes, France, bartended on Fire Island, taught hearing-impaired youth English in Ghana and worked as a radio jockey in Miami amid countless other life ventures. Nothing has proved more rewarding to him, however, than his commitment to the awareness of and fight against prostate cancer. It all began with a discouraging call from his father in July of 2013. His dad, who suffers from prostate cancer, was feeling inadequate like many men in his situation. He felt his manhood was being stripped away. It was a hard pill to swallow and all Tendrich wanted to do was console his father, but he was in New York and his father was in Florida. Instead of hiding behind feelings of helplessness, Tendrich created a campaign that would bring him closer to his father regardless of geographic separation.
because it spread through Fire Island like a brush fire, but because it showed Tendrich’s father that his manhood is equivalent to the strength in countless pink pinky fingers. Tendrich continued the campaign with no official title until a candid response led him to the name Pink Nail Society. Since starting the campaign, Tendrich has moved back to South Florida. It has allowed him to be closer to his father in his hometown of Miami, after being away in New York for 11 years. He has expanded the mission of Pink Nail Society to include not only prostate cancer awareness but also funding for testing men who are uninsured.
I thought to myself, look at these guys breaking down the barrier of masculinity by dressing up in drag.
Tendrich was in Fire Island at the time, a major gay party destination in New York, bartending for his fourth consecutive season as a side gig while on summer break from teaching. While there, he couldn’t help but notice men from all over the world descending on the destination to take part in an honored Pines’ tradition. “I thought to myself,” recalls Tendrich, “look at these guys breaking down the barrier of masculinity by dressing up in drag.”
It was an epiphany for Tendrich. If these men could blur the lines of masculinity by getting done up as beautiful women, then a simple swipe of pink atop a man’s fingernail could easily challenge society’s view of what it means to be masculine. And so he began his campaign one pinky at a time, giving prostate cancer the finger with every application of pink nail polish. The campaign proved to be a success, not
Pink Nail Society is a growing organization and just received its nonprofit status. Tendrich is committed to the organization’s mission and has built a strong team to help him in his pursuit. After two awareness events at Hunters Nightclub (where he works as a bartender), Tendrich will be producing Pink Nail Society’s first Fundraiser at Rumors Bar on Saturday November 7 from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
“I’m so glad to have a great team working with me,” exclaims Tendrich. “My board members, Doctor Vaughan Daniels-Hepnar, Bryan Daniels-Hepnar, and my mom and dad are my ‘Pinkies.'” There will be live music, a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, $1 shots and pink cupcakes at the inaugural fundraiser. The South Florida Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence: The House of the Rising Sun will be in the house for a special appearance, as well. Don't even think about leaving without getting your pinky nail painted pink. If you're unable to make it to the fundraiser but would like to support the efforts of the Pink Nail Society, contribute to their GoFundMe page by searching "Pink Nail Society Campaign." SERVICE WORDS & PHOTO BY JAMEER BAPTISTE
ON THE GAYDAR Ron Cerreta, owner of Ron’s Barber Shop, has turned his one-man barber shop into a bustling men’s grooming center with six stations and a total of 14 fabulous barbers. Each day, from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, our community can get a fresh cut and clean shave at unbeatable prices. We chatted with the Navy veteran, hair expert and funny man about trends in men’s grooming, to dye or not to dye and his celebrity hair crush. Buckle up for a crash course in looking good. What do must men get wrong about grooming? They feel they need to spend a lot of money to look good and that’s just not true. We charge $10 a haircut and $15 for a shave. And we’ll make you look better than any other stylist or barber shop in town. What are some helpful grooming tips for men, in general? Don’t attempt to do your own haircuts. You can nick yourself, get an infection and you can also give yourself a bad haircut. We’ll do it for you every week or once every other week at a fraction of the cost other barber shops offer. What are some helpful tips for men to find the best hairstyle for their face type? Come in and talk to one of my barbers, We do consultations. For example, with a round face, you should have somewhat of a longer cut. For a thinner face, it should be a shorter cut. What are some of the best hair care products for men? There’s not much difference of alkaline and acid in each product. The only real time you get into a whole lot of difference is when you start getting into Head and Shoulders for dry skin or flaky skin. There is also a difference for African American gentlemen who tend to get razor bumps. They have to use a certain kind of shaving cream. In my opinion, Suave is just as good as Vidal Sassoon—the chemical composition differs slightly, whereas the price is drastically different.
Grey hair is hollow. When you dye it, you get the actual color of the dye. This can make it hard to get a natural look. You have to have a specialist do it to fool the public. What do you prefer, long or short? It all depends on the person and their personality. I don’t want a surfer to come in here and get a crew cut and I don’t want a police officer having a long cut. That goes for a person’s facial hair too. At Ron’s Barber Shop, we need to get to know the person when they come in. That is just as important as the cut itself. What is your favorite hairstyle? My favorite male hairstyle is a flat top. I am ex-military and I think it is clean and it is sharp. It lasts long and, if someone does it right, it can look fresh for a while. Who is your celebrity hair crush? Vin Diesel. He has a bald head. We actually give the best bald shaves in town. We start out with a little Noxzema with a hot towel, while giving you a massage. Then, we use a straight edge razor to shave your entire head. Afterwards, we use a cold towel to close the pores. We finish with a spray of alcohol, so you get the sting like you just ate a peppermint patty. It’s better than a full body massage.
What men's style is trending at present? Right now, I would have to say it's the Japanese Fade. This style is a high fade with a hard part that is carved in.
When it comes to men and their hair, all men should what and why? All men should get their haircut at least every three to four weeks. Why? Because a fresh, clean cut adds to your attractiveness and it also gives you a better mental attitude. It makes the public see you better and when you feel good about yourself, you put that out to everyone else.
When someone is going grey should they dye or go au naturel? It depends on the person and what they’re looking for, as well as the thickness and density of the hair. It also depends on the coarseness of the hair.

DUMBBELLS:
YOUR SMARTEST WORKOUT CHOICE BY TOM BONANTI
74
FITNESS
I
’ve never understood why they call them “dumbbells”. These little bars that come with plates secured to the ends of them in various sizes and weights are the most practical and efficient way to work out any muscle group in the body. Dumbbells have been around forever, and millions have achieved great results using them. Whether you’re in a crowed gym, or at home on the couch, you can do a simple, quick set of curls, extensions or raises anytime. Say what you will about state of the art, sophisticated health club machines, but I will stick with the basics. So here’s to the mighty dumbbells and why they’re your wisest choice in workout equipment. ALTERNATIVES DON'T GUARANTEE A SUCCESSFUL WORKOUT
Dumbbells force you to use better form. Working with barbells, a Smith machine or expensive specialized equipment doesn’t necessarily guarantee you a successful workout, especially if your form sucks. With a dumbbell in each hand, you can better feel the impact of the weights on individual muscles. You can also get a better perception of whether you are executing each rep of each set properly. Dumbbells are great for basic exercises as well as isolation movements where you want to target a specific muscle. Sure, if you’re an Olympic power lifter requiring hundreds of pounds to lift, dumbbells may not suit you (I don’t think they make a 1000 lb. dumbbell!). But I’d say 90% of all fitness enthusiasts can do everything they need with dumbbells. DUMBBELLS SAVE YOU MONEY Dumbbells are more practical and cost efficient. If you’re working out at home all you need is an adjustable bench and a few sets of dumbbells. Cost: $100 or less if you find a decent used set. You can store them under a bed or in a closet easily. You can whip them out at any time for quick access. In a crowded commercial gym, all you need is to grab your dumbbells
and find a small space or corner to do your thing. Just make sure to rerack your weights when you’re through. DUMBBELLS ARE GREAT FOR CARDIO Using dumbbells can give you a great cardiovascular workout. Yes, if you use lighter weights and do faster reps, you can easily get your heart rate up into the target zone. Once you get it there, go from set to set with little rest to keep that heart pumping. Anyone who does circuit training where you combine cardio with weights will tell you how invaluable dumbbells are to their program! Will it burn as many calories as time on the treadmill? Absolutely, in fact you can easily burn 350 or more calories with a dumbbell routine and pump your muscles at the same time in less than an hour. DUMBBELLS ARE ONE OF THE MOST VERSATILE WORKOUT TOOLS With dumbbells you are capable of anything because they are really versatile! If it’s shoulders you’re working, try dumbbell military presses and front and side raises. You can perform many different types of curls and extensions for biceps and triceps. Any chest or back workout should include flat and incline dumbbell bench presses and one arm dumbbell rows as well as shrugs. There are also myriads of different kinds of squats and lunges you can perform with dumbbells for butt and legs.

PRESENT AND FUTURE JURASSIC WORLD. You’ve seen Chris Pratt kick alien ass in Guardians of the Galaxy, now watch what he does to dinosaurs in Jurassic World (Legend/Universal), now on Blu-ray 3D+Bluray+Digital HD. As raptor trainer Owen, Pratt is the alpha in the pack until things go horribly wrong in this cautionary tale of corporate greed and military mania. Years have passed since the horrors of the dinosaur-themed Jurassic Park complex. With what is considered new and improved tech in place, Jurassic World, under the ownership of well-intentioned zillionaire Masrani (Irrfan Khan), opens for business. Corporate mouthpiece Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) awaits the arrival of her nephews Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins) at the theme park for Christmas break. Rather, her assistant Zara (Katie McGrath) is waiting for the boys as Claire has dino-sized business matters to address. Meanwhile, Owen is being pursued by the
84
genetically engineered dino-hybrid Indominus Rex, who has escaped its enclosure and is on a killing spree. With more than 20k visitors on-site, the chaos and carnage potential is considerable. Additionally, maniacal military man Hoskins (Vincent D’Onofrio) is in cahoots with evil scientist Dr. Wu (gay actor B.D. Wong), to prep the raptors and Indominus Rex for use by the armed forces. More than 20 years after the Steven Spielberg/ Michael Crichton partnership resulted in the classic Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World is an admirable, if flawed, reboot of the series, under the direction of Colin Trevorrow. Pratt is entertaining as always and continues to develop into a full-throttle Hollywood heartthrob. The special effects – one of the main calling cards for Jurassic World – are decent and the action is plentiful. Triple-disc bonus features include deleted scenes, “Welcome to Jurassic World” featurette, Jurassic World: All Access Pass and much more.

The set-up is full of all sorts of comedic possibilities and Back To The Future delivers on almost all of them. The jokes are still funny, even 30 years later. The special effects, special for the time, are kind of hokey, but that’s what makes them charming. Lloyd’s wacky professor character is just short of being annoying, while Fox’s star shines brightly. Watching Back To The Future in 2015 is more fun than you might think. BACK TO THE FUTURE. Sci-fi fans are having a great year in 2015. The film version of The Martian starring Matt Damon did big box office. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams , is opening in theaters in time for the winter holiday movie season. Also worth mentioning is the four-disc Back To The Future (Universal) 30th anniversary trilogy reissue on Blu-ray. The series, which began in 1985 and spawned two sequels in 1989 and 1990, is especially noteworthy because the year 2015 is of great significance in the second movie. Robert Zemeckis, who directed all three films, appears to run out of steam (and ideas) over the course of the trilogy, with the first in the series still remaining the best. The original Back To The Future begins in 1985 with Marty (Michael J. Fox) being summoned to the mall parking lot by wildhaired mad scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) for a late-night rendezvous. Doc has invented a time machine made out of a Delorean, utilizing plutonium he got by scamming terrorists. Needless to say the terrorists aren’t thrilled and try to kill Doc. In a moment of panic, Marty hides in the Delorean and then is accidentally transported to the past, 1955 to be exact. His presence there, in his 1985 clothes (acid-washed denim, down vest, Nikes and purple Calvin Klein briefs), creates a stir, beginning with Lorraine (Lea Thompson). Of course, in the future Lorraine is going to be Marty’s mother. That is if Marty can get redirect Lorraine’s attention from him to town-nerd, the bullied George (Crispin Glover). Marty also has to convince the 1955 Doc of who he is and where he’s from so that he can be sent back to 1985.
Unfortunately, the same doesn’t hold true for the sequels. 1989’s Back To The Future II, which takes us to 2015, is more convoluted than its predecessor, so much so that it’s constantly explaining itself. That’s never a good thing. It also only functions as a way of prepping viewers for the old west-set Back To The Future III, which was released a year later. It’s worth mentioning that series villain Biff (Thomas F. Wilson), who becomes an evil, corrupt and obscenely wealthy hotel magnate in Back To The Future II, bears a prescient resemblance to evil, corrupt and obscenely wealthy real estate magnate Donald Trump in more ways than one. A joke about the Chicago Cubs baseball team winning the World Series in 2015 is especially poignant, and other predicted details are almost eerily on target. But any semblance of story is replaced by an overload of physical comedy and violence. One distracting HD drawback to be aware of is the way that age make-up and hairpieces look especially phony and exaggerated. Bonus materials on the Blu-ray+HD 30th anniversary edition include an entirely separate featuring the new short film Doc Brown Saves The World (starring Christopher Lloyd), two episodes of the 1991 animated Back to the Future series, the “2015” commercials, multi-part documentaries, deleted scenes, music videos, behind the scenes footage, a Q&A with Michael J. Fox and much more. Friendly reminder: The 2015 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary, Nov. 6-22, featuring film premieres from over 30 countries, special guest appearances and parties galore.
